Hi Everyone Here at GCNews Central – Glass House Mountains we are currently focused on all things renovation – and not just the continuing work we are doing on our renovation – but on our 2011 Renovation Guide. We have had so much interest from advertisers to be a part of the publication that we have had to increase the size of it by eight pages to accommodate all the ads. And yes the money man is happy about that – but this means we now need to find some additional stories – so I am putting the call out for anyone who we may be able to write about – or at least could give us some tips on the lessons they learnt while renovating? Or have you recently undertaken a renovation and have some excellent ‘Oh my god’ before photos that can be used in stark contrast to the ‘absolutely wow’ after photos?

The former Coochin Creek Rural Fire Brigade has had a recent name change and is now badged as Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade. According to First Officer, Lou Spann, the name is all that has changed, the reason being to better reflect the population base. “For us it is ‘business as usual’ and an opportunity to register our appreciation for the continued business and community support shown to the brigade, notably the volunteer commitment,” he said. “Given we cover a large area, 200 square kilometres in fact, up to Sippy Downs out to Bellvista and Golden Beach, Pelican Waters and through to the back of Beerburrum, we are dependent on people power. “While we have an 18 strong team, we are calling interested parties to register with us so we can have 25 trained volunteers in order to run two shifts and the four trucks in our fleet. We also require support people for behind the scenes. “It is all about being prepared and as we are coming up to the wildfire season, which can range anywhere between September and February, we are mindful we have had a big growing season with all the rain over the last two and a half years; that has created a heap of fuel, so it is essential to always be at the ready,” said Lou. “Anybody over the age of 16 years and in reasonably good health is eligible to register for

full training which is all free and naturally we provide all the protective gear. “You don’t need to have a truck licence but certainly if you are wishing to obtain one, we can assist with this. “We provide hands-on training and our four vehicles include a tanker, a medium appliance and two trucks. “Our tanker is a full fire-fighting vehicle and our ‘51’ is a medium appliance; our work encompasses rural and highway fires,” he said. “There’s tremendous satisfaction to be found in the community work and team effort and I’ll be keeping people informed about our open day coming up in a couple of months at the station, which is located 1.5 kilometres down Roys Road from the Big Mower in the big red shed - you can’t miss us.” For further information about the Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade, becoming a member, training or advice, contact Lou on 0438 389 998.

“The aim of the workshop is to get all the movers and shakers in Beerwah in one place so we can talk about what we all do,” said Holly Aston, Community Development Officer for Hinterland Community Development Association said. “There’s a lot of different things that happen in Beerwah, and lots of different people doing great stuff, but a lot of the time we don’t know what each other is doing, so this an opportunity for us to get to know each other, to support what each other does. It may mean that we can work together in the future. “It’s a great opportunity for Council, business, community groups, schools and other interested residents to get together in the one spot. People who are passionate about the community and want to get involved are certainly welcome,” she said. One outcome hoped to be achieved at the Workshop is the setting up of a website for groups and organisations to register various events so that clashing of dates can be avoided.

Local inventor ‘Putting’ golfers first If you have a golfer in the family, there will be one thing on the top of their Christmas wish list this year, a Pro-1 Putting Green. Inventor Faruk Buzaki, from Glass House Mountains and a keen golfer himself, first had the idea about five years ago. “There’s no way you can get a putting green in your backyard, so you can practice putting like at the golf course, without tearing up your whole yard and spending lots and lots of money,” Faruk said. “I thought how can I make a putting green for my backyard, or anyone else’s backyard, that you just walk it in and drop it on the ground? I’ve got friends who are mad keen golfers and they said, yeah it would be good to have something like that and it just went from there,” he said. It’s taken just one year for Faruk to get serious about the idea and turn the putting green into a reality.

“The process is tedious,” he said, “it’s a lot of R and D, research and development. Mostly getting the turf right, getting exactly the right turf was the big key, so it plays like a real golf green. Everyone that sees it just loves it.” That’s probably because of the many advantages of the Pro-1. At 4.8 x 2.5 wide it is available with one or two holes, is great for chipping practice as well as putting, it doesn’t need mowing, and it can be mowed and whipper-snipped around. You can put in on grass, concrete, the patio or wherever you like. It’s also easy to install in just 30 minutes, you can put contours underneath to change the shape and there’s no maintenance. It took a lot of design work for Faruk to perfect the product. “I’ve got an engineering background and that helped. It is one thing to have the idea; the other one is to design it in such a way that you can produce it at a low cost. An engineering background helped to do that,” he said. The first public release of the Pro-1 Putting Green was at the recent Queensland Garden Expo at Nambour. If you missed seeing it they will also be at Farm Fantastic at Caboolture on July 15, 16 and 17. “It’ll be good,” said Faruk. “My wife’s involved, and my two girls, they’re 14 and 16 and they’re really excited about it. It’ll be good for them to see how the whole business operates. By Lea Parkes The former Beerwah RSL and Citizen’s Club held their first meeting last Tuesday night at their new Glass House Mountains premises with the main objective of the night to sort out their new name. With 113 members attending on the night and voting on two possible names – the winner with a clear margin of 20 per cent was Club Glasshouse, the other contender was Glasshouse Country Club. From comments I heard, quite a few members thought having Country Club in the title might have been misleading as visitors could arrive expecting a golf course and fancy trappings. President Denis Steer did share with the members some detail about the current renovations that are being undertaken to the club which will see a new kitchen, a dining room and coffee shop as part of what the club will be able to offer.

Crookneck Retreat beckons Recently Brett Standring of Crookneck Retreat at Glass House Mountains was awarded a prize by Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd for producing a video of the business which he uploaded to YouTube. Earlier, Brett was a participant in a digital workshop called ‘Create your own video for YouTube’, in which participants learnt about shooting, editing, uploading, optimising and sharing video. Following the workshop, participants put into practice what they had learnt and produced their own videos and posted them to YouTube. Crookneck Retreat and Coolum Surf School videos were judged the most creative and were the two winners. Both received a professionally produced video package as a prize. Visitors’ hosts at Crookneck Retreat are Brett and his wife, Megan. “The workshop was well worth going to and I learnt not to be afraid of technology, but the value in using it." Brett said. We will be able to post video on our website and YouTube, providing more interactive and visual information for people. I definitely feel more confident producing video now.”

Beerwah’s 3.5 million boost Sunshine Coast Council recently announced it will spend $3.5 million on the township of Beerwah over the next four years, so we headed to Beerwah Marketplace to ask residents how they would like to see the funds spent.

And they need a footpath along Simpson Street into the shopping centre, people have to walk on the road,” said Robert. “The new road, that’s not very appealing when you come off the roundabout and into the lights. Also you’ve got to have something really good in Beerwah to keep young people here, like a roller skating centre or something like that,” said Noela.

I think that’s probably one of the biggest areas that needs looking at. Peachester State School entered the 2011 Glasshouse Rotary Sustainability competition. The competition encourages students to do things that save energy and make the school environment more sustainable. The students, with the outstanding help from Dorothy Robb, Troy Pearce, and Jenny Martyr run the Enviro Club. The club has been busy this year expanding their Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Conservation Program with the construction of a Birdwing vine trellis, germinating vine seeds, planting new vines and removing weeds. The club has also reduced waste through its composting program, expanded the veggie garden and saved buckets of energy with the introduction of electricity panels. Judging was completed at the Garden Expo. Peachester State School won the Ambassador for Sustainability Award in the categories of

Special family time at Beerwah Kindy Contributed by Nicole Godwin Term two has come and gone and the students at Beerwah Kindy got to share it all with important family members! One of the most anticipated events for the year was Grandparents’ Day. Grandparents came from near and far to explore the Kindy with their grandchildren and participate in selected activities. The children also cooked a cake to share with everyone for morning tea. Before the visit, the children were asked to fill in a questionnaire with their grandparents to answer questions about ‘what it was like when they were young’. There were many comments coming home to parents about these discussions, for example “They didn’t even have ‘puters (computers) mummy!” This term the fire brigade made a much loved visit to talk about fire safety. All the children were most excited to hear the siren, which was very loud, and to hold the fire hose with a fire fighter. They also talked about some of the equipment they used and why they use it.

‘Rhythm of Life’ - another hit for Beerwah High

After a short and intensive rehearsal period, Beerwah High recently staged a theatre restaurant called ‘Rhythm of Life’. With over 100 students and more than 20 staff members involved, the show proved to be an entertaining showcase of the arts. There was a wide variety of acts including song, dance and instrumental performances interspersed with humorous skits.

Beerwah High students The opening number, ‘I’ve Got Rhythm’ demonstrated tap and stomping by fifty students, while the finale, ‘Rhythm of Life’ was a fitting and energetic conclusion to a great night. A three course dinner was catered and served to 120 audience members by Year 11 Hospitality students. During the meal, music was provided by a diverse range of artists including a jazz ensemble. The Art and Home Economics Departments worked collaboratively on the venue, decorating the foyer and tables using a red and silver cabaret theme. Audience members were heard to say, “Beerwah High never does a bad show” and “It’s wonderful to see what our kids can produce when they work together!” The directors, Deb Holland and Rebecca Stephenson said, “in the end that’s what it’s all about - giving the students the opportunities to develop confidence, self-discipline and teamwork and cooperation while extending their potential. At the same time they are having a great time. These are the memories they’ll take away with them from high school.”

Everyday office tasks Fast internet speeds these days mean that we can do almost everything via the web, or on a website, but we should also remember that there are still 100 per cent free desktop software applications out there which can automate and make more efficient the majority of our our general office processes. Two of these processes I would like to touch on today are PDF creation and the transfer of larger-thanusual files. PDF Creation Until recently we had to buy expensive Adobe Acrobat software in order to create PDF files, which are in such common use today. Luckily for small businesses, we can now save as PDF directly from Microsoft Office, to which the majority of us have access. Office 2010 users should find this option built natively into their Office products, but Office 2007 users may need to install a small, free plug-in which Microsoft has released. To get a hold of this plug-in, just go to www.microsoft. com/download and in the search box type “save as pdf”, then follow the links. Sending Large Files I have spoken before about YouSendIt, the software which integrates into your Outlook email software and helps you send large files via email. Unfortunately YouSendIt is now starting to charge for their services, so it doesn’t hurt to have other methods in mind. Such an alternate method would be to split your large files into smaller chunks, which you can then email out and re-assemble at the other end. Keeping your file chunks to around 4.5 MB each will allow them to be sent without issue. One application which will allow you to do just this is GSplit, available from www.gdgsoft.com/gsplit

2011 Management Committee - Cr Anna Grosskreutz was on hand to announce the outcome of the election of officers at the 2011 Annual General Meeting of Friends of Bankfoot House on Sunday, June 19. Ron Gillinder will enter his fourth year as President while Helen Page takes on the role of Vice-President. Ron welcomed back Keith Pennell as Secretary, Elaine Reeves as Treasurer and Jo Barrett as Committee member. Ron said he felt fortunate in having such a competent and committed team pursuing the worthwhile objectives of the Friends of Bankfoot House. Life Memberships - The meeting also saw Ethel Burgess and Bill Ferris awarded Life Membership of Friends of Bankfoot House. Both Ethel and Bill have been great supporters of the work of the Friends since the volunteer group was formed in 2006. Their availability and keen memories have contributed greatly to our store of anecdotal and factual history of the house. As descendents, they both have first-hand knowledge of the families who lived there. Ethel remembers fondly her grandmother, Clementina Burgess, who lived at Bankfoot House for all of her 85 years. Clementina was the youngest daughter of the first settlers in the Glasshouse Mountains district, William and Mary Grigor. Bill Ferris is the grandson of Clementina and William Burgess. Bill’s mother, Mary, was the eldest child of Clementina and William. Bankfoot House Redevelopment - The Sunshine Coast Council has committed funds over the next two years, from the heritage levy, to pursue the vision of Bankfoot House being formally established as a house museum. Stage one of the proposed capital works will see the construction of a workroom and store within the property’s boundary as well as public toilets and off-street parking. With all proposed works, care will be taken to preserve the historic integrity of the Bankfoot House site. If you have a taste for local history or would like to learn new skills why not come along to the house and meet the volunteers. Noela Frizzo is certainly a very knowledgeable lady when it comes to growing orchids. Sally Joyce, with help from husband Dan and mother-in-law Irene, had the garden looking at its best for our meeting, thanks to you all for your great effort. Guest speaker Noela showed off a selection of her orchids, she spoke about growing some of our local native orchids and their requirements to grow and flower successfully. Cattleyas and Dendrobiums are some of the easier orchids to grow and Noela explained about mixtures to use, fertilising, watering and dividing. Members asked many questions and some took advantage to purchase orchids from the selection that Noela had brought along. President John Innes gave a vote of thanks and presented Noela with a fruit basket. Our stand at the recent garden expo in Beerwah proved very popular. Many people showed a lot of interest in the display, particularly in the examples of edible weeds and Coral Beutel’s floral art displays were popular. Thanks to everyone who helped put the display together and for supplying the plants, it was a great effort. The July meeting is Friendship Day, so please make a special effort to support the competition bench. For July only, members can enter up to two entries in each section. Flower of the month is Camellia and three miscellaneous. If you can, bring along a good plant or gift for the rolling raffle and a home made slice would be very welcome. Parents should be keeping a closer eye on their teenagers. I’m getting fed up with the amount of teens walking the streets in the late hours of the night. A lot of the time they appear intoxicated, and are quite rowdy, making lots of noise. As the parent of a young child, this is a constant nuisance, as it often wakes them up, and then takes a while to get them back to sleep. On a few occasions they have also thrown rocks at houses, and banged on doors. Sometimes it’s only a handful of teens, but it’s not uncommon to see large groups of around 20-30. Residents adjoining the proposed Optus mobile phone tower site in Landsborough have received a letter from Aurecon stating that ‘due to advice received by council, the notification period for application MCU11/0058 has restarted from 5th July 2011 to 15th August 2011’. This means that anyone who did not have time to lodge a submission regarding this proposed tower or who wishes to submit a more detailed one, can now do so until August 15. Any submissions done previously are still valid. When contacted for clarification, council advised that the reason for the restarting of the submission period was that there was a state referred wetland within 100 metres of the site and this means that instead of 15 days for a submission period, there has to be a 30 days submission period. This wetland is on the eastern side of Tytherleigh Avenue (the proposed site of the tower). An amazing turn of events. How is it that this wetland was not seen when the application was made? Isn’t this what council officers do so that developers know what the requirements are for their application? Apparently not. The council officer advised that a submission by LACA Inc was not valid because it was received after the closing date. One submission was posted on May 27 and other submissions from various residents, along with the petition were delivered in person on June 14. These documents were stamped by the council officer at Caloundra on the morning of June 14. Community Associations across the Sunshine Coast have been expressing concerns about the operation of this council since its inception. I was returning to Beerwah by train recently when one of the passengers emptied his stomach contents all over the floor of the carriage. The immediate reaction to this was the mass movement of all the passengers to the other end of the carriage. The second reaction was the prompt attendance of QR staff that covered the mess in an absorbent material, apparently to soak up as much as possible. Thirdly, another QR staff member was waiting at the next station with a bucket and mop to clean the residue. It was not a particularly pleasant event but I have to praise the prompt attendance of the QR rail staff for attending to such a mess. From go to whoa it was all cleaned up within three stations. Why is Optus so secretive?

I am very concerned in regards to the apparent secrecy that has shrouded the Optus application for the proposed phone tower at Landsborough. As far as I am aware, the only notification notices that were sent out were to some property owners directly concerned with the project, one resident in Leach Avenue, Savage Landscaping (on whose property the tower is proposed for) and Q Rail. It was interesting to note that Q Rail received their notice on April 19, 2011, returning their written response to council on April 20, 2011 while the Leach Avenue resident’s notice was dated May 19, 2011, one month later. Why should there be one date for one sector, and another for a couple of local community members? Yes, admittedly, a notice of development was displayed outside Savage Landscaping in Tytherleigh Avenue but there is very little pedestrian traffic past there. A very large amount of vehicular traffic does though, but they do not stop to read some sign in small print. Whether or not Electro Magnetic Emissions, is real or not, it is a factor which should not be overlooked at any time. Despite what ‘the experts’ say, from all electrical circuits, radio, television, microwaves etc (the list is endless), and with whatever electromagnetic emissions that may or may not be radiating from the afore mentioned, the amounts, large or small, could add up to a surprisingly high figure. There was no community consultation connected to this matter. The project does not comply with Council height regulations.....regulations in regards to tourist routes....and according to the telecommunication act, the correct distance from the school does not comply. Is there any reason Optus maybe doesn’t want to face the local people? Also, a proposal for a tower only a matter of metres away was rejected by the people only just a few years ago, on very many similar grounds. Beerwah is about to be rocked to its core, with rock ‘n roll couple, Danny and Lyndell Berends, turning back the clock to the music of the 50’s and 60’s and offering learn-to-dance rock ‘n roll classes in Beerwah. With winter upon us, dancing is the best way to stay warm, get some exercise and have a great time. “All you need to do is turn up any Monday night from July 18 and take the first step onto the floor.” Beginners’ classes are broken down into simple, easy to learn steps that will have you dancing in no time and all the steps are revised each week. Bruce Highway petition

I have launched a petition calling for the Australian Government to widen the Bruce Highway to six lanes between Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast. I have spoken in the Australian Parliament on the issue numerous times and also written to the relevant Minister and the Prime Minister about the issue. It is very important that we get upgrades to the highway to ensure it is as efficient and safe as possible and able to meet the demands of our growing population. The petition attracted 391 signatures over two days at the Maleny Show and it is now well over 400. I’m urging concerned Sunshine Coast residents to make an effort to add their names to the list so we can put pressure on the Government to address this vital need. The petitions are available for signing at my office at the corner of Point Cartwright Drive and Nicklin Way, Buddina, and also at the office of Andrew Powell MP, 70 Maple Street, Maleny. Nominations are now open for the 14th Annual National Student Leadership Forum on ‘Faith and Values’ to be held in Canberra from September 15 - 18. Peachester road works progress

My latest update from the Department of Transport and Main Roads is that works to repair Peachester Road will commence before Christmas. Unfortunately this is the best indication I have been given. The Department acknowledges the inconvenience the lane closures are causing residents. Cold comfort I know. A project page has been created on the Department’s website which will aim to update residents so make sure you have a look to get any new updates - www.tmr.qld.gov.au/projects/name/p. aspx. I am also advised that asphalt overlay works will be undertaken on a section of Kilcoy-Beerwah Road, between Commissioner’s Flat Road and Maleny-Stanley River Road from Monday, June 27 weather permitting. This work will take until the end of the year and will result in lane closures and reduced speed limits. Motorists may experience delays of up to 10 minutes in this area.

Update on north coast rail timetable

I know there are many rail commuters who have been greatly affected by the TransLink train timetable changes that came into effect on June 6, 2011. The first few weeks were an unmitigated disaster for commuters. The 5.20pm ‘Nambour Crusher’ train, as it has been so fondly named, has been the cause of most of the frustration for commuters. Bowing to community pressure, TransLink and Queensland Rail have recently introduced an additional Nambour service, along with some other small changes, that we hope will alleviate most of the pain for commuters. Coast Guard Caloundra’s Fishing Competition conducted from June 24 to 26 was a resounding success. Commenting on the weekend activities, Flotilla Commander Tony Barker thanked all sponsors and participants for their involvement. “The business community and fishers have this year shown that in troubled times they understand that we, as Coast Guard volunteers, need their support to ensure that boating in our district is a little safer than it would be if it were not for their efforts.” He made special mention of the Caloundra Power Boat Club for making their facilities available as the competition venue. Patron Mark McArdle Member for Caloundra commented, “I congratulate the Caloundra Coast Guard on running a fantastic weekend that included a boat raffle and a fishing competition. The portable design of the grandstands means that they can be easily moved around the complex depending on the type of event taking place. The grandstands will be ready to use from the start of July in time for the 40th Annual Charity Sports Event fast approaching in August.

Athletes warm up with Sunshine Coast winter carnival

The track and field season warms up on Sunday, July 31, at the annual University of the Sunshine Coast Athletics Club Winter Carnival at the club’s Sippy Downs tartan track. The event attracts strong nominations from throughout south-east Queensland with age groups for males and females from under eight to masters. St Joseph’s Nudgee College from Brisbane and Fairholme College from Toowoomba will be sending squads to compete in the carnival. Registrations and the event program are available online at www.uscathleticsclub.asn. A state-of-the-art electronic timing system will be in use during the meet. This timing system clocks to 1000th of a second and has Olympic recognition. Medals are awarded to all place getters except in relays. On-line only nominations close on Friday, July 29.
