Hi Everyone... In last week’s edition of GC&M News we let readers (who received the paper on Tuesday) know that they would be able to see the locally filmed MasterChef program that night. Fortunately, we were given the heads up about the show’s location the week before but all the details about the show were kept under wraps. When we finally watched the show the ingredients showcased included ginger, pineapple, macadamia nuts, honey and finger limes. We realised that although the show was filmed in Maleny it was pretty much the flavours of Glasshouse Country on a plate. Watching the way contestants came up with the many different ways to use our beautiful local ingredients has got me thinking about how we could incorporate some cooking ideas from our talented locals in the paper. Local News P is for Peachester P is for Park P is also for perseverance … which the people of Peachester have in profusion. More than 100 people recently gathered at the land on the corner of High Street and Peachester Road for a cheerful community protest to show their continued resolve and overwhelming support for a new park in their town. The land is a state government owned block slated for sale but the locals had been promised it would be protected as a community park. Since early April, residents have campaigned to stop the sale and have Sunshine Coast Council take control of the land as part of its open space network. A letter from Dr Anthony Lynham, the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy, has indicated that a meeting has taken place between his department and council officers and that the department will continue to actively work with the council to have the property transferred as a reserve for recreation. While being optimistic, residents remain cautious
until a formal resolution is handed down and they are keen not to let their patience look like complacency. Cr Rick Judy Tomlinson with Cr Rick Baberowski, who Baberowski attended the community gathering, told the residents how positive he was about the likelihood of securing the land and the next steps that would be taken. A petition undertaken to show the passion of locals for a parkland, with almost 700 signatures garnered, will be presented to Dr Lynham by local resident Judy Tomlinson and Andrew Powell, the Member for Glass House on Thursday. Residents are now working on a concise briefing document for the Minister that includes a timeline of events outlining all action and communication between the community of Peachester and the council over the past 30 years. It also outlines their aim to utilise and improve the High Street and the sport and recreation ground as park locations. Residents who have been part of such discussions and actions are urged to come forward to build the most accurate timeline possible to present to the Minister. For locals to keep up to date, a Facebook page has been created – A Park for Peachester.

Local farmers make MasterChef If you saw the MasterChef episode last week, which was filmed at The Old Diary Maleny, you may have noticed that one of the five “iconic Sunshine Coast ingredients” featured was Peachester’s own Hum Honey. Hum Honey, the cold pressed honey success story founded by Peachester local Leisa Sams, was crowned best new product at the 2018 Fine Food Australia awards and the champion regional food at the 2018 Sydney Royal Fine Food Show. But did you know that three of the other four iconic ingredients came from our local area too? The finger limes were from Green Valley Fingerlimes in Beerwah, the macadamias from Suncoast Gold Macadamias with local farms supplying the nuts, and the pineapples came from a Tropical Pines farm supplier, of which there are plenty in Glasshouse Country. Green Valley Fingerlimes is owned and operated by well known local Jade King, who also runs an agronomy consultancy and educational farm (Green Valley Farm), and teaches agriculture at the Glasshouse Christian College. Jade’s champagne red finger limes shone like ruby beads when revealed on the show. Jade was humbled to have her fruit featured on the show. “It was unexpected but it’s a great compliment to be chosen as one of the Sunshine Coast’s iconic ingredients,” Jade said.

Future’s bright for Aussie horticulture
Custard apple and macadamia farmer Daniel Jackson, from Glass House Mountains, is one of three Queensland producers who make up the eight fruit and vegetable growers shortlisted for the prestigious 2019 Young Grower of the Year Award that honours growers aged 35 years and under. The national award recognises the next generation of the Australian horticulture industry, specifically those who Daniel and his daughter Grace demonstrate a high level of commitment to innovation and who have a track record of dedication to their local community and the broader agriculture industry. When Daniel, from Jackson Agricultural Company, was asked how he felt about being shortlisted for the award he said it was very motivating to be recognised for the efforts he was putting in and gave him the drive to achieve more. He believes that it is important to share the success stories of young growers and show that it is possible to have a prosperous career in agriculture, thus encouraging other young people into farming. “The greatest challenge for young growers is accessing capital to enter agriculture and, in most cases, young farmers require both on farm and off farm income, which can be difficult to manage,” Daniel said. He also thinks it is a fantastic opportunity to help shape the future of agriculture in Australia. The award is part of the AUSVEG National Awards for Excellence, which will be presented on Wednesday, June 26 during the Hort Connections convention in Melbourne.
Strawesome winter strawberries
Local strawberry growers are set to serve up a ‘strawesome’ winter season following the official launch last week at Strawberry Fields by the Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries, Mark Furner Queensland’s contribution to winter production is significant with locally grown strawberries renowned for their size, colour and juicy flavour. Mr Furner said Queensland strawberry growers produced up to 30,000 tonnes or about 60 million punnets of fruit per season, which is about 40% of Australia’s annual strawberry production. “These sweet and nutritious local strawberries can be used in winter warmers such as crumbles, a strawberry version of banana bread, on pancakes with syrup, in traditional favourites like strawberries and cream, in smoothies or even as a tasty addition to salsas,” he said. Mr Furner said Queensland strawberries made an important contribution to the state’s economy and the launch of the winter season was a perfect reminder for families to add strawberries to the weekly shopping list now. Queensland Strawberry Growers’ Association president and proud strawberry farmer in Elimbah, Luigi Coco, said he was optimistic about the availability and quality of the fresh strawberries to come this season. “After a difficult start with drought-affected strawberry nursery plants, the current warm sunny days are helping the young plants to get established and start to produce their wonderful balls of winter sunshine,” Mr Coco said. “The late start to the season has meant that strawberries have been slightly scarce for the past few weeks. “As our growers start to pick their first harvests, I urge Queenslanders to get out and start buying strawberries now as Strawberry grower Luigi Coco some of the freshest, juiciest berries can be had in June and July.” witk Minister Mark Furner

GC&M News caught up with retail operations manager Ben Prince to find out more about the story behind the local business. Q: Tell us more about the Fresh&Save concept Fresh&Save works wholly by providing the best value for our customers. As we are a small business, and work in it every day, we can deliver the best experience possible and also move quickly to respond to customer requests and enquiries. Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs
When is a car show good for your health? When it’s Muscle on the Mountain to be held on Sunday, July 7 at the Maleny Showgrounds. This year is the ninth annual Muscle on the Mountain Show and Shine Day and once again it is all about raising awareness of men’s health and funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, and maybe a little bit about great family fun and a little bit of motoring envy. If you haven’t previously been to the event you can expect to see up to 1,000 amazing vehicles including Holden, HSV, Ford, FPV, muscle cars, street machines, hot rods, vintage and classic cars and motorcycles. The team of people behind the event know that in Australia prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men and more men die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer. They could see the great work being done by the McGraw Foundation for breast cancer and it inspired them to do something focussed on the fellas. So nearly a decade ago a small group of carloving Maleny locals got together and started organising Muscle on the Mountain. One of the event organisers Colin Sinclair said that in the first three years Muscle on the Mountain doubled in size with more funds raised each year. To date they have raised more than $80,000 in total and are keen to see that continue to grow. The event officially kicks off at 9am and wraps up around 1.30pm with gates open at 7am for set up and a barbeque breakfast.

Rachel Fentiman
Maleny local Rachel Fentiman is a multitalented performer, jewellery designer and one of the friendly faces at Judi Coey Optometrist. Rachel will be appearing in a key role in a local production of ‘Motherhood the Musical’ that will be performed at the Events Centre in early August. GC&M News caught up with Rachel to find out more about her theatrical talents. Q: How did you first become interested in performing? When I was a kid, I was so shy. My mum ‘made’ me go to an audition for a production of Henry VIII, a comedy with the Maleny Players. I was terrified but from the moment of that first rehearsal, I knew I’d found my passion. I’ve been hooked ever since.
Q: What theatre groups have you been involved with? As well as Maleny Players, I’ve been a core member of Suncoast Repertory Theatre (SRT) since 2004 and I have worked with BATS of Buderim, Noosa Arts Theatre and Lind Lane of Nambour. This is my first time working with Sugar Rush Theatre. Q: How difficult do you find auditioning for roles? You know it’s funny, after that very first audition back when I was 12, I haven’t ever auditioned for anything since then thanks to word of mouth! So even though I’ve been in over 50 stage productions, performing hundreds of times, when I arrived at auditions for ‘Motherhood the Musical’ I was trembling in my boots! But after meeting the producer and director, I felt right at home. Q: This is the first musical you’ve been involved in. How did you prepare for the role? I’ve always dabbled in singing. I’ve been in a few cabaret-style shows with SRT and my brother and I recorded an album a few years ago of original music. Music has always been a common thread in my family so it’s always played a vital role in my life. I was brought up on a very healthy diet of The Beatles, Carol King, Crowded House and whatever was playing on 4KQ! Never a day goes by when I don’t sing.
Q: What do particularly love about this latest production? I love this production because it’s so gritty and true to life, yet it takes you on a ride. There’s nothing left off the table. There are hilarious and touching songs about secret motherhood business - things that I had no idea about. I’m certainly learning a great deal about what motherhood entails as well as how to be in a musical. Q: Where did you draw your inspiration for the character role of Tash? This will sound cliché but my mum, for her kindness and generosity, her great sense of humour, not just as a mum, but as a person contributing to the wider world. Q: Why should people go to see this production? You should not see this production if you don’t like laughing and having a great time, because that’s what we’re all about! ‘Motherhood the Musical’ is for all adults mums, dads, grandparents, brothers and sisters. It touches on some rather sensitive topics like divorce or the shock of being a brand new parent but the seriousness is very much balanced out with moments of utter joy and silliness. Out of all the productions I’ve been in, this one I think has the broadest appeal simply because everyone has a mum.

musicians form the nucleus of our group and because of their exceptional talent we are able to give every member the opportunity of performing as a soloist.” The Maleny program will include a Concerto for violin, strings and basso continuo by Vivaldi, a Concerto for bassoon and orchestra by Mozart, Paganini’s ‘Moses Variation’ for violin and orchestra and Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Saint-Saens. St George’s Church Maleny is at 2 Walkers Drive and has excellent acoustics. Last month it hosted a sold out performance by Kim Kirkman with harp, violin and voice, in the first of a series of St George’s-in-the-Hills concerts. There is also plenty of parking within the church grounds and cars can drive right up to the church door for setting down if necessary. Afternoon tea will be available in the attached church hall after the performance or during the interval. Tickets are $40, $35 concessions and $30 students and are available form Maleny Visitors Centre or at the door from 1pm.

Much loved classical music will be on the program at 2pm on Saturday, June 22 when world-renowned group, Chamber Philharmonia Cologne, which has never before been heard in the hinterland, will perform at St George’s Church Maleny. Playing bassoon, violoncello and violin, the group’s motto is “Classical music the world over”. They travel from one of Germany’s best known music centres through Europe and across the world bringing a mix of popular and unknown works from a wide variety of musical eras. Manager of the group Jens Kehling said they give about 300 concerts a year around the world in a variety of venues including Cologne Cathedral, the Sydney Opera House and small village churches. “That is why music lovers everywhere look forward to an encounter with our exceptionally talented musicians, drawn from one of the foremost music and instrumental training centres in Europe,” he said. “They love what they do, wherever they play. “The Cologne University of Music trained

Koongalba was state heritage listed in 1995. Koongalba was built by William Andrew Grigor, son of Glass House pioneer William Grigor, and he was paid £23.4.8 for his work. William Andrew, or Willie as John Low called him, had a good reputation for building houses and so was given the job. John Anthony Low (1863–1914) was the son of James Low, a long-term business partner of William Grigor. Low and Grigor first met and went into business in 1857 at Moggill. They then relocated to William Pettigrew’s Mooloolah River timber depot until relocating further in 1868 - the Lows to Yandina and the Grigors to Glass House. Willie Grigor and John Low were the second generation of the Low and Grigor families. They had known each other from their earliest years. John Low’s letterbook 1893–1900 contains the correspondence for the building of Koongalba and provides the following details. On 2 October 1893 he wrote to Willie Grigor asking him for lengths and sizes of timber and an estimate of cost of the house. Willie had already been to Yandina to receive the plans. In November 1893 he wrote again to Willie Grigor to say the hardwood and rough pine would be ready in a fortnight and would he be at liberty about then to erect same, writing “I note your price for the erection if I find one or two labourers”. The house would be four rooms and four verandahs with a separate storeroom and kitchen linked by a walkway. The roof would be wooden shingles. John Low’s plan was to supply the logs and both Pettigrew and Heddon would cut them to size. The sawn timber would then be punted back up the river and brought by wagon to the house site. Doors and windows were to be purchased from Pettigrew’s catalogue. John married Louisa on 24 January 1894 and the house was ready to move into by May. By July he needed to pay Willie Grigor and he wrote to him enclosing a postal note for £11 and said he was sorry he could not send full payment at that time. By 18 August Willie had been paid in full and he then sent a receipt for £23.4.8. Koongalba is still owned by a descendent of the Low family - Audienne Blyth and her husband Jim. Knitfest is on again this year on the weekend of July 6-7 and there are plenty of exciting new things happening, including some tasty additions to the program from Spicers Tamarind Retreat and Pomodaras on Obi and an opportunity to stargaze over Maleny. The program has been finalised for the 27 fibre art workshops this year and bookings are open on the website now, so if you are keen to give one a go then make sure you register early. On the Saturday, the Maleny Arts and Crafts Group will join the event and will be showcasing their skills with demonstrations and lovely handcrafted items for sale at the showgrounds. The Queensland Alpaca Association is back again with their raw fleece expo. Fleeces will be judged on Friday and more than 60 alpacas will be judged on the Saturday. Spicers Tamarind Retreat is offering some perfectly timed cooking classes on Friday, July 5, with an Italian winter cooking class. On Saturday, July 6 they will have a French cooking class plus their wonderfully relaxing Jazz in the Forest on the Sunday. On the Sunday, Pomodoras on Obi will hold three gourmet pizza-making classes at 10am, 12noon and 2pm. It is only $20 a pizza and the best part is that you get to take home the pizza you make. Of course, there will also be more than 100 trade and market stalls between the Maleny State School and the Maleny RSL Hall. There's bound to be something to please everyone. Bushland group working bee
Contributed by Gordon Reddick The Coochin Creek Bushland Group will hold its next working bee on schedule on the third Tuesday of the month, June 19, starting at 7.30am and knocking off at about 10.30am. Our group contributes to the preservation of our wonderful reserve by tackling invasive weeds, removing rubbish and reporting to Sunshine Coast Council anything we find that needs attention and which is beyond our capabilities. This month we will move out of the area we have been weeding on the fringes of Caralan Park and start looking for invasive weeds deeper in the reserve. The weather is nice and cool at the moment so it is a great time to be out and about in the bush doing what we do. All are welcome to come and join us. If you do, please wear good shoes, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and a hat. Participation is free and everything required is supplied, including a cup of tea. If you can knit or crochet you can help this group supply handcrafted items to various organisations, including baby items for the Preterm Infants Parents’ Association (PIPA), Erowal Aged Care, Maleny Hospital, RangeCare, as well as beanies for cancer patients and the Salvation Army. Patterns, wool and needles are provided. The group has a number of phantom knitters who prefer to work at home and deliver their finished items to the Verandah Room of the Maleny Community Centre. Contributed by Patricia Bradford Only a small number of members to welcome to our last meeting but we still managed an interesting competition bench. The main discussion was about the program for the memorial ceremony for Nessie Pratten on June 20. Suella Lanceley spent an interesting and informative morning at Krishna Village, near Mt Warning in NSW, to learn about syntropic arboriculture, a different approach to agriculture. Suella plans to try some of these methods in her own garden, so it should be interesting to see the results sometime in the future. Members of other local organisations and family will join us on Thursday, June 20, at Peachester Hall for the Nessie Pratten memorial ceremony in the school grounds, to start at 10am. We need some helpers to arrive at the hall earlier to set up tables for morning tea. Please bring a plate. For members, there will be our competition bench and also some potted plants for decoration. Contributed by Janet Kitchin Our outing this month was to the Glasshouse District Park where we enjoyed morning tea followed by games and a sausage sizzle. It was a fun morning. The park is a lovely venue for functions such as ours and families to enjoy. Our next lunch meeting is on June 19, which will incorporate our 16th birthday party with the theme ‘A VIEW around the world’. We will meet at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at 11am. This will be a fun day with competitions for best dressed and best table, and raffles and trading tables. A buffet lunch is included. Anyone interested in joining us would be most welcome. Environment Taking care of Cahills Scrub - Peachester Contributed by Sandra Poole
Did you know that the little community of Peachester has its own land care group? For a small town it sure packs a collective punch. When my husband John and I moved here from Brisbane in 2016 we felt it straight away. I wanted to learn more about the surrounding bushland and get to know the locals (people as well as flora and fauna), so I joined FOCS (Friends of Cahill’s Scrub). Cahill’s Scrub is a reserve that runs from MacDonald Road through to Harold Place following a gully and creek that is filled with amazing plants and animals. Platypus have been seen in the creek and the scrub abounds with red-necked wallabies and echidnas, and is a highway for a little band of grey kangaroos with a magnificent buck that my son has nicknamed El Patron (don’t mess with him). Our intrepid and hard-working leader, Ted Prickett, being (a very youthful) 84 years old, decided to finally take a break from his tireless environmental contribution and hand the reins over to me. Of course I was not all that confident to do so but, under Ted’s very experienced guidance, I am beginning to understand more and more about the history and importance of this reserve. His wonderful wife Eunice contributes vitally to the group by supplying us with the most delicious savoury muffins I have ever tasted for our mid-morning break! We are a small band of volunteers who meet on the last Saturday of the month beginning in February and continuing through the cooler months from 9am-12noon. With the enthusiastic and incredibly knowledgeable assistance of our Sunshine Coast environmental contractor Brendan Stephen we have managed to plant and nurture, so far this year, around 620 young trees to help maintain the wild integrity of this special part of the world. Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network A universe beneath our feet Stop for a moment and look down. Beneath your feet, no matter where you are standing, is a whole universe full of life, of which we know very little. The complexity of subterranean communities in the soil is quite mindboggling. A teaspoon of good soil can contain a billion bacteria, metres of fungal strands, several thousand protozoans and a few dozen nematodes. In addition, larger organisms such as worms, ants, woodlice and springtails call the soil their home. There are numerous interactions between the members of these communities. Plants release excess carbohydrates into the soil as food for bacteria and fungi. Bacteria convert nitrogen and other nutrients into usable forms for plants. Fungi form extensive networks of strands (called mycelia) that link plants together, add to root masses, transport nutrients and trace elements between plants, and even allow communication between plants – forming a subterranean internet! In addition, these fungal threads have a sticky coating called glomalin, which is a major reservoir of carbon, thus helping mitigate greenhouse gases. Unfortunately, traditional gardening and farming methods, including digging and use of fertilisers and pesticides, threaten and even destroy these underground communities. We need to learn to nurture the natural biosphere through minimal digging, using green manure crops in between other crops to reduce bare soil, growing a diversity of crops rather than monocrops, adding organic matter regularly and avoiding the use of chemicals. In return, the natural organisms will improve the quality and water holding capacity of the soil, allowing a much better yield from crops. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? You Said It Another great Maleny Show
This year Maleny Agricultural Show celebrated its 82nd show and it was another great year in terms of dry weather and support from all those locals and visitors that attend each year. It was great to see the number of schools that got involved this year, more than ever before, which was really encouraging for the future. This year for the first time we used Showday online for registrations across a number of show categories. There were a few teething problems, as you would expect, but will be well worth the persistence as we move forward. The Show Society secretary would appreciate any feedback from those who used it. The success of an event this size is dependent on the hard work of many and I want everyone to know just how much we appreciate their commitment to making sure the event ran so smoothly. All in all it was a great year and I would really like to thank all those involved in making it happen, in particular the executive committee, the exhibitors, the competitors, the stewards, the businesses that sponsored events, the community groups that got involved and all of the volunteers. Let’s hope the sun shines on us again in 2020 and we look forward to seeing you at the showgrounds next year. Ivan Hankinson President Maleny Show Society
Age of criminal intent
Recently there has been discussion in the media that the age of criminal intent should be raised, which makes me wonder where these law making people come from, obviously another planet, certainly not Earth. I am most probably not the person to comment on such a thing, having been a police officer in New South Wales for more than 30 years, during which time I would estimate that I arrested and charged a few thousand children with criminal matters. The most frightening offender I had anything to do with was nine years of age, who was a patient at a local psychiatric centre, who would try to kill you with anything he had at hand, as quick as look at you. I can tell you on the night we received the report from the facility that he had escaped and we needed to locate him, the officers that made the arrest said that they had never seen eyes like this kid had, he was not handled with kid gloves, although he was a kid. As for the age of criminal intent these days, it should be coming down, not going up and the law makers, magistrates and judges should spend some time with the police who work the worst areas of the state. The authorities should be looking at the parents, guardians and people in charge of these kids, who are out of control. They don't care about themselves, so there is no way they are going to show respect to anyone else. The most important thing is that the young kids know they can literally do anything and get away with it because of their age. You can’t tell me that is right. Just as a matter of interest, police do not make these laws, they are just the poor silly buggers who have to enforce them and bear the brunt of them. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains 16

Change is scary
The people of Maleny may be interested to learn that Maleny Commerce has initiated a committee comprised of the leaders or representatives of the RSL, Lions, Rotary, Apex, Quota, Zonta, Pattemore House, the Maleny Sport and Recreation Club and the Neighbourhood Centre to coordinate various projects and proposals deemed beneficial to our community. One such proposal, from Rotary, is the installation of static exercise equipment along the Maleny Trail, the most popular amenity by far on our town's community precinct. Whatever the value of this addition, the committee is apparently unconcerned that the people who walk the trail and the volunteers who maintain it, not to mention the community at large, may have different or additional preferences, and that they would like to be heard before the committee presumes to make choices for them. One such preference is a community park for families and children on empty ground beside the trail leased to MDSRC, which opposes the idea with the tacit support of our service clubs. If one mentions this to people who live elsewhere, they cannot believe it. The formation of the coordinating committee coincides with the forthcoming foundation of a community trust by the new owners of the Maleny Credit Union. The question for the committee is whether it sees itself as a club that prioritises the proposals of its members before putting them through to the trust or some other source for funding, or as the vanguard of a participatory community peak body open to fresh ideas? Achieving the latter would be scary because change IS scary but Australia is fortunately home to a number of professional organisations that respectfully help community groups negotiate change. The Australian Resilience Centre is an impeccable example. How heartening it would be if the committee commissioned the ARC to help guide its future path. How great that would be for Maleny. On Thursday, May 9, I parked at 2.45pm in the Glasshouse Christian College car park adjacent to the church. There are many vehicles coming and going at this time. When I returned to the car at 4pm in the then empty car park, my car had been reversed into and the front damaged by what must have been a vehicle with a tow bar. There was no note left with details or a contact. The college said they would put the information on their Facebook page but so far no luck. From 1974 Roundup became one of the most widely used herbicides. It’s estimated over nine million tonnes of Roundup have been sprayed on fields worldwide. Farmers in 2014 sprayed enough of the chemical to cover every acre of cropland in the entire world with nearly 250g of the herbicide, according to a 2016 study published in ‘Environmental Sciences Europe’. Studies have linked glyphosate to cancer, kidney failure, chromosomal damage and immune system damage. When combined, all the chemicals found in Roundup (which includes the adjuvants) are 1,000 times more toxic than glyphosate on its own. Now a new meta-analysis from the University of Washington is showing that exposure to it raises your cancer risk by 41 per cent. The University of Washington analysis included a 2018 study of over 54,000 participants who all worked as pesticide applicators. Studies on animals were also assessed. The study authors said they were “convinced” that glyphosate caused cancer. As expected, Bayer/Monsanto released a statement on behalf of Monsanto calling the results a “statistical manipulation” with “serious flaws”. Now evidence is growing that glyphosate may impact the metabolism, growth and reproduction of aquatic creatures and could be altering the essential gut bacteria of animals such as bees. Studies with bees have suggested it may affect their learning and increases how much time it takes them to find their hives - impacts that could have very long-term consequences for colony health. This was published in the journal Mutation Research. If you are using glyphosate I suggest you get rid of it from your property and so should the Sunshine Coast Council. Richard Giles Conondale

I cannot let Mike Foale's ridiculous assertions re the May 18 poll in the June 5 edition of GC&M News stand unanswered. The Labor Party and in particular Bill Shorten and Chris Bowen flew around the country throwing billions of dollars at some of the most ridiculous projects, eg, $50 million to a private art gallery in Hobart and $25 million seed funding for an AFL team in Tasmania while at the same time proposing double taxation on company profits. I would remind your correspondent of the words of that great Labor elder, Graham Richardson, "the mob will always work you out" and they did with the Opposition this time, for the third time. Federal Member for Fisher Thank you! The recent federal election result nationwide was a terrific outcome for the people of the Sunshine Coast. With a re-elected Morrison government we will now be able to make further progress on our upgrades to the Bruce Highway and the North Coast rail line. We will see more support for Sunshine Coast hinterland small businesses, a stronger local economy and lower taxes for all of us. I am committed to doing just as much to listen during my second term. I made a start at the end of May at my stall at the Maleny Show. I spent two days there speaking to hundreds of local residents and enjoying all the fantastic sights and experiences on offer. The Maleny Show provides a vital opportunity for local young people to see and understand where we get our food from and the care that goes into looking after our animals. Thank you to the Maleny Show Society for putting on yet another spectacular event and to everyone who stopped by to give me their feedback. Mooloolah Valley men’s shed During the election campaign I announced that a re-elected Morrison government would provide a grant of $250,000 to Mooloolah Valley Community Centre to construct a new men’s shed for the region. More than 300 local residents made submissions to the centre asking for this shed to be built. The isolation faced by many older men in society is increasingly being recognised as a major issue all over Australia. Men’s sheds can offer many the chance to belong, to make a contribution to their community and to talk to people like them in a welcoming environment. I am proud that under the re-elected Morrison government, this grant will provide Mooloolah Valley men with that opportunity and I look forward to getting to work with them to make the project a reality.

State Member for Glass House Maleny Show The Maleny show marks the beginning of show season in the Glass House electorate. It is the first show of four that I try to attend annually. After Maleny it’s Caboolture, then Sunshine Coast and finally the Woodford show later in the month. This makes June a pretty busy month but an exciting one where the country meets the city. Devastatingly, I didn’t make it to this year’s Maleny Show. Instead, I was laid up in hospital with a cruel case of cellulitis (that’s cellulitis, not cellulite, to all you comedians out there). Nevertheless, the show must go on and my amazing staff and a number of wonderful volunteers ensured our stall at the show was a huge success. They handed out water bottles and stubby coolers to more than 150 people who completed one of my Glass House surveys. I just wanted to thank everyone who completed a survey. They really help me understand the general feeling around the electorate and the specific issues that are of interest to locals. This helps me to better serve you as your local MP. If you missed out on filling in a survey (and scoring a free water bottle or stubby cooler) you can make the trip down to the Caboolture or Woodford shows.
Parliament budget week Budget week at Parliament is a little different from a normal sitting week. We sit an extra day (Friday) and spend the vast majority of the week debating the Palaszczuk government’s budget. I’m keen to see investment locally as part of this budget. The government could start by delivering on their election commitments of lights at Beerwah State School and a new home for the Maleny Rural Fire Brigade. It would also be great to see flashing school lights at Peachester and Glasshouse Mountains state schools, subsidised bus services to Maleny State High from Mooloolah Valley and Peachester, and road upgrades on Maleny-Kenilworth Road, just to name a few projects. Division 5 - Sunshine Coast Dark sky viewing I am thrilled to share that later this month I will be joining council and University of the Sunshine Coast staff on a viewing of the ‘dark sky’ in Howell’s Knob, just west of Maleny, hosted by Dr Ken Wishaw and members of the Brisbane Astrological Society. This is such an important development in my efforts to designate a dark sky reserve encompassing the Obi Obi Valley, Conondale and Maleny National Parks. Dark sky reserves are comprised of dark, protected land surrounded by communities who have a lighting policy help to protect the darkness and are a minimum area of 700km². In my opinion, most of the nearby sites I have viewed recently will disappear if light pollution is not kept in check and therefore it is imperative we understand the need to take immediate action to safeguard our local points of interest. Stay tuned. Maleny Agricultural Show Who else had fun at the show earlier this month? From the skydiving at the opening ceremony, to the wood chopping competition and my favourite, visiting all the well-kept animals. The 82nd annual show was a great day out for the young and old alike, a factor that cannot be taken lightly given the significant role agricultural shows play in continuing and growing the industry’s legacy with the young emerging custodians of our rural lands. Many thanks to the Maleny Show Society and all those who helped put on another fantastic show this year. And for those who might have missed out, be sure to check out the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show held at the Nambour Showgrounds from June 14-16.

Diamond of a Wedding anniversary
By Lea Parkes Les and Pat Husson of Glass House Mountains celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last week. They sat down to share with me the story of how they met and the 60 wonderful years they have spent together. Les, who is originally from Victoria, was working at St George in shearing sheds when he met one of Pat’s five sisters through attending church. Fortunately she decided to invite him home to meet the rest of her family. Although neither Pat nor Les claim that it was love at first sight, Les was soon embraced as part of the family and within six months they knew they would spend the rest of their lives together. They were the first couple to get married in St
Patrick’s Church in St George on June 6, 1959 and their reception was held at the shire hall with the whole town of St George attending. Pat explained that for a few years they combined Les working for six months of the year in St George then returning to Victoria to work on an irrigation farm for the rest of the year. At the same time they were building a family of their own, which included three children - Tony, Mark and Tracey. Pat said that when the time came for the children to start school they decided to live permanently in Queensland, which saw them make Chinchilla their home before relocating to Brisbane and then,
almost 30 years ago, they came to Glass House. She said that on their wedding day the priest told them that “the couple that prays together stays together” and they firmly believe that sharing their faith and having the same values about life and family has been an important part of their lives. Neither of them thinks there is any such thing as a perfect marriage. They believe that it is important to have common goals, to always work together and support each other, and to provide a strong foundation for your family. They love living in Glass House Mountains where they have wonderful neighbours, and the people are kind and caring to each other. They feel fortunate that they are able to continue living in their home with the support of the wonderful service provided by Glasshouse Country Care.
Les describes their place as their piece of paradise. It is a modest house on a one and a half acre property. Over the years Les has turned the backyard into a parkland and their front verandah has a spectacular view of Mt Tibrogargan. “When we moved here our house became a base for our children and grandchildren and now is a playground for our great grandchildren. “We feel a sense of achievement when we see the strong bond of love in our family,” Pat said. When I asked Pat if she had received a diamond for her anniversary, Les responded, with a cheeky sparkle in his eye, that she didn’t need one as he was her diamond.

Mention the Bronze Medallion and a lot of people will know it’s to do with swimming and a lifesaving award. But how many of our local seniors know about the Grey Medallion? The Grey Medallion is a special lifesaving award created for the over 50s by the Royal Life Saving Society and it isn’t a swimming award. In fact, you don’t even have to be able to swim to get it. It’s a program that helps people to learn essential emergency care and lifesaving skills that could one day save family members, friends or even your own life. Grey Medallion trainer Patricia Barry explained that the Grey Medallion is a free two-day course that teaches participants how to act in emergency situations both on land and around the water. Many older Australians care for their grandchildren after school and during holidays, and many have pools or access to creeks, dams or the sea, so the course also covers safety information for a range of locations. “We also teach CPR, first aid, how to use a defibrillator, marine stings and waterwise skills as, unfortunately, everyone is prone to accidents,” Patricia said. “The course is run by fully qualified Grey Medallion and first aid trainers as well as lifesavers. “People don’t need to be able to swim and you don’t even have to be physically fit to do this course. We teach dry rescue skills, where you don’t even need to get into the water,” she said. Due to the increasing demand and popularity of the course, two courses will be held in Caloundra in July and August. The first is on July 20-21 and the second, as part of Seniors’ Week, on August 24-25. Both courses will be held at the Grand Pacific at Caloundra from 9am-4pm each day. Contributed by Norma McCormak Glasshouse Mountains Probus recently had a wonderfully happy day at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve with near perfect weather and a wide spread of ages present from just under 15 months to over 80 years. There was lots to see on the walk with cameras clicking on a snake, elusive small birds and pademelon families and a lovely barbeque lunch to enjoy. The group followed up this outing with a trip to the Events Centre at Caloundra to see ‘Senior Moments’, an extraordinary show that had us in fits of laughter for the whole time. The actors used very little in the way of props but managed to hit on every foible of older people using words and humour. The audience loved it. Hinterland Kids Under Eights celebrated in Glasshouse Country For more than 60 years Under Eights Week has been part of the annual events calendar in Queensland, and this year quite a few of the local primary schools celebrated the occasion with special events. Beerwah, Beerburrum and Landsborough state schools each held their own Under Eights Day and used the opportunity to invite non-school age children along from the community to join in the fun. Beerwah State School hadn’t held an event for the past six years and they enthusiastically took to the task of bringing in other local community

The crackles were decorated with a farming theme. The kids totally love seeing their exhibits at the show. In the produce pavilion, our Chocolate crackles on display 26
organisations. They had 30 different stations set up to engage with from sport, art and craft, face painting, biscuit making, iPads and reading. The school appreciated all the clubs and organisations that volunteered their time to make this event so great. At Beerburrum State School the annual event included craft activities so the students were able to create little boats and rain makers, and had a nature hunt exploring the natural environment around them to find treasures.

school also took out the Grand Champion exhibit for the theme Farmers - past, present and future. Students helped to prepare three scarecrows with accompanying handmade vegetables and Our school garden delightful hybrid animals of the future. Our future farmer entry was a great indication that the sky is the limit for imagination and innovation for farming in the future. We are happy to report that all scarecrows have landed safely back home in our school vegetable garden and have added a wonderful sense of place to our growing patch of winter produce.
There was also cooking that had all the students hands-on making food for their picnic lunch. The day concluded with outdoor story time followed by a picnic featuring the amazing platters and juice that had been made by the students during the day’s activities. At Landsborough State School their celebration focused on their goal to create Little Landsborough Legends and had plenty of fun activities including a jumping castle, an animal farm, a photo booth, Lego, games and a disco as well as special guests.

Early learning opportunities thrive Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre offers an outstanding commitment to providing an immersive, interactive and engaging approach to early childhood learning. The centre offers a number of innovative opportunities to allow children to thrive including tailored physical education and music programs, the highly regarded Bush Kindy program, a specialised healthy eating program supported by the company’s own kitchen facility and more. Sustainability and long-term environmental consideration are also important concepts incorporated into daily centre practices. The centre actively encourages the motto of “recycle, reuse and repurpose” and works closely with children and their families to promote sustainability at every opportunity. Another fantastic opportunity the centre offers for children in the school ready room (kindergarten) is the opportunity to learn Italian as a second language. This wonderful initiative is part of the Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA) program and stems from the Australian Government's pledge to support language study. ELLA is a fun digital, play-based program that includes a series of interactive applications (apps) aimed at making language learning engaging to pre-schoolers. A national roll out of the program to eligible pre-school services began in 2017 with languages such as Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Modern Greek and Hindi on offer. More than 2,500 preschools across the country have now implemented the program. Last year the centre offered French as the

language of choice and this year the school readiness children are using the ELLA program to explore Italian. The centre’s early childhood teacher, Emma Coultis, explained that the children were given the opportunity to explore ELLA language apps on tablets for 10-15 minutes at a time. Through this, they also learned to share and take turns, as well as the valuable lessons they learned through the games on the app. “The apps introduce children to the polyglots who acquaint children to the magic of a new language through digital play. The apps’ games and experiences have been developed specially to match young children’s interests in areas like cooking, art, building, role-play and music - so the apps keep children engaged through their learning,” Emma said. “I find that the class are always eager to explore these programs and cannot wait to have their turns throughout the week.” A key goal of the ELLA program is to provide young children with exposure to language
learning in the early years so they will be more likely to continue learning languages in the later years of schooling. The numerous benefits of learning languages has been well documented and the earlier children are able to immerse themselves the better. In many states and territories nationally, formal language training with trained language teachers is not available until year 3 and the ELLA program aims to address this gap. Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre prides itself on offering a quality driven kindergarten program to help children to be school ready. Hopes and aspirations In recent months, I have noticed the development of a new housing estate near the western outskirts of our Glass House Mountains township. It is interesting to visualise new houses being built there and future families turning them into homes as they move into the area. I wonder what hopes and aspirations they might have for their future as they settle into their new homes. We recently had our federal election and I, like most Australians, look forward to a stable economy and good governmental leadership that has the majority of Australians’ best interests at heart. As I write today, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) dropped the cash rate for the first time in a long time by a quarter of a percent. I gather that, setting aside the many reasons why the RBA made their decision, the bottom line result is that they are trying to create a stable economy – a stable environment for as many Australians as possible. God willing, these recent changes will enable more Australians to fulfil the hopes and aspirations they hold for themselves and their families. All levels of

Beetroot juice a bloody good boost for arteries A shot of beetroot juice can boost blood flow, reduce arterial stiffness and boost nitrate absorption nine-fold, a study from the University of the Sunshine Coast has found. And that’s good news for those hoping to avoid cardiovascular disease. Lead author, USC lecturer in clinical exercise physiology Meegan Walker, said the study of 15 healthy men aged between 60 and 75 years found evidence of improved nitrate absorption and artery dilation after they had taken a beetroot supplement. While previous studies have found a link between beetroot and better exercise performance, this study was the first to measure and explain that effect, Mrs Walker said. “We have known that older people can take a beetroot juice supplement and improve their exercise tolerance, but this study actually shows us why,” said Mrs Walker, who is supervised by Associate Professor Chris Askew in the VasoActive research group at USC. The study was published recently in the journal ‘Nutrients’. Mrs Walker said that despite the focus on men over 60, the results had implications for the wider population. She said dilated blood vessels indicated that the

arteries were performing better with evidence of more nitric oxide. These findings support previous studies into the benefits of beetroot. “We also found the arteries were less stiff, which is better for blood flow and blood pressure,” Mrs Walker said. “We know that our risk of developing cardiovascular disease increases with age and one of the reasons for this is the reduction in our body’s ability to access naturally occurring nitric oxide, so it’s good to see such a clear improvement from dietary nitrate. “Participants only needed one dose to see the effects and it doesn’t need to be beetroot juice, just a good healthy source of nitrate. “A big green leafy salad does the same thing. The added benefits of fresh vegetables is that they also have the ability to reduce oxidative stress, another problem that increases with age.” Oxidative stress is an imbalance of free radicals in the body which can lead to cell and tissue damage. The study was a double-blind, cross-over trial of 15 participants with each taking a placebo for one session and the supplement for another, allowing the team to compare an individual’s results for both scenarios. VasoActive is a USC-based research group that focuses on the mechanisms of vascular function and the development of natural therapies and exercise interventions.

In the Garden Inspiring gardens and gardeners on show Last weekend saw another great Gardening on the Edge weekend and although the Saturday was overcast with some light showers in the afternoon, the Sunday was a corker. If you didn’t get to see any of the six open gardens … well you missed something special, so make sure next year you keep an eye out for the details in early June and take yourself along. The six gardens showcased a variety of styles, designs and plant selections, each responding to different conditions, opportunities and challenges. A couple showed that if you’ve got a spectacular backdrop – be that a landscape vista or a serene lake – you need to plan your garden so that you can take advantage of that borrowed asset as much as possible. There’s no point hiding an outstanding view behind tall trees or not having vantage points and sitting areas to take in that view. Congratulations to all the garden owners this year

Butterfly flutters for citizen scientists Many locals would be aware of the endangered Richmond birdwing butterfly and how special it is that it is still living in our region. Many local groups and residents have planted the butterfly’s food plant – the birdwing butterfly vine – to help sustain the local populations and hopefully grow their numbers. Knowledge of the stunning butterfly is about to be improved with a new citizen science project kicking off. ECOllaboration Ltd’s chief executive officer Cerran Fawns said there had been many unofficial reports of sightings since the last survey ten years ago. They now need to update the records for the past five years.
“The data collected from the community sightings will be uploaded to the Living Atlas of Australia, which gives a generalised map of the distribution and the Richmond birdwing butterfly network,” she said. The survival of the butterfly has been severely impacted by habitat loss and the introduced vine Dutchman’s pipe, which is poisonous to the butterfly larvae. The native birdwing butterfly vine is what the larvae feed on in the wild but it looks so similar to the Dutchman’s pipe that the adult females get confused and lay eggs on the introduced vine, which is a death trap for the emergent larvae.

Sport Athletics star shines Contributed by Sally Joyce The star of the Peachester State School’s athletics carnival, Emma, shone on the day without even being there. Unfortunately, she had to miss the carnival so she could represent the Glasshouse District at the Sunshine Coast regional cross-country championships on the same day in Maroochydore. She took out first place in the 12 years girls’ category at the regionals and she will now head to Toowoomba in July for the Queensland crosscountry state championships.

Witta Tennis Fortunately, Emma was able to submit her times from Little Athletics competition, which allowed her to qualify for district athletics in all events - 1500m, 800m, 200m, 100m, long jump, high jump, shot put and discus. What a great achievement. This adds to the long list of sporting achievements for Emma this year. In March she competed at the 2019 State Swimming Championships in 50m breaststroke, placing 14th out of 44 swimmers. Emma was also part of the Glasshouse District touch football and netball teams and has just qualified as part of the district tennis team heading to regional tennis along with Archie who also qualified. Coochin won the overall points score at the school’s athletics carnival, with some outstanding performances on the day.

Contributed by Pauline Fraley With the threat of wind and cold, Witta Wagtails got off to a slow start against Maleny Racqueteers. However, the later matches were close and ‘warming’. Maleny won on the day the tennis was enjoyed by all! Thanks to Gerry Gabriel, Suzie Billett, Cynthia Garvie and Sonia Douglas. Whistlers played at Witta against Mooloolaba Legends. It was a bit cold and windy, and started with very close games so we were warmed up. Tight games continued to the end. We were a bit short on the games but it was a good tennis. Score was 39-42 games, 3-5 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats travelled to Eumundi for some great rallies and tight sets. Witta was just a little stronger then the Eumundi Echo’s and came away with a win. The final score was 5-3 sets and 42-31 games. The team was Stacey English, Libby Howlett, Jenie Riding and Michelle Macaree. Under sunny skies , Witta Wompoos went into battle against Division leaders Gympie Bronze. This was always going to be a difficult task against last year’s division winners. After a very tough start with close sets and some great comeback tennis displayed by Haydyn and Paula Cudmore, the sets were tied at 2 all after the first 4 rubbers. Witta took the lead after a convincing women's doubles win, to then be 2 sets down going into the last 2 mixed games. Denis Oneil and Donna Kuskopf had a meritorious win of 6/1 and the dynamic husband and wife team of Jim and Paula evened up the sets to 6 all. Unfortunately for Witta the games difference was 5 to the opposition, ending a great day's play deserving a wellearned congratulations to all team members. After injury, illness and travel kept three of our men from playing it was fabulous to have Noel George with us again holding the fort. Sport Easy Find Classifieds The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Bev Sockhill and Frances Harper played an instructive game of association, drawing six all. Ken Woodward, from Headland Buderim club, and Kath Smith defeated Helen Andrews and Ken Barker 15–6. The Range Care group had a lively morning in the wind last Tuesday. Vince Carbery and three players played some games of golf croquet on one half court while Ken and three players played wild and woolly golf croquet on the other, which yielded a hard fought one hoop win to the M and M team against the D and Ds. One excellent jump shot was played and several great hoops were made by all players. One of the beautiful aspects of association croquet is that you can play like a champion for all aspects of the game - the take offs, the rolls, the rushes - and you can have the most subtle and impressive strategies, enough to confound Magnus Carlson (the current world chess champion), but it can all fall apart in an instant if you bomb a hoop … especially if an opponent’s ball is sitting behind or lurking close by. Good players lavish care on making their hoops. Everybody has a ritual. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8am-10am on Saturdays.
