New car pool facility opens for commuters A new car pool facility, between the Bruce Highway and Pignata Road at Palmview, has opened to the public. Construction of the new car pool facility began in May this year as part of the Bruce Highway Upgrade – Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway. Storm devastated communities not forgotten State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle last week assured residents and business owners throughout Beerwah, Landsborough and Mooloolah that they have not been forgotten after the recent devastating storm that swept through the area. Mr McArdle visited some of the area’s affected properties last Monday to inspect the damage and work with residents to determine the next step for recovery efforts. “I apologise that I could not see everyone who was impacted by the weekend’s storms but from what I have seen in the areas I did visit the damage is extensive,” Mr McArdle said. “I want to assure residents that my office is working to determine what assistance and aid is available to land owners to remove debris, to cut down and cut up damaged trees and secure their property from further loss as a consequence of the storm.

“I have contacted the Premier Anastasia Palaszczuk’s office, the Sunshine Coast Council CEO Mr Michael Whittaker, the Department of Agriculture and the Queensland Reconstruction Authority to ascertain what assistance is available to help our community. “It was heartening to see how our community bands together in difficult times. I have seen neighbours helping neighbours and I encourage everyone to continue to look out for one another while we pull through this. “I am wishing everyone the best as they begin to clean up. I will keep the community updated on my Facebook page with any information we receive from the aforementioned departments regarding aid available to them.” Sunshine Coast Council will be continuing to offer free disposal of domestic storm damaged green waste at both Buderim and Beerwah Resource Recovery Centres until Sunday December 31. Council will also be continuing to clear large storm damaged green waste and mulch on site in Landsborough and Beerwah, to assist residents in the worst affected areas, until this is completed. Free disposal is for genuine storm-related green waste from the weather event on Saturday December 9. Council advises that there may be long queues to access the resource recovery centres and that your patience will be appreciated.

New Cooke Park playground on the way Parks and playgrounds around Maleny seem to be a focus of some people’s attention over recent times. The playground reconstruction in Cooke Park, Maleny stalled in October, with Sunshine Coast Council undertaking a community consultation survey after locals complained about the style of equipment planned. The survey – which closed on November 3 – asked locals to choose between two alternative design options. One was the modern design previously chosen by Council and which could be installed by Christmas; the other being something similar to the timber playground which would not be ready until mid-2018.

A Council spokesperson said that nearly 500 submissions or responses were recorded through returned paper forms, the online survey, emails and phone calls from individuals, community groups and organisations (including a primary school class). “This passionate response revealed a community with diverse views,” stated the Council spokesperson. “The returned paper forms had an almost 50/50 split between the options. “The electronic survey came out strongly in favour of the timber alternative. “With such a divergence of opinions for this designated ‘local’ park, council determined that a compromise needed to be reached.” An online petition with 220 signatures was also generated by members of the community. As a result of the survey, Council has said that the playground will be developed in two stages, with Stage 1 being the caterpillar, swings set and spinner from Option 1 with the installation in early 2018. “Work will include drainage, tree planting, soft fall and concrete edge plus pathway as per the original plan,” the spokesperson explained. “A second stage will include play elements which will be determined based on a collaborative design approach with the Maleny community. “The design and installation of Stage 2 will require confirmation of funding, lead time to establish a steering group and collaborative design time.
Option 2 Construction on this stage is estimated to be undertaken in the next 9-12 months.” Administrator of the ‘Cooke Park Playground Community Group’ Facebook page, Travis Earsman, wrote on social media that “what is clear is that there is easily enough people wishing that the park’s heritage be honoured with a playground of true value to replace the one that we had. “We all wanted this to be quick, and we all knew it likely wouldn’t be,” he wrote. “Jenny McKay assures me that the (originally proposed) playground equipment was carefully selected, but that doesn’t change the fact that it didn’t suit the town and had been commissioned without any real consultation with the public. As I see it, the delay is a follow on from the fact that the wrong equipment was being installed and it had to be stopped.”

Celebrating 50 years of marriage By Sonia Clark Glass House Mountains couple Alan and Carol Roberts recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in style with tickets to the Paul McCartney concert in Brisbane, held the day after their actual anniversary of December 8. The couple were gifted the tickets by their son and daughter in law and by all accounts had a truly memorable night. “We thoroughly enjoyed the show and it’ll definitely be something special to remember – though someone forgot to tell Paul it was our 50th anniversary!” laughed Carol. The couple originally met in Melbourne in 1964 at a dance at Flinders Street Station, organised by the Victorian Rail Institute. Alan remembers that the night was bitterly cold and that after the dance Carol was wearing the warmest coat he had ever seen! “Afterwards I was waiting downstairs for a cab when I saw Carol also waiting in the cab line. She was wearing the biggest, most beautiful coat I had ever seen and so I asked her if I could have her coat! “Of course she said no – so I cheekily said, ‘If you won’t give me your coat then will you go out with me sometime?’ Thankfully she said yes and we took it from there!” Alan said. The couple met while Alan was home on leave from the Navy. In 1967 he was granted a shore posting and the couple married and moved to
Alan and Carol Roberts recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Jervis Bay. In 1969 they relocated to the Logan area where Alan took up a position as a Customs Agent and they raised their two children Angela and Ivan. Around 20 years ago, Alan and Carol retired to the area they had always loved – Glass House Mountains - and their tip for a long a happy marriage is that they are always there for each other and, although quite opposite to each other, they both enjoy the same things. Carol still has her cream coloured mohair coat to this day.

Fatality at Beerwah unit fire Tragedy struck at Beerwah last Thursday night, when Police located a body in a dwelling which was severely damaged by fire. Emergency services were called to a fire in a Beerwah Parade property, adjacent to the Telstra Exchange building, at 6.20pm on December 14, to find the brick lowset unit ablaze and a short time later located a deceased man within the house. Reports by the ABC suggest the man, who was disabled, aged in his 30’s and used a wheelchair,
died in the fire at the back of the building. Investigations are continuing into the identity of the person and the cause of the fire. Story Seat shares the magic On Friday afternoon, December 8, just in time for the Christmas School Holidays, Sunshine Coast Councillor Rick Baberowski launched the first of the region’s 'First 5 Forever' Story Seats, featuring artwork from the popular children’s book ‘I’m a Dirty Dinosaur’, at Pioneer Park at Landsborough. ‘I'm a Dirty Dinosaur’ is a fun, rollicking rhyming story from award-winning author Janeen Brian and award-winning illustrator Ann James about a cheeky dinosaur who loves to play in the mud. The rhyme and repetition throughout the book strikes a chord with young and older readers and is matched with unique and colourful illustrations created using a magic pencil, real mud from a dam and watercolour. Cr Baberowski said the Landsborough Story Seat was the first of 10 to be installed in parks across the region.
“The Story Seat is a colourful, engaging and positive way of encouraging parents and caregivers to play a proactive role in the development of their child’s early literacy skills,” Cr Baberowski said. The seats will be rolled out progressively across the region including one at Montville in the Russell Family Park as well as in Kenilworth Town Park in Kenilworth.

Vale Margaret Woods McCamley The news of the passing of born and bred Maleny local Margaret Woods McCamley on December 3 spread quickly through the local community in the days following, with a sense of disbelief that at 51, someone who had still been so young, vibrant and full of life, was no longer with us. The huge crowd of around 600 people that came together at the Gregson & Weight’s Chapel at Buderim last week for a celebration of Margaret’s life was a testament to the number of people’s lives that Margaret had touched. The service was led by Maleny High School’s former Chappy, Chris Davis, who had worked alongside Margaret when she led the school’s Chaplaincy committee. Margaret, born in Nambour in 1966, was the eldest child of seven born to dairy farmers Florence (Flo) and the late Francis (Frank) Woods. After being educated at Maleny primary and high schools, Margaret attended Burdekin Agricultural College, graduating with a Diploma in Agriculture. Whilst attending the Burdekin Ag College, Margaret joined the CMF and served in the Army Reserve with the Australian Army 31st Independent Rifles, and she was also a nurse for a number of years. Margaret had three daughters, Kelly Ann, Wanetta and Belinda, with her first husband and later went on to foster and ultimately adopt Cynthia and Marie Anne.

Winston Johnson, who shared the eulogy at the service, explained that Margaret’s fostering and adopting of the girls was not an unusual act of kindness by Margaret, as for most of her adult life, Margaret had given sanctuary in her home to families in difficult circumstances. In the year 2000 Margaret was introduced to Greg McCamley. As Greg’s employment took him to remote areas, he and Margaret continued a long distance relationship and eventually they married in 2008. The wedding took place at the Woods family’s One Tree Hill farm on Mountain View Road and the wedding service was performed by Chris ‘Chappy’ Davis. Following their wedding, Margaret moved from Maleny for a short time living in Innisfail. However when Greg’s job took him to Mt Isa, being a Maleny girl at heart Margaret returned home with Belinda and, over the next three years, Greg would commute until finally moving permanently to Maleny. Over the years Margaret developed strong connections in the Maleny community, supporting many local organisations including Quota, the Maleny Show Society, Blackall Range Care, Maleny High School Chaplaincy, Maleny High P&C, Fat Quilters, the Maleny Police by caring for families at risk, and Beyond Blue, as well as campaigning for a Hydro Therapy pool for Maleny. During her working life, Margaret worked on the farm, cleaned for Maleny Sadies, nursed

at Maleny Hospital, assisted at the Maleny Amcal Pharmacy, assisted with Palliative Care at Erowal and, in recent years, was the voice behind the letterboxes at the Maleny Post Office Mail Room. Growing up, Margaret’s family was actively involved in their church and she had a strong religious faith. At the service there were many people who paid tribute to Margaret, including her sister Janet, her daughters, friends, and members of her church group, all sharing many anecdotes of Margaret and her antics. Margaret was described as a good friend and a formidable enemy; she wasn’t the kind of person who left you wondering what she thought, because if she thought it, then she probably said it. She was described as a loud, noisy, happy, friendly, person who was caring and compassionate, who could work hard and, on occasion, play hard. Margaret wouldn’t go to a party, she was the party. She was one tough lady, bold as brass on the outside, but she could be super sensitive on the inside. She was kind and generous, loved her family and friends and contributed much to the lives of others.

Opportunity for local wedding market
A group of wedding suppliers who provide bridal services in the Hinterland were so confident the Same-Sex Marriage Bill would be passed that they have already created a successful business network to provide the LBGT community “with sensational weddings in our beautiful local area”. That’s according to group spokesperson Clive Waring from Rainbow Wedding Photography, who said it is estimated that $650 million will be spent by the LGBT community on weddings in 2018. “The Sunshine Coast and the Hinterland are well positioned to capture a reasonable percentage of this business,” Clive said. “To celebrate the passing of the new law, our group hosted a mock event with two same sex couples on Sunday December 10 at Montville Country Cabins, a beautiful 17 acre property at the end of Western Avenue, Montville.” The event brought together a range of wedding suppliers, including marriage celebrants Ruth Kuss and Merlin Coughlan who wrote the vows and officiated for the two couples. The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce ‘Christmas Movie Night’ literally got washed out. What a pity, a real disappointment, especially for the children. But, don’t worry; we will reschedule a Movie Night, possibly before school starts in January. Watch for an advertisement in GC&M News further down the track. The Chamber Christmas Get Together was a real success. Well over 20 members and friends took part and we all enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere with excellent food at Club Glass House. Looking back on 2017, the Chamber can be proud of some good outcomes and moves in the right direction. Our constant complaint about the lousy mobile phone reception has finally been heard and new towers are planned through the Government’s Black Spot Program. Thank you, Andrew Wallace, for working hard in the background to get this outcome for the people of Glasshouse Country. The towers should be built and operational sometime during 2018. As you know, the Chamber received funding from the Federal Government to install CCTVs in Glass House, Beerwah and Landsborough a couple of years ago and all maintenance and servicing costs are currently paid by the Chamber. It is the Chamber’s aim to keep businesses and locals safe at all time. Information received from police indicates that the CCTVs are very effective and have helped solve several disturbances in our area. We are currently negotiating with the State Government to get some funding to ease the financial burden on the Chamber. Tourism is another very significant item on the Chamber’s agenda and hopefully we can report some positive developments soon. I wish everybody a Merry Christmas and all the very best for 2018. Our next Chamber Function will be on February 20 and we will be meeting in Landsborough.

EPICC, which stands for enabling and promoting an inclusive creative community, is the name of a group of young creative people with disabilities who meet every Friday at the Maleny Neighbour Centre for a day of creative and social activities. The group recently held an event at the Old Witta School where they launched their new CD- ‘Just Try An’ Stop Me’ which features 13 songs that are a culmination of the group's work over the last year. Three members of the group who are physically challenged and unable to express themselves verbally were able to do so with the aid of 'Facilitated communication’. With the support of their wonderful carers and teachers they were given the opportunity to create stories, poetry and music. They had also made and acted in a short film that was full of fun and laughter. Following the event, one audience member said: “After a very wonderful and entertaining evening at a concert performed by EPICC, I will no longer be looking at people with disabilities in the same way. “Instead of focussing on their disabilities, I will be wondering what extraordinary abilities and talents they have. “Some of the content was deep and profound and some humorous and light hearted, a true insight into a world one would not normally be a party to,” she said.
Sue, a mum who has helped form the group, said: “It is very rewarding to have my daughter involved in a program that engages her intellectually and creatively. “Just because she has disabilities doesn’t mean she has no desire to learn. Jacklyn enjoys the group immensely and it has made her become much more confident,” Sue said. The group would love some new members and is open to people of all ages with a disability. Often potential members are unable to attend due to lack of transport, so they would be very open to hearing from volunteers who may be able to help with picking up and dropping off. Christmas brings new devices... think e-waste recycling National recycling service provider TechCollect has release research findings which shows that Australians are e-waster hoarders, with almost half of us (43%) holding onto unused or broken electronic devices in case we need them again one day. And with electronic devices being a popular Christmas gift item, TechCollect is asking that people clean out their old items rather than keeping them in the cupboard. TechCollect Chief Executive Officer Carmel Dollisson says we all need to take an active role in being responsible for recycling our e-waste. “The challenge is encouraging consumers to let go of old devices they are no longer using or which are actually broken beyond repair,” she said. “Although devices can hold sentimental value, the non-renewable resources in them can be used in manufacturing when recycled correctly. “Our new research tells us the average Australian household has approximately 17 electronic
devices in the home and yet only 23% of us are always recycling them. “With the consumption of electronic devices getting higher all the time, it’s crucial consumers look at e-waste recycling as the natural next step in the product lifecycle, especially when it no longer serves its purpose to them.” The survey also found that only 33% of us utilise local e-waste recycling services, and a whopping 63% don’t even know if their local council has an e-waste facility. Luckily for us, Sunshine Coast Council has a great e-waste collection service at all the transfer stations. And best of all... it’s totally free. Examples of e-waste include printers, televisions, scanners, video game consoles, computers, laptops and monitors, and their cords and leads. E-waste contains recyclable materials. These materials commonly include, but are not limited to glass, plastics, metals and alloys such as iron, steel, aluminium and copper, and precious metals such as gold, platinum and silver.
A good review for Bankfoot House The Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct was recently presented with a Certificate of Recognition following participation in an intensive Standards Review Program assessing collection management practices against ‘The National Standards for Australian Museums and Galleries’. This involved working through a year-long program, which helped them to recognise their achievements, improve their practices and raise their profile. Arts and Heritage Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the program offered a valuable opportunity to access independent advice on the management of these priceless community assets. “The Standards Program Reviewers
congratulated council and the Friends of Bankfoot House for the work we have undertaken cataloguing and digitising the collection, the ongoing connection with families associated with the House, the series of studies and plans developed to guide the care and further development of the precinct and the collection and the tours delivered by the Friends of Bankfoot House,” Cr Baberowski said. The program focused on identifying future audiences and the development of an interpretation plan for the precinct as it approaches a significant milestone next year – the celebration of 150 years of Bankfoot House.

Libraries change lives with the gift of literacy Many of us take for granted the ability to read a book or the back of a medicine bottle. But if we couldn’t, it is great to know that our local library can help – and it’s free. In December, 115 Adult Literacy students and tutors attended an end-of-year celebration to acknowledge their hard work and commitment to improving literacy skills. Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Council’s Libraries have provided free literacy training to adults between 15 and 76 years of age, with the dedicated support of trained volunteers, for the past 28 years. “Our adult literacy students include school leavers, parents, grandparents, workers, unemployed, people with physical/intellectual disabilities, migrants and many others,” Cr McKay said.

“These people, for a variety of reasons, may be prohibited from participating in activities that involve reading, writing, speaking, numeracy and basic digital literacy. “This free course is certainly life changing and one council is extremely proud of.” One student who was keen to share her story at the end-of-year celebration on December 4 was Kay Frohlich, who is originally from Thailand and is now living in Maleny. Kay arrived on the Sunshine Coast in 2010 and started working as a kitchen hand in a Thai restaurant. Kay said she was very lucky to learn from the restaurant owners and two years later, took over the Sukhothai restaurant, fondly named after her home village in Thailand. “To assist in running my business, I started attending the Adult Literacy classes at Maleny Library in 2013,” she said. “My English has improved greatly as my tutors are very good and help me to pronounce my words. “I really enjoyed attending the end-of-year celebration with all the friends I have made since joining the class.” Kay’s is just one of the many stories that come from the inspirational people who attend the Sunshine Coast Libraries Adult Literacy Program. New playgroup
Hinterland family support worker Suky Oliver works closely with families fthroughout the local area. She is super excited to be planning a brand new supported playgroup at Landsborough CWA Hall which will kick off on Thursday January 18 and will meet on Thursdays from 9.30am-11.30am during school terms. The playgroup will be organised through the Caloundra Community Centre Family Support Program and will offer “messy creative play” activities, a chance to meet other local parents and carers, and an opportunity to access parenting information in a fun and informal environment. Ahead of that date, Suky is planning to be “out and about” in the community. She will be at Pioneer Park, Landsborough on Thursday January 11 (9.30am -11.30am) and Turner Park, Beerwah (9.30am -11.30am) on Monday January 15. She will have a play mat set up, a blackboard and Caloundra Community Centre flags placed nearby – so pop over and say hi and find out more about family support services. Christmas came early
Good Neighbour of the Year award
The final meeting of the year for Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch Queensland on December 12 was a ‘portmanteau’ one as it consisted of a delicious light Christmas lunch (beautifully organised by Maree Anderson and Helen Butcher despite the problems caused by the storm on Saturday), then a brief ordinary meeting, followed by the announcement of the Good Neighbour of the Year, Dorothy Robb, who established the native flora walk at Peachester State School. Unfortunately, neither Dorothy, nor her nominator, Coral Beutel, was able to be present, so Mavis, Dorothy's mother-in-law, received the award on her behalf.
The residents of Glasshouse Views had a special visit last Saturday by the Glasshouse Mountains Ulysses Bike Club who made their annual pilgrimage to the aged care home to show off their bikes and take the residents for joy rides. Residents always eagerly anticipate this event and this year was no exception. One resident, Fran Day, gave the experience a 10 out of 10! Another resident, Max Scarr, who was initially reluctant to go for a ride, but was persuaded by a friend, reckoned it was excellent – so excellent, that he lined up for a second ride. Trina Haylock, Glasshouse Views Lifestyle Coordinator, echoed the residents’ enthusiasm for these rides. “They were so happy, their faces lit up with anticipation and when they returned from their rides they were exhilarated,” she said. “Aside from the busy Christmas schedule at Glasshouse Views, where Christmas lights bus tours, parties and family lunches are enjoyed, the Ulysses visit is a definite highlight.
Ailene Wrayford’s response was: “I loved it!” “The Ulysses members were so good with everyone, making us all feel like part of their family. We thank them so much, it was great fun,” Trina said. The motorcycle club uses the Ulysses name because it describes the spark for adventure that older members seek by riding motorcycles. By sharing this spark and the thrill of the ride with the residents, the Glasshouse Mountains Ulysses Bike Club shows true generosity of spirit, and it’s warmly received.

Please keep feeding the ‘Piggy Banks’ Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) works to reduce hardship in our local area and is committed to supporting the community. Their ‘Piggy Bank’ program has been running for nearly two years now and funds raised go toward their Emergency Relief program. Every month MNC provides food for an average of 63 adults and 45 children, costing around $1,000 a month. Anne Delmas from MNC said: “Maleny is an incredible town when it comes to business and community support, and we want to thank all the businesses in town that have placed a piggy bank on their counter to capture their customers’ spare change or donations. “We also want to thank Maleny Credit Union for the initiative in the first instance and who keep us supplied with piggy banks. “You may have seen one on a shop counter when shopping locally, next time, if you have some spare change, please pop it into the piggy and know that
your funds are helping those in our community who need emergency relief,” Anne said. Cast your vote for Beerwah Library mural Four local artists have been commissioned by Sunshine Coast Council to create concept designs for a proposed mural to be painted on one of the external walls of Beerwah Library. The community are invited to cast their vote on their favourite concept design by artists David Houghton, Steven Bordonaro, Mieke Salna and Wayne Smith. The theme of the concepts should capture the location of Beerwah, the people, the history, the flora and fauna while focusing on the experience a library brings to its
visitors. The concepts will be displayed in the Beerwah Library foyer from Tuesday January 2 until Saturday January 27. The winner will be announced mid-February 2018. Additional funding will be sought to commission the successful artist to complete the mural. Morris House Neighbourhood Centre News Contributed by Ann Husband The year has been a busy one at Morris House. We have started a new partnership with Integrated Family and Youth Service (IFYS) which has greatly assisted our emergency relief program. Landsborough Adventist Church community has provided much needed funds and donations of food. Glasshouse Country Anglican Church Community has provided donations of food. The Rotary Club of Glass House Mountains also donated funds for our emergency relief. Parklands Bakery has provide bread and other bakery items during the year. We sincerely thank all of these people who donated their time and did fundraising for us, and who donated food and money so that we can assist those who need help in our community. Thanks to Sunshine Coast Council who provide a running cost grant so we can pay the bills!
I would like to thank Morris House Volunteers who do such a great job of keeping Morris House open and who assist our clients with compassion and empathy. Without all these amazing people and organisations, Landsborough would be a poorer place to be. We always need volunteers, so if you are interested and have half a day per week to spare, call and see us when we re-open. Helping others in the community is a rewarding job and for a few hours per week you can do this as well as meeting new people and making new friends. I hope you all came through the storm without serious damage. Morris House closed on December 15 and will re-open on January 15. We hope you all have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

Local Eats Get your juices in Landsborough It's official – 'The Juicery’ at Henry & Co in Landsborough is now operating, just in time for summer, and for those of us making resolutions about eating more healthily in the New Year they have plenty of great options. They have created an extensive menu of premium coldpress juices and smoothies, and some very tempting acai bowls, the Tropical Dream and Raw Cacoa Bowl, and they have even created an Acai Smoothie for those that just can’t choose which one they prefer.

These days, Christmas starts in November and ends well into January! I’m a big believer in enjoying what we eat, especially on Christmas Day. However, I also believe that this doesn’t need to come at a cost to your health. Here are my tips for staying on track(ish) whilst enjoying the Silly Season: 1. Buy brown paper bags to share leftovers. Why not send food home with family and friends so that everyone can enjoy a little without overdoing it? 2. Practice Gratitude. My Grandmother’s childhood Christmas delight was an orange in her stocking. How often do we throw away food with little thought for how privileged we were to have it in the first place? An attitude of gratitude cultivates respect for our food. 3. Pick your indulgences. Enjoy treat foods when it’s meaningful and say ‘no’ when it’s not. 4. Start your meal with salad or veggies. Research shows that if we eat our salad or veggies first, we tend to eat less overall. 5. Share a (more) healthy offering that’s delicious AND nutritious. Lastly, be kind to yourself. The festive season can be challenging with food and you may be tempted to beat yourself up. Resist this all or nothing thinking; a little bit of fun doesn’t hurt if you’re eating well most of the time!

Thank you Landsborough for a special year “Without you and your support, ‘the little centre with a big difference’ would just not be the same,” says KinderMarlee director Sue Eadie. What is it that makes this little early childhood centre in Mill Street so special?
For a couple of years now, the centre has proudly operated on a model different to that of more traditional child care centres, where children are generally separated by age, and their activities organised in isolation of each other. “Here at KinderMarlee we treat children as independent, competent little citizens of their worlds, each with an inherent right to build a strong sense of home and individuality, as well as community,” says Sue.

It’s the same feeling I felt when I walked through the front door for the first time just over 12 months ago,” says Sue. “I also think KinderMarlee is a reflection of the diversity and warmth of Landsborough people themselves. You don’t find that in many places.”

When not participating in specialised activities, the children are free to wander and wonder, be who they truly are, be alone or be with others. “Importantly,” Sue says, “the focus is to teach so the children learn by inspiration and enquiring, all at a pace that is flexible, unhurried and encouraging.” KinderMarlee also provides for brothers and sisters to be together, if and when they choose. Studies have shown that children in mixed age groups generally have more varied interactions which help give greater benefits than might occur among children restricted to mixing only with their peers in segregated rooms. The centre is also gaining recognition throughout Queensland’s early education industry.

However, nothing stays the same for long at the centre. “The KinderMarlee way is dynamic and changes to suit the individuality of all our children as they learn, develop and grow their own personalities and characters," says Sue. “It might sound a little unusual, however learning through play and hands-on investigation is achieving some great and rewarding results. “2017 has been a great year, and although we are sad to say farewell to our kindergarten graduates, we are all looking forward to 2018 and welcoming lots of new children into the KinderMarlee Family. “Once again Landsborough, thank you for making us part of your special community.”

School News Talented bunch at Mooloolah
Contributed by Michelle Lenz Just before the school year ended, students at Mooloolah State School showed off in true style participating in their own ‘Mooloolah’s Got Talent’ Quest. They could sing, Ezra the contortionist dance, play an instrument or entertain the crowds in their own unique style. Students of all ages gave it a go with hula hoops, juggling, singing, dancing, movement and even our own contortionist. In the end it came down to five finalists who performed in front of the whole school, parents, teachers and community members. The Year 6 girl group took out the competition and second place was Ezra in Year 3 and third place went to Prep students AJ and Maddie. Prep students AJ and Maddie
Exceptional school leaders Contributed by Sally Joyce Peachester State School has had an exceptional team of school leaders during 2017. Within our small school they have played a strong role in nurturing our younger students in the classroom and the playground. Some of our Year 6 boys have run chess club at lunch time for all grades and the girls have run games on the oval that have included the whole school. Two of our Year 6 students, Maddy S and Cooper J, have competed at state level in school athletics and Maddy also in state tennis.
Our Year 6 kids have had a particularly great year in combined schools sports, music and language, this year competing against the larger schools. It will be hard to say farewell to this particular group of Year 6 students but we know they are well and truly ready for high school and we wish them all the best. We know that Peachester State School will always hold a special place in their hearts and we look forward to welcoming them back to community events in 2018.

An awesome year at Glass House Early Education 2017 has been an awesome year at Glass House Early Education Centre and Co-ordinator Ange Hardey would love to thank the staff, the families, the children and the community for an incredible year of support. The Centre has gone from strength to strength and the staff are excited to be welcoming new faces to their ‘Centre Family’ in 2018. Earlier this year Ange and staff members engaged with the local environment group GMAN (Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network) to help launch their native ‘sensory’ garden. “The focus for this year has been all about providing a more sustainable service and strengthening our bonds with the local community,” explains Ange. Now children are enjoying an outdoor play area filled with all local native plants and species as well as access to educational programs which has encouraged families to discover and support local ecosystems and source and grow sustainable bush tucker plants. Another exciting initiative launched this year involved staff training towards achieving their ‘Cosmic Kids’ yoga qualifications and a dedicated established for yoga practice. “Embedding yoga within the Centre’s service has been an important addition for us this year. It follows the goals of our Healthy Body Program and helps promote healthy habits while supporting behaviour and positive social interactions. It is part of our long term commitment to encourage and educate the children in the importance of healthy choices,” explains Ange. This year also saw the unveiling of the extremely
popular ‘Pirate Ship’ in the outdoor play area as well as number of exciting developmental programs such as the ‘Paddock to Plate vegetable awareness program’. The staff and families at the Centre also threw their support behind a number of charity campaigns and local community ventures including being a collection point for ‘Share the Dignity’ charity and supporting the ‘It’s in the bag’ Christmas charity campaign. These campaigns as well as other projects throughout the year formed part of the Centre's ongoing commitment to supporting community initiatives. While they cater for all early childhood care – did you know Glass House Early Education Centre also offers a quality driven Kindergarten program with highly experienced teaching staff? With the convenience of providing long day care hours if required, both working and at home parents may also be eligible for the government funded Kindergarten program subsidy offered through the Centre. Providing complete social and emotional preparation for school, the (kindergarten) school ready room focuses on developing independence and self reliance in children. Building ability and confidence, developing sound decision making choices and encouraging children to ask for assistance if required are some of the skills the children develop – all within an engaging and stimulating environment. Silvia Thomas is the early childhood teacher at Glass House Early Education Centre and as a highly qualified teaching professional she brings 30 years experience to her position. Running the
‘School Readiness Room’, Silvia loves engaging with the four and five year olds as she helps them build the skills and knowledge to ensure the smoothest transition possible to ‘big school’. The Centre has a strong focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities as well as plenty of nature inspired play. Earlier this year the classroom added a brand new interactive ‘Smart Board’ which is proving to be very exciting for the school ready children. With school holidays underway, it is not too late to book in for childcare options during the break. You Said It Thanks to Glasshouse Country community
There are times in life when you can be lost for the spoken words (and can't get them past the lump in throat anyway) to adequately express your emotions and gratitude and the mist in your eyes clouds the notes you have written. This has been the case for Margaret and me over recent weeks. We have chosen to use the most powerful and loudest voice in this community to convey our thanks and appreciation to all of you we have worked and associated with over the past sixteen years of living in Glasshouse Country. We have not been able to see or speak to all those in the community with whom we wished to share a handshake, a hug or a prayer. Until we meet again, we wish you all a happy, safe and holy Christmas and successful future, as we move on to share the next stage of our lives with family. God bless you and thank you. Farewell and thanks Bob McLean and his wife Margaret moved to Glasshouse Country back in 2002, and since that time Bob’s vision and drive made a positive difference to our community. Such a person he is. Bob and Margaret recently made the decision to move out of the area, for family reasons and they leave behind a list of community achievements that are almost unique, and which they can be justifiably proud of. Bob joined Rotary in Boonah in 1973 and on his arrival to Beerwah he continued his membership, including a stint as president of the Rotary Club of Glass House Mountains in 2004/2005. He has been awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship, and is the holder of a Sapphire Pin, the highest award a Rotarian can receive. In 2004 the Glasshouse Country Garden Expo began as a Rotary Project. Bob, as the president of Rotary at the time, was the principal driver of this, and continued to be involved through the Festival’s morphing into the Glasshouse Country Festival. Bob and Margaret were active members of the Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society, and Bob was the president for two years. Bob was also involved in the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce from 2005 through a number of organisation name changes over the years, and he was its president in 2014. Bob and Margaret have also both been active members of the Queensland Country Party and LNP for over 25 years, and Bob has been branch treasurer. One of Bob’s enduring legacies to the area was his involvement in establishing the Glasshouse Men’s Shed in 2009 and he has been an active member

since that time, including president for two years. Bob had prostate cancer in 2012, and realised the need for a support and information group for men locally suffering from the condition. Bob has organised regular open community meetings since that time for both those suffering and their partners and support crew to give them an opportunity to share and learn together. Bob ran as a candidate for Division 1 of the Sunshine Coast Council in 2012, however he was unsuccessful in his attempt. He has also been an active member of the Beerwah Catholic community and taking responsibility for the maintenance work at the Mary MacKillop Centre. All of these community achievements would not have been possible without the 100% support from Margaret. Thanks, Bob and Margaret. Our deep gratitude and best wishes go with you. Graham Nicholson

With votes finally counted and preferences allocated, its clear Annastacia Palaszczuk had more appeal to Queenslanders than Tim Nicholls at the recent election. Yet an increasing number of voters chose to support smaller alternative parties, most likely because of the growing view that the major parties tend to be too self-serving and bow down too readily to big business interests, developers and mining companies. The significant drift away from the LNP in their primary vote was most notable, although even Labor's primary vote dropped by 2%. The LNP barely won a seat north of Gladstone, reflecting as much

as anything a disconnect with rural and regional communities. Yes, Andrew Powell did well here in Glass House, but notably One Nation was hot on their heels with 23% of the primary vote. Good on the Greens for winning the seat of Maiwar in Brisbane, their overall vote reaching 10% across the state, their highest ever; is it as good as it gets for the Greens? Some of their policies are contradictory, such as expressing concern for the loss of biodiversity and wanting more low-cost housing, yet supporting high immigration levels. Here on the Sunshine Coast the natural environment is our greatest asset, but have we got politicians in place that understand this? I heard Robbie Katter on ABC radio prior to polling day. He expressed the view that if Queenslanders want to loosen the grip of big business interests in the state, if they want the concerns of ordinary people better addressed, then they should look to the smaller parties and potential independents. He said if we keep putting the big parties in to rule in majority parliaments then "the lights will gradually go out for small business, farmers and ordinary people". Nevertheless, the next three (or is it four now?) years should be an interesting time. I wish Annastacia well. Jon Woodlands Cambroon
Maleny Community Precinct clarification
Thank you, GC&M News, for the article included in last week’s edition, which opens up the conversation about community parkland on the Maleny Community Precinct or indeed anywhere in Maleny, discounting the overburdened picnic ground at Mary Cairncross. We wish to clarify that, contrary to Cr Jenny McKay’s comment that we are a "group that has been pushing for a dog park", our supporters are by no means confined to dog owners. The copious comments on our website communitymaleny.org attest to this. We would also like to clarify that the Precinct master plan is based on the leasing of sites to incorporated entities, to the detriment of the community at large which by its nature cannot be incorporated. The huge Northern Wetland leased by Unity Water is publicly inaccessible, although we are advised that walking trails are a possibility. The vast area leased to the Maleny Golf Club is exclusive to players. The lease-holders of heritage-listed Pattemore House disallow picnicking on the spacious grounds surrounding the house, while the beautiful site known as the Pocket or Platypus Bend leased to the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club, vacant for seven years, is still slated for development as a ‘sports park’. The remaining, unleased land comprises roads, verges, environmentally protected areas and the
Maleny Trail for walkers and runners. Intrepid picnickers can find a spot but a recreational park requires extensive, level open space for which Platypus Bend is ideally suited. What could be nicer? Or simpler. Such a park would complement the “community open space” flagged by Cr McKay on a site currently “marked (for) development” on a location “around” the Precinct which, from this description, suggests a setting far better suited to an aquatic centre than flood-prone Platypus Bend. Precinct for everybody
At the beginning of November my husband Shaun was suddenly and very unexpectedly taken very ill while at work. He had to have emergency surgery and after a total of 28 days in hospital he has been allowed home, still with daily visits from the nursing team to aid his ongoing recovery. We would just like to thank a few locals who have done everything they can to help us at this worrying time. Alan and the team at Beerwah Small Engines, Lea, Brownie and the team at Glasshouse Country & Maleny News, Beerwah Surgery, Beerburrum State School, Pasta d'Vine, Caboolture Hospital and Glass House Early Education Centre. It’s great to know that the Council is seriously considering turning some currently unused land on the Maleny Precinct into a public park and picnic area. The benefits for local people are obvious. It’s important though not to forget another group. We volunteer at the Visitor Information Centre and Mary Cairncross Reserve as well as in other local organisations. From our contacts with international and, importantly, day tourists from places like Brisbane, it is our overwhelming impression that they mostly come to Maleny to enjoy the beautiful, natural environment as an escape from urban life. Requests are always for walks, waterfalls and picnic areas; here our current options are sadly restricted. The new Education Centre at Mary Cairncross is a great success but one consequence is that the picnic area is often over full, particularly at peak times like weekends and school holidays. We need more options. Currently, the walk beside the Obi through the Precinct has been a success both with locals and visitors. We commonly recommend it to visitors and have received enthusiastic feedback. How much more appealing would it be if visitors could both walk and picnic in a spacious, green environment, yet one so close to the businesses of Maleny? With Australian Red Cross Blood Service Well there is plenty of excitement surrounding Santa’s planned visit to town, but you may not know that there is another important visit just after Christmas Day and that is the Red Cross Donormobile. Things2Do Dive into Woodford Festival
By Sonia Clark This year will be the 31st year of the internationally recognised Woodford Folk Festival. Visitors are invited to ‘dive into’ the delicious diversity of acts, entertainment and experiences that make up this unique annual event that runs from December 27 through to January 1. Now in its 23rd year at the sprawling ‘Woodfordia’ site, the six day and six night festival is an inspiring experience not to be missed – whether you come for a day or immerse yourself in the full six days with a season pass. Catering to all ages and all types of sensory expression, the festival represents a sea of creativity, energy and engagement. With over 400 events and over 2000 performers, the program features everything from big name concerts from a wealth of international and local talent, to street theatre, comedy, a film festival, acoustic sets, arts and crafts workshops, talks and debates, late night cabarets and more. New Year’s Eve is always a huge drawcard at Woodford and there is also a complete children’s festival nestled within the site. There will be 35 performance venues and the festival streets will be filled with stalls, food venues, bars and parades. This year the festival will operate its ‘cashless payment’ system at all bars and the majority of outlets – top up points are available on site and to find out more head to the website. Tickets will only be available online and although early bird pricing has sold out, prices are still cheaper if you purchase before December 24. Camping options are available as well as tickets for day/night, NYE and season passes. Programs can be picked up at the usual outlets around the Hinterland. Re-imagined 2018 – a mixed media fibre art challenge!
Expressions of interest are currently being called for a unique fibre/textile project entitled ‘Re-imagined 2018’. The brainchild of local rugmaker Judi Tompkins and her WA counterpart Jo Franco, the challenge is an invitation for all rug makers/textile artists throughout the Southern Hemisphere to share their work in a ‘virtual exhibition’. This mixed media opportunity is free and open to any mixed media textile/ fibre artist. There is no size restriction and the work can be either 2D or 3D with the finished works created solely for the challenge to be submitted as an emailed digital image. The ‘virtual exhibition’ is a wonderful way for artists in the Southern hemisphere to share their ideas and imagination with others. Over the years Judi and Jo have been amazed by the way people in the Southern Hemisphere have approached this craft so differently from those in the Northern Hemisphere. “With this in mind, we felt it was time that our mixed media/ fibre artists had an opportunity to share their creativity,” Judi said. “Most opportunities are based in the Northern Hemisphere – even if an artist here is eligible to enter they often find the timelines to be unrealistic and the cost of shipping and insuring a piece of art prohibitive – so this will be an easy and accessible way for people to share their work.” Expressions of interest close December 31. Work will be reviewed by a team of international professional fibre /textile artists who will choose 20 entries from the challenge pieces to be shown in the final virtual exhibition. Witta will play host to a mesmerising form of chamber music that’s guaranteed to surprise and delight, when Bungarribee presents a oneoff intimate performance on Sunday January 7. The Old School Hall at Witta will see Bungarribee come together for a performance that a group spokeperson promises will be “pure pleasure for the listener”. Bungarribee is Paul Cutlin (reeds), Gary Daley (accordion and piano), Tunji Beier (percussion) and Ollie Miller (cello). Paul, Gary and Ollie all hail from Sydney, whilst internationally acclaimed percussionist, Tunji Beier, is a resident of Blackall Range. “Bungarribee is led by composer, accordionist and pianist Gary Daley, who performs in some of Australia’s most iconic jazz and world music bands, such as The Catholics,” the spokesperson said. Australian Film Festival returns
Maleny’s Australian Film Festival next month will be spread over the whole Australia Day weekend from Friday to Sunday, January 26 to 28, with four feature films released in 2017 to be screened, with one repeated and four award-winning short films. Veteran character actor Max Cullen, the festival’s special guest, will share his experience of over four decades in the Australian film industry in a Q&A session. Another session will feature short films made about the Hinterland and its history, with opportunities to speak to some of the film makers. An innovation will be a ‘drop in’ centre in the Community Centre’s Verandah Room, where patrons can relax and chat between sessions. The traditional wine and cheese function to launch the festival will be held there on the Friday at 5pm. Festival director Andrew Wallace said that overall there would be rather more romance and humour this time around. “But as well as being great entertainment, the four movies are an interesting sampling of current cultural concerns in our nation,” he said. “We hope patrons will make the most of the ‘festival experience’ of intensive viewing and stimulating talk. Australia Day at the Maleny Showgrounds is once more going to be a great way for families to hang out together, kicking off around 7am with the famous Big Breakfast from the Apex Club of Maleny. At 7.30am the Maleny Singers will accompany the Flag Raising and New Citizens' Ceremony at the TS Centaur Cadets Building, and then the fun starts with the Aussie Day Expo on the Dave Hankinson Oval from 8.30am-noon. Supported by the Sunshine Coast Council, free entry to the Expo means everyone can get hands-on with interactive displays from a wide variety of community groups, and can partake in the fun and games on the oval till midday. Games for the kids (of all ages) include Tug of War, Obstacle Races, Sack Races, Gumboot Throwing and an Aussie Day Thong Relay. Food, good coffee and displays from the Hinterland's many and varied community groups will make this a wonderful morning out. Take a leisurely stroll around the grounds or get active with the kids. You can win fantastic family prizes in the Expo Passport Draw, drawn at 11.30am, simply by collecting a stamp in your passport from each display. Christmas Messages 2017 Colours of Christmas
The annual Christmas Tree Festival at the Maleny Uniting Church kicked off over the weekend, putting lots of smiles on the faces of those who have already had a chance to check out this year’s colourful display. The Girl Guides tree features items that are recycled and handmade throughout the year by Guides and their families. This year for the first time the talented Knitfest crew have decorated a tree with beautifully knitted items. There is still plenty of time to head along this week and be inspired by this Chelsea Large puts the year’s forest of colour, with the display finishing touches on the Girl open from 2pm-8pm each weekday Guides Christmas Tree and 10am-8pm this Saturday. On Sunday you will be able to see the display from 10am-7pm, with the Church’s Christmas Eve service on from 7am, and on Christmas Day there will be a service at 8am. Once the children have had a look at all the trees there will also be some hands-on activities in the Kids Play Zone to keep them busy. This year, at our Christmas Party on Thursday December 14 members pooled together donations from money that they would have spent on gifts. With generous support from our local IGA and Woolworths stores, gift vouchers were purchased to provide a little more Christmas cheer to the tables of those less fortunate than themselves. Pastor Aaron Jackson from The Church on the Rise was approached to assist with the distribution of these gifts to our local community. Our final meeting for 2017 was a hilarious and very funny affair with members enjoying the company of other clubs. Christmas Messages 2017 Peachester Christmas
Plenty of Peachester locals braved the recent storm to attend the successful Peachester Community Christmas Barbecue. Most people arrived in the middle of the storm, many of them dripping wet just getting from their cars into the hall – there was water everywhere! The hall was decorated with Christmas lights that the Hall Committee was able to purchase through a small Council Festive Funding Grant.

Contributed by Gary Rose The Mooloolah Valley Community Association recently held their annual Christmas Party for the local community. Members of the recently chartered Mooloolah Valley Lions Club manned the trailer to cook the rissoles and sausages for this event. The Lions took this opportunity to present Kristy and Simon Hislop a cheque for $2,000 for young Jackson Hislop, who suffers from cerebal palsy. Unfortunately young Jackson was not the happiest on this occasion due to the inclement weather. The funds will help him receive much-needed therapy to help him learn to walk.

At the recent Maleny Christmas Festival, four talented young friends, Connor Keogh, Angus Lisle, Zak Nathan and Harris Salam did some busking in Maple Street, spreading Christmas cheer with carols and collecting money for Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. For an hour and half of continuously playing in the rain, the boys, including Connor’s little brother Fynn, were motivated by knowing that they would be making Christmas more cheerful for those in need.

The Friends of Cahill’s Scrub enjoyed an early Christmas Celebration lunch at Vianta in Beerwah on Saturday, November 11. The group has had a busy year involving the removal of many tonnes of lantana and other weeds, the planting of over 1000 trees, and the ‘Pink Underwing Moth’ project on the Cahill’s Scrub Rainforest Reserve at Peachester.

This was momentous for the town's first Christmas party given the rainy night it was. Kids were bright eyed when Santa arrived in the fire truck and the hall was filled with energy, with people singing all of their Christmas favourites. In theGarden ... now I’ve really got shed envy!
Down on the ranch (our acre and a quarter), to the left of us is big shed, to the right of us is an even bigger shed and to the rear is what looks like a 747 hangar. At our place, I’ve got a standard 3m x 6m garden shed... that’s it – no garage (it’s a carport), no potting shed, no chook shed, no lean-to... nothing. This means that tools, spare furniture, paints, bits of timber, old doors, fishing and gardening gear, and 50-odd years of accumulated stuff is all jammed in. No room for a mower, no room for the barrow, and definitely no room for anything resembling a ‘man-cave’. Now, the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild has just added to my shed torment as they tell us they are building a new timber storage shed at the Montville Sports Ground. And not just any old ‘storage shed’... it’s an ex Vietnam War army shed, no less. But more on that later. With the increasing popularity of woodcrafting on the Range, the ‘Woodies’ have grown and need more facilities. Plus their horizontal bandmill has been so popular with locals donating trees to be milled, that the Woodies have been in desperate need for a larger facility to house the saw and store all the beautifully milled slabs and timber. Club President John Muller explained that the project to erect a new shed has been two and a half years in the making and has been helped along by two contributors, and most unlikely partners.

President John Muller, Brian Harris, Don Lear, Colin Sanderson, Tom Black, Ron Fishwick and Russ Middlecoat outside the shed “Firstly the Woodies received grants from the Sunshine Coast Council which have ensured the financial viability of the project,” said John. “These grants allowed the construction of the slab, electrical and other associated costs. This support from the Council has been exceptional and demonstrates the strong links the Council has to community groups such as the Woodies.” The second contributor was the Australian Army. During the 1960s Vietnam War years, the army had prefabricated large sheds which could be packed and shipped into the war zone. The leftover unused sheds have been sitting in storage boxes at the army stores depot in Wallangarra on the Queensland-New South Wales border. “These sheds were designed for erection in the jungles of Vietnam, obviously under difficult conditions, so every component had to fit and could be built with a few hand tools,” said John. “Some of these sheds were sold at auction, but most were gifted to community groups such as Men's Sheds all over Australia.” The Woodies were fortunate in receiving one, which measured 25.4m x 7.6m, ideal for what they needed. John said it was decided that the members of the Guild would erect the shed... how hard could it be? “It was amazing how well the boxes were packed, the contents condition still excellent after some 40+ years, as well as the descriptive instruction supplied with it,” John said. “Finding members to do the erection was not difficult. It shows the amazing talent one can find in organisations like the Woodies; ex project managers, builders, engineers, so the shed will soon be completed. “It will be a marvellous asset for the club and show the wonderful spirit found in community groups like the Woodies.” Thanks John... now I’m about to go home to squeeze into my cubby house and maybe have a little cry. At least I have a good excuse for not spending a day a weekend mowing the yard (Alex, keep up the good work).

As with many natural subjects, much patience is required of the photographer. Observation and knowledge of the subject matter is the key. Butterflies are always on the move, never settling for long. Mary used a 90mm 2.8 macro lens, ISO 800 at 1/2000 f2.8, manual with continuous shutter speed. The overcast conditions proved helpful. The Butterfly House is open to the public on Wednesdays and weekends.

Sport Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes It was great over the past few weeks, kids from Glass House Mountains Primary School in 4A and 4B were able to come and have a go at lawn bowls at our club. They all loved it but unfortunately the rain did wash us out some weeks. We hope to have more children back here from the local schools next year. Thanks to all members who offered their time to help. Myself, Chris Dougan and Jimmy Tatum were lucky enough to visit the kids at school to hand out medals to some of them. Some great potential future bowlers!
Year 4 students from Glasshouse Primary school Wednesday, December 13: our end of year Christmas Party was celebrated with two games of Scroungers with 26 players along and seven extra for lunch. Rob Scullion and Maz Idle came first and made off with a ham each. The consolation prize went to Rae Farrell for lucky last! Lunch had lots of laughs along with exchanging gifts and prizes for the Christmas raffle. All went well. Unfortunately President Sue was unable to attend so Vice President Jan presided. Business Bowls has finished for the year with the summer season kicking of January 31, with spots filling up quickly. The winners over the eight weeks were the team from Twin Cedar’s, Geoffrey Dean, Brian Saunders and Simon Richter, well done. Runners up were the Leftovers team of Kerri Hazeltine, Paul Chirgwin and David Hayes. Thanks to Terry and Liz Little and Bill Tumbridge for all their efforts to run this great competition. Thursday, December 14: Social, winners of the day Jenny Hobson and Di Garland with 2 wins + with a margin of 19. Runners up with + 9 in the second game were John Seghers and Warren Blackbourne. Lucky draw went to Chloe Runge and Jack Chirgwin who our president Jimmy Tatum said played some beautiful bowls. Good luck to both of you at the Under 15 State Championships at Bunderberg in January. Also thanks to John and Noelene Annakin who donated four meat vouchers for raffles. Reminder for those playing Premier 7’s the teams are done and the 1st round is Saturday January 6 away for both Division 3 and 4, there is still no draw for the Hinterland as yet. For all members, it is now official, Glasshouse Country Bowls Club will remain part of the Caboolture District and become part of the new District once it is formed, Moreton Bay. This brings our year to an end. On behalf of the management committee we hope everyone has a enjoyable and safe Christmas and we will see you all back here sometime in 2018 for what is going to be a very busy year of bowls. Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Baker Play on lawn 2 will resume this week however lawn 1 might take a bit more time to grass over sufficiently. The grass will still be a bit long because we are lowering the mower blades incrementally. This puts less pressure on the mower and reduces the likelihood of collecting sand. Both lawns are looking beautiful. The club has enjoyed a good year with generally agreeable weather for our tournaments and pleasant company on and off the field. Condolences and hopes for the future go to those who have suffered loss, distress or injury in their personal lives. Thanks to all who have helped in making ours a good club. That includes every single member and many outside the club as well. Best wishes now and in the New Year. Club play days are, in summer, Thursday and Sunday at 2 for 2.30pm. Lessons for Beginners to Advanced
Tamara competes in Adelaide Tamara Taripo, a Year 7 Student from Beerwah State High School, recently competed at the 10th Pacific School Games held in Adelaide. Over 4,000 athletes aged 10-19, from 15 countries, participated in 11 sports over the week. Tamara was invited to compete in her chosen events of shot put and discus after winning two silver medals at the State Titles last September. At the games she had a very successful competition, picking up a bronze medal in shot put with a throw of 11.5m and a silver medal in discus with a throw of 38.49m. Tamara will now enjoy a well-earned rest before the Little Athletics season continues next year. She hopes to one day represent Australia at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
