While it will be good for the kids, these days during COVID-19 times bike riding has become a super popular recreation activity, so if that trend continues these new pathways will arrive in the nick of time! New pathways to connect Beerburrum to Landsborough In a move that will be well received by locals and tourists alike, Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey recently announced $6.5 million in funding for a new biking and walking trail corridor from Beerburrum to Landsborough. Mr Bailey said the funding had been locked in and would be delivered as part of Queensland’s broader COVID-19 recovery response. “It has never been more important to create jobs and support the Sunshine Coast community as part of Queensland’s plan for economic recovery,” Mr Bailey said. “This is a project that will have benefits for local residents, school students and tourism operators by providing a safe, active transport route between hinterland communities and away from busy major roads.” The $6.5 million funding will be used to plan the 20km of trail linking Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah and Landsborough, as well as construct the first stage linking Glass House and Beerwah.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell described the announcement as “awesome news” for hinterland communities. “For years I’ve been asking both state and local governments to invest in this vital link but kept getting told there wasn’t the need, or the funding, or wait for the rail duplication,” Mr Powell said. “So I’m thrilled the funding has been found and the trail will finally go ahead.” Sunshine Coast Council Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski said an integrated active transport network was something he had been advocating for and that many kilometres of new pathways had been constructed since he came to council. “In terms of state funding announcements, it’s been a fantastic week for Glasshouse Country and I’m so pleased that all of our previous advocacy to Minister Bailey to consider delivering an active transport network between our townships has been considered,” Cr Baberowski said. “This state commitment will substantially extend and complement

the roughly 21km of local pathways already delivered in Division 1.” Brent Hampstead, the Labor candidate for Glass House in the upcoming state election, said that back in 2014 the two hot local issues for locals were the Reed Street intersection in Glass House and a pedestrian and bike path from Glass House Mountains to Beerwah. “Community consultation will start soon and I can’t wait to hear people’s ideas on how we can share our beautiful views of the Glass House Mountains with more people,” Mr Hampstead said. Labor candidate for Caloundra Jason Hunt said that the trail would be a drawcard for visitors to the area. “The purpose-built bike and walking trail from Beerburrum to Landsborough will be a stand-alone tourist attraction, winding past the Glass House Mountains and local cafes, shops and accommodation,” Mr Hunt said. “This magnificent new trail will attract people into the CBDs of all the towns along the route, which is good for locals and local businesses.”

Locals responded enthusiastically to the announcement via the GC&M News Facebook page, with more than 100 comments. Janelle Hooper posted: “Fantastic ... much safer than the roads around here”. Many praised the benefits it will bring. George Vartell said: “Great news for the cycling and hiking community along this corridor”. This was echoed by Michele Tipper: “Bout time! Finally the hinterland can get some much needed pathways over the coastline that already has them!” With the coast normally getting the attention, Krys Panini was happy something was coming the hinterland’s way for a change. “Thank you thank you thank you! I love living out here but I’m definitely noticing how much more isolated it is raising second bub out here, compared to raising first bub when we lived on the coast.” As more announcements are made and the community consultation process begins, you’ll be able to keep up to date via the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News Facebook page and fortnightly printed newspaper.

New community meeting space for Beerwah The state government recently announced funding for local projects as part of its $50 million Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package focussing on job creation projects, which will see $8.81 million allocated to 18 projects across the Sunshine Coast and Noosa council areas. Four of these projects will be on the Sunshine Coast, including $1.65 million to develop a new Beerwah community meeting place, which will adjoin the Beerwah Library building facing Peachester Road and the wetlands. Cr Rick Baberowski said that for years Division 1 residents had been calling for extra meeting space that could be used by residents from across the Glasshouse Country townships. “The building and outdoor facilities complement recent improvements to Turner Park and the Beerwah entry statements, and will help transform this space into a precinct the whole district can enjoy,” Cr Baberowski said.

“The building configuration will allow for multiple layout possibilities, ranging from one large communal space to five smaller meeting spaces, through

the use of sliding partitions and glazed

screens,” Cr Baberowski said. Construction is expected to start in late 2020, depending on weather and site conditions.

Beerburrum quarry hearing starts

After three and a half years of uncertainty, the Beerburrum community will soon know if the small town will have 200 trucks per day rumbling down its main street. A ten-day Planning and Environment Court hearing started this week on Monday, August 17, and will hear experts on both sides – those for the quarry and the Barro Group, who are the development proponents, and those against the quarry, including Sunshine Coast Council representing the interests of the local community. Judge Michael Williamson will preside over the hearing and have the final say as to the fate of the quarry proposal. In 2017 the quarry application stirred a groundswell of opposition from local residents who formed the Beerburrum Action Group. While the application was being considered by the council planning assessment unit, the group campaigned against the need for the quarry and highlighted the impacts that the quarry and quarry trucks

would have on their quiet village. Consequently, the application was refused (five votes to one) by the council after Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski raised it at a council meeting to be debated and decided. This rejection was contrary to the recommendation for approval by council staff. In mid-2019 the Barro Group lodged an appeal to the Planning and Environment Court, where, after more than a year, the matter has now come to a head. Members of the Beerburrum Action Group will attend the court hearing to show support for council’s anti-quarry stance. After the hearing concludes, the judge will most likely take a considerable amount of time to assess the evidence and form a judgement. Boost to mobile coverage in Glass House Mountains A new mobile base station was switched on at 8 Woodrows Road earlier this month giving residents and visitors to Glass House Mountains significantly improved phone service – especially in the area west of Old Gympie Road. Telstra won the competitive tender, which is part of the federal government’s Mobile Black Spot Program providing 4GX coverage to its customers. Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace was pleased to share the news, saying it will help the community to stay connected. “It has been a long road to get here but this is great news for the community,” he said. “The lack of mobile phone reception in parts of the hinterland continues to be one of the most common issues raised with me by local residents and this has become more serious during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Mr Wallace said his understanding was that other providers could make a deal with Telstra to piggyback on their infrastructure and provide better service to their customers. Customers of other

providers should contact their service providers and ask if they intend to make a commercial agreement with Telstra. Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts Mr Paul Fletcher said switching on the new base station in Glass House Mountains under the Black Spot Program reflected the federal government’s commitment to further improving connectivity in the regions. Minister for Regional Communications, Regional Health and Local Government Mr Mark Coulton echoed the importance of improved coverage, saying that through the Mobile Black Spot Program more than 40,000 triple 0 calls had been made. As part of Telstra’s ongoing involvement in the program, coverage for residents and visitors across 11 other sites in the broader Sunshine Coast region has been significantly improved, including in Mapleton, Conondale and Peachester. Bushfire season 2020

Preparing for bushfire season 2020 The cover story in our last edition provided some great local advice to highlight awareness of the impending Queensland bushfire season, with community members urged to prepare, act and survive. In this edition, we continue the theme of raising awareness by introducing a series of tips, practical advice and commentary to assist readers to be

better prepared for this year’s bushfire season. We will continue to focus on important topics in the coming editions. This week Matt Inwood, of the Caloundra Rural Fire Service and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services area director, has provided some practical tips about finalising preparations for your home.

Matt said the first point of call was to ensure residents had a Bushfire Survival Matt Inwood Plan well in place from QFES before a bushfire strikes. With preparation the key to survival, Matt strongly suggests people prioritise property preparation ahead of time. He also advises having discussions with family members and others living on the property about how they will act in the event of fire, as everyone deals very differently with the threat of fire. He said there were some excellent online resources available through the Rural Fire Service with clear step-bystep guides for preparation, important triggers for discussion, risk analysis and, importantly, a template to create a personalised Bushfire Survival Plan that should be referred to when finalising preparations for your home. Matt said some key tips for property preparation include: 1. Ensure vegetation is kept clear from the house and structures.

2. Gutters must be kept clean. 3. If you have wood heaters or an open fire, ensure your timber piles are a good distance from the house. 4. If you have a rural pump with access to water, make sure the pump is working well. 5. If using hoses, make sure the hose extends to the extremities of the building. 6. Ensure there is good access into your property so firefighters can get in. 7. Make sure your property can be identified and is clearly numbered. 8. Always know the name of the nearest cross street for reporting purposes. Matt said local brigades in the area had been focussing on hazard reduction burns and increased community engagement as part of this year’s Operation Cool Burn bushfire mitigation strategies. “Our local brigades and firefighters are well prepared to help protect our community and are at a heightened level of alert ahead of this year’s bushfire season,” Matt said. Didn’t vote at the council election? There might be a fine heading your way The local government election held last March during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic response saw a low voter turnout compared to previous elections. Almost a quarter of voters didn’t vote in the local Divisions 1 and 5 of the Sunshine Coast Council. In Division 1 (won by Rick Baberowski) 16,651 votes were cast from a total electoral role of 21,421, meaning that 22% of possible electors didn’t vote. In Division 5 (won by Winston Johnston) 18,007 voters turned up from a total enrolment of 23,655 - a non-voting figure of 23%. By comparison, in the 2016 council elections the non-voting figure was 16% in both divisions. As voting is compulsory, the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) has announced that although non-voters will be dealt with under the existing regulations, a conciliatory approach would be taken. Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen said the elections were delivered under challenging circumstances and many

electors who wanted to vote may not have voted due to a heightened anxiety about COVID-19. “While voting is compulsory, we understand the extraordinary circumstances around the March elections and have tailored our response to non-voters accordingly,” Mr Vidgen said. He said the election data showed that around 270,000 Queensland electors were first time non-voters and these non-voters would not be fined. However, this was not the case for repeat non-voters. “In the coming weeks around 30,000 electors will receive a warning letter because they have missed voting in more than one election, including March, and have not provided an excuse or responded to the ECQ,” Mr Vidgen said. “The approximately 20,000 electors who are repeat non-voters across multiple elections and have made no effort to engage with the ECQ, will be sent an ‘apparent failure to vote’ notice and be invited to explain their reason for not voting.

“If they are unable to provide a valid reason or do not engage with the ECQ, they will receive a fine.” Mr Vidgen said preparations were well advanced to deliver a COVID-Safe state general election in October. “The ECQ is using all the lessons from March to ensure a safe and fair general election in October,” he said. “This means voters will be provided with every opportunity to vote while accommodating health requirements.

“We urge electors to plan for the election, to choose whether they’ll postal vote, vote early or on election day, and be clear about their choice of candidate and their order of preferences. “However, we remind electors that voting is compulsory and with expanded voting options for the October state general election, concerns over COVID-19 won’t be considered a valid reason for not voting.”

Business News Outstanding service with a smile Hotel Maleny’s senior food and beverage staff member Sherri Dan has been nominated by her manager Jo Veniamakis for a Rotary Club of Maleny Pride of Workmanship Award. Jo wanted to acknowledge the outstanding dedication that Sherri had shown to not only her place of work but to Maleny and its community, through her tireless enthusiasm and willingness to adapt to whatever needed to be done, especially during the challenges of COVID-19. Jo said Sherri had been an incredible all-rounder who demonstrated her capability within an ever-changing workplace environment. “She went above and beyond for customers and was often out there on the frontline delivering meals to locals,” Jo said. “She put up her hand to whatever needed doing to ensure continuity of service and nothing was a problem – she did everything with a smile.” Even during the doom and gloom of recent months, Sherri always had the biggest smile on her face no matter what she was asked to do, from helping out with stocktake, to washing dishes, making pizza or assisting with the hotel accommodation.

“Since being employed at Hotel Maleny in 2017, Sherri has been a wonderful asset to all aspects of the business and the greater community,” Jo said. “During the uncertainty around COVID-19 Sherri would often personally help community members negatively affected with particular care. For the past 11 years I have been an active member of the chamber’s executive, seven years as treasurer and four years as president. It hasn’t always been a smooth run. We have had some ups and downs but somehow we got through them and moved on. The idea of a chamber of commerce, as I understand it, is to bring together businesses for the betterment of all, which in itself is noteworthy as it takes away competition and rivalry and concentrates on the best outcome for everybody. How many times are we stuck behind Glasshouse Country Chamber our shop or workshop doors, grappling col and when we withPresident some problems mention it to someone, the solution appears out of nowhere? Networking and attending business events are only productive when people

actually attend and actively take part. We are all busy and time is valuable but if time is spent to further your business or your idea, to form partnerships or simply to see what the others are doing, then I believe this time is well spent. We are located in a fabulous area, close to everything but still tucked away from the big smoke. Our lifestyle is the envy of a lot of people but we have to be vigilant that we can keep it. At the same time we cannot miss out on opportunities and innovations that will allow us to prosper. It is a balancing act that requires cooperation from governments, both local and state, as well as the local business community. I believe that we are on a good path and that our future looks promising as long as we don’t lose our core values. I could go on and on with this topic and talk about innovations, entrepreneurship and mindset but this is not the time or place to do so. With that said, I thank our executive for the past year of commitment and their time dedicated to the chamber. We have achieved quite a lot but there is a lot more to be done and I wish the new executive all the very best.

Lizzie Vaughan Loving living and working in Landsborough By Sonia Clark GC&M News featured a story about the five-year milestone of All About Autism (August 4 edition), the childhood educational support service in Landsborough. After chatting with Lizzie Vaughan for the story we wanted to find out more about the Landsborough local behind this unique service. Originally from the UK, Lizzie said she and her husband Andrew (an auxiliary firefighter with Beerwah Fire Station) fell in love with the Sunshine Coast after visiting on many holidays and spending time here during a gap year. Emigrating in 2013, they went on to build a beautiful home in Landsborough. Lizzie says she has absolutely loved being part of the local community. “Coming here from the UK we knew that we would be able to have a better lifestyle and wanted to raise our children as Queenslanders, enjoying all that the coast has to offer. We feel very fortunate to be able to both live and work in the local communities that we love,” Lizzie said. She was first inspired to work with

children with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) during her university studies as a psychology student, when she volunteered to support a child with severe non-verbal autism. “I saw an advert to volunteer to support a child developmentally by providing an in-home program. I worked with him for two years and witnessed an amazing change in him,” Lizzie said. “I was able to experience a totally different way of teaching, which supported the individual and celebrated each small success. This experience made me realise this was what I wanted to do more of professionally.” After gaining her teaching degree, Lizzie went on to teach in a mainstream school, a special school and an early intervention service when she and Andrew first moved to the coast. In 2014, she completed a Masters in Autism (children) and has since dedicated her career to supporting “amazing individuals” by setting up All About Autism in 2015 to provide a service for the many children on the spectrum who needed

something more to help them flourish. Community News Local finalist in national awards Beerwah-based non-fiction ghost writer Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane has been named as a finalist for the 2020 AusMumpreneur Awards in the people’s choice voting category Making a Difference (Business). The awards are presented by the Women’s Business School to celebrate and recognise Australian mums in business achieving outstanding success and are designed to recognise the growing number of women who successfully balance motherhood and business in a way that suits their life and family. It has been an interesting year for mumpreneurs around the nation with economic challenges as well as adapting to running businesses in the new COVID-19 realm. “Juggling home schooling and running a business for five weeks earlier this year was incredibly challenging, but my kids and I are still friends, so I count that as a success,” Roxanne said. “One thing that has been an interesting outcome is that people are now reflecting more than ever on the things that truly matter to them. The result is I have seen a huge increase in the number of people wanting to become

authors. “People are realising the importance of creating their legacy and providing a way for people to connect with their knowledge or incredible lived experiences. Books are a great tool for that,” she said. In March, GC&M News reported that Roxanne was also a finalist in the Australian Small Business Champion Awards in the Sole Operator category. The winners have not yet been announced as the gala awards event was postponed for a second time but will hopefully be held in Sydney on November 29. Acknowledgement for work of international significance By Sonia Clark Local author Mary Garden’s biography ‘Sundowner of the Skies’ has been shortlisted in the 2020 NSW Premier’s History Awards. The compelling and deeply personal biography of her father, pioneering aviator Oscar Garden, is one of just three books shortlisted in the general history award category, which recognises a major work of non-fiction on international history that is of national or international significance. The author was beside herself with excitement and disbelief about her shortlist status. Mary said it was a shock to discover that her book had been shortlisted. “When I first received the email announcement, I thought it must certainly be a hoax,” Mary said. “I’m really just an unknown nobody in the literary world, not even a full-time author, so to be shortlisted is honestly one of the best things that has ever happened to me.” Mary entered the awards a while back on the off chance that she might get onto a long list. Not hearing back, she

just assumed that the awards had been and gone, and even doubted herself for entering such a distinguished competition. She said that when she was told about her selection she had never been so excited. The awards are judged by a high calibre independent panel of historians, academics and other sector professionals. The judges’ comments described Mary’s book as a powerful biography that was beautifully written and eloquently evocative. This year there were 139 entries across the five prize categories with the winners to be announced on September 4.

High hopes for wedding partnership By Sonia Clark Conondale Hall Committee members are excited about their collaboration with Sunshine Coast wedding planner Rachel Okuma, which will see the hall showcased as a unique and appealing wedding venue. Committee member Lois White said the members were thrilled that Rachel, from Weddings With You + Me, was getting the word out about their muchloved community hall and promoting it as a charming wedding venue. As well as rejuvenating interest in the hall the newly established business will give a boost to local suppliers. “It’s been so nice to work with Rachel who is just as keen as we are to see local people benefit from the hall’s increased use,” Lois said. “Not only will it bring people to our venue but the

Big plans for new community hub By Sonia Clark Champion of the hinterland region, Celebrate Glasshouse Country, has recently relocated its offices to the Beerwah Sportsground. The community organisation is now based in the building next to the skate park. Committee members are excited to be able to utilise a new expansive space that includes an outdoor area, three offices, toilets, a kitchen and even a boardroom. President Judy Tomlinson said that they had decided to call their new space The Hub. The group is already energised and excited with some big plans being discussed for the new space. “Thanks to all the great facilities in and around the sportsground, and the

support of the onsite managers and committee, we are happily planning to bring community members in to make this space their own,” Judy said. “We have already approached the PCYC to see if they may be able to run youth activities in the sportsground using our office as a base, and we are looking into options to possibly run a monthly Sunday market that would complement the area’s existing markets. “We are also planning regular workshops to support other community volunteers in the region and a weekly morning tea so volunteers can join in for a chat, welcome new residents and share information about what is happening in the area.”

Drive-in concert gamble delivered

While the Maleny Garden Club could not organise its annual Gardening on the Edge weekend event this year, the members are busy planning for the Maleny Spring Fair to be held on October 3 in the Maleny Showground’s main pavilion and exhibition hall from 8.30am–4pm. The one-day event will be a great opportunity for avid gardeners to attend practical workshops and listen to guest speakers as well as purchase local plants and produce, including plants from specialty nurseries. The Maleny Arts and Craft group will be there to provide further interest and support the various things planned for the day. Everyone enjoys a Devonshire tea so the catering group will provide fresh scones, yummy cakes, tasty sandwiches, tea, coffee and bottled water. Maleny Garden Club president Bill

The Maleny Rotary Club took a step into unfamiliar territory by organising the Winter Blues Drive-In Concert at the Maleny Showgrounds in July. However, the event proved to be a risk worth taking. Club president Greg Williams said he was delighted with the success of the evening as a result of the efforts and contributions of the many people and local businesses involved. “Club member Melinda Martin organised support from local businesses by way of sponsorship from gold sponsor Maleny IGA, a long term supporter of the club, silver sponsors Mitre 10, Pestworx and Anderson’s Plumbing, and a gratifying number of other sponsors,” Greg said. “Club members, led by Paulette Steele, put in many long hours of work in the organisation and running of the event with the assistance of the artists, technicians and others to ensure the great result.” Greg said that because of the COVID-19 restrictions usual fundraising opportunities had been heavily curtailed and members realised they had to do something to maintain a reasonable level of direct financial support for the local community over the next year. “Aside from hoping to raise funds, the club was anxious to help not only

Places & faces Insights from a neighbourhood centre volunteer Karen Kemp has been a volunteer at Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre for more than five years and has absolutely loved the experience. Karen has been a resident of the area for more than 30 years. She and her late husband Robert ran a small farm for many years selling produce including avocados and custard apples. “During that time I would often read about things happening locally in the community and think the event or idea sounded nice but never really got involved,” Karen said. “Since becoming a volunteer, I’ve really opened my eyes to what’s going on in the community.” Karen became a volunteer for several reasons, including wanting to look for other interests following some major life changes. Initially she got involved after seeing an advertisement looking for volunteers. She went along to an interview and has been on board ever since. She really enjoys dealing with other members of her community and has also found that through her volunteer involvement she is now much more

actively engaged and aware of what is going on in her local community. When Karen first started, she felt the neighbourhood centre was not that well known in the local community. She said she was very pleased to see how much it had evolved into a bustling community hub over the past five years. “When I started there was less than a handful of volunteers, which has greatly increased in the past few years,” Karen said. “It’s been great to see the centre grow as more people have become involved and I feel we have great direction. “The centre’s taken a more active part in the community locally and throughout the hinterland, and its role has become much more prominent. “We regularly do events, community barbeques, workshops and provide emergency relief. Events such as our Christmas barbeque last year had around 180 people turn up, which was just wonderful,” Karen said. As the centre transitions back to a new normal she hopes to volunteer at least a couple of days a week.

On a personal level Karen said that although it was a wellworn cliché, she really did get an incredible amount of satisfaction by giving back to the community. “Everything we do, from buttering the bread for our barbeque, to helping put together a grant application, is for the benefit of our community. I feel so much more connected now to what’s going on in the Glass House Mountains region, and the spirit and energy at the centre is wonderful. It’s nice to give your time to be part of something bigger that benefits everyone,” she said. Karen said everyone at the centre was always happy to chat to people who wanted to get involved and people could volunteer as little or as much time as they liked. Maleny Library gets a refurbishment Sunshine Coast Council staff and library volunteers came together recently to celebrate the Maleny Library’s contemporary and vibrant new look after it was refurbished during the COVID-19 closure. Division 5 councillor Winston Johnston said Maleny Library now had more attractive and diverse spaces for people to enjoy while reading their favourite book or researching their latest assignment. “It’s wonderful to see Maleny Library looking so fresh. The library is an integral part of our local community,” Cr Johnston said. “The refreshed library celebrates our local landscape and hinterland lifestyle through the colour scheme and eye-catching images of local

landmarks – the design truly brings the space to life. “Other features include new carpet, shelving, signage and furniture and paint throughout, with more spaces to BYO devices or be immersed in a good book. “The new layout is designed to maximise space, functionality and flow throughout the library, while drawing people in and encouraging them to explore the collections.” If you haven’t been to the library since it reopened, why not pop in and take a look? Jason Hunt Labor Candidate for Caloundra Recovery from the economic effects of COVID-19 looks like becoming a moving experience for the Caloundra electorate including Beerwah, Landsborough and Glenview. Moving forward that is. More tourists will be able to move in for holiday stays, and locals will be able to move around more safely, and both can stay fit while they take in our unique atmosphere and Glass House Mountains views. The Palaszczuk Government has already started road upgrades associated with its Unite and Recover Initiative and has partnered with Australia Zoo to build new tourist facilities adjacent to the Zoo. They will now build a 20km trail for bike riders and walkers. The $6.5 million purpose-built bike and walking trail from Beerburrum to Landsborough will be a stand-alone tourist attraction, winding past the Glass House Mountains and local cafes, shops and accommodation. And it’s not the only project benefiting locals. There’s $18 million for safety upgrades to Steve Irwin Way. 18

Then there’s the $5.5 million intersection upgrade at Beerwah State School - a fantastic safety initiative for the School and commuters. And there’s $1.6 million to create the Beerwah Community Meeting Place which includes indoor and outdoor meeting places. Down the road, the widening of the Bruce Highway from the Steve Irwin Way to Caboolture will turn this 11km stretch of highway from four to six lanes. These projects will bring more visitors to our community — and support for local businesses. They also bring local jobs to help us unite and recover from COVID-19. And there are more improvements on the drawing board for the Caloundra electorate that I will be working hard to bring forward in the future. Some are in partnership with the Federal Government, others with Sunshine Coast Council. Only by all levels of Government working together can we really build better communities. Here in Beerwah and Landsborough, residents deserve good roads and community facilities. Our small businesses deserve the support our

State Government is giving them. We all deserve first-class health facilities like the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. And we deserve to feel safe — and be safe — during COVID-19. That’s something we can thank Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk for. She has put Queenslanders’ health first. Our kids deserve a quality education at

our local schools. And they deserve to have access to training opportunities and meaningful jobs, right here on the Sunshine Coast. Our children shouldn’t have to leave the Coast to get a decent job. I want to build a better community where families can thrive and enjoy our great quality of life – just like my family. I want to get things done.

Maleny Players back on stage The Maleny Players are excited to be performing again in their upcoming production of ‘Radio Times’, at 1.30pm and 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday on the weekends of September 19-20 and September 26-27. The humorous and nostalgic trip back in time to the golden age of radio can be performed because it satisfies all the current social distancing requirements as the actors can remain separated on stage. The performers play actors broadcasting from a Brisbane radio station in 1954. They first present ‘The Maroochy Flyer’ by Errol Morrison, which provides a fanciful retelling of a true event when a plane landed on a beach, and ‘Quiet Flows the Obi Obi’, a satirical take on Maleny’s past, present and future. As the show progresses they broadcast further items including a parody of the famous serial ‘Blue Hills’. Things begin to go haywire in the studio and it seems everyone may soon be out of a job. Stringent distancing requirements will apply to the audience as well as the actors, reducing the allowed number of people attending to 20 per performance. However, the production itself will provide a respite from present worries, taking the audience back to a more innocent era.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will deliver the project in two stages, with construction of Stage 1 to provide some immediate community benefits while investigating funding options for Stage 2. The Australian and Queensland governments have committed $550.8 million towards Stage 1 of the B2N project, with $390 million of Australian Government funding and $160.8 million of Queensland Government funding. TMR has started the tender process for Stage 1 and is on track to begin early works in early 2021. Proposals are being sought from the construction industry to work with TMR to finalise the detailed design and commence major construction in mid-2022.

Hinterland Back story

Taking a look at the history of the Landsborough Museum building As part of our local history exploration, we thought we’d shine a light on the stories behind some of our historic local buildings. Many readers driving though Landsborough would be familiar with the museum building, but did you know this building originally housed the council chambers for the area, known back then as the Landsborough Shire Council? In December 1923, under the direction of John Tytherleigh (first chairman of Landsborough Shire), the Landsborough Shire Council invited tenders to construct its new shire council chambers. Using plans by renowned Brisbane architect Walter Cary Voller, by January 1924 the contract to build the chambers was awarded to Mr A E Round based on his tender of £824, with the condition that he complete the entire project within three months. Locally sourced native hardwood timbers, including hoop and bunya pine, were used in construction. With little ceremony on July 14, 1924 shire chairman Cr John Grigor officially declared the new chambers open for business. Over the following 44 years important documents for the shire were kept in the building’s strong room, and the people and the history of the Landsborough Shire passed through the chamber’s doors. By the 1950s changes were made to accommodate the growing staff numbers and the growth of the shire in general, with five additional offices constructed

on the railway side of the building and the extension and enclosure of the front verandah. By 1968 the council had relocated to its new chambers in Caloundra and the old Landsborough office was primarily used for storing records until July 14, 1971 when the retiring shire clerk Mr E B Roberts locked the old shire chambers for the last time. An exciting new era began for the old chambers when the Landsborough Historical Society opened the museum on April 3, 1976.

The Landsborough Shire Council became the Caloundra City Council on December 19, 1987 and in 1997 an application was made to have the former shire chamber building heritage listed. The application was successful and at a Heritage Council meeting on June 25, 1999 it was resolved to enter the former Landsborough Shire Council chambers into the Queensland Heritage Register.

Ferals take heed … council is on your case Dealing with serious weed and feral animal issues is an important core function for local government in the ongoing battle to protect agricultural production, environmental values and our general way of life. Declared pests such as salvinia, giant rat’s tail grass, groundsel bush, fireweed, foxes, wild dogs, feral pigs, feral deer and rabbits all pose serious threats across our landscapes. Sunshine Coast Council reconfirmed its commitment to combating invasive species when it endorsed its inspection and surveillance programs at last week’s ordinary general meeting. Environment portfolio councillor Peter Cox said that it must be a shared effort. “Controlling invasive species is challenging and requires a combined effort, which is why we are working with our community and industry to manage invasive species in our region,” Cr Cox said. “Council leads the charge in combatting pest plants and also provides advice to residents on how to manage these plants on their properties.” Council’s surveillance program is a vital tool in keeping an eye on pests invading the Sunshine Coast. According to figures from the council, previous pest survey programs show that 54% of all properties checked had declared invasive species present and 12% of properties were not being managed to meet their biosecurity obligations in respect to pest plants and animals. The surveillance program applies to all properties over

4,000m2 in size and will be concentrating on the localities of Balmoral Ridge, Diamond Valley, Beerwah, Mount Mellum, Bells Creek, Crohamhurst, North Maleny, Flaxton, Dulong, Eerwah Vale, Verrierdale, Belli Park, Peachester, Montville, Obi Obi, Pacific Paradise and Mapleton. Almost 2,000 properties are inspected each year during the campaign. The surveillance campaign budget is $443,112, which includes 3.5 full-time equivalent staff positions and equipment, with one full-time staff ($84,358) being funded from the environment levy as well as $60,000 for community action and engagement, which includes educational materials and the free weed hire equipment that can be accessed by landholders. At the same ordinary meeting, the council also endorsed the feral animal prevention and control program for another 12 months. Costing $1,231,084, which includes environment levy funds of $358,136 and a community action and engagement component of $60,000, the program has nine full-time equivalent staff working directly to target specific feral animal species, namely wild dogs, feral pigs, feral goats, feral cats, feral deer, foxes and rabbits. The council offers assistance through training, advice and on-ground support to property owners and occupiers, which includes trapping and baiting programs. There are also several proactive education stalls that are provided by the council on feral animal management at community events throughout the year.

According to council figures, over the previous Fireweed year 61 feral cats, 55 feral pigs, 96 foxes, 29 pigeons, one domestic rabbit, 15 wild rabbits, 42 deer and 71 wild dogs were removed as part of the program. Environment portfolio councillor Maria Suarez said that dealing with feral animals was complex. “Council answers about 550 new requests for help with feral animal control each year, in addition to services continuing on a number of properties,” Cr Suarez said. “Working together to combat feral animals is key to success, which is why council officers work closely with landholders to provide education and assistance to minimise the impacts on their property, pets, livestock and agricultural crops.”

Hinterland Families Positive reading experiences for children at home

By Sonia Clark Conondale academic and teacher Tracey Sanderson has long been interested in encouraging a passion for reading, especially in young students. Tracey has more than 30 years’ experience as a primary school teacher. Over the years she has found that, although there was consistent evidence recognising the importance of positive reading experiences for children, as a teacher she often had to remind parents to engage a passion for reading with their children. This led her to wonder not only what support parents gave to encourage this passion but what parents thought would be useful to help them to support their children. This idea became the basis of Tracey’s PhD project that she is currently undertaking through the University of Southern Queensland, and one she hopes will lead to a useful resource for both parents and teachers. As part of her research, Tracey is inviting parents or carers of children (with at least one child aged between six and 11 years) to help her better understand what works for parents and what they find useful to encourage

Battle of the Bands is back! By Sonia Clark After several years on the backburner, Battle of the Bands is back! Three local high schools have entered into a bit of friendly competition to see who will take the crown in this year’s online event. Students from Beerwah State High School, Maleny State High School and Glasshouse Christian College will battle it out through online performances, with three bands competing from each school. Beerwah State High school chaplain Mike Turner said the idea to revive the competition had been around for a few years, with murmurs from students wanting the event to return gaining traction, so the decision was made for a 2020 showcase. Mike said he first met with the music teachers from each school in February and all were excited about the idea and keen to support it. “At the time, we had planned for a live event that has now evolved into an online competition, which will be run internally between the schools,” Mike said. “It was a great way to be able to create a space for the school community to come together and give the students

involved a creative focus, especially during the months of lockdown.” Mike said the bands were made up of students from various year levels performing a range of styles, though rock and pop were the main genres. In early September, the bands will film their performances and each school will be encouraged to take a student vote on the act they enjoyed the most. “We’re going to have a judging panel made up of teachers and a couple of

surprise special guests who will get together to view the performances and cast the final vote,” Mike said. Although the battle is a friendly competition, Mike said it was equally about encouraging student creativity, commonality and celebrating young local talent. Last Friday morning when I ducked into Beerwah to go to the bank, as I walked on the pedestrian crossing in Simpson Street I noticed that lovely public art pieces had been damaged, with one being entirely covered in plastic. While I don’t profess to always understand modern art, since the first time I saw these rather quirky little creatures back in 2014 I have admired them and they have brought a smile to my face when I see them. So to see that someone has vandalised them is just beyond me. Quarry court case

The appeal hearing by Barro Group starts in the Environmental Court on Monday, August 17. Sunshine Coast Council is defending its decision to reject the Beerburrum quarry application and its solicitors have been working very hard to prepare their case in support of their decision - and in support of the Beerburrum community. We can only hope that the court will rule in favour of council’s rejection of Barro Group’s application to send at least 140+ trucks per day through Beerburrum township, as well as expecting residents closest to the quarry site to tolerate blasting and crushing, heavy machinery noise and the resulting dust, all of this affecting not only homes in the area but also wildlife that exists in the area of the World Heritage listed Glass House Mountains National Park. Improving mobile reception The federal government has provided funding for four new mobile towers in the hinterland since 2017. Recently the second was switched on in Glass House Mountains. It has been a hard slog for Telstra to get planning approval for a location for this tower but now that it is complete and operating, it is going to make a significant difference to mobile reception west of Old Gympie Road. This adds to the boost already provided by the first federally funded tower near Peachester and will improve further when the next tower in Beerwah gets up and running. #SupportSunshineCoast This week Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce joined my #SupportSunshineCoast campaign at a local launch at Vianta Espresso & Wine Bar in Beerwah. Sadly, without interstate and international visitors this year, many businesses in the Sunshine Coast hinterland are doing it tough. True Hero grants The Mark McArdle True Hero grants funding program recognises outstanding individuals and community groups doing great things in Caloundra and the hinterland. These $250 grants have provided much needed assistance to many groups and young athletes who may not have otherwise qualified for larger government grants. This year we received applications to support very worthy causes, including youth sport, environmental projects, music, the arts, programs to support seniors and even a community garden. However, 2020 took a turn we certainly were not expecting. The grants program was placed on hold as COVID-19 restrictions impacted many organisations and events that had submitted grant applications. Understanding the stress and financial pressure this year has placed on our community, I have decided to approve all grant applications that were submitted on time. It is my hope that these grants, though they might be small, will provide a boost to some of our grassroots organisations who have done it tough this year, as well as keep young athletes on track to reach their goals. In the hinterland, I am pleased to announce the Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Club will receive a grant to help reopen their canteen, along with Jorjah and Deziah from Beerwah who will each receive a grant to support their track and field for a fourth year at state champion level. As we cannot take a group photo this year, the winners’ first names or organisations will be posted on my website and social media channels. Congratulations to all our winners.

Glassies voting After a successful Glassies nomination period it’s time to get voting! There have been 42 businesses nominated in Glass House, 18 in Maleny, 15 in Moreton Bay and 17 in Montville, as well as 17 employees in Glass House, four in Maleny, nine in Moreton Bay and four in Montville. Between now and Tuesday, September 8, you’ll be able to vote for one business and one employee from each region. The number of nominations a business or employee received doesn’t count towards the voting, so it’s important that you register your vote for your favourite business and/or employee during the voting period. Shadow minister visits Glass House Last week Glass House had a visit from the Shadow Minister for Environment and Tourism David Crisafulli. We headed up to the Glass House Mountains to catch up with local Judy Tomlinson, who was able to fill David in on the operations of Celebrate Glasshouse Country and her new business venture – Glasshouse Country Tours. Judy is offering guided tours around the iconic Glass House Mountains and to some of our fantastic local farms and cafes. The tours are sure to entertain and delight.

After catching up with Judy we drove up to Montville to meet with Otto Lechner and Shiralee Cooper from the Montville Chamber of Commerce. Otto showed David some of the verge clearing he’s done on the Maleny-Montville Road and expressed his hopes for the government to replicate his efforts on other key tourist routes in order to enhance the tourism experience on the range.

Council has been successful through the Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package to deliver a new district level community meeting place as an extension to the Beerwah Library. With the community calling for extra meeting space for years, it was great that we had this project in the pipeline ready to go. Investing in roads Congratulations to council staff and contractors who completed the first bitumen seal on the second and final stage of the McGilchrist Road upgrade (south of the Dales Road intersection) at Chevallum. The upgrade from a gravel road to a sealed road provides formalised traffic lanes and increased visibility for motorists. The upgrade will also reduce dust and maintenance costs. With the first stage (Ilkley Road to Banyan Road) completed in March 2019, I was pleased to recently visit the site to celebrate the works and personally acknowledge the staff who have delivered this project. McGilchrist Road is a key connection between Chevallum and Eudlo and I would like to thank my Division 5 predecessor Cr Jenny McKay for championing this important upgrade for many years. Now the sealing is almost complete, you will notice works beginning to improve the drainage structures (such as the pipes and culverts) along the road. Your patience and understanding during construction is appreciated and thank you for supporting council to deliver these vital infrastructure projects.

Women’s wellbeing workshop From little things big things can grow, and so an original idea for a smallscale parent’s night hatched earlier this year by a bunch of Landsborough Community Kindy mums has grown into a larger fundraising event open to all women in the wider community. Women of all ages are invited to a very special evening that celebrates self-care, community and women’s empowerment on Thursday, August 20 at 7pm at the Landsborough Memorial Hall. The event will include tasty gluten and dairy free vegan raw treats, gorgeous natural skincare and eco-friendly lucky door prizes, and an inspiring two-part selfcare workshop facilitated by guest speaker, Kate Manley (pictured), a certified health coach, author and kindy mum. Kate is excited to share her insights around the importance of self-care for women, as well as providing practical and useful guidance on how to achieve it. The night will be all about community connections and a chance for local women to come together to enjoy an evening of self-nourishment and empowerment, with all proceeds from the night donated back to Landsborough Community Kindy. Kate said so many things had changed this year in the way community kindergartens operated. Parents were

no longer able to stop and chat, and many traditional fundraising opportunities had to be cancelled. “We hope that this event will give the kindy a major fundraising boost while also providing a space for the community to come together, meet others and celebrate,” she said. Kate is a certified health coach with a degree in behavioural science (psychology). She spent more than a decade in corporate human resources and found her interest was focussed more towards nurturing employee wellbeing rather than corporate policy. During her pregnancy with daughter Piper, who now attends the Landsborough Kindy, Kate realised she wanted to pursue her passion to empower and work with women, especially around areas related to reducing stress and improving mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. “The workshop is about creating more time and space for busy mothers, women and carers, and how to maximise that time and space to get the most benefit,” Kate said. Woolworths stores at Beerwah and Maleny have partnered with Share the Dignity to support the growing number of Queensland women experiencing period poverty due to COVID-19. As part of their August Dignity Drive, Woolworths stores across the country will give customers the opportunity to donate sanitary items via collection boxes in store. Woolworths Beerwah and Woolworths Maleny group manager Tabitha Millar said community support and kindness was more important than ever. “We are incredibly proud to be partnering with Share the Dignity for the August Dignity Drive. We’re always amazed by the generosity of our customers and the support they show for our Dignity Drives. It’s this small act of kindness that goes such a long way in supporting vulnerable girls and women of our local area,” Tabitha said. Woolworths will also donate five cents from the sale of some sanitary products throughout August to Share the Dignity to help the charity fund more Dignity vending machines. The machines dispense free sanitary items to women experiencing homelessness,

fleeing domestic violence or facing difficult circumstances. Woolworths has partnered with Share the Dignity since 2019 and, in partnership with its customers, has raised more than $1.3 million for the charity, with funds to date used to install 80 Dignity vending machines across Australia.

Opening conversations around death and dying By Sonia Clark Tying Up Loose Ends (TULE) is a unique local group of like-minded women dedicated to improving community conversations around the traditionally tricky subject of death and dying. The group, formed earlier this year, aims to improve death literacy in our community by empowering, educating and cultivating change in the way society experiences death, dying and grieving. Coordinator Fleur Adamson said that one of the key aims of the group was to take away the fear and anxiety surrounding death by bringing it back into the community realm. “We want to offer genuine help and advice around the process of dying, and also gently and respectfully raise awareness of death. We would also like to educate and empower our community to know that there are choices that they can make,” Fleur said. The group of passionate and mindfully aware women are currently in discussions with local community spaces to facilitate a proposed pilot plan involving a series of community conversation starters. TULE hopes

these will gently open doors to discussions around death through humour, insight and awareness. Fleur said that as part of the proposed pilot plan, the group hoped to eventually host information gatherings at neighbourhood centres and schools throughout South East Queensland. These gatherings would explore topics such as end-of-life choices, preparation for the inevitable, cremation versus burial, and raise awareness of the role of death doulas, who can provide guidance at the end of life. They are also planning a series of educational and supportive humorous skits performed publicly and based around the tongue-in-cheek theme ‘Pushing up the daisies’. “Anxiety around death is very universal. We want to educate all members of our community, including school-aged children and baby boomers through to the aged, that death is a normal part of life. Family Tree Café will be a family favourite Fans of Landsborough’s 3 Divas Café may already be fans of the family who bought the café in March this year. During the COVID-19 lockdown they had time to think about what they would like to bring to locals and after a short closure, the Family Tree Café was born. The owners are sourcing local ingredients and making as much as possible in-house using time honoured family recipes including grandad’s meat patties and grandma’s tomato relish. Last week Tina and I headed along to grab lunch and we were spoiled for choice. Tina decided to go with the recommendation of a vege burger, which was pretty special. I couldn’t resist the bao buns and at $6 for one or

$10 for two, why wouldn’t you? The food was super quick to come out and everything, including the house-made vege pattie, was so fresh and tasty. We almost couldn’t fit in the Koko Twist coconut soft-serve, which is vegan, dairy free and sugar free (as well as delicious), but decided to do our job thoroughly. The coffee is fantastic and Tina confirmed that the turmeric latte was one of the best she has tasted. We’re already planning our order for our next visit - a beetroot latte paired with a piece of their local gourmet fudge or one of Turmeric latte their other sweet treats.

The centre is back to opening at its usual times on Mondays and Fridays from 9.30am-1pm, and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am-4pm. In the Garden A sure sign of spring It’s midAugust. In our Euro-centric mind space, technically it’s still winter … at least until the end of the month. However, nature doesn’t follow a Gregorian calendar … or a Julian or Hindu or Hebrew or Islamic or Mayan calendar or not even the Hanke-Henry Permanent Calendar. Nature does what she wants when she wants in response to the change of the Earth’s tilt and orbital position around the Sun. Although officially spring doesn’t arrive until September 1, there are plenty of signs that spring has begun to sprung. The best indicator for me is when my mulberry tree bursts into flower and the leaf buds open and new leaves start to grow. It always amazes me that a mulberry tree can go from bare sticks to having little furry flowers (which look just like a small green mulberry fruit but hairy) bursting out. It’s a promise of good things to come – mulberries that is.

And silk worm owners can then breathe a sigh of relief too. Mulberries bear fruit on their new growth, so if you’ve pruned them back during winter you won’t be getting any early fruits as you’ve cut off the fruiting buds. Don’t fret as mulberries fruit a couple of times if treated right – so you will get fruit, just not as much as me. In a few months’ time, once you’ve harvested the fruit that is growing now, you can push the tree into another fruiting flush by cutting it back. Don’t be afraid to prune fairly hard as it’s best to have a low growing, multistemmed tree than one that is too tall to harvest the fruit. Mulberries also don’t ripen after being picked, so only pluck them off when they are plump and black (or white, it you’ve got that variety). If you don’t have a mulberry tree it’s a great time to plant one. Prepare a good-sized hole and use some quality soil to plant into – mounding is a good idea to help with drainage. Newly planted mulberries will fruit the following season and they will produce more and more fruit with each passing year.

They are fairly minimal care fruit trees. Just regular watering in spring and summer, plus fertilising four times a year. As mentioned before, pruning after fruiting is advised but you can let them grow large if you want a nice shady summer tree that loses its leaves to let the winter sun through. Chooks love the fallen fruit, so many mulberries are grown in chook runs.

The act of fruit picking will inevitably end up giving you purple fingers and hands. The stain is easily removed by picking some red fruits and vigorously squashing and scrubbing them into your stained skin. Then rinse under water and magically the dark mulberry stain is gone.

Contributed by Pauline Fraley Friday 31 July: Whistlers played at Maroochydore against the Phoenix. It was a bit windy and everyone struggled. We had to see where the wind took the ball and that made our rallies even longer. After lots of rallies and some deuces and tie-breakers, we managed to bring a good win home but we are just happy that we’re back on the court and playing. Score was 4422 games, 6-2 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Maree Hooley. The Wildcats were at home to Caloundra Skylarks. It was a great day for tennis except for the wind, which played havoc with everyone’s game. Lots of close sets but the team of Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Libby Howlett and Jenie Riding couldn’t bring it home. We’ll get them next time. Sunday, August 2: Nambour Netbusters proved too strong for the Witta team convincingly winning 9-2 sets. It was great for the Witta team to get out on the court again for their first match of the season. However, a replay of last year’s final failed to change the result. The depleted Witta team was missing the valuable input of their New Zealand connection Hayden who will be out for the season, no doubt due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, congratulations to our valuable replacement, Phil Blunden, playing at number four spot, who successfully won two of his four matches on his first outing. Thanks also to Annie Quarmby who played

well to also win her mixed doubles with Phil. Anthony, Andrew, Denis and Paula completed the team who all enjoyed a very competitive hit out. The Wikings had a road trip to Gympie to compete against Gympie Silver. It was a hard slog all day but the Wikings stayed in front barely and had a win. Score was six sets each 51-48. A big thanks to Yanni Stefandidakis and Mark Hamilton who filled in for us and the usual team of John Bradshaw, Glenn Smith, Nat Rienstra and Pauline Fraley. Wednesday, August 5: It was a lovely sunny winter’s day and enjoyable games of tennis were had by all but Witta Wagtails succumbed to the skill of Maroochydore TTs. Thanks to Gerry Gabriel, Jan Maguire, Cynthia Garvie and Sheryn Golledge. Friday, August 7: The Whistlers were washed out. The Wildcats travelled to Nambour to compete against the Nambas Champers. We had two rain delays but managed to get it in. Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Libby Howlett and Stacey English were just pipped at the post by two games! Final score was four sets each and 35-37. Wednesday, August 12: Despite Witta Wagtail’s loss to Maroochydore Missiles, the competition and tennis between the two teams were very enjoyable. Contributed by Ken Barker Thursday, July 30: Vince Carbery and Alice Spittle beat Bev Sockhill and Gillian Bradley 13-10 in a match where Alice played the peel of the century, putting her partner’s ball through from a great distance and then making the hoop herself. In another game Kath Smith with five bisques defeated Donna Manning and Priscilla Vickers 12-7 on a day perfect for being outside and exercising. Congratulations Priscilla on winning the division 4 club championship. All games were played in a good spirit with some adventurous souls braving miserable conditions. Raincoats in the middle of winter are no joke! Well done all players. Sunday, August 2: Preparing for the open club championship, Sarah Widin and Vince played well to overpower Donna and Kath 19–10. Thursday, August 6: Gillian Bradley, Bev Sockhill, Wallace Roy and Sally Adams had a wonderful time playing a variety of forms of the game including ricochet croquet on lawn two. On lawn one Kath Smith drew with Priscilla Vickers and Donna Manning 5-all. Ken Barker beat Sarah Widin 26–8. Sunday, August 9: Four more games of the open were played and, in the afternoon, Wallace played a team of Janelle Wilson and Priscilla, showing no mercy to beat them 10–4.

Contributed by Jodie Morgan A big weekend of home games again on the weekend of August 14-15, seeing some of our BeeGees teams taking the three points. This year there will be no finals, so every point counts. One of our reserve men, Iain Dalton, got injured in Saturday night’s game and we wish him a speedy recovery. We will be starting a football clinic for 3-7 year olds next term, so if your child wants to play football for the 2021 season it’s a great way of introducing them to the game. At Saturday night’s games we started our fruit and meat tray raffle. Thanks to the support of Barry’s Family Butcher and Matilda Fruit Barn for the awesome trays. Ken Fullerton won our first fruit tray and Ronnie Woulfe won the meat tray! Come down next Saturday and support our club. Competitive team scores: U12 girls lost 0-3 to Buderim FC. All games were strongly contested with at least two tied scores at the end of time. Three players, Donna, Nick, and Ken, scored an equal number of wins at the end of play. Ken won on a count back. Congratulations to all players for a very enjoyable event. Thanks to Donna for organising the draw and to the players who refereed in their bye. The family are sad to announce the sudden passing of Jan Cheal from Beerwah on August 10, 2020, aged 74 years. Wife, mother and nan to Graeme, Paul, Danielle, Ava, Sophia, Dianne and Andre. Well known for her work with the Beerwah Charity Sports, Neighbourhood Watch, SES, P&C, and a selfless advocate for the whole community. Jan will be sadly missed by all who knew her. The family are holding a private funeral. A large celebration for all friends and associates will be advised in a few months.
