Well, it is that time of year again – School Holiday time, the time of year when parents and grandparents fear those dreaded words, ‘I’m bored!’ So in this edition we have included our regular ‘Boredom Busters’ feature which includes plenty of things that are going on locally during the school holidays. As usual the libraries at both Beerwah and Maleny have lots of activities, and many of them are free, and then for the kids that love nature there are some interesting activities at the Rainforest Discovery Centre and at the Maroochy Botanic Gardens. For the first time, All in One Fitness at Beerwah is promoting their Kids Boot Camps with us, for the kids in two age groups (5 to 8 years and 9 to 12 years). And for the horse lovers, there’s lots going on at the Glass House Mountains Riding School. We even have some free tickets to win for family tours of Maleny Dairies! There are also plenty of events happening including Mooloolah’s Moofest, the Kenilworth Show and Rodeo, a movie night at Glass House Mountains Sports Club and a Drive In Night at the Maleny Showgrounds. Local News Plastic bags out, refund system in Legislation was passed by State Parliament last week establishing a container refund scheme and banning plastic shopping bags. As of mid next year, Queenslanders will be able to cash in drink cans and bottles, but won’t be able to get plastic shopping bags at supermarkets. Environment Minister Steven Miles said the Waste Reduction and Recycling Amendment Bill 2017 passed through Parliament with bipartisan support. “This reflects the overwhelming community support for both the refund scheme and the plastic bag ban which will both come into effect on July 1, 2018,” Mr Miles said. “I applauded the initiative of retailers who were proactively banning the supply of lightweight plastic shopping bags in advance of the ban commencing. “The State Government will continue to work closely with beverage manufacturers, retailers, local government, the waste and resource recovery industry, and the community on both proposals to ensure a smooth transition and operation of the container refund scheme and plastic bag ban.” The container refund scheme will see most drink containers between 150ml and 3 litres eligible for a 10 cent refund (although some containers are exempt, such as containers for plain milk, wine and pure juice). Refunds will be available when empty eligible containers are returned to designated container refund points across the state. Reverse vending machines are likely to play a significant role in
people’s ability to access the refund. CEO of the Waste Recycling Industry Association (Qld), Rick Ralph, said the association strongly supported the introduction of the scheme. “The introduction of this scheme gives every Queenslander access to a recycling system for used containers,” Mr Ralph said. “It will make such a tremendous difference to the environment. “Some 16 million of these bags end up as litter each year, greatly harming our marine wildlife such as turtles and sea birds that ingest or become tangled in them. “The next time we think about throwing away our drink containers we can think again, knowing there’s a better way, and now we’re paid to do it!” Similar container refund schemes have been operating in South Australia and the Northern Territory for many years, with New South Wales to bring in a refund scheme in December this year. Similarly, bans on lightweight single-use plastic shopping bags are already in place in other parts of the country including South Australia, the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania. Local forest group wins award The Save the Steve Irwin Forest Group has taken out the Healthy Land and Water ‘Community Environmental Stewardship Award’. The prestigious accolade is in recognition of their tireless efforts to protect sections of critically endangered habitat and subtropical lowland rainforest found in the Mooloolah section of the Beerwah State Forest. A spokesperson from the group said that they were overjoyed with the announcement last week. “This win would not have been possible without the contribution of many individuals and groups along the way who felt a calling to speak up in defence of nature under threat by overdevelopment here on the Sunshine Coast,” the spokesperson said. “In gratitude to all involved, we would like to acknowledge the teamwork and consistent efforts over the last five years of the campaign. “This group and supporters were successful in helping to transition 744 hectares of State Forest to National Park status. “We wish to thank Narelle McCarthy from Sunshine Coast Environment Council for her determined work behind the scenes in helping to secure the National Park gazettal as well as all others who involved themselves with the petitions, writing letters to the ministers, organising events, rallies and meetings to bring attention to this issue. “We were fortunate also to have had many

At the launch of the Vintage Calendar Girls 2018 held at Maleny Manor, founder Misty Bland announced this year’s fundraising beneficiary as Shakira Frisby. Shakira was the 2018 cover girl who posed alongside former Dancing with the Stars judge Todd McKenney and Renovating for Profit founder and regular on The Living Room Cherie Barber earlier this year at the Manor. Shakira’s life changed forever when she was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of 18. The outgoing, fun-loving Battery Hill woman, now 22, is still working through the limitations the tumour has put on her life. The disruptions to her brain mean Shakira easily forgets things and tires easily. Changed traffic conditions on Steve Irwin Way The Department of Transport and Main Roads would like to provide an update on the rehabilitation of 2.3km of Steve Irwin Way, between Mellum Creek and Ewen Maddock Dam, at Landsborough. This project will commence in mid-September. Works will take approximately eight weeks to complete, weather permitting and involve removal of the existing road surface, resurfacing of the road and line marking. The works will be undertaken at night, between 7pm and 5am, Sunday to Thursday, to avoid
high traffic volumes during the day. Residents and businesses will be advised of the potential impacts, including noise, dust, vibration and intermittent access restrictions. Motorists may experience delays during these works with lane closures, traffic controllers, and reduced speed limits. Road signage will be in place to ensure the safety of motorists and road workers. Variable Message Signs will also be deployed before the work starts. Priority access and entry through the work zone will be given to emergency vehicles.

Excessive card surcharging was banned for all businesses from Friday September 1, which follows on from the ban placed on large businesses from September 1, 2016. Smaller businesses were granted extra time to prepare for the ban, now all businesses will need to cease any excessive surcharging. If they continue to impose a charge for card payments, they must restrict it to their reasonable cost of acceptance of the payment. Businesses have been on notice for more than a year to review their surcharging practices and make sure they understand and comply with their obligations. “This action will ensure the people of Fisher are not ripped off when they make purchases with their cards and will give our community the confidence that card surcharges reflect the true cost of the transaction, not an artificially inflated sum designed to profit gouge,” Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace said. Consumer watchdog the ACCC will act as a strong cop on the beat to police these rules. If people find that they are being hit with an excessive surcharge when they go to the shops, buy tickets online or book a holiday, they should not hesitate to contact them on 1300 302 502. The first month of the new presidency has been very busy indeed. We have had the first meeting, organised by Sunshine Coast Council, of the Glasshouse Mountains Heritage Tracks or Trails (depends who you are talking to!) with all the relevant parties, e.g. National Parks, Plantation HQ, GMAV, Walking Groups, Running Groups, and the Chamber as representative of the local business community. Everybody seems to be on the same page and it will be interesting and exciting to see what can be achieved in the short term as well as in the longer term. Everybody will profit from increased eco tourism activities, and we have a lot to offer. Unfortunately, what is lacking is tourist accommodation. If tourists come, we need to provide suitable overnight stays; otherwise they will stay the day and then go and spend their money in Mooloolaba, Caloundra or Noosa. We have a very unique chance to really speed up the process. All relevant entities are interested in the Hinterland and they are able and willing to promote ‘soft tourism’. We just need to be united in what we want. Further, the Chamber has been asked to issue letters of support for a couple of businesses experiencing problems with authorities. The Chamber is more than happy to offer our support to businesses, especially our members. If you have issues, please let us know. The initial phase will also include a 6,000 square metre retail and restaurant precinct. Phase two of ACTVENTURE, will consist of a four-star, 220-room family hotel, with conferencing services, and Phase 3, an action sports precinct with world-class BMX and skateboarding facilities, plus a huge indoor sports training center with parkour, gymnastics and more. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the approval represented a major milestone for the project and would help with job creation on the Sunshine Coast. “Once completed, this waterpark will attract new visitors to the region, visitors who would most likely extend their length of stay and generate a substantial economic boost,” Mayor Jamieson said. “New tourist attractions generate new business, which in turn offers more enduring employment opportunities for our residents and helps to deliver new facilities and services to meet the needs of our communities.” A development application for phase two and three of the project is anticipated to be lodged with council by late 2017.

Last week, Sunshine Coast Council finally approved the first stage of the water theme park on Steve Irwin Way at Glenview. The company behind the $450 million project, Sanad Capital, describe the development as an ‘active lifestyle destination’, and locals are eagerly anticipating to see just what that entails. According to Sanad CEO Bradley Sutherland, preparations to commence earthworks for Stage 1 began immediately the approval was given. “Sanad immediately commenced preparations to engage local contractors to begin moving earth as soon as possible,” he said. “Tenders went out last week to six civil contractors based on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane, who will submit their bids to complete the bulk earthworks for the entire site.” The bulk earthworks will entail around 150,000 cubic metres of cut and fill, including a new lagoon area and the beautification of the existing waterways, and immediate preparations for Stage 1 of construction, and all future stages. The four-phase, 24-hectare project will include in its first phase a state of the art water park, and a great lawn for major events, concerts, and community activities. The world’s first ACTVENTURE Tower will provide thrill seekers with adrenaline pumping activities such as bungee jumping, freefalling, human slingshot, ziplines and more. The outdoor adventure park will offer activities

in profile Steve Parish ‘Bringing creativity into your life’ By Sonia Clark For many people, celebrated photographer, educator, author and publisher Steve Parish needs no introduction. Best known for capturing the essence of Australian wildlife and landscapes through his vivid photography, Steve is a passionate advocate of our natural environment. Steve and his wife made the Hinterland their home in 2015 and have enjoyed a great sense of connectedness and love for the region. Having lived all over Australia, Steve is blown away by the beauty of the area and the warmth and connectedness of the people. He is also incredibly impressed with the resources of our local libraries. “I’m astounded by the quality of the social interaction here, especially in our greater Glasshouse region. The people are amazing and facilities such as the libraries deliver such care and commitment with their outstanding resources and diversity of programs and speakers. As someone who works 24/7, the social intercourse and connection to others that the libraries offer is fabulous.” Steve’s photographs, publications and workshops have inspired and connected countless people over the years and his work celebrates the magnificent beauty of the Australian landscape and the uniqueness of its flora and fauna. Dramatic changes to his publishing business and associated operational commitments in 20112012 meant that Steve was forced to move away from his well-known publishing company. In some ways this change provided the catalyst for him to formalise his desire to inspire others to pursue a creative life. “Following the bankruptcy of my publishing company, a phrase from Eckhart Tolle really stuck with me – ‘you can lose something you have but you cannot lose something you are’, and so this pushed me to establishing Steve Parish Nature Connect. “I realise how a connection with nature and having a creative passion can transform lives and so, since 2015, I have really ramped up through the broader media the importance of having a life purpose and how a lack of life purpose can contribute to many of society’s ills,” explained Steve. Since then Steve has concentrated his passions towards helping inspire others to achieve their life purpose through opening themselves to the power of creativity and nature. Encouraging people to explore the notion of ‘living a creative life’ has been a concept he has inadvertently promoted throughout his 50 year photography career, however realising how powerful having a ‘big picture project can be’, Steve has sought to further connect people with this idea through events, workshops and seminars. Steve believes that creative life adventures enhance spiritual, physical and psychological wellbeing and that nature connection has deeply

beneficial benefits for mental wellness. Over the coming months he has developed a series of free talks to be delivered at the Sunshine Coast Libraries as well as paid workshops at the Rainforest Discovery Centre at Mary Cairncross Reserve. His seminars explore practical ways to develop creative life objectives, inspire creativity and develop passion focussed projects. “I want to help people bring creativity into their lives and encourage people to move towards their passions and creative potential by embracing a project that allows them to grow and learn. For me photography and joy are intertwined. Any activity that can bring joy and play into our lives is wonderful.” Steve is still deeply passionate about his photography and is currently ‘chasing wildflowers’ in Western Australia with his new drone. At 72 he is still enchanted by the beauty of the world around him and no doubt some of his infectious enthusiasm for nature, creativity and life will be shared during his upcoming seminars. Mind your parking manners in Maleny
For a number of weeks Sunshine Coast Council parking inspectors have been visibly active in Maleny, in a bid to educate people on the two hour parking limits. Their presence hasn’t gone unnoticed and has become a hot topic of discussion on social media. For the time being, the parking inspectors are merely warning those found flaunting the two hour time limit – and for other parking infringements – rather than hitting them with on-the-spot fines. However, once new signage is erected, all that will change. According to Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay, it’s all about maximising parking opportunities. "Council is proactively working in the Hinterland to ensure the regulated parking zones are being respected,” she said. “These areas will be heavily regulated to ensure that we maximise parking opportunities for all.” New regulated parking signs have been drafted which include both weekend days. According to the Council’s draft parking management plan, Maleny will continue to experience growth in the demand for parking, particularly on Maple Street. The draft plan features increased parking provided in surrounding streets, as well as better signage and pathways to the main street. Paid parking is specifically excluded from the proposals. Maleny Chamber of Commerce ran a campaign in 2016 to encourage businesses in town to not utilise the prime commercial parking spaces for themselves or their staff. The President of Maleny Commerce, Spencer Shaw, said, “This is a difficult issue, as we see ever increasing numbers in both residents and tourists (and their associated use of public parking in the Maleny township), but little or no investment in public parking. “It would be great if we didn’t require enforcement of the parking regulations, but to maintain access to public parking for ever growing community demand, this is an unfortunate reality,” he said. However, public opinion seems divided on the merits – or otherwise – of the recent parking inspector activity. Many are aghast, calling it revenue raising and tourism destroying. But just as many are supportive, saying it was about time and that the two hour rules have been in place for many years.

‘Amazing Space’ launch If you’re after a school that is out of this world in space, teaching, learning and student results, you can’t go past the Caboolture Montessori School (CMS). The recent (Friday August 25) launch of a magnificent architect-designed, two storey building comprising four classrooms and multiple purpose spaces, signalled a celebration of unprecedented but planned growth in both student numbers and buildings. Nearly 20 years old, the established, enchanting, semi-rural, green campus is located at 200 Old Gympie Road, north of Caboolture. School Principal, Yvonne Rinaldi, said the new building is an additional source of pride for the school community. “The building was conceived through intensive consultation with all members of the School community and Towill Design Group’s principal Architect, Rachel Towill, who engaged directly with the students,” Principal Rinaldi stated. “Since the ‘breaking of the soil’ ceremony on

Montessori is taught world-wide and has been in Australia for over 100 years. CMS offers a nationally recognised curriculum,

The whole of school building launch event incorporated the Gubbi Gubbi Dance troupe, an address by Queensland Senator and Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister, James McGrath, Architect Rachel Towill, Board Chair Nick Willemsen along with other dignitaries in attendance and an apology from Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, who has always been a terrific supporter to the school. A VIP building tour, plaque unveiling, ribbon cutting and whole of school performance of the school song concluded the ceremony, following which the children enjoyed celebratory cake. Grand Opening and print production facilities tour of Beerwah Print Having recently completed the finishing touches to their brand new showroom and design studio, the team at Beerwah Print are getting excited about planning for their ‘grand opening’ event on Saturday September 23. The morning festivities kick off from 9am until 12noon and will be a chance for the local business to highlight the other local businesses that have helped produce the exciting new space, as well as a great opportunity to celebrate! The event will feature a free sausage sizzle, free ‘goodie bag’ giveaways and a prize draw on the day offering a free set of designed and printed business cards. Customers are invited to come along on the day and design a picture on a template which will be transferred to their onsite design package, loaded into a print file, printed and then placed through their letterpress machine for presentation and pickup at a special print production facilities tour which will coincide with the Celebrate Glasshouse Country Street Party Beerwah on Friday October 20. At this stage two production facilities tours will run during the street party event at 5pm and again at 7pm. The tours will be conducted at the onsite production workshop located just behind the showroom and design studio on Turner Street. They have been designed to give interested people an opportunity to find out more about the fascinating history of printing and to also see firsthand what digital, offset and letterpress printing machines look like. The tour will also highlight the modern aspects of design and printing, and for customers who attended the ‘grand opening’, they will have the opportunity to collect their finished designed picture keepsake.

Prepare, Act and Survive this bushfire season A number of fires have happened locally in the past weeks and, with very little rain forecast, it is a clear indication that we are in for a severe fire season. Here are some of the things that the Rural Fire Service wishes to encourage residents to do to ensure they are ready for this bushfire season. Prepare Your Bushfire Survival Plan (BSP) To get started on this task log on to www. ruralfire.qld.gov.au to find out how it is done, some of the issues you need to consider: Does everyone in your family understand the dangers of bushfire and how your plan will be put into action? Have you arranged appropriate car and household insurance? Do you know what you will take with you if you need to leave early? Have you considered how to deal with pets and livestock? Your property Clear space around your home and property. Remove any fire hazards from around your home including undergrowth, raking up leaves, twigs and low branches. Have enough water and firefighting equipment, access cleared for fire trucks / emergency vehicles. Yourself If you are leaving make sure your Relocation Kit (this is part of your BSP) is ready and includes clothes, medication / important papers / bottled water / radio, etc. If you are staying make sure your Bushfire Survival Kit is ready. Mentally and physically You need to be prepared both mentally and physically for the ferocity of a bushfire.
ACT If you are leaving Use the fire danger rating and listening to the radio / internet for updates as the ‘trigger’ for your decision to ‘leave early’. Don’t leave a decision to leave early to the last minute, leaving the day or morning before a bushfire is the safest option. If you are staying You need firefighting equipment and protective clothing, e.g. length of hose to reach areas along and up the house, ladders inside and out, buckets, shovels, protective clothing, battery operated radio and spare batteries, smoke masks (this is part of your BSP). High fire danger days On hot, dry days when bushfires are likely, listen to local radio stations for bushfire information, drink plenty of water and, if you live on acreage or a farm, move stock to fully grazed areas. It is also a good idea to check water pumps and generators (if you have them) to make sure they are working, and prepare your protective clothing in case you need it quickly. Fire in the area Listen to local broadcasts or check websites for updates. Put on protective clothing and drink lots of water. Move car/s to a safe location. Close windows and doors and shut blinds. Take down curtains and move furniture away from windows. Bring pets inside and restrain them (leash, cage, or a secure room) and provide water. Block downpipes (at the top) and fill gutters with water if possible. Wet down the sides of buildings and close shrubbery in the likely path of the bushfire.
Wet down fine fuels close to buildings, turn on garden sprinklers for 30 minutes before the bushfire arrives. When the fire front arrives Disconnect hose and fittings and bring inside. Go inside for shelter, drink lots of water. Patrol and check for embers inside, particularly in the roof space. Check family and pets. Survive If you choose to stay Shelter in your house on the opposite side of approaching fire. Maintain a means of escape. Continually monitor conditions after the fire front has passed: Wear protective equipment. Go outside once it is safe. Check for small spot fires and burning embers: • inside roof space • under floor boards • under house space • on veranda and decks • on window ledges and door sills
• in roof lines and gutters • garden beds and mulch • woodheaps • outdoor furniture.
Monitor media outlets – radio, TV and internet. The safest place is to be away from the fire. Being involved in a fire may be one of the most traumatic experiences in your life. Survival and safety depends on the decisions you make. Are you bushfire prepared? Remember On days where the Fire Danger Rating is predicted to be extreme or catastrophic, leaving is the best option for you and your family’s survival. Hinterland Poetry Trail In July this year the finishing touches were given to the Hinterland Poetry Trail which combines poetry with the beauty, history and ambience of three varied settings: Fig Tree Walk and Little Yabba Creek near Kenilworth, Russell Family Park, Montville, and Maleny Heritage Trail. The poetry, written by three members of the Coast’s ‘Pente Poets’, is presented on sculptures which relate to their surroundings: a buttress root in brushed aluminium surrounded by pebbles at Little Yabba Creek, three colourfully imaged panels among the gardens at Russell Family Park, and three Helidon sandstone boulders carved and set along the walking track at Maleny. Make sure to take your smart-phone with you to hear the poets read the whole of the poems at Montville and Maleny, as only an excerpt is featured on the art work. QR codes are to be found at each site. The poems and designs for the sculptures are the result of intensive research, with inspiration drawn from the history, heritage and unique environmental features of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. This is part of the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast and the launching of the sites will be held in December 2017.

We are finally home after a trip that covered 20,735 kilometers. We experienced little car trouble, not even a tyre puncture, and that is an excellent result. It is necessary to keep a good watch on the tyres and monitor temperatures and pressures. We used pressures ranging from 15psi to 50psi depending on the terrain. The temperature I checked every 50km, again depending on the road surface. The van was another story. There were many issues, the worst being the loss of one of the water tanks. It was in a very remote area but we were able to use the second tank as well as the bottled water we were carrying. The fridge didn’t survive and we travelled to Broome for a replacement. There were other issues, but with an extensive range of tools and spares we were able to overcome most of these. An excellent trip with much to see, on one section we didn’t see a single traveler for two days. This is certainly one way to beat the crowds!

Music Today
I don’t know about you, but I love to move to the rhythm of music. It frees the mind, energizes the body, and opens the spirit to transformation. It is as natural as breathing for me. So today I want to explore the notion that in our movement we can become the music in physical form. How would you like to choreograph a solo dance piece inspired by the music you are listening to? I’m not proposing this need be for sharing with others. Just look at it as a way of really getting inside a piece of music on a deeper level by interpreting it naturally and instinctively in movement. And what a pleasurable way to keep fit while doing it! Art music (for example “classical” music) is probably best to use as it is more varied in rhythm, texture and dynamics and makes great use of tension and release, all of which assists you as an interpretive dancer! I’d like to suggest as well that if you are new to this you might extend your vocabulary of gestures to include the fingers, hands, toes and face and let beautiful slow movements as well as sudden fast thrusts feature in your piece. Let yourself be transported by the music – be as uninhibited as you can to represent the music you are hearing! This sort of exercise can be approached as an improvisation or you can choreograph your piece over a period of time and develop it into something truly substantial. The whole thing should be fun of course, but there can be a rigorous approach to your interpretation as well, with you perhaps mirroring the music with long-winded soft sounds having you slowly rolling on the floor, and high pitched music seeing you reaching for the sky! It doesn’t need to be that literal or dramatic of course. And if you want to use it as more of a Tai Chi-like meditation than a high powered session at the gym, that is good too. The most important thing is finding a new way of connecting with the music you are listening to. On that note, it probably doesn’t need to be said, but if, like me, you are no spring chicken, you might need to begin with the adagio movement so you get a good warm up before the allegro vivace! 50 years of Loving Landsborough art project
Following a conversation with Sunshine Coast Councillor Rick Baberowski, Michele Deveze from Red Door Art, members of the Landsborough Hall committee and community development worker Ana Greenfield, a decision was made to develop an art project as part of the 50 years of Loving Landsborough event. The project was an opportunity to think a bit more deeply about Landsborough; where it has come from and where it is headed, as well as linking people together in the process. Ana Greenfield said it was all connected to the 50th Anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast. “I love that the project is all about celebrating local artists and giving emerging artists the opportunity to workshop with professional artists right here in Glasshouse Country,” Ana said. “It helps build the profile of our artists and of Landsborough as an historic and cultural hub.” Opening night for the exhibition will be on Friday October 6 from 6pm until 8pm at Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall. Following the official talks at 6.30pm, each artist will introduce his or her work and discuss the inspiration and technique used to create the piece. Following opening night, there will also be a series of free or low cost workshops covering a variety of visual art techniques from lino printing and connecting to country, to making memory keepers, held with each of the artists on Fridays and through weekends from Friday October 13 to Sunday November 5. The project has been supported by Sunshine Coast Council’s Regional Arts Development Grant funding and Cr Baberowski’s discretionary fund. The exhibition will be open for viewing at the hall throughout October and November and then will travel to Beerwah for exhibition in the library for December and Vianta Café in January. From Vladivostok to Beerburrum Beerburrum Strongman Tim O'Shea competed in the Kolmar International Mas-Wrestling Cup at the Eastern Economic Conference held in Vladivostok, Russia, last week. In front of thousands of Russian dignitaries, diplomats and politicians, he placed fifth of nine international heavyweights in his first major Maswrestling event. Tim found the result even more pleasing after airline delays meant he missed a connection in China, and was forced to stay in Guangzhou overnight. As the airline accepted responsibility, new flights were found, but this time he was forced to travel via Moscow, around 9,000km away from Vladivostok! Another extra overnight stay in Moscow meant that Tim arrived in Vladivostok only an hour before his first bout, and arrived at the venue with only minutes to spare. Regardless of the travel delays, fifth in a field of vastly more experienced athletes was a great result for Tim, and he was especially pleased about beating two of the Russian athletes at their own sport.

This event means Tim has been fortunate to represent Australia internationally in two strength sports (the other being powerlifting), as well as competing nationally in Strongman and Highland Games. Tim said he was impressed by the Eastern Economic Forum, where the Mas-wrestling was held. "Due to the presence of Vladimir Putin, security was very tight, with an enormous police and military presence, checkpoints, and even a warship patrolling the harbour!" he said. Tim was fortunate to be able to make the most of his unexpectedly extended travel, and was able to do some sightseeing in Guangzhou (China), Moscow (including Red Square and the Kremlin), and Incheon (South Korea). Tim arrived back home in Beerburrum last Sunday, September 10, and is feverishly training for the East Coast Highland Games in Port Stephens next Saturday.

School News Spanish students’ success
Contributed by Debbie Ives Students from Beerwah State School recently participated in the Sunshine Coast Languages Speech Contest. All six students wrote and memorized a speech about themselves in Spanish which they read to the judges at the competition. While the students were all nervous, they did a fantastic job and performed extremely well as you can see in the results: In Year 4, Jessica came first; Year 5, Tahlia placed first, Macey placed second and Natalia received highly commended; and in Year 6, Ryan came first and Logan M received a highly commended.

Ginger Factory tour
By Sally Joyce Gingerbread men, honey, train and boat rides – what a great recipe for fun. Peachester State School Prep, Grade 1 and 2 students took an excursion to The Ginger Factory recently and learnt so much about how ginger is grown, harvested and turned into a delicious range of products. Wow! 70 huge tubs of sweet ginger cooking was a sight to see and smell. Students learnt many interesting things about the secret lives of honey bees and how important honey bees are for our future, because they are responsible for pollinating food crops. We must support the beekeeping industry and healthy populations of bees. The train ride on Moreton was a highlight as well as the Overboard boat ride to spot the Gingerbread Man in many countries of the world.

The day was designed to help improve the students’ skills in numeracy as well as to engage them in fun activities that get them ‘working like mathematicians!’ There were very specific links to the Australian Curriculum Content Strands, but equally as important were the strong links to the Proficiency Strands of Reasoning and Problem-Solving. For the morning and afternoon sessions, students completed ‘Maths Fiesta’ activities and during the middle session, teachers organised five different measurement activities that helped to teach content and skills that are currently being explored within classroom units. The overall goal of the Maths Fiesta Day was for students to see Maths as ‘engaging, accessible and fun!’
Year 11 and 12 Tourism excursion
Contributed by Jessica Grace Last month the Beerwah State High School’s year 11/12 Tourism class went to Dreamworld as part of their unit of study examining the impact that theme parks have on the local communities that they exist in. After an early start the girls attended a fascinating lecture presented by the Dreamworld educational officer about tourism, marketing, employment and branding. The girls were then able to explore the park and examine the socio-cultural, environmental and economic impacts that it has on the local Gold Coast community while also partaking in all the entertainment the park had to offer. The Giant Drop, The Buzz Saw and The Claw were some of the more extreme rides some of the braver members of our group were willing to try, the rest of us were supportive onlookers.

Beerwah State High School Year 9 and 10 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students had a great day at The Cube, QUT, participating in a Driving into the Future: Lego Robotics Workshop. Students worked collaboratively in robotics challenges where they solved problems and learned new skills. This was a fantastic opportunity to extend the students’ creative skills and encourage experimentation through trial and error. All the students worked exceptionally to program their driverless car in an emergency simulation activity.

Maleny Drive-in Double When was the last time you headed along to the drive-in? From Saturday, Australia Zoo’s new meerkat mob will be perched and ready to meet guests! The mob of 10 cheeky female meerkats and their carefully designed new home are long-awaited additions to Australia Zoo’s African section, situated at the far end of the savannah where the large giraffe herd, zebras and rhinos roam together. The new exhibit itself is a carefully constructed meerkat heaven, replicating the sandy desert plains where they live in the wild. Meerkats are extremely busy and inquisitive animals. They’re ultra-alert, love to dig and are constantly re-arranging the objects in their home, much to their keeper’s interest and surprise each day. For people who love meerkats but can’t get to the zoo to visit these little beauties in person, Australia Zoo will also host a live streaming virtual reality camera in their new home, so you can check out the live streaming of the meerkat’s daily activities on the Australia Zoo website. Vacation Care Fun at Glass House Early Education Centre This September school holidays Glass House Early Education Centre has a jam packed program of fun activities, local adventures and exciting excursions to keep school aged children happily entertained. The Centre staff are keen to develop programs that thoroughly engage the children. When creating their holiday schedule they work collaboratively with the children to find out what type of activities they would most enjoy, this feedback is used as the basis for the program. Week one kicks off on Monday September 18 with an ochre workshop by the talented assistant educator Reanna. Drawing upon her Indigenous background, children will be shown how to mix the ochre, paint and create their very own detailed artwork to display at home. On Tuesday, the children will be going on a ‘cooking adventure’ and the day will focus on creating a delicious dinner and dessert for their family to enjoy. Wednesday will involve learning new carpentry skills with a day of wood craft creation and fun.
On Thursday, the Centre bus will transport the children up to the beautiful Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve for a rainforest adventure that includes a walk through the stunning reserve, having a picnic lunch and enjoying fun activities. Friday September 22, will involve ‘mental gymnastics’ as the children will be out to beat the educators and flex their brainy muscles with a day of brain teasers, riddles and more! Week two will commence with a ‘messy games’ day on Monday – this is always a hugely popular holiday activity where the children love to get super messy so bring a change of clothes! Tuesday September 26 involves an exciting excursion to visit the Glasshouse Rural Fire Brigade where the children can hop into a real fire truck and check out all the equipment first hand. Wednesday is a ‘triple s’ day of fun with the Centre bus taking the children down to Skippy Park to enjoy scootering along the tracks followed by a yummy sausage sizzle lunch. Science is always a fascinating area of focus at Glass House Early Education Centre and
the schoolies will be heaps excited to making individual volcanos that will ‘erupt’ on Thursday September 28, as well as new and exciting science activities guaranteed to bring out the budding scientist in all the children. The week will wrap up with an end of holidays party and play day. Bookings are open now, so contact the Centre for more information. Some activities will incur an additional cost.

While the NBN tower going ahead at 2001 Old Gympie Road (Telecommunications Facility Installation at Mt Ngungun) is designed to provide a Fixed Wireless broadband internet service, a simple Telstra fixture called a co-locator could easily be included at the top of the tower to improve mobile phone reception in the area. Recent advice from the network planners indicates that although they are aware of poor mobile phone coverage in the area, at this stage no plans have been drafted to include a co-locator on the tower. Glass House residents who would appreciate better mobile phone reception can make a formal complaint to Telstra regarding this poor mobile phone coverage and requesting the inclusion of a Telstra co-locator on the Mt Ngungun tower. Re: Flashing school lights
In response to Mr Ron Watson’s letter asking who he should contact with regards to having the flashing school lights reinstated at the Glass House Mountains State School, the appropriate person would be the Acting Minister for Main Roads. I do wish Mr Watson the best of British luck though! I really hope he has some success because all of my requests to the Minister’s office over the years for the reinstatement of the lights have fallen on deaf ears. I have been campaigning on behalf of the Glass House Mountains’ students, parents and residents for several years to have this safety measure re-installed – without success. Similarly Peachester State School is still waiting for their flashing lights, with my requests on their behalf being ignored as well. I made a very clear commitment to the Glass House Mountains and Peachester communities that I will fight for these flashing lights and I will continue to advocate on their behalf until we see them installed. Thank you, Mr Watson, for raising this issue and for keeping our kids’ safety front and centre. I totally agree with Steven Lang's comments regarding the unsightly posters of Andrew Powell popping up everywhere locally. I was under the impression that there are strict council rules regarding the placement of any roadside signs, even if they are placed on private property, and that political signage is in fact only permissible in the run up to an election campaign? In recent years, local operators such as the Tavern in Glass House have been repeatedly denied council permission to advertise their business via ONE roadside sign, which is of no help to the many visitors passing through the area. So, how come Andrew Powell can get away with multiple signs? These signs are nothing more than a shameless act of self-promotion, and should be regarded as what they really are, i.e. visual pollution. Andrew Powell, please do us all a favour and remove them. Recently, I needed an urgent minor repair to my car's bumper bar and I was very impressed with the friendly helpful attention given by Maleny Smash Repairs. The Coalition Government is committed to securing reliable and affordable energy for all Australians. It might surprise you to know that nearly 50% of households have not changed retailers or plans for the last five years, which means some of you may not be getting the best deal on your electricity. The Government has recently secured an agreement with Australian energy retailers to make contact with families who are on expired discounted contracts and suggest how they can access better deals. The Coalition is also securing more gas supplies which will put downward pressure on electricity prices and we will legislate to remove the ability of networks to appeal the decisions of the Australian Energy Regulator, which in the past has allowed networks to pass $6.5 billion on to Australian consumers’ power bills. Abolishing this limited merits review is critical as network costs make up to 30% of the household power bill. I recently spent time visiting businesses in Glass House, Beerwah and Mooloolah as part of my bi-annual Small Business Roadtrip. I believe it is vital that I hit the streets regularly to gather views and feedback from our business community and this road trip certainly provided me with a good insight into the current challenges being faced by small business operators. My travels around the electorate during the last month have included visits to the Glasshouse Country RSL to present a new framed portrait of the Queen, the Beerwah Charity Sports Day and the Maleny Ambulance Station where I presented them with a new Australian Flag.

Maleny Landsborough Road Safety Survey – many of you continue to contact me, concerned with traffic on the Maleny-Landsborough Road, particularly at its intersections with Mountain View Road and the Maleny-Montville Road. Ideally, the road needs an additional overtaking opportunity coming up the range and full upgrades of both intersections, but in the meantime a number of residents have asked me to seek a lowering of the speed limit, so I am seeking your input through a survey which you can complete through my website at www. andrewpowell.com.au. Queensland on the fast train to success
A Liberal National Party Government will progress a $2.5 million business case for a South East Queensland Very Fast Train network linking the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay. A Very Fast Train network will enable Queenslanders to move to regional centres while still commuting to the capital and ease crippling congestion on the Pacific Motorway and Bruce Highway. This means you could live on the Sunshine and Gold Coasts for example but work in the Brisbane CBD and the travel time would be only 30 minutes.

A true Local Hero
Benjamin Lewis of Glass House Mountains is a true local hero. He recently took out the gold medal in the Under 65kg Special Needs Class at the Judo National Championships at the Gold Coast. At just 25 years of age Benjamin is truly inspiring and it was a great pleasure to meet Benjamin and contribute towards his expenses to compete at the Nationals through one of my Local Heroes Grants.
Division 5 - Sunshine Coast Mooloolah Kidz Skate Ramp opening
The grand opening of the Mooloolah Kidz Skate Ramp will be held on Saturday September 23 at 10am. The Mooloolah Valley Community Association and the Sunshine Coast Council have partnered in this fantastic project to provide the children of the area with a venue for socialising, skateboarding and scooter activities, all in the safety of the Recreation Ground precinct. Have your say on the draft Biosecurity Plan
Council is currently seeking community feedback on a new plan to respond to the threat of high risk invasive plants and animals. The Draft Sunshine Coast Council Local Government Area Biosecurity Plan has been developed in partnership with community, industry and government agencies and identifies 78 priority invasive plants and animals that pose a risk to our region, and outlines a proposed strategic response to guide management. Telstra update at Mooloolah
Following last month’s community meeting, Telstra visited Mooloolah School and will continue to work with the school and the Queensland Department of Education to increase capacity. The next update will be on October 5 at Kenny’s @ Mooloolah.
Wild dog baiting program underway
Sunshine Coast Council’s 1080 wild dog baiting program for Spring 2017 has commenced. The baiting program is scheduled to run from Monday September 4 until Friday September 29, by which time the last of the untaken baits will be removed from the ground and destroyed. The program will be delivered by council in conjunction with the local community groups across the region. Written notifications will be going out to all residents within the baiting area and large temporary signs will be erected on the road sides coming into these baiting areas.

Last month’s bushfires are a timely reminder of how important it is for our community to receive emergency alerts and disaster information quickly. Council has made it even easier to get the alerts you need, straight to your phone or tablet, with its CoastAlert notification service. The push notifications, linked to information on council’s award-winning Disaster Hub website, are a new feature of council’s app. To receive the alerts, simply download the SCCApp from the AppStore or Google Play and emergency notifications will be automatically sent to your smartphone and any other mobile devices with the app installed.
Road reseal program
Preparation for our Road Reseal and Rehabilitation Program is currently being undertaken across the region ahead of upcoming reseals, so you may see more prep works or patching than usual. This work fixes existing surface defects and mitigates the risk of underlying faults and helps to create a smooth, durable surface. The full reseals, which require different equipment and a different process, will then follow in due course.
I also spent time at the Glasshouse Christian College ahead of their Year 7s’ annual visit to Canberra. I was so pleased to be able to give the staff and students a personal tour of Parliament House. Unfortunately the group fell victim to the Canberra flu and came home very unwell. I hope that by the time this column goes to print they are well on their way to recovery! Glasshouse LINC, a group based out of the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, is made up of people passionate about supporting those struggling with their mental health, and their carers. LINC stands for Love Inclusion Nurture Care and can provide links to a network of services and community support. An enthusiastic group of ladies and men attending cooking demonstrations at the Landsborough Adventist Community Centre on Father’s Day, taste tested Thai Tofu Curry, an “exceptional” Hummus dip, a yummy Coconut Raspberry Chia dessert and a tasty Asian dressing on two different salads. A demonstration of specific interest included, ‘How to build a salad as a complete meal,’ using items from section 1 - leaves, section 2 - vegetables and fruit (red/purple/yellow/orange/green/white), section 3 - protein: legumes, beans, nuts, grains, and section 4 - seeds. Angela Saunders, guest speaker, author, food researcher and senior accredited practising dietitian at Sanitarium Health and Wellbeing, inspired her audience with a clear and practical presentation of ‘Living longer healthier lives with nature’s plant foods’, and challenged her audience with the marvellous protective health benefits of eating a rainbow of colours. Professor Brendan Mackey from Griffith University will speak at the Maleny Community Centre Verandah Room at 11am on Saturday September 23 on how wildlife corridors can help our native plants and animals adapt to Climate Change. Everyone is welcome to come along. Professor Mackey is director of the Griffith Climate Change Response Program. He is a leader in his field of the interactions between climate change, biodiversity and land use. Hinterland Bush Links has been involving the community in restoring habitat and creating wildlife corridors across the Sunshine Coast region over the past six years. The 98th Kenilworth Show and Rodeo will be on Saturday September 23 with the day commencing at 8am with show jumping and two rings of show horse events. There will be wood chopping covering 11 events starting at 10am. The NRA rodeo with prize money totalling $5,150 gets underway at 10am and the program includes: open bull ride, saddle bronc, bareback, steer undecorating, breakaway roping, junior and juvenile events, and barrel racing. There will also be thoroughbred pig racing, an animal nursery, ice cream vans, real coffee, and a laser light display from 7.15pm. A food canteen will be running all day, there will be dinner at night and a bar will operate from 10am to 10pm with live entertainment into the night. Entry is adults $15, children 5-15 years $5. Parking is available in the school grounds opposite the show. The Glasshouse Country Orchid Society will be presenting this year’s Spring Orchid Show on September 22 and 23 at the Beerwah Community Hall. The annual Spring Show is quite spectacular and shouldn't be missed, after browsing around the gorgeous displays, you can sit out on the deck with a cuppa and light refreshments and watch the potting demonstrations. All members and one former member who worked so hard to bring about such a wonderful day were thanked. Sally Joyce informed us about a village festival to be held in Peachester on October 14. Coral Beutel and Jenny Wellsteed were invited to speak on their recent trip to Canada. Some of the highlights from their trip were the bushfires raging in British Columbia and the thick smoke obscuring the views. They enjoyed the Calgary Stampede, the spectacular train journey, beautiful hanging baskets and the scenery was stunning. Patron Margaret Ferris presented Coral with her life membership badge and a gift for her new garden. We welcome back Michael Keegan as President, Robyn Brown as Secretary and Trevor Heitman as Treasurer. Many hands make light work, and all the other minor positions have also been filled, so we can look forward to another successful year for the club. From the churches A team of 20 people from our local church have just returned from Cunnamulla (southern western Queensland). We visited a minister who supports families across 450,000 square kilometres, and most of the region is now six years drought declared. While the townships have bore water, when you travel less than a kilometre out of town there’s not a blade of grass to be seen. The people are doing it physically, emotionally and spiritually tough and many are overwhelmed. Life in that space is extremely different compared to life on the Coast. Our local team offered practical help with maintenance, painting, etc, in the town and on properties so they would know they are not forgotten nor alone and as a means of boosting morale while they wait for a new season. For those times when life is tough and we personally become overwhelmed by not seeing a way forward, we can become despondent, pessimistic, frustrated, even angry that no one seems to be around to care. To celebrate Seniors Week, members of the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Community Church sponsored a lunch for 25 guests from Glasshouse Country Care. Entertainment was provided by the Caboolture Community Choir. The Twinnies from the Pelican and Seabird Rescue Service gave a short talk and over $135 was collected to support their organisation. Guests were treated to a buffet vegetarian lunch.

Contributed by Ken Barker Last Thursday Priscilla Vickers 10 played Sally Adams 4 in Division 4, while Donna Manning and Kath Smith proved too strong for Vince Carbery winning 20 to 19. 2017 has been a good year for the ladies in the club, and the final results record winners in division 1, Donna Manning, division 2, Donna Manning; division 3, Sarah Widin, and division 4, Helen Andrews. Congratulations to all players who competed. Thank you also to Vince and Val Carbery and all others for refereeing and participating. In social play last Thursday, Helen Andrews and Ken Barker 19 beat Kath Smith and Frances Harper 7, while Vince Carbery 15 defeated Nick Cram 9. On Friday Donna Manning 21 was successful against Nick Cram 13. On Sunday Donna continued her winning ways to score 23 - 13 against Vince Carbery. Also on Sunday, Helen Andrews 14 fought well to down Kath Smith 11, and Ken Barker struggled to beat a vastly improved Robert Elliot 11 - 9. All eyes are now turned to regaining the Fitchen Trophy which is to be played on Saturday. This is a doubles competition against Nambour Club with a trophy donated by Lew Fitchen, a past member. We have not won it for a few years. 2017 is the time. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. The Wagtails had a bye and the Wikings had a forfeit win. The Wildcats were at Nambour Showgrounds against the No Faults. It was close for most of the day but Pauline, Stacey, Libby and Jenie couldn’t bring it home. Whistlers had a tough match against the top team Maroochydore Meteors – only winning one set, but enjoying some good tennis. Great effort Brenda, Donna, Liz and Maree. The Witta Wompoos were in scintillating form on Sunday at Maleny tennis courts where they defeated the Division 2 leaders Gympie Silver by 11 sets to 1 set. It was a very impressive all-round performance by the team which should set them up for a 'finals' appearance in November. Very impressive indeed. The Witta Tennis Golf Challenge is on at Maleny Golf Club on Sunday October 22, with a 7am tee off. Cost is $30 to Witta Tennis (includes smoko snags and a barbeque lunch); Green fees to be paid in the club house - Gold Members free and $15 for all others. This is a 4 ball Ambrose competition. Maleny Bowls Club
Contributed by Jim King Neither a $140 jackpot, which wasn’t won, nor the morning tea were sufficient to attract as large a crowd of bowlers to Tuesday’s members games as we had hoped for. Perhaps, members returning from trips, and the beautiful bowling weather will assist. The winners on Tuesday were Sandra Kapetanic, Joe Walters and Relma Godfrey. Wednesday evening barefoot social bowls was well attended. This week we again played twelve ends of pairs. Winners were Paul and Min; Tony and Steve; Kay and Joe; Tom and Ray and, for the second week running the backbone of the Tutors team Lynne and Jacqui. Touchers were won by Paul Kemp, Joe Walters and Graham Squires. Toni Walters had a good evening winning the lucky draw and the money board. Steve Porter also picked up a lucky draw bottle of wine. Social barefoot bowls will continue for the next two or three weeks after which a new competition will begin. So, start to get your teams of four organised. Come along on any of the next few Wednesday nights and let Miles know your team details (or leave a message on the club phone). If you don’t have a team, come along anyway and Miles will find a team for you. No experience necessary. Bowls and instruction supplied along with a delicious sausage burger all for just $13. Friday scroungers was well attended. Visitors and social bowlers are welcome on Fridays at 2.30pm for a 3pm start. Winners were Margaret Ginns, Scott Alexander, a troubling Gary Darcy, Joe Walters and Miles Allen. Kathy King won the money board and Ray Oldfield was present when his number was drawn for the Brouhaha prize in the members draw. Monthly jackpot pairs competition is coming up on September 25 and club members are encouraged to participate. Out&About Bowls day a rolling success Family and friends of the Beerwah Kindy were recently given the challenge to don their colourful sombreros, and for the gents to bring their moustaches, because there was a ‘nacho’ ordinary barefoot bowls fundraising event held on August 26. With awesome weather and plenty of enthusiasm from the bowlers, the day held at Club Glass House was a huge success and it reached their target to purchase a native beehive for the kindy. The Beerwah Kindy kids would like to thank all the sponsors and everyone who supported the event.

Last week the Maleny Garden Club held their 65th anniversary and friendship day at the Maleny Showground. There were almost 200 people in attendance on the day, including guest poets, a guest speaker, musicians and members of many different gardens clubs from across
South East Queensland. One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of life membership to Molly Cocks and Joyce Butterfield. Not surprisingly the room was beautifully decorated with all types of floral arrangements made and grown by talented members.
