What's Happening August 2018
Last week Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk launched the Queensland Drought Appeal to help support people in regional parts of the state who have been affected by drought. With more than half of the state in the grip of a devastating six-year drought it has had terrible impacts across many communities in Queensland. The Queensland Government has contributed $100,000 to kick off the appeal and the premier is urging all Queenslanders to dig deep and get behind our regional and rural communities that are currently being affected by the drought. The money raised through the Drought Appeal will go to the QCWA to be spent on the ground to assist those who live in drought-stricken communities. Donations can be made online at www.qlddroughtappeal.com.au or at any local CommBank branch by asking to donate to the ‘QCWA Qld Drought Appeal’. There are also many initiatives currently going on locally that will go to supporting farmers in need. We have included stories on some of these across our Local News section from pages 3-5. Helping one family at time Jacob Hume and his family from Mooloolah Meats are determined to “save one family at a time” by raising funds to provide practical assistance to families on the land in need. The Hume family has organised a meat tray raffle through their business with funds raised going towards buying bales of hay and other practical items which they will personally deliver to a Queensland farm out west. Head to our Moo for Mooloolah feature, page 14, to get the full story or to find out how you can get behind Jacob’s fundraising efforts. Jacob said when speaking to farmers he discovered that what people on the land really need is assistance with practical resources such as hay and food – and they also needed to know that people are thinking of them. “After speaking with a mate who told me more about the real challenges and devastation people are going through, I couldn’t stop thinking about it – and just wanted to come up with a way to help,” said Jacob. “The response to the raffle from the locals has been incredible. Not only have they contributed with cash, the generosity has extended to the use of a nine-metre long flatbed truck to transport items, and donations of numerous bales of hay. “Within the first week or so of launching, the raffle raised nearly $2,000 – the support has been absolutely phenomenal! “Most people don’t really care about the raffle prize, they just want to help. We’ve had people

Once they have delivered the relief, Jacob and his partner plan to spend an additional few days out west contributing to the local economy. Residents support drought relief
Pay 4 Hay Each year Agricultural Science students from Glasshouse Christian College (GCC) travel down to the rural NSW town of Warialda to gain exposure to more extensive farming operations. The farmers are always generous with their time and skills, so this year GCC students are turning the tables and giving back to the farmers. The students were horrified at the terrible drought conditions, particularly in the Warialda region and an idea ignited to take hay down to the area. Local farmer John Allen was first on board offering a truck and himself as a driver. From there the ‘Pay 4 Hay’ campaign took off. The Agricultural Science students posed for a photo for the Go Fund Me Facebook page showing they had reached the halfway mark, however within two days the whole amount of $5,000 was raised! Glasshouse Christian College’s Head of Agricultural Services, Jade King, said: “We’ve been blown away by the generosity of our community. “GCC parents, local businesses and complete strangers have dug deep and we really appreciate it,” she added. The ‘Pay 4 Hay’ campaign has gained so much momentum that it has grown beyond the original truckload of hay. “The drought is so bad that the attention is now focusing on feeding the farmers rather than just the animals,” Jade said.

To help pay for the hampers and other necessities the GCC Agricultural Science students are running a series of fundraising events before and after school to secure as much funding as possible. The ‘Pay 4 Hay’ Go Fund Me Facebook page will continue for those wanting to help. The students are looking forward to the privilege of helping farmers directly in such a tangible way. Ultimately, the most fundamental lessons are learning first-hand the value of being an active part of such a supportive community and the selfless act of helping others without the expectation of anything in return.
By Sonia Clark Last Sunday residents and guests of Twin Cedars Life Style Village John and Yvonne at Beerburrum attended Pozzey a special country-themed lunch fundraiser to help support Queensland farmers who are doing it tough. The event was organised by the Twin Cedars Home Owners Association, and their President, John Pozzey, said the response from residents and local businesses towards supporting the fundraiser had been absolutely fantastic. “We had so many wonderful items and raffle prizes donated by both local businesses and our residents,” John said. Some residents who were unable to attend the event donated cash instead. One lady donated $100 from the proceeds of a no longer needed laptop, and numerous others have donated items that were included in the raffle. The idea to hold the fundraiser came from a desire amongst the village’s 100 residents to practically help those affected by drought. Proceeds from the event will go directly to Drought Angels. The lunch featured a menu of beef stew and damper, and residents and guests were invited to come in fancy dress for a bit of added fun. Local businesses from Beerburrum to Beerwah threw their support behind the event, and the association is now looking forward to presenting the proceeds of their efforts to such a worthy and important cause.

Saturday September 15 will be a busy day in the village of Witta as it plays host to both Wittafest at the Witta Rec Club from 10am to 5pm and the monthly markets across the road at the Old Witta School from 7am to noon. Following on from two successful Wittafest events in 2015 and 2016, the organisers decided to make the event biennial and work is now underway to finalise the program for this year’s event. Witta Recreational Club President and Wittafest Coordinator Lynda Burgess is keen to create a traditional fair as part of this year’s offerings and would love to hear from local community groups who would be interested in holding stalls of craft, cooking, plants or being part of the entertainment program. Lynda said: "I have confirmed that the wonderful Busy Needles ladies will have their items for sale at Wittafest. So visitors may like to stock up on some lovely warm items for next winter or to send overseas for the Northern Winter season. “The Quota club of Maleny have come on board today and will be selling cakes and biscuits and giving their profits to the Drought Appeal, which is a very good initiative I think, so we want as many people as possible to come along, buy a coffee then buy a bikkie to go with that cup of coffee,” Lynda said. Police are urging residents within the Sunshine Coast, particular rural areas, to be attentive to their own homes and their neighbours’ security. Breaks ins around rural properties in areas of the Glass House Mountains, Bald Knob and Maleny could be considered ‘easy targets’ due to residents often leaving doors and windows unlocked and neighbours are often not close enough to witness incidents. Members of the public have reported to police some suspicious behaviour of undesirables driving on back roads, mostly reported to be in stolen vehicles. Police would like to remind members of the public, no matter your postcode, to remain aware of home and vehicle security. Maleny Golf Club - a hub of community activities
Maleny Golf Club is rapidly emerging as a vibrant community hub for a diverse range of sporting and social activities ranging from golf and athletics to star gazing and the rehabilitation of degraded habitat and wetlands. More than 1,200 athletes and 4,000 visitors from around Australia and New Zealand are expected to converge on the picturesque golf course and Community Precinct later this month for the National Cross Country Championships. The event, to be staged on Saturday August 25, follows the successful running of the Queensland Cross Country Championships on August 4 with over 500 competing athletes. Maleny Golf Club President Max Whitten said this national athletics event only came to Queensland once every eight years and would provide Maleny and the Sunshine Coast Hinterland with a major economic boost. “The combined resources of the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC), especially services club members, have been called on to make this a truly memorable occasion for Maleny, the Sunshine Coast and all of Queensland,” Dr Whitten said. He said Maleny was now recognised as having one of the best cross country racing venues in the nation since opening up the undulating golf course and community precinct for local and state competitions in recent years. “These events all bring significant economic and social benefits to our district and the Maleny Golf Club is pleased and proud to be able to open up and share its facility for such major cross country activities,” Dr Whitten said. However, the golf club has also been forging other
strong community links beyond athletics and local sporting clubs such as Witta Tennis, which stages regular fun golf days to raise funds for activities or a worthy cause. The golf club also shares its facilities with the Sunshine Coast Dark Sky Astronomers group who, under the auspices of the Brisbane Astronomical Society (BAS), hold regular family-friendly evening sessions for the public. Dr Whitten said the BAS aimed to establish a Dark Sky Park at Maleny Golf Club which would attract visitors and tourists from Australia and abroad. The golf course covers 27.7ha of the 128ha Maleny Precinct, formed from two dairy farms purchased by the Sunshine Coast Council from George Armstrong and Steve Porter. The golf club, with financial support from council, has since acted as council’s agent to deliver an award-winning 12-hole golf course for the benefit of the community, local business and regional tourism. Dr Whitten said the club had effectively transformed a weed-infested former dairy farm into a quality golf course which had been conservatively valued at $3.5 million prior to expansion from 9 to 12 holes this year. “In the process we saved every mature native tree, planted hundreds more, converted a degraded dam into a functioning wetland and are now working with council to similarly enhance the southern wetland,” he said.
Photo by Steve Manning “The golf club is proud of its environmental stewardship during the construction process, having created magnificent park and wetland vistas for walkers using the precinct trail, and we remain committed to conserving local biodiversity.” Dr Whitten said the golf club currently employed three full-time staff, but this number was expected to triple over coming years. “The golf club also provides a valuable opportunity for our army of volunteers who contribute to the community by helping to staff the golf shop and assist with construction and maintenance of the course,” he said. “We are working closely with the MDSRC and council to establish Maleny and the Sunshine Coast Hinterland as a destination for sports tourism.” The Maleny Golf Club remains committed to sharing its facility where practical with other compatible users and is now in the process of expanding from 12 to 18 holes with ongoing financial support from council. “Maleny businesses, the community and council should rightly be proud of what has been achieved to date,” Dr Whitten said.

By Sonia Clark If you hurry there is still time to enter the 2018 ‘Fibre art tea cosy and beanie’ competition. Organised by local fibre artist and ‘beanieologist’ Caroline Payne, this will be the second year of competition in what will hopefully become an annual event. The competition will run from this Saturday, August 18, until Saturday August 25 at the Landsborough Hall, and entries can be received right up until the morning of August 18. There will be three categories of judging – novice, intermediate and experienced – and the final judging and announcements will be overseen by Northern Rivers fabric artist and fellow ‘beanieologist’, Megan Jack. Entries are welcome from all age groups and can be knitted, woven, crocheted, sewn or made in any crafty medium. The only rule is that it must be a covering for a teapot or head – so get crafty and creative. All proceeds go towards supporting Landsborough Hall, and organisers are hoping to build on last year’s success which saw 54 entries received for the inaugural competition. It costs just $5 to enter and $3 for any subsequent entries, which can be dropped off at Caroline’s ‘Happy Hooker’ stall at the Landsborough Markets or, if you’re quick, posted to 70 Kings Road, Glass House Mountains. Entries will be on display and voted on during the week of competition. People are invited to make a gold coin donation and submit their People’s Choice vote. Winter Theatre Festival starts Saturday
A special welcome to country by a group of Jinibara people will open the Maleny Arts Council Winter Theatre Festival this Saturday, August 18, at 7.15pm in the Community Centre. This is a feature of the Ilbijerri Theatre Company’s tour of ‘Which Way Home’, the first of the three plays in the festival. Arts Council President Peter Lavery suggested this performance will have a special vibe, and recommends the play to all Maleny theatre goers. This will be the last performance of a highly successful Australian tour. ‘Which Way Home’ has had huge critical success in all the capital cities. Written by Katie Beckett, who also plays Tash, it is the story of an Aboriginal girl and her much loved dad, played by Kamahi Djordon King, and their road from Yuggerah Country Ipswich to Muriwarri Country Goodooga in a return to country, “where the sky is higher and the world goes on forever”. Katie Beckett has based her play on her own childhood growing up with a single Aboriginal father after her mother died when she was five years old. She was the recipient of the Balnaves Foundation Indigenous Playwright’s Award in 2015 for a previous play and the Ilbijerri Theatre Company of Melbourne is Australia’s leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander professional theatre group. “After the performance there will be time for our patrons to buy a drink from the bar, return to their seats, relax and interact with the cast, as they conduct a Q&A session,” Professor Lavery said. There are still some seats available and they can be booked through the Maleny Arts Council website, www.malenyartscouncil.com, or from the Maleny Visitors Centre. Cost is $30 (or $25 for members), $15 for students. Season tickets are also available for all three plays in the festival at $75 ($65 for members). The next play, ‘Rovers’, will be on Sunday August 26 at 2pm, and finally ‘Death by Soprano’ will be on Sunday September 16 at 2pm.

'Euphoria’ is a new collaboration bringing together gorgeous music on guitar, piano and mandolin for a concert filled with fun and energy on Wednesday August 29 at 6.30pm in St George’s Anglican Church, 2 Walkers Drive, Maleny. One of the world’s leading mandolin players, Masataka Hori, is heading the evening along with Perth-based pianist, Sestsu Masuda, and leading Brisbane-based classical guitarist, Duncan Gardiner. Night-time feral animal surveying Sunshine Coast Council would like to advise residents in the areas of Kenilworth, Conondale and Cambroon that council officers will be performing routine night-time feral animal surveying in these areas between Tuesday and Thursday, August 14-16 this week. Surveying is used to determine the distribution, population, size, habitat use and impacts of feral animals. The survey is conducted from council roads and reserves and does not require officers to enter private property. The work will be performed using night-time thermal imaging equipment mounted to a council vehicle. No spotlights are used.

The Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch will hold a ceremony to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day on Saturday August 18 at the Glasshouse Visitor Information Centre Cenotaph commencing at 11am. The ceremony coincides with the 52nd Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966 where D Company 6 RAR and supporting Units fought off overwhelming numbers of the enemy in a rubber tree plantation in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam. Eighteen young Australian Soldiers lost their lives. Ex-Service people attending the ceremony are requested to wear medals. The general public is warmly welcome to attend. When the first Beerwah Charity Sports day was held in 1971, the program was based on traditional horse sports popular in country districts. Over the 47 years since, this community fundraising event has turned into a carnival with a multitude of activities and competitions, but the central focus of the day is still the ring program. The modern Charity Sports offers a day out for all horse lovers, with over 250 classes including hacking, jumping, led classes for all well-known breeds, a Junior Ring with age groups from 9/10 to 19/25 years, and special events for eight years and under. The children’s classes are always popular, especially the costume class for child and horse which attracts brilliantly creative entrants every year. Entry fees are small, and while there are ribbons, trophies and moderate prize money, the emphasis is always on having a good day, a little more relaxed than many horse shows, so that children and new riders can enjoy themselves and nominate for as many classes as they can manage. A new section which proved popular last year is on the program again for 2018: a special ring for miniature and small horses with led and performance classes. Shetland trotters from the Queensland Mini Trotting Association provide excitement with races every half hour during the afternoon, and the Stockman’s Challenge attracts enthusiastic participants each year in both novice and open categories.

Men’s Shed for Mooloolah
By Sonia Clark The Mooloolah Men’s Shed project is getting closer to fruition following a community meeting earlier this month and the formation of a steering committee. After years of discussion and growing interest, Mooloolah may finally be well on the way to getting the go ahead for making the Mooloolah Men’s Shed a reality. Following an impressive turnout of around 40 people at the Mooloolah Hall on Saturday August 4, and an agreement from Education Queensland to accept proposals for the use of land behind the Mooloolah Community Centre, a Men’s Shed Steering Committee has now been established. Bernie Verwayen from the Mooloolah Valley Community Association, a strong advocate for the initiative over the last four years, is very pleased that the idea is finally gaining traction. “Myself and others here in Mooloolah have been passionate about getting this project up and running for a number of years. It feels bloody terrific that we’re at this point now, and I’m ready to hand this over to the steering committee,” said Bernie. The proposed site for the shed will be the area previously allocated to the community garden, which has had space provided at the front of the centre. Community grant applications are in process to fund the Men’s Shed building, and quotes for works are currently being sought. Quilting Show and Tell Open Day
The Mooloolah Valley Quilting and Craft Group is inviting members of the community to come along to the Mooloolah Hall for their ‘Show and Tell Open Day’ on Wednesday September 5 from 9.30am. The group first started meeting almost 40 years ago, back in 1980, and members have continued to meet each Wednesday morning at the hall where new and old designs and tips are passed on, or where they work on their own projects, or sometimes just chat over a cuppa. Over years many faces have changed and many firm friendships have been forged. Besides a lot of chatting and laughter, the group’s dedicated members have sewn, knitted and crocheted hundreds of items that have been donated to, or raffled for, various charities. The groups they have supported have included OzCare Nursing Home, Diamond Valley Lodge, Sippy Creek Animal Shelter, The Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue, Outback Outreach, and the Mooloolah Fire Brigade, along with purchasing sewing machines for poor women in India. These and other projects have given the group an outward focus and they are always open to new projects to support. At present the group has a raffle that will to be drawn at the open day and they hope to be able to donate $1,000 to buy bales of hay to help struggling farmers. Some of the highlights of each year are the bus trips to craft fairs and craft shops, as well as their quarterly lunches and their Christmas breakups. New members are always welcome and they would love to see some new faces at their open day where there will be a quilt show, lucky door prizes and much more. Community Groups An update from the Friends of the Forest group Readers may recall the enormous efforts of a dedicated group of locals who fought to ensure that the Steve Irwin Way – Bruce Highway – Caloundra Road upgrade had as little negative impact as possible on the forests, wildlife and environmental assets of the area. The ‘Friends of the Forest’ group has continued their stewardship role, monitoring the works happening and having regular meetings with the road construction project team. Below is an update from the group on how things are going. The disturbance caused to fauna and flora ecosystems is highly significant on a road development of the magnitude of the works being done in this area. At a recent meeting between the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and environmental stakeholders, the TMR Environment Officer reported that since our last meeting in December, 120 Swamp Crayfish – which are classified as endangered – have been captured and released at another safe location away from the Steve Irwin Way/Bruce Highway roadworks but within the same river system. Bandi Bandi snakes and Striped Marsh Frogs were also found and relocated, as was a Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vine. Friends of the Forest group had previously requested that any hollow tree limbs on the project be retained as valuable fauna habitat. TMR reported that at least 70 hollow trees and logs have been relocated to one of the offset properties. TMR presented maps and designs of the proposed wildlife underpasses/overpasses. Despite the design benefits of these underpasses, no future monitoring of the sites had been put in place, so we suggested that they engage the help of the school groups, university students and special interest groups who use the area regularly to help collate sightings and collect data. We also suggested the use of motion sensor cameras. At our request, official dating of the large ‘Guardian’ Blackbutt trees felled during the road construction outside Jowarra Park was undertaken to determine their age, and TMR reported that they were a little under 400 years old! We requested their timber be used to make a circular seating area for a ‘yarning circle’ at Jowarra Park and we’ve provided TMR with designs. TMR also reported that the local Kabi Kabi group working party has provided consultation and

Items that have cultural heritage significance have also been found in the project area. This includes scar trees as well as significant Indigenous artefacts – around 300 articles in total – including grinding stones and tools. These are planned to be returned to country and displayed in the area of the planned memorial/yarning circle. We are also happy to report that there are new toilet facilities planned at the Jowarra Park rest area. Another of our concerns has been the Voluntary Conservation status of the land offset properties, since it does not ensure the protection of the offset area into the future. There is only a 10-year commitment required by law, which leaves it open to be sold off after the 10-year agreement. Domestic dogs accessing the land are also a problem. As these properties fall into Sunshine Coast Council jurisdiction and management after the project is completed we will continue to liaise with them and the State Government to ensure these properties enjoy greater protection into the future as well as look to secure areas of land with higher value flora and fauna that should be used as offset areas. We requested that TMR purchase high habitat value land as a more appropriate offset, given that critically endangered tropical lowland forest was resumed as part of their road footprint. We will continue to stay engaged with this project as it progresses and we offer our input so as to work towards a more conscious and sustainable partnership between developers and those who wish to see the survival of our unique flora and fauna, for the continued enjoyment of future generations. The cooler weather is still with us which means that it is a good time to plant without the fear of our gardens dying from heat stress. It is a good idea to plant now in readiness for spring rains which hopefully will be with us soon. Our nursery has good stocks of local tree species and shrubs just waiting to be planted. Bushland working bee
The Coochin Creek Bushland Group will be holding its next working bee on Tuesday August 21 from 7.30am to around 10.30am. Since our last working bee we have hosted a group of Chinese high school students here on holiday. They were keen to experience what we do here in Australia so they spent a morning planting native plants in our Reserve and we were delighted to be able to introduce them to things like the call of the Kookaburra and the cheek of the Willy Wagtail. This month we will finish off the work done by our Chinese guests and make sure the new plants are watered and that each plant is marked to ensure that they are not damaged during weeding operations. After that there is lots of weeding and clean-up work to be done. All are welcome to join us. The Coochin Creek Bushland Group is part of the Sunshine Coast Nature Conservation Program. Participation is free and tea is provided during the working bee. Participants are advised to wear boots, a longsleeved shirt, long pants, sun hat, and to carry a water bottle. All equipment required, including tick repellant, will be supplied. We will start by meeting at the gate to Caralan Park, which is at the corner of Emma Place and Caralan Way in Beerwah. Students get outdoors
Contributed by Daphne Mundy Beerwah State School students recently performed in three sections at the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod: the Small Ensemble, the Quartet, and the Concert Band. The students all performed exceptionally well with the Concert Band winning second place. Quartet: Maddison, Grace, Jessica and Ava All students thoroughly enjoyed this worthwhile experience. The students will next perform at the school’s biannual Arts Evening on September 13.
Beerburrum students recently spent a day in the great outdoors in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden. Every student from Prep through to Year 6 planted, mulched and watered an abundance of vegetable seedlings which will be nurtured and harvested over the coming months for use in kitchen classes. ‘Unusual Plants in Our Garden’ was an interesting session held in which students discovered facts about Aloe Vera, Loofahs and Dragon Fruit. A demonstration was given on how to make Aloe Vera gel which has many health benefits. A free dress day for a gold coin donation which raised a whopping $182 also helped students to understand the current struggle of farmers on the land.

There will also be three ‘Welcome Mornings’ which will be run from 9.30am10.50am on Wednesdays, September 5, October 17 and October 24 – and parents are asked to bring along a hat and a piece of fruit for their children. The sessions are designed to build confidence, start friendships and for children to gain a familiar picture of what ‘big school’ is going to be like. Often after three days at big school our future Preppies have met children in other grades, relaxed and most importantly had fun. This helps to realise that our small school is not so big and scary. Masterpiece Dance students recently participated at a local Dance Eisteddfod in Gympie, coming away with some amazing results. Their 10-year-old Performance team placed third in Jazz and third in Contemporary against other big dance schools and older competitors. Their 12-year-old Performance team placed second in Contemporary, meaning Masterpiece Dance took out two of the top three placings in this category. Soloist Madeleine Bell also had amazing results, coming first place in her Contemporary Solo and being Highly Commended for her Ballet Solo. Masterpiece Dance owner Miss Sarah said she could not Solo performer be prouder of the girls and what they achieved. Madeleine Bell “It is the result of lots of hard work, their energy and enthusiasm for dance,” she said. “This is only the second year Masterpiece has been involved in Dance Eisteddfods and it is awesome to see the growth already.”

A heap of exciting happenings going on! Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre has been a hive of activity lately with a heap of exciting happenings going on. From attendance at the Early Years Expo, to fundraising events and new explorations through the ‘Schoolies' STEM program, both the Centre staff and children have been busy having fun. Earlier this month team members Ange and Amber were thrilled to participate in the Early Years Expo at Glass House Mountains State School. The Expo was a lovely community collaboration, and a great way to meet new (and old) faces. The day featured a heap of child focused activities and Ange and Amber had some fun leading ‘DYI’ planting with the children. One of the Expo highlights was meeting friendly new faces, and seeing children who had

previously attended the Centre as little ones now helping lead the prep and grade 1 groups. The festive atmosphere continued throughout the Expo with Amber’s face-painting skills in high demand – luckily, she loves being creative as it was an extremely popular drawcard on the day! On Friday, staff and families at the Centre are gearing up to throw their support behind Aussie farmers doing it tough with a farm-tastic fundraiser planned. Staff and children have been invited to dress up in a ‘Country/Farmer themed’ outfit and bring a gold coin or donation on the day. All donations will go towards the ‘Buy a Bale’ initiative. Families at the Centre have always been keen to support those less fortunate, and with so much of Queensland still remaining in drought, the fundraiser will provide a fun day of activities for the children that will support a much-needed cause. The ‘Schoolies’ before and after school care program is very currently focused on their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) program at the moment. The children are loving their very messy but very fun exploration of cause and effect. Current ‘experiments’ include making cloud dough, slime goop and looking at the different reactions created
when different ingredients are added together – for example baking soda and vinegar. The Schoolies room is made up of a great bunch of local school children from Beerburrum, Beerwah and Glass House State Schools as well as Glass House Christian College. Localised morning school drop off and afternoon pickups are available with the Centre’s dedicated bus and ‘Schoolies’ care is available during term time from 6.30am until 6.30pm. Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre provides children the access to a wide range of fun and educational opportunities and seeks to encourage children both young and older to feel safe, confident and happy. You Said It Brain tumours in children and teens
Sunshine Coast Council should to talk to well-known Australian neurosurgeons, Drs Charlie Teo, Gautam Khurana and RIchard Bittar. In March 2009 the three of them wrote a 'Letter to the Editor' of the medical journal Surgical Neurology titled ‘Health risks of mobile phone technology’. The letter expressed the neurosurgeons' concerns over what they considered was a serious emerging public health risk from the ubiquitous use of mobile phones and the increasing evidence for harm, including brain and salivary gland tumours, male infertility, behavioural disturbances and electrosensitivity. The authors concluded by strongly recommending that children's mobile phone use and proximity should be restricted. On previous occasions Drs Khurana, Teo and Bittar have publicised their concerns over what they were seeing in their surgeries. Dr Teo stated in a 60 Minutes interview (April 3, 2009) that he was seeing a rise in the incidence of brain cancer and as a result the public should be informed as to all the potential causes of the disease. Dr Teo said that he was "incredibly worried, and depressed at the number of kids I'm seeing coming in with brain tumours. Just in the last three or four weeks I've seen nearly half a dozen kids with tumours which should have been benign and they've all been nasty, malignant brain tumours. We are doing something terribly wrong." Dr Khurana said he too is "seeing too many young people with such tumours". That was nine years ago. What about today? Allowing phone and NBN towers at or next to schools and childcare centres is allowing children to be exposed to EMR of the sort that Australia's best neurosurgeons say is "incredibly worrying". On Saturday, July 21 the Bee-Gees Football Club celebrated the 50th anniversary of the club’s first game. The five members of the original team present were Fidel Fernandez, Antonio (Lucky) Chronopoulos, Manual Armesto, Ken Fullerton, and Allan Smerdon. These players, along with the club’s Life Members and Club Legends, were presented with a club shirt which features the names of the original team on the back. Prior to the A-grade game commencing, Sports Club President Warren Raddatz and Secretary Stephen Forster unveiled and named the Fullerton Function Room. To me this was an extremely justifiable and rewarding acknowledgement of the Fullerton family. This family has contributed unprecedented aid and support through generations of the family.

Maleny golf course and alternatives
Thank you to Jane Hyde for carrying the flame for a broader vision for the Maleny Community Precinct, expressed once again in her recent letter (GC&M News July 25 edition). As Jane points out, a nine hole golf course was always a fair and generous allocation for local golfers, on the precinct land, in what is a sport declining in popularity. Yet the expansion of the golf course to 18 holes has been heavily endorsed by the local councillor Jenny McKay. The latest handout of $225,000 continues the trend of open-ended funding for an expanding course that continues to ignore the diverse desires of community members expressed in a feedback process 10 years ago and in the Community Park Maleny Campaign today. We want more parkland, an open-air amphitheatre / performance space, rainforest plantings with walking trails, a botanical arboretum and community gardens among other things. This is community land, remember. Those of us who originally campaigned for a longterm vision for the precinct warned that an 18 hole golf course could well seal the land's fate to be redeveloped in the future as housing. Many golf courses are going down that path. Questions community members and ratepayers need to be asking include: what are the long term aspirations of the Sunshine Coast Council with regard to this land? Does the Maleny community have any covenant to veto future council moves over this land? Any semblance of a democratic process within this council appears to be on life-support. This has to change. To the older man who sat at the computers at the Beerwah Library on Wednesday afternoon who berated my 10-year-old son for coughing: My son was minding his own business, quietly using the computer, with his older brother. Yes, he had a cough, which I’m sure to you did not sound great. But had you spoken to him instead of demanding he take a tissue, or instead of speaking to your wife about him like he wasn’t there, you’d have perhaps learned that his cough was not contagious and in fact it is due to his poor immune system resulting from the years of chemotherapy he has had to endure so early in life. The coughs always linger for him, but are not a threat to you. Had you shown him the same respect he showed you and been polite, maybe you would have gotten to know quite a special, kind and brave young man. I am proud of my son, who chose to ignore your immature behaviour. I have always taught him to respect his elders, something he is often complimented on. However, this time, I believe the lesson was yours to learn. Disappointed Beerwah

Bridge Lessons Starting Soon
Why learn to play bridge? Played by over 220 million people worldwide, bridge is the most popular card game in the world. As a social game, bridge is a great way to meet new people. It is probably the only competitive activity that all generations can do together and all have an equal chance of winning. No matter where you go, you can always make new friends at the bridge table. It is mentally challenging, it is a great retirement hobby, something you can share with your life partner, and it offers lots of social interaction with people of all ages and from all walks of life. It can be played online as well as in a club, it is inexpensive, it can be enjoyed anywhere in the world (including on cruise ships!!) and… it is lots of fun. The medical profession is only now coming to realise that, with people tending to live longer, remaining mentally fit may be as important as maintaining levels of physical fitness. More and more often chess, bridge and crossword puzzles are being cited as excellent activities for keeping the brain exercised and stalling the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The best news is that there is a Bridge Club here in your area. The Beerwah Bridge club is four years young and is going from strength to strength. At the moment we have more than 50 members and meet twice a week in the clubhouse of the Beerwah Golf Club.

Give Tai Chi Qigong a try!
Local seniors are being encouraged to give ‘Tai Chi a try’ during a free session in the upcoming Seniors Week. Qigong Shibashi is a popular practice made up of 18 gentle flowing movements that harmonise mind, body and breath, strengthening the whole body. With regular practice Qigong helps to cleanse the body of toxins, restores energy, reduces stress and anxiety and helps individuals to maintain a healthy and active life. There is no experience necessary and it suitable for all ages. The complementary session will run for approximately one hour beginning with a warm up, 18 movements Shibashi and ending with a short guided meditation. Afternoon tea will be supplied after the session. The ‘Try Out’ session will be held on Tuesday August 21 from 2pm at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, 17 Bicentenary Lane, Maleny. Free tinnitus relief study
Hinterland Audiometrist David Hine has over thirty-five years of experience with the hard of hearing. During that time he has seen many cases of people suffering tinnitus. Tinnitus is a physical condition experienced as noises or ringing in the ears or head where no such external noise is present. Around 15% of the world’s population can experience tinnitus to some degree, which can range in severity from a minor irritant to providing major misery and stress. Following the success of the Zen Tinnitus Program in Europe in recent years, David is keen to introduce the same to the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland. However, he would firstly like to run a free trial of the program to ensure that the evidence meets the overseas claims. In this regard he is seeking a group of tinnitus sufferers to take part in a six-week trial starting in mid-September. Participants will be selected following an interview and completion of an intake questionnaire and a standard Tinnitus Functional Index Survey. Ten successful participants are required for the study. Millie’s milestone birthday celebrated
Not all members of the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club get a cake for their birthday, however at the end of July when the club’s most senior (active) club member Millie Freshwater celebrated her 90th birthday it was a cause for special celebration. At Wednesday Bowls there was a morning tea to celebrate Millie’s milestone achievement and, of course, what would a birthday be without a cake? Club Chairman Jim Tatum also presented Millie with her Matriarch badge. Millie has been bowling for 40 years and became a member of the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club back in 2005 after moving to the area.

Health &Wellbeing Adolescent brain study most ambitious of its kind University of the Sunshine Coast researchers are about to embark on the most ambitious long-term study of the adolescent brain, and they’re calling on 500 local youths to get involved. Youth Mental Health and Neurobiology Professor Daniel Hermens is leading the study at the Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience Thompson Institute, which is currently recruiting 12-year-olds in high school to be assessed several times a year for five years. Professor Hermens said the frequency of assessment for the Longitudinal Adolescent Brain Study (LABS) would be key to successfully gathering data to inform the development of evidence-based youth mental health programs. “The problem with the adolescent data available today is that the annual collection means that we don’t see those subtle changes occurring across the adolescent period when there is such dramatic change in the brain,” he said. “Adolescence is one of the most intense and dynamic periods of brain change and there is evidence to show it continues to change until the age of 25. “By checking participants every four months, we will be in a position to detect more changes

in the brain, data on their social and emotional wellbeing as well as more information about the onset of any problems. “We want to learn more about why some people develop a mental illness and others don’t. At the end of this study, we hope to be in a situation where we can see if differences in their neurobiology can help us predict what might happen next.” Researchers will collect brain imaging, data on cognitive activity in the brain, as well as information on what is happening in their lives, any stresses and influences and, as the cohort matures, expand to their social networks. Topics discussed will include resilience, wellbeing, psychological distress, cyberbullying, body image, nutrition, exercise, sleep, substance abuse and suicidality. Member of the study’s youth steering committee Charlotte Attwater, 14, said young people faced huge amounts of pressure from school, sporting commitments, academic pursuits, peer groups, social media, parental expectations, career decisions, and other areas. “If our brains are changing so much in these years and we are facing so many pressures, it’s
surprising that there hasn’t really been a study quite like this before,” Charlotte said. “I really hope the information that comes out of this will help us more fully understand what is happening in our brains so we can build youth support programs that work.” Professor Hermens said the sheer size and nature of the study meant there was much work to be done over five years, but it would result in providing an important missing piece of the mental health puzzle. Planning is well underway for a re-enactment of Maleny’s Victory Parade following WW1 which will take place on Remembrance Day, November 11, this year. When I was a child, many people had a common moral framework on which they built their life. There was a general understanding of things that you knew you just never did or said. Many people would use manners and model and teach politeness to children. Many people would go to church, kids would go to Sunday School where we’d learn about Bible stories and the principles that our country’s laws are based on. Nowadays though, thanks to the internet and TV there seems to be a thousand different ways to view life, relationships and responsibilities. There are loads of children and teenagers who are obsessed with their phones, using an array of social media apps and playing online games designed to be addictive. They’re exposed to content that is not appropriate for them and I see many parents who turn a ‘blind eye’ to this stuff. The same can be said about how people view

God. There now seems to be so much confusion about who God is. When kids ask me questions about God or faith, they seem to have no understanding of Bible stories or any of the basic Christian values such as unconditional love, mercy, forgiveness and living life God’s way. I think it is time we each thought about where the ‘lines’ are in our lives. No one can deny absolutes such as gravity or death, so we need to seriously consider the important things in life. What compromises are we making at home, school or work that we need to make right? God’s ways are not always easy, but they are true and good. There is a great Bible verse that talks about this… Proverbs 22:6 says: “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

Spring is in the air
The St George’s Church Spring Fair is looking like being something special. It will be held on Saturday September 8 from 9am-2pm in the grounds of St George’s Church on the corner of Tanglewood Road and Walker Drive, Maleny. There will be so much on offer there, you might be lucky to get time to have coffee from the van, or snacks in the hall or hot food from the Lions’ barbecue. Quality goods and furniture are already starting to fill the huge container in the grounds for a giant auction, and there will be stalls and activities galore. It wouldn’t be a church fete without a cake stall, as well as plants, produce and craft, a tombola, trash and treasure, book stall, art show and activities for children. Blossoms are blooming, our feathered friends are fraternising, and snakes are a slithering. Welcome Swallows (those fast-little insect eating birds who love to make their straw and mud nests in your verandah or shed) are starting to build their nests. Hoveas, Bacon and Eggs, Yellow Pea Bush, Acacias and too many other heath and woodland shrubs are flowering prolifically. In the last week, on separate occasions, I’ve seen two Red Belly Black Snakes and a two Carpet Pythons. Frogs can be heard when there is a spit of rain. It's early, but spring is well and truly here and my challenge to you for the next month (if you’re not already doing these things) is to get out there and plant or make habitat, take photos of nature’s wonders, start a nature diary to make note of what your seeing and when. It’s time more than ever to get involved with nature this spring, enjoy yourself and make some genuine connections on the world wide web of life! New composting concept set for release
The war on waste has been raging within the community consciousness for a while now. From disposable coffee cups and single use plastic shopping bags, to the soon-tocommence drink container refund scheme… reducing our waste footprint is so ‘on-trend’. Recently I came across a neat new product which helps solve the issue of composting in small spaces or in areas where you want to keep the garden aesthetics looking clean and tidy. Composting your household scraps and garden green waste is nothing new. There are multiple choices of worm farms, compost bins of all shapes and sizes and even inside systems like the ‘Bokashi’ composter. But most of these aren’t what you’d call pleasing to the eye (or sometimes the nose either) and so are generally hidden away in a corner of the garden or behind the shed. But a Byron Bay composting company has come up with a twist on the old ‘bucket buried in the ground’ composting technique and developed what they call the Subpod. The Subpod is designed to be embedded below ground, in an existing garden bed, to allow easy access for maintenance and harvesting of compost. Also, with it being positioned amongst your vegetables, it means you can manage your composting and growing in the same space. It’s about the size of a very big heavy-duty esky and can come with a timber-slatted lid which then just looks like a funky garden seat. The sides and base of the box are perforated and are buried below ground. This means that worms and microbes move freely from the surrounding soil into the composting chamber. The side sections, above the ground, have mesh sides to allow for airflow. It is totally vermin proof with the mesh also keeping out flies and other pests. These smart design elements mean that it is perfect for a garden bed in a unit complex or outside a café, or even in a childcare centre. The handles on the side make it easy to lift out if you need to move it – which is great for rentals. The design is so new that it is still in production, with stock planned to be available for purchase in early 2019. To read more about the Subpod, head to www.compostcentral.org/subpod.

Thursday, August 9: Social play – winners of the day were Allan Bruce (v), Bruce Whitlock (v) and Dean Shaw with the highest score of 31. Runners-up were Noelene Annakin and Grant Podmore with 29. The lucky draw went to Chris Dougan and Kerry Molloy. It was a packed afternoon on the green with 38 players. Looks like more triples will be played moving forward. Friday, August 10: Ladies Pennant vs Bongaree (away) Division 3, round 4. Our ladies teams got up on both rinks winning 52-29. Next Wednesday and Friday are their final games against Bribie Island. The club that wins will be the 2018 champions – good luck ladies! Saturday, August 11: Men’s Pennant, round 6 Division 2 home to Bongaree. It was great to finish our season with an overall win, 2 rinks to 1 with an overall score of 74-54. Beating both Caboolture Lakes and Bongaree was a pretty good effort. Solander Lakes were the 2018 champions. Division 4 home to Kilcoy, our boys were not good enough going down on both rinks losing 60-27, next week’s game is a tough one away against the number one team Solander Lake. Division 5 home to Narangba, great win by the home side getting up on both rinks with an overall score of 48-27. Next week’s game is home against the top of the table side from Donnybrook. Social, will start at 9.30am this week see you then. Our AGM will be held on Saturday, September 8, 10am at Club Glass House. Also start organising your teams for our Mixed Fours Spring Carnival on Saturday and Sunday, October 13 and 14, cost is $55 per person.

Glasshouse Lions on the Gabba Contributed by Craig Bales The Glasshouse Hinterland AFC Roy’s (under 6’s) and the Under 10’s teams got to experience what is it like to be an AFL player with a recent trip to the Gabba. The boys and girls were provided with the opportunity to participate in the games played at half time in the AFL. The Under 10’s played in the Little League game and the Roy’s participated in the Auskick game at halftime in the game between Brisbane and North Melbourne. Brisbane nearly pulled off a great come back so the kids were treated to a great match.
All the kids had a fantastic time playing on the Gabba as well as a noisy bus trip there and back. Thanks to Brett Heading for driving the bus down as this made the trip easier for many of the parents.
Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley It was a pretty good start for Witta Wagtails, however Maleny Racqueteers were the stronger players. Thank you to Gerry, Sonia, Suzie and Janet. Whistlers played at Ballinger, against Breezers. It was a battle, with three tie-breaker sets and long games with so many deuces. We couldn't get enough games but it was great tennis and was a long morning. Score was 36-40 games, 3-5 sets. Team was Brenda Warner, Maree Hooley, Aki Lepper and Donna Kuskopf.
The Wildcats were at home to Coolum Tourists. Pauline, Annie, Libby and Jennie were ahead at the half way mark, but somewhere in the break their mojo disappeared, and they eventually went down 3-5 sets. There is a club tournament this Saturday, you must be registered by noon to compete. $10 entry fee and bring a plate to share. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm all welcome. The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Jan Barnes and Vince Carbery started a game on Thursday where Vince had to leave with Jan on the peg with yellow and on 2 with Red while Vince had gone to the peg with Black and was on 3 with Blue. Ken Barker arrived and was able to take over in this enthralling position. There followed a wild tactical endgame with Black being pegged out by Yellow when Blue was on rover. Ken pegged out the Blue to win it for him and Vince 26-22, it was a great game which could have gone either way. On Sunday Ken and Vince played a game of singles which Ken won 15-4. Donna Manning played in the inaugural Queensland mixed doubles at Toombul on the weekend. She was partnered by Greg Kerswell and had an enjoyable tournament. They won about half their games against some very good

Six Maleny High School students played on Wednesday afternoon as part of their sport program. Well done that group. The common thought amongst most croquet players who take it up in their later years is that they wish they had learnt it earlier. What a good opportunity this is for those students! It’s great to see some new members joining the winners’ circle. Thanks to the teams who travelled to represent the club at away events this week. Congratulations to our teams of Graeme G and Miles A and Jim W and Ray P. Both of these teams were successful in being winners and runner up respectively at the Mapleton monthly pairs. Well done guys. Tuesday bowls was a great tussle for the teams involved with high quality bowls played by all. Thanks for those who join in with other members to play this format. Wednesday night’s barefoot bowls competition: A little cool weather has brought out the best in the Tutors. Three wins in a row makes for a good score sheet. A real tough match-up this week – Amigos versus Tutors – which could be a big seasonal decider. Steve Porter accepted the team challenge in a game of Scroungers and came out on top. Miles Allen and his team of Handels nearly came unstuck without the ever reliable Tom U. The Outlaws have improved, with late transferee Paul Kemp finding his lost form after the dumping of his teams for no show misdemeanours – great work Paul, touchers will happen as you adjust to the cooler weather game on these fast running greens. Plum Pudding Day: Kay G and Brett G have been doing some good behind the scenes work for the big day being held in November. Teams from visiting clubs are already guaranteeing their place by nominating with full payment. This is going to be a great day for the clubs of the Sunshine Coast. Our approach for this day is for the club to be a place where all have some part in our funding a kitchen upgrade. Get behind your elected board members in this venture. Dr Tiffany Chan Returning from August 13 Dr Tiffany Chan qualified as a dentist at the University of Liverpool UK in 2010 and upon graduating, she went on to work in the Community Dental Service through the National Health Service where she treated many patients with dental phobia, children and special needs patients. This experience enhanced her people skills in
putting people at ease in the dental surgery. She is gentle, great with children and those who just really hate going to the dentist! Dr. Chan has a great interest in extractions and wisdom teeth removal and has recently completed an intensive oral surgery course with maxillofacial surgeons in Cambodia.

They have recently returned from the Dental XP world symposium on dental implants in Florida where 30 of the top implantologists in the world gave participants the benefit of their latest research and techniques which they could apply to the treatment of their patients.
