ow! I am not sure if I can claim that I spent quite a lot of time gardening this past weekend; however we definitely spent lots of time in other people’s gardens admiring what were clearly total labours of love. Gardening on the Edge, which included three gardens in Maleny and three gardens in Flaxton, was a visual spectacular for those passionate about gardening. And while there is no doubting the hard work of individual property owners and their support crews, there was also plenty of behind the scenes work undertaken throughout the past year to bring the event together to run so smoothly. Dot Jupp, who has been the event convener for the past four years, has done another wonderful job of working with a great bunch of Maleny Garden Club members to make this such a successful community event. While the joy of the event was very much focused on the gardeners in our midst, the financial benefit will once again be shared with many local community groups. Some years the event has contributed up to $20,000 to a range of community groups, which is another wonderful outcome for the community. Regards,

When Knitfest's Festival and Creative Director, Debs Swain, started planning this year’s festival themed ‘Under the Sea’, she knew she'd have to pull a crack team of Yarnbombers together who were up for the task. Carole Kellow, one of the team's longstanding members, was thrilled and nervous when Debs asked her to make the panels for this year's street lanterns as well as many of the sea creatures in the diorama they have created this year. The huge diorama is a Davy Jones locker scene called ‘In an Octopus's Garden’. After her children left home, Carole started crocheting for charities like Busy Needles. One day, she found some yellow wool and made a 'Minion' beanie for her granddaughter who loved it so much, she asked if her Gran could make 26 more for her classmates for Book Week at school. She has been making novelty beanies ever since and her grandkids let her know which characters are trendy. Carole loves making all the Under the Sea creatures and has created a lot of the patterns herself, which she shares with other members of the Yarnbombing team. The Festival on July 8 - 9, needs about 60 men and women volunteers so everything runs smoothly, plus a few extras to help set up the event on the July 7.

Christian College show success Contributed by Jade King and Mandy Ward The Maleny Show is the ideal way to showcase local produce and prize winners begin early at Glasshouse Christian College. Prep students won first place for their Raw Energy Sticky Date Slice! First place prizes were also presented to Year 2W for their roast beetroot hummus and Year 1W for their traditional hummus. Year 2G won the Grand Champion ribbon and trophy for their goat’s milk ricotta and the judges were bowled over when they discovered the champion cheese was made by such young competitors. Year 2G also won first place for their olive and orange tapenade. Year 1G received a second place for their delicious chocolate sauce and 1W obtained a third for their salted butter. In Secondary the GCC Agricultural Science students excelled in every way. The Year 10 and 11 students presented Plant Nutrition and Technology in Agriculture to crowds in the Small Farmers’ Tent. On the competition side, the most successful category was produce with two Grand Champion ribbons, 15 first places, six second places and six third places. These achievements have taken students the entire semester as they planted out seeds and seedlings of a massive range of fruit and vegetables. For the first time this year the students also entered in the Poultry section and came away with Grand Champion Plymouth Rock Rooster

A few of the students also practised at being Poultry Judges in the Novice Poultry Judging Competition, and certainly got a taste of how detailed judging can be! In the cheese section the Year 11 students, after begging to make cheese again this year, received a Gold and a Silver for their Fetta and Ricotta made under the guidance of Mrs Julie Peters, Head of Hospitality at GCC. Of all the achievements GCC is most proud of its Agricultural Science students for volunteering to assist the Maleny Show Society with various jobs throughout the show. It’s one thing to compete for prizes but it is so much more rewarding to give and help others.

While we were at the Maleny Show recently I caught up with Show Steward Glennis Barber who has been a steward at the show for 32 years and has been the show judge for around 18 years.
Glennis agreed to pick it up from the Maleny Post Office so it could be considered. His determination paid off as he was awarded with a special judges’ commendation in the ‘Other Variety’ for his Zebra Cake, as well as taking out the Steamed Plum Pudding category. As a result of a history of anti-social behaviour being reported at Gardner’s Falls in Maleny, including a platypus being harassed to death last January, and culminating in a community petition calling on Sunshine Coast Council to do something about the worsening situation, Cr Jenny McKay called for a report into the management of the falls reserve at a council meeting in March. At the time, Cr McKay said that it was drawn to her attention by local residents and tourism providers that Gardner's Falls is in a very rundown and unmaintained state. “Unfortunately, due to its popularity it has become over-loved and, as a result, a number of incidents have occurred that have caused public safety concerns,” she said. “These activities, coupled with the dual state and local government responsibility, requires that a report come before council to address and manage these issues.” In response, council staff will present their findings to the ordinary council meeting this Thursday, June 15, at the Nambour Chambers. According to the report to be tabled, complaints have included smelly toilets; vandalism; graffiti; broken bollards, barriers, gates and glass; litter issues including illegal dumping; water quality (resulting in animal deaths); swinging off ropes; uncontrolled dogs; camping; fires; illegal parking; signage (both prohibition and education); overcrowding, including emergency vehicle access being hindered as a result; loud music;
anti-social behaviour; and drunken behaviour. As part of the investigation, council officers spoke with police. Although there were few recorded crimes, QPS reported that the area is a ‘hot spot’ for the Maleny Police Station and the location does rank highly regarding ‘calls for service’. To address the issues raised, the report proposes that council develop a Landscape Plan and Management Plan for Gardner’s Falls that will be used to “holistically guide future development and management of the area”. The report asks for a $20,000 allocation to develop the plans in the 2017/18 financial year, with an estimated further $50,000 being required for short term interim works. It is proposed that the planning will look at: • public safety – emergency vehicle access, car parking, closing the car parking area at night, rubbish removal and cleaning – including consideration of smart bin sensor technology • anti-social behaviour – crime prevention through environmental design assessment, access to help – signage, park signage and environmental education • compliance – local law enforcement (regulatory signage and enforcement), state law enforcement • site capacity, and • implementation – capital costs including whole of life, operational ongoing costs, cost benefit analysis of recommendations. Community engagement is proposed to be undertaken as part of the Landscape Plan development process.

Mushroom development for Sahara Road Glass House Mountains may soon be producing mushrooms, if a recent development application is approved by Sunshine Coast Council. SJW Mushrooms Pty Ltd has submitted a material change of use application for a 22 hectare macadamia farm they own at 241 Sahara Road, Glass House Mountains to allow it to establish a large mushroom farm, including the ancillary packaging of the mushrooms. The farm will also involve making mushroom compost (substrate), pasteurising and conditioning the compost, using this compost to grow and harvest mushrooms and selling the remaining unused compost to other mushroom farms and selling the spent (used) compost to other business for reuse (e.g. dairy farmers and landscapers). The property, a mix of productive macadamia trees, native vegetation and open space, is directly adjacent the north western side of Mt Ngungun The site currently features an existing detached dwelling, nine hectares of macadamia farm and associated shed structures, vegetated wetlands and associated waterways, and tracts of native vegetation. However, according to the development submission documents, portions of the site will remain undeveloped and will allow for the protection of these sensitive areas of environment. The large pocket of nationally significant vegetation located in the southeast corner of the site and associated with the Environmental Management and Conservation zoning will remain untouched as part of this development.

Additionally, a large portion of the macadamia trees will be retained to act as a natural buffer and to screen the buildings. The proposed facilities for the mushroom farm include an admin office, an enclosed mushroom growing shed, an area for the production of compost and storage of its ingredients (these being enclosed bunkers, tunnels, filling hall, two storage sheds, gypsum and litter storage) and an employee carpark with approximately 62 spaces. The proposed facility will still be visible from on top of Mt Ngungun, but the application proposes that this can be minimised through retention of existing mature vegetation, building separation and building appearance. In terms of traffic generation, it has been estimated that the development will generate approximately 120 light vehicle trips per day (60 staff) and 20 heavy vehicle trips per week (up to two heavy vehicles per day). OK, so let’s talk about our men! It is very obvious that men and women differ in the way they each express their emotions. Scientifically it has been proven that men tend to use the left side of their brain, which is where reasoning lies, whereas women tend to use the Leanda Weynton - right side of their brain, Naturopath ND and which is attributed to Yoga Teacher emotion. So how do men communicate their emotions? Men may experience their feelings through physical complaints. It’s not uncommon to see men experience their feelings through body aches, pains and health complaints. Why does this happen? Because as long as men keep busy through work and play, they can cut off their feelings. Without being busy their feelings and needs surface, and may be expressed through physical symptoms. Part of the problem for some men may be that they have silenced their feelings for so long that they haven’t developed resources for handling them when they do arise. Such unplanned, unexpected emotion can often prove overwhelming and lead to health concerns. These may include: • Unhealthy eating habits - weight gain or weight loss • Low moods, anger or frustration • Low sexual desire, stamina and drive • Physical aches and pains

Art in the garden, a children’s play and learning area, bushfood displays, walking paths, solar garden displays, a community garden and more is on the list. Great news for Beerwah Sportsground Contributed by Helen Weil The Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee has been successful in their applications for funding grants. The first of these was from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund for $5,808 to upgrade the canteen facilities. With this money, and some of their own funds, the committee has been able to replace the two chip fryers, install a salamander for heating/grilling, and purchase a new drinks fridge. Soon there will also be a nice large oven to replace the small one presently there. All of these improvements will enable catering for events to be efficient and hassle-free.
The second success was in the Major Grants from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council for $5,000 to install a shade sail over the children’s playground. This was seen by the committee as a priority for the sun safety of children and parents using the playground. Work on this will commence in the very near future and should be completed well before summer is here once again. So, all up, things are looking up for the Beerwah Sportsground. The management committee is dedicated to providing a first class facility for the use of its member groups and the wider community. Ninety years celebrated

Contributed by Pam Innes When members of St Thomas' Anglican Church Mooloolah celebrated their 90th anniversary recently, they invited past parishioners and Mooloolah residents past and present to join them for an afternoon in the Mooloolah Hall. This was followed by an inspiring service in the church presided over by the Archbishop of Brisbane His Grace Phillip Aspinall to an overflowing congregation. He is seen here cutting the anniversary cake watched by some of the members of the Mooloolah congregation and Fr Tony Halstead who takes services at 9am each Wednesday.
Bushland Group Contributed by Gordon Reddek The Coochin Creek Bushland Group will be having our next working bee on Tuesday June 20 starting at 7.30am and ending at 11am-ish. We are a volunteer group that spends time caring for the Upper Coochin Creek Environmental Reserve that runs along the bank of the Coochin Creek from the transfer station to the Beerwah State High School. During a recent fauna survey in our reserve we came across a large patch of ‘mother of millions’, a very invasive weed that should not be growing in the reserve. We plan to remove that patch of weed in the next working bee. We will also be mulching in the area where we have been revegetating. As always, anybody wishing to learn more about weed identification and removal, and bushland conservation is welcome to join us. This work is carried out in collaboration with the Sunshine Coast Council as part of their Community Nature Conservation Program. All equipment required is supplied and tea is also provided. Wear good sun protective clothing and footwear suitable for hiking in the bush. We meet at the Caralan Park Gate. Take Roberts road and about 300m from the Resource and Recovery Centre turn into Caralan Way. Thirty metres further, turn right into Emma Place. For some baby-boomers the 1960s may not seem that long ago. It’s now 50 years since the events of 1967 made the news. Do you remember when Prime Minister Harold Holt was feared drowned, when Tasmanian bushfires killed 62 people, when postcodes were introduced, when the polio vaccine was introduced, and when the Beatles released the album ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’? At Bankfoot House, in 2017, we will celebrate 50 years since Jack and Mary Ferris took up residence at the historic house, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast. Jack and Mary had purchased the two acre property in 1964 from Mary’s brother, William Isaac Burgess, and they moved from Brisbane to the Glasshouse Mountains after Jack’s retirement. For Mary it was a homecoming as she was born in Bankfoot House (1902) and lived there until her marriage to Jack in 1925. The day of celebration is Sunday July 30, 2017, when the Friends of Bankfoot House welcome all descendants of the Ferris family along with the local community to an afternoon tea from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. For catering purposes please RSVP to one of the contacts below, by July 19. Photos and memorabilia from the Ferris era will be on display in the Mary Grigor Centre as well as historic postcard photos of the beaches on the Sunshine Coast. Contributed by Gweneth Brooks What an enjoyable morning we had last Thursday. Once again we met in the new meeting hall situated within The Church on the Rise building on Beerwah Parade, Beerwah. A random thought that I asked the members and visitors to think about was “Life is what you make it”. Members gave some very good points to think about concerning this subject. Charlotte Herring gave a talk concerning what happens when there is a sudden power blackout and an elderly person with slight movement disabilities, living alone, is caught seated in an electric chair and has a call to nature. Quite funny, but it gave cause to think of things that occur that the majority of folk would never think about. In such an emergency just who do you call for assistance? Kids Dig It! Medieval family fun!
Due to popular demand, the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology will once again host a medieval themed event designed especially for kids and families in the lead-up to the Abbey Medieval Festival. Kids Dig It! Medieval Family Fun Week will run from Monday June 26 to Friday June 30. This hands-on event is a hall-mark of the Abbey Museum's educational experience and is designed to teach kids about life during the medieval era in an exciting and highly interactive way. Contributed by Valerie Beattie After two weeks of hard competition, Glasshouse Christian College students have earned the college a place on the second step of the podium in the French Language Perfect Competition for Queensland. More than 135 schools took the challenge of translating French words to earn points for each correct answer. Students who reached more than 500 points received an award for their exceptional work and achievement. Glasshouse Christian College students continue to increase their personal best each year with an ever growing total tally of certificates. This year, more than 112 out of 409 GCC French students received a certificate. The Language Perfect Competition was open to every school offering French, not only in Australia but around the world, and more than 1,801 schools worldwide participated. Glasshouse
Christian College finished fourth in the 251-500 students category. Ironically, the prize for the winning the French competition is a pizza party, but none of the students were complaining!

This popular event brought out so many amazingly dressed superheros and villains. Thank you to all the teachers, volunteers and students for attending. Under 8s celebrate Approved soccer training for kids aged 18 months -7 years
Contributed by Michelle Lenz Mooloolah State School recently celebrated its annual Under 8s Day for all the local children’s community groups, as well as the younger school students. The school had visitors from the local C&K Kindy, Mooloolah Valley Playgroup, storytellers from the Caloundra library, the local fire brigade and police officer Susan Lowndes. Celebrations started with a parade in the hall, followed by performances from the school band and
choir and dancing from the Spanish Dancing team. Activities on offer included painting and decorating rocks, playdough, collage, face Kyrone Johnson having a painting, tuggreat time o-wars, biscuit making, tubs of slime, parachute games, construction, stories and a whole lot more. Highlights of the day for the young children and students included having a turn of the fire hose, climbing into the fire truck and getting to hear the siren of the police car when it arrived.

Introducing Silvia Thomas Silvia Thomas is a highly qualified teaching professional who brings 30 years’ experience to her position as the early childhood teacher at Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre. Silvia has a wealth of knowledge behind her, and over the years she has worked in a range of different types of educational settings including long day care and preschools, community based and privately run kindergartens. She has lectured at TAFE in early childhood studies and is constantly engaged with new developments in her industry to ensure that she provides an excellence of teaching that benefits her own passion and the nurturing of her students. Hinterland based since 1998, Silvia has thoroughly enjoyed sharing her excitement for learning with the young children of the area and she is now entering her fifth year of teaching at the Glass House Centre. Focused on running the ‘School Readiness Room’, Silvia loves engaging with the four and five year olds as she helps them build the skills and knowledge to ensure the smoothest transition possible to ‘big school’. Involved in a key role at the centre, Silvia also loves the positive and supportive interactions between staff members, as well as the connection to the families who attend the centre. “I love the leadership we have here at the centre ... and the staff – we really are like one big
family. The other ladies are always supportive and they all have great senses of humour! I really do love coming to work every day!” says Silvia. Coming from a part Italian heritage, Silvia is always keen to incorporate multicultural appreciation and can always be counted on to provide insights for the children into the importance of other heritages and cultures including the richness of our Australian Indigenous culture. Professional development of the teaching staff is a high priority supported by the centre to ensure the best possible learning environment and to further the skills of staff. Recently Silvia attended a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) training intensive conducted by the Queensland University of Technology and the Queensland Science Museum. She has also attended the Jamie Oliver Cooking School to gain additional knowledge towards implementing the recent ‘Paddock to Plate Vegetable Program’ which proved a huge hit in the school ready room, as well as an ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) workshop as well regular attendance at early childhood learning industry conferences. A big highlight of recent weeks has been the installation of a brand new interactive ‘Smart Board’ which is proving to be very exciting for the school ready children. Other recent projects have included learning about the life cycle of lizards (including watching them hatch!), building with project blocks and using counting and matching shapes skills, as well as using problem solving skills to make ‘monster trucks’. With an aim to providing complete social and emotional preparation for school, activities in the
school ready room are focused on encouraging independence and self reliance skills. Building ability and confidence, developing sound decision making choices and encouraging children to be comfortable to ask for assistance if required are some of the skills the children develop. The truth about Adani Mine
It’s the claim that just won’t die – that Adani’s Carmichael coal project will generate 10,000 direct and indirect jobs. Federal Coalition ministers and the Queensland Government have been making this claim for years, and the media frequently prints the figure. This claim has been debunked many times before, most notably by The Australia Institute, which quotes Adani’s own expert, Jerome Fahrer, who told the Queensland Land Court: “Over the life of the Project it is projected that on average around 1,464 employee years of full time equivalent direct and indirect jobs will be created”. That the Adani project would create so few jobs is hardly surprising. Adani’s CEO continuously boasts that the Carmichael Project will be the most autonomous in the world, saying: “When we ramp up the Carmichael Mine, everything will be autonomous from mine to port. In our eyes, this is the mine of the future.” India’s Minister for State Power, Goyal, has also acknowledged that the cost of solar power is now cheaper than coal in India, creating the risk that the Carmichael Project could become an unviable stranded asset. So why is the Turnbull Government even considering extending a $900 million taxpayer-backed loan to Adani to build the railway linking the mine to Abbott Point, given all this? I have recently returned from Lebanon where I went with Open Doors to do the Muskathlon and to visit the Syrian refugees in the camps. I agree 100% with your argument! Whilst in Lebanon, we also met with a local partner who is working with displaced Syrians: their main duty being to organise emergency/basic needs such as shelter, food and water, medical supplies, etc. Their goal is to keep families in their own home environment/culture where and whenever possible.

This is seen as being the preferable strategy as opposed to 'propping' them up in the many refugee camps across the border in Lebanon. I met with a number of refugee families in the camps in Lebanon, mostly Muslim background believers. They kept asking the church, "Why are you helping us?" (Because sadly their fellow Muslims are not helping them). The Christian church in Lebanon (as we saw it) is large and well-coordinated in terms of providing resources in helping these refugees. (Lebanon has a population of six million of which 1.5 million are Syrian refugees). We met with leaders from one church who are providing monthly food rations and LED lights, milk, babies nappies, mattresses, camp stoves and fuel as well as schooling programs for 300+ children, a sewing project for women, English classes and vocational training in carpentry, cosmetics and basic training for nurses. Through the church, teams of doctors and nurses from overseas volunteer their time for a couple of months to run medical clinics (free treatment for the refugees). The church also provides Bible Clubs and Bible Discovery Groups (for both children and adults), a Charity shop which dispenses clothes, shoes, toys, books, etc, that have been donated by the community, laundry facilities and trauma counselling. All services are provided free of charge for the refugees! This one church is helping 3,000 families. Lynda M Utting Beerwah

I just wanted to say it's such a shame that a huge amount of money has no doubt been spent on this sign when something much smaller and more practical would have sufficed and the balance put towards tidying up and making the roundabout a feature like Caloundra has. Richard Giles (GC&M News June 7) bemoaned the "betrayal and disappointment" experienced by "hundreds" of residents. I'd like to speak up for the silent majority, the tens of thousands of residents who are eager to embrace the faster internet speeds, modern technology, and the preservation our property values. I write in response to Richard Giles’s letter last week, “Decision betrays locals”. Whilst I understand the need to protect our environment and the aesthetics of views, etc, there is an overwhelming need for people in Glass House Mountains to have a decent communications network, including internet connection and a mobile phone signal. We don’t need input from someone living in Conondale who does not know of the problems of a local deteriorating telephone exchange system and minimal mobile phone coverage across the Glass House Mountains. As for the tower being in the wrong spot, you could not be more wrong. The position of the NBN tower in Glass House Mountains is hardly in a scenic position and if scenic sites were such an issue, how come we have a quarry and a processing plant that produces bark chips and other less savoury products? In addition, the main electrical power corridor passing within metres of the location makes your argument not only laughable but ill-informed regarding Glass House Mountains. There are no trees on the site of the tower in Glass House, so that argument does not apply. I know a little about the internet as I have been a web designer since 1996, and I can tell you very few locals are happy about the quality of communications, including the mobile service and the fact that we are a third world state when it comes to internet technology. The tyranny of distance has always been Australia’s biggest hurdle. If I want to use my mobile phone in Glass House I have to find a signal friendly zone. If I am phoning my friend down the road he has to find a sweet spot to take the call. When the power goes down (as it does), I just hope I don’t have to call the emergency services on my mobile. I was very happy to hear about the recent court decision to allow NBN Co to move ahead with fixed wireless tower placement in a number of towns in the Hinterland region without ridiculous and arbitrary restrictions. As a resident of North Maleny, an area with astoundingly poor internet infrastructure, it is wonderful to see the precedent being set. To put it bluntly, the internet speed and availability in this area is worse than what some second and third world nations consider the

It has me bewildered that there are people who are still against NBN tower placement, especially those with concerns about EMR (electromagnetic radiation). The average mobile phone user in a regular phone call is exposed to higher levels of EMR than someone living near an NBN tower. The EMR levels associated with phone calls are many magnitudes smaller than what is considered dangerous levels, let alone NBN tower levels. You only need consult the ARPANSA (Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency) to find out this information. Re: Skippy Park/vegetation damage
The structure referred to in a letter to GC&M News on June 7 was the cubby house in the photograph. It was made by four children aged between 2 and 9 years and myself, and was only made of woody debris, woody vine and clinging dead leaves. We spent quite some time building it and, thanks to this rich experience, the children have enjoyed food packed into the picnic basket, have reinforced nature awareness, and they have enjoyed teamwork and bushcraft skills, combined with storytelling. Spending some quality time with the children in an environment other than home was magical. Imagine their faces when they discovered their 'artwork' entirely wrecked. What kind of message are we sending our children with this type of behaviour? That we should encourage them to spend more time on screens than in nature? In regard to the reference to “damage to our local species", I think it is safe to say that our little cubby house contributed nothing to this problem. There is absolutely no activity that you can undertake in the bush which has no environmental impact – this includes bushwalking, camping, dog walking, biking, etc. As a nature lover myself and also a good ‘sportsperson’, I would gladly welcome a meeting with you any time so I could show you how much I enjoy our wonderful bush and environment and do care about it. The Beerwah railway overpass
I'm getting very tired of people constantly denigrating the Beerwah railway overpass. Those who do so have very short memories or have moved here recently or don't live where I do. Does no-one recall the queues that stretched back past the old entrance to Beerwah Marketplace when the level crossing was closed, or how long it took to get to the station or businesses in Beerwah Parade even after the boom gates had opened? I certainly appreciate being able to get to such places in a foreseeable time (once I get past the crossroads at the Beerwah State School!) even if that time is a couple of minutes more than it would have been via the level crossing when it was open. Has anyone asked the emergency services how they feel about having reliable access to the western part of Beerwah? Note also that the new road and bridge were constructed without the demolition of a single house or place of business (only the skate park had to be moved) whereas the proposed overpass at Landsborough looks as though it will tear the heart out of the town. There have been several letters to the editor recently regarding the need for safety improvements at the intersection of Kilcoy-Beerwah Road and Old Gympie Road, Beerwah. My office has also been contacted by concerned road users enquiring into how to put together a petition to get things moving. Unfortunately, between Mark McArdle and myself, we have petitioned the Minister for Main Roads several times regarding this intersection and their response is always the same: “that investigation determined the intersection is currently a low priority for an upgrade” and “accordingly, TMR is not progressing with planning for an upgrade”. The most recent response to the petition I sponsored at the end of last year acknowledged that some improvements had been undertaken by the developer, but let me make this clear – the improvements were paid for by the developer and not by funds contributed by the government and we all know these improvements have done nothing to address the big picture or to make the intersection safer. Cheryle Campbell (GC&M News, May 31) is right in accusing the government of doing nothing until a fatality happens. The minister has not offered any kind of financial contribution or investigation into real, workable safety upgrades. I can assure you that as your state member and also in my capacity as Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads, I will continue to raise this issue with the minister and do everything in my power to fight for adequate improvements to avoid a serious incident occurring at this intersection. If given the opportunity to be returned to government I look forward to addressing this intersection and other necessary upgrades required in our region. Big wins for the Sunshine Coast in Federal Budget
The recent Federal Budget contains big wins for the Sunshine Coast and in particular for our community in the Hinterland. Since my election almost a year ago I have worked hard to get the results that local people need and deserve. I have given more than 75 speeches in Parliament, worn a path in the carpet between my office and our federal ministers, and invited them to our community 16 times. Across thousands of survey responses and conversations I have had with constituents, you told me that the most important federal issue here is congestion on the Bruce Highway and that has been my first priority. That’s why I am so pleased that the Budget contains another $650m for Sunshine Coast Bruce Highway upgrades. This is on top of the $929.3m project we announced last year. The additional money will go to upgrades between Pine Rivers and Caloundra to give us, as a minimum, six lanes all the way to Brisbane. This will transform travel times to and from Brisbane and make a big difference for our vital Hinterland tourism industry. The Budget also includes a $10 billion National Rail Program. Now that we have delivered on funding upgrades to the Highway, my next number one priority is to work with the Queensland Government to secure some of this money to duplicate the rail line between Beerburrum and Nambour. The Budget contains $266m extra funding for local schools. This includes, for example, an extra $26m for Glasshouse Christian College, $9m more for Beerwah State High School and $6m for Maleny State High School. Every school in our community will see an increase in funding. Last month I wrote about my campaign to get federal funding for dementia and mental health on the Coast through supporting the Thompson Institute. Our campaign was a success! $5m has been committed to the Institute in the Federal Budget to get three new programs up and running to help with dementia, youth mental health and suicide prevention. Thank you to everyone who wrote to me in support of this campaign.
$25,000 for Hinterland volunteer groups
I was delighted last month to announce Federal Volunteer Grants for seven community organisations in Maleny and Landsborough. These included Landsborough Primary P&C Association, who received $3,200 for training of their volunteers and Maleny District and Sport and Recreation Club which received $5,000 for landscaping and gardening. Other local groups receiving grants of up to $5,000 were Guides Queensland in Maleny, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Association, Landsborough Area Community Association, Maleny and District Men’s Shed and the St Vincent de Paul Society. Volunteers rarely ask for anything, they just get on with the job. It is great to see the government making it just a little easier for them to do just that.

Sleeping rough for Coast’s homeless
With homelessness affecting more than 1,500 men, women and children on the Sunshine Coast, I will be joining a group of local dignitaries, business people and community members to sleep rough in the name of charity by participating in the St Vincent de Paul Corporate and Community Sleepout 2017. The Sleepout will take place on Thursday June 29 outside the Maroochydore Surf Club. Participants will be provided with a piece of cardboard to sleep on or build a shelter with, and a basic meal of soup, bread rolls, tea and coffee. It’s easy to take for granted just how lucky many of us are to have a roof over our heads and food on the table each day, and this event really does open your eyes to the tough conditions our region’s homeless face night after night. In the eight months to March 1, 2017, the St Vincent de Paul Northern Diocese has provided support to 400 homeless individuals including 250 children, which shows the ongoing need for these services is enormous. One of the major misconceptions around homelessness is that it is predominantly a choice. In many cases, homelessness comes about through factors out of a person’s control – whether this is mental or physical illness, financial instability, lack of education, domestic violence or something else entirely. Families face higher car rego
The Labor Government and Queensland cross benchers combined during the last sitting week of Parliament to ensure Queensland families are slugged with their third 3.5% increase on family car registration. Under Labor, Queenslanders always end up paying more to cover for the government’s fiscal incompetence and it proves they just don’t care about Queensland families. For the third year running, Labor has slugged Queensland families with a car rego increase more than twice the inflation rate. Mums and dads across Queensland are hurting with the bills piling up and this latest cash grab will do nothing to relieve their stress. Unfortunately Labor has form by raising car rego and treating Queensland families as cash cows. The LNP froze car rego costs for the three years we were in government and we’ve committed that any future rises are kept in line with CPI – not double the inflation rate like we’ve seen under Labor. A positive partnership for healthy ageing The Sunshine Coast has one of the highest populations of residents aged 65 years and older in Queensland. By 2031, it is expected that nearly a quarter of the Queensland’s population will be 65 years or older (Queensland Treasury statistics). So it makes sense that seniors within our region have access to the best possible resources they require to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. A new website with information about positive ageing resources and upcoming events is now online thanks to collaboration between Sunshine Coast Council, The University of the Sunshine Coast, the Primary Health Network (PHN) and local service providers. Community and Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the Healthy Ageing Partnership - Sunshine Coast website had been created through a coordinated approach by government, organisations and the community to support healthy ageing in our region. “This website provides an ideal platform for individuals, groups and organisations in our region to access positive ageing resources, information and upcoming events and activities for our ageing community to be involved in,” Cr McKay said. “The Healthy Ageing Partnership website includes a directory of service providers with information and links to local aged care support, residential aged care facilities and volunteer services. It also contains a calendar of events and a members’ hub.

It’s never too early to find out about what aged care services are available before you need them. This way you will be prepared to make decisions about your future when the time comes. A variety of aged care services and support options are available to assist older people live independently as long as possible and enjoy life in their communities to the fullest. To help seniors, their families and carers navigate through the process, the Australian Government’s My Aged Care website and a national 1800 phone line have been designed to give people more choice, more control and easier access to a full range of aged care services. The Federal Minister for Aged Care, Ken Wyatt, is encouraging people to seek out the aged care options for themselves and their loved ones. “Making inquiries about aged care, before it is needed urgently, makes a lot of sense,” said Mr Wyatt. “It is very stressful when people are faced with a health crisis or an accident happens and they may suddenly find that they need help. “They’re trying to find out what their aged care options are, in a hurry, but they don’t know where to start. “The best place to start is the My Aged Care website and phone line, a one stop shop which provides information about services available in the local area, how to access them, costs and other information.” Examples of aged care support that people, depending on their care needs, may be eligible to receive, include home maintenance and modifications, help with household jobs like cleaning, assistance with transport, and nursing and personal care. “The Australian Government wants all older Australians, their families and carers, to know about their aged care options,” Mr Wyatt said. “If you are finding it harder to do the things you used to do and feel you need a bit of support at home, find the help you need with My Aged Care.” Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said, “Applying for any service like aged care can take some time, so it is worth finding out what you need to know early. “I am working hard right now with the government to help some seniors on the Sunshine Coast to get the support they need more quickly, so I have already seen how important it is to get help as soon as possible and to apply early. More and more people are turning to the ancient Chinese art of Tai Chi for exercise. With issues around housing affordability hitting the headlines on a regular basis, a growing trend both here and internationally is the search for community driven solutions that address housing affordability. Older people can be particularly vulnerable when facing the challenges of finding and securing safe, affordable and appropriate housing. Following on from a groundswell of interest exploring shared or co- housing models, a Queensland woman, Linda Mina, has established a number of online seniors forums to allow older people to connect and further explore housing options. “Public housing in Australia is currently not coping with demand,” Linda said. “As a result, people on low incomes and pensions (who are eligible and on waiting lists for public housing) must compete in the private rental market. This in turn, has created greater demand for affordable, low priced housing which is now scarce and it’s a highly competitive process to
actually secure a lease.” With the increase in rental demand effectively pushing up rental prices over recent years, Linda who has a background in Human Services and an interest in seniors’ advocacy was keen to create opportunities to help people address this issue. Linda set about creating and launching ‘Seniors Shared Houses Gold Coast’ to help people explore options to share housing costs. This forum has now been followed by a number of other location based sites. Early this year the ‘Seniors Share Houses Sunshine Coast’ Facebook page was established and it currently has over 330 members “The majority of people joining my groups who are currently, or about to become, homeless are senior aged women who now represent one in four of homeless people in Australia,” said Linda. Take aim at come and try day The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games is coming next year, and Australia has traditionally been highly successful in the sports of clay target and pistol shooting. As part of the excitement – and hopefully the gold medal tally – the Caboolture Clay Target Club with the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia, Caboolture Branch, have come together to hold a ‘Come and Try Day’ at the Uhlmann Road, Burpengary East sporting shooting complex this Sunday, June 18. Recent new club Shooting is a self-challenging sport requiring mem bers, sisters Maya skill, a high level of self-discipline and (13 ) and Kyrah (15) concentration. Buchmaier The come and try day will allow fully qualified and trained club members to explain and demonstrate the correct and safe use of firearms in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. In a 100% safe environment, anyone over the age of 11 years (minors must be accompanied by an adult) will be able to try shooting at a moving clay target, or try to hit a bullseye with a pistol for only $10. All shotguns, pistols, ammunition and safety equipment are provided as part of the $10 fee. You don’t need to have a gun licence to shoot on the day, but you will need to have identification, wear covered shoes (no thongs or sandals), a comfortable sleeved shirt and prescription glasses if you need them. You also must not be a ‘prohibited person’. No bookings are required. Just turn up between 9am and 4pm this Sunday, June 18, at the 558 Uhlmann Road, Burpengary East shooting complex and register. You can try various different shotguns and pistols, trying different events and disciplines. Have as many goes as you wish at just $10 a session (5 shots) and discounted multi-shot tickets are available. A sausage sizzle, hot food and drinks will be available, so why not make a day of it? Sport shooting is the safest sport in Australia, and the clubs at the Uhlmann Road complex are proud to be very family friendly and safety conscious. Music Early bird tickets on sale now for Maleny Music Festival The Maleny Music Festival (MMF) returns for its sixth year to the Maleny Showgrounds with a three day event from Friday September 1 through to Sunday September 3. Billed as an intimate family friendly festival, this year will feature over 80 local, interstate and international performers as well as a jam packed program of street entertainment, comedy, concerts and workshops alongside licensed bars and food and market stalls. Veggie Notes Tomato – the taller ones
As we live in a subtropical climate, we can grow tomatoes all year round, so I have a continual planting regime almost all year round. Tomatoes are either determinate (the bushy lower growing bushy varieties) or indeterminate (the taller growing ones). Here I’ll talk about growing the larger fruiting taller determinate tomatoes. These varieties include Apollo, Beefsteak, Green Zebra, Grosse Lisse, Mortgage Lifter, Oxheart and Rouge de Marmande. They’re all great for cooking, eating or freezing. Whatever variety you want to grow the planting is the same. Prepare the bed well with compost, old manures, pelletised chook poo, blood and bone, a handful of dolomite (to sweeten the soil and provide calcium), some sulphate of potash and a sprinkling of trace elements. I don’t plant my seedlings straight away after buying them. I pot them into a slightly larger pot – say a small yoghurt container – and let them stay in that for three to four weeks. This gets them hardened off and stresses them in the early stage of their life. By doing this, they will flower better when you plant them into your garden. I tend to wait until the first flowers appear before planting out and then when I do plant them, I plant them deeply – just above the first set of leaves. Tomatoes will grow roots from their stems, so you end up with a strong plant. Plant them 50-60cm apart to give the roots good soil space and stake them straight away. Use at least two stakes and make them the tallest you can find. Mulch well and water in with a seaweed solution. I’m a big fan of side stem pruning for indeterminate tomatoes. Use a sharp knife or snips to cut out the shoots that grow from where the leaf joins the stem. But leave the first major growth shoot as it will form a second leader for you. It’s easy to tell as it will be much thicker and more vigorous than the others – but only leave this one. The other shoots will just take energy away from the main plant. Tie the main leader to one of the stakes as it grows upwards, and the second leader to another stake. Keep them trained up separate stakes. As they grow higher (and higher), I find it easiest to attach another stake (or bamboo pole) to the existing stake using cable ties to extend its height. Keep shoot pruning any side shoots to maintain just the two leaders. Tomatoes feed voraciously and so will need to be supplementary fertilised every two weeks. As the flowers develop and set fruit, you’ll have to watch for caterpillars, fruit fly and pesky parrots. To protect them, once the fruit have grown to about a golf ball size, I take a large paper sandwich bag, carefully put that over the fruit and using a peg, fasten the top around the stem of the tomato truss. The bag will hold up to repeated wetting and drying and won’t fall apart (you’ll even find out you can reuse them for two seasons). Even watering is vital –the plant (and fruiting) will suffer from diseases and other problems with uneven watering. You’ll be able to see the reddening fruits through the bag as they ripen. I pick mine before they fully ripen and let them ripen inside... don’t keep them in the fridge until they are fully ripe. Once they’re finished, don’t replant tomatoes into the same place for another 18 months, as this just encourages soil nematodes to build up.

A great time was had by all and Jan won the quoits contest. Our next get together is our birthday party on June 21 when we will meet at Glass House Sports Club at 11am for fun, entertainment, raffles and a buffet lunch. Our theme this year is music from the movies and all are encouraged to dress up. Our club raises funds for The Smith Family and The Learning for Life program at all its functions. Foundations Jesus said, “Anyone who hears these words of mine and obeys them is like a wise man who built his house on rock.” (Matthew 7:24) The person who lives by the teaching of Jesus is building their faith on a solid foundation. Such a person will stand firm during difficulties and trials and will withstand the storms of life. Jesus said, “Anyone who hears these words of mine and does not obey them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.” (Matthew 7:26) The nominal Christian may know all the teachings of Jesus but unless faith is put into practice there will be no strong foundations to withstand the temptations of life. All of us are builders. We are building the house of our lives around us, and builders are responsible people. Some houses fit into the landscape and are an addition to the scenery, and some mar the countryside. Lives may bring comfort and charm, or distress and trouble. The houses of our lives are meant to be different. There is nothing so dull as seeing a great number

of houses exactly alike. We have to build our particular houses according to our temperaments and the gifts God has given us. God grant that we may not be building ugly structures that may offend the divine eye or chill the pilgrim soul that passes. The people of Mooloolah Valley in the year 1927, during difficult times of the World War I, needed a church building where they could gather together and offer their prayers to God. They organised a workforce and raised money by various community activities and built a small wooden church. They named the church St Thomas Church of England (now called St Thomas Anglican Church). On Saturday May 20 we celebrated its 90th Anniversary with the Archbishop of Brisbane, Revd Dr Philip Aspinall, celebrating a Sung Eucharist after enjoying a family afternoon tea in the local hall where historical records were on display for all to see. We give thanks to God for the aspirations of those dedicated people in the Mooloolah Valley ninety years ago, who built a house on the rock of faith as a foundation for future generations. Sport Beerwah Bridge Club
Contributed by Martine Goedhart Friday, June 9: What an enjoyable afternoon we all had. Organised by Tom Major we played a 10 table team’s match, which was something different from our usual play. The winning teams were: 1st Tom Major, Jillian Major, Ross Schultz and Rita Johnson. Second place went to Freda Winteringham, Felicity Crawford, Trish Watts and Rosalie Stevens, and third went to Judith Boyd, Ann Slade, Harry Hankinson and Ro Promnitz. Mooloolah Sports Day
Contributed by Michelle Lenz What a wonderful day for an athletics carnival! The sun was shining and the crowds were ready to cheer on their favourite sports houses. Students from Prep to Year 6 participated in running events and games to gain points for their sport house. Students, parents and family members wore colours of red, blue and green to support their teams. All students displayed such wonderful sportsmanship. This was evident in their encouragement, clapping, colours, cheering and war cries. Proud parents watched their children try hard in many events. Whether the students came first, second or last, they put in 100% effort for all their events. There were some truly talented athletes, with many winning multiple ribbons, breaking records or beating their personal best times, distances or heights. All the students and teams put in a fantastic effort and at the end of the day there could only be one winner. The winning house was Rungert followed closely by Westaway and then Maddock. Many of our winners will go on to represent the school at the district athletics carnival held in July. Well done to all students, Mooloolah State School community is very proud of you and your efforts. Age champions were: 8-year-old, Stephanie Stewart and Eli Hackney; 9-year-old Bonnie Muller and Jacob Day;10-year-old Ella Ward and Riley Hackney; 11-year-old Tahlia Parry and Beau Gray Christison; 12-year-old Tamsyn Douglas and Zane Hawkins. Saturday, June 10: There was a Four Ball Stableford Competition held over 18 holes with first place going to Scott Alexander and Michael Burgis with 48 points, Runners-up were Malcolm Ewing and Mike Finley with 46 points and third place went to Bill Reynolds and Richard Owen with 45 points. For the purpose of submitting scores to One Golf Qld, the top three individual scores were Mike Finley with 42 points, Bill Reynolds with 41 points and Garth Bailo with 38 points on a count-back from Marcus Wellington, also with 38 points. Lots of long games with many deuces. It was a great tennis, as it should be for a semi-final. It was close but we were a bit short. Score was 32-39 games, 4 sets all. The Beerburrum State School annual Athletics Carnival was held recently with all students participating with determination and sportsmanship. Norfolk ran out the winners, narrowly beating Flinders by two points, closely followed by Bongaree. Congratulations to our Age Champions: 9 year olds, Abby and Braith; 10 year olds, Emma and Isaak; 11 years olds, Jayde and Jackson; and 12 year olds, Jasmine and Reilly. Some long standing records were also broken: Abby – 9 year olds high jump and 9 year olds long jump, and Graice – 11 year olds shot put. Glasshouse Bowls Club
Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday evening at Club Glasshouse over 60 members and friends turned up for a farewell dinner to say goodbye to one of our much loved members in John McSwain who, after 20 years, is leaving our club to move back to Victoria. In his time here John has held many positions on both the bowls club board and also Club Glasshouse. He has worked tirelessly on many projects around our club with the last project being the extension to the back patio. John has done so much for our club, but not only that, he is one of the best blokes you will ever meet. Hopefully we get to see you again sometime in the future. Thanks for all your contributions to our club throughout the years. In John’s absence, Ron Rix will be filling the role as Club President until the September AGM. On Sunday June 18 the semi-finals and final will be held at our club starting at 9am. All welcome to come down and watch. There will be no coaching on this day due to District Bowls. Contributed by Neil Lovett The Maleny Show is over for another year, and with it the Maleny Show Society’s hardest work, although maintenance and improvements have to continue. As our lawns are in the Maleny Showgrounds we enjoy the support of the Society throughout the year, and greatly appreciate help and advice from Ivan Hankinson, Colin Sinclair and Lois White. On Tuesday the Blackall Care Group made its monthly visit, with two games of golf croquet. We hosted another Lochwood Shield match on Wednesday against Coolum, losing 1-2. Scores were (Range players first) Ken Barker 22 Patricia Smith 14, Donna Manning 11 Wade Hart 26 and in doubles Vince Carbery and Ken 10 to Patricia and Wade 20. In club games on Sunday Kath Smith 8 beat Sarah Widin and Sally Adams 7 and Ken 13 downed Vince 9. On Thursday Jan Barnes from the St Leonards Croquet Club in Tasmania had a 22-12 victory over Kath, and in a handicap game Frances Harper beat Vince 9-7.
