FROM THE EDITOR LAST week I was watching an English television talk show and the presenter mentioned “COVID keepers”. He explained that these were the new approaches to life you had taken up since the pandemic rocked our world and that you plan to continue. I started thinking about how much things have changed for us at GC&M News. The most significant change was putting out an edition every fortnight instead of weekly. I wanted to let you all know that this is something that we will be keeping. Salon Sessions connect women through shared stories and music

By Sonia Isaacs Clark MALENY country music artist Gemma Kirby has launched a brand-new creative project - Salon Sessions - that she hopes will connect, engage and inspire women in rural communities. Through a series of intimately set events, the sessions will build connections and celebrate the extraordinary resilience of women through shared stories and music. Releasing her first album in 2015, Gemma went on to tour with Adam Brand in 2017 before taking a few years off to raise her family. Her new album, also called ‘Salon Sessions’ (volume one), heralds her return to the recording studios with a new EP featuring six “girl power” cover tracks showcasing both Gemma’s considerable talent and some of the most inspiring women in the music industry today, including Rachel Platten, The McClymonts and Katy Perry. Gemma said she was pleased she was able to launch the first sold out concert at The Orangery Maleny to coincide with International Women’s Day this year. She said the project had evolved

over the past three years, when she also juggled the balancing act of motherhood and family commitments along with her own personal passions as an artist. Gemma said she found that after having children she wanted to socialise with other women but didn’t want to hang out at the local pubs. Realising that most rural towns had a salon, this ignited the idea to invite women to connect at their local salons. “I wanted to initially invite women to come together in a safe and nurturing environment and create an atmosphere that would inspire, impact and support each other,” Gemma said. “As we evolved with the idea, we decided to create podcasts featuring extraordinary women’s stories from real everyday women throughout Australia.” To date, Gemma and her all-women team of collaborators have recorded six local women’s stories that were captured in salons across Maleny. Gemma said one of the great aspects of the podcasts was that most of these women hadn’t spoken in this type of

production environment before but were happy to share their stories, highlighting their own personal challenges and the issues they faced as a way of supporting others in a real and authentic way. “You don’t know someone’s journey until you walk with them, and some of these women I’ve known for a long time, but it’s given me the opportunity to really reﬂect on how we can better connect with others and be supportive,” Gemma said. “As women we should try to straighten each other’s crowns and not be quick to judge.” Along with inviting likeminded women to enjoy a concert packed with inspiring girl power anthems, the Salon Sessions will feature the opportunity to connect in a fun and empowering environment with wine, nibbles, products and pampering, and will include excerpts from the specially created podcast series of women’s interviews. Gemma plans to tour the Salon Sessions interstate with her family. She aims to have ﬁve salon-based shows

Maleny women say enough to rape culture ON International Women’s Day, held on Monday, March 8, a group of women and men gathered in Maleny to speak out against the culture of male sexual violence against women and girls in Australia. One of the organisers, Gillian Pechey, said that over recent weeks group members had witnessed testimonies about the unacceptable behaviour in Australian schools, workplaces and society at large and even federal Parliament. Gillian said many in the community were increasingly concerned and outraged, so they decided to come together as an informal group of concerned Maleny community members to show solidarity to those who had suﬀered injustice and voice their objection to rape culture by saying ‘enough is enough’.

Mooloolah to Landsborough access cut Sunshine Coast Council has advised that Tunnel Ridge Road will be closed from next Monday, March 22 for road maintenance works. As part of Australian Government funding of its Black Spot Program, a stretch of Tunnel Ridge Road between Rose and Kowald Roads will be closed to all traﬀic until early May (weather and construction conditions permitting) during the road works. The council said the road works were necessary to widen and rehabilitate the stretch of Tunnel Ridge Road for safety reasons. The road is a convenient short-cut used by many locals travelling between Landsborough and Mooloolah. The temporary road closure means that everyone, including those living on Tunnel Ridge Road, will be forced to make the longer trip via Mooloolah Connection Road and along Steve Irwin Way, adding considerable time to school runs, work commutes, shopping trips and other reasons why Tunnel Ridge Road is a vital link for the area. The works will involve the removal of roadside hazards, installation of safety barriers and widening of the carriageway. Some parts will be widened to 8m,

meaning trees and habitat will be cleared and lost. The council said it would plant trees elsewhere, although it did not specify where, to oﬀset the clearing as part of its stated “commitment to environmental sustainability”. GC&M News asked local Tunnel Ridge Road users via our Facebook page what they thought of council’s plans. Aaron Miller isn’t convinced by the end date. “Early May haha that’s a good one”. “Thanks! It’s going to be a pain” Kylie Gurdler wrote. Emma Liesegang will have extra travel: “Will have to go the long way to Palmwoods now.” Paul Handley suggested a better use for the money. “How about putting in a bike lane on Old Gympie Road between Landsborough and Beerwah.” Wayne Spedding thinks the council needs to look at other parts of the road. “I cannot believe this. Head closer to the Mooloolah end and there is that terrible corner where most accidents happen. Lives have been lost. Why don’t they straighten that bend out a bit and there are 2 bends near each other [that are] very dangerous for the sightseeing tourists that don’t know the road. I have

One of the participating artists, jewellery maker and photographer Melanie Augustin, said she particularly liked being able to share the “how and where” things are made with visitors to her studio. “I’m very interested in the process of things myself and I think people are genuinely curious about what goes into the creation of jewellery and art,” Melanie said.

Businesses feel abandoned by ANZ THE recent closure of the Beerwah ANZ branch has distressed and disappointed many locals. However, a subsequent decision by ANZ may have made the situation worse, particularly for local business operators. A large piece of plywood now covers a hole in the wall where the automatic teller machine was located outside the bank’s former Simpson Street location. The disappearance of the ATM on February 24 has frustrated ANZ customers who had previously been advised that a Smart ATM would be kept in Beerwah after the closure of the branch. A Smart ATM is vital for local businesses in the absence of a physical branch as it offers a range of functions including the ability to deposit cash and cheques as well as services offered by standard ATMs such as withdrawals, transferring funds and changing PINs. Local residents and businesses are now forced to travel to Woodford, Caloundra, Nambour or Morayfield to visit an actual branch or find a Smart ATM, or Maleny for the standard ATM outside the Supa IGA. An ANZ spokesperson told GC&M News that while ANZ was unable to secure a lease for the Smart ATM at the branch site, the bank had been looking

for a new site with adequate space and street frontage since August last year. The bank was hopeful of reaching a satisfactory outcome, the spokesperson said. To help the ANZ find a suitable site, the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce has been canvassing members and building owners, and posted a message on its Facebook page. The Facebook post said: “Any businesses in Beerwah interested in having the ANZ Smart ATM relocated to their premises need to contact: ANZ Leasing Team 03 8655 0087 or Tammy Tao on tammy.tao@anz.com.” In the meantime, locals are venting their anger on local social media pages. Some of the comments include: • “Are they serious?!?!? So now there’s no atm in Simpson street at all!” (Brooke Murray). • “It’s really sad so many local businesses use ANZ and now have no way of depositing the cheques that do still come to them. With some other banks you can use the post office or even their apps. ANZ has sadly fallen behind in offering alternatives to face to face banking and will lose many customers. Customer loyalty means nothing to big corporations anymore.” (Ann Goodrich).

Women challenging the status quo in forest management HQPLANTATIONS is one of Australia’s largest forest growers and one of the many businesses that celebrated the achievements of female staff as part of International Women’s Day last week. Chief executive officer Jeremy Callachor said that the company employed women in a wide variety of professional roles including forest science, resources, planning, sales, finance, business systems, law, stakeholder engagement, land management, human resources, and business and technical support that historically was mostly done by men. “There are wonderful opportunities in forest management for women who enjoy varied, challenging work using innovative technology in office and natural environments,” Jeremy said. Many of the women at HQP assist with fire protection, with many accredited female firefighters working on the fire ground or in logistics roles. By day, Julie Langridge is HQP’s permit administration officer at the company’s Beerburrum office. Julie ensures that permit applications from members of the public and organised groups to undertake activities in the plantation are assessed in accordance with HQP’s key criteria for sustainable forest plantation management.

However, when there’s a fire Julie switches to crew leader mode, grabs her kit bag and fires up one of the Beerburrum plantation’s 3,500L Isuzu 4WD dual cab fire tankers to lead an accredited firefighting crew of up to five to the fire ground. “I‘ve worked for HQP for 10 years and have lived in the area most of my life, so protecting our plantations and my local community from fire is important to me,” Julie said. “On the fire ground there is no gender distinction. We are all equal contributors. We work together as a team and look out for each other’s safety, and everyone respects the chain of command, which is critical when

you’re a crew leader,” she said. With 50-60 fires a year on average in the Beerburrum plantation, largely caused by torched cars, arson and campfires, firefighting certainly keeps Julie and the company’s other accredited firefighters busy. “The great people I work with, getting out into the field and knowing my contribution is valued by HQP and the community are the best things about my job,” Julie said. “I’d recommend this kind of work to any woman who likes working outdoors. The gender balance in forest management is changing and women are encouraged and supported.”

More housing on way for Glass House A new subdivision application has been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council to turn a horse paddock in Glass House Mountains into a 33-lot housing estate. The 2.4ha site, owned by Total Island Time Pty Ltd, is located at 19 Coonowrin Road, opposite the corner of Coonowrin Road and Gardner Street, and is currently used as a paddock for rescue horses. It is adjacent to a 24-lot housing development approved in 2019 where many Glass House Mountains residents already reside. The land is zoned as medium density residential, so the proposal is within what the planning scheme allows, providing the opportunity for families to purchase low-rise dwellings on blocks from 300411m2 in size. Medium density zoning requires the blocks to be a minimum 300m2. The application report states that the proposed subdivision provides “… 33 small residential allotments which provide for small lot houses and potentially some dual occupancy product”. This means that some lots could be suitable for duplextype developments. The plans show all lots on the Coonowrin Road side of the block, with a large ﬂood-prone area towards the creek maintained as open space. There will not be a direct access road onto Coonowrin Road as the estate will be accessed via Trilogy Lane, which is an adjoining internal road in the existing housing development. Frontage works to Coonowrin Road will include

a footpath extension, street trees and a 2m wide landscaped buﬀer. As the application is deemed code assessable, there will no public notiﬁcation or opportunity for

Senior Sergeant Brendan Davis

New boss at Beerwah Police Station By Lea Parkes LATE last year Senior Sergeant Brendan Davis joined the team at Beerwah Police Station. Last month he was officially named the new officer in charge (OIC). GC&M News recently had the opportunity to have an informal chat with Brendan and learn more about the man behind the title. After more than 20 years in the Queensland Police Service working predominately in regional Queensland, Brendan is clearly happy to be back in South East Queensland and part of a team of experienced local officers. Brendan describes Beerwah as a comparatively small station with 23 police officers as well as administration and ancillary staff, servicing quite a large geographic region that borders Woodford, Maleny, Palmwoods, Caloundra and Caboolture Police stations. Having grown up on the north side of Brisbane, Brendan’s first job in the force was at Caboolture, which he reckons was a great place to get started and learn the ropes. His career to date has seen him work in a range of roles including four years as a detective in Rockhampton, five years as the OIC in Mt Isa, as well as heading a tactical crime squad in Western Queensland, working for nearly four years in the railway squad based in Brisbane and as a duty officer for the Mackay district for several years.

After working fly-in fly-out in the Mackay role, Brendan said he was keen to get back home and resume living full-time with his police officer wife and their children, and to be closer to his ageing parents. While Brendan didn’t say that this role was his forever job, it was clear this was definitely a job he really wanted in a location that he wants to work in, and he is keen to make his mark on the role. He likes that while being in the heart of the Sunshine Coast the area is back from the hustle and bustle of the coast, and that the townships have retained their country town roots and strong sense of community. He said one of the strengths of the Beerwah Police Station’s team was that it was made up of many experienced officers, with quite a few who had worked in Beerwah for more than five years. This meant they had built up a great depth of knowledge of the local community and were invested in getting results. From his time as OIC in Mt Isa, Brendan said what he really enjoyed was working as part of a team and being able to work collaboratively to achieve outcomes. While he might be in the top job it isn’t all about him, he said. Brendan is supportive of the role of Neighbourhood Watch but after a long history in the area the local Neighbourhood Watch is not currently operational. Brendan said he understood it was difficult to get locals to become actively involved and take on committee responsibilities.

He is keen to ensure that Senior Constable Susan Lowndes will continue to undertake her community liaison function, including school visits, being involved in our local blue light events when they return and her regular communication columns with locals via Glasshouse Country & Maleny News. He is also looking forward to the upcoming Coﬀee with a Cop, organised for 9am on Tuesday, March 30 at Mrs Brown’s Expresso at Beerwah Village, to give locals a chance to meet him. Of course, you will need to buy your own coﬀee and follow all of the COVID safe requirements at the event.

New era for Maleny Show personalities AT the beginning of 2020 the Maleny Show Society had decided to make some changes to its traditional approach to the Maleny Show Personality competition. Instead of holding an annual show ball on the Saturday evening a fortnight before the show, they decided to hold a high tea in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the pandemic meant the new style of event didn’t happen last year. The show society is keen to have the first of these events go ahead this year and it will be held at The Orangery Maleny on Saturday, May 15. Show Personality coordinator Helen Gilmour-Walsh said that while she believed the community’s passion for the country show and rural industries was strong, it was time to celebrate these core values by embracing a more inclusive approach to the event. “Being part of the Show Personality is a great way to get involved in our local community as well as getting involved in the show on May 28-29 by presenting prizes, sashing winning livestock, being in the grand parade, being photographed by the local media and generally being in the public eye,” Helen said. “Each year I have really enjoyed seeing the effect the experience has had on past participants. It has been great for their self-confidence as well as the sense of pride that comes from contributing back to the community. “This year the categories have been expanded. While there are still categories for female-only between 12–17 years and 18–28 years, they have also expanded to include a category for women 29 years and over as well as having a stronger focus on the categories for the blokes,” Helen said. Many changes will be required to host the show to ensure the event is COVID safe, so the reduced time frames mean there will not be a charity category this year. Those that attend the afternoon tea event will have the opportunity to cast a vote for their favourite entrant on the afternoon. As this is the first year with this format the committee is keen to see it as a celebration of the event’s history. It has put a call out for historic photos from previous events to be used as part of a display/presentation.

YOU may have heard of the parkrun phenomenon taking the country by storm but have you heard of barkrun? On Saturday, February 27, the team behind the weekly Maleny Trail parkrun launched the inaugural barkrun event with around 20 furry friends jogging along with their owners to complete the scenic 5km Maleny trail. Event director Jo Turner said barkrun was an opportunity to encourage more people to get outside and exercise with their animals, while enjoying the comradeship of a parkrun event. “On the morning we had 121 runners and 20 dogs attend, which was awesome,” Jo said. “Everybody loved it. Basically it’s the same as parkrun with more promotion to encourage bringing your dog along to exercise.” Jo said she was keen to encourage people to bring their dogs to the weekly parkrun but said owners needed to be mindful that it was always a social event and a 5km commitment, so owners needed to ensure their pet was comfortable to attend. Supporting local carers Margaret Thompson knows firsthand how important accessing support can be for a carer. “Caring for a loved one with dementia has been one of the most challenging times of my life and I feel so fortunate to live in an area where support is available.” Last year Margaret contacted Wellways Carer Gateway for some extra help in her caring role. “It took one phone call to Wellways Carer Gateway for a plan to be put in place. I was able to access emergency respite so that I could take a well needed break with the reassurance of knowing that my loved one would be cared for.” Carer Gateway gives carers like Margaret access to a range of free local services and supports to help them in their caring role. Jacqueline Murray who is the Community Engagement Coordinator with Wellways Carer Gateway said that carers don’t always realise they can access free, local services and supports to help them support their loved ones. “Support does exist and is only a phone call away,” she said. BreastScreen Queensland: a free service led by women for women

WITH International Women’s Day celebrated earlier this month, BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast, a service led by women for women, would like to take the opportunity to remind women of the vital importance of regular breast cancer screening. BreastScreen will be oﬀering its mobile service at the Maleny Hospital from April 21-May 13. If you would like to book well ahead, the mobile service will return to Beerwah Community Hall at the end of the year from November 11-December 10. Dr Alison Roper, medical director of BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast, said women aged between 50 and 74 years were strongly encouraged

to have a breast screen every two years. However, less than 55 per cent of women in this age group living in the region have a regular breast screen. “Regular breast cancer screening is the best way to detect breast cancer early, increasing treatment options and saving lives,” Dr Roper said. BreastScreen Queensland provides a free, high quality service for all eligible women aged over 40 at six permanent sites across the region including Nambour and Caloundra, as well as a mobile service. The mobile screening service is wheelchair accessible with appointments available from 7.30am. To make an appointment call 13 20 50 or visit www.breastscreen.qld.gov.au. A doctor’s referral is not needed.

Hinterland Market Trail taking shape MARKET coordinators from across the hinterland have started working together to create a dedicated Hinterland Market Trail. To date, representatives of seven established markets in Beerwah, Landsborough, Maleny, Mapleton, Montville, Mooloolah and Witta have gathered to discuss this exciting collective initiative. Deb Ives, from Beerwah Tower Green Markets, said there were several beneﬁts to creating a Hinterland Market Trail, including a stronger platform to boost local and upcoming producers and makers, increased capacity for patronage, local community engagement and greater economic development opportunities for our region.

“By coming together at events like network gatherings, we’ve connected over common values and shared experiences, and we were keen to explore ways we could unite to support each other,” Deb said. “With seven wonderful, uniquely diﬀerent markets running regularly throughout the hinterland it was inevitable that dates would overlap. We soon realised this could be turned into an advantage by working together as a collective.” Over the coming months, the group will focus on deﬁning objectives, and establishing a collaborative brand and presence before launching the Hinterland Market Trail. Outstanding success with Youth of the Year THE Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club recently judged the local Lions Australia Youth of the Year competition, with six Maleny State High School students answering two impromptu questions and presenting a five-minute prepared speech at a special annual night at The Orangery Maleny.

Flynn Scriven with Tricia Jackson and Nick Harrison, the chairman of the judges Initial personal interviews were held a few days before the event at Maleny RSL, where the candidates were allocated 70% of the points in the competition, particularly related to service to their school and wider community. Club president Helen Johnston declared it “an outstanding success”. “Any one of these young people would have been excellent club representatives at the zone final held at Montville,” Helen said. “They presented a united front during the competition and supported each other throughout the interview and speaking process.

“They were absolutely lovely young people who represented their school and families exceptionally well,” she said. Flynn Scriven won the Roger Jackson Public Speaking Award with his well-prepared speech on virtual intelligence. Rhoen Kennedy, who spoke on a very personal topic, the impact of social media on mental health, won the $1,000 Roger Jackson Memorial Bursary for the overall winner of the club Youth of the Year. Following the local awards, Rhoen Kennedy, representing the Maleny Blackall Range club, and Cappi Osborne, representing Beewah Lions Club, took part in the zone finals of the Lions Youth of the Year program, hosted by the Lions Club of Blackall Range at Montville on March 7. As well as winning the public speaking section of the competition, Rhoen was declared the overall winner. Rhoen will now compete in the district finals to be held in Wamuran in mid-March.

What’s happening at Morris House Contributed by Ann Husband

SERVICES at Morris House Neighbourhood Centre are all back to normal, with added precautions for COVID-19 safety in place including attention to contact details, social distancing and hand hygiene. Everyone has been following the extra safety measures with no complaints, which is really appreciated by everyone involved with the centre. People may have noticed that the access ramp at Morris House has been out of action for some time now. This was due to deciding how best to repair or rebuild the ramp, as well as allowing time to apply for grants to help complete the work. We are pleased to advise that we have now received two grants from Sunshine Coast Council to help pay for the repair. One grant was a COVID-19 grant and the other a grant from Cr Baberowski’s discretionary funds. The good news is that repairs will commence on Monday, March 29. Due to the repair schedule, Morris House will be closed from March 29 and during the lead up to Easter. There will also be no Orange Sky Laundry during this time. We will reopen on Tuesday, April 6. We’re looking forward to the new ramp that will have a wider doorway for bigger wheelchairs and prams, and will improve community access to our centre. Sincere thanks to Sunshine Coast Council for awarding us these grants so the work can be done. Wishing you all a happy Easter from all of us at Morris House.

The next theme will be about reptiles and amphibians, which is apt as the resident carpet pythons of the forest have been on display lately, regularly sunning themselves in conspicuous places for all to see. Also, due to the recent rains, the forest has been echoing with the croaks, grunts, burps and trills of local frogs, which accompany the familiar bird chorus.

These early autumn days have the tracks in the Scenic Reserve dotted with colourful fruits from the native trees. There are the bright yellows and oranges of the banana and zig-zag vines, pinks from the piccabeen palm seeds, purple from the mature white beech and red of the large ‘apples’ from a rainforest lilly pilly. The zig-zag vine, with its distinctive double-barrelled pods and shiny leaves, plays host to four barred swallowtails and pale triangle butterﬂies. The vine is named Melodorum leichhardtii for the ill-fated early Queensland explorer Ludwig Leichhardt and the tangy ﬂesh of the pods are a bush tucker. Glass House groups clean up in latest grants round MEMBER for Glass House Andrew Powell announced a total of $214,788 in grants to the Glass House electorate in round 106 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) – the highest amount it has received in more than three years. The GCBF provides sizeable grants to Queensland not-for-profit community organisations with revenue sourced from gaming taxes. ZONTA Club of Blackall Range hosted its annual Dusk on the Deck event at the Maleny Community Centre on International Women’s Day, Monday March 8. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Zonta Woman of Achievement Award 2021 to Val France, who was also presented with a Zonta rose. Val is a tireless community volunteer and passionate advocate for social justice, raising awareness around domestic and family violence issues. Club president Ann Koenig said that 2021 marked the sixth Dusk on the Deck event. This year it was held in the veranda room to accommodate 60 guests and members, with entertainment from Sweet Chilli, a wonderful all-female choir, and generous support from local sponsors. On behalf of the club, Ann said she was pleased that Val had received the award. Val was a wonderful advocate and inspiration for women in the local community through her involvement in a number of community groups and services, Ann said. Val’s involvement included initiating the combined services group Speak Up Now - Stop Domestic and Family Violence, her work as a lawyer at Suncoast Community Legal Service and her active hands-on volunteer work in many groups around Maleny and the Blackall Range, including the Maleny Community Centre, Maleny Film Society, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and as a past president of the local Quota club.

“Not only is Val passionate about the prevention of domestic and family violence, she brings this passion as well as enormous energy to whatever she undertakes,” Ann said. “It is a privilege to work beside and with her and she is a most worthy recipient of the Zonta Woman of Achievement Award for 2021.” Val said she was absolutely gobsmacked to receive the award and was sure she had sat there with her mouth open in disbelief when her name was announced. “It was totally unexpected and I’m sure there are many other people in our community who are more deserving than me, but it was very nice to be acknowledged,” Val said. “It was a lovely event and wonderful to have so many people come up afterwards and wish me well throughout the evening.” Val said she found it easy to volunteer her time as she genuinely loved talking with people, networking and meeting others. Since moving to Montville to “semi retire” more than seven years ago, Val said she had always enjoyed helping and being involved with her local community groups and organisations. She said working to prevent domestic and family violence had been a passion of hers for well over 20 years and it still energised her today. She looks forward to continuing her work with Speak Up Now - Stop Domestic and Family Violence with some exciting initiatives to help raise community awareness currently under way. MICK Procter’s letter in GC&M News (February 16) takes a humorous dig at the authorities responsible for the construction work at the intersection of Old Gympie and Peachester roads at Beerwah but makes some incorrect assertions. The location of power poles is the responsibility of Energex, not the contractor doing the roadworks. Being currently involved with Energex for the relocation of a power pole, I know that it is a drawn-out process due to the heavy workload Energex has at present. No doubt the contractor was liaising with Energex to relocate that pole. The intersection works are being performed to improve the safety of children and parents crossing two roads to get to and from school. Traffic engineers have concluded that traffic lights are the most effective solution for traffic flow and the safety of pedestrians. Anyone who thinks roundabouts are the answer should try driving through the two big roundabouts on Caloundra Road at peak traffic times. Ray Sanderson Glass House Mountains

WELL it’s pleasing to see the article in GC&M News (March 2) that the long-awaited Roys Road upgrade is ﬁnally under way. I also see that our pollies have taken yet another photo opportunity to brag about how wonderful they are for doing nothing more than their job. I agree that this road, when completed, will be good for the people from Caloundra/Aura who travel to work in Brisbane, by providing an alternative way to access the Bruce Highway and take a load oﬀ the already inadequate Caloundra Road, and will also provide

an alternative route for the Glass House/Beerwah residents who travel to Caloundra to work or for leisure activities. However, I can’t help but notice we are getting short-changed yet again, as they are only building a two-lane road with one lane in each direction. They are also telling us this road will carry 22,000 vehicles each day. Clearly Minister Bailey has learnt nothing from history, because I would have thought that 22,000 vehicles now will very quickly become 50,000 vehicles each day, and their new two-lane road will become totally inadequate in a very short space of time. When will these people stop thinking about the short four-year term most of them are in oﬀice and start thinking 40 years ahead. HOMELESSNESS is often an invisible issue. People will couch-surf, live in a caravan, in a friend’s shed or their car before people notice. To put it bluntly, our society, on the whole, doesn’t really care. Most of us are just trying to survive ourselves. However, homelessness is now becoming a middle-class problem, so we are starting to take notice. Our laws, our politics, our economics only serve those at the top. Middleclass Australia is starting to realise that those at the top don’t actually care about you. It’s time to change who you vote for. It’s time to force a change to laws by challenging them. It’s time to bring someone into your home (Australians

have 8-14 million spare bedrooms on any given night). It’s time to open our hearts. To love. To come to terms with the fact that anyone – even you – could become jobless and homeless. Life is on a thread and money is not the panacea we think it is. Let’s get through this crisis with our humanity intact. Loneliness will be our next pandemic. Let’s deal with both problems at once. Clean Up Australia 2021

OUR registered site for Clean Up Australia Day at Roys Road and Bells Creek Road happened again this year. Remondis supplied us with a huge bin, which we did not think we could fill. For three hours on Sunday morning, volunteers set out in hot, humid conditions and wet and muddy ground after recent rain, but everybody pitched in picking up rubbish in the scrub and on the roadside. Our team managed to fill the large bin and collect 40-45 tyres that we found in the bush. Volunteer numbers were down this year but the amount of rubbish we collected was still up there. We do this year after year and were hoping we were getting on top of it but we’re not so sure we are. We really need people to be more aware of our environment and the effect it will have in later years. This year we had another group join

Library transformation JUST like the Richmond birdwing butterﬂy found in the local hinterland area, the Peachester State School library has transformed from a humble beginning into the beautiful space it is today. The building contractors started work in late November and had the library ﬁnished ready for the 2021 school year. The new and improved library is ready to spread its wings and embrace everyone who enters the clean, cool and colourful learning space. The library began its life as the principal’s place of residence, then it was converted into a preschool and for

many years it was the old library. Now it is a new resource centre facility with a new floor plan, teaching space, digital technology, storage and even a covered outdoor learning deck. Students, staff and community members are excited to enjoy the new multipurpose teaching space where they can find a quiet space to read a book, dance and sing along with the music teacher, practise a musical instrument, navigate the internet or just enjoy the comfortable air-conditioned environment with integrated sound for students with hearing difficulties. THIS Sunday, March 21, the Beerburrum School of Arts will host a family-friendly multicultural arts showcase as part of Harmony Week celebrations. Celebrating Australia’s cultural diversity, Harmony Week runs from March 15-21 to highlight inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Free counselling available UNTIL mid-June Louise Millar, an intern counsellor from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), is available for free counselling at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre on Monday mornings from 9.30-11.30am and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am-2.30pm. Louise said members of the community are welcome to come along for an informal chat and a cuppa, or to learn more about coping strategies for everyday life. ACCESS to life-saving equipment iis now a reality for Mooloolah Valley residents with a brand new automated eexternal defibrillator (AED) available at Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy. Pharmacist Ruth Zerner said having tthe device available for public use in an emergency may be the difference between life and death. “In these situations there is no time to lose, so we want the public to be aware that we have an AED in store and those in need can simply grab the device and go,” Ruth said. “The pack is lightweight and includes safety gloves, a mask for performing CPR, scissors and a razor, and, of course, the defibrillator, which is very straightforward to use with visual and audio prompts. “Our pharmacists are trained in using the device as well and can assist if required,” she said. The pharmacy offers an immunisation pond service, the staff are trained to respond to anaphylaxis and the recent addition of the AED adds an additional layer of protection for customers. AEDs can increase the sudden cardiac arrest survival rates by up to 75%. Organisations or individuals can now purchase an AED through the pharmacy as the devices are now much more affordable.

FOR those who have already headed down the rabbit hole of researching family history, or those keen to have a bit of a poke around, the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (RBDM) can be great place to start. However, be warned, it can be both thrilling and addictive as the layers of family history reveal themselves, sometimes with unexpected ease that spurs further enquiry. Local and family history buﬀs will be heartened to hear that during COVID-19 requests for Queensland family history records soared. Statistics compiled by the RBDM show that family history purchases jumped 22 per cent over the course of 2020, rocketing up to almost 40 per cent in May compared to the previous year. With people spending more time at home and a resurgence in appreciation of what really matters, such as family, an interest in researching family history seemingly came out a winner. RBDM is a virtual treasure trove. It’s an awesome place to start with several free online searches to whet your appetite.

Bus petition StudentS living in a school catchment area (as defined by the department of education) do not always have access to subsidised public transport to that school. I’ve had many families contact me in the past 12 years with school transport issues. For example, there are many families in Mooloolah Valley in the Maleny State High School catchment who can’t access subsidised school transport to Maleny. The reason is STAS. The Student Transport Assistance Scheme (STAS) is a policy of subsidising public transport to the nearest school, which may not be the school the education department requires the child to attend. When the Department of transport starts dictating the educational decisions of parents across Glass House and the entire state of Queensland, you know that something is seriously wrong. That’s why I’ve launched a petition

THE Queensland Government has officially rolled out a new hospitality venue check-in app that aims to make patron check-in at venues simpler and faster. The Check In Qld app is free, contactless, secure and convenient, and has been successfully trialled over the past few weeks. More than 204 businesses are registered and using the app. Beerwah restaurant Baan Thai has been using the app since February and is keen to see local customers getting on board by downloading it. For customers, it is simple to use. Simply download the app from Google Play or the Apple App Store, then enter your details and your dependents’ details. Once entered, the app safely and securely remembers your details making it easy to check in, saving you time. At participating venues, you can check in by opening the app and using the venue’s Check In Qld QR code.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Yvette D’Ath said the app had been endorsed by Queensland Health and would play a critical role in the state’s contact tracing efforts. “The new Check In Qld app will help Queensland Health’s hard-working contact tracing team to quickly identify and assist anyone who may have been exposed to COVID-19,” Ms D’Ath said.

Getting appy in the garden THE most feared emails I receive must be the ones with the subject line ‘What plant is this’. Inevitably it’s accompanied by a photo and an apology for how blurry it is or that it’s just some dried leaves and a dead flower. In the real old days (before, say, 2001), when a gardener found a plant they were unsure about they would (in no particular order and most likely more than one) ask a neighbour; ask a green-fingered friend; ask at a garden club meeting; take a cutting to the local nursery (remember them); borrow a ‘what plant is that’ book from the local library; take a cutting to a garden show or event; drop a cutting to the local newspaper gardening writer; or press and dry a cutting and post it to the Queensland Herbarium for them to identify. However, with the advent of digital cameras and mobile phones, gardeners can now snap a photo or two and email it to someone they think can help. Don’t get me wrong, I really do enjoy the thrill of the hunt, chasing up a plant identification if it’s not something I know off the top of my head. A case in point was an email I received about an unknown plant mysteriously appearing growing below and up someone’s azalea bush. It looked familiar, maybe something in the snapdragon family, but the leaf structure was not right.

In those dark old days, I would have sat down for an hour and thumbed through my copy of ‘Flowering Plants of the World’. However, being a totally modern man, I downloaded the photo to a plant identiﬁcation app on my smart phone. Instantly, I had six possible candidates to choose from, with each including multiple photos to compare. Straight away, it was obvious that the most likely candidate is a form of the common garden plant Nemesia (most likely Nemesia fruticans). The app I used was Pl@ntnet. It seems to be the most widely used of the free versions and has a very large database of plant species and photos. It’s not an Australian-based system, so it’s not the best for our natives. However, it seems to do the trick if you’re trying to work out a garden plant or a weed species, as most of these are from Europe, Asia, Africa or the Americas. It’s not fail-safe but it does give you a quick starting point for you to make further investigations. There are other apps – including PlantSnap, Garden Answers (iOS only) and What Flower is That (Android only). Whichever you use, make sure you verify the result through other means. Never, ever rely on an online system to identify if something is edible - that just exposes you to so much risk. And please keep sending me your photos of unidentiﬁed plants. I really do enjoy the challenge.

IN THE

WON’T be long until the season changes and we move into the autumn then winter phase in the garden. Both day and night temperatures will start to drop … and that’s a thought we’re probably all looking forward to. However, just like us, plants can suffer in the cooler conditions and can come down with the winter blues. As the air temperature cools so does the soil temperature. This results in soil microbes slowing down and not breaking down organic matter, making nutrients harder for the plant roots to absorb. You see plants suffering some nutrient deficiencies in winter. Citrus is a classic example with leaves turning yellow. Deciduous trees respond by taking the nutrients back from the leaves down into their roots. The leaves change colour and fall, giving us a spectacular display. Non-deciduous plants just suffer in silence. To perk them up, it’s a good idea to lay down a blanket of mulch around the roots to protect the soil from the cool night air.

Yellowing veins are a typical sign of winter nutrient stress in citrus Also treat them to a drench of seaweed tonic (for the soil microbes) and a soluble fertiliser solution (something like Thrive) – unless it’s a phosphorus-sensitive native plant, in which case use a native-speciﬁc fertiliser. Don’t forget that water soluble fertilisers leach out of the soil with rain, so don’t use it until there are four or ﬁve days of dry weather predicted.

Free paint disposal available locally DOES your garden shed end up being a storage ground for old paint cans? Why not give it a thorough clean out this weekend and dispose of old paint cans responsibly? If readers aren’t already aware, it’s free to drop off your leftover paint (both household and trade use) at the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre. The aim is to keep leftover paint out of landfill and repurpose it. The national initiative behind the free drop off is called Paintback. Founded in 2016, over the past five years the initiative has been responsible for the collection and treatment of 23 million kilograms of unwanted paint. Along with disposing of paint responsibly, the

initiative repurposes valuable materials into recycled packaging, alternative energy and water resources in industrial processes. Supported by the Australian Government and all states and territories, with some amending their regulations to allow trade painters the same access to the scheme as DIY painters, it is the first unified national scheme to be developed and voluntarily implemented by the industry. It’s never been easier to clear out your old paint supplies all the while helping the environment and avoiding landfill fees. Surely if you haven’t opened a paint can for the past two decades it’s probably not worth keeping.

WATERBUGS are an important food source for platypuses, turtles and other aquatic animals but did you know they also oﬀer valuable insights into waterway health? Certain waterbugs are very sensitive to pollution, while others are more tolerant. If sensitive bugs aren’t found when a sample is collected, there is a problem with that waterway. Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare (WRL) conducts a waterbug monitoring program that aims to raise community awareness about the health

of our local waterway. The group meets on the last Friday of each month at diﬀerent sites on the Mooloolah River. The Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Ken Barker ON the last Thursday in February lawn one hosted two doubles games. Kath Smith and Janelle Wilson were beaten by Gillian Bradley and Lynette Evans 8-12. Wallace Roy and Helen Andrews finished ahead of Bev Sockhill and Sally Adams 15–6. On lawn two Val Carbery and Sarah Widin refused to give Vince Carbery a break pegging out 26–6 while Nick Cram was unlucky against Ken Barker losing 5–26. On Sunday, February 28 the threat of rain kept most players away. Val and Janelle made 15 against Stuart Craig and Vince 6. Miggy Mackie returned in style against Ken scoring a neat 7 before Ken made a long break to finish ahead with 14. Four determined players ventured onto the lawn as rain bucketed down on Thursday, March 4. Sarah teamed with Janelle to narrowly, yet convincingly, trounce Wallace and Lynette 17–16 under clearing skies. The lawns filled again on Sunday, March 7. Lawn two saw a hard-fought game between Nick and Vince with Nick finishing slightly ahead 13–11. Helen and Wallace played two games with Wallace winning both 13–5 and 7–3. On lawn one Val and Stuart teamed up to make 9 against Donna Manning 7 while Miggy and Sarah played to 16 all. Our excellent, well cared for lawns are on the righthand side of the Maleny Showground. Raindrops, thunder and lightning didn’t stop Witta Wagtails and Eumundi Miss Gems from enjoying some great tennis. Miss Gems came away winners but the Wagtails put up a good fight. Thank you to Gerry Gabriel, Sonia Douglas, Cheryl Cavanagh and a big thanks to Annie Stewart for filling in. Friday, February 26: Whistlers played at Maroochydore against the Blue Bells. First match of the year and it was good to be back on the court with the team. We had a bit of a shaky start but had some good rallies and a good win. Score was 7-1 sets, 43-18 games. Team was Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper and Annie Quarmby. Wednesday, March 3: Witta Wagtails managed to play one set against the Maroochydore Sapphires before the rain set in. Good tennis but the weather put a stop to any further play for the day. Friday, March 5: Whistlers played at Witta against Caloundra Racquettes. We had a nice sunny day and we enjoyed being on the court. We had a good win

A big welcome to Craig Herron who proved his prowess by partnering Paula to a win in his first mixed match. This was followed by another impressive win by John Poole and Annie. Some really exciting tennis throughout the day kept us in the hunt but after getting to 4 sets all at the halfway mark, we eventually went down 8-4 sets after an impressive day’s play. Thanks to Nambour for a wonderful day’s tennis. Also thanks to Craig Herron, John Poole, Andrew Blows, Annie Quarmby, and Jim and Paula Cudmore for their competitive spirit.
