When the call went out for zombies, werewolves and frankenstein’s monsters for this year’s school musical at Beerwah High, there was a very excited response. Students successful in the audition process have been rehearsing hard for most of Term 1 in order to strut their stuff on Thursday, May 22 and Friday, May 23 in the musical comedy, ‘Bats’. Shaylie Brown dominates the stage in her portrayal of a pushy Hollywood director and Josh Topfer plays Mr Dracula’s medical student son who comes home and to his horror, finds the place filled with townspeople pretending to be monsters. Look out for Corey Wallace in his role as the enterprising bank manager, while Jordan Dron and Nic Torr provide an amusing portrayal of the bickering Mr and Mrs Dracula. Isaac Shepherdson is the hilarious Inspector of Police, and not to be outdone, Isaac Whan and Sharlie Dal Broi take stupidity to a new level with their very silly characters of Nosher and Nasher. See Luke Jones as you’ve never seen him before as the imposing original Count Dracula and Josh Lammeretz as the shuffling faithful servant, Igor. Of course there will be some cameo roles

Paula and Bridgette Powers (affectionately known as the Twinnies) have for the last 16 years, provided a 24/7 local rescue and rehabilitation service for Australian native birds. Renowned for their rehabilitation work with Pelicans, people throughout Australia contact the Twinnies seeking care and advice for injured birds. Although they predominantly specialise in seabirds, they never turn away any injured animal from their not-for-profit, volunteer run organisation. At the moment, they are operating on borrowed time as the land they have worked from for the last three and a half years is up for sale. After approaching all levels of government from local through to federal for assistance in purchasing the land to continue the service – no one could help. So the family has decided to put it out to the people to support and assist in raising the $465,000 needed to purchase the Rehabilitation Centre. Their hope is to buy the land, set up a permanent wildlife legacy that includes more carers and volunteers and ensure that the land belongs to wildlife for eternity. Already the Twinnies have received an incredible anonymous donation of $150,000 towards securing this goal. All they know is that an older couple familiar with their rescue work have generously donated all their life savings towards this cause. In a bid to continue to raise the money, a number of fundraising activities throughout the year have been planned including a fundraising auction on Friday, June 6 at the Maleny RSL. Hoping for some ‘people power’ they have also signed up to givenow.com.au which enables secure donations that are tax deductable. Another incentive is to encourage supporters to enter the Dick Smith Foundation charity allocation (where $1 million dollars has been pledged this year) and nominate Twinnies Seabird and Rescue.
The Twinnies are looking forward to the Charity Family Fun Day Next Sunday, May 18, along with Tegan, Kathy and Wayne Lather from Wildlife Emergency they will be holding a Charity Family Fun Day from 10.00am – 4.00pm. They are hoping to raise $10,000 and the event promises to be a jam packed day filled with activities. Landsborough twin sisters, Tegan and Erin Hickey have, like many lives in our community, been touched by cancer. They know how important it is that the community continue to rally and support the Cancer Council Queensland to help raise funds for cancer research. Erin, was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma about a week after the girls turned 17. It started innocently enough, a bump near her collar bone; she thought it was a simple break, a sports injury from an earlier football game. The truth was much worse. Tegan said it was a cancerous lump; diagnosis finally came through after about a month of research and testing. None of us wanted to think it was actually cancer, but I guess in the end all of us had the idea in our heads, forming slowly, though none of us wanted to mention it out loud, she said. “You see, Erin and I were both starting our last year at Beerwah High School when Erin was diagnosed,” said Tegan. “I was so excited, we were finally going to finish the adventure we had started 12 years ago, at least that was what the plan had been. “And then it changed dramatically. While she was at doctor’s appointments, or getting chemo, I was stuck sitting through math lessons and english, trying to concentrate while worrying about how Erin was doing,” she said. Tegan looks back on that time and describes
herself as being 'a mess', she felt totally lost, and realises just how strong and determined that Erin was. Fortunately Erin has been in remission for nearly three years and the girls are focusing their energies on fundraising. The girls describe ‘Colour for Cancer’ as dying their hair, the colours that appear on the cancer support ribbons to raise money for foundations. Colour 4 Cancer is a public event, taking place at the Beerwah Pub, on May 17 at 2.30pm. There will be a raffle held with a nice goodie basket, while the hair dye works its magic. Tickets will be $1.00. They also have a Facebook page, just search: Colour For Cancer and give it a like, all the information you need will be on the page. The girls hope to see as many happy faces as possible.

The first ‘Kid’s Market’ was held recently at Mooloolah on a sunny Sunday morning and featured 65 Stalls, each of which were run by kids. The successful event was the brain child of 11-year-old local, Zoe Barwick. Stall holders included the Young Buddies Support Group - who had a space set up so that kids could draw pictures to be sent to asylum seekers in Brisbane and Manus Island. Other stall holders included a bush lemonade stand, homemade West African ginger beer, East African Chai tea, second hand toys/books/ clothes/video games, potted plants, awesome crafts, hand crafted and loop band jewellery, fairy eggs, helium balloons, art, lots of baked goodies, cookies, organic popcorn, honey, cupcakes, lemon tarts, mini pizza’s, cakes and even included homemade dog biscuits!

Organiser Zoe and Isaac Barwick selling South African Ginger Beer Another highlight was a live performance by the Mooloolah School Spanish Dancers who really gave the markets an especially festive feeling in their bright coloured skirts. Zoe’s mum Jessica Raintree said the community support for this event was fantastic with Mooloolah IGA paying for a huge Jumping Castle, and Mitre 10 providing a generator for the jumping castle as well as spray paint and materials for the kid's market signs. David Terry represented the Landsborough scouts and used his mapping skills to put together a site plan for them. Local kids and families helped with painting the signs and putting them up around the place. The Lions Club did a sausage sizzle and the Community Centre got behind the event and supported the event with insurances and other paperwork. “I think everyone agreed that it was a fantastic day and the question we have heard most since the event is “when is the next Kid’s Market?” Jessica said.

Biggest Morning Tea local events
The latest exhibition at the Landsborough Historical Museum, part of the National Trust’s Heritage Festival for 2014, is ‘A Letter Home’ and highlights the role of migration in shaping the social and cultural life of the local area. The display uses mannequins and historical items from the museum’s collection to illustrate the lives of the people of the area during the 1890s, the 1920s soldier settlements, through the Greek and Italian migrations of the 1950s and the ‘swinging 60’s’, to the present day. The exhibition is the product of many hours work by volunteers and friends of the museum, from the discovery of the mannequins in a paddock in Samford Valley two years ago, to the research and design of their costumes and of the five dioramas within which they sit. The exhibition will continue for several months and can be seen during the museum’s opening hours: 9.00am – 3.00pm on Wednesdays, Thursday, Fridays and Sundays. The museum is always pleased to hear from anyone who may be interested in joining them as a volunteer. There is plenty to do! Just call the museum on 5494 1755.
Maleny’s not so tidy Church A new program for the family called ‘Messy Church’ is happening at St George’s Anglican Church Maleny on Sunday, June 1. It is a program for people of all ages to engage together around varied types of craft. Contributed by Helen Wilkinson The Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre offers a space for community members and groups to meet and hold events, as well as providing support services to our local community. Over the years, many of our hall chairs have become worn and broken from use, so we haven't been able to hire the space out to larger groups because of lack of seating. And the less we can hire the hall out, the less emergency relief money we have to offer people in need. We approached the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre (aka Beerwah Recycling), who came to our rescue by donating 20 new chairs. These were delivered last week. Now the Neighbourhood Centre can offer hall hire for up to 50 people! We would like to thank staff and management at the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre for their quick response to our problem and for their generous donation. They provide lots of support to our community, in ways many of us probably don’t realise. If you would like to hire the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre call 5438 700 for information.
The group took the opportunity on Easter Monday to tackle the trachyte track of Mt Tibberroowuccum. The walking group, in association with the Heart Foundation, meet every weekday at the Beerwah Library at 6.30am. The walks take in various parts of the area and usually take one hour. Every so often the group will do longer walks, such as Mt Ngungun, the Ewen Maddock Dam walking track, Dularcha National Park and a few more. Anyone is welcome to join the group. Dogs on show in Beerwah Soup luncheon time Sunshine Coast Kennel Club’s next Dog Shows are on Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18 commencing at 4.00pm on Saturday and 8.30am on Sunday. The show on Saturday is a Championship Show. Judging on Sunday begins at 8.30am with the Open Show and the continuation of the Championship Show getting underway at 9.00am. All events are held at the Beerwah Sportsground, Roberts Road, Beerwah. Entry is free. These shows will have seven rings operating simultaneously on Saturday, and 14 rings on Sunday. There will be a very good entry of dogs covering numerous different breeds. Many of these will be the regular favourites but there will also be unusual and rare breeds shown as well. If you have never seen a Dogue De Bordeaux or a Lagotto Romagnolo, then come along – they have some entered. Judging is alphabetical by breed so Afghan Hounds and Australian Terriers will be on early while Welsh Corgis and Weimaraners will be in the ring later. The club encourage any and all to come along and enjoy their show. Exhibitors are more than willing to chat about their breeds and the showing is quite amazing and interesting to watch. There will be ‘doggy product’ stalls and other stalls of interest. Catering is provided at the canteen and also a coffee van on the grounds. When winter comes, the Beerwah Catholic Ladies annual Soup Luncheon is never far behind. The Auxiliary is pleased to announce that this year’s Soup Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, June 3 at 12.00noon. As is customary there will be a speaker of community interest beforehand at 11.00am. This year’s speaker will be Dave Erbacher from our local SES. Celebrating Under 8's Week
School News Beerwah dance students shine
Beerwah State High School’s 34 dance students, who have been rehearsing since the beginning of the year, recently performed at the Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod. The purpose of Dance Company is to improve their technique, performance skills, their ability to work together, and overall to have fun with fellow dance enthusiasts from Years 9 - 12. Dance Coordinator, Jessica Rossberg said she couldn’t be more proud of them and what they have achieved in what has been a very tough competition. “They achieved a 1st for their jazz dance and tied 2nd with their contemporary dance,” she said. “Some have never even performed at an eisteddfod before or seen other schools dance.” One of the proud parents and school staff member Peter Voigt summed up the evening by saying he’d never been so proud of their school. “Bias aside, the two performances by our students were simply outstanding,” he said. “The commitment, timing, emotion, and skill that they infused into their performance was breathtaking, and an absolute credit to the dancing team. “There were no standouts or tricks by the talented students, both dances offered solid units that performed as one and sold the story. “While watching our two teams perform, it was easy to forget that they were a group of teenagers who had put everything together in their spare time before/after school.” So congratulations to the teams and to their teacher Jessica – job well done!

We are again extremely grateful to Bob for his continued support in welcoming our small contribution to his business. The children make fortnightly deliveries of parsley to Bob for his meat displays. The children brought some delicious sausage rolls (made with herbs from their garden) and some sausages which were cooked when the children got back from their excursion for morning tea and lunch. GCCC's Open Day - bigger and better than ever This year’s Open Day at Glasshouse Country Christian College is going to be bigger and better than ever! For the first time GCCC is having a free petting zoo for children in Prep to Year 2. These cuddly critters will be right next to the school’s new Agricultural Science stand. Introduced in 2014, Agricultural Science is offered to Year 10 students and will be offered to students in Years 11 and 12 in subsequent years. Another first is a three dimensional Sponge Bob Square Pants jumping castle which is also free to children in Prep to Year 2. There is absolutely no educational reason for this attraction; it just sounded like it would be a lot of fun for all the young ones visiting on the day. This year there will be more student demonstrations and performances. These will
happen in the theatre, outside the library and in several of the classrooms. A full program of events is on Glasshouse Country Christian College’s website, www.gccc.qld.edu.au on the home page. Last year there were hot buttered scones with jam and cream, but this year the Hospitality Department is going all out by putting on a free high tea. GCCC students do a terrific job of leading tour groups, so once again they will be showing off the school’s campus to visitors. There is something quite special learning about a school through the

Today's pensioners contributed up to 50 years To build (and fund!) the lifestyle we all know today; Then, pensions were seen as a nation's reward For all that they'd done – and paid – along the way. But now, we're told, the days of ‘entitlement’ are gone, Except for the elite (who make the rules), of course; No ‘user pays’ or having to earn rights, for them It’s luxury benefits still – on the public purse! Pension levels today below the poverty line Just a quarter of the nation's average wage; This is the reward for all of that toil And destined, it seems, to stay that way! More restrictions on pensions, lower increases, And we'll all have to work longer ... that's the plan! But not for our ‘pollies’ and the ruling elite Their ‘entitlements’ grow – and will stand. While they're chauffeured around in cars paid by us, Their massive ‘super’; and perks OUT of office grow; Retirees can but look on ... not in envy, but disgust At how attitudes to our oldies can change so. I write in reference to some of the irresponsible pooch owners in the Mooloolah area, that walk their dogs along King Road in the early hours of the day and evening, this road seems to be a dumping ground for their pets ‘previous night’s dinner’. T’is interesting to watch these people looking around to see if anyone is watching them as the dogs arches its back and drops it’s mess / smelly ‘brown logs’ onto the road or footpath and then not making any attempt to pick it up. Last Saturday morning I counted nine logs, six in front of the school, pool and kindy and another three further down King Road. How awful it must be for the mothers to step out of their vehicles and onto one of these smelly logs. As we all know there is nothing worse than the smell of dog droppings in the car, or on your person. Maybe they should all band together and scoop the ‘poop’ up and return them back to their rightful owners. It would be great for Council to impose a hefty fine on these irresponsible pooch owners. Trucks, please slow down
Last week I was very pleased to see a police speed trap at Glass House Mountains State School as I have been trying to get attention put onto this issue for quite some time. I decided to go over to the police and thank them for turning up and to make sure that they were looking at the issue of speeding trucks that has become more dangerous recently. To my horror and dismay I was told that the officer with the speed gun had just clocked a speeding truck at 48km in the 40km zone and that at his discretion he decided not to book that truck for speeding because his equipment had a 2km error rate, so he felt it was fair not to record the offence. I then asked why he would let that truck off even though he was still at least 6kms over if you take into account this equipment error. He was without an answer. No doubt if it had been a car and easier to pull over, he would more than likely have booked the car. What I haven't seen ever is a truck pulled over on Coonowrin Road – why is that? The trucks were going a lot slower this morning – I assume that they radio each other to avoid the police up ahead. I have previously put this issue to Andrew Powell who advised that it was ‘not appropriate for him to get involved’. Why is everyone who should fix this problem looking the other way? Do we need to lose a child’s life for the police to do their job properly? Also I would like to know where did our flashing lights go? Concerned Parent Glass House Mountains

We put some of the concerns raised in the above letter to the member for Glass House, Andrew Powell and this is his response.
‘I have been working with the Beerwah Police Station for the past few months on the issue of trucks and other vehicles speeding through the school zone outside Glass House Mountains State School, after having received enquiries from a number of residents. I have never advised that I was not able to assist with this issue; on the contrary I advised my constituents who enquired that I would need to work with local police, as I am doing. The officers maintain a strong presence at the school zone, however we realise that this is not fully addressing the issue. I understand that they are currently pursuing alternative methods of speed detection and penalty enforcement. The flashing lights in the Glass House Mountains school zone were installed by the then Caloundra City Council over a decade ago. When the signs became in need of renewal, council consulted extensively with a number of community leaders over whether replacements were needed, or if they could simply be removed as the cost of replacement was quite high. Members of the school and wider community agreed that the lights did not need to be replaced.’ Andrew Powell Member for Glass House

Halls Creek concern
Recently in an article from the local Chamber of Commerce, concern was expressed about the effect of further development down from Caloundra South on the long-term viability of business in the towns of the railway corridor. The investment needed for infrastructure for such development, spent instead in the railway corridor, would be a revitalising influence and provide much-needed services. Whereas any large-scale projects alongside the Pumicestone passage has to have environmental impact on the water quality of the Passage. There are two major issues at stake here - the survival of local businesses, doing it tough right now, and the survival of Pumicestone passage as a local environmental treasure. Neither of these issues should be on the back burner, especially for our local representatives. Quite frankly, recent events here and interstate make me just a bit cynical as to the outcome when the interest of the average citizen comes up against the influence and money of developers. Reported in the news is that all benefits are reduced, but stopping youth services entitlements until they are 25 must be looked at seriously. Over 65 to 70 means less jobs available. No benefits to a 16-year-old means the family cannot cope, they can't give their child school needs, they can't give them pocket money, so what are they going to do? They are going to steal aren't they? Crime becomes rampant to the family, trying to pay for the other three kids around the same age makes them a victim of poverty. I'm a swinging voter but believe it would be in the best interest of this country to execute the same ‘disillusionment of government’ as was in the Whitlam days! It was with much pleasure I, along with Joan Horgan from Friends of Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens, unveiled the exciting new bushwalk at the gardens, adding a new experience to the extensive network of walking trails. The new 1.6 km long upland bushwalk leads fit and experienced walkers across serene creek crossings and steep forest slopes and complements beautifully with the current 5.7 km of paths and trails which help visitors explore and appreciate the garden’s diverse bushland environments including wetlands, fern glades, forests and rocky creeks. More great news for visitors to the gardens is that a new mobile site is being finalised that will provide information and background about the centre’s sculpture gardens directly to an individual’s mobile device.

Community Wild Dog Baiting Program May 5 - June 6
Council, in partnership with Bio-security Queensland, is supporting a community based coordinated Wild Dog Baiting Program. Failure to control wild dogs can result in livestock losses, attacks on domestic pets and the loss of native fauna. Landholders have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land and participation in this program is an effective way to help meet this responsibility. Areas included in the program being run on private property include Bald Knob, Beerburrum, Beerwah, Bells Creek, Coochin Creek, Crohamhurst, Elaman Creek, Maleny, Peachester, Wootha, and Yandina Creek. Sparky is a mixture of many small dogs, Mini Foxy, Jack Russell and Schnauzer to name a few. He likes to go to the dog park and beach, and play with his human brothers and sister.

Lucky who is a bit of a mix of breeds including Shih Tzu / Maltese had an unhappy start to life, being badly treated and then dumped. We rescued him about five years ago and he is now spoilt rotten and gives us hours of pleasure with his Zyzz lovely nature, hence the name ‘Lucky’.

The RSPCA’s TOP 10 quirky animal cruelty call outs that weren’t RSPCA Inspectors take every job very seriously, but sometimes all is not as it seems. 1. A person called about an abandoned goat that had been left unfed for days, which was actually an abandoned mattress in a paddock. 2. A man rang about his dog which had been ‘hexed’ by his neighbour to attack him when he said a certain word. He wanted the RSPCA to “find out the word from his dog.” 3. A woman rang in anger to complain that her neighbours had left their white Bulldog in a yard without shade and when she left a note in their mailbox telling them to provide their dog shelter; they had put up a beach umbrella for the dog. The dog was a statue. 4. A highly distressed woman called about a mini crocodile in her backyard which was threatening the lives of her children. After receiving a photograph from the caller the animal was identified as a blue-tongue lizard. 5. An inspector went to rescue a bird that was heard trapped in the roof for a number of days. It was in fact the smoke alarm battery signal to change the battery. 6. A caller rang about a cockatoo that was so stressed in its small cage that it would not move. An inspector found an ornamental bird in a cage. 7. A gentleman called from a supermarket and said he was in the presence of an animal killer. Someone was buying head lice treatment. 8. Two security dogs had managed to get themselves ‘tangled’ on a tether. When the Inspector arrived at the property both dogs came running out without any problems. The Inspector had to explain to the informant the process of dog mating. 9. A woman rang at 10.00pm worried that a
possum up a tree may not be able to get down. 10. Several complaints of two cows in a paddock with no shelter. These are two steel cows in a field just outside of the town of Nowra on the NSW South Coast. There is a very serious side to this however. Last financial year the RSPCA NSW Call Centre received over 14,600 calls made by concerned members of the community reporting cases of animal cruelty. “Keeping an RSPCA Inspector on the road fighting animal cruelty costs $450.00 a day which is why the RSPCA is calling on all pet lovers to come out and support our annual Million Paws Walk on Sunday, May 18,” said Steve Coleman, RSPCA NSW CEO. Fundraising is an essential component of the Million Paws Walk and this year RSPCA NSW hopes to raise $300,000 to assist the 30,000+ animals that it cares for each year. “The best part about all the Million Paws Walk events around the state is that funds raised stay in the local community to assist the RSPCA Volunteer Branches and regional shelters to take care of local animals,” Steve added. Bullock powered Timber Waggon
National Simultaneous Storytelling Time Celebrate National Simultaneous Storytelling time on Wednesday, May 21 from 10.45am at the Beerwah Library. Libraries and schools across Australia will be reading the same book at the same time. Get ready for some gigantic elephant fun! Staff will be reading ‘Too Many Elephants in this House’ by Ursula Dubosarsky. This is an interactive story time and craft suitable for children under eight years. The timber waggon, located under an old shed at the back of the Bankfoot House property, has recently undergone extensive preservation and restoration work. The original working vehicle was owned by William Smith Burgess of Bankfoot House and was used to ‘snig’ logs from local bushland and transport to the nearest sawmill. This waggon, like many others of its time, was driven by a ‘Bullocky’ who controlled up to 20 bullocks linked with yokes and chains. The ‘Bullocky’ usually walked beside the team on the near or left side and carried a long handled whip with an eight foot lash. The Burgess waggon was last used in the mid-1930s when the Great Depression left ‘Bullockies’ without an income and they could not afford to keep their bullock teams. The earliest forge mark on the axles of this waggon show a manufacturing date of 1907. The waggon was originally painted with a mix of linseed oil and red lead oxide paint. Some restoration of the waggon was carried out by the Ferris family in 1980 when the centre pole and caps on the bolsters were replaced and repainted. Much of the metal hardware has since been cleaned and preserved by the Friends of Bankfoot House. The Sunshine Coast Council, thanks to cultural heritage levy funding, recently arranged for the wheels to be restored and repainted by a wheelwright. Several new wooden spokes and fellies were custom-made to replace those components eaten out by white-ants. The restored timber waggon and other historic objects in the Bankfoot House collection are expected to be on public display towards the end of 2014. Note: Waggon is intentionally spelt this way.

Additionally, our body utilises the minerals, vitamins and protein it derives from the foods we eat to repair itself from day to day trauma. There are also dietary supplements for arthritis sufferers. Chondroitin can draw fluid into the cartilage, improving shock-absorbing ability. Fish oils help with controlling inflammation in the body and glucosamine is effective for the long-term relief of osteoarthritis pain. Move Well: Exercise in general is vital in preventing or delaying the onset of arthritis. Our bodies are designed to move, and our joints are designed to move through their full range of motion regularly. A few types of exercise that are very beneficial are vigorous walking, yoga, pilates, swimming, cross training and water aerobics. Please consult with your health practitioner before beginning any exercise regime. Sleep Well: Our body heals and repairs itself at night. Thus reduced sleep time equates to reduce healing time. Things that reduce good sleep are: stress, caffeine, alcohol, medications, digesting heavy meals and shift work. Poor sleeping posture (like sleeping on your stomach) and inappropriate bedding (mattress and pillows) can also cause and increase arthritis. Arthritis, like any disease, is a sign our body is not functioning properly. Treating the symptoms of arthritis may offer you pain relief but will never improve your situation, only prolong its duration. Focusing on the cause and helping your body to heal itself will prevent arthritis from happening in the first place and give you the best outcome for a healthier and productive life.

Happenings Out and About Kid’s Market a roaring success!
Local Mooloolah girl, Zoe Barwick aged 11, wanted to have her own market stall as she really wanted to earn some extra pocket money. Finding no markets that were particularly friendly to this idea (too expensive and issues with insurance) she decided to start her own Kid’s Market. With the help of her mum and plenty of support from the local community the first market was held at Martin Rungert Park in Mooloolah on May 4. See story page 8.

Things 2 Do Quilt show and raffle
Mountain Quilters will be holding their biennial quilt show on May 17 and 18 at the Peachester Hall. The show opens at 9.00am on both days and finishes at 5.00pm on Saturday and 3.00pm on Sunday. The cost of entry is $5.00. Visitors will be able to view numerous quilts and vote for their favourite; vote for the best challenge piece and also vote on the best table runner. There will be a range of vendors selling quilt related products. The highlight will be the drawing of their raffle - a beautiful quilt called ‘Garden Party’. This quilt was shown at the Qld Quilters Show in October and won 2nd place. The proceeds of the raffle will be donated to Sunny Kids.
Bringing history to life As part of Council’s Heritage Month Festival celebrations they have organised Maleny archaeologists including Steve Chaddock, and Dr Andrew Fairbairn as guest speakers at the Maleny Library on Tuesday, May 20, 5.30pm – 6.30pm. Steve and Dr Fairbairn will talk about their experiences on a dig in Konya, Turkey. Steve works for Timeline Heritage and Dr Fairbairn is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Queensland. Come along and learn what archaeology is all about and listen to their stories. War has been declared on the Sunshine Coast and the region’s worst weeds are the targets. The ‘War on Weeds’ is taking place throughout May, as residents swap weeds from their gardens for free native trees. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the weed swaps were underway right across the region. The two local events are at Beerwah on Friday, May 16 from 10.30am – 11.30am at the back of Caralan Way / Emma Place Park (off Roberts Road) at Beerwah. Then at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, on Tuesday, May 20 from 9.00am – 11.00am at 148 Mountain View Road, Maleny. “The ‘War on Weeds’ is part of council’s Community Nature Conservation Program that assists local volunteer groups in their work restoring bushland, wetlands, coastal foreshores and waterways projects across the Sunshine Coast,” she said. “It represents an ongoing partnership between council and the community in protecting and enhancing biodiversity on council owned land at the local level through actively involving and engaging volunteers in habitat restoration. “Hundreds of volunteers will be undertaking ‘working bees’ at the various weed swap sites across the region and providing useful advice to residents who turn up to swap their weeds for native trees.” Cr McKay said the ‘War on Weeds’ was a fantastic opportunity for residents to play an active role in improving their local environment. “Over 70% of the invasive environmental weeds in South East Queensland are actually escaped garden weeds,” she said. “Everyone has a role to play in looking after our environment and removing weeds from the garden and replacing them with native trees is one great way to make a positive contribution. Information on locations, dates and times for weed swaps is available on council’s website. Posters are also on display in local libraries and council’s customer service centres.

Harpullia pendula This is a small to medium sized hardy and fast growing tree and with its dense shady crown is an excellent specimen plant that is suitable to plant in a variety of soils. It is found in drier rainforest regions from mid New South Wales to Cairns in north Queensland and as a result is used as a street tree, although it needs protection from frost when young. Tulipwood is a hardy tree that tolerates full sun. Although Harpullia pendula can reach a height of 15-20m it is usually found to be 10 metres tall. A stunning feature of this tree is the seed pods which are a two lobed capsule, orange/red in colour with shining attractive black seeds within the capsule. These are a food source for the King Parrot, Speckled Line-blue and Bright Cornelian butterfly.

Facing life A couple of years ago Archaeologists discovered Apollo’s temple in Hierapolis Greece. Hierapolis is mentioned a couple of times in the bible. For those familiar with the Bible, it supplied the luke warm water to Laodicea, it also is the final resting place of the apostle Thomas. According to ancient eye-witness reports, Apollo’s temple was an impressive place to visit. A priest of Apollo would take a huge beast like an ox or a bull and would start descending into a cave. In a short while the ox would drop dead and the priest would emerge from the cave either unscathed or touched by the god. As they uncovered the temple, and exposed this cave a couple of birds landed next to it - and died. They figured out that running underneath this temple was an underground fissure of poisonous volcanic gas. Since it is heavier than air, the gas hung around the bottom of the cave and since that is where the snout of the beast was, it breathed in the gas while the priest who stood higher breathed air. You can imagine how scared people were of the underworld and the gods, after all look at what they can do! It’s into this region that Paul writes to a group of Christians in a small town named Colossae. He writes to say don’t worry, Jesus is bigger than all this. He is the one who holds the universe together. So don’t be frightened, be encouraged and strengthened in your faith in Jesus. Today so much of the world seems like a scary place. People get sick, they face personal problems, we read the papers and it seems like there is a world out of control. That’s why we need to hear Paul’s reminder that as sad as this is, we need to remember that Jesus is much bigger than all of this. That’s why we should follow and trust Him.

Beerwah State School Cross Country Contributed by Bronwyn Reid The Beerwah State School Cross Country was held on Wednesday, May 7. The day started with the students in Years 4 – 7 competing in a challenging cross country course that took them around the school. The nine-year-old students completed a 1km course. The 10-year-old students completed 2km’s and the 11, 12 and 13-year-olds had to complete a 3km course. The weather was perfect for running and all competitors were keen to complete the course. After morning tea, it was time for the Preps – Year 3’s to run their cross country race. It was a wonderful event with all students trying their very best to complete the course. 34 |

Contributed by Jenny Kelly Some of the girls got frightened away by the early morning clouds, but we still had 68 come out to play a Single Stableford for trophies kindly donated by Lady members Val Turner and Karen Gannon. The showers stayed away and Gail Gundry played great golf to come in with 37 points to win Division 1, from Cathy Stone on 36 points. Division 2 winner with 35 points was Brid John, from Marjory Pavitt who came in with 34 points. NTPs went to Jasmin Parkes on 2, Lydia Costello on 5, and Brid took out the 16th. Division 1 on the 18th was Shirley Cooper, and Oriel Lyon won Division 2. The ball rundown went to 31. Hopefully Huey continues to be kind to us, and we keep having glorious golfing weather. Stay safe and good golfing.

On Thursday morning the ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Kerry Capern and Kevin Beasley with 44 points and the runners-up were Graham Anstis and Graham Nicholson with 20 points both in games 1 and 2. The afternoon game was won by Peter Astbury and Rodney Sharpe with 52 points and the runners-up were Mike Rentoul and Ken Alchin with 26 points in game 2. In Round 1 of the Men’s Pairs Club Championship, R Scullion and J Tatum 23 def M Dawes and J McSwain 13; M Ellul and B Malcomson 21 def B Burton and J Timm 16; C Sinton and G Richardson 26 def K Beasley and P Hughes 17 and P Astbury and G Nicholson def C Jones and D Hayes. Hinterland Boxing Club
Contributed by Stephen Pitt On Saturday, May 10 HBC sent a team of four athletes to the Acacia Ridge Hotel for the Queensland Novice Titles where athletes box off in bouts with experience between 0 - 3, 4 - 7 and 8 - 15 in their weight and age divisions. First up saw Dana Coolwell who again stepped up in weight and experience to box against a strong NSW opponent in the 44 Kg Junior Division. This was a rugged and fast paced fight with Dana finding his range towards the end of the first round. The second round saw Dana's opponent tie Dana up and brawl using his weight advantage to great effect. The third round continued in similar fashion however Dana made a good account of himself scoring with the cleaner and more skilful punches. Dana went down in a very close decision, showing he has the potential to go far in the sport and is prepared to fight anyone on the way. Next up we had Chaska Coolwell for his first fight boxing against an athlete from Cairns. Chaska put in an awesome display of heart and determination in a very tough fight. From the opening bell, Chaska pushed forward throwing punches in bunches. The second round saw Chaska use good foot work to set up his punches to great effect. Chaska worked hard all the way to the final bell to become the QLD Novice, Junior 60 kg, C Division Champion. Next up Tiarna Collins, in her first bout, stepped up in weight, age and experience to box against an Australian Institute Of Sport boxing scholarship Athlete in the 64 kg Female Elite Division. Cages were rattled from the opening bell as Tiarna landed some solid shots on her opponent. The second round saw Tiarna receive a standing 8 count that was questionable and was probably the difference in the fight. Third round Tiarna finished strongly boxing with skill and determination to finish the fight that resulted in Tiarna going down in close decision. Tiarna accounted for herself in a way that suggests she has a future in the sport. Lastly Mitchell Chalmers boxed an athlete from Bundaberg in a willing and entertaining bout. This was a very competitive bout with both boys trading some heavy leather from the opening bell. The second round saw Mitch's opponent land his straight lead hand to good effect. Going into the final round Mitch needed to find something and he did with some strong bursts of punches that tilted a close bout in Mitch's favour to become the QLD Novice, Youth 75 kg, C division Champion. It was an awesome night for HBC with our athletes stepping up and performing strongly. We will next head to the Inala PCYC Tournament on May 17.

Success for Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club’s Junior
Contributed by Jill Forster Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club is proud to announce that Tomas Lunt has been selected in the Qld 12 years and under School Boys side to play at the national carnival in Darwin in June (starting on Monday June 16, and finishing on Sunday, June 22) playing against sides from NSW, VIC, SA, NT and the ACT. Preceding the carnival, Tom has a week-long training camp in Bundaberg starting June 6. In preparation for the Nationals, Tom will be playing winter cricket in a Brisbane based competition. Tomas Lunt was introduced to cricket in 2008 at the age of six participating in the Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club’s Milo Have-A-Go cricket program. The program is a fun way of introducing cricket to both boys and girls aged between five and eight years. Tomas’s love of cricket saw him continue with the club playing in the lower junior grades enabling him to play competitive cricket on Saturday mornings. During last season (2013/14) Tomas played in Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club’s Under 14 team and also played a few Under 16 games whilst still only 11-years-old. Tomas has represented the Sunshine Coast region twice in the 12 years and under School Boys playing five days of 50 over cricket at each event. Getting to Darwin (including the training camp in Bundaberg) is expensive so Tomas is conducting a raffle to help with these costs. The raffle prize is an autographed ‘Brisbane Heat’ cricket bat.
