know that it is way past New Year’s Day, but from all of us at Team Glasshouse Country & Maleny we wish you all a Happy New Year. We are looking forward to working with many of you once again this year, and to forming new relationships with those who are keen to work with us. This year over the Christmas break, Brownie and I packed up the car and headed south for a road trip with an extensive catch-up list of family and friends between Glass House Mountains and Wollongong and we spent loads of time relaxing, eating out, maybe having a couple of drinks, and definitely doing loads of talking. Something I realised about this type of break is that we spend a lot of time talking and loads of time answering questions about what we do. Many of our long-time friends and relatives don’t quite understand how a community newspaper works, so it was a great opportunity for us to talk about ourselves. It made me realise that I can simply say I spend my days interviewing people and writing stories – but it reminded me of how fortunate we feel that somehow we also do more than share the news of what is happening in our local towns. That we are able to participate, assist, encourage, help and generally make our communities that little bit more connected – and to feel the value in participating in our communities – is something really rewarding. Here's to a great 2017 and I am looking forward to hearing all your news! Regards,

Squishing his hands through playdough and channelling his inner castle creator are just some of the things that Charlie Pringle is pumped about doing now that he is a big kindy boy. Charlie is the third generation on his mother’s side to have a special connection to the Beerwah Kindergarten. While Charlie will walk through the front gate, bright-eyed and eager to play on January 23, his mother Madeleine Weyer did the same 20 years ago as part of the class of 1997. Ms Weyer’s mother, Helen White, now a teaching assistant at Glass House Mountains State School, found her career calling after she undertook work experience at the kindergarten while her three children attended. Ms Weyer said her time at Beerwah Kindergarten is still something she cherishes. “A lot of friends I came here with I am still in touch with,” she said. “It was wonderful, when we came in for orientation, to see so much has changed to the layout of the place – but the front of the kindy is still the same, it is very distinctive.”

Helen White, Charlie Pringle and Madeleine Weyer Ms White said she had fond memories of being on the fundraising committee and forging life-long friendships with other parents during her time at the kindy. “I’ve seen it grow and thrive into the centre it is now,” she said. “The resources have grown so much too and the natural playground area is conducive to imaginative play and it is such a caring centre, with a wealth of experience in the teachers and their assistants. “I just had such a wonderful experience through my kids and I am looking forward to it now through my grandkids.” Kindergarten co-director Katie Piva said they looked forward to getting to know their new kindy friends and having another year’s worth of adventures together.

Last Thursday a 41-year-old man from Peachester was pronounced dead at the scene of a single vehicle accident on Peachester Road, Beerwah. Paul Lorenzo D'Alessandro, a father of eight, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and no other people were injured. Police reports state that the silver Ford Falcon station wagon left the road and struck a tree at 12.30am on Thursday morning. Clayton’s Towing, who attended the recovery of

the vehicle, stated on their Facebook page that it was “… a very strong reminder that cars are deadly weapons and no one is invincible”. A funeral service will be held at Gregson & Weight Chapel, 5 Gregson Place, Caloundra on Friday, January 20 commencing at 1.00pm. Police investigations are ongoing. Sunshine Coast detectives have charged a 38-year-old man with a number of offences following investigations into monitoring equipment allegedly stolen from roadside locations between North Arm and Bracken Ridge between late October 2016 and January 2, 2017. Investigations commenced following the location of $150,000 worth of allegedly stolen machinery and equipment at addresses in Beerwah and Murrumba Downs on January 5. Police will allege batteries, switchboard cabinets, monitoring equipment and machinery were stolen from locations at Bruce Highway in Beerburrum, Steve Irwin Way in Beerburrum, Steve Irwin Way in Landsborough, Tilley Road in Chandler and Steve Irwin Way in Beerwah with the first offence occurring on October 18 and the last occurring on January 2.

A particular highlight for film lovers will be this year’s special guest, Australia’s favourite film critic David Stratton, who will participate in the event and share his enthusiasm for cinema. David is well-known from his long running movie shows on SBS and ABC TV with Margaret Pomeranz. Maleny Film Society’s president, Lorraine Duffy, said the society felt very fortunate to have David Stratton play a part in the festival. “He will be introducing films to the Festival’s patrons, and will share his love of cinema throughout the festival,” she said. “Throughout the year we screen the best of world cinema, but we like to have at least one weekend focusing on the best Australian Films (that we have not already screened) from the past year.

talk by film scholar Jeannette Delamoir, who will relate issues raised to the wider context of Australian cinema and society. A forum on the future of film will be held at 4.30pm on the Saturday discussing how films are now produced, distributed and consumed in new ways, and this session will consider the implications for regional Australia. A panel comprising different viewpoints will stimulate discussion about ways to promote good cinema experiences for all ages and encourage creative participation in this art form. Festival Passes start from $35.00 for members and $55.00 for non members. Individual movie screening tickets and tickets for the symposium and panel discussion are also available online. Since the election in July 2016, Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace has been working tirelessly to establish his presence in the community and in consultation with residents, formulate his priorities for the Fisher electorate. “It is incumbent upon me as the Federal Member to do all I can to ensure that this electorate is the place of choice for families and businesses to achieve their maximum potential in education, employment and retirement,” Mr Wallace said. “I have endeavoured to be an effective, solid local Federal Member who engages with the grass roots community. groups, support for small business and improved telecommunications. “In the short term, I have turned my efforts to fighting to secure the 15 additional medical placements needed at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH). “Due to the advocacy of both myself and Ted O’Brien, Member for Fairfax, the Federal Government is currently undertaking a review into the current allocation of places across Australia to ensure that the correct amount of medical school places are provided where they are needed most. “This review is expected to be completed by April and once we know the outcome more certainty will be provided around the future of the Medical School at SCUH. “My door is always open so if you have a comment to make or feedback to share please head to my website or Facebook page and have your say,” Mr Wallace concluded. Council encourages community to attend monthly meetings Sunshine Coast Council has introduced increased flexibility to its monthly Ordinary Meeting agenda to make it more convenient for community members to watch debates on key issues in the council chamber. Agenda items that are likely to be of significant public interest will, where possible, be considered at the start of the meeting. In 2017, council will also publish Ordinary Meeting agendas under new timeframes. From the January meeting, an index of agenda

items will be published on the council’s website two Fridays prior to the Ordinary Meeting and the full agenda will be published on the Friday prior to the Ordinary Meeting. The first Ordinary Meeting for 2017 will be held on Wednesday, January 25 instead of the Thursday which is the Australia Day public holiday. Ancient forest reserve comes of age

Have you been past Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve lately? If you haven’t, the $5 million redevelopments are coming along nicely and the much loved recreation and conservation park is coming of age. According to a Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson, the main structure of the building is now complete and the internal and external features are currently being fitted. “You can now start to see the building’s character emerging from behind the construction fencing,” the spokesperson said. “The hand-crafted rock feature walls adorning the façade of the building are completed, offering a stunning contrast to the natural timber lining of the exterior walls. “The canopy board walk is also almost complete. This has been an engineering feat with prefabricated sections lifted in by crane so as to leave the forest undisturbed and will provide visitors with a unique perspective of the forest.” Part of the remodelling includes new interpretive and educational displays and resources, with these elements beginning to be installed.

Vale George Pike George was born at Ehlma Siding via Warra on the Darling Downs, Queensland, on November 5, 1918. He was the second child of ten and the first son. George’s father and a friend (Jack Betts) farmed a soldier settlement block, but in 1923 they exchanged their farm for one in Glass House Mountains. George began school at Coochin State School in 1924. He recalls his father taking him across a log spanning Sandy Creek and, with an axe, blazing relevant trees on the way so he could find his way. The pineapple industry was a hard one for a large family and, after only one year of rural school in Nambour, George had to leave school and work to help support the large family – locally and then in Toowoomba. But George was accomplished at self education. In his 50s, George taught himself the piano and then learnt German from Mrs Dreschler in Glass House. George enlisted in the Air Expeditionary Royal Australian Air Force at the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1942 George gained an Honours degree in Aeronautical Engineering, with Honours in Metallurgy, from the RAAF School of Engineering, after which he trained as a pilot at Mildura and served with the First Tactical Air Force in the South West Pacific, with deployments including the Philippines and repatriation of Prisoners of War from Changi (Singapore) and Indo-China (now Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia). He was awarded a number of decorations, including 1939-45 Stars; the Pacific Star; Philippines Liberation Medal; 1939-1945 War Service Medal; 1939-1945 Service Medal and 1945-1954 Malaysian Campaign Medal.

George met his wife Merle (deceased, 1996) at a dance in Narromine and married in January 1942. George always says that this was the beginning of a romance that lasted almost 57 years. After share farming at Gympie for 18 months, George returned to Glass House Mountains in December 1947 where he and Merle had purchased a property. He cleared the land by hand and the family lived in a tent and then a shed. He later acquired an additional farm and paid for it by cutting and selling the timber, helped by Mr Dave Mawhinney. Over the years he was at the forefront of farming mechanisation and, with a close friend Mr Reg Bambling, was responsible for many of the initiatives now being improved and used. George was actively involved in the community. At various times he was Chairman of the Scouting Movement, United Fruit Growers (Glasshouse Mountains) and the School Committee. He was also one of the original members of the Glasshouse RSL and was involved since its beginning. He was Chairman for a long period and then Patron. His services were noted and in 2003 he was awarded the Anzac of the Year award for services given. In 1969 George and Merle began travelling overseas together extensively until Merle’s death. Indeed there were not too many countries in the world that they had not visited. In February 2012, George entered the then Embracia, now Glasshouse Views. He loved it and for a long period he was active in all the activities. George passed away peacefully on December 31, 2016.

Witta Rec Club rocks in New Year By Lea Parkes

If you didn’t make it to Witta for New Year’s Eve this year word is you missed a great event with 654 adults and 100 children ‘partying on’ under the stars to some great music! One of the evening’s highlights was the $10,000.00 cash prize won by newcomer and local man Wayne Maloney. The winners of the $100.00 prizes were Shaun and Monika Howard, Ken Burchill, Daniel and Bambi Hodgkin, Deborah Green, Robyn and Peter Wynn, Lisa Reye, Marilyn Johnston, Craig Pickering, Glenys McLean and Colin Kelly, Adrian and Jo Donaldson. Witta Recreation Club President Lynda Burgess said the night was fantastic and those involved, including the twenty committee members and volunteers who helped set the event up on Friday and Saturday and then turned up on Sunday to help clean up and to serve a revival breakfast for 100 people, were just amazing! “An event such as this shows just how generous our community is. We even had two of the winners of the $100.00 donate their winnings, and a 10 year old who found $50.00 on the ground donated it back to the club,” Lynda said. While the event was an absolute cracker, the committee have identified things that can be improved for next year and, following on from

End of an era; start of a new adventure After 23 years, Andrew Goodall is about to close the doors on one of the longest running photography galleries in Australia – and one of the longest standing businesses in Montville, Nature’s Image Photography. Self-taught from a young age, what started as a hobby, grew into an obsession and then a business. Andrew’s photography depicts the simple beauty of nature, without over-reliance on

digital enhancement and his framed photography now hangs on walls all around the world. “I started selling my work at markets in Brisbane,” Andrew said. “When I met my wife Monica in 1992, we travelled around Australia taking photographs for our business. We were looking for somewhere to settle and found a shop in Montville. “In April 1993 we opened a small gallery that proved successful within months, so we moved into larger premises. “That was 23 years ago. Monica has since taken up other creative interests including homeschooling our nine year old daughter, while I’ve run the gallery.” Since 2008, Andrew has conducted the highly successful ‘Photography Essentials’ workshop in Maleny. The practical, weekend workshop has taken over 1500 beginners from auto mode to manual and turned hobbyists into professionals. “I teach how to take creative control of your camera and uncover secrets to capturing great landscape and wildlife photographs.” In recent years, Andrew has discovered a new passion – hosting photography tours. He has taken small groups of enthusiasts to the Northern Territory (three times), the South Island of NZ, The Kimberley in WA, the Red Centre and to Norfolk Island (twice). His tours often sell out quickly with many ‘regulars’ keen to join every one. In May this year Andrew hosts a tour to Vanuatu to photograph

waterfalls, lagoons, beaches, tropical flora and fauna… even a live volcano. “The tours are a great opportunity for photographers of all levels to hone their skills, learn new ones and connect with fellow photographers – while enjoying some stunning locations. There are a few spots left on the Vanuatu tour and we’re planning for Tasmania, the Blue Mountains and more exciting destinations in Australia and overseas. “Each tour is professionally hosted by a travel company which leaves me free to focus on the photography and the photographers.” Andrew’s decision to close the gallery in Montville doesn’t mean an end to his photography career – far from it. He is already working on plans to launch a series of more advanced nature-based photography workshops including macro photography, bird photography, night photography and more. He has started writing a new e-book to follow up on his highly popular ‘DSLR Photography in Plain English’. Closing the gallery also opens up more free time for touring in the future. “After 23 years, it will be a big step to close the gallery doors, but all these projects have been buzzing around in my head for a while and I really need time to develop them – time I don’t have while tied to a seven day a week business. “In some ways it will be the end of an era, but I can’t wait to take people – cameras in hand – on many new adventures.”

Scleroderma Support Group Maleny Hospital Auxiliary Contributed by Cheyenne MacLeod Members of the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland Scleroderma Support Group meet regularly at the Nambour RSL to enjoy coffee and swap a story or two each month, which has become a welcoming distraction from the daily difficulties of living with the disease. The aim of the group, among other things, is to help raise awareness within the community of the disease and its associated conditions and symptoms. While the disease is mostly unknown it can have devastating effects on patients with one of the group passing away from complications of the disease just prior to Christmas. Anyone is welcome to come along to these informal gatherings. If you would like to know more about the group you can contact 0417 651 733.

Once again the friendly people of our area have responded generously to our yearly raffle. Tickets were sold outside the IGA Maleny from early November to mid-December. Everyone responded to the smiling faces of our volunteers who staffed the table each Wednesday and Friday. The first prize of a gourmet hamper packed with wonderful Christmas goodies and cheer was won by Ronne Wildman of Maleny.

Extra kilos from Christmas or unconscious food choices over the year, can create excess fat. So, yes let’s get rid of that by making better conscious choices and changing habits. Pay the kindness forward With Christmas and the New Year behind us, the crew from Glasshouse Country Pay it Forward were pleased that they were able to supply Christmas Hampers to 15 surprised and extremely grateful local families. With Christmas celebrations over, many family budgets now have to find the funds for the new school year, which can be a struggle. Administrator of the Glasshouse Country Pay It Forward group Lani Mercer said they would like to assist to ease the burden upon local struggling families. Changes at U BUTE Driver Training

Whole families in the Beerwah district would recognise with fondness this driver training vehicle, a green Holden utility, as part and parcel of their learning to drive experience. U BUTE Driver Training was started by Beerwah local Julie Gould, who wanted to offer young learner drivers “something different” to learn to drive in. In 2011, the idea became a reality and many people have learned to drive manual in the U BUTE Driver Training vehicle, a limited edition manual VE Holden Utility with the bonus of learning all about dual fuels, LPG and unleaded petrol, night driving and trailer reversing. Julie successfully taught many youth around Beerwah and, when it was time for their younger siblings to learn to drive, they learnt with Julie as well. However, after having a fall in early 2016, injuring her knee ligaments, Julie has decided to pursue her other passion of painting portraits and teaching art at www.vegemart.com.au Mooloolah locals Brian and Julia Corradetti answered the advertisement and were chosen to continue with the business, after it was established how suitable Brian was, with huge amounts of road usage and experience in driving school buses, motorcycles and cars and being a people person. Now with new owners the unique learn to drive experience will be available to more new learner drivers to the north, south and west of Beerwah. Julie Gould couldn’t be happier that the business she established is in great hands and she is now able to focus on her blossoming career in art and give attention to her family. Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce update with Ursula Starkovsky

Happy New Year to all our members and of course non-members alike. 2017 shapes up to be a great year, not just for people, but I feel also for business. We seem to have left most of the doom and gloom behind and the economy looks pretty steady. Last year, the Chamber invited both Stockland and Council’s planners to give us more information about Halls Creek and Beerwah East. Both presentations were very informative. Looking now at the Draft South East Queensland Plan, Halls Creek has been excluded from the Urban Footprint. For Glasshouse Country I believe the inclusion of Beerwah East is a great outcome. People might be against any further development in our area but they need to acknowledge that it is not old people that keep the economy going; it is young people who make most contributions. We need families and lots of children to call the Glasshouse Country home. If we miss out on that, our schools will suffer, every business will suffer and eventually we will become an “old folk’s home” starting in Beerburrum and ending in Glenview. In my mind, Beerwah will greatly benefit from any development within the Beerwah East area. Another topic that is very close to the Chamber is Tourism. I believe that we should do all we can to put Glasshouse Country on the Tourism Map. Currently we have an almost blank canvas. The Chamber will be working with other organisations and I will update on progress. Our next meeting will be February 21 at the Beerwah Hotel. Look out for the invitation.

Beerwah Eagle Boys relaunches as Pizza Hut

The Beerwah Eagle Boys store has joined the growing Pizza Hut franchise business, relaunching as Pizza Hut on Thursday, and employing 15 people across full-time and casual roles. Pizza Hut recently bought the majority of Eagle Boys stores across Australia in a move that created the second biggest pizza franchise in Australia. Franchisee Graham Fraser said his business had been operating as Eagle Boys for nearly 17 years, and he was excited about the opportunities of working with a dynamic and growing brand like Pizza Hut, particularly under new Australian ownership. “I am excited to continue our support of local sporting clubs, schools and not for profit organisations and look forward to growing the business and employing more locals in the future,” Graham said. Environment Drone mapping first for USC students Imagery from flying drones will be used in USC’s Environmental Science degree this year as students learn the latest methods of mapping the physical geography of the local area, from underwater seagrass banks to farmland. Lecturer in Physical Geography and drone pilot Dr Javier Leon, who coordinates USC’s Environmental Science program, is in command of six UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) for semester one from 27 February – and has some exciting ideas for the Biogeography course. “USC will be the first university in Australia to train students to analyse the environment by combining cutting-edge technology like drones and the Cave,” Dr Leon said, referring to the 3D, immersive CAVE2TM facility on campus at Sippy Downs. “Students will be exposed to the whole range of research activities, from data collection and sampling in the field with drones, through analysis and modelling, to visualisation of final outcomes. Dr Leon is a qualified UAV controller and radio operator who has been flying drones to assist his USC research for more than two years, using remotesensing cameras mounted on small drones weighing under two kilograms. The models he’s currently using are DJI Phantom 3s. His detailed photos and videos have examined a range of features on land and sea, with projects mapping kangaroo and koala locations, vegetation species, coral reef islands, beach erosion and nearshore bathymetry (ocean floor depth). “I already have two research students starting collaborative community projects that use drones to monitor soil erosion control measures on Glasshouse Mountains pineapple farms, and to monitor seagrass banks around the Noosa River.” Dr Leon said drones were transforming scientific studies by enabling cheaper, quicker ways of recording multiple high-resolution images, compared to previous reliance on satellite and aeroplane sensing and/or manual fieldwork.

Thanks to Seeing Eye Dogs Australia, you can give the gift of confidence and independence to someone who is blind or has low vision this year by contributing to the development of a Seeing Eye Dog. Though SEDA is the only national provider of Seeing Eye Dogs in Australia, the puppy caring program has previously been focused in Victoria. Now, thanks to a new team of puppy development trainers based in Queensland – including Jane Kefford, Brendan Ainsworth and Rob Cramer – the puppy caring program is being offered across South-East Queensland, from Burleigh Heads to Noosa. The journey from playful puppy to working Seeing Eye Dog takes about two years, and the first step in this journey is being placed with a volunteer puppy carer for ten to twelve months. Looking for an activity to help you stay young in body and mind? More and more people of all ages are turning to the ancient Chinese art of tai chi. And various support groups helping people with diabetes, back pain, arthritis, obesity and stress-management, are encouraging people to try tai chi. “Taoist Tai Chi is specifically designed for health and has great benefits for balance, coordination, flexibility, strength and circulation,” said Corinne Williams, a Sunshine Coast instructor with the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Australia. “People think Tai Chi looks so slow and gentle, and it is, but once they try it they discover it is also a demanding exercise for the whole body and mind which can have far-reaching health effects,” Corinne added. Corinne noted that recent medical research shows tai chi can boost immune function, help control the symptoms of conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease and fibromyalgia, reduce the risk of falls, improve cardiovascular function, and improve mood and cognitive function. “The personal experiences of our members back up what the research is saying, and more,” Corinne said. Introduced to the western world 40 years ago by Chinese Taoist monk Master Moy Lin-shin, Taoist Tai Chi is designed specifically for holistic health. Based on the ancient teachings of Taoism, Taoist Tai Chi is also known as a moving meditation and many practitioners experience a deep calm while doing the set. The Taoist Tai Chi Society of Australia is non-profit, volunteer and charitable organization. The instructors are all volunteers and motivated by their desire to share the benefits they have themselves received. Little Kickers at Landsborough Little Kickers is a locally based soccer training program that caters for kids aged 18 months through to seven years. Run locally every Saturday at Landsborough State School, the pressure free program offers kids of every ability the chance to have fun, socialise with others and learn the game of soccer in an encouraging environment. Sunshine coast local Alex Ollier, who has been coaching kids for six years, says the program offers three 45 minute aged-based classes a week. ‘Mega Kickers’ is on at 8.00am (ages five to seven), ‘Junior Kickers’ starts at 9.00am (ages two to three and a half) and ‘Mighty Kickers’ is at 10.00am (three and half through to five years). “It’s a great introduction to sport as well as a fantastic way to introduce young kids to working in a team environment – our program is inclusive focussed and we cater for all level of ability and needs as well as social skills. We all have a great time each week!” says coach Alex. The program does not run to school terms and so girls and boys are welcome to join at anytime throughout the year. Last week, on my first day back in the office, I couldn’t have been more pleased to be able to sneak out for lunch and be able to call it work! The heat was just horrendous when we headed up to the Lookout Café at Glass House and, before we had even got our ordering worked out, we had one of the lovely waitresses telling us how much she had missed the paper over the last three weeks – always nice to know that people notice when you aren’t around. As you would expect in holiday time the place was really busy and, judging by the pace the staff were working, they have been totally kept on their toes from many tourists who have called in to their café with the spectacular view. As a total coffee lover I am usually quick to place my order, however on this day all I could think about was something long and cool and tropical, mmm sadly as they don’t serve cocktails, I went for a mango smoothie and Brownie chose the sweet and creamy iced coffee.

What I always like when we go to the Lookout is how they are always really accommodating with my orders. They explained that their smoothies were made on juice and real fruit, and still being January and being on a campaign to reduce my sugar intake, I asked them to make it with skim milk and no juice and – as I expected – it was no trouble for them. I really appreciate when you go somewhere to eat and they are so flexible and helpful. As we sat inside I was listening to the other customers placing orders and I could hear the girls

answering lots of questions: Is this gluten free? Can I have ice cream instead of cream on the side? (And the list goes on.) It was hot and humid and the staff were all lovely, patient and calm with all the requests. Another thing that I love about the Lookout Café is that while they have a fairly compact kitchen they are able to offer a really expansive menu. Brownie went with the fish, chips and salad, I went for something a bit smaller – smashed avocado with crushed feta and grilled cherry tomatoes (hold the bacon) – and we were both really satisfied with what we were served. Sadly by the time I had got through the lush smoothie and the meal there was no space for dessert. But the smoothie was a really sweet treat in itself and, after the tourists have all headed home, I am looking forward to heading back to the Lookout – and I know the owner, Chris, is keen to welcome back her band of regular local customers once again.

Playground Renewal - QCWA Park - Old Landsborough Rd, Landsborough

I am pleased to announce that the renewal of the playground equipment is now complete at QCWA Park. The new playground looks very much in character with the location and the new equipment will keep the youngsters entertained both physically and mentally. I would like to thank the users of the park for their patience during the replacement process and I hope the refreshed playground brings a lot of joy to the community.

Carnarvon Drive, Beerwah road reseal program I would like to advise all residents living in the vicinity of Carnarvon Drive, that council’s road reseal program have scheduled Carnarvon Drive for asphalt work starting on Tuesday, January 17 (weather permitting), this will in effect also facilitate the opening of the new link road to the Coochin Twins estate.

Cycling Workshops

Change to bin lid colours

Please keep in mind that council is progressively changing over waste wheelie bin green lids with red lids to comply with the Australian Standard. This is a long term project with exchanges only being undertaken as maintenance issues occur with the existing lids: red – general waste, yellow – recycling, lime green – garden waste. Cross contamination between bins is a real issue and this slow replacement process eventually means our general waste bins will be consistent with other parts of the country, making them easier to identify and use more appropriately.

50th Anniversary Fund

The 50th Anniversary of the naming of our wonderful Sunshine Coast will be officially commemorated on August 1, 2017. The 50th Anniversary Fund is a new, one-off community grants program for new and existing non-council events, projects or programs. It’s a great opportunity to develop an idea and get a group together to celebrate our 50th anniversary year. Mark McArdle State Member for Caloundra Auxiliary to provide extras for region’s Palliative Care Unit Anyone who has experienced the helplessness of watching a loved one struggle with a life altering condition would appreciate the importance of a palliative care team. Because of the need for the specialised care provided by these types of facilities, the Caloundra Hospital’s Auxiliary has set a fundraising target to assist the Palliative Care Unit at the Caloundra Hospital by 2018. Palliative care involves more than pain management, it identifies and treats patient symptoms that can be caused from emotional, spiritual and social suffering. As a family-centred model of care, the family and carers also receive much needed practical and emotional support to cope throughout all stages. Depending on the patient and their needs, palliative care can be delivered in a home, hospital, hospice or a residential age care facility. In our region we are extremely fortunate to have an arm of the Caloundra Hospital dedicated to the provision of specialist palliative care. Thanks to fundraising by the Caloundra Hospital Auxiliary, the Unit grew from a two bed facility to the ten beds we have today. Caloundra Hospital Auxiliary President Claudine Hagan said their previous achievements had made a significant difference to the overall shortfall of palliative care beds on the Sunshine Coast. The money will not be used to purchase palliative care beds, nor in the construction of additional space, but to augment the capital and fit-out costs that are to be met by the government. The Auxiliary believe the funding is best used to provide those extras that will make the unit more attractive. Making it a warm and inviting place where family and friends can comfortably spend time is also a key ingredient to improving the mental health of all involved in the patient’s journey. Most importantly, we need to praise the tenacious, hardworking group of volunteers for their determination. More than 250 volunteers form the Auxiliary and together run Bardo’s Bazaar and the Mary Rose Café at the Hospital. As a community we can help terminally ill patients see out the final chapter of their lives in a bright and friendly environment. Bardo’s Bazaar is located on West Terrace, opposite the Caloundra RSL, and is open Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm. Phone 5436 8823. When we see children playing we can see that they are having fun and enjoying themselves, but research shows us that play is an important part of a child’s learning and development. Study masterclass

Students from Beerwah High School will join more than 70 switched-on Year 12 students from across the region to take part in Study Skills Masterclasses at USC this week to learn how to study smarter rather than harder. The classes, from 8.30am-2.30pm each day, will boost the students’ knowledge about assessment expectations and provide tips on how to study more effectively and minimise stress during their final year of high school. Each day will focus on a separate subject area, starting with Maths B and Maths C on Monday, and continuing with Biology, Physics, Chemistry and English throughout the week. USC Project Manager Julie Hobbins said the masterclasses would give participants the best opportunity to succeed academically in Year 12. “We know that many students find Year 12 very stressful academically, so an important part of the session is to pass on skills about stress management and making the best use of their study time," she said.

I would like to warn people trying to get to Aldi to be very careful, the sign says to be careful of people crossing. Recently my wife, who has been diagnosed with a benign brain tumour, and I started walking behind a car that was waiting for traffic. We were shocked that the driver of the four wheel drive never even slowed down a bit. Her comment was that it was a driveway not a walk way. Where has the decency and respect for others gone? Intolerance, ignorance, bigotry, and hate are what Pauline Hanson’s One Australia party breeds. This has never been more evident with the candidate for the electorate of Glass House, Tracey Bell-Henselin. Her recent Facebook rant says it all, yet the Ginger Whinger, Pauline Hanson, says she has done nothing wrong. In Australia now, people are being set upon by their own government with poorly designed software that demonises the poor and disadvantaged. Australia has no need for the likes of BellHenselin who, with her message of fear and hate, does not benefit anyone, and destroys the community. Her message directed against the LGBTI community is bereft of reason and knowledge; it is hateful and a poor example to the young people of our community, particularly those grappling with their own sexuality. A question, have you been ‘Racked’? If you have, you will know what I am talking about, if not, allow me to bring you up to speed and inform you of the experience my wife and I had at Bombay Bliss, Beerwah just prior to Christmas. We were having our usual Monday night Special, which we really enjoy. A gentleman and his son were seated across from us, and they in fact finished their meal shortly after our arrival and on leaving wished us a Merry Christmas. Nothing untoward about that, being in the Christmas Spirit. However, on the completion of our meal, I walked up to the counter with money in hand to pay our bill. Shania, our waitress informed me that there was no money to be paid, our bill had been taken care of and that we had in fact, been ‘Racked’. Church on the Rise, Beerwah had paid for our meal as a Random Act of Christmas Kindness. The gentleman and his son had done more than just wish us a Merry Christmas on their way out. It really made our night and we appreciated the gesture. Their church operates in Beerwah and Maleny and all are welcome at their services. We take it as a privilege to have been ‘Racked’ by the Church on the Rise and shown Christian good will in the local community. God bless you and all the best in the future. Jokes shared across the ditch

This is a photo of my 97-year-old mother, Myra Olsen. She lives in New Zealand. She has been very active all of her life, and puts her longevity down to having Manuka honey every day on her cereal. She still has her driving licence, although she doesn't drive at night anymore, and only does short trips locally. I have been sending her the jokes out of the Glasshouse Country News, ever since they first were printed. She takes them along to the Seniors Club she belongs to and they get read out at the meetings. Last year she stood down from the role of vice president, and also from organising the entertainment for each meeting. In January this year she finally moved into a unit in a retirement village, where she still leads a very active lifestyle. She also knits beanies for the premature babies in the hospital (so far over 1200) and catches the train to deliver them. Gayle Amos Beerwah

Level crossing concerns

Re:"Landsborough show of strength" December 20, 2016 edition. The TMR should hang their in shame for the way they are treating this area regarding a consultation process of the proposed rail improvements to the only rail going north. When are we to see some really professional proposals for these long awaited road/rail improvements? If you would like to see how ‘Vicrail’ present their proposed railway improvements, go to http:// levelcrossings.vic.gov.au/crossings/caulfield-todandenong on your screens. This life-like video at this website shows the range of possibilities that can be presented to a community to have an overhead rail. This Victorian project is going to remove nine level crossings, and involve the rebuilding of five stations. It will help to alleviate many congested roads with level crossings. Currently in Murrumbeena, Victoria, you can wait for up to 87 minutes during the morning rush period, before crossing the rail line What's more, its finishing date will be in 2018! So where is the Queensland comparison to public input? Our Sunshine Coast HAS to be able to cater for the million or so projected population in the near future, without rebuilding the entire infrastructure again and again. This type of infrastructure offers so many possibilities for Landsborough, apart from all the nearby towns. Never let there be

Re: NBN Towers

Richard Giles (GC&M News, Dec 20) suggests NBN towers would lead to a drop in value of nearby properties, and uses a grab-bag of cherry-picked reports to support his contention. Amusingly, his only antipodean evidence comes from a NZ study —once again unpublished— ‘The Impact Of Cellular Phone Base Station Towers On Property Values’, that states "it appears health effects from cellular phone equipment (antennas and base stations) pose few (if any) known health hazards", which rather undermines Giles's main argument. The same study reveals that while some home buyers would pay less for a home located close to a tower, 80% of buyers would not care (for example, I know that I would pay more to be near a tower, because of the better access speeds I'd enjoy). Moreover, the study states that "For the 20% who said the proximity of the tower was of concern to them, the most common reasons given for this were: health reasons, as proclaimed by the media, and that it obstructed their views somewhat". So there you have it: aesthetics (views), and health rumours in the media, promulgated by people like Mr Giles. The study continues: "Of the 19% that said the tower was not constructed when they bought the house or began renting, all said they would have gone ahead with the purchase anyway if they had known that the tower was to be constructed". Oh dear, looks like an own goal for Giles! In addition, the same study mentions two other studies, commissioned by NZ Telecom, that showed property prices were "not statistically significantly affected by the presence of towers". I contend that most people would enjoy house price gains by being able to boast high speed internet access, which is rapidly becoming vital for work-from-home professionals and businesses, to say nothing of seamless access to rich media for entertainment and education. On another issue, Giles is again confused when he says I am relying on "NBN PR reports" to make comments on NBN reliability. Actually I was relying on the independent Ombudsman's report, as I clearly stated in my previous letter. As for the Maleny real estate agent who stated that property values "could drop by 20%" if an NBN tower were built, may I ask who this agent is? My local agent told me the opposite, namely that NBN access would make Maleny properties more saleable and desirable. I suppose if you had a tower right in your backyard, it could affect the home's price, but the tower planned for Burgess Avenue, Maleny, for instance, is not near any house, and I am not aware of any NBN towers planned for anyone's backyard. Lastly, Giles seems to think that if we all stamp our feet and refuse to accept a tower, we'll get fibre cable instead. I'm sorry to disappoint, but I can confirm, having spoken to the NBN representative who came here a year or so back to scout for tower sites, that the chance of us getting cable are extremely, even vanishingly, remote. Recently, while away on our first extended family vacation in five years, the electronic containment system which normally keeps our dogs safely

home decided to fail. This resulted in our two Labradors escaping. If you received a pair of unexpected visitors while we were away, we sincerely apologise – they were missing us and decided to wander on a few occasions, which does not normally happen. We are home again now, and in the process of repairing the containment system and taking steps to ensure the bandits...I mean dogs, cannot get out again. wrote first letters to Maleny residents looking for tower sites at specific locations in the district, and just four months before the first public ‘consultation' meeting in Maleny in September. The report is titled 'Fixed Wireless and Satellite Review', May 2014 and is 135 pages long!. A few things emerge which are never dealt with properly in public meetings or seldom acknowledged in 'community consultations'. In the introduction sections they state regarding service and performance – "While Forecasts are based on NBN Co's best considered professional assessment, NBN Co, its officers and employees do not give any guarantee or assurance to any third party that the results, performance or achievements expressed or implied by the Forecasts will actually occur. As such, the Forecasts should not be relied on or considered to be a representation of what will happen by any third party." And when writing about coverage from NBN towers – "By using outdoor wireless network termination units (WNTDs) at the premises with near line-of-sight to the fixed wireless tower, NBN Co can deliver the required performance level, and satisfactory cell coverage to address 20 percent of the area within 14km radius." (Page 61). To summarise – they cannot promise anything (performance or achievements) stated in the report, and secondly, cannot guarantee a wireless signal service to 80% of premises within 14kms of the tower site. This is despite the clear

promises of 25/5 Mbps fast broadband at all public meetings. They do state on page 61 that some 50% of premises served will generally fall within 3 km of towers, but this is a generalisation depending on the district. We could wind up with 50% of people in tower areas not even getting the promised NBN services. Richard Giles, Conondale

State of the art police station

No doubt the new police station in Maleny will be superior to the old one and be advantageous to the police stationed there. I'm sure they will be pleased to move in. BreastScreen back at Beerwah BreastScreen Queensland’s mobile service is back in Beerwah this month. Women aged 40 years and over are encouraged to take a positive step towards monitoring their breast health and utilise this free service. The mobile service will be available to the public from January 17 to 27. Health Promotion Officer Deb Zammit said the service has appointments available now, including some late afternoon appointments. “We would like to invite women to take advantage of this free, local health service while it is in the area,” Ms Zammit said. “One in eight Queensland women will develop breast cancer at some stage in their life. As there is currently no means of preventing breast cancer, the focus in reducing deaths from this disease has been on finding breast cancer as early as possible.” “The holiday season can be a busy time for women and they may not have had time to attend to reminders for their bi-annual breast screen,” Ms Zammit said. “It’s not just women who receive a letter from BreastScreen Queensland who can participate in this free screening program – women aged 40 years and older who haven’t received a letter but who would like to make an appointment with our service can just call 13 20 50. There are no referrals required.” BreastScreen Queensland also now offers online appointments. The online service allows women to pre-book an appointment, making it easier for women to fit the appointment into their schedule. The Big Picture in Pain - In the past month, around half us will have experienced an episode of pain which has lasted at least one day, with the most common sites being the low back (30%), hip (25%), neck and shoulder (25%) and knee (24%). Prevalence of chronic pain increases through adult life, reaching a peak around the seventh decade. Chronic pain may be related to premature mortality, cancer and cardiovascular death which may partly be related to lifestyle factors such as low levels of physical activity and poor quality diet. 2. In the Beginning - Early life factors have been linked to chronic pain in adulthood. There is an increased risk of chronic pain in adulthood related to social environment in childhood as well as physically traumatic events such as premature birth, very low birth weight, and hospitalisation for a motor vehicle accident at young ages. 3. Early life factors and adult chronic pain - Physical stresses result in altered function of the stress axis, which are still present at 18 months. Risk is likely to involve both genetic and environmental effects although it is likely that many genes, all with small effects, will be involved.

Out & About 70 years a reason to celebrate Last year GC&M News brought you the story about the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub-Branch reaching their 70th anniversary in 2016. To make the celebration official, members, along with their families and regular supporters of the club, attended a special dinner in December to mark the occasion. The event was sponsored by Kel and Lorraine McNamara from KLM Energy. The sub-branch has a very special spot in their hearts as Lorraine’s dad George Morgan was part of the management committee for more than 30 years. Someone else who was also a recognised for special attention on the night was Glass House local Raymond Burnett, a sub-branch member who recently turned 100 years of age. On the night, the Federal member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace (also the Sub-Branch’s Patron), presented Ray with a special certificate from the RSL. Ray was also given the honour of blowing out the candles on the RSL cake – they made the job a little easier for him by not putting the whole 100 candles on the cake. Sub-Branch president Kevin Beasley said it was a great night, and they were pleased to be able to include a special acknowledgement on the night for all the volunteers who contribute to Friday night dinner and bar service at the Club each week throughout the year. The sub-branch really appreciate the efforts of the volunteers and are always keen to hear from other locals that may be able to contribute to the tasks include food preparation, service and clean up.

If anyone would like to know more about it they can give me a call on 0429 667 961." The sub-branch would also be keen to find someone who can serve behind their bar on a Friday night. If you think this might be something you can do, ring the club and leave a message for them on 5438 7777. If you would like to support the club by coming along for dinner, they will be opening their doors for the first time in 2017 this Friday night. Meals are available from 6.00pm and the bar opens at 5.00pm.

Ceremony of Remembrance

The local community is invited to join in a ‘Ceremony of Remembrance’ of the Indigenous people in relation to the significance of Australia Day, 2017. Dr Ray Barraclough, Convenor of the Australia Day Commemoration Ceremony Committee, said this will be the fourth year that the event is being held in Maleny and each year the numbers of people attending has grown. The initial ceremony in 2014 drew 20 people, around 30 people participated in 2015, and between 90 and 100 people came in 2016. Dr Barraclough invites anyone who wishes, to share in a brief ceremony during which a minute's silence will be observed to remember the Indigenous people of this land, who lost their lives in the changing possession of this land that began on the January 26, 1788. This Remembrance Ceremony will be held at the RSL Hall, at 1 Bunya Street, Maleny at 10.00am on Thursday, January 26, 2017. Welcome back and a happy new year to you all. The recent rains are very welcome and have come at the right time. As you drive around the region, the gardens are looking superb and are launching back into life again. Here are some things to do around the garden in January … or what’s left of it. • Prune your flowering shrubs, such as azalea, gardenia, camellia, ixora, bottlebrush, tibouchina, brunsfelsia and grevillea. • Tip prune poinsettia to make them bush out and produce more flowers this winter. • Make a note of frangipani plants that you like the flower’s colour of, so that you can go back in winter to take cuttings. • Do not feed your garden in very hot weather, as it will place too much stress on the root systems. • Do not use chemical sprays once temperature reaches 28 degrees, or you will burn your plants. Best time is early evening, once the sun has set. • Spray hibiscus with Confidor to prevent hibiscus beetle from damaging the flowers. • Feed gardenias, azaleas and vireyas each month through summer with pelletised manure and water with organic liquid feed such as seaweed or liquid blood and bone. • Trim runaway shoots on wisteria, only up until late February / March, otherwise you'll prune off flower budwood. • Roses will be looking for nutrients about now if they are going to have a prolific flowering later in the season. A good fertiliser regime is to apply an organically-based fertiliser every six to eight weeks from August right through to March. To keep roses in good condition in subtropical areas, prune in January and February, not winter. • Citrus trees need to be fed this month with a Citrus and Fruit Tree Fertiliser at the rate of 125 grams per year of the tree’s age. Citrus has shallow roots, so never dig the fertiliser in - simply sprinkle it on top and water it in. • Scale are likely to be a problem on citrus trees at this time of year so keep an eye out and, at the first sign, spray with a white or pest oil, applied in the late afternoon or early evening to prevent leaf burn. • Now is the time when lawns will respond to aeration and for those gardeners who wish to work off some of the excesses of Christmas, going over it with a fork will do the trick. • Tomatoes are more at risk now to problems with diseases and pests, especially the fruit fly. Fruit fly and tomato grub can be controlled by chemical means, by paper bagging the fruits or by using a fine net over the entire bush. • Sweet corn is one vegetable that can be planted right through until the end of February. Remember always to plant sweet corn in a block rather than rows for better pollination. • Parsley plants may just suddenly die. This is normal, as they do fall victim to summer heat and humidity. Replant with fresh seedlings. • Pawpaw can be planted now into a well drained spot in full sun. Established Pawpaws need plenty of water now. Fertilise with 20 grams of pelletised manure per square metre. Trees that are too tall can be cut back now. Cut trees 1m from ground and cover cut top with tin can. • For low chill stone fruit, apply dolomite and gypsum now, at 200 grams dolomite/gypsum per square metre of drip line. • Protect your mangoes from marauding bats and possums by covering each with a cloth or paper bag, or cover the tree with netting. • Feed your leafy green vegetables a weekly dose of a soluble nitrogen fertiliser. Use a seaweed tonic as a foliar spray to keep them healthy. • Control caterpillars with Dipel; avoid planting highly susceptible vegetables at this time of year, such as Chinese cabbage or broccoli. • Top up organic garden mulches. Keep the layer about 15cm thick.

Now on to Bowls - Tuesday, January 10, 12 members contested the first competition of 2017 and the winners were Dennis Kyling and Graeme Glover. The Jackpot wasn’t won. Wednesday evening’s first Twilight Challenge for 2017 was extremely well patronised with no less than 52 competitors. Contributed by Norm Taylor San Taekwondo held their end of year grading at the Beerwah Training Centre. The end of year grading took almost four hours to complete with students tested on basic drills and skills as well as ‘poomsae’ or form which is a series of moves representing various attacks and defences. Higher belts also have to do full contact sparring, timber breaking and demonstrate real world self-defence scenarios involving multiple attackers. In total thirty-eight students from Beerwah, Kenilworth and Maleny clubs were tested for promotion to their new belt level. Although not all students passed, overall the standard was good with Beerwah brothers Harley and Brodie Treverton achieving their club level black belts and Instructor Kasia grading for her internationally recognized third degree black belt. Kasia has been training for the past 3 years since her last grading to achieve this goal. The best blue, red and black belt grading was awarded to Kasia Bartnikowska and the best yellow/white grading to John Bleyenberg. Just for Laughs Old men An elderly man in Queensland had owned a large property for several years. He had a dam in one of the lower paddocks where he had planted mango and avocado trees. The dam had been fixed up for swimming when it was built and he also had some picnic tables placed there in the shade of the fruit trees. One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the dam to look it over, as he hadn't been there for a while. He grabbed a ten litre bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the dam, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer he

saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his dam. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, “We're not coming out until you leave!” The old man frowned, “I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the dam naked.” Holding the bucket up he said, “I'm here to feed the crocodile.” Moral: Old men may walk slow, but they can still think fast.
