Hi What'sHappening January 2018 Everyone... 19 Welcome to 2018 and our first edition of the year! After three weeks away from the weekly schedule I have returned to my desk feeling so relaxed, energised and ready to take on the world. Over the break we have upgraded our computer server and moved our email system ‘to the clouds’ – so, not surprisingly, where technology is concerned, not everything has gone absolutely according to plan! So, fortunately my positive mindset has helped with dealing with the challenges and frustrations! While I do love what our new technology will be able to do, I am not 100% confident that all of our emails that were sent between December 20 and January 12, before the deadline for this edition, have actually come through. If you haven’t received a response from an email sent, or your contribution did not make it into this edition, please resend as we believe we have now ironed out all of the glitches! Local News Witta New Year’s Eve a winner By Lea Parkes Witta Recreation Club have hosted their second successful New Year’s Eve event over the festive season and the club’s president Lynda Burgess said the club was really pleased with how smoothly things ran, with even the late afternoon storm not causing any disruption to the event. “We really appreciate the level of support we received from the community, from the volunteers who helped set up the event over the weekend, as well as the great work done by the Maleny Lions Club in the serving of the food and the cleaning up,” she said. Among the many highlights of the evening were the cash prize draws, in particular the major draw of $10,000, which was taken out by Witta local Karen Lusk. “It was great to see Karen being the winner,” Lynda said. “It seemed really fitting as she is a descendant of the Nothling family who have been involved with the club since its beginnings. “Back in the 40s and 50s Karen’s grandparents were also involved in the club and her Dad, Len Lowe served as the club president, just before the changes took place with the building.” Along with the big winner there were ten $100 prizes on offer, with seven of the 10 winners there on the night. Happy customer wins $10,000! Christmas came early for one lucky customer at Shell Beerwah (located at the Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Co-operative) who recently won $10,000! Store manager Frances Ross, along with the Co-op’s general manager Steve Williams, were very excited to share this fantastic news that one of their customers had won the national competition run by the business's New Sunrise Group. The promotion, which ran nationally throughout November, was an ‘Instant Win’ competition where customers of Shell Beerwah could win prizes instantly with in-store purchases Steve Williams by scratching a ticket or could go in the draw for the $10,000 cash her prize prize. Over 10,000 entries were received nationally and the winner was Beerwah Shell customer, Brittany Mugliett. Frances and all the staff members were understandably thrilled for Brittany’s win which lets her spend $10,000 tax free on whatever she wishes, and Brittany herself was ecstatic about winning. “We had a lot of local entries but when the call came through in mid December from the New

Local unsung champion of song writing matter often gets people in a ‘one to one’ way as they realise the similarities of their own stories,” explains Kelly. A good friend and fellow musician ‘Richo’ Richardson reckons that Kelly is true music icon who is also a genuinely a decent person. “Kelly is the songwriters' songwriter – his music leaves you feeling like your burdens are lifted and his songs have something that everyone can pull something out of. He is so humble he never pushes his own barrow yet he just inspires others,” says Richo. After nearly 50 years of musicianship, Kelly certainly has the life experience to spin a good yarn that resonates with people at a heartfelt level. A previous winner of the Australian Songwriters Association ‘Song Writer of the Year’, Kelly has seen a noticeable increase in interest in Alt Country/Roots based country music as audiences respond favourably to simple heartfelt songs which tells stories from ‘the right place’.

His recent album launch at the Maleny RSL had a brilliant turnout and, considering it was the night of the massive storm that hit the Hinterland, the 140 strong crowd was a testament to the appreciation of Kelly’s music. “It was a great gig on a big wet night and I had some great musicians helping me out. Sometimes I think I’m just the luckiest person on earth to do what I do!” says Kelly. With the new album now launched, Kelly will now turn his focus to the Tamworth Country Music Festival where he will be reconnecting with fellow musicians and appreciative audiences.

Kelly Cork is one of our unsung champions of song writing whose quality and depth of writing strikes a poignant cord with those who hear the gift of his talent. Playing guitar since he was nine years old, the Maleny born and bred local pens songs from the heart – songs that, in a world of increasing disconnect, contain that wonderful quality that draws people into the humanity of his music. Growing up, Kelly was deeply influenced by great Australian country rock by bands such as The Stars and The Dingoes and also enjoyed Neil Young and Bob Dylan. People may remember Kelly’s work with the band ‘The Rain’ and ‘As the Crow Flies’ and the ‘Above the Blue’ project. Last month he released a solo 10-track album ‘Dead End Street’ which follows on from his previous solo work ‘One of These Days’. When asked what he feels draws people to his music, Kelly suggests that maybe it’s because he writes and sings about everyday human stories focused on day to day life, for example what’s happened up the street, as well as real situations and people. His songs cover a range of topics from family stories deep with emotion through to songs of simple everyday hardships – though Kelly is quick to point out that he hopes his music won’t put people to sleep or have them seeking counselling! “I guess most of my work has some element of realism. I think people connect to it as we all really share the same stories. I find the subject

USC study options for 2018

The University of the Sunshine Coast will host its first special information events of the year this Thursday, January 18, for potential students weighing up their study options. The free Meet USC–Options sessions will be held at the university’s campuses on the Sunshine Coast from 2pm-5pm for anyone thinking about studying at USC in 2018. For those who might need help in choosing the right degree or finding an alternative pathway to university study, these events provide an opportunity to drop in and chat face-to-face with USC staff. The Meet USC–Options events will include campus tours, presentations about what to expect as a student, and advice about alternative study

Improvements coming for Palmwoods-Montville Road The resilience of Palmwoods-Montville Road to severe weather will be further improved with targeted road and drainage work about to begin. Transport and Main Roads North Coast District Director Leah McKenzie said the work would improve safety and reduce the risk of potential road damage that can be caused by severe weather events. “Repairs will be made to the road surface and concrete applied to the drains to improve their strength and durability,” Ms McKenzie said.

“Commencing on 15 January 2018, this important work is expected to take five days and will affect about 350 metres of the road between Maleny-Montville Road (Main Street) and Shurvells Road.” Ms McKenzie said the work would require the 350 metre section of Palmwoods-Montville Road to be closed for up to five days, but access will be maintained for local residents. Business News Landsborough Dental Prosthetist celebrates 20 years Peter Langlois is celebrating 20 years as a dental prosthetist in Landsborough. The practice has been located at the same premises, in the Landsborough Medical Centre for the entire time. Peter would like to take this opportunity to thank his regular clients for their fantastic ongoing support over these years. Peter completed his apprenticeship as a Dental Technician. He undertook more study to become a Dental Prosthetist in 1993. This enabled him to work directly with the public. Previously, clients had to be seen by a dentist to have this type of prosthetic work done, but following changes to legalisation, Peter was able to open his own practice, and complete the whole process himself. Over the years people have called into the practice, to enquire exactly what a Dental Prosthetist does, and Peter has always been happy to have a chat and explain the process. Landsborough Dental Prosthetist has always been a family run business. Peter’s wife Janet and their two daughters have over the years supported Peter by working in the practice at various times. During his time at Landsborough, Peter has seen a number of changes in his profession, notably an increase in the number of graduates and advances in technology, which have had an effect on the manufacture of dental prosthetics. What Peter enjoys about working in Landsborough, is that the town has retained its welcoming friendly atmosphere. “I have really appreciated the support of all my clients over the past twenty years, and look forward to continuing to do so for a few more years,” he said. By Lea Parkes The crew at Maple Street Meats in Maleny did a great job last week raising awareness and funds for ‘Dolly’s Dream Foundation’ that was set up by family and friends of Blair Howard and Jeremi Scott Dolly Everett. with the blueberry pork sausages The foundation is in remembrance of 14-year-old Dolly, a victim of bullying who took her own life, and the foundation plans to facilitate positive changes in other young lives. Keeping in mind that blue was Dolly’s favourite colour, the butchers decided to add some tasty blueberry pork sausages for sale last Friday and, through the combination of 45 kilograms of the sausages sold and donations from their customers, they raised over $2,500. Council backs planning scheme at Palmview

Sunshine Coast Council has refused an application to for a petrol station and fast food outlet on Frizzo Road at Palmview. As reported in GC&M News in March last year, the Material Change of Use application for 141 Frizzo Road, which is just to the north of the Aussie World complex and only 500m from the existing Aussie World Garage, aimed to change the current rural zoning use to allow for the construction of a service centre. In response, six properly made submissions were received, all against the proposal, including a petition with 1,125 signatures. The owner of the Aussie World Garage, Steven Amos, submitted a 13 page objection through a legal firm, whilst John Paini, Director of Timevale Pty Ltd, owners of Aussie World, made a six page submission outlining their opposition to the application. In a pre-lodgement meeting with a council officer, significant issues and concerns were raised resulting from the nature, scale and location of the proposed development.

New units to expand Beerwah The Beerwah property market continues to grow with two development applications being submitted to Sunshine Coast Council recently for a total of 36 new units. An application (MCU17/2161) for 28 units at the corner of Peachester Road and Bilenda Close, Beerwah has been lodged on behalf of the developers, Property FYI Pty Ltd. Although the land is zoned medium density residential and allows for 30-50 dwellings per hectare, a report lodged with the application acknowledges that the planned density (65 dwellings per hectare) will exceed what the planning scheme allows. However, the proponent argues that this is not a problem. It states: “...the design enables all technical aspects from the relevant codes to be achieved without the need for relaxations despite the density. Overall, the design and density satisfies the performance outcome rather than the acceptable outcome and is therefore capable of approval as submitted. We note similar rationale has been applied on other developments in the Sunshine Coast.” The proposed units are separated into five blocks, with each unit comprising of three bedrooms over two storeys. Each unit will be 126.5m2 in area excluding the ground level private open space area which has an area of 27.5m2. Recreational facilities including seating, barbeque area, play area and a pergola are provided within two communal open space areas. The second application (MCU17/2164) is to turn

a 1,824sq.m single house residential lot at 11 Swan Street, into eight medium density units, each being three bedrooms and two storeys. The use is consistent with the planning scheme zoning, with the development report stating the site is suitable for the development and the establishment of multiple dwelling units is a consistent use in the medium density residential zone. Each townhouse will have the living areas primarily on the ground floor and bedrooms on the upper floor. Each has a single garage, external patio area (partly-roofed), separate path to outdoor areas and is landscaped. Each unit has access to a grassed outdoor area and a small roofed balcony on the upper floor. The equivalent dwelling density is noted as being 59, which is greater than what is allowable under the town planning scheme. However, a consultant’s report notes that “...the density does not represent an overdevelopment of the site to the extent that other code requirements cannot be met” and that Council should give consideration to “the location of the development in terms of access and proximity to all urban services, including intercity rail transport and connecting bus services to the regional business centres of the Sunshine Coast.”

Hazel celebrates special birthday Local centurion Hazel McDermott celebrated her 103rd birthday on Friday January 5 at Blue Care Maleny Erowal surrounded by family, friends and the Blue Care team. To celebrate this important milestone, the team at Blue Care Maleny Erowal organised a special party for Hazel where she was serenaded by party guests and enjoyed a birthday pavlova. Clinical Nurse Josephine Robertson said they were delighted to celebrate this milestone with Hazel, who is a popular resident and well-known for her smile, great sense of fun and humour. “Currently our oldest resident, Hazel joined Maleny Erowal over five years ago and since then has loved to be involved in all activities,” said Josephine.

Landholder Environment Grants open

Private rural landholders can apply for assistance to undertake on-the-ground projects to protect and enhance the region’s environmental values, with Sunshine Coast Council’s Landholder Environment Grants now open. Community and Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said rural landholders would be able to apply for a range of projects to undertake environmental works on their private property. “Priority will be given to projects with high ecological value and that have good

landowner co-contribution,” Cr McKay said. “Landholders can apply for assistance to carry out natural resource management activities such as fencing to restrict stock access to significant areas of native vegetation, wetlands or waterways. “The grant can also be used for controlling environmental weeds to rehabilitate native vegetation, modifying fencing to make it more wildlife friendly and to reduce sediment loss on farms.” Applicants are encouraged to read the Landholder Environment Grant Guidelines prior to submitting an Expression of Interest, which close on Monday February 26. In our last edition of GC&M News we brought you the news of how pleased the Landsborough Loggers Cricket Club was to receive their new Hustler zero turn mower. Sadly for the club, by the time the paper had been printed and delivered to readers the club’s shed on Tunnel Ridge Road at Landsborough had been burgled and the mower, along with other ground maintenance equipment, had been stolen. Around 8.30am on Sunday December 17 a witness saw a ute and a car at the skate park and the mower being loaded into the ute. Not surprisingly, the Club and their volunteers are devastated that a small not for profit club has been targeted in this way. They are asking the local community to get behind them to raise the funds to replace the mower so they can continue to do the work required to maintain the oval and surrounds. Donations from $5 can be made via the Go Fund Me site and, as one of the club members said to me: “If a whole bunch of locals could chuck in five bucks it wouldn’t take too long to get to the $7,000 target.” They have set up a ‘Go Fund Me page’ which you can access via the Landsborough Loggers Cricket Club Facebook page. Welcome to 2018 - I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year period. For me, this new year marks four years since I started at Beerwah Station which seems incredible, but as the saying goes, time flies... While I wouldn’t go quite so far as to say policing is always ‘fun’ the opportunities I get to meet and talk to a range of community groups and the local school students certainly makes the work a lot more enjoyable, and I am looking forward to meeting more of you this year. Back to school - It’s a good time to remind everyone that back to school means school zones are back in effect. School zone speed limits are enforceable speed limits and motorists can expect an increased police presence around schools particularly at drop off and pick up time. Please ensure you slow down, and pay extra attention to pedestrian activity in these areas, a split second of inattention can have devastating consequences. Be courteous to other drivers and ensure that you comply with parking and turning signage, the signs are there to ensure everyone’s safety. An extra reminder to locals travelling around Landsborough school where the school zone limits are in place all day on school days due to the need to access their oval. Stay wider of the rider - You may have noticed a number of new signs on our local roads reminding you to be on the lookout for bicycles and some that even indicate a lower speed when cyclists are present. There are some specific road rules about driving past cyclists and the distance that you need to give them. The rules state that to pass a cyclist where the speed limit is 60km/h or under, then you must give them at least a metre, and for roads where the limit is above 60km/h, you must give them one and a half metres. To do this you are allowed to cross unbroken centre lines, lane lines and painted traffic islands if it is safe to do so. Cyclists are generally required to comply with the same road rules as cars and are to keep as far left as practical and not ride more than two abreast unless overtaking other riders.

Glasshouse Country View Club met for its first gathering of the year at The Lookout Cafe where we combined this with a celebration of the life of our good friend and Secretary Maree Rau who died on December 22, 2017. A large number of our members attended and several emotional tributes were given with reflections of many happy memories too. The Apex Maleny Club kindly allows the Maleny Trail Riders Club use of their shed and its facilities for their monthly meetings, free of charge. In appreciation of the Apex Club’s generosity and as an offer of good faith and appreciation, the Maleny Trail Riders Club made a $500 donation to Apex for them to provide to an organisation of their choice. The Maleny Trail Riders Club raises money through their Maleny Trail Ride which is held every two years (the next ride is scheduled for this September). Volunteers of the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre celebrated their achievements and friendships at their annual celebratory lunch in December, where they looked back over the year and shared some of their experiences. Some of the highlights from 2017 were the Community Barbeques, Clothes Swap, starting the Glasshouse Country Boomerang Bags group, the group’s expansion into recycling-themed workshops making journals and wax wraps, Reconciliation Week events, Mental Wellness Day, White Ribbon Week with a street stall and Community Conversation on Domestic Violence, and hosting the first Glass House Mountains Community Christmas Party. A big thankyou goes to all the wonderful volunteers of the centre and all those who supported the centre during last year. There are plenty of opportunities to join in the fun during 2018 by volunteering. People can be part of community events, projects, office roles and coordinating groups. Locals serving locals for more than 30 years RangeCare, formally Blackall Range Care Group, has been serving locals along the Blackall Range for more than 30 years. Established in 1986 as the Montville Care Group, RangeCare was the brainchild of local doctor, Dr Margaret Griffiths, who noticed that sometimes people in the community didn’t necessary need a doctor or a nurse, but rather someone to offer care and support, whether that be through a chat on the telephone or to accompany them to an appointment. Responding to this need, Dr Griffiths rallied a team of local volunteers to establish the Montville Care Group Committee. The aims and objectives of the group were widely debated during their first meeting back in September 1986, however general agreement was reached that the Montville Care Group’s principal purpose was “to assist people in maintaining their independence as far as possible and to assist families in times of crises”. With this purpose in mind, the group set about to meet their community’s need by offering a range of support services including: telephone calls to people living alone; a lawn maintenance and ‘odd jobs’ service; a transport service with volunteer drivers to get residents to and from medical appointments and shopping trips; a support group for people needing special care and support; and a meals on wheels service. Later the group also employed a part-time registered nurse to provide essential nursing services. And since then little has changed. The name may have changed – now RangeCare instead of Montville Care Group; the organisation’s size may have changed –

RangeCare now serves more than 1,200 locals utilising a team of more than 80 employees and 180 volunteers; and the way RangeCare is funded has dramatically changed; but RangeCare’s strong commitment to supporting people to live an independent life has not. RangeCare’s CEO, Jenny McCafferty, believes strongly that RangeCare has become part of the fabric of the Blackall Range community. “We’ve been serving this community for more than 30 years,” said Jenny. “We are 100% local and are always looking for ways we can work more efficiently because we know that every dollar saved is a dollar we can redirect back into our community’s care.” RangeCare offers the full range of in-home, respite and social support services for the elderly, people with a disability and anyone experiencing a life event that means they need a little extra support.

Late last year GC&M News caught up with Hinterland family support worker Suky Oliver who is really excited to be facilitating a brand new supported playgroup at Landsborough CWA Hall which kicks off this Thursday, January 18, from 9.30am-11.30am. Mooloolah Valley Playgroup

Little ones aged five years and under, along with their grown up loved ones, will be starting another vibrant year with Mooloolah Valley Playgroup from Wednesday January 24, 9.30-11am. The theme for craft, songs, stories and explorations for first term will be ‘What’s that sound?’ Mooloolah Valley Playgroup coordinator Natasha Odgers said: “It is the growth of the children and the friendships between the parents and carers that make Playgroup so special. Playgroup plays such a positive role for babies and young children during these particularly formative years. “We also have a wonderful Community Grandparent, Chris, who forms lovely bonds with the kids and is a great help. We are seeking more people to share this role of playing with kids, chatting with parents, food serving, setting up and packing up for children on a weekly or fortnightly basis. There are no age restrictions for this role,” Natasha said. The Mooloolah Valley Playgroup meets every Wednesday (except school holidays), 9.30am-11am at the Outside School Hours building (next to the pool), 48 Kings Road, Mooloolah Valley. Exciting sustainability goals for 2018 Centre Co-ordinator Ange Hardey and the team at Glass House Early Education Centre are excited to be launching into 2018 with a range of fantastic initiatives and goals focussed around maximising sustainability practices. Collectively the team have committed themselves to increasing their already impressive track record around incorporating recycling and reusing as a key focus of the Centre, and they are looking forward to engaging in even more projects that actively promote the importance of sustainability. Long term staff member Amanda Gurr has been designated as the Centre’s Sustainability Officer and she is looking forward to bringing new ideas and encouraging more natural educational spaces and experiences for the children. With so many opportunities to incorporate these goals into their everyday environment and help the teach the children (and their families) about the benefits of sustainable practices, Centre Coordinator Ange Hardey is clearly enthusiastic. “We are all really excited to have rediscovered our passion for sustainability and the environment. The children and their families respond really well to these initiatives and together our Centre community is energised to really kick some serious sustainability goals this year,” explains Ange. An important aspect of Amanda’s role as Sustainability Officer is to implement practical examples of sustainable practices that are incorporated into everyday Centre practice. The entire team is genuinely dedicated to improving sustainability not just providing token gestures and the hope is that this philosophy will have a flow on effect to the both the children and their

families which will contribute to an overall culture of sustainable awareness. The children are actively encouraged to get involved and 2018 will also see a whole range of new kid focussed projects and activities centred around core principles of recycling and reusing. Ange is also keen to acknowledge the importance of community support in helping reach their goals. Their ‘community callout’ initiatives have proven to be extremely successful and Ange and the team are very grateful of the ongoing support of donations and items to be reused that have been contributed. “The response to our community shout outs for items has been awesome! We’ve had people in the community see our requests for donations on facebook or in GC&M News that the kids can then reuse into play and craft items – and we’ve had people walk in from the street with generous donations which has been just great!” says Ange. Some of the initiatives already underway include a monthly ‘Green Day’ where the children are encouraged to wear green with a different sustainability focus message each month. Centre excursions during Vacation Care have included visits to environmental centres and the plan for 2018 is to increase these visits to be included as long day care / kindy children activities – the focus will also be to reach out to other sustainable local businesses and ventures. The Centre also accesses the community collaborations with Sunshine Coast Council which provide workshops on a diverse range of topics. 2018 is shaping up to be an exciting one at Glass House Early Education Centre. Early childhood is such a wonderful time and the

Smart meters – or 'advance meters' in Queensland – are on the agenda now for every household in the next few years. What is a 'smart meter'? Basically it’s an electronic grid connected meter that will be able to broadcast to a central power company point all your electricity use details. It broadcasts using microwave frequencies in the 2.4Ghz band like a WiFi modem in your home. However, it broadcasts in very short high frequency Ghz power bursts. These short bursts are off-the-scale by metering devices used to check them. They happen many times per minute – which means your household is being subjected to rapid fire high-powered EM radiation outputs radiating through the rooms nearest the meter. If it’s your bedroom wall or your children's you receive the radiation directly. Rural occupants are safer from these EM radiation bursts as there is no central broadcast point. Urban dwellers are not. Smart meters are presented as a 'green' saving device, with the glitter of ‘technological advancement’, ‘efficiency’ and ‘cost savings’. The truth is far from that. The problem is no government or authority has ever bothered to investigate whether or not the microwave radiofrequency (RF) exposures and high voltage transients are safe for humans or for the environment, and many indications now are that they are not. What if you don't want one? The Smart Meter Installation on the Australian Energy Regulator website states, "What if I do not consent to having a smart meter installed at my property? You can ask your retailer to disable the communications functions." It’s called a type 4A meter, one with its wireless capabilities disabled. You must convey your refusal in advance to your supplier. If you have taken this step, the new rule provides for you to be given a smart meter with wireless communications disabled. Richard Giles Conondale

Peachester NBN tower proposed

NBN wants to place a tower at the end of Coochin Street at Peachester. This tower is to replace the current local telecommunication exchange. How does one know if this will improve network services? It states that “one must be in line of sight of the tower”. Peachester is such a densely treed area with many hills and valleys. Can anyone explain to me how this tower will reach all the rural properties? Is there any guarantee that this will provide efficient, safe and reliable NBN to Peachester? Also, once one tower goes up what’s stopping more towers? Will we really be better off and at what cost? Are there better sustainable solutions? Christine Southall Peachester

Just like to give a shout out to Mrs Brown’s Cafe for the great effort they put in to the Kids’ Christmas Breakfast. I took my three grandchildren and they enjoyed the face painting, the balloon man and, of course, Father Christmas. The food was delicious and I'm sure other families felt the same. Looking back over the history since the formation of the Maleny & District Sport & Rec Club ten years ago, I am very proud to say I was a founding management member and now a Life Member along with John Brown and Mike Norman. MDSRC should be congratulated by one and all for what these volunteers have brought to the Maleny community in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council. The greatest achievement has been being part of the development of the Maleny Community Precinct as we sat on the Maleny Precinct Advisory Group along with council representatives: the Pattemore House development; walking trails; and the beautiful 18 hole golf course (by the end of the year) which is winning accolades from around Australia. This year the National Cross Country will be held primarily on the golf course. What a boost for Maleny! The MDSRC has taken out a lease from council on which the Beersheba Museum and MDSRC Clubhouse was built, and an area for the Maleny Audited circulation 11,925* *Circulations Audit Bureau. Liana Parks finished up at Glass House Mountains McDonalds on December 30, 2017. Clocking off at 11.30pm, she was the last original crew member on staff from the store opening in late 2013. She was 13 years and 4 months when she started. McDonalds has been a great place to work and it helped her learn quality assurance, hazard analysis, critical control points in food manufacturing, work health and safety, conflict resolution and customer service techniques. MDSRC is working on updating their business plan for the rest of their lease, and there will be more assets developed for the community to enjoy. There is lots of room still on the Precinct as the Aquatic Centre is not taking up their allocated area and Barung has yet to do anything on their allocated area. Unity Water has promised walking trails through their lease. I congratulate the MDSRC and their many members for their achievements not only on the Precinct but for helping so many clubs achieve their goals through grant writing assistance, sports awards night, and the Aussie Expo on Australia Day. It seems that someone is letting dogs out from private properties in Peachester, then calling the council to report the “roaming dog”. The end result is that the dog owner has to pay pound fees to get their dog back again. This has happened multiple times recently across Peachester, and appears to be malicious behaviour. If you live in Peachester, please keep an eye out in your neighbourhood and, if you see anyone letting a dog out of a yard, please take their details and call the police. It’s that time of the year again, just out of recovery mode after Christmas. Perhaps you, like many others, are adding tai chi to their list of resolutions, incorporating healthier lifestyles in the New Year. A spokesperson for the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Australia said: “There's lots of good medical evidence to suggest that this gentle meditative exercise can reduce stress and improve quality of life. In fact, a Harvard Medical School report lists tai chi as one of the five best exercises we can do. “As synthesized by Chinese monk Master Moy Lin-shin almost 48 years ago, Taoist Tai Chi is a sequence of 108 moves. Physically, Taoist Tai Chi is unique in the degree of stretching and turning found in each move. Though it is largely a series of external moves when we begin to learn, with continued practice, the benefits extend deeper and deeper and practitioners begin to understand why it is referred to as an ‘internal’ art of health. “Tai Chi teaches us how to concentrate, focus and be mindful. New dance facility in Beerwah

After operating for a number of years at the Glasshouse Christian College, Masterpiece Dance are taking the big step of opening their own facility right in the middle of Beerwah’s business centre in the complex that runs between Simpson and Turner Street, just up from the Beerwah Post Office. Business owner Sarah Kwarcianyi said she is really excited that they have been able to create two purpose-built studio spaces as well as a comfortable waiting area. The walls have been removed between the shops that previously operated in the location, and timber sprung floors have been installed and, over last weekend, a number of the ‘Masterpiece Family’ have also lent a hand with the painting. Sarah said the new facility means that while the kids are busy at their classes, the parents will be able to enjoy the convenience of a one minute walk to local shops, cafes, the library, and various parks. “The new location will help us expand and grow what we can offer the community, and we have put together a really comprehensive timetable which includes classes in ballet, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary dance and acrobatics with classes starting on Monday January 29,” she said. Sarah and her husband Lewis would also like to thank all of their Masterpiece family (about 200 children are enrolled this year), for all of their continued support and in particular the families who helped out doing painting and setting up in the heat last Saturday. Things2Do this Australia Day Country races this Australia Day?

For something a little different this Australia Day you might want to grab some mates and head out to Kilcoy for the Race Clubs Australia Day Races. Kilcoy is only about a forty minute drive from Beerwah or Maleny. The great fun day will include six gallop races, three trot races, mini trots, sprint races down the straight, as well as Australia Day fashions, cash prizes, the famous Kilcoy steak burgers and cold drinks. There are a number of options available on the day, including entry into the Trackside Pavilion costing $100 per person and including a fourhour lunch and beverages, reserved seating, race book and entry. Australian Film Festival

There was champagne last Saturday for a local couple who joined the Maleny Film Society, pushing its membership over the four hundred mark. As the Society gets bigger, so does its annual Australian Film Festival. These are some new elements for the coming Australia Day weekend: • A session on films made about our region by locals. Most of the film-makers will introduce their film. You will see some fascinating glimpses of the past, and perhaps even yourself. • A Q&A session called ‘Meet a Film Insider’ with distinguished guest, Max Cullen, who will also show two of his own short films. • A ‘festival hub’ where people can meet, relax and get refreshments. • A repeat screening of one feature on Sunday afternoon. • There will be four entertaining feature movies, each accompanied by a quality short film, a launch party on Friday and a film appreciation workshop on Sunday morning. Health &Wellbeing Healthy choices could prevent cancer The Cancer Council Queensland CEO, Chris McMillan, would like to remind Queenslanders that today, 74 people living in Queensland will be diagnosed with cancer. Sadly, around 25 of those cases could have been prevented. This year, Chris is urging Queenslanders to set goals that will improve their health and reduce their cancer risk by introducing simple lifestyle changes which can significantly benefit your health and wellbeing. 1. Improve your diet and limit alcohol – aim for five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit a day, limit sugar, saturated fat and salts, and keep hydrated with water. 2. Increase your physical activity – schedule in a jog or a 60 minute walk every day.

Severe storm clean-up nearing completion We all know that the severe storm cell that hit on Saturday December 9 impacted heavily in the Landsborough and Beerwah communities and the full extent of the damage was revealed in the days following. Council’s crews were out in force and directed to assist residents in the clean-up and collect kerb-side debris until the job of making things safe was done. Many in the community worked with council’s Arboricultural Services team over a period of weeks to make sure their homes and property were safe for their families. Council crews began focusing on Stage 2 of the clean up last week, with the removal of roadside debris from Old Gympie Road, Old Landsborough Road and other public areas. These extreme weather events will always test us all, so I’m very grateful for the greater flexibility and support shown between council, community organisations and the communities concerned. We will also reflect, review and learn as much as we can from what went well and what didn’t go well. We can always improve and do better through the lens of experience. I want to thank the residents for keeping me informed on what was happening for them and the council response staff for the many emails and communications required to make the best of a tough situation. In some situations I did have to intervene to make sure that council showed the bigger heart required on occasions like this and that council was doing everything it could to help. The good news is that we got there and I believe both council and community will be even better prepared in future. Well done to everyone involved, with a special mention to the emergency call out crews, council staff on the ground, volunteers both from service organisations or just good neighbours!

Noticeboard Home school travel discount expanded Home-educated students aged 15 years and over are set to gain access to student discounts on public transport from Monday January 22. Head of TransLink Matthew Longland said home-educated students who previously would have had to pay full adult fares once they turned 15, will soon enjoy a 50% student concession discount. “This will save families money, ensuring public transport remains a cost-effective travel option,” Mr Longland said. To obtain a student concession, home-school students will need to show their Home Education Unit Student Identification Card at the point of purchase. Students must also carry their student ID as proof of concession entitlement at all times when using public transport and show it to a driver or authorised person when asked. Glasshouse Country Orchid Society

Contributed by Jenny Kelly Welcome to a new year of orchid growing. Glasshouse Country Orchid Society held their Christmas party at The Beerwah Hideaway on December 10, which some of you may remember as being the day after that ferocious storm tore through the district. I don't know how they did it, but The Hideaway team were able to pull off a bit of a miracle to present us with a delicious meal, after only getting power restored an hour before we arrived. As we were a bit short on display space, members brought just the one plant for judging in the popular vote, and what plants they were. Beautiful Cattleyas, an amazing Bulbophylum lobbii, Brassia verracosa, and the pick of the bunch and Judges’ Choice was Theo Beenders Miltoniopsis Breathless 'Brilliant'. Lots of fun was had by all with everyone going home with at least one prize from the rolling raffle. We will kick off 2018 with a meeting at the Glasshouse Mountains RSL Hall on Thursday February 8. Medley results Contributed by Roger Bonhomme Trevor Brimelow (hcp11) made a welcome return to the winner's circle after recent illnesses when he took out last Wednesday's medley Stableford A grade with a fine 41 points. He pipped Andrew Betts (4) by a point. In B grade Richard Hatfield (16) also had 41, to beat big hitting Neale Head (14) on 38. Brian Morrissey (29) won C grade with 40 points. Ralph Draper (22) finished second on 38. NTP: 2 - Mal Bosnjak, 5 - Keven Grogan, 16 Jim Wells, 18 - Andrew Betts.

Temperatures nudged the 40 mark on Saturday, but players returned some excellent scores despite the uncomfortable conditions. Keith Davies (12) took out A grade with 43. Michael O'Rourke (11) finished second on 40. The round of the day went to Les Afflick (19) who scored an inspiring 46 points. He finished six points up on Geoff Broadstock (18). Contributed by Graeme Glover 2018 is to be an exciting year for the Maleny Bowls Club which is 80 years young. Much excitement is planned for all our members and visitors to keep the positives that have been developed by so many people over that time. When you take the opportunity to visit the club and see the names of members past and present, one has to be very thankful for their vision in helping to create a club that has a real community focus. While on the focus of community, here’s an invite to all to visit our stand at the communitybased Hinterland Aussie Day event at the Maleny Show Grounds. A big shoutout to the

organisers of this event, be there and check out what’s happening at the Bowls Club and other like organisations. Talk about a great start to the 2018 bowls season. The Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Ken Barker Despite the heat and the heavy lawns (a result of high cutting while they recuperate), it has already been an active New Year. On Thursday there was a wild game of golf croquet which saw Frances Harper and Ken Barker 8 just edge out Wendy Whitby and Donna Manning 7 in the closest possible result in a fourteen point game. A subsequent game between Donna and Wendy saw Wendy downing Donna 4-2. Ken and Frances played a 14 point association game which Ken won 14-5; but Frances had her revenge in another short version of association where, at the beginning of the game, all the clips are put to hoop 5 instead of hoop 1. She won this

arm wrestle of a game 5-3. All players are urged to get their eye in before pennants begin in March. This could be our big year. We need players for both the Bray (divisions 3 and 4) and Lochwood (divisions 1 and 2) to put their names on the board outside the clubhouse. There are also quite a few notices of interclub tournaments in the clubhouse. Enjoy 2018. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 2 for 2.30pm. Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan (BDS) originally qualified in Liverpool in the UK back in 2005. He gained two years experience with the UK’s National Health Service before spending four years in private practice in Ireland. He has a particular interest in and enthusiasm for dental implants; both to replace missing teeth and to retain those

annoying loose dentures. He believes that the huge leaps in technology during recent times have changed the level of treatment on offer. Finbarr also holds a post graduate certificate in cosmetic restorative dentistry (UK) which gives him the added expertise when restoring a beautiful smile.

Dr Shirly Atia Dr Shirly Atia completed her Dental Hygiene Degree in Canada and worked as a dental hygienist for seven years before completing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University in Cairns. She has completed her general practice residency in Queensland Health providing dental care to indigenous communities.

Dr Atia is extremely passionate about preventive dentistry but enjoys all areas of dentistry including fillings, crown and bridge, esthetic dentistry and root canals. Shirly ensures all her patients receive the best possible treatment and is committed to providing high quality dentistry in a warm, gentle and welcoming environment.

Dr Raj Kengaiha Dr Raj Kengaiha was originally educated in India and completed his Dental Degree at the prestigious Bangalore University in 1997, followed by working busy dental practices in India before moving with his family to Australia in 2013. Although interested in all aspects of dentistry, Dr. Kengaiha has particular passions for endodontic (root canal treatment)

and orthodontic (braces). He is doing additional training in Orthodontics, participating in a Mini Residency which formed part of his Excellence of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics (EODO) training. Raj has recently gained accreditation to provide Fastbraces orthodontic treatment – both simple and advanced.
