scarecrow season is definitely upon us, over the past few weeks I have spotted three or four scary (and not so scary) scarecrows popping up near our office in Glass House Mountains. But I have to say my favourite so far is the ‘more than a little spooky lady scarecrow’ outside of Bankfoot House. She even has a very unappealing rat sitting on her shoulder! Local Rural Fire Brigades are reminding locals and visitors alike to switch their minds back into being bushfire aware. Their advice is … be careful, be prepared and be vigilant now that the fire season is upon us. Gavin Stewart, Volunteer Community Educator (VCE) from the Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade is reminding people that their survival during a bushfire is highly dependent on how well-prepared they are before the event. “The more people who are aware of the ‘Prepare. Act.Survive' (Bushfire Survival) program the better,” he said. “Too many residents are complacent when it comes to having a Bushfire Survival Plan. On many occasions I have heard the words ‘we live in the estate so it won't happen to us.’ WRONG! “This region is surrounded by bush in one direction or the other, and the greatest threat to any home is what we call an ‘ember attack’, which can travel for several kilometres. “These embers can lodge in or on combustible material around the house causing the house to catch fire. So no matter whether you live on acreage or 'in town', you must have a Bushfire Survival Plan,” Gavin emphasised. Halls Creek or Beerwah East … GCNews has committed to bringing you informed and relevant commentary to the Halls Creek and Beerwah East urban development proposal
discussion. Over the coming weeks, a number of interested parties who have a particular concern in the debate will be presenting their points of view.
... from the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce point of view by Bob McLean, President, GCCofC After considering the debate of the past months since the release of the 2014 Sunshine Planning Scheme and listening to the point of view of many people from Sunshine Coast East of the Bruce Highway, Glasshouse Country and those contributing to the GCNews, I am confident to deliver a point of view from the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce. As I expressed at the community forum in Caloundra, the two IGA’s must remain and examined as one and to include the Glasshouse Country footprint. The community west of the Bruce Highway has infrastructure not available to the east. This community has a commuter rail system and established well serviced communities. These communities have been choked down by the existing SEQ plan and now the 2014 Sunshine Coast Plan. This IGA debate will now provide a new focus on the shortcomings of both these planning instruments. The ability to manage assets will maximise the use of the existing infrastructure.
Although Halls Creek is freehold rural land, it does not mean the complete area should be under roof and sealed roads. Caloundra South is an approved development which still has to be refined. We have a new $80 million interchange at Bells Creek Road with a direct link to Beerwah. I read in GCNews on August 6 about Mal Brough’s comments to examine the construction of the connection between Bells Creek Road and Kawana Way. How smart is this? This is the type of leadership we require. This supports the Chamber’s view that this new infrastructure bring back together the communities of postcode 4519. The Chamber believes that if the two IGA’s are linked with the increased patronage of the rail network, as well as the re-zoning of infill development, it will promote strong sustainable communities. As a farmer of many years, I took exception to the comment of Stockland, that Halls Creek is degraded grazing land. In truth this has been engineered by not remediating this previous timber plantation.
If this land had been reforested, a mature harvestable crop would have been more beneficial than grazing cattle on this poor quality coastal land. This just promoted their argument for the site to be land suited for only housing development. There are compromises if the big picture is viewed considering all of the options. Issues arise when you examine the contour of the Halls Creek site, which I was able to do on a site tour, and the floodable area of Caloundra South from the overlay maps. There are sensible land exchange options from Beerwah East with Halls Creek, as well as potential infill development within a kilometre of Unitywater assets and less than one kilometre from rail stations. This alternative will allow for no loss of plantation asset, in fact an increase; promote economic development within the Beerwah East IGA for a mix of industrial and residential developments for residents to live and work within the local community. Yes, Halls Creek can be removed as an IGA and then does it sit as low quality grazing land or should a percentage go back to being a sustainable productive forest? The northern boundary of the inter-urban break must be identified now. We may be looking at land use 30 years out, but is this the best option for Glasshouse Country? The debate for now is about balance and good sustainable outcomes. We can’t afford to have a closed mind on this issue and look at the big picture.
In a few days local State members Andrew Powell and Mark McArdle will be holding the first of a series of ‘information booths’ in the foyer of the Beerwah library, they will include displays of large maps of both sites, FAQ handouts and a survey calling on residents to have their say. Should we be climbing the mountains? On the back of the announcement by the State Government that they will be spending part of a $750,000 project towards opening the climbing trails to the top of Mt Tibrogargan and Mt Beerwah, comes another rescue of a ‘climber’ at Mt Beerwah. Last week, members of the Glass House Mountains SES were involved in the rescue of a woman who became trapped attempting to climb the closed track up Mt Beerwah. The Brisbane woman eventually had to be rescued by helicopter, as her position was too perilous for the SES specialist team to reach. SES Group Leader, Robert Barry is frustrated with people continually ignoring signage telling them that the trails are closed on both mountains. “The tracks are closed for good reasons,” said Robert. “The slopes contain treacherously loose rocks and boulders which make climbing in these areas a very dangerous and risky activity. “And the irresponsible actions of a few put our SES members in grave and unnecessary danger when we have to then attempt rescues,” said Robert. Nat Smith, Senior Ranger with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) said recently on an ABC Sunshine Coast radio interview that there are numerous warning signs that walkers have to pass telling them that the climbs are closed, and Rangers have the power to issue $455.00 fines for people who flout the signs.

“We didn't close it to be fun police,” he said. “We closed it because we as an agency were genuinely very worried that someone would be killed on it.” Considering the peaks are so unstable and dangerous, some may question whether they should be open for the general public to climb at all? According to the Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing, they can address any safety concerns. “Mt Beerwah and Mt Tibrogargan summit routes were closed due to safety concerns, and the intention has always been to reopen them once those risks have been addressed,” said a departmental spokesperson. “Work on the summit tracks is about to begin very soon. “The highest priority for the project is re-opening the summit access route on Mt Tibrogargan. Work is underway to progress this stage as soon as possible.” When asked if the views of the recognised traditional owners had been sought in the decision to reopen the tracks, the Department spokesperson made it clear they had. “Mt Beerwah is within the Native Title Determination Area held by the Jinibara People. The Kabi Kabi First Nation has an interest over a claim area that includes Mt Tibrogargan. “The Department is aware of the varying views of the Traditional Owners regarding climbing the peaks. “Discussions will be held with Traditional Owner groups in the very near future,” they said.
USC Design student wins national award
University of the Sunshine Coast Design student Jaclyn Crane has won a highly competitive national student design award with her striking entry Remember Fukushima. The competition brief was to design a cover for an imaginary issue of the esteemed design industry publication, DG Magazine, with the theme ‘Famous Designers’. Jaclyn chose to emulate the style of Shepard Fairey, the American artist best known for his pop art depiction of US President Barack Obama in the now famous Hope poster. Jaclyn’s original artwork was inspired by a photograph of a person protesting the Fukushima disaster. The judges’ citation for Jaclyn’s design read: ‘A compelling composition that reflects the style of Shepard Fairey but with a significant contribution in content and message from the designer. It looks confident, complete and dares us to look inside. Excellent work.’ Jaclyn is a Beerwah State High School graduate and is in her third year of a Bachelor of Design and Communication, majoring in graphic design. She said it was thrilling to win the award. “It’s a great feeling to have my work recognised and awarded, especially since the design is the kind of work I hope to do in the future – book covers, CDs and posters,” she said.

Beerwah’s water speed demon Beerwah junior speedboat racer, Lachlan ‘Locky’ Hammond, has come away from the latest round of the Australian Formula Powerboat Grand Prix championships with an overall third place in Australia in the Formula Futures (J3) division. Locky (16) has been racing powerboats for only two years, after a mate, Dean McLaughlin introduced him to the sport. “It wasn’t long until I was hooked and then had my own boat,” he said. The boats are smaller 15hp versions of the larger racing boats, but can still pack a punch. Locky’s boat is called the ‘Beerwah Bullet’, and is the same boat he started with two years ago. “They are only 3.2m long, but can reach speeds of over 70km/hr. “Racing them is a real adrenaline rush, which is what I love about power boat racing. “I’ve rolled this one three times, but haven’t had a serious injury, mainly due to all the safety equipment we use,” said Locky. Locky’s dad Adrian – well-known owner of Beerwah Discount Tyres and Batteries – is also a keen powerboat devotee. Adrian actually started in powerboats after Locky did, and he competes in the 25hp class. “I’m really proud of Locky’s dedication and the professional way he handles himself at competitions,” said Adrian. “His race results are a reflection of the work he puts in behind the scenes. And now that he’ll be stepping up into the class I race in,

The program promotes secure attachment between mother and baby by providing new mothers with information, practical experience and opportunities to celebrate the experience of motherhood. Glasshouse Country View Club ‘Twinnies to the rescue’ On Wednesday, August 6, about 19 of our ladies visited the ‘Twinnies Seabird Rescue Complex’ in Landsborough. They were greeted with a lovely hot cuppa for morning tea before getting a tour of the premises.
The tour included a visit to the hospital where injured birds are treated, then another area for recuperation, and a third area for birds ready for release back to the wild. From all accounts the ladies were very impressed with how clean and well-kept the areas were and how organised and
dedicated the Twinnies and their volunteers are in offering this service in the treatment of injured birds. Volunteers are always needed to keep this complex open, so if you wish to donate your time I am sure it would be much appreciated. Towels and rags are always needed in caring for the birds. Don’t forget the Area QB Picnic being held @ Cotton Tree Esplanade War Memorial Area from 10.00am on Tuesday, August 19. Please bring a plate and drinks. Meet at the Beerwah Library by 9.00am if you wish to car pool. This is also Seniors Week and View Club Australia will be recognising all members who are contributing and volunteering to help our children to a better education. A test of strength at Charity Sports Day
At the Beerwah Charity Sports day on Saturday, August 23 a number of very strong men and women will compete in a variety of events to claim the title of Strongman and Strongwoman of Charity Sports. Several of the events will include lifting heavy weights (130kg) and running a course with them, as well as pulling a heavy truck (3-4 tonnes) at least 20 metres. The competition will run from approximately 10.00am until after the grand parade, so come down to the Sportsground and be amazed at the weights these competitors can lift. The Beerwah CWA Ladies are hosting a 'Stitch 'n Bitch' at the Beerwah Hotel on Monday, August 18 from 11.00am to 2.00pm. Originally groups of women in the 1940's would join to knit and talk in organised ‘Stitch and Bitch’ clubs. Nowadays the groups, mainly women, meet to knit, stitch and talk while sharing their love of knitting and crocheting. With over 1,460 registered Stitch ‘n Bitch groups in 289 cities worldwide, this social knitting movement has been embraced by the active Beerwah CWA Branch ladies. On the morning there will be 'Stitchettes' on hand to show you a basic stitch or two. All wool and needles will be provided, however donations of wool, knitting needles and crochet hooks would be gratefully received. Work will mainly focus on crocheting basic flowers to contribute to the 5000 poppies project being run through the Beerwah Library.
Save the Iconic Forest In March last year, the ‘Save the Iconic Forest at the North End of Steve Irwin Way’ group held a community forum in Jowarra park (opposite the Mooloolah Cemetery) on Steve Irwin Way at Glenview. The forum highlighted the plight of the native forest and dependent wildlife under threat from clearing for a new highway interchange. Much has happened since, and the group have organised another get-together to update people on the current state of play. Club Glass House celebrates three successful years since the opening of their dining room Club Manager Sharon Bochow says that in the three and a half years since the community club moved its entire business over to Glass House that she has been “continually astounded by the wonderful community atmosphere that exists in the club.” “The members are amazing and we thank them for their fantastic continuing support,” she said. The club is very much a family orientated community club, bringing back fond memories of the original bowls club which once was the social hub of the town. As Sharon says, “you can feel that friendly atmosphere as soon as you walk into the building.” This month marks the three year anniversary of the opening of the dining room and cook Aroha Mate, fondly known as MJ, has kicked off the celebrations this month with an exciting new menu. MJ took on the position of head cook in March and has continued to tantalise the taste buds of the growing number of diners ever since. The new menu still has a lot of the old favorites, including the popular specially seasoned calamari and a new seafood basket which far surpasses
the old one. MJ is very aware of special dietary needs and is happy to accommodate. She has tried to include something for everyone, including gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian options. The library holds information and databases, including licensed access to Ancestory.com to assist you chart your family history and they extend an invitation to learn more about your family throughout August. It was with great success that the Ngungun Tri Club ran its first open duathlon and 5km fun run as part of their 2014 Duathlon Series. With a small but eager contingent, the adults this year had a chance to have a winter hit out in what is usually the off season in terms of triathlon, as well as the kids. A great mid season training opportunity in a fun and non-competitive environment with the chance to better their time in the next race. A gorgeous winter’s day and a fantastic family atmosphere all contributed to an excellent morning. It was pleasing to see a number of new faces with the children’s races growing steadily. As always the kids had heaps of fun. With just over one week to go until our second and final Duathlon, now is the time to give it a go! All juniors who enter go in the draw to win a fantastic Fuji race bike donated by our supporter Bicycle Centre Caloundra. Our next Duathlon takes place on August 17, at Skippy Park in Landsborough. Race registration opens at 7.45am. First race starts approximately 8.30am. This is a fantastic and fun event for all ages, young and old and we would welcome anyone who is interested to come along and give it a go.

Duplication of rail line
At the recent meeting in Caloundra to discuss Halls Creek / Beerwah East, Andrew Powell stated that the duplication of the Beerburrum to Landsborough railway line is urgent and that his expectation was that this duplication would be delivered ahead of the current program. LACA Inc supports this statement - we believe the duplication is definitely urgent as it was identified as urgent in 1998. What a wonderful surprise I had last Saturday whilst driving slowly through Beerwah. I saw an old friend in Peachester Road, with her new shop banners flying and flapping in the wind. We have a new Barber shop in Beerwah - little Julie is the owner / manager of her own barber shop. I couldn't wait, had a haircut there and then and my wife was so happy to see that in her opinion, my hair has been cut in a decent manner once again. Over to the councillor
The changes to Simpson Street have most certainly changed the streetscape and have made for a more appealing look to an old railway town. It would then be without doubt, with all the money spent on the upgrade, that the Town Planners had factored in a traffic plan to complement the end product. It would possibly be a local traffic area only with restricted heavy vehicle access, a turn right arrow at the Co-op corner, directions to Steve Irwin Way and similar at the other end at the roundabout, with directions to Landsborough, routing the traffic along Peachester Road via the traffic lights. At the moment I have seen large vehicles and through traffic clogging up the intersection, as the time allowed for the lights is too short to turn into Peachester Road. You have to wait up to three changes before you can turn, also the old left turn light is still there, even though the lane has been removed. It would be good to know that these improvements to the traffic flow are in hand and it will be implemented sooner rather than later. Helping the homeless
Winter Angels would like to update and congratulate all the Angels and supporting community whose compassion and dedication in knitting / crocheting woollen items, or just giving wool has helped to make 2014 another successful year. Our charity, Winter Angels, donated 3,815 items to our own Queensland’s homeless and needy through a wide variety of churches and organisations having soup kitchens, thereby ensuring a direct contact with ‘no discrimination’, as our quest is to reach out to and help keep them warmer during the cold winter months. Since our Queensland charity (based in Landsborough) commenced in 2012, the total woollen items donated out is 10,000 – going to support our local Sunshine Coast areas and extending out to Toowoomba, Dalby, Esk, Ipswich areas, extended Brisbane areas, and the Gold Coast. Some time ago, when I was experiencing financial difficulties, I approached the Anglican Church Community Assist (ACCA) Food Bank, which operates out of BADYACC (next to Beerwah skate park). They were very courteous, empathetic and accepted my situation without judgement and were able to provide me immediately with a substantial food hamper. This charitable act proved to be a life saver that sustained me until my next pay day. On Saturday, August 2 from midnight to 3.00am, you could not breathe in the foul air without filtering through the bed sheets. It really was an extreme stink, and such miasma is an acute health risk; not to mention the layer of chook dust on homes and cars. Yes they were here first, but the government should buy them out, and shift them further away from the residential area. Beerwah could grow west then. Around two years ago I had a letter printed in GCNews where I wrote condemning the person(s) responsible for cutting down trees off the road edge nearing the top left-hand side of the Peachester Range Road. It appeared it was to enable residents to enjoy an unimpeded view of the Glass House Mountains. Sadly, it would seem, trees that have since grown to a reasonable height are now being poisoned. It seems for some people it’s more important to have a ‘clear view’ than to look out onto our beautiful native flora. Shame, shame, shame on the person(s) responsible. Scarecrow raising awareness
A huge ’thank you’ needs to be expressed to all residents who have participated in the current ‘Scarecrow Competition’. It is such a wonderful success with many varied and colourful scarecrows being creatively produced. This competition is held to raise awareness for the upcoming Cancer Council Fundraising event ‘Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival’, as well as remind us that there are many people across Australia and the world who suffer from cancer. It is a long held dream that one day cures will be found to eradicate cancer, but this takes research and money. Please admire the creative skills of the artists who have handcrafted these scarecrows for our enjoyment. This is also a plea that no one vandalises them as this behaviour would not only devastate the artist, but also those families who have loved ones suffering from the effects of cancer. Wireless broadband not the answer
Recently I was contacted by a ‘Property Professional’ acting on behalf of the NBNCo Limited in relation to my property on Mountain View Road at Maleny as a possible location for a proposed radio network base station facility for the development of wireless broadband. Having seen ads in the Range News earlier in the year advising residents that this project would be undertaken I was not surprised, however I now realise that I and the broader community may not have given the idea the consideration we should have. On receiving the letter I decided I needed to find out more about the effects for humans living with exposure to electromagnetic radiation and decided that I would undertake some research of my own into it. After reading some of the formal studies undertaken overseas I have since become quite alarmed by the future implications for me and any of the other landowners and residents in agreeing to a lease arrangement on our land. While there is a number of negative factors to consider including, potential lowering of property value or less potential for renting out your property as well as that the technology is not as fast as underground fibre optics cables, my main concern is around the potential damage to human health. From my research that focuses on studies undertaken overseas there is a broad range of side effects for people living near a base station including fatigue, headache, sleep disruption, depression, decreased libido, memory loss, dizziness, nausea, increased risk of cancer, tremors, loss of appetite, rashes, visual disruptions and overall discomfort. As the process of finalising sites for the fixed wireless broadband is almost complete I feel that as a community we should be rejecting this as an option for our local area. I would encourage anyone who has concerns for the long term future impacts to our hinterland lifestyle and our individual health to write to the NBNCo Limited and let them know how you feel! As the President of the Citizens Club at the time of the Club’s eviction from the RSL I thought it was important to clarify the comments made by Ron Hills in GCNews, August 6 edition regarding the reason for the RSL Club’s temporary closure from April 2011. Ron suggests that the reason behind the closure was that the Citizens Club was trying to remove the RSL influence from the club. However the truth is that it was the failed attempt by the RSL Sub Branch, over the Citizens Club that resulted in the Citizens Club being given notice. I have the documentation to prove this and would be more than happy with any community member who wishes to see it. If the RSL is honestly going to ask the members of the community to support the Club, then may I suggest that potential members, upon application for joining, seek clarification about how many general citizens will be elected to the management committee? Students said the food was the best ever! “We had five-star restaurant style dishes every day. “Camp highlights included the sensory walk where we were blind folded and led through an obstacle course by rope, the team challenges, gold fossicking, lots of teamwork games, the wet sclerophyll walk and bird watching at 6.30am in the freezing cold!” said Kit and Lucy. “On our second day of camp, we cooked up some of ‘the best damper ever seen’, according to

Contributed by Coral Beutel, Vice President In June members travelled to Palmwoods for the Nambour North Coast Divisional meeting. June 20 was the divisional finals at Maroocydore branch. Those people who won competitions will go on to the state conference in Ipswich from October 28 – 31. They are Joan Kropp with packet cake and tea cake, Cath Howitt ginger slice, and Coral Beutel date loaf, orange bar, plate biscuits and tomato relish in the cooking. We don’t do so well in photography, with lots of seconds but no firsts. Cath Howitt won with her knitted doll in the knitting and crochet. The markets on July 26 were a success once again with the branch selling over 60 cakes etc. Tuesday, July 29 was our AGM with Joan Kropp going in as our president. Coral Beutel vice president, Margaret Ferris secretary, Bev Wild treasurer and Cath Howitt international officer. A lovely lunch was served to visiting members and executive officers. The hot soup was most appreciated. As outgoing president Coral was presented with a beautiful pot plant. Birthday cakes were cut by Nessie Pratten who was 95 and Joan Kropp tunred 80. Nessie, Bev Wild and Coral were presented with service certificates from state office. On Thursday, July 31 some of our members were invited to Nessie’s home to a lovely morning tea to help her celebrate her birthday. Peachester branch will host the Nambour north coast divisional meeting on August 14 at the Peachester Hall at 10.00am. All welcome. In July we catered for 80 people attending the ‘going home party’ for the late Helen Eddie. On Sunday, October 19 from 1.00pm until 4.00pm we will be serving afternoon tea in the Peachester Hall as part of the event ‘Showcasing Peachester’ which will be part of the Glasshouse Country Festival. This will include all things going on in the Peachester area. After viewing all on display the walk in the cemetery hosted by the Peachester History will start. Information about the cemetery and the early settlers is all part of Peachester’s History.

Tax Update 2015 Withholding Tax and Super Guarantee From July 1, 2014 the tax rates have changed to incorporate the Medicare levy increase, as an employer either upgrade your software to incorporate these new rates or the 2015 Tax Tables are available to download from the ATO. The Superannuation Guarantee Charge has increased to 9.50% from July 1, 2014. PAYG Payment Summary Statements Due If you employ staff you should have issued them with the Payment Summaries (Group Certificates) by now. You also need to lodge your annual PAYG Payment Summary Statement with the ATO by August 14. The only exception is for businesses that only employ ‘closely held employees’. That is someone that is directly related to the entity from which the wages are received. These employers are able to lodge theirs when the Tax Return for the business is due. Have you lodged your Taxable Payments Annual Report? For businesses that operate in the building and construction industry, a Taxable Payments Report must be lodged by July 21 each year. You are required to use this to report to the ATO payments made to your contractors during the year. Some accounting programs now have this report set up so it can be lodged electronically. The New Tax Receipt! From July 1, 2014, most taxpayers will receive a tax receipt as part of the annual income tax return process. This is a new government
initiative to increase transparency on how and where the government spends taxpayer money. The tax receipt provides a breakdown on how your tax has contributed towards government expenditure and provides some information on the level of Australian Government debt. Avoid Tax Scams! The ATO is increasing its use of email and SMS to contact taxpayers making it more difficult to spot a scam out there. So, how do you know it is the ATO contacting you? As with banks, the ATO will never contact you and ask for personal details such as bank account details, passwords, licence numbers or credit card details. If you are being asked for this information, it is almost definitely a scam and you should delete the email without clicking / opening on any attachments / links. If you have any doubts at all, the best thing is to contact the ATO using the numbers on their website (not on the email) or contact our office.

Out and About New Men's Shed facility There was plenty of excitement in the air recently as Glasshouse Country Care held the official opening of the new Men's Shed building on their grounds, on Peachester Road, Beerwah. Physical activity in decline among Australia’s over 50s
Three quarters (77%) of Australia’s over 50s say they are committed to living a healthy and active lifestyle, yet almost half have decreased their level of physical activity in the past five years, according to new research by Apia, the leading national insurer for over 50s. Worryingly, Apia’s research found that almost a quarter (22%) of those who had decreased their level of activity admitted to being very inactive. David Skapinker, Apia spokesperson said growing older shouldn’t mean growing inactive. “People tend to think that as they age they no longer need to exercise as often as they did in their younger years, they may injure themselves while exercising if they are frail or weak, and only vigorous activities have any real health benefit, however this is simply not the case,” he said. Dr Ross Walker, one of Australia’s best-known and most respected health experts, added that you’re never too old to exercise. “Most physical activity can be modified to accommodate injuries or weakness so there’s always a way to stay active, no matter what your age,” he said. “To maintain a healthy and active lifestyle in your 50s and beyond, the key is to focus on changing the nature of what you do as you get older, instead of just reducing the amount of what you currently do.” Dr Walker suggested opting for lower impact forms of exercise. “These can be easier on the body while still providing all the benefits of more vigorous physical activity. “Mindfulness exercises such as yoga, tai chi or qigong are undeniably important as well as they cultivate health, reduce stress and can be done at any age or fitness level.” If you haven’t done much exercise for a while, it’s important to gradually build up activity levels to prevent injury and allow yourself time to regain strength and flexibility. And remember to have a thorough check-up with your doctor before commencing any intensive exercise program.

Mrs Middleditch from Beerwah understands good value. Throughout her 92 years she has managed her household and finances, and now balances running her home on a pension. One of the Sunshine Coast’s biggest senior's week events is set to take centre stage again on Sunday, August 24, when hundreds of over 50s locals, are expected to pound the Caloundra pavement with the annual Australian Pensioner and Superannuants League (APSL) amateur fun walk. APSL Caloundra branch President Frank Gower said the walk, now in its 15th year, first started in 2000 with just 30 people attending. Last year there was about 400 who participated. “What we found was there was nothing on the Sunshine Coast in this form to give seniors a day out so that’s why we started it,” he said. “It’s really about promoting social inclusion, forming friendships, being active and having a fun time. “Last year we had a 95-year-old attend which was very impressive,” said Frank. “It doesn’t have to be competitive and is just a great morning out that’s finished by lunchtime.” The scenic four kilometre flat walk along the Golden Beach foreshore starts at Oaks Oasis Resort, North Street, Caloundra (Landsborough Parade). Registration is at 7.00am for an 8.00am start (with voluntary warm up) there are categories for 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80+, 90+. The event finishes at the Caloundra Power Boat Club (leave your car at the Caloundra Power Boat Club and take the free shuttle bus to the start). Complimentary refreshments for walkers, trophies, prizes and free gifts for all. Prizes for best fancy dress. Congratulations Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed
On August 2 I attended the official opening of the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed. This new facility was built by Glasshouse Country Care on their grounds at Peachester Road, Beerwah. The collaboration between these two fantastic community groups needs to be commended. Glasshouse Country Care has been servicing the Hinterland since 1996 and by constructing this shed they are allowing the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed to expand and provide a positive benefit to the Hinterland community. Congratulations to both organisations!
NDIS report
On July 29 the first progress report from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Joint Standing Committee was released. In my role as Chair of the Committee I have visited the NDIS trial sites and heard from people living with a disability, their carers and service providers on what parts of the NDIS are working and areas that require improvement. I would like to thank the committee and all of those who gave evidence through this process. While some good progress has been made, the report clearly articulates that there is still a lot of work to be done. For those who are interested, I have extracted the recommendations to provide a quick overview of the issues, concerns and suggestions of the committee at this time. Recently I had the pleasure of attending the celebration of the relocation of the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed at Peachester Road, Beerwah. Can I say a big congratulations to President Bob Carruthers and all the team at the Men’s Shed for their growth and the great programs they do in supporting the community. The Men’s Shed movement was first started in 2007 as a chance for people to get together to share ideas, activities and information. The movement has been so popular Australiawide it has been hailed a huge success in helping to reduce symptoms of depression. Successful community grant forums Thank you to those people that attended the two grants information sessions that I held in the electorate recently. I certainly found the sessions to be very informative and trust that those in attendance were able to gain some insight into making their own future applications for the range of grant programs on offer. The importance of a morning routine

How do you start your day? Do you wake up easily, eat a healthy breakfast and exercise before starting the rest of your day? Or do you press the Snooze button three times, stump your toe on the bed while stumbling to the bathroom, then rush to get yourself prepared to run out of the door just to make it to work on time? Can you imagine that the start of your day, makes a big difference on how the rest of your day will go? I for one prefer to have a good day over a bad day if given a choice. While you can’t control everything in life, the truth is you can control yourself and that will have a major impact on your day and subsequently on your life. One strategy to have a great day and great life is to have a morning ritual. Whether planned or not, we all have morning rituals. Consider the two options mentioned previously, both are morning rituals. However, one is a planned strategy to increase the chance of a great day, while the other is not planned and therefore leaves the day up to chance. These days there are Life Coaches on every corner, and most speak about the Law of Attraction, your ‘thoughts become things’, etc. While this is 100% true, you can’t sit around all day thinking but not doing and expect your life to change. In my experience, the best way to start is at the beginning…as soon as you wake up each day. Nearly every successful person (define success whichever way you please) has a prepared morning ritual, or an ‘hour of power’ to start their day. A few things to include in your morning routine might be: • Wake up on the first alarm. • Put good thoughts into your head – maybe read something motivational (not Facebook!) • Exercise, even if briefly. • Eat a nutritious breakfast. • Take 5 minutes to plan the most important things that must be accomplished that day. Beerwah Prostate Cancer Forum set for September
Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle is calling on local residents to attend a prostate cancer forum that will be held next month. Coinciding with Prostate Cancer Awareness month, the forum will also encourage men to undergo regular health checks. Several health speakers will comprise the forum, to be held on September 5 at the Beerwah Community Hall from 10.00am – 12.00noon. Mr McArdle said it was crucial to shine the spotlight on men’s health. “Two years ago I participated in Movember to raise funds for men’s health, and little did I know that last year, I would be diagnosed with prostate cancer,” Mr McArdle said. “While I’m very lucky it was caught early, my mission is to try and raise awareness among men and their wives and partners about the importance of undergoing regular health checks.” Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group Co-Ordinator Bob McLean said it was very important local residents know the facts surrounding prostate cancer. “It’s absolutely imperative for all males aged over 40 to be aware of what prostate cancer is all about and the consequences,” Mr McLean said. “There’s no one-size fits all, there’s a broad range of symptoms to be aware of. “We have to get this prostate cancer conversation going, after you’ve been there, there’s definitely no inhibitions anymore.” Data from Cancer Australia shows prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Australian men (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer), accounting for 30 % of all new cancers in men in 2010. In 2014, about 20,810 Australian men are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Community groups will be invited to attend and local residents are also encouraged to attend. Happenings Out and About Beerwah to celebrate A free family-friendly event to officially open and celebrate both the 2014 Glasshouse Country Festival and Sunshine Coast Council’s $4 million Simpson Street upgrade, is being planned for Friday, October 17. Simpson Street will be closed for the celebration which will give community groups and local businesses the opportunity to showcase the town centre and proudly state that Beerwah is open for business. A group of dedicated volunteers, including representatives from The Beerwah Country Women’s Association (CWA) and Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce, are working with the Sunshine Coast Council and the Hinterland Community Development Association of Caloundra to plan the event. The committee hopes that more people and groups will become involved and establish the event as an annual part of the Glasshouse Country Festival. “As a new resident to the area, this has been a great way to meet proactive business and community members. I look forward to celebrating this vibrant community event,” said Judy Tomlinson, Chamber committee representative. The popular CWA Arts and Crafts market will be a key drawcard. “We want an event that helps build a positive image for Beerwah and creates opportunity for business and local arts and crafts people to come together and showcase their wares,” said Debbie Ives CWA committee representative. Other activities include live music featuring local band ‘The Superdads’, a school talent showcase, market stalls, street dining and a kid’s zone. Individuals and community groups interested in supporting the Beerwah celebration can become involved through having an active role or providing sponsorship. Splat goes the teacher Saturday’s Funfest at Glasshouse Country Christian College really lived up to its name with a full-on fun-packed festival. The most popular event by far was ‘Splat the Teacher’. Brave teachers volunteered to sit under a water balloon while students, other teachers and family members threw balls at a target. When the ball hit the target it triggered the balloon to be pricked and cold water splashed all over the cowering teacher. Some teachers took it on the chin, some flinched violently every time a ball was thrown, and some came dressed for watery fun in flippers and goggles. Chappies, teachers and even the principal couldn’t escape the Splat Machine with students having such excellent aim.

Kale … it has been dubbed as the ‘super food’ of the vegetable world, or the ‘Queen of Greens’. Based on the figures surrounding its nutritional value, it’s quite understandable how it got this title. It has been found that per calorie, kale has more iron than beef, more calcium than milk and 10 per cent more Vitamin C than spinach! My skeptic nature made me then question exactly how much kale I would have to consume to gain all of these proclaimed nutrients? Surprisingly though, after further research I found that just one cup of chopped kale contains 33 calories, hence 8% of iron, 9% of the daily value of calcium, 206% of vitamin A, 134% of vitamin C, and a whopping 684% of vitamin K. Now convinced it definitely has the nutritional tick, my next thought was whether it was actually edible, and not taste like something that can be eaten, but really should not be. After steaming some up in much the same way as silverbeet, I served up nearly a Tonka truckload of kale, as I found it apparently doesn’t loose its volume when steamed like silverbeet does. It received approval from all, except my fussiest family member, who has an aversion to anything green. So how to grow this Queen of Greens? Kale, otherwise known as borecole, belongs to the Brassica family that includes cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, collards, broccoli, and brussels sprouts. It’s one of those great, ‘pick-and-come-again’ veggies, it can have curly or plain leaves, and can range in colour from green, purple and even black. I have planted out both green and purple kale and have found it to be surprisingly easy to grow. When preparing for any brassica crop, I like to ensure there is loads of organic matter and some high nitrogen fertiliser, such as chook manure or dynamic lifter. At planting out, I water in my seedling with seaweed-based solution to reduce transplantation shock. Throughout the growing period, I aim to maintain the nitrogen in the soil by weekly to fortnightly applications of fish emulsion. I maintain this practice as I harvest to keep the kale producing fresh new leaves. Any leaves that begin to yellow and die off, be sure to remove them, to prevent disease from occurring. On the pest front, I haven’t experienced any major problems so far with my kale, however I have noted that whilst there are some incidents of white cabbage moth larvae, kale is not even remotely as susceptible to attack as broccoli and cauliflower. The minor infestations I get, I treat with Dipel as required. The final beauty to kale is that it can be grown throughout the year. During the cooler months it can be grown to maturity as a winter vegetable and in the warmer months, it can be picked early as a micro green to be added to mixed salads. If you get a chance, look into planting some different varieties of the Queen of Greens along with other salad mix greens like spinach and lettuce, and you will be kicking off the warmer weather with nutritious salads in no time! Father Kevin Smith Catholic Church Visiting the Sea of Galilee is a necessary part of a journey to Israel. This large body of water is a valuable resource in the economy of the country today as it was in the time of Jesus. Galilee looms large in the story of Jesus with a considerable part of his ministry taking place on its shores. Matthew gives us a description of one event but it does not occur on the shore but rather on its waters. In Matthew 14:22-33 we have the familiar account of Jesus appearing to the disciples as they row towards the shore during a storm. It is dark, early morning and the wind and waves rage. Not only does Jesus walk on the Sea but he calls his friend Peter to come to him over the water. The impetuous Peter gets out of the boat into the storm and don't we all. We commence new careers, enter relationships, begin marriages and family life. As we do so we have all the confidence in the world not realising that these natural and important decisions will also involve some time in stormy waters. Our plans made with love and good intention, can sometimes lead us into an experience of near drowning.

Peter survived while keeping his gaze fixed on Jesus, his friend and teacher. However, when he took his attention away from Him he began to drown and was overwhelmed by the wind and waves that raged around him. Even though Peter was terrified, Jesus took the initiative, and reached out to save him. At those times when our plans and dreams are quickly coming undone, we seem to have little control and life's circumstances are overwhelming us can we fix our gaze on that which is life giving. God does not want us to ‘drown’. The dreams, plans and loves that make up our lives are for our good but they will include some scary times and storms that may seem more than we can handle. Can we reach out to the one who always wants to save us?

In Round 2 on Wednesday (at home), Glasshouse Country 45 def Caboolture Memorial 40. Marleen Bertram’s team had two wins and Chris Freshwater’s team had a win and a draw, being a good start to the season. Thursday afternoon’s ‘Open Pairs’ game was won by Peter Astbury and Mac Townson with two wins and a highest margin of + 22 and the Runners-up were Brian Saunders and Rob Scullion, being the Winners of the Losers from Game 1,with a score of + 16 in Game 2. Results of Round 5 of the Men’s Pennant Competition last Saturday were, Glasshouse Country Division 2 defeated Woodford 64 to 59, Division 4 drew with Caboolture Lakes 40 all and Division 5 went down to Bongaree 40 to 37. This Saturday in Round 6, Division 2 plays its final round against Bribie Island (at home), Division 4 has a BYE and Division 5 plays Caboolture Lakes (at home). With their generous sponsorship we have been able to purchase a full kit of jumpers. The Master will be playing their final scheduled game for the year this coming Sunday at Landsborough against the Hervey Bay Fruit bats at 2.00pm. The club will also be hosting three junior finals prior to the Masters game and are looking for a big turn out from our local AFL supporters on the day. Coach Paul McRostie has been thoroughly impressed with how the team has gelled during the first three games this year and wants to finish off on a high note. The purpose of ‘Masters Footy’ is to provide an opportunity for people to play (start, resume or continue) Australian Rules outside of the senior competitions. The motto is Footy for Fun, Fitness and Friendship. There are physical and social benefits of playing footy for as long as possible and Masters attract all sizes, shapes and playing abilities from complete newbie’s to ex AFL players. Last year the youngest player was 32 and our oldest 69! Any interested AFL players who would like to come have a run and improve their fitness are welcome to come down on the day, or attend training on this Thursday night at the Landsborough complex from 5.30pm. The Medals were once again generously sponsored by club professional, John Mellish and we thank John for his ongoing support of the ladies competition. The winner of Division 1, with the round of the day was Mavis Brimelow with a great score of 70 Nett. Helping Mavis to her win was some great putting and she took home the prize for best putter on the day. Mavis was followed by runner up Heather Henn on 72 Nett. Andrea Campbell came in with the best Gross score after shooting 83 off the stick. Pauline Masen won Division 2 with a Nett score of 72. Pauline was followed by Beth Butler on 73 Nett. Winner of the Gross was Jen Kelly with 95 off the stick. The biggest round of applause was reserved for our Life Member, Joan Harvey, who won Division 3 with a terrific score of 71 Nett. Well done Joanie, it’s great to see you out playing such good golf. Joan was followed by Rose Ballard who came in with a 74 Nett. Janelle Balfe won the Gross with 104 off the stick. Nearest to the Pins went to Lea Doyle on 2, Val Turner on 5 and Cath Cherry on the 16th. Division 1 on the 18 was a skinner, while Fay Raven was closest in Division 2. We hold a Random Birdie Hole every week, which usually goes begging, but not this week. Andrea Campbell scored a 3 on the par 4, 14th to take home Birdie Box. The ball rundown went to some players on 78 Nett after the dreaded count back. The Club is hosting our Annual Pro Am on Wednesday, August 13, with sponsorship from the Beerwah Hotel.
