We have loved so much about being part of the local community and have really enjoyed working with a team of very dedicated staff. However, we are now super keen to find our replacements. When COVID hit last year, we had a shaky moment where we threw our hands in the air and said “this is all too hard” and we planned to shut down. Elimbah’s latest centenarian

story

By Jack Waters IT was a day full of celebrations for Elimbah’s latest centenarian, Geoff Powell, with friends past and present attending his birthday lunch last Tuesday at the Elimbah Soldiers Memorial Hall. Unfortunately, none of Geoff ’s family were able to attend the day as his nieces and nephews were stuck in New South Wales due to border restrictions. Despite that, Geoff said it was great to catch up with friendly faces, some of who he hadn’t seen in years. He was also quite chuffed with himself for conquering one of his greatest challenges. “My brother lived to 99 and a half,” Geoff said. “I always wanted to beat that and I knew it was going to be a bit of a challenge – but now I’ve finally conquered it.” Geoff isn’t quite sure what to attribute this impressive feat to, but the sprightly 100-year-old said his genetics may have had something to do with it. “Along with my brother living to 99, my aunty lived to 103, my mother lived to 92 and she had a couple sisters even

older than her,” he said. “I’ve also maintained what I think to be a healthy diet with mostly good meals, and I’ve attended the doctor regularly over the past 30 years, so he probably deserves some credit in keeping me alive. “To keep breathing is a fairly important part of it too. You certainly don’t want to stop doing that,” he laughed. Geoff has been under the care of Elimbah locals Lyn and Albert Dilling for the past ten years after his wife passed away. Lyn said Geoff remained active in his older years, so much so that he even built a house in his late 70s, putting the roof on at the ripe old age of 80. “He spends a lot of time potting around out in the shed,” Lyn said. “Anything mechanical is a challenge he loves to get his hands on. “My son’s an auto electrician so they talk for hours at night.” Even though Geoff has hit triple figures, he won’t be slowing down any time soon.

Ekka state finals come to Maleny FOR only the second time in the history of the Dairy – Young Judges and Paraders competition the state ﬁnals will this year be conducted by Queensland Ag Shows at the Maleny Showground on Saturday September 25. The competition, for young people aged 15-25 years, provides signiﬁcant personal and professional development opportunities, including the opportunity to network, learn from industry professionals and practise public speaking skills.

Competitors learn how to improve their judging and parading skills and the competitions encourage them to continue their involvement in agricultural shows. Queensland Ag Shows state coordinator of the Young Judges and Paraders competitions, Monica Skerman, said that as this year’s Ekka had been cancelled, it was great that the state finals of the dairy competition could be rescheduled to still go ahead. “We are very pleased that Maleny Show Society agreed to host the finals at the showground. Maleny is well known for its long association with the dairy industry and our Maleny Show is still one of the most robust exhibitors of dairy cattle in the country,” Monica said. The event will feature young competitors from five Queensland sub chambers of Queensland Ag Shows, coming from as far as Malanda near Cairns and the Darling Downs. Our local region – the Near North Coast sub chamber – will be represented by Sharnaye Wintzloff and Britney Holt. Clinton Keir, originally from Kenilworth and a former National Dairy Parader winner, will also be competing. The winners of the state finals will be invited to represent Queensland at the 2022 national finals hosted by the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Due to the cancellation of the 2020 finals, the 2019 state winners Loka Manu and Thomas Wade from the Near North Coast sub chamber will also be travelling to the Sydney in April 2022 to compete in the national championships.

Dairy Young Judges 2019 runner-up Jerry English from North Queensland, Monica Skerman from Queensland Ag Shows and Loka Manu, Near North Coast’s 2019 winner Monica said this was her 15th year with this competition. “All I can say is that these young people represent the future for our dairy industry,” she said. The state ﬁnals will run from 9.30am-3pm. It is a free ticketed event via Eventbrite. Hope for Beerwah Sportsground’s future By Greg Brown THE Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee (BSMC) has been battling bureaucracy for more than two years and the toll has taken it to the brink of ﬁnancial collapse. The committee’s struggle has been with Sunshine Coast Council rigidly enforcing ever increasing levels of red tape and disallowing previously permitted uses of the grounds, which used to bring in much needed funds for the management and maintenance of the sportsground. Much of the problem has stemmed from the simple fact that at some point the function of the land was mistakenly changed on paper from ‘showground’ to ‘sportsground’, which severely limited the types of permitted activities and how they are managed. Committee president David Weil said the council don’t pay for the upkeep of the grounds, or the water used, or the repairs and improvements to the facilities. “The considerable costs are borne by the management committee, for which we have to raise funds through charging groups using the grounds,” Mr Weil said. “Over the years this has been done by hosting events like the Beerwah

Charity Sports Day and Christmas carols, clubs such as caravan groups for basic camping on the grounds, pony club events and overnight stays by selfcontained caravan and RV campers.” With severely limited income over the past two years, the BSMC is almost at the end of its ﬁnancial tether, with the threat of insolvency looming if the situation isn’t addressed. However, the committee hopes there is now a light at the end of the tunnel, with a process about to begin to legitimise – in the eyes of the bureaucrats – the range of community and organisational uses that have been regularly occurring at the Beerwah Sportsground for many years. The solution is for the council, as trustee of the land owned by the Queensland Government, to prepare a land management plan and submit it to the state government for approval. This will allow the designation of the grounds to be oﬀicially altered to ‘showgrounds and recreation’, giving legitimacy to the uses that have occurred there for the past few decades. This plan will outline what the agreed permitted uses will be under the lease the BSMC holds over the sportsground,

The council engaged the services of consultants CPR Group to undertake the community and stakeholder consultation. The views of the community will be critically important to the outcome as the council will be looking for community support for what the BSMC is trying to achieve, as well as the views of local businesses. “The committee has been working towards a positive resolution for a long time,” Mr Weil said.

“This is something we hope will ﬁnally give us, and the community, some certainty both ﬁnancially and for the use of the facilities. “The committee is encouraged by the talks already had with CPR and council, and the committee encourages the community to have their say when the broader consultation process begins.” CPR Group will canvas key stakeholders directly but hopes to provide a portal through the council’s Have Your Say website for locals to show their support. Bounty Hunters with a wicked arm By Jack Waters IT’S not a sport you would associate with this part of the world, but for students at Beerwah State High School ultimate disc is quickly becoming one of their favourites. The Beerwah Bounty Hunters have spent the past few months honing their skills in preparation for the Queensland Ultimate Disc Association’s (QUDA) Senior School State Championships, which saw them compete against seven other teams in Brisbane last Friday, September 10. Ultimate disc is extremely popular in the United States but the hype has only recently started to pick up on Australian shores. Simply, ultimate disc is played with a frisbee on a long grass ﬁeld with the rules resembling a mix of American football and netball. Points are scored

when a player catches the frisbee in the end zone, like American football, but when players catch the frisbee in the ﬁeld of play they must stop before passing to a team mate, like netball. Although there is no tackling involved, ultimate disc is an extremely athletic sport that requires jogging, short sprints, jumping, good hand-eye coordination and, of course, a good arm. Beerwah State High School chaplain and one of the team’s coaches Mike Turner said the students had been playing the sport in their lunch breaks for about ﬁve years but ut had only recently started taking it more seriously after realising there were re local competitions they could participate pate in. Mike said aside from the competitive factor, it had been a great way to get them active during g their lunch breaks. “Some of these guys have been playing g for a few years but some are e newcomers and they all treat it like a little community,” Mike said. “We play three games a week for seniors, juniors and a mix of both. We also play some student teacher games, ames, which of course everyone loves.” One of the most interesting things about the game is that even at competition level there are no referees.

The Beerwah Bounty Hunters in training for the Senior State School Championships Mike said this was w something that made ultimate disc stand out ffrom other sports. “The big part of ultimate disc that I love is the spirit of the game,” he said. “If there’s a controversial moment on the ﬁeld, con it’s all about the players negotiating with each other. “It’s all about supporting each other and the ab other team, team so much so that we have to elect both a tea team captain and a spirit captain.” Students Studen in the Bounty Hunters team said the they’re hoping to pave the way for the spo sport to become more well-known in the region. reg

September holiday camping at Woodfordia

Farewell to the Mooloolah’s fabulous five! THE Mooloolah State School community will soon be saying a fond farewell to five of its long-term staff members – Pam Day, Jenny Wilson, Jenine Stabler (Raddatz), Jenny Chaplin and Pauline Park. To honour their many years of service and dedication, community members and students and their families, past and present, are invited to attend a special farewell event at the Mooloolah Valley Country Club on Saturday, September 18 from 3-5pm. Mooloolah P&C member Lisa West said the event was a lovely opportunity to recognise the years of commitment and care that these staff members had shown to innumerable students and their families over the years, with some families knowing the teachers over generations. Between them the five staff members have almost 140 years of combined service, with the longest serving member, Pam Day, retiring after 31 years of service. “These ladies have made such a wonderfully positive impact on so many students lives over the years but also, importantly, they have been able to keep the history and past stories of our school alive with their impressive knowledge of not only our school’s history but the history of Mooloolah, which has proved to be invaluable over the years,” Lisa said.

Between them the ﬁve staﬀ members have almost 140 years of combined service, with the longest serving member, Pam Day, retiring after 31 years of service. Jenny Wilson said she felt a mixture of both sadness and excitement as she approached her retirement after 30 years of service with the school.

I have many happy memories of my time here, the students and fellow staﬀ members,” Jenny said. “While it’s a bit sad to be coming to the end of an era, I’m looking forward to the start of a new chapter.” The community is invited to attend the farewell event, share their favourite memories and help wish these wonderful ladies well on their well-deserved retirement. Thumbs up for Glass House wave pool THE consultation phase has ended for the surfing wave pool and tourism facility proposed for the Bruce Highway end of Johnston Road in Glass House Mountains, and the community has said … bring it on! A total of 981 properly made submissions were received by Sunshine Coast Council, with 978 in favour of the development, which is described as a “holistic surfing experience”. The proposal is to establish a wave pool and associated amenities, a wellness centre featuring yoga and meditation, paddock-to-plate food and beverage experiences, ocean and marine protection education, learn to surf classes and surf coaching. However, to be fair, the 978 positive submissions were all generated through a campaign initiated by the development proponents via an automated submission portal on their webpage (www.surfparksaustralia.com. au) and were all worded the same. “Dear Sunshine Coast Regional Council Assessment Manager, I support Surf Parks Australia’s proposed development at Johnston Road, Glass House Mountains (MCU20/0381). This development will bring substantial social and economic benefits to

The high profile names of Ashley (Tugboat) Robinson and property developer Scott Juniper are among those supporting the development. The lone voices against the proposal was from the developer of the other wave pool park proposal at Glenview, Sanad Capital and a resident who lives on Bowen Road concerned that the development won’t enhance the area and will create noise and aesthetic issues. Both proposals (the Sanad proposal at Glenview and the Surf Park Australia proposal at Glass House) have some similarities, with the Glenview proposal for a resort and accommodation complex, restaurants and bars, water theme park and, in a future stage, a surfing wave pool. The main point of contention is that the council has already approved the Glenview wave park and an economic analysis commissioned by Sanad Capital shows that there’s only room for one financially viable surf park on the coast.

“Urban Economics have detailed that a surf park is a regionally/state significant use, with broad and expansive catchment areas,” the Sanad Capital submission states. “Urban Economics indicate that these facilities require the attraction of at least 250,000 visitors per annum (operating year-round) to be economically sustainable. “The combination of these factors confirm that there is no economic need for more than one facility on the Sunshine Coast.” The submission goes on to detail problems they see with the loss of rural productive lands, impacts to scenic amenity and other issues around building heights, noise and site suitability. in PROFILE Pets for Life

PETS for Life is a free community-led program that connects Sunshine Coast pet owners with like-minded, animal-loving volunteers. Starting at the Caloundra Community Centre in 2005, this unique program aims to help residents who may be isolated due to age or disability to continue to care for their beloved pets, while staying connected to their community. Pets for Life ultimately builds relationships and links volunteers with pet owners who require help with tasks such as walking, grooming, feeding and/or medicating their pets. GC&M News caught up with Beerwah resident Jan Moser, the owner of a gorgeous west highland white terrier or westie – Beau. Jan has been involved with the program for the past three years. Q: How did you first get involved with the program? I moved to Beerwah three and a half years ago and a friend in Maleny told me that she’d seen a flyer for the program. The following week I saw a story in GC&M News and contacted the program coordinator. I’m only in my early 60s but have an immune-neurological condition that limits my mobility, so finding out about Pets for Life and becoming involved as a pet owner with a disability has made a huge positive difference to mine and Beau’s lives. Q: How does the program work? I made contact with Caloundra Community Centre and Mark Wischnat, who coordinated the program at the time, came out and met with me and filled me in on all the details. All of the community volunteers are trained and safety (police) checked, which is important to know if you are letting people into your home.

Clare, Billie and Jessica Arico with Beau and his owner Jan Moser It was wonderful. They matched me up with volunteers who lived nearby and we then met to see if we clicked. Since then, our friendships have ﬂourished into lasting relationships and these volunteers have now become friends and part of my extended family. One of the families, Clare Arico and her twin daughters, have been with me since I started, and it’s been lovely to have them be part of our lives. The program has really opened my life up again. It has beneﬁted Beau and has brought so much happiness to us all.

Every Saturday, Clare and the girls come and pick up Beau and take him for a walk or a play in Skippy Park for an hour or so. My other volunteers come once a week and it’s up to them what they like to do. Sometimes they take Beau for a long walk or give him a bath – it’s whatever they like to do to help. Q: What do you love about Pets for Life? The program brings joy to the volunteers and the pet owners. It enhances the life of everyone involved and it provides an opportunity to nurture meaningful relationships, which is important for people who may be isolated or alone through age or disability. Knowing that Beau is going to get a decent walk every week is a huge relief and its wonderful for him to also have extra people to love him and for him to be able to love back. The program has been created with a lot of thought for people’s dignity and respect, and is exceptionally well managed. The program coordinators are always very easy to contact and they also keep in contact with us very well. We also have public and private Facebook groups to connect. I would encourage people to get involved as either a volunteer or a pet owner requiring assistance – I tell people there is no other program like it around. It’s brilliant! Fourth red bench for Maleny

MALENY’S fourth red bench was recently unveiled at Maleny Pioneer Village at a gathering of about 50 people. An initiative of the Red Rose Foundation, supported by local group Speak Up Now – Stop domestic and family violence Maleny and Blackall Range, the brightly coloured benches serve as both a conversation starter to raise awareness around the issue of domestic and family violence, and a timely reminder that domestic violence can be preventable. The local group is a collaboration between the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, the Rotary Club of Maleny and Zonta Blackall Range. The group has facilitated red benches outside the Maleny Post Oﬀice, at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and outside Gone Bonkers in Maple Street. It

The Pioneer Village’s red bench was designed and built by Malcom Baker from the Maleny Men’s Shed who unveiled it with senior sergeant Kate Teasdale, officer in charge of the Queensland Police Service Domestic and Family Violence Unit. Snr Sgt Teasdale spoke briefly about the crucial role of the community being involved with the police to reduce the impact of domestic violence. MALENY Golf Club has a new infinity edge practice green and a permanent home for its fleet of 24 golf carts following the recent completion of a purpose-built storage shed as part of a key infrastructure project. Some spare space in the shed, which can hold up to 32 carts, is being leased to members with carts while the remaining space will be fitted out to provide temporary office accommodation until a new club house can be built. The cart shed is sited on the club’s old practice green area so the project had to incorporate relocation of the 10th tee and a new concrete access path to make space for construction of the new green. Club general manager Stephen Porter said the new facilities reflected Maleny Golf Club’s growth in popularity as a quality golfing destination and an “outstanding effort” by a group of volunteers whose valuable contribution had kept costs down. This included donations of both time and materials. “One of the other great benefits we’ve been able to deliver is on-course space we’ve freed up for some privately owned golf carts which will also help defray our construction costs,” Mr Porter said.

New Wave Fest around the corner THE countdown has started for local non-profit organisation The Modern Generation’s exciting event – New Wave Fest on September 25 in Chevallum. The day will run from 10am-3pm with talks, performances and workshops happening continually over the five hours. There will be three separate venues all in close proximity to each other on the Chevallum School oval – the speakers’ room and art show, the performance tent and the eco workshop. In the performance tent you’ll find some of the region’s best young artists. String duo Reese and Oscar will kick off the day at 10am accompanied by an all-age yoga class run by experienced instructor Kirrilee, also known as the body linguist, to help get you in the right mood for the event. This first performance will be followed by jazz and classical music at 10.30am, musical theatre hits from 11am-12noon, a jazz performance from the Maleny State High School band at 12noon, a bit of pop at 12.30pm, folk at 1pm, ukulele rock and pop at 1.30pm and a rocking performance from local band Criminal Mint to finish off proceedings at 2.30pm. The speakers’ room will feature talks with change makers throughout the day on topics such as youth and climate justice, gaining perspective, creating a movement, youth engagement in the community and embracing change.

These classes will alternate with Japanese furoshiki workshops that show you how to wrap presents with an unwanted piece of fabric or cloth. Outspoken in Maleny THE challenges of arranging events during COVID-19 have not daunted the organisers of Outspoken Maleny, who have locked in their literary events for the next two months with exclusively Queensland authors. Outspoken will present authors Ian Lowe and Luke Stegemann in conversation at the Maleny Community Centre on Tuesday, September 21 at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. Ian Lowe AO has been described as a “bona fide Australian treasure”. He is the author of ten books and innumerable articles, and is currently an emeritus professor of science, technology and society and a former head of science at Griffith University, former president of the Australian Conservation Society and the recipient of the Konrad Lorenz gold medal. Ian will be in conversation with Steven Lang to discuss his new book Long Halflife, a timely and riveting account of the political, social and scientific complexities of the nuclear

‘Kabaret’ will be back industry. Long Half-life tells the social and political history of Australia’s role from the ﬁrst discovery of radioactive ores in 1906 to contemporary contentious questions. The book cleverly reveals the power of vested interests, the subjectivities of scientists and the transformative force of community passion. Also in conversation will be awardwinning Australian Hispanist Luke Stegemann, providing insight into his new book Amnesia Road – a compelling literary examination of historic violence in rural areas of Australia and Spain. Luke is a recipient of the Malaspina Award for outstanding contribution to the development of cultural relations between Australia and Spain. THE Maleny Players are keen to make sure locals know they hope to have ‘Kabaret’, written by well-known awardwinning playwright Simon Denver, return to their stage in 2022. A successful ﬁrst performance was held on July 30 and was well received by the audience. Sadly, COVID stopped the second performance, forcing the Sunshine Coast into lockdown and leaving Maleny Players to postpone remaining performances. The production will be back sometime in the future for those who couldn’t attend in July and those who would like to enjoy it a second time. The Players had many compliments from the audience, including the following from one satisﬁed audience member: “The performance opened with all players on stage, setting the momentum for a wonderful performance. The whole evening went smoothly and was slick. It was pleasant and most enjoyable to the very end. The music was well performed by several talented musicians. “The standout for me was The Highwayman. The performer was focused and emotive, and hardly blinked during this performance. Impeccable timing needed for this piece and that’s

what the audience got. Perfect to the end. The audience participation kept the room lively and involved. “It was brilliant and should be performed again. Caloundra vaccination facility to return LOCAL residents will have greater access to the COVID-19 vaccine when the Caloundra Indoor Stadium returns as a community vaccination location from early October. The centre will take its ﬁrst appointments from Friday October 8 at 9am. It will be open from 9am-5pm seven days a week until early December. Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Yvette D’Ath said more than 2,000 doses would be administered each day on site. “We’re excited to be able to enhance access to the COVID-19 vaccine on the Sunshine Coast,” Ms D’Ath said.

“The Caloundra Indoor Stadium has already proven to be a great venue for the community and re-opening the centre here will make it quicker and easier for more people to get vaccinated. “The new centre will be open to all Queenslanders aged 16 years and over and I encourage everyone to register for their vaccination. “Most people in the 16-59 years age bracket have been waiting their turn for the vaccine. Now it’s time to roll up their sleeves and do their bit to protect themselves, their loved ones and their community,” the Minister said.

New publications by group members include the Poetry of Patty Beecham, a long-time member of the group. Both the Maleny and Beerwah Libraries have a copy of her book for readers. The writers group is about to publish its latest anthology of short stories and poetry, titled Another Book Worm’s Delight – one book, 18 writers, 66 narratives. There is something for every reader in this collection – love and romance, loss, history, ideology, families, fairy tales and even a few furry friends. Sound as a healer AS a music practitioner with many years professional experience I have long valued the role music plays as a form of therapy in the community. People attend drumming circles, sing in a choir or play in a ukulele group with like-minded singing strummers. Individuals attend open mic events to get up and perform solo or with colleagues and friends. There is plenty of evidence around – scientific and social – supporting the value music-making brings to a community. However, it is not just the playing of music that can add value to your life. We know that listening to music, or even simply immersing yourself in music (a soundbath!), can benefit your health too. Being involved in music is good for your health but what if we come back one step from music and consider sound itself, and that includes everything from the ripple of a mountain creek to the hum of a refrigerator. How does sound affect us? Can it perhaps be used to heal physical ailments we might have? The answer is yes. Everything is in a constant state of vibration. Even things that we assume aren’t moving – those kitchen chairs, for example, are made up of molecules and atoms that are pulsating. Every part of our body resonates to a different frequency. To a sound healer, some ailments will show that parts of the body are out of “vibratory” alignment and sound “treatment” might be the best and certainly the least invasive “medicine” one could have for it. Modern western medicine will have a drug treatment, of course, and it might bring temporary relief but it won’t necessarily get to the root of the health issue. Sound healing possibly can but let’s not leave modern medicine out of this consideration as sound does have multiple uses there too. We know, for example, that ultrasonics are used to bombard rogue cells and crystallised minerals in the kidney similarly can be dissolved by sound waves. Over the next months I’m going to look further into sound and how we use it to aid our health, both physical and mental. As an afterword, it is important to say that sound healing is not for everyone. A treatment that works for one person may not necessarily work for another as the different parts of the body – the organs, bones, tissues and different bodily systems – all resonate at distinctive frequencies and individually our frequencies will not be the same. Also, we need to acknowledge the value of intent or belief in healing. If a person believes in the treatment they are having or feels they are being healed there is more likely to be an improvement in their health. Two people receiving the same care for the same illness can have different outcomes if either of them doesn’t believe in the treatment. Stay tuned! Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. Emily wins jazz bursary HIGH school music students from across the coast performed at the Caloundra Power Boat Club on Saturday August 28 vying for the 2021 Youth ‘n’ Jazz bursary presented by the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club. Maleny State High School year 11 student Emily Davies was declared the winner of the vocal section and presented with $1,000 to pursue her musical passion. An additional $500 cheque was presented to her school’s music department. Fellow Maleny High student Shelby Rose Johnson was also one of the eight finalists in this year’s music bursary. Each of the finalists performed two songs supported by professional band Rick Best and The Day Trippers to enhance their performance. Brian Fane, a life member of the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club, said the students were outstanding in their presentation, choice of songs and confidence in front of an appreciative audience. “The students were judged by a panel of industry professionals who had to look for small nuances to differentiate between each entrant, which was not an easy task as they each performed brilliantly,” Brian said.

Small Halls date claimer Festival of Small Halls has announced that Darren Hanlon and Kelly Brouhaha will be the guests of fifteen communities for the October Queensland Spring Tour 2021, which will include the Mapleton Hall as the final stop on the tour on October 31. After years of touring the far-flung corners of Australia and the greater world, Gympie-based Darren Hanlon has carved a sacred place in the hearts of many who cross his path with his candid and charming music and storytelling. He is known for his engagement with his audiences and having the ability to make a large crowd feel like they’re in a lounge room amongst friends. FRIENDS of the ABC and the Greens Party are no doubt two very reputable organisations – organisations that would always be totally upfront and not be people who lie or manipulate the truth. I would never think that they would do anything other than stand by their strong convictions and values. I believe that these people with such strong convictions and beliefs would never use air conditioners in their homes or oﬀices. They would live totally without the back up of coal-ﬁred power coming into their domains. I can never see them driving a petrolpowered car and they would also baulk at the use of EV cars such as Tesla until there was something concrete done to dispose of the toxic waste from the large lithium-ion batteries. As at this stage only about 5% are even looked at for recycling and also the fact that the lithium comes from mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo child labour mines. As a follow on from my faith in these two reputable organisations and their values and beliefs, I totally believe that those who you see around with ‘I vote Greens’ and ‘It’s my ABC and I vote’ would also whole heartedly stand by these strong values as listed above and, in addition, would never take any money from the government through Centrelink etc, as there is a strong chance that money would come from the royalties of coal mining. Environmentally important local land

DOES anyone know what or if environmental impact studies were done on the small parcel of land that Beech and Myla roads border at Landsborough?

I was surprised to see land starting to be cleared and roads put in. We have seen and have photos of many species of wildlife that live and survive in this small area. Feather tail gliders amongst other possums, a snake that was all black except for a bright blue (not red) stomach, owls, microbats, all sorts of birds, frogs of many breeds and a small group of wallabies. The land is steep in places with a honeycomb surface as water runs and has carved tunnels just under the surface. On the corner of the block is a small grave site, where there stands a small memorial plaque to the people whose graves were moved there, as the land they were buried on previously was disturbed. All this is in a single block of undeveloped native bushland. So I was very surprised and saddened to see the developers move in and it happened so quickly. I wondered if any environmental studies had been done? I was hoping that being so close to Australia Zoo and the fact it’s home to so many native species that the Irwin family would consider purchasing it as a Land for Wildlife property. Beerwah development plans

FIRST, thanks to GC&M News for keeping us up to date with the current position regarding the refusal by the Sunshine Coast Council for the proposed development by Coles Property. Then I would like to congratulate Coles Property for not accepting the council decision to block this development. Perhaps the Planning and Environment Court will have a less parochial view. For most councillors, who don’t even live in the hinterland area, to make a negative decision aﬀecting our lives smacks of a loss of democracy.

For council to say that the development “was too far outside the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme” is laughable when, at the drop of a hat, they can change the scheme. For example, the “proposed” change to a number of properties in Hardwood Road at Landsborough from rural to residential, against the will of the people. While we are still waiting to hear a “decision” from council, the developer is so assured that his money-making venture is to go ahead that he has already delivered drainage and sewerage pipes to the site. With the Coles development, the council’s excuse that the town will be segmented is just piﬀle. Talk of pedestrian access and public transport are again all furphies. Most people visit the shops by car as can be evidenced by the disaster which is the Beerwah Marketplace precinct. To be able to spread the numbers of visits to other locations is a plus for the population and is certainly in the best interests of the community. The best interests of the community would be further enhanced if we didn’t have to travel to Caloundra to visit a Coles store. Council will no doubt dip into the public purse to fund their response to Coles. Fortunately, Wesfarmers has a substantial kitty and maybe before this gets to the court stage we can be rid of this dictatorial mob who are well passed their use-by date. James Aitken Landsborough

Glass House Mountains, are you gaining weight?

WELCOME to the new Glass House Mountains housing developments: Mt Ngungun Gardens, Crookneck Cascades, Mt Beerwah Heights, the Tibro Green. No, these are not currently approved (that we know of) but is this the future that we seem to be rapidly rushing towards? It seems like every

possible piece of vacant land within the Glass House township is becoming in-fill development. Similar growth in adjacent rural pockets just outside of town are appearing as well. The Glass House Mountains National Parks are a major drawcard in the region for Australian and international tourists, as well as being a popular playground for our Brisbane neighbours. Its unique attraction continues to be well marketed. The mountains regularly feature in online and promotional videos, tourist brochures and stories promoting the Sunshine Coast, and for good reason. The national parks borders clearly show each national park area is isolated from each other park area. The Mt Ngungun park area is unconnected to the Mt Coonowrin park area, which is unconnected to Mt Beerwah, etc. The increasing urban development and national parks borders expose a dilemma. Given the current demands, it is not inconceivable that the township will grow to reach and bump up to many of the national parks borders in the future. Accepting that there may be plans to establish connecting walking tracks between park areas, if established these will just be narrow walking corridors in surrounding suburbia. Without even daring to think what this invasion means for the natural flora and fauna of the area, what does such urban development actually look like? It looks like this. For comparative purposes, note the heights of Mt Tibrogargan 364m and Mt Ngungun 253m, while the height of Mt Coot-tha in Brisbane is 302 metres. I assume we all know what the area adjoining Mt Coot-tha looks like. Is the sacrifice of the Glass House Mountains area’s uniqueness worth a future that looks like that? Vaccine hesitancy

PERHAPS some of the blame for the slow uptake of the current vaccines can be applied to the visual media. Trypanophobia (yes I also had to look it up) is described as “the fear of needles” and it is a fact that some 10% of the population suﬀers from this phobia. On every occasion when the subject of vaccination is discussed on TV, the visual is always one of a needle being inserted into the arm. Often countless times. As an ex-serviceman, I can recall grown men fainting in the line up to be inoculated during basic training. Perhaps the media would like to do us a favour by desisting from this practice. I HAVE to completely endorse Mr Hoban’s comments regarding the total lack of assistance and engagement he received from the Member for Fisher, Mr Andrew Wallace, in dealing with his communications problem (Local mobile coverage woes continue, GC&M News August 31). I have had a similar but unrelated experience. Mine was that I was told I couldn’t get an NBN service to my home just 2km from the Maleny CBD and in a largely residential area. An inferior satellite service was my only option. This started in July 2020 when I approached Mr Wallace’s office about this situation. After six months and eight emails and telephone calls, I gave up with his office after receiving only generic responses saying how busy he was, accompanied by what was happening re COVID. Then the government announced another multi-billion dollar spend to upgrade NBN speeds available for those with an existing NBN service, leaving those without a service deeper in the doldrums – very much a have and have not offering. I wrote to the Prime Minister about this inequity. By contrast, after a chance meeting with a Brisbane MP in January 2021,

he invited me to write to him about my problem and this inequity. He referred my letter directly to Communications Minister Fletcher with a copy to me. Things began to happen in April. After a few false starts, I now have an NBN wireless service connected to the

Heritage listed local hall needs you! MOOLOOLAH Valley Public Hall, built around 1905, is thought to be one of the oldest public halls in the Sunshine Coast area today. Located on the northern side of Bray Road in Mooloolah, the beautiful heritagelisted building is opposite the turn off to the Mooloolah State School in King Road and sits opposite the Mooloolah Community Centre, which was the original school building. Over the years, the hall has been a cornerstone of the community. With its rich and vibrant history, it deserves to be appreciated, celebrated and maintained in the future by ongoing use and with more involvement and management by members of the community. Many may not realise the hall is owned by the community. Since 1905 it has played a significant role in countless community activities and social events, including popular dances that drew crowds from miles around for many years, as well as all the major celebratory gatherings for the town. If the old floorboards could talk, there would be many a tale of romance and intrigue over the years.

Mooloolah Valley Public Hall committee secretary Bev Smith said that while modern times had brought changes, the hall remained the property of the Mooloolah community and it now needed new direction. As a community-owned hall, it is run entirely by volunteers, including some who have been involved for decades. However, none of them are getting any younger. Bev said the committee would welcome the energy and enthusiasm of new members to get involved in the ongoing management of this beautiful community asset. “The present committee deserves the right to step aside safe in the knowledge that the hall will continue to be cared for by others in the community,” Bev said. “They have generously given years of voluntary community care. However, they are now ready to pass the baton on. “With community help, input and new ideas, the Mooloolah Public Hall will remain in this community for future generations,” she said.

Chainsaws to restart at Maleny Woolworths site A DEVELOPMENT application quietly lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council last month will give many locals flashbacks to 2004. It was a time when the national spotlight was on Maleny and hundreds of protesters battled the authorities – and the infamous Deen Brothers – to save the trees along the Obi Obi Creek site from being cleared to make way for the Woolworths supermarket.

It seems the chainsaws are about to roar to life again at the site where tourists and locals now come to gaze at cavorting platypus in the clear flowing waters of the Obi Obi Creek. The application is for an operational works permit to clear vegetation, almost all of which was planted as part of the original Woolworths development approval conditions. Property owners Uniton Pty Ltd lodged the application in early August, along with an arborists report from Consult Arborist Pty Ltd. Prepared by principal arborist Matthew Duncan in early March, the report documented his independent

visual assessment of the trees close to and impacting the Woolworths building. “The object of the assessment was to identify trees that are, or had been until recent works, directly impacting the side of the building causing maintenance and structural concerns,” Mr Duncan said in his report. This included trees along the west and north sides of the building fronting the Obi Obi Creek, as well as to the south along the boundary with the Maleny Hotel. He also made recommendations on what works were required to be carried out “on the grounds of health and safety, good arboricultural practice and to reduce infrastructure damage”. Of the 28 trees assessed, Mr Duncan sounded the death-knell for 17, including five individual or groups of piccabeen palms, five blue quandongs, one lilly pilly, two Illawarra flame trees, one weeping lilly pilly, two bleeding hearts and one “unidentified” tree. These trees, many assessed as mature or early mature, are earmarked for total removal. A large bunya pine was spared, with pruning recommended instead of total removal. The trees on the northern boundary were growing from the Maleny Hotel side and Mr Duncan recommended pruning these back. These included privets, camphor laurels and slash pines. The council is now assessing the application. As it is code assessable, no community consultation will be accepted. It was great to hear from Aleisha and her amazing team that the fridge has been working a dream so far. I was so excited to hear this outcome and I hope this is something we can roll out to all schools across the area. The next parliamentary sitting week, from Monday September 14, will be one to remember as the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill will be debated by the Queensland Parliament. The VAD Bill seeks to give terminally ill and suﬀering people a choice at the end of their life and has been drafted very well by the Queensland Law Reform Commission, presenting a wellbalanced and considered Bill for us to vote on. I’d like to thank all constituents who contacted me about this Bill as I think it’s so important to take the time to know your local politician’s views on such a personal subject. I believe that everyone should have the choice of dying with dignity – and this Bill does just that. It gives a choice for those who have a terminal diagnosis to decide whether this is the right decision for them.

A friendly reminder that strengthening and repair works will be undertaken on Dalton Bridge this September school holidays. COVID-19 community vaccination centre returning soon

PLANNING is under way for the Caloundra Indoor Stadium to return as a community vaccination location. The centre is scheduled to open on Friday, October 8 and will run until December. Council, along with Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services, will keep the community informed when this vaccination centre is due to reopen but, in the meantime, all eligible residents should register now to be vaccinated.

Combined COVID-19 and ﬂu vaccine trials Your blood makes a diﬀerence

THE University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) is seeking volunteers to take part in clinical trials for an Australian-first study to assess a combined COVID-19 and influenza vaccine. The trials will take place at USC Clinical Trials clinics in Brisbane, Moreton Bay and on the Sunshine Coast. For the trials, the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine will be combined with an influenza vaccine candidate, NanoFlu, to provide a two-in-one immunisation. Some trial recipients will receive both vaccine candidates separately and some will receive the combined vaccine. The level of immune response of participants will then be assessed. USC Clinical Trials is seeking healthy volunteers aged 50-70 years to take part in the research. The study will require participants to attend one of the three clinics up to

eight times over six months. Eligible participants will be paid for their time. Dr Nischal Sahai, who will oversee the study at USC Clinical Trials South Bank, said the combined proteinbased influenza and COVID-19 vaccine candidate was expected to have some important advantages over existing vaccines. “We are initially targeting older adults for this study because this population bears a disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality for both influenza and COVID-19,” Dr Sahai said. USC Clinical Trials director Lucas Litewka said this was the first time in Australia that a COVID-19 vaccine had been combined with an influenza vaccine to present a single jab approach. THE Red Cross Donormobile is in town this month, so why not give blood. It can make a critical contribution to 22 diﬀerent medical treatments and positively impact countless lives. Just one blood donation can potentially save as many as three lives. Queensland’s Chief Health Oﬀicer Dr Jeannette Young said the state’s blood stocks were low. She invited everyone to roll up their sleeves and give blood at their local donor centre or Red Cross mobile blood service van. “I would urge everyone who can give blood to reach out to their local donor centre and make a booking,” Dr Young said. “Donated blood can only be stored for 42 days and we need tens of thousands of donations every week, so it’s vital we give blood regularly.” It doesn’t matter what type of blood

donation a person makes – blood, plasma, platelets – as it can all be donated just one week after having the COVID-19 vaccination. “After you get the jab, go online and check your eligibility to give blood then simply make an appointment. It’s a very easy experience from start to ﬁnish, plus it doesn’t cost a thing except an hour of your time,” Dr Young said. The Red Cross Donormobile will be in the district from September 20-24. It will be at the Maleny Showground on Monday from 7am-2pm and Tuesday from 11.30am-6pm. It will then travel to Beerwah, in Simpson Street near Shell Service Station, on Wednesday from 10.30am-3.30pm, Thursday from 11.30am-6pm and Friday from 7am-1pm. Blood can be donated every 12 weeks. Garden delights for green thumbs at Maleny THE hugely popular Gardening on the Edge weekend may have been cancelled this year due to COVID restrictions but this hasn’t stopped the Maleny Garden Club. The club is more determined than ever to bring gardeners together and has organised a stupendous one-day Spring Fair event on Saturday, October 2 at the Maleny Showground from 9am-4pm. The Spring Fair will encompass, everything wonderful that people have grown to love from the Gardening on the Edge weekends and at one easy-toaccess location. The fair, be centred in and around the Maleny Showground main pavilion, will include a main garden market and expo, and entry is free. You’ll ﬁnd an abundance of beautiful – and often exotic and rare – pot plants, seedlings, trees, shrubs

and produce, many of which you won’t ﬁnd anywhere else. Some of the quality expo displayers and plant sellers will be Camellia Glen, Clouds End Farm Cottage Plants, Cut Above Tools, Darryl Banks Orchids, Earth Life - Soil Balance, Fairhill Nursery, Forest Heart Eco-nursery, Kerkin Garden Favourites, Mountain View Day Lily Nursery and Ramesa Nursery. If like me you’re a fan of sharing your garden with native fauna, then here’s a few suggestions on providing habitat for our native animals. The bulk of plants used in mainstream native gardens are cultivar Grevilleas, Banksias and Bottle Brushes. These are all amazing flowering plants that add colour, variety and are great nectar sources, but if they are the dominant plants in your native garden, then aggressive birds such as Rainbow Lorikeets and the Common (or Noisy) Myna will often dominate to the exclusion of more timid birds. My tip here is to add different layers to your planting such as local native groundcovers and grasses; a diversity of local shrubs and trees; and bushier planting that give the smaller or timid birds somewhere to hide. Traditional responses to insect attacks in your garden is to spray an array of chemicals - however, the vast majority of our native birds either will eat insects if the opportunity arises or live wholly on insects. These insects although appearing a nuisance to us are crucial food for many of our feathered fauna. Spring Orchid Spectacular

Orchids to delight SEPTEMBER is a busy month for local orchid lovers. The Glasshouse Country Orchid Society’s Spring Orchid Spectacular is on September 24-25 at Beerwah Community Hall and the glorious award-winning Orchid Grove garden in Buderim will be open on Saturday and Sunday, September 18-19, from 9.30am-4.30pm. Visitors can discover the amazing tranquillity of Orchid Grove where every available space is ﬁlled with a visual feast of colour, unique creations and amazing beauty. Orchids abound on trees and rocks, and hanging and nestled amid antique garden items.

THE 2021 Spring Orchid Spectacular, hosted by the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society, is on again at the Beerwah Community Hall (next to the Library) on Friday-Saturday, September 24-25. The visually spectacular event will feature prizewinning show orchids from across the Sunshine Coast, locally grown orchids from society members, plant sales, a raﬀle and more. Plant sales are always a popular aspect of the weekend show, with many plants and accessories available for purchase, along with society members and orchid experts on hand to oﬀer advice and tips. Doors open 8.30am-4.30pm on Friday and 8.30am-2.30pm on Saturday. Admission $3, children free. COVIDSafe measures will be in place. For more details contact Sue on 0411 723 882.

Kath Smith and Lynette Evans scored 4 against Wallace Roy 6 while Bev Sockhill and Janelle Wilson made 6 against Sally Adams and Helen Andrews 9. Sunday August 29, with storms predicted but not arriving, saw Janelle being farewelled. Janelle has been a great supporter of the club and is the current division four club champion. We wish her well in Canberra and she will be sorely missed. Play and celebration don’t mix and scores for the day confirmed this. Nick Cram and Janelle won a close game against Stuart Craig and Val 7-6. Sarah, with the monkey off her back, put the pedal to the metal after her partner Ken departed midgame to claw back a win against Miggy Mackey and Vince 10-6. The last Lochwood game for 2021 was played on Wednesday September 1 at home against Bribie who fielded Greg Whymark, a state player, and Ken Wallman. IN the ﬁrst Ball Games Carnival since 2005, Peachester State School has commenced a tradition that many of the staﬀ and parents enjoyed as children themselves. The original trophy, which was started in 1994, was reclaimed by Stanley House, who were the trophy winners in 2005 as well. The students learned tunnel ball, leader ball, captain ball and under and overs in preparation for the carnival. The students look forward to making it part of the new tradition at Peachester School and are planning ahead to 2022 when Coochin House will get the chance to show their talents.

We had a little shower at the start, but the sun came out and it turned out to be a nice day. It was a good match, we fought and there were lots of running and rallies. But it was very hard tennis. Score was 1 - 7 sets, 24 - 42 games. Team was Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper, Annie Quarmby and Maree Hooley. Wednesday, September 8: Witta Wagtails versus Maroochydore TT’s. Great morning of tennis, good rallies, good sportsmanship, thank you to all players. Cynthia Garvey and Gerry Gabriel were victorious with a 6 - 1 victory in one set, but the team were not able to repeat this level of performance in the other sets, the Maroochydore TT’s being the victors on the day.
