Wow, I can’t believe that we are at the pointy end of the year and on the countdown to holidays! Yes, that’s right, just as we do every year we put a final paper out (a little bit early) in the week before Christmas and then Brownie and I and all the rest of team take (what we think is) a well-earned break. Have to say, while the kids might be counting the number of sleeps until the big fella in red arrives bearing gifts, my countdown is the one that ends in us jumping in the car and hitting the open road! I guess that I must have mentioned I was getting excited about the ‘Christmas Road Trip’ to the crew here, so when we had our Christmas lunch last week they packed us a great ‘Road Trip Survival Pack’. I would in particularly like to thank them for the ‘car deodoriser’, and the ‘ear plugs’ which I can only assume are for Brownie to use to either drown out my radio singalongs or possibly my snoring. Yes, my idea of a really great road trip is, after the first hour of excitement and singing along to the radio, to then just roll back the seat and have a sleep until the next scheduled Regards, servo/food/toilet stop. As we go to print for this week, it is only eight more sleeps – can’t wait, first stop Stanthorpe!

Local News Storm causes massive damage across region

The trail of destruction left by last Saturday’s storm may take weeks to fully repair, and cost many hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to authorities. At the time of going to print (midday Monday) there were still over 300 properties in Beerwah, Landsborough, Mt Mellum and Mooloolah without power. At the height of the aftermath, over 13,000 homes across the region suffered power blackouts, with the region also being hit with more than 130,000 lightning strikes. Energex were working to have all properties reconnected with electricity by late Monday (December 11). With the eye of the storm tracking in a belt between Landsborough and Glass House, damage to houses and properties, and disruption to roads, was extensive. Such was the force of the storm that large trees were snapped like matchsticks and felled in a tangled mess, dangerously including many interspersed powerlines. Queensland Rail Chief Executive Officer Nick Easy said the storm caused significant damage to the Sunshine Coast rail line, with at least 20 fallen trees resulting in a large amount of debris and more than four kilometres of damage to the overhead power lines. Trains were subsequently cancelled between Caboolture and Gympie as lines were checked for damage, with services suspended until Tuesday. Steve Irwin Way was described as “like a war zone” on social media, with debris littering the stretch

Many businesses were forced to close, including Australia Zoo, Landsborough BP and Beerwah Hotel, which lost an entire bistro full of food due to the blackout. Landsborough Pines Caravan Park suffered damage, with a large tree falling across two cars and a caravan, with no injuries reported. Council reported that the affected residents were safely accommodated for the night. Sunshine Coast Council has advised that residents affected by the storm can take storm damage green waste into the Beerwah waste facility on Roberts Road free of charge until 5pm on Monday December 18. Council will be dealing with vegetation on their parks and assets, and anyone wishing to report storm damage relating to Council land can call the Customer Service Centre on 5475 7272.

From February 1, 2018, HQPlantations will permanently close its private property at Mawhinney Logging Area (LA) to the public to address unlawful and inappropriate access and associated damage to the road network and plantation forest. The private plantation road network in Mawhinney LA has been damaged by four wheel drives and motor bikes to the extent that it has become unusable for forest operations or fire management. Without restricting access, repaired roads are unlikely to remain in good condition. Operational access to the area for fire-fighting is critical to ensure proper protection of HQPlantations’ plantation timber resource, used for local housing construction, and to prevent any fires that might start in Mawhinney LA from spreading to private property or national park. Rows of pine trees have been destroyed to make numerous illegal recreation tracks which devalues the timber resource and raises potential environmental issues due to erosion and
sediment runoff. Mawhinney LA will be closed to all public access including walking, cycling or horse riding and all motor vehicles (including motor bikes and four wheel drives) unless the prior written permission of HQPlantations has been obtained. The rest of the Plantation Licence Area will continue to be open to the public for lawful recreation unless otherwise indicated for forest operations.

Say No to Council’s Casino Last week we brought you the story from Federal MP Andrew Wallace encouraging resident to have their say on the suggestion from Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson for a casino to be built on the Sunshine Coast. At the end of the story we asked readers to let us know what you think. The responses were overwhelming against the casino proposal. Ralph Donelan from Glass House Mountains said that although he is not supporter of Andrew Wallace, it was heartening to see any politician standing up for what’s left of family values these days. “No doubt proponents of the casino have promised glowing benefits of all kinds and

perhaps even to ratepayers to make it sound palatable,” said Ralph. “However, experienced observers are more likely to be aware of the overriding negatives that every casino brings to their surrounding communities. “Given that we employ councillors to look after the basic welfare of our community and little more; how have we come to the point where there is a supposedly arms-length 'business arm' of this same council who are asking that we accept such an inappropriate proposal? “Quite simply, a casino is not what I want my council to be involved with in any capacity.” Ivan Koch of Maleny feels that we do not need more opportunities to gamble. “We need to understand ‘the harder and smarter I work the luckier I get’. The Queensland Government and others need to stop wasting money and optimise what they do have, not get more and waste more.” Paul Gilmour-Walsh of Maleny strongly disagrees with the Mayor’s proposal for a casino. “We already have too many gambling opportunities available.” Denis O’Neill from Reesville asks us to think more deeply on the matter. “Let's think about the overall net benefits to society of any casinos already operating in Australia. Would a casino on the Sunshine Coast be any different?”
When informed of the responses to the story, Andrew Wallace reiterated his belief that the Sunshine Coast Council’s plan to change the character of our region by encouraging a casino to be built at their Maroochydore CBD development is emerging as one of the biggest threats to the future of our local community. “A casino on the Coast would add to the cost of living pressures on many of our hardworking families, increase crime and anti-social behaviour, and drive up drug and alcohol abuse,” said Andrew. “This plan risks driving more family breakdowns, and increasing rates of mental and physical illhealth throughout the region. “I have spoken to many local people about this and the overwhelming feedback I have received tells me that Sunshine Coast residents do not want a casino here. “We are not the Gold Coast, nor should we want to be. I am calling upon all Sunshine Coast residents and business people to take a public stand against the construction of a casino in Maroochydore by signing my 'Say No to Council’s Casino' petition at www.andrewwallacemp.com. au/MyWorkforFisher/CasinoPetition-471/." Andrew confirmed that he is planning to hold community forums next year so that the community can have a say on what they want, rather than what Mayor Jamieson wants. Community discusses the use of As the letters pages over recent editions have shown, there are elements of the Maleny community who wish to see a greater emphasis placed on passive recreation and picnic spaces on the Maleny Community Precinct parklands. The informal group calling themselves ‘Park for the Precinct’ that is led by Jane Hyde are calling for Sunshine Coast Council to bring forward the plans to construct an inclusive community recreational park that has the amenities the community wants, consistent with the size, topography and unique environmental values of the site. They have also taken aim at the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club Inc (MDSRC) who hold a lease over a portion of the precinct and who are implementing the community agreed Maleny Community Precinct Master Plan for the site, which includes plans for recreational areas into the future, as funding comes available. According to the ‘Park for the Precinct’ website (www.communitymaleny.org), the group wants land leased by MDSRC, which is known as the Maleny Sports Park, to be reallocated to community parkland, rather than the agreed use as per the master plan. President of the MDSRC, Greg Williams, said: “MDSRC was allocated 5% of the 125ha site by Council to develop active sporting and recreational activities for the local district. “This modest area, Maleny Sports Park, includes some of the flattest outdoor sporting space in Maleny, a prerequisite for most sporting activities,
which is why it was set aside,” Greg said. “There are also several beautiful sites for picnics and other passive recreational activities flagged in the Precinct Master Plan, waiting to be developed. “These sites complement the extensive paths bordering the Obi Creek and throughout the large Unitywater lease. “We received a lease from Council in 2015 to assist in achieving MDSRC's objectives and in that short interval we have worked hard, and now the Maleny Bridge Club and the Maleny 5th Light Horse Troop are accommodated on the site. “The MDSRC Club House, home to the new Beersheba Museum, has been built, with those facilities now available for member clubs. “We’re currently working with several other organisations in preparations for the August 2018 National Cross Country event that will see 1,200 runners from around Australia and New Zealand on the Precinct over two days, with the running course said to be one of the best. This is a fantastic coup for Maleny, as the event is expected to attract 4,000 spectators. “Along with securing grants and upgrading facilities for member clubs such as Little Athletics and Netball at the High School, and organising the upcoming Aussie Day Expo, it has been a busy time. “We also recently received a grant from Council to update our business case in the light of these achievements.

open space inMaleny “This creates opportunities for us to consider additional sporting and recreational activities on Maleny Sports Park, including other equestrian activities, and the new aquatic facility. “During this review MDSRC will consult with its 52 affiliated member clubs which include the service clubs. MDSRC, Bridge, Golf, Friends of Pattemore House, Unitywater, 5th Light Horse, Barung, the Pente Poets, Green Hills and the Dark Sky Park Astronomers are all actively developing opportunities granted to them by Council through the Precinct Master Plan. “We encourage others who are interested in developing facilities to do likewise,” Greg said. More recently, the 'Park for the Precinct' group has updated the website to announce that after discussions with Cr Jenny McKay, Council has agreed to develop a site immediately next to the precinct as community open space, rather than for housing as identified in the Master Plan. But according to Cr McKay, this is not exactly the case. “The group have has been pushing for a dog park on the Precinct,” said Cr McKay. “I have advised them that once the Master Plan has been amended to include the new Barung lease site it will then give clarity for discussion for where the facility could go. “I have had our officers look at the area identified in the endorsed Master Plan for development to

Early indications reveal that this land is unlikely to return sufficient funds to the Precinct due to high development costs. “I have had our officers looking at other possible locations around the Council owned Precinct that would be a better return in a timely timeframe. This would be subject to a Council resolution. "If this were to be viable and supported by the community, stakeholders and council, then the current site marked ‘development’ could become available for community open space and possibly a suitable space for a dog park. “The Maleny Pool was also in the original plans for the Precinct and I remain committed to fighting for the budget to deliver this infrastructure also. “This is work in progress and it is very early days.”

in profile Aannsha and Barry Jones Aannsha and Barry to sail away By Sonia Clark How many of us dream of escaping the responsibility for bills, mortgage repayments and possessions to embrace a life of spontaneity, adventure and new experiences? While many people may entertain this idea, it takes real courage, belief and a freedom from fear to seek a different path. They say fortune favours the brave and we can’t help but get super excited for local Beerwah couple Aannsha and Barry Jones who are about live the dream as they embark on what can only be described as an incredible life adventure. In less than a week, having already farewelled their family home and most of their possessions, Aannsha and Barry will say goodbye to their long term friends, son Luke and the life they have known in Beerwah for the last 16 or so years to travel across the world to learn to sail, buy a yacht and follow their passions. The couple have decided to embrace their love of travel by becoming two “wet grey nomads” as they pursue sailing, scuba diving and sea/beach jewellery-making from a life aboard a yacht. Interestingly, having no previous sailing experience has not put a stopper on Aannsha and Barry’s decision and they have sold their house, given away or sold the bulk of their possessions and have freed themselves up to explore a life on the seas for many years. They have both lived very full and interesting lives; Aannsha is an artist who has spent many
years also working with Sue and Oskar Schlapa (Pasta d’Vine and Beerwah Fruit Market), while many locals will know Barry from his longrunning mobile computer business. Before this, Barry worked as a copy writer for a regional radio station and previously spent years as a DJ spinning the tunes in the Canary Islands. They first met in 1982 and over the following years travelled the world extensively, both as a couple and independently. For a period early in their relationship, they split and Aannsha moved to Australia in the 1990s. Eventually fate saw the couple rekindle their relationship and they married in 1998. While pregnant with their son Luke in 1997, they decided to settle down and bought their home in Beerwah in 2001. “We made a pact when Luke was born that we would stay in one place until he finished school and got a job. Now that he is 19 and has moved down to Brisbane we are able to contemplate travel again,” explained Barry. Once a traveller always a traveller, and both Aannsha and Barry feel they have “gypsy blood” and are deeply drawn to the opportunities of the world and further adventures. So, realising that “if you want to do something – you have to do it now” they have set themselves up with a website, Youtube channel, and blogs to document their journey. In the boating world a play on words is common, so they have called their website www.absea.
com.au – both for their names and travelling at sea and for the fact they will be both be learning from scratch how to sail! The plan is to fly to Spain later this month with everything they own in a couple of bags. Barry will “de-stress” for a few weeks while Aannsha will visit family in the UK and then they will regroup and drive to Gibraltar where they will undertake a three week sailing intensive to allow them to gain their day skipper licences. They will then catch up with an old DJ buddy of Barry’s who owns a yacht in Turkey which they will spend time on to learn the ropes. From here they will purchase a boat (ideally a 44 foot single mast) and sail the Mediterranean to gain a few years experience before tackling “blue water”. To even get to this point has been a fascinating journey and Aannsha and Barry have posted insightful (and entertaining) blogs and video footage documenting the journey to date – you can’t help but admire their spirit and feel inspired. Carols by Candlelight at Witta Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at Witta will open their doors to the community next Wednesday night, December 20, for a special Carols by Candlelight evening from 7pm. The event holds special significance as it will mark 125 years since the first service was held in the church back in 1892, which possibly makes it the oldest continuously serving congregation on the Sunshine Coast. In the late 1880s, the Queensland Government opened up land for agricultural selection in the Parish of Maleny. Among the first to apply were families from Brisbane’s Logan District where sizeable German communities had already been established. These settlers named their new home ‘Teutoburg’ and in the 1890s, they formed a congregation with the first service being held at Christmas 1892. Following this, a pastor from South Brisbane regularly made the arduous journey up the range, over its steep, dirt tracks to visit them.

The first church was built on land donated by Ludwig Bergann in 1893, and over time, a new church was built on the current site, which is still the one used today. It was dedicated on January 22, 1911. Early in 1916, the Teutoburg and the Maleny WWI Patriotic Committees held public meetings to discuss changing the German name ‘Teutoburg’ to a British or Australian one. While the Teutoburg meeting became heated, the result was a petition to the Queensland Government. It gave its assent and chose the name ‘Witta’ which the Land's Department Under-Secretary believed was an Aboriginal word for 'Cedar'. Over the years, various renovations of the building have been undertaken including, on one occasion, its painting by inmates of H. M.’s Prison, Woodford. In 1988, the congregation voted to be called ‘Good Shepherd Lutheran Church’ and in 1992, centenary celebrations were held. Good Shepherd invites all to attend Carols by Candlelight in the church grounds at 295 Witta Road, Witta at 7pm next Wednesday night. Please bring your own chair and candle/flashlight and join in the celebration of Christmas.

By Lea Parkes Local Ron Ticknel first started setting up the display 27 years ago when his daughter Sharon Schofield started work at the law firm, and Ron reckons this year’s display is the best yet. Ron, Sharon and Sharon’s daughter Kelly love Christmas and they really love getting into the festive spirit and sharing the joy that the lights bring the community. Ron said that it is great that Tove Easton, the owner of Easton Lawyers in Maleny for the past ten years, has been happy to share in funding the materials required for the beautiful display. Ron explained that the Santa in his sleigh has always been part of the display, and was originally positioned on the roof of the building, but sadly as Santa has aged and now that Ron is 70, neither has the energy to make the climb up.
On behalf of the community (and those a lot younger than Ron) I reckon he is doing a great job and would like to thank him and his support crew for bringing a smile to many faces when they see the display. By Sonia Clark After a long and successful business partnership Heidi and Anne of the Eclectic Dreams shop in Landsborough will be parting to create two separate businesses. Heidi will be continuing under the Eclectic Dreams business name, but moving into the freer lifestyle of a semi-permanent market stall at the Eumundi Markets and developing her online shop. Anne will continue on in Landsborough and call her business ‘Mist n Dreams’, offering Reiki, remedial and relaxing massage, therapy and classes. The shop will also continue to carry a range of giftware, crystals and a variety of locally handmade craft, arts and products. Heidi is excited to be entering a new chapter in her life and after 16 years of running her business in Landsborough she feels it is time for a change. With a third grandchild on the way, Heidi feels now is perfect to refocus on a work life balance that will allow her time to enjoy the people she loves. “It will be lovely to have the availability to spend time with my grandbabies and have more family time. I may even try to keep my garden alive and have more beach time!” laughs Heidi. Heidi has already set up her shop located in the Eumundi Square area of the markets which are open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 7.30am2pm. In some ways the market stall represents a ‘going back to her roots’ for Heidi as many years ago she originally started in business selling her designs at markets in Darwin. She is still spending a few days at the Landsborough shop with the final transition planned for late January. “Thank you so much to all our customers,” she says. “It has been a lovely journey so far, meeting people and watching their children grow up. It’s lovely that Anne will continue on at Landsborough and I’ll be online and up at Eumundi – so pop up and say hi!”

We are blessed locally with many beautiful birds, however one species, the aptlynamed Rainbow Bee-eater, is particularly dazzling. These migratory birds, with their chestnut crown, yellow throat and blue and green body, visit us during their summer breeding season, inhabiting open forests, shrub lands and even farmlands, as long as there are water sources close by. Look for them atop fence posts, dead trees and on electric wires, as they love these vantage points, from which they launch to catch their prey on the wing. They feed predominantly on bees and wasps, but also dragonflies, butterflies, locusts and hornets. Once they catch their prize, they land and bash the insect on their perch, to stun it and to remove any stings. Bee-eaters are ground nesters, usually digging tunnels in the sandy banks near water bodies. However, we have seen their tunnels in open flat grass areas. The tunnels are amazingly long and very narrow, leading to a wider nesting chamber. To create the burrow, the bird digs with its bill, and then pushes loose soil backwards with its feet while balancing on its bill. Distributed throughout mainland Australia, Bee-eaters are not considered as threatened, however research for the ‘State of Australia’s Birds 2015’ indicated a marked and consistent decline in numbers of these birds, and several other aerial insectivore species, between 1999 and 2013 in the East Coast region (between Gladstone and the NSW southern border). This reinforces the need to plant native species to attract insects for these beautiful birds. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Leanda Talks What makes us happy? “Happy New Year” that’s how the saying goes right? But what makes us happy? It’s such a simple straight forward question but we don’t always know the answer. I ask clients, “What do you want most in life?” Most people answer, “I just want to be happy.” Sounds simple, but what does happiness look like? And furthermore is the life you lead now bringing you closer to happiness? Many of us have adopted lifestyles that don’t support happiness. We lead lives that are rushed, stressed and too focused on things that are of material matter rather than meaningful purpose. Also our obsession with economic development is destroying the natural environment. Unhealthy lifestyles are making us physically and mentally unwell, they’re making us unhappier, not happier. It may be time to rethink our way of living because the solutions are to be doing things that support our wellbeing, finding opportunities to connect with others and supporting the environment we live in. The good news is that the things that make us happy are simple, a walk with a friend, a movie, travelling, watching a sunset, a good laugh and the act of kindness. Making positive, simple, healthy choices all promote wellbeing. What makes you happy? It’s an interesting topic because happiness is something we all desire but when we are in a

So how can we find it if we don’t know what we are looking for. When you see someone that has achieved positive health and lifestyle goals they are usually uplifted, glowing and smiling ... not down and low in moods. In my work with clients, happiness is a big part of health goals. We look at areas of our life, ranging from relationships to finances, personal style to having fun. We work through a series of practical exercises and answering questions that guides us down the path to finding our own simple solutions to everyday happiness, so that we can create a calmer, richer life that leads us into a healthy body and mind.
Ingredients: • 100g fresh pitted cherries or 100g of dried cherries, roughly chopped • 10 dates, pitted, roughly chopped • 1 cup almond meal • ¼ cup raw cacao powder • ¼ cup desiccated coconut + extra cup, to coat • 4 tbsp sunflower seeds • 2 tbsp chia seeds • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • Pinch of sea salt • 3 tbsp melted coconut oil Method Place the cherries, dates, almond meal, cacao powder, coconut, seeds, cinnamon and salt in the bowl of a food processor. Blend briefly until combined. Add coconut oil and pulse 2 to 3 times until well combined. If the mixture is too wet add some extra coconut or if too dry, add a little water. Roll the mixture into small balls and place on a tray lined with baking paper. Place the extra coconut onto a large plate and roll each ball in the coconut, ensuring each ball is evenly coated. Place in the fridge to firm up. Store balls in an airtight container and refrigerate.

Witta is the place to be this NYE If you are looking for somewhere in the Hinterland to head this New Year’s Eve then you may just want to follow Witta locals Matthew rd wa Ho ew Denise and Matth and Denise Howard who will be with the hundreds of others at the Witta Sports and Rec Club again this year. Denise said their whole family (including the grown up children) went along to the inaugural event last year, everyone had a great time, and they are looking forward to being able to do it all again. “One of the things I really loved about the evening was is that it brought the whole community together. There were older folk who brought along their playing cards, there was plenty of space for the young kids to get outside and run around, and it was great to see so many locals who you don’t always have the chance to catch up with during the year,” she said. “For Witta locals it is also great to be able to have an event you can head along to, have a drink and then safely walk home, and for those outside of the area there is also the option of camping at the grounds.”
Witta Sports and Recreation Club Secretary Lynda Burgess said: “This year we decided to follow on from the same format introduced at our inaugural event in 2016, which saw one lucky winner going home with an extra $10,000 in their pocket and then another 10 people who each won $100. “The feedback we received from many people who purchased tickets last year was that the odds of 1 in 400 chance of winning the $10,000 was pretty impressive, and they liked knowing that if they didn’t make it to the event on the night they were still able to win the prizes. “Those looking for a fun night out, also seemed really happy with the value for money they received for their $100 a ticket, which gets two people into the event, and includes dinner, 10 x $2.50 drink vouchers as well as live entertainment, and fireworks on the night.
“We are keen to cap the ticket sales at 400, with tickets being pre-purchased before the event (there will be no tickets at the gate). I would like to encourage those that are thinking of coming along to make sure they get their tickets while they are still available,” Lynda said. This year the Club has embraced technology and have the tickets available online, by going to their website www.wittarec.club – but for those who prefer the human touch, you can purchase them at Imelda's on Maple, and at Sommer’s Fuel Supplies at Witta, and down at the Sports Club between 4.30pm and 6.30pm on Wednesday afternoon. The Glasshouse District Little Athletics committee were dismayed last week to discover that someone has been riding horses on the Athletics fields at Skippy Park, causing considerable damage to the playing fields and very clearly marked running track. With the recent wet weather, the grounds are extremely soft and the hoof prints have created deep furrows and holes which make it extremely hazardous for the 120 children at our club to run and compete. We have tried our best to fill in the holes as we find them, but the rider keeps returning and more damage is being done and missing just one could easily result in serious injury. Could the person who is responsible please bear in mind that these fields are for the children of the area and their safety must come first. If anyone knows who is responsible for the damage, please ask them to stay off the fields or provide their details and we will report it to council. Glasshouse District Little Athletics Committee
Second notice to humanity
In the lead up to the recent State Government elections we were subject to the usual endless rounds of arguments, debates, promises and circling politicians looking for votes who dominate news services – as well as in letters columns. During this time one huge issue that I don’t believe got a decent airing was the serious state of the planet and our lifestyles hardly got touched on. I guess the closest we got was arguing about Adani and the coal mine and its subsequent impact on our environments; land and sea and reef. What just happened that went unnoticed in the recent helter-skelter of words? Over 15,000 scientists just issued a Second Notice to Humanity. Did we listen? Did you see it in politicians' speeches? No? The new warning was published in the journal BioScience. Reassessing warnings issued 25 years ago, the Second Notice to Humanity warns of "widespread misery and catastrophic biodiversity loss" unless business-as-usual is upended. By and large, humanity has done a shockingly horrible job of making progress. Key environmental threats that demanded urgent attention a quarter of a century ago are even worse now. Time is running out they said, to stop business as usual – as threats from rising greenhouse gases, toxic chemical and plastics contamination, deforestation, agricultural production, and the sixth mass extinction event underway indicate biodiversity species loss is pushing our home planet biosphere to the brink. We are on the precipice now. They said steps that could be taken are promoting plant-based diets; reducing wealth inequality; stopping conversions of forests and grasslands; government interventions to rein in biodiversity loss via poaching and illicit trade, and "massively adopting renewable energy sources" while phasing out fossil fuel subsidies. Re: Too many killer cats
Your correspondents (GC&M News November 29) who are troubled by roaming cats need to take action. My advice is to purchase a possum/cat trap and when the animal is caught, take it to the pound. With the Glasshouse Country Community Carols having moved to Turner Park in Beerwah this year, the team from Celebrate Glasshouse Country has teamed up with the Carols organisers to provide an easy access/seating area for those that need it. We will have chairs set up on the Community Hall verandah, as well as tables and chairs inside the hall, and we will serve tea, coffee and snacks. If you have been unable to join in the beautiful Carols events in the past because of access issues, please join us this year. There is also a drop off point outside the Hall, next to the Beerwah Library, which has wheelchair access. The Hall will suit people with disabilities, hearing issues and those wanting to avoid the trip hazards possible when negotiating families enjoying the lovely outdoor setting. Re: Parcel delivery nightmare
GC&M News December 6 contained a letter from Allyson Marshall quoting problems with parcel delivery and suggesting that anyone having similar problems lodge a complaint with Australia Post. A good suggestion, perhaps? However we have been having problems with Australia Post’s letter delivery over a period of at least 12 years. During this time I have contacted the local post shop, Australia Post itself, our then Federal MP several times and the Postal Ombudsman. Absolutely none of these approaches achieved anything and, in spite of having a file several inches thick, I have now given up. Mail from Melbourne took three weeks to reach Maleny; mail from the UK just never arrived, leading to emailed enquiries as to why we had not replied to letters; a special delivery envelope to the UK which cost us about $16 did not get to the addressee for three weeks and only then when the UK recipient contacted their local post office. And these are only some of the failures by our postal service. Some years ago I had a phone call from a person who claimed he was a senior Australia Post executive, and he told me that a recent survey had found that our postal service in this country was the third best in the world. As my husband and I have lived in several countries with atrocious postal services, I found this claim quite laughable. So by all means complain to Australia Post, but do not expect it to make any different to the ‘service’ you receive. Helen Evans Maleny

Re: Business in conflict with zoning
Readers may note an article in GC&M News, December 6 edition, about the council requiring a small business in Beerwah to apply for re-zoning. I happen to know that this is a very high tech, humble and innovative venture that has grown from grass roots and has cost the disabled but brilliant owner every cent that he has for decades. He has already had to negotiate countless hurdles from various government bodies and has persevered to date; but for him to consider re-locating at this stage of his life would I imagine, be inconceivable both financially and physically and his brilliance would be lost to us all. Perhaps instead of applying every 'letter' of the law to every aspect of this application, council might see the benefit in being helpful and somehow assisting him to stay on the site with minimal restrictions. My only knowledge of this operation is from a quick visit about a year ago, where the activities seemed little different to that of many medium size mechanised farms and allied operations, which of course have no need to 're-locate' as they grow. Whilst recognising that council has a duty to protect from genuine threats to safety, if this venture is to fail now, as a result of blind bureaucracy; it will be a tragedy and a lost opportunity to assist a truly unique and local concept that is on the cusp of fruition. I think many would agree that in preference to the negatives of a casino that the mayor is currently promoting for the Sunshine Coast, it would be a far more appropriate if the council's 'business arm' took the chance to be seen here in a positive light by demonstrating an interest and assisting this kind of local venture? Re: Rev. Kroeger's (Rev K) Church Column
As a lapsed Presbyterian I take umbrage to a couple of Rev Krogner's (Rev K) writings. I was taught by Scottish Presbyterian Ministers back in the 50s and 60s never never to use the word 'Hate' in any sentence, statement, etc. It is a word that has never been used in our home either by our children, grandchildren or ourselves. For a minister of religion to say that he “Hates all things Pre Christmas and finds no joy in it” astounds me. Sure we all get easily bothered by the hype pre Christmas but we can turn off. We can focus on what is important in our lives – life itself, family, friends, health – all those wonderful things. Rev K also states that we drink too much to put up with family members. How awful is that statement from a Christian man and minister? Isn't Christmas the season of goodwill (even towards difficult family members – and we've all got those)? He also states that it is the dread of what his culture has made of Christmas, the emphasis on material possessions, etc. But he then states - Christmas is about giving gifts. "We must learn how and when to give appropriate gifts to others as a reflection of God's goodness." So, when, how and what is an appropriate gift? Isn't a gift a material thing? Federal Member for Fisher Say No to Council’s Casino
I believe that the Sunshine Coast Council’s plan to change the character of our region by encouraging a casino to be built at their Maroochydore CBD development is emerging as one of the biggest threats to the future of our local community. A casino on the Coast would add to the cost of living pressures on many of our hard-working families, increase crime and anti-social behaviour, and drive up drug and alcohol abuse. This plan risks driving more family breakdowns, and increasing rates of mental and physical ill-health throughout the region. Family life is difficult enough in modern times. We do not need to compound those difficulties by establishing more mechanisms of misery. I have spoken to many local people about this around our community and the overwhelming feedback I have received tells me that Sunshine Coast residents do not want a casino here. We are not the Gold Coast, nor should we want to be. I am calling upon all Sunshine Coast residents and business people to take a public stand against the construction of a casino in Maroochydore by signing my “Say No to Council’s Casino” petition at www.andrewwallacemp.com.au/ MyWorkforFisher/CasinoPetition-471/.
Improved mobile phone coverage in the Hinterland
Many people have complained to my office about the lack of mobile phone reception in parts of the Hinterland. I have also attended a number of community events and worked closely on this with local advocates like Ursula Starkovsky from the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce. I was delighted to announce this month at the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed that the Federal Government has allocated funding for new mobile black spot towers at Beerwah and Glass House Mountains, along with another not far from Peachester. This is great news for these local communities. The tenders will be in by the end of December, and a decision will be made on exactly where the towers will be built and which company will build them in the early part of 2018. These new towers will substantially improve mobile coverage in the Hinterland by the end of next year.
NBN Forum in Landsborough
This month I hosted a community NBN forum at the Landsborough Memorial Hall. We had more than 80 people turn out at what was a very valuable session. Representatives of NBN and Telstra answered a lot of questions from local residents and we were able to address many people’s issues. I want to thank everyone who came along to provide their feedback and to find out more. The roll out of the NBN is a very substantial and important change for all of us and it is imperative that you make sure that you are fully informed, especially if you rely on your landline for emergency or medical services. I also want to take this opportunity to say it’s been an honour to be again elected the Member for Glass House. I am proud of the achievements we have accomplished together over the last eight and a half years. I want to finish the job we have started and I will continue to work hard to get exactly what we need for our communities and families. I want to assure Glass House constituents that I will continue to fight for the commitments that I and the LNP made for our communities during the election campaign: commitments like the rail duplication from Beerburrum to Landsborough, an Indoor Aquatic Centre for Maleny, a long term lease for the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre, flashing school zone safety lights at Peachester and Glass House Mountains State Schools, upgrades to the Conondale Swimming Pool and Glass House Mountains State School, Montville State School, Woodford P10 State School and Mooloolah State School and maintenance funding for the CCTV cameras operated by the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce - to name but a few. I encourage constituents to keep raising issues with me that are important to them and their families so together we can continue to build a better Glass House. Having attended a number of graduation ceremonies and school presentations over recent weeks, I’d love to take this opportunity to wish our Sunshine Coast students the very best of luck as they finish their high school studies and enjoy a well-deserved break.
Students tackle environmental challenges
I was honoured to join Professor Atsuhiro Woshaknak – former UN Secretariat for Biodiversity and Biodiversity Secretariat for the Minister for Environment of Japan – at a recent workshop hosted at Mary Cairncross Rainforest Discovery Centre. The workshop saw students from Japan join local students from Maleny State High School to examine critical environmental challenges including the health of coral reefs, management of feral animals and threats to biodiversity such as the introduction of pest species like the cane toad. It was an incredibly positive experience for students to learn from each other cross culturally, and work together to tackle some of our shared environmental challenges.
Security Cameras
Like many of our community I have expressed an interest in a security camera program within our Hinterland towns. Council’s camera network assists the Queensland Police with the identification and prosecution of offenders across the region. I will continue to work with council staff, the Queensland Police Service and local communities to identify locations in the Hinterland that may be suitable for such technology.
School holiday fun
There are workshops, arts classes and exhibitions to keep the whole family entertained for the holidays. Little kids and big kids alike will have plenty of opportunities to explore our Sunshine Coast’s natural environment, get in touch with their creative side and learn from incredible artists these school holidays. Children’s workshop series Wing It! will bring together local and visiting artists to set children’s imaginations soaring from December 12 to January 18.
Puppies, kittens and pets are gifts for life
If you’re considering a cute and cuddly present for the family this Christmas, I’d encourage everyone to visit our amazing team at the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge and consider adopting a furry friend. These precious pups, dogs, kittens and cats can make a wonderful addition to your family, but if being given as a gift please ensure the lucky recipient is looking for a gift that lasts a lifetime.

Experience the art of surrealism
Visit Caloundra Regional Gallery to explore the latest touring exhibition from Heide Museum of Modern Art, one of Australia’s leading art museums, featuring works by contemporary Australian artist Michelle Nikou. In the ‘a e i o u’ exhibition, the Adelaide-based artist draws on surrealism in a reflective and productive way to transform mundane domestic objects and materials into sculptures of humour and marvel. Her work intentionally blurs and extends the boundaries between fine art and craft and often invests unremarkable or overlooked facets of daily existence with new and unexpected significance. Nikou’s practice is also characterised by a deep engagement with language and she forges connections between art and literature that invoke suburban life, family interactions and food. Certain Women in Maleny
If you're just a little tired of media stories of the rich and powerful, perhaps this 2016 drama from the USA being offered by the Maleny Film Society this Saturday, December 16, might be more to your taste. ‘Certain Women’ depicts how the lives of four 'ordinary' women intersect, portraying the daily decision-making, hopes, dreams and struggles that characterise most people's lives. The eponymous women are subtly played by Kristen Stewart (Cafe Society), Michelle Williams (Marilyn), Laura Dern (Blue Velvet) and Lily Gladstone (Walking Out). Based on short stories by Maile Meloy and impressively directed by Kelly Reichardt – whose film ‘Night Moves’ won Best Film at the 2016 London Film Festival – this work has been described by Wendy Ide of ‘The Guardian’ as “a minor miracle”. The dramatic Montana landscape, with its vast plains, big skies and distant Rocky Mountains contrasts starkly with the women's modest ambitions. It is rated M and runs for 109 minutes. A sea of colour this Christmas
Around 40 local community groups will be spreading some cheer as well as creating a sea of colourful Christmas Trees this year as part of the annual Christmas Tree Festival at the Maleny Uniting Church. While the traditional Christmas colours of red and green are bound to appear, you can be sure of some surprises. The colourful event will take place from this Saturday, December 16, until Christmas Eve on Sunday December 24. Children will be well catered for. The trees will captivate them, and there will be hands-on activities, including the Kids Play Zone, to keep them busy. While there are no live animals, there are definitely some realistic and appealing replicas. All are invited to come along and view the amazing display of trees. Fancy a letter from Santa?
Over the last few weeks, local property consultant Alex Garden has been busy liaising with ‘Santa’ to organise personalised letters ‘from Santa’ to be sent out to children (and the young at heart). Inspired by Alex’s own young son who absolutely adores Santa, the local Beerwah Ray White consultant thought it’d be a lovely service to offer free ‘letters from Santa’ to the community. The idea has taken off and the local response has been great ... so great that Alex has had to change his plans and ask locals to come into the Ray White office for Santa to hand the letter to the children, rather than the original plan of hand delivering them to their houses. The Year Six students at Beerburrum State School recently showcased the skills they have learned during their Stephanie Alexander kitchen classes. Each student invited one special person as judge for a lunch menu which included: Vegetable Quiche, Kale and Roast Pumpkin Salad with Honey Mustard Dressing and a Stephanie Alexander favourite, Beetroot and Chocolate Muffins. The reviews of our restaurant were very pleasing and many parents are now eager to hand over cooking duties at home. Students and their visitors were very proud to celebrate our new kitchen sign donated by the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed.
In the coming weeks we hope to catch up with the many locals who have already discovered The Orangery since we opened late last year, and for those of you who haven’t had the chance to drop in, why not take advantage of the holidays and pop in and see us for breakfast or lunch each day or dinner on Friday and Saturday? The only day we will be closed is Christmas Day. We also have lots of lovely ideas planned for 2018. One that we are really excited about will be our Little Girls’ High Tea Birthday Parties, which we imagine will be popular with both the little girls and their mummies.

Game On is an invitation to celebrate our Aussie sporting culture, team mateship and the countries who will be visiting Australia to participate in the Commonwealth Games. Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said she was very passionate about the annual State Library of Queensland Summer Reading Club program as it encouraged a continued love of reading and ongoing multi-literacy skills development among children and young people during the summer holidays. “Last year more than 55,000 children and young people across Australia participated in the Summer Reading Club,” Cr McKay said. “My grandchildren love this program which kicked off on December 1. “I know they will be reading as many books as possible to be in the running to win some great prize packs.” Children just need to read five items of their choice over the summer holidays – this includes books, magazines, comics and eBooks. They then complete the reading log and hand it in to their local Sunshine Coast library by 5pm Monday, January 15, 2018 – it’s that easy! There are four prize packs up for grabs: • Book prize pack - a voucher to a local bookstore and a bundle of awesome books.
• Game On prize pack - a toy store voucher to embrace your inner champion. • Lego prize pack - a stack of bricks and things to help you become a master builder. • Superhero prize pack - Is it a bird? Maleny's bDifferent Dance Academy will host another of its fun school holiday workshops this Thursday, December 14, at their studio at 23 Coral Street, Maleny. These workshops will feature five different dance styles to try, including tap and musical theatre, contemporary, break and hip hop, jazz, a choreography focus session plus a special ballet repertoire workshop with specialist RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) ballet teacher, Miss Dawn. Juniors (6 to 11 years) are 9am to 1pm and seniors (12 to 17 years) are 11am to 3pm – at $45 per student for four hours of high-quality dance tuition. A Kinder Christmas Workshop (3 to 5 years) will also run from 10-11am and is $15. Contributed by Karen Shaw, Secretary - Maleny Commerce Hundreds of locals came out for the Maleny Christmas Festival and Street Carnival on Friday night. Despite the showers of rain, the community enjoyed a night of great food, stalls, music and fun. Watching our talented local dance groups, in particular the little tots, dancing joyfully in the rain made the night an absolute highlight! The Unusual Suspects played under the eaves of the IGA and the crowd danced in puddles. The event could not have been possible without the financial contribution of Maleny Commerce and the support of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Grants Program and Member for Glasshouse Andrew Powell’s Local Heroes Grants. We also received generous support from Maleny Community Centre for free venue hire. Both Glasshouse Country & Maleny News and the Hinterland Times got behind the event and provided promotion for it. Contributed by Sally Joyce with excerpts from Matt Bateman Vine weeds and in particular Cat’s Claw Creeper and Madeira vine are a major environmental and economic threat particularly to our waterways and the creatures that live within its habitat. Peachester State School Enviro Club members recently began an ongoing partnership with Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group (LBCCG) and Mooloolah River Landcare (MRL) to participate in a program of using bugs to biologically reduce infestations of these vines in the Stanley River catchment. The children released their first batch of Jewel Beetles onto some Cat’s Claw vine found at the school. When school resumes they will begin to breed the bugs in portable foam boxes for use at the school and for the broader school community. All materials will be supplied by LBCCG and MRL. The key is finding all the infestations, recording them accurately and then creating a prioritised strategy. This is where landholders, local knowledge and the grapevine are invaluable in locating the infestations. Apart from producing bugs for release, breeding of the bio control agents is a great way to introduce people, particularly children, to broader environmental issues such as weeds, and also gives a great hands-on lesson in biology. Over the last five years a similar program has been running in the Upper Mary River Catchment. It has been highly successful and LBCCG is managing over 300 sites. A similar program is now up and running in the Mooloolah Catchment. Thanks to Matt Bateman from LBCCG for inviting Peachester State School to be a part of this progam. The students finished the day with a celebratory end of year lunch provided to say thanks to the Enviro Club kids for all their efforts in 2017. They each took home one of their own propagated Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vines to plant in their own gardens. Students choose to attend Enviro Club during their lunch breaks every Wednesday and Friday. Many thanks to Mrs Dorothy Robb for running this program and Judith Hain for volunteering to help out each week.

It’s the bright yellow flowers of the vigorous weed, Cat's Claw Creeper, which is threatening to overrun our gardens and waterways smothering vegetation large and small without hesitation. Our precious waterways need your help to locate and destroy this beast and there is a non-human army of insects in Glenview that’s mobilising to take on this aggressive South American invader. Mooloolah River Landcare, with the assistance of Sunshine Coast Council are breeding an army of insects that love to eat this creepy vine and have sourced funding for strategic removal by their human counterparts. Contributed by Marie Butts Our last outing for the year was to the Evergreen Taoist Temple at Deagon. A small group of us went by bus and arrived at the serene grounds and buildings of the Buddhist property to be met by our guide Rick. It was a most interesting and informative tour where we learned a fraction of the Chinese philosophy and religion. This was followed up with a tasty lunch at the Sandgate RSL. Our bus driver then drove us back home via Shorncliffe and Brighton. It was a most enjoyable day. Our next meeting for Probus will be at the Community Hall Beerwah on Wednesday January 10. At this time of year we celebrate the birth of the Christ child. Jesus too changed the lives of his parents. Jesus’ arrival meant they became a family. Share some Christmas spirit One of the main priorities of Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) is to support community members who find themselves in a crisis situation. This is the Emergency Relief Program. MNC assists vulnerable families and individuals of our local community in a variety of ways. An MNC spokesperson said: “For the food relief program we do not get any government assistance – we are reliant solely on the generosity of the community. “So far this year we have raised approximately $8,900 but we still hope to reach our target of $20,000. People in difficulty need fuel vouchers, stoves if they're sleeping rough and sometimes help with emergency payments such as power bills, prescriptions and food. “Our emergency food program costs about $1,000 per month. The average food parcel costs $30 depending on the number of people in the family. We also set aside a budget of $1,000 per year for IGA vouchers for people with specific food allergies – so far we have accrued $600 this financial year towards this. “If you or your organisation can assist please contact us. Sport Beerwah Golf Club
Sprints and splashing Contributed by Sally Joyce The Peachester State School sporting year ended with a splash with their swimming carnival on December 5. We had a great show of excellent competitive swimming, sportsmanship and most of all fun. Our older students and some past students helped swim in the lanes to reassure young swimmers and many cheers were made for the enormous courage shown in making it to the other end of the pool by some of our newest swimmers. Mr Duffy’s Parents and Teachers team managed to out-swim the Year 6 Relay Team this year. The day ended with an ‘all school’ noodle horse race where each entire team managed to stay on the one pool noodle. The day was a great show of our ‘small school spirit’. It was a fitting last day on staff for our sports
teacher Mr John McKie. We wish him all the best in his new school.

In the Ladies graded and drawn triples final, Chris Dougan, Lyn Griffiths and Rae Farrell def Sue O’Hagan, Jenny Hobson and Chris Freshwater 29-20. Thursday December 7: Social, winners of the day were Michael Frost and Ross Siegle with 2 wins + 32 margin. Runners up with + 18 margin in the second game were Kerry Molloy and Simon Richter and the lucky draw went to
Jo Siegle and Barry Kirk. The Premier 7s sides have been selected and the first round is Saturday January 6. Both are away games for Division 3 and 4. We will be having a practice day before the green closes on Saturday December 16 at 12.30pm for all Premier 7s and Hinterland Players, including ladies. So, hope to see many of you there! The club has designed a new club jacket which will be great for the cooler months. The cost will be $110 each and you can view a photo at the office where you put your name down for games. There is a sheet there to place your orders along with the size you’re after, as we need an idea by January 25 so the jackets are here before winter – they look unreal!
Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker There was no play recorded on the lawns last week due to the renovations, but the rain would have been a deterrent anyway. A 90-year-old mother in law of one of the players once commented that watching a game was just a “little less exciting than watching grass grow”. Obviously a non-player herself, she would have been able to observe excitingly rapid grass growth on the lawns in the present wet, humid conditions. An inspection of the lawn on Tuesday December 5 dashed hopes of play for the next week at least.
It now seems likely we’ll be back on the lawn just before Christmas. All players are urged to keep a weather eye out for the Croquet Queensland calendar of events for 2018 which will be published soon. This gives dates for all tournaments in Queensland next year. Club play days are, in summer, Thursday and Sunday at 2 for 2.30 pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. Contributed by Roger Bonhomme Men and medley results Following the recent December monthly medal competition, John Baggaley won the Club's 2016-17 Medal of Medallists Award. ‘Bags’, as he is known, is a cheerful C grader who tries his hardest on every shot but doesn't get too upset if it doesn't come off. We should all take a leaf out of his book. Congratulations! After two weeks of cancelled mid-week competitions, we finally played a single stroke event last Wednesday. The recent rain made the going pretty tough with wet patches and no run on the heavy fairways. Graham Rimmer (hcp 6), who's having a good run over the past six months, took out A grade (and NTP) with nett 70. John Runge (8) finished second a stroke behind. In B grade Justin Neubecker (18) won with a 69. Frequent placegetter Tony Richards (18) came second on 70. In C grade Greg Lamey (24) had the round of the day with a lovely 67, and John McCoomb (20) finished second on 71. NTP: 2 - Graham Rimmer, 5 - Geoff Carson, 16 - Wayne Maw, 18 - Moss Thistlewaite. During the week the club's resident curlew hatched its egg. The curlew had its own fenced nesting area alongside the sixth. Mother and chick are doing well. On Saturday, members played for trophies presented by our patrons, the Elks family. Andrew Betts (4) / Trevor Sanderson (22) won the two ball best ball Stableford competition with a fine 50 points. Steve Briggs (21) / Chris Russell (13) finished two points behind. Unfortunately the NTP results disappeared before I could copy them. In the mixed 2BBB event, husband and wife team of Rod (27) / Joey (17) Eccles won narrowly with 42 points from Glenn Humphreys (12) of Bribie Island and his partner Di Flint (22) on 41. The brother and sister pairing of Lindsay Webb (22) and Brenda Briese (23) and Wayne (25) and Helen (14) Lewis lost the countback for second place. As grounds staff prepared the greens for members starved of bowls because of the summer wet, much delight came to all member who turned up to have a game before many set off on the travels to family and friends for Christmas. Tuesday Triples: Winners were Joe Walters, Don Ginns and Sandra Kapetanic. There were no lucky jackpot winners so we look forward to a big potential win in the New Year when our Tuesday bowls resumes in February after a summer break. Thanks to all who have supported these games and assisted in any way to help John and Sandra Kapetanic in organising these for the club and our members, your efforts are much appreciated. Welcome back Wednesday! After a number of washouts we had some fabulous fun and games to conclude the 2017 Barefoot season. What a great year of bowls, new friendships and much fun – and all are looking forward to the new season round up early in January, 2018. Thanks to all who have had a bowl, beer and barbecue on Wednesdays at the friendliest club on the Range – your support has helped us to provide so much enjoyment for many in our community. You have all become very special to so many fellow bare-footers with our regular games and your participation. See you all in 2018. We will welcome in 2018 with a little muster on Wednesday January 3. Drop in and join us, we will get you a game and make up teams during January for the 2018 Autumn competition. These interactions are obviously positive as the club has maintained a very positive culture for 80 years thanks to members past and present. Contributed by Brenda Briese Our competition year has drawn to a close. Thursday, December 7 we had our break-up day. It's always a barrel of laughs and we certainly don't take the ‘golf’ seriously! The theme for the day was teams of four players, dressing as something beginning with ‘F’. Some teams went to a lot of trouble and looked fabulous. And our resident Professionals had a lot of mischief planned for us, with every hole having some very ‘challenging’ components; for example, throwing the ball off the tee, hitting with a left handed club if you were right handed and vice versa, putting with a putter about 40cms long and many others which was very funny. We played an Irish four ball and the winners were one of the ‘French Maids’ teams of Sharon Phillips, Lea Doyle, Bridget John and Teresa Keast. Runners-up were Gail Hancock, Denise Kirkby, Joan Swyny and Barb Drury and 2nd runners-up were Karen Kemp, Lea Garner, Jo Eccles and Margaret Zonca, dressed as a ‘Family’. Golf was followed by various annual awards. Congratulations to all the winners. We then enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by the staff of the club. Then the fun began and lots of dancing and laughter. It's been a very enjoyable year and we certainly look forward to next year with lots of enthusiasm. I'd like to wish everyone who reads this column a very merry and safe festive season and hope to see you around the traps in 2018.
