Since writing my column this time last week, the world has continued to spin in what feels like an out of control manner. While we all try to do our best to cope with the evolving changes, it is a pretty challenging task. In response to the dramatic impact these changes were having on our local business community, Brownie and I made the decision to enact what the PM is now calling business hibernation. Although for us this won't be quite as dramatic as for many other small businesses as we will be able to still offer an on-line publication. I am sure you are all aware that the reason you have been able to go to your letterbox (well most of you) and get a copy of our free weekly newspaper to read and enjoy is because of the advertising that has been purchased by local businesses. Strangely, for the past few years while independent print publications have been consistently closing across the country, we have been able to hold our own. I believe we have been able to buck the trend because of our loyal readership and because the businesses who advertised with us felt that they were continuing to get value for money.

We know that we have very loyal readers who would love things to continue as they always have. However, we really didn’t feel it was reasonable, or fair, to put pressure on our local businesses to buy advertising space when they didn’t even know if they would be operating next week. Therefore we have decided that this week's newspaper will be our last print edition for the foreseeable future, So now, Brownie and I are going to use the next couple of weeks to work through how we can evolve the newspaper into an online only version in the short term. While we know from the research we undertook last year that many readers genuinely prefer reading a hard copy of the newspaper … sitting down, getting comfy, grabbing a cuppa and have a flick through the pages … this is a luxury that we just can’t afford at the moment. And to be honest, I am with you. I am still a big fan of reading real books, magazines and newspapers. We will look at how we can best serve the needs of the businesses that still need to promote their goods and services to the local community and how advertisers could be confident that the newspaper is being read by locals. We’re definitely looking at this in a positive way, maybe with some exciting new opportunities to explore and improved experiences for readers.

Local News Council election results unclear

In what may go down as one of Queensland’s messiest local government elections, a result still seems to be as clear as mud (at the time of going to print) in the race to elect representatives for both Division 1 and Division 5 on the Sunshine Coast Council. Between a soccer team-sized field of hopefuls in Division 5, glitches and failures with the Electoral Commission of Queensland website and telephone system, an optional preferential voting system that gives no certainty of a majority result, combined with the mother-of-all disruptors in the form of a deadly pandemic … this election was one fated to give rise to chaotic results from the start. Record numbers of voters either pre-polled before last Saturday’s official election day, applied (or tried to) for a postal vote, made frantic attempts to register to vote via telephone or just chose not to vote at all. Electioneering materials were banished from outside polling booths, along with banning the throngs of candidates and supporters vying with each other to hand you a how-to-vote card. No sausage sizzles, no cake stalls, no friendly chatter between locals catching up after voting. Just hand sanitizer, queue controllers, social distancing and bring-your-own pencil please. With so many postal voting this year, the final

results for many divisions are not likely to be known for another week. At the time of going to print, and with 21% of votes counted in Division 1, two-term incumbent Rick Baberowski holds a 20% lead over Glass House Mountains business woman Jenny Broderick (47% to 27%), with Mark Davis (12%) and Raelene Ellis (12%) trailing and seemingly out of contention. Division 5, with ten candidates to choose from, has surprisingly thrown up a two-horse race between Winston Johnston (21.27%) and the Queensland Greens' candidate Tracy Burton (21.13%). With 23% of the vote counted, all other candidates are polling at below 10%. This division will most likely be determined on a preference countback … if any were allocated by the voters. However, in the race to be Mayor, Mark Jamieson appears likely to be returned for a third term, with rival Chris Thompson conceding defeat. As we go to print, Mark Jamieson held a considerable lead over Chris Thompson (49% to 31%) with 47% of the vote counted. Trailing considerably behind were Michael Burgess (11%) and Donald Innes (7%).

Former Diamond Valley local, 36-year-old pilot Stuart Wavell, died in an aircraft accident at Lockhart River, north of Cairns, on March 11. It was a beautiful morning in Cairns, where Stuart lived, though a tropical low was brewing further north in the Coral Sea. Unfortunately his flight’s arrival coincided with a brief but torrential storm. Many locals would know Stuart. His younger sister Grace and his parents Dawn Maddern and Russell Wavell were well known within the community for their contribution to Sunshine Coast Council’s library services. Raised in the house his parents built, Stuart grew up free and surrounded by warmth, attending Mooloolah State School and Matthew Flinders Anglican College. He studied law and business at the University of Queensland. After a lifelong interest in aviation and spurred on by the desire to experience his country, Stuart decided to learn to fly. He worked full time to fund his lessons and achieve his commercial pilot's licence. Shortly after, he began his first, and perhaps favourite, flying job as a mustering pilot and station hand in Tarcoola, South Australia. Flying would take him all over the country. He surveyed almost the entire east coast of Australia from Melbourne to Cairns. He spent close to four years in Gunbalanya in Arnhem Land, where he

became a much loved fixture in the community. He would eventually move to Cairns to be with his partner and to fly around the Gulf. Stuart's capacity to find the best in everybody and in every situation made him an asset to the world. In his short but full life he showed others the true value of tenacity, courage and humility. He was also fortunate to have met his soulmate, Liz Thomas. They had many good years together sharing a sense of curiosity and wonder of all things, especially flying. Those closest to Stuart thought of him as the ace up their sleeve. He was a friend they could call on, no matter the hour; the man they turned to for his thoughtful perspective and his dry sense of humour. He will forever be missed.

How a double rum is helping Beenleigh Rum and Bundaberg Rum have responded to the COVID-19 crisis by immediately focussing on the production of ethanol for hand sanitiser, using existing production lines and staff to ensure a supply of much-needed hand sanitiser for the state. Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the department had reached out to Queensland manufacturers and the response, particularly from two of the most loved brands in the state, showed just how much local companies were willing to do to help Queenslanders. Beenleigh Rum – Australia’s oldest distillery – started the production of hand sanitiser this week and has arrangements to supply the Queensland Government to ensure there is a ready supply for schools and frontline workers. Bundaberg Rum is also going full steam ahead with the production of ethanol and will donate 100,000 litres – enough to produce around 500,000 bottles of sanistiser – to the government. "The Department of State Development is working to identify more manufacturers around the state who can quickly transition to the production of hand sanitiser,” Mr Dick said. “I can’t thank these mighty Queensland manufacturers enough. “We want to see more of this and are ready and eager to work with and support manufacturers who can help us get more products into our hospitals, our schools and our supermarkets and stores. “This is the time to think laterally and broadly about how you and your business can adapt and contribute to our state’s COVID-19 coronavirus response,” the Minister said.

Let your kindness shine

In the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, where uncertainty can strike at the core of our everyday lives, Sunshine Coast Council is encouraging all residents to look out for their neighbours – particularly those who are most vulnerable – and show that community spirit for which our residents are renowned. Council’s #covidkindness platform will explore weekly themes to encourage residents to stay connected, stay informed, stay healthy, stay playful, stay creative and stay neighbourly to help combat social isolation, loneliness and community disconnection. This is part of council’s existing At Home in my Neighbourhood program, which encourages connected neighbourhoods and encourages a better quality of life, feeling safe and engaged and an overall sense of belonging. Council officers have developed a free #covidkindness postcard that can be downloaded from council’s website. Residents can print out the postcard and pop it in their neighbour’s mailbox using good hand hygiene or screenshot and send to their neighbours electronically. Anyone is welcome to use this and council urges residents, businesses, community organisations and other councils to share it with their communities. They are also encouraging people to create their own Facebook street groups and would love to hear how they are sharing the kindness that might motivate even more neighbourhood champions. Council will promote online some of the creative ideas that are generated in our local neighbourhoods from this initiative. Upgrade of Maleny-Kenilworth Road on its way Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is ecstatic to announce that after 11 years of lobbying, nearly $5 million is on the way for Maleny-Kenilworth Road upgrades. “I’m pinching myself! The decade of petitions, emails, my walking the road and even locals blockading the road at one point have all paid off … finally. We’ve secured the funding,” Mr Powell said. The $4.9 million will be used to design and construct two lanes – one in each direction – on Maleny-Kenilworth Road between Lees Road and Cambroon Creek and around the Booloumba Creek Road intersection. “Maleny-Kenilworth Road is a designated tourist route. For it to have a single bitumen lane to accommodate tourists, locals, school buses and heavy vehicles has been disgraceful and dangerous,” Mr Powell said. “Ever since I became the Member for Glass House, it has been one of my highest priorities to get it fixed.” Conondale resident Ian Fleiter said it was a thrill to hear this news.

“It’s something that we in the valley have been waiting and looking forward to for many a long year,” he said. Surveyors will be on the road soon to undertake detailed design work, with the upgrade expected to be completed in September 2021. Mr Powell said he had requested, if possible with the looming jobs crisis following COVID-19, that the Department of Transport and Main Roads accelerate the work and complete it for holidaymakers by Easter 2021. “The region has taken quite a hit due to COVID-19 and this upgrade would breathe fresh air into tourism vendors operating in the Sunshine Coast hinterland,” he said.

Places & faces Old world gentleman turns 90 By Sonia Clark Founding member of Beerwah Grafx group, Alistair Davis (known as Al) celebrated his 90th birthday on March 31. Although planned celebrations with family and friends could not take place, good friend Margaret Thompson reached out to GC&M News to provide some highlights of Al’s life, which she hoped could be shared as a special way to mark his milestone birthday. Glass House Mountains became home to Alistair and Mitzi Davis when they retired in 2001. Sharing a long-standing appreciation for animals, the couple began showing and breeding dogs with noted successes, until Mitzi died in 2015. Al held the first meeting of the Beerwah Grafx group in 2005 at the Beerwah Hall. The group taught computer skills, digital photography and computer art to older members of the community. Since its inception the group has gone from strength to strength, providing both practical skills and a highly anticipated regular social forum for its members. During this time Alistair also developed his interest in camera work, including establishing a video group that produced a number of local interest videos from 2010-2015, including one about the Glasshouse Country region. The Beerwah Grafx group is now under the auspices of U3A and continues to provide tuition and leadership across the Sunshine Coast. Margaret said that, above all, Al was a wonderful “old world gentleman” who has inspired and

encouraged so many people over the years with his intelligence and generosity of spirit. “His enthusiasm and encouragement paved the way for others to continue. He is admired and respected as a man of integrity, honesty and his selfless desire to help others wherever he can,” Margaret said. Not surprisingly, Al led an interesting life before relocating to the local area. He was born in Cape Town on March 31, 1930 at a time in history when many young boys growing up had a much greater sense of freedom and adventure than young people today. He grew up in South Africa with his parents, a sister and two brothers. The boys were encouraged to work hard and roam freely, and they all learned the value of money at a young age. The boys often looked to inventive and resourceful ways to raise funds. These escapades were sometimes a bit naughty (like selling the produce from a neighbour's farm directly to the town folk) but generally harmless, and showed an ingenuity of spirit. As an adult, Alistair decided to become a veterinary surgeon, which would shape the following 20 years of his life in South Africa. In 1954, he married Mitzi. Like many young couples they struggled in the early days of establishing his veterinary practice before it became a success. The couple went on to have four children and a house that was always filled with animals.

In his 40s, Alistair took up karate and eventually became a second dan black belt. He was also very involved in show jumping. By all accounts, Al is a highly intelligent man who has had a love of learning throughout his life, including returning to university in the 1970s to pursue his Master of Veterinary Medicine. Alistair’s research into heat stress was deemed ground breaking at the time. The family moved to Australia in 1975, initially living in a pop-up caravan for several months before becoming established. Alistair got a job in a university lecturing in physiology while continuing his research and completing his PhD. During this time, the indefatigable Alistair also pioneered in-house fitness programs for large corporations. Al and Mitzi moved north to Airlie Beach in the early 1980s and with son Brendan and his wife, Caroline, they started Airlie Birds, a service providing supplies to boats in Shute Harbour. These days Al enjoys spending time in his beloved garden with his mischievous Affenpinschers. Happy 90th birthday Al!

Community News Gentleman of Glass House Mountains honoured

By Sonia Clark At the official re-opening of the Glasshouse Country RSL earlier this year, members and guests gathered to pay tribute to former foundation member George Morgan, whose long running commitment to the club was honoured by naming a room in the refurbished building the Morgan Room. Daughter Lorraine McNamara spoke at the ceremony on behalf of the extended Morgan families and was pleased and grateful that her dad’s dedicated service to his cherished club over many decades was being acknowledged. As well as being a foundation member of the Glasshouse RSL, known back then as the local RSSAILA (Returned Sailors’ Soldiers’ and Airmens’ Imperial League of Australia) in 1947, George also went on to become treasurer for an extraordinary length of time from 1965-1991.

Lorraine said the honour board at the back of the club reflected the number of years her dad had invested as treasurer, which only someone who really loved the club and what the members stood for would do. “Dad joked and said the reason he was treasurer for so long was that no one else wanted to do it but he was committed to the club and spent many years helping out with all aspects of the club operations,” Lorraine said. “From spending weekends building extensions, to travelling to Caboolture for banking during the week, to manning the door at the RSL hall monthly dances – he was always there when help was required. “He was a very quiet and gentle man in every sense of the word and he would never have boasted about what he had done over the years,” she said. Emigrating to Australia as a 17-year old along with his two brothers, Jim and Jack, George found work around Glass House Mountains with several local farmers, eventually owning land in 1934 with his brothers on Railway Parade growing pineapples until he went to war. He loved automobiles and especially his beloved Royal Enfield motorbike. This love for anything with a motor engine eventually enabled George to join the Australian Army. Initially ineligible to join at the beginning of the war (he was a quarter of an inch too short), his mechanical experience on farms with tractors, trucks and motorbikes was well regarded by Army

authorities a few years later, and he was able to enlist in May 1941. From 1941-1945, George served as a driver in the 101 Australian Light Field Ambulance that included time in Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney and finally to New Guinea’s Kokoda Trail where he cared for and transported wounded soldiers. He was discharged from service in January 1946, allowing him to return to farming. Like many others at the time George never spoke much about his experiences of war. Known for his local community-oriented efforts and for being a man who quietly went out of his way to help others where he could, George ‘the Gentleman of Glass House Mountains’ was an active member of the RSL Sub Branch for more than 50 years – from 1947 until two years before his death in 2001. In 2002, the RSL Sub Branch awarded George a citation for life membership and gold badge to acknowledge his considerable efforts. Added to that earlier this year was the unveiling of the Morgan Room in his honour.

Community News Local women of Rural Fire Brigade Helen Jakeman from Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade was featured on the cover of GC&M News on March 18. Helen has been actively encouraging diversity in the brigade through inclusion and equality of women since joining the Rural Fire Service Queensland in 1993. She has been instrumental in ensuring women are a visible and equal component in all activities of the brigade. GC&M News caught up with Helen and brigade member Chantelle Garden to get their thoughts on why more women should get involved in the Rural Fire Brigade (RFB). Q: Why do you think more women should get involved with the RFB? A: We think women can bring a different perspective and can add value to the team dynamic by bringing gender balance to the brigade. Helen: I think it’s great for the public to see women involved in the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES). Women are capable of achieving anything and I’m more than happy to encourage that. Men and women think differently and have different areas of insight, skill and ability, so to have a balance of ideas and to be able to collaborate well to achieve great results brings a lot of value to any organisation. Q: How has women's involvement with the RFB evolve over the years? A: Helen: There are definitely more women joining brigades to be an operational [fire fighting] member these days. Previously women were predominately joining as support members to help behind the scenes in jobs such as administration, catering, fund raising, etc. Originally many of our female members started as support members who joined alongside their husbands. I’m pleased that it is much more acceptable now for women to join the fire and emergencies services in all capacities, and that their contribution is equally appreciated for the skills and strengths they bring to the role.

Q: Why did you initially get involved? A: Chantelle: I got involved after being at home raising my children for six years. Coming from a long line of emergency services personnel I decided RFB would fit my family lifestyle the best. I love it because giving back to my community, particularly in tough times, is the best feeling you can have. Helen: I became involved in 1993 when our brigade was just forming and my husband had become an officer of the brigade. I felt that I could help in some way not as an operational member but as a support member and this was one way that I could become involved in a community organisation. Q: What are some highlights of being involved? A: Chantelle: Definitely the life-long friendships you develop and also the satisfaction of working together as a team to walk into some serious situations and know that you are all there for each other and your community. Helen: For me the highlights are the long-term friendships that I have made, and also having my family involved with the brigade. We are fortunate to have a great group of team members in our brigade who work and socialise together really well. Q: What would you say to someone thinking of joining? A: We would say reach out to your local rural fire brigade and join even if you are unsure in what capacity - operational or support - as different people have different strengths. Get to know the members as the RFB will become like a second family and by being involved you also achieve a great sense of community involvement. A park for Peachester

Contributed by Sally Joyce It’s been a year since April 2, 2019 when the area on High Street, Peachester was put up for sale. The ‘for sale’ sign went up and eventually came down and now there is a beautiful green space in our little town. Although no public picnic or play celebration can take place at this time, the gratitude for and value in having a common outdoor space has never been more relevant. Plans to move forward, which were going to be launched this week, are obviously on hold. However, when the time is right, please know that the entire community will be engaged in the park’s planning process. An aerial photograph will be used to capture and map everyone’s ideas and an ‘ideas funnel’ used to ensure all of these ideas contribute in some way to achievable goals, which can then be integrated into affordable, staged design. There will also be a request for applications for those interested in being part of the community reference group that will directly liaise with council during an onsite workshop and facilitate a children’s workshop where the community’s ideas can be married together with the existing natural assets into short- and long-term goals. Please stay tuned to the GC&M News online editions for links back to our Facebook page ‘A Park for Peachester’ as we rethink the best processes for the community to help design their play space. Contributed by Bob Banner The March dinner meeting for the Beerwah Lions Club included the club’s judging for its contestant in the Youth of the Year competition. There were two contestants – Breanne Howden, captain of Beerwah High School, and Samuel Fletcher, last year’s captain at Glasshouse Christian College. The two contestants gave impromptu speeches on set subjects: 1. How should society manage juvenile delinquency in our community? 2. Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time? Both contestants then presented their tenminute prepared speeches. Samuel’s speech was ‘And Love’ while Breanne's speech was ‘Women in Sport’. The overall winner was Breanne Howden who should go on to represent the club at the zone finals. Unfortunately, further judging is unlikely due to crowd restrictions caused by the current coronavirus outbreak. Our congratulations to these young folk who gave thoughtful and inspiring addresses.

Team effort for new facilities

Landsborough Scout Group was fortunate to secure funding from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund in February last year for the construction of a large shed to be used as the Venturer unit room and storage shed at the Rocky Creek Scout campsite on Old Gympie Road. While the grant of $22,247.94 didn’t cover the entire project, it was a significant percentage of what was required. Ground for the construction project was finally broken in July 2019, with one of the Scout parents voluntarily completing all of the earthworks. Landsborough Scout Group Committee secretary Karli Pearson said that a further grant from the Sunshine Coast Council enabled the group to buy the materials to fit out the shed and volunteers from the Landsborough Scout Group generously provided the labour to divide the shed and fit it out as a storage unit and meeting space. “Between October 2019 and February 2020, one of our Scout dads constructed the dividing wall and fully lined the shed. Parents and leaders offered assistance when work schedules aligned but much of the construction came down to our one dad and his family,” Karli said. The group also managed to acquire a number of second-hand kitchen cabinets throughout last year. In January there was a major working bee with nearly 30 people volunteering their time to dig trenches for plumbing, undercoat the new meeting room walls, clear and sort the den, set up and pack down numerous tents for evaluation of quality and arrange the kitchen cabinets. Venturers are aged 15-17 years and in normal times they meet on Thursday night. For those who will be housebound in the coming weeks, be assured that you will not be bored as there are thousands of engaging books, movies, comics, music and more to keep you happily occupied via the eLibrary. Easily accessible and conveniently organised under simple headings, library customers can take their pick from a huge selection of audiobooks, books and comics, magazines and newspapers, movies and music, encyclopaedias, information and more – all from the convenience of their own device. There is even a reading suggestions section where you can find works by those who write in a similar style to your favourite author, access to quality free learning and technology tutorials, and even the opportunity to be inspired by listening to authors discuss their work and passion for writing. Contributed by Sandy Johnson Year 3 students enjoyed a science lesson on how germs spread but it was a class with a difference. Their teacher, Jonathan Cooper, taught the lesson virtually and in the classroom at the same time. Students from other classes and those self-isolating at home logged in to join the lesson. The highlight of the lesson was seeing the joy on the students’ Jonathon teaching a virtual class faces as they saw their friends who had been at home for a few days. Friendship and community are important aspects of school life and one of the challenges the world is currently facing. Jonathon used different scenarios to show how germs spread and asked the students to guess how ‘germy’ items were before showing them the actual spread of germs on bread in a sealed plastic bag. Examples included washed hands, hands that had used sanitiser, a swab from a laptop and, finally, unwashed hands that had just come in from the playground. The results surprised and shocked the students and there will now be a much greater personal commitment to handwashing from this group! Glasshouse Christian College is known for its innovation and is set up to cope with the current crisis. Parents have access to all their children’s lessons, assignments and texts, and virtual classrooms maintain the community and relationships between teacher and students.

“Our school is very much a public venue, used not only for day-to-day school activities but also for after school sports and community events such as elections,” Benjamin said. “This piece of equipment will provide peace of mind for the entire community.” After the original yellow Wiggle, Greg Page, collapsed on stage earlier this year at a bushfire relief concert, there is now an increased awareness of the importance of defibrillators within the community. In Greg Page’s case a life-saving defibrillator was close at hand, which saved his life. Experts say that a person’s chance of survival can increase by up to 80% if a defibrillator is used within 3-5 minutes of collapse. The AED in the Landsborough State School will be secured in an easily accessible place ensuring that the school is well prepared should an instance of sudden cardiac arrest occur. What can musicians and their supporters do during this difficult period? Many of us will be severely affected by the loss of jobs and other shocks, which for musicians and music fans includes that we have no live music happening. Well, the music business is resilient. It will survive. However, we need to as well. For us I’m going to propose some things you might like to do over these next months: 1. It may be obvious but stay healthy – exercise and eat well. Don’t fall into a negative slump as that will only affect your health. So what can you do to keep your spirits up? Why not use your love of music to pull you through this? Music gives us hope and gets us up and dancing. So why not a little bit of hip and hop at home by yourself (if necessary)? Hey, if nothing else you might develop a few slick moves to electrify your look on stage! 2. Expand your horizons. You will be spending more time at home so use it to reset some goals. Prepare some new material and use the media to promote what you are doing. Live streaming is all the talk. What a great idea. There may or may not be any money in it and it will cost you, so let’s hope we can get some funding flowing into it! 3. Why not take this opportunity to record those songs you’ve been writing, or collaborate with a studio musician/engineer to complete the ideas for

songs you have in your head. It doesn’t need to be long hours slaving in the studio. Put down an idea or two in a short session and watch it develop at a distance via email. And, best of all, it will be surprisingly cheap. Ring around and ask. 4. Get your music up online. It is really easy. I am doing it with artists on Bandcamp and it will kickstart your creative output. Don’t worry if today’s mix is not perfect. Next week or month the remixed version will be cool and different, and you can always take down today’s mix. That’s something you can’t do with a CD release. 5. What can music fans do? Support musicians. A lot of them will leave the industry because of this loss of work, or at least go very part time. Perhaps you could organise some private music sessions for you and your children or your friends (at a responsible 1.5m distance). Invite in (or outdoors) an experienced musician who can bring some instruments and percussion and sing with the whole family and loop some fun things for you all to jam with right there on the spot! There is going to be some crazy concert ideas proposed. Support them. Buy some merchandise. Most importantly “love the one you’re with”, especially if it is just you!

Health & Wellbeing More men’s health discussions needed An event hosted by the Maleny Freemasons at the end of February attracted more than 40 men and their families to learn how to lead better lives. Men’s Health Matters was held at the Maleny Masonic Centre as part of a series of state-wide sessions run by Hand Heart Pocket, the charity of Freemasons Queensland, in collaboration with community health non-profit organisation CheckUP, focussing on improving men’s mental and physical health. The awareness campaign, which launched in September last year, travelled across the state, visiting towns and supporting local communities. Empowering people to lead better lives is an important part of the Hand Heart Pocket’s work in the community. As improving men’s mental and physical health both at a state-wide and grassroots level is part of the charity’s focus, it partnered with CheckUP to bring the potentially life-saving initiative to

communities across Queensland. The free information session was delivered by a registered psychologist and covered a range of topics such as nutrition and physical activity, early detection of cancer, diabetes and heart disease, mental health and relationships. The event provided a safe forum for men to talk about their experiences and health journey. Attendees were encouraged to put their health first and to have a conversation about how they are feeling both mentally and physically. Maleny Freemason Arthur Trass said the local Men’s Health Matters event was crucial in kickstarting the conversation around men’s health in the small hinterland community. “The Men’s Health Matters event from Hand Heart Pocket and CheckUP has already helped make a positive change within the Maleny community by getting people to at least talk about how men can improve their health,” Mr Trass said.

Smile makes the day easier To help the Peachester State School students and parents have successful drop offs at school last week the school created a joke fence. Principal Kim Fillery said the idea stemmed from year 1-2 teacher and school behaviour coach, Ms Viv, who wanted all students to “have a successful day and forget the worries of the world as much as possible”. The joke fence was a great hit, with students offering jokes to teachers to put up the next day.

Dine In Take Out Take away from the Beerwah Hotel

Following the announcement that all pubs, registered and licensed clubs (excluding bottle shops attached to these venues), and hotels (excluding accommodation) were to close from 12noon on Monday, March 23, the Beerwah Hotel, along with all of the hotels across the country, has followed these directions and at this stage there is no way of knowing when they will reopen. Beerwah Hotel owner Rick Gazzard said he would like to thank everyone for their support and understanding over the past few weeks. “Our bottle shops and drive through remain open at this stage and we have made the decision to provide a takeaway food menu with pick up from our hotel car park,” Rick said. “We still want our customers to be able to enjoy our delicious pub-style meals but from the comfort of their own homes. “We have made it really easy to order. All you have to do is call5494 0555, place your order, pay over the phone and come and collect at the time given by our staff,” he said. The menu items listed are available seven days a week for lunch between 11.30am-2.30pm and for dinner from 5.30-8.30pm. While most of us understand that closing cafés and restaurants has been a necessary step in reducing the spread of COVID-19 it doesn’t mean we are ready to give up our regular coffee fix or enjoying our favourite takeaway meal. Fortunately, nearly all of our local cafés have adjusted how they are doing business and are meeting the new requirements for takeaway only service. If you have a regular go-to location locally, you will probably still find them open even if they have reduced their operating hours. Sadly Club Glass House and the Mooloolah Valley Country Club, as well as the Lookout Café at Glass House Mountains and Maleny Cheese Café, haven’t been in a position to change how they operate so they have all closed temporarily. Quite a few of locations are already offering, or in the process of organising, delivery services, which is great. To find out more about your favourite dining out locations, remember to check out their Facebook pages, as they may have specific instructions, such as phone orders only. One enthusiastic local keen to share what is going on with as many different cafés and food supply businesses as possible has set up a Facebook group called Delivery Services and Take Away Food Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Glasshouse Country local Karen Austyn said that in this time of uncertainty we all need to be looking at ways to adjust our lives and work/ businesses so we can maintain a sort of normal. “Until we get back to normal, which hopefully will be soon, I started this page in the hope of helping cafés and restaurants of the hinterland to let the community know what they are now offering in an effort to help them keep their doors open,” Karen said. The group is encouraging businesses in Beerburrum, Glass House, Beerwah, Landsborough, Elimbah, Peachester, Maleny and Mooloolah to keep the group updated on what they are offering. This is one to follow to keep up with changes as they happen.

I know that many of us are already suffering and many more are deeply concerned about the impacts of the on-going COVID-19 situation on our health and financial security. Australia is not immune to the COVID-19 pandemic but we are one of the best prepared countries in the world to deal with it. We will get through this together. It is critical at this difficult time that you are able to find and act on the very best and most up to date information. If you want the latest advice on the best ways to keep you and your family safe, or to find out about the things the government is doing to protect Australians’ health, preserve our jobs and retirement incomes, and keep the economy strong then visit www.australia.gov.au. If you have a health-related question and you would prefer to speak to someone you can also call the Coronavirus Health Information Line on 1800 020 080. Things are changing rapidly every day. Already the government is injecting an unprecedented package of $189 billion into the economy to keep as many Australians in work and businesses in business as possible. This package includes an extra $550 a fortnight in income support for job seekers, students and others who have lost their income, as well as two payments of $750 each for pensioners and veterans. The government is also giving early access to superannuation for people in financial stress up to $10,000 per financial year. To keep businesses afloat and keep as many Australians in work as possible we are providing grants of up to $100,000 each for small and medium sized businesses to help pay their staff and bills as well as billions in funding to keep loans affordable for businesses to get them through this crisis. We are providing wage subsidies of up to 50% for apprentices and trainees, and a special $1 billion fund for especially hard hit sectors like tourism, agriculture and education. War on Waste Glasshouse Country

Tip for April

Textile waste is a huge problem with the average Australian buying 27kg of textiles each year and disposing of 23kg of it. Textile waste is often made up of fast fashion - cheap-and-cheerful but poor quality clothes not designed to last. As individuals we can make a difference – buy less, buy quality, buy second-hand, repair as needed, and when you are finished with manchester and clothing, look at alternatives to sending it to landfill. A few suggestions – send it to the op shop if it’s still in good condition, turn it into rags, pass it onto a friend.

Correction: Our March ‘War on Waste’ tip was about how to recycle small metal lids and caps. An eagle-eyed reader has contacted us after noticing that there were metal beer caps with plastic lining in our photo, which are not suitable to recycle due to the mix of materials. This is correct and we apologise for the error. Placing ALL METAL caps inside a larger steel or metal container and pressing it closed lets these small metal items get processed by the recycling machinery.

As humanity faces one of its toughest challenges, we are in for a hell of a fight. I say then: FIGHT IT! Fight it with all your might and resolve that we will never let a virus destroy what has taken us and generations to achieve. We will, as one, come through. Yes, there will be tears and time to mourn but we cannot let anxiety rule our lives. Never forget who and what you care about – your family, your values and those small things that make you who you are. Talk to your family, friends and neighbours often. Make a phone call to let them know you are okay and check on their wellbeing. Importantly, be kind to yourself and your family – they are the most important people you have. Love them and let them know you love them. Patriotic songs such as ‘I still call Australia home’ and ‘I come from a land down under’ spring to mind. That may be corny to some people but they uplift the spirit - something we will surely need. We are turning more and more urgently to our doctors, nurses and all healthcare professionals including paramedics. They have always been important but now that is truer than ever before. They will be critical to our community’s successful navigation of the frightening challenges we all face. The truth is our healthcare system is and will continue to experience the severest pressure it has ever faced. Our doctors, nurses, paramedics and all health professionals will be pushed and tested in ways we cannot understand or imagine. But every single one of us has a role to play in this. There are very straight forward things that you and I can do to help ensure our healthcare workers are given the best possible environment to see us to the other side of the pandemic. It’s simple. Stay at home so they can go to work. I do not for one second suggest that this act of social distancing is easy, specifically from an emotional and psychological standpoint. We will all be experiencing the challenges that go along with this but now more than ever it is vital. We cannot guarantee 100% elimination of transfer of the virus but by reducing our contact with each other and areas outside of our home we reduce that transfer. By doing so, less of us will be sick at the one time putting less stress on doctors, nurses and our health system. Social media has been filled with pictures of healthcare workers from across the globe holding signs that share the same message. “We stay at work for you. You stay at home for us.” So Caloundra, acknowledge that our doctors, nurses, paramedics and all healthcare professionals will continue to be at significant risk from infection. They know this, they accept it, but their acceptance means we have a clear obligation. Stay apart and remember that we can keep in touch without touching. Stay safe.

You Said It Covid-19 and business

We live in interesting times. The COVID-19 virus is spreading rapidly across the globe and the health, social and economic repercussions that are resulting not only from the virus but also from the actions we must take to address this threat will be with us for at best years, if not decades to come. To reduce the rapid spread of COVID-19, Monday, March 23, saw trading restrictions implemented to reduce social gatherings and enforce personal distancing and, as the new saying goes (and if you’ll pardon my language), “s##t just got real”. Across the Sunshine Coast thousands of staff/ employees lost their jobs as businesses went into survival mode and tried desperately to adapt to the new trading environment or in some cases cut their losses and close their doors. I know so many business owners who are heartbroken this week as they say goodbye to some, most or all of their staff. Staff that are also members of our community, and may be friends in many cases. My heart goes out to all those who have lost and are losing their jobs and businesses as a result of this crisis. Where you can check, please check on your family, friends and community to show support and know that we’re all in this together. I think we should also reach out to and support all those business owners who are planning, adapting and acting to keep their businesses and our commercial centres viable through this crisis. We might not all make it (I hate to say it, but many won’t) but the fighting spirit and entrepreneurial skills displayed are a tribute to you all. A viable, local small business community will be a crucial element in rebuilding our communities and creating employment after this crisis. In hard times we must pull together to support our family, friends, neighbours and wider communities. More than ever, when and where you can, buy local as it supports our local communities. Hail damage

On November 17 last year a severe hailstorm hit our place, causing considerable damage. I want to thank our insurance company, Westfarmers Insurance, for their immediate response and willingness to repair all damage without any reservation. They employed the ABC Group (Australian Building and Construction Group) who were on the job within two days. Everything is now fully restored and to a very high standard. Collison follow up

I and two cyclists from Glass House collided on the bike path near Landsborough on Sunday, March, 22. I am wondering if they had any after effects of the incident. I lost a fair amount of skin and have a very sore left shoulder but was lucky I did not break any bones. Recently we had a mystery water leak in our kitchen wall and needed a plumber urgently. As usual, I turned to the A to Z of Trades & Services in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News, and Dave Warry Plumbing rearranged their day to come out and help us within hours. Next, Refined Plastering came out to fix the resulting hole in the wall and did a perfect job. I’d recommend looking in this regular section of the paper to find quality local businesses, rather than trawling through multiple listings of businesses miles away in an internet search. Warning re home deliveries

Last week GC&M News was contacted by a resident of Glass House Mountains asking us to warn readers to take care with having deliveries left at your home. The resident has a health condition, which means she is currently confined to her home. Her son delivered medical supplies to her and sent her a message to say it was at the front door. By the time she went to retrieve it, it was gone.

Noticeboard 90th birthday celebrations Pam Innes enjoyed a series of 90th birthday celebrations last month. After a family party on Saturday, February 15, Pam was presented with a lovely pot and plant the following day (her actual birthday) by the congregation of Glasshouse Country Anglican Church, and cut a second birthday cake at a morning tea that followed. There was another cake at the Peachester History Committee monthly meeting. Congratulations to Pam, the former long-time editor of Glasshouse County News, on achieving this milestone and continuing to inspire friends and family with her active involvement and contribution to many community organisations in Glasshouse Country.

This means that until further notice all planned outings, our club meetings or any club activities are postponed. However, members are keen to keep in touch with one another electronically until the crisis has passed. If all else fails we can always pick up the phone. It seems like a good time to do some gardening. One member is putting a lot of rocks along the edge of her path, while another is constructing a bush house. Liena Hoffman Maleny Uniting Church Easter is a season of light and darkness. It is a time when we pause at the foot of the cross, when the Earth became dark. So we pause to reflect about darkness: sin, evil, bush fires, floods, pandemics, coronavirus. Suffering. Sorrow. Fear. Death. Many things that are beyond our understanding and that cause anxiety and despair. We pause and reflect upon and taste God’s love: “This is my body broken for you. Take, eat, and do this in memory of me.” But. But we do not remain at the foot of the cross. We move towards Easter Sunday. We move to an empty grave. We step into the light. The light of new life. New opportunities. New chances. The light of hope and dreams. The light of faith and encouragement, of love and grace. Yes, at Easter we need to pause at the cross but we also need to move on to Easter Sunday and proclaim with joy: Christ is Risen. Christ lives! And so do you and I. Blessed Easter Shalom Liena

Rev Ingrid Busk Anglican Church Our world is changing rapidly each day as COVID-19 virus impacts our lives. No longer is it affecting people in lands far from our shores. Public worship and gatherings have been suspended until who knows when? We are in a foreign state, trying to keep connections with our family, friends and parishioners. ’How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land?’ (Psalm 137:4) echoes the cries of the ancient Israelites captive in the foreign land of Babylon. We too find ourselves in a foreign land, unable to gather physically for worship, for sport or a meal with family or friends in public places. We speak a new language of safe distancing, good hygiene practices, self-isolation and quarantine. Psalm 137 speaks of pain and sadness. How then can we sing the songs of the Lord? I’m not a huge fan of cyber space but am very thankful that many of us can ‘gather’ spiritually to pray, worship and to sing our songs to the Lord. Making contact via the telephone and even the almost forgotten handwritten note or card are also ways to stay connected to each other. It is a new experience for most of us, yet we need not fear as we are not alone – ‘Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.’ Isaiah 41:10 This is a time to draw closer to God and to each other even when it is difficult to sing the Lord’s song during this pandemic. However, this is our calling and we will sing the Lord’s song wherever and however we can. We will sing of hope, grace and love. May you and your loved ones be kept safe from the ravages of this virus and may we all encourage, support and care for each other. Blessings. Gardening on the Edge looking back and looking forward to 2021 By Sonia Clark Many annual events, including the Maleny Garden Club’s Gardening on the Edge, have been cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the shutdown, organisers of Gardening on the Edge are looking forward to welcoming garden enthusiasts and the curious to next year’s event, scheduled for June 2021. GC&M News caught up with Gardening on the Edge convenor Jan Maguire to find out more about the history of this annual initiative that has been flourishing for nearly 15 years. The first event was held in 2005 and since then has been an annual event held on the second weekend in June. Jan said the idea for the weekend event was originally to provide an opportunity to give both locals and visitors a chance to visit local gardens.

Visitors from all over South East Queensland and interstate took the opportunity to experience a slice of the abundant natural beauty and simply stunning gardens of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, and over the years the event has become a highlight on the garden lover’s calendar. Jan said the event was relatively straight forward in design. As well as showcasing local gardens, a garden market was also held. During the first few years of the event the market was run at the Maleny High School hall with plant stalls specialising in gorgeous camellias, orchids, bromeliads, roses, natives, herbs and more. Light refreshments were provided by Maleny Garden Club members and visitors could buy tickets to visit the featured local gardens, with free entry to the school hall display. “Over the years we have been very fortunate with club members and non-club members generously offering their gardens for the event,” Jan said. “Our members volunteer their time in many ways, selling tickets at the hall and the gardens, making jams, preserves, cakes, etc, to sell on the club produce stall, and potting up plants for the club plant stall.” As the event grew, it was decided to relocate the market to the Maleny Showgrounds pavilion as it provided much more space for stall holders and more parking for visitors.

“Each year we are delighted to welcome back the stall holders, most of whom have been with us since the very beginning,” Jan said. “The Maleny Hospital Auxiliary have been providing refreshments at the pavilion and the CWA has catered in one of the open gardens for a number of years.” Gardening on the Edge is a wonderful example of a true community event, with local grass roots groups working together to support other local organisations who benefit from the donations received as a result of the event. Over the years the garden club has donated more than $150,000 to worthy local charities and organisations such as the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary, Range Care, SES, Rural Fire Brigade, Maleny Neighbourhood Community Centre, the school chaplaincy programs and the men’s shed. How are you all coping in this radically different COVID-19 world? Although at GC&M News we’ve had to shelve the printed paper for a while and go into what Prime Minister (Scott Morrison) terms business ‘hibernation’, mother nature still continues on her merry way unperturbed. Plants will still grow. They still need fertilising, watering, trimming, mowing, talking to. Aphids, snails, grasshoppers and caterpillars still do what they do best (or is that worst). And us humble gardeners will still need to pull on the gloves, hitch up the barrow and venture into the outside world, away from the work-at-home desk, maybe taking the kids with us, to tend our patch. I’ll be taking solidarity in the knowledge that hundreds, nay thousands, of locals will be doing the same as me … taking solace in the joy of being in the garden. And don’t fear, I’ll still be making some time to scribble a regular column full of tips and hints and ideas. These will be published via the brave new digital world into which we’re rapidly adjusting to. Friday, March 27: A 9-hole single stableford competition was played in our usual chook run with first place going to Richard Mills with 17 points, runners up Anne Devane with 16 points on a count back from Billy Perske and David Werner both 16 points, and third to Alan Jory with 14 points on a count back from Liddie Shaw, also 14 points. Saturday, March 28: The men played in their usual monthly medal, 18-hole nett competition. Contributed by Ken Barker Donna Manning spent nine days competing in the Australian Croquet Association women’s championship and the Eire Cup – the major interstate competition. She reported that the hospitality and conditions were good, that she played well and enjoyed her games. She must have impressed Tasmanian players because she was asked to fill a place in the Tasmanian team in the Eire Cup when they were required to return home early because of the COVID-19 restrictions. This is an honour for her and our club. Well done Donna. On Thursday, March 19, Sally Adams and Helen Uhlmann went down 2-5 to Kath Smith and Janelle Wilson, while Ken Barker beat Nick Cram 16-9 in a good game. Helen and Janelle backed up on the Friday to play a 14 point game that Janelle won by pegging out – very commendable. Saturday, March 21, saw Vince Carbery coaching Helen, Janelle, Jan Trendle and Len Baker followed by two evenly matched games of singles in which all players demonstrated skills well beyond their experience. There was no play on Sunday. Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions with accredited coaches in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
