Hi Everyone... In my first column for 2020 I talked about the bush fires and the devastating impacts they have had on our country. I highlighted just some of the local action that was under way to help and support those who had been affected. Well five weeks on, the momentum isn’t slowing down and we have quite a few great stories about both fundraising and support efforts happening in our towns. Sadly at Australia Zoo, due to both the bush fires and drought, they have to expand their wildlife hospital, which is our cover story for this week. Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital director Dr Rosie Booth shares some of her insights with us on page 3. The bushfire crisis has also brought a range of local fundraising initiatives, including the residents of Twin Cedars at Beerburrum who hosted an Australia Day breakfast and have raised more than $2,000, the team from Scooters & Mobility Sunshine Coast are sharing a percentage of their sales this month and a group of locals is also working on a fundraiser dinner at Altitude on Montville. You can check out these stories on pages 7 and 8. Wildlife Hospital expands As a result of unprecedented weather conditions resulting in drought, fire and floods the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital continues to see a worrying increase in patient numbers. So far this year the number of animals requiring treatment has been infinitely worse because of the prolonged drought, which has meant the breeding season of many animals has occurred during a food and water shortage, and the recent fires have further exacerbated already vulnerable wildlife. One of the worst affected animals, who play a vital role in pollinating native plants, is the flying fox. Hundreds of severely malnourished orphaned flying foxes have been transported from fireravaged parts of New South Wales to Queensland where they can receive life-saving treatment. Dr Rosie Booth, Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital director, said that in order to care for the influx of young flying foxes the hospital was upgrading its rehabilitation facility to cater for 350 orphaned grey-headed flying foxes. “We are going to repurpose an existing facility so that it can be a crèche for flying foxes and then commence work to build a specially designed flying fox facility that can help us to offer further care to these important animals,” Dr Rosie said. Flying foxes feed on the nectar and pollen of native blossoms and fruits and are instrumental in the conservation of our environment as they spread seeds and pollinate native plants.

She said it was important for us to all do our part to ensure we can live harmoniously alongside our precious wildlife. Everyone can help wildlife in their backyards by putting out compost scraps, a shallow container of water and shelter areas this bush fire season. We can all keep our pets inside at night, plant native trees and bushes, drive carefully at dawn and dusk, and call 1300 ANIMAL if we see wildlife in need. The latest Division 5 candidate, Charles Hodgson, looks around local towns and is reminded of the way things once were … evidence of the glory days from street murals depicting Woombye’s Cobb and Co history, Palmwoods' agricultural heritage and a steel art installation celebrating Maleny’s dairy industries. Like most things, over time towns change. Charles says this begs the question: "That’s what we were then, what do we want to be known for in the future? What will be our place in the Sunshine Coast?” Charles and his wife Lara moved to the Sunshine Coast 15 years ago, escaping city life quite literally for the greener pastures of Maleny. “Since arriving, our family has grown with the addition of two boys, one in primary and one in high school,” Charles said. “There is nothing quite like children to focus your thoughts on the future. What opportunities will they have? What sort of world will they inherit?” Charles has followed and reported on council for more than ten years of publishing his 'View News' website and social media channels. Charles has also run in two previous local government elections in Divisions 4 and 5. “Through this experience, I have accumulated a wealth of knowledge of the inner workings of council, where things can be improved. There are challenges facing the Sunshine Coast as we deal with faster than expected population growth, a desire to maintain our treasured lifestyle and environment together with broader existential threats arising from climate change and ensuring

Fact checker for council elections By Greg Brown Have you heard of the ICEO? Not many people have. The legion of would-be politicians jousting for election honours at the March 28 local government elections had better beware. Their comments could be monitored and checked for untruthful and/or misleading statements. The Independent Council Election Observer (ICEO) is a self-proclaimed Australia-first initiative with the aim to promote truth and accuracy in the current local government elections. According to the ICEO, Queensland’s 2016 local government elections were remarkable for the number, nature and extent of attacks on individuals and councils, with social media such as Facebook and Twitter providing, for the first time, multiple platforms on which all sorts of allegations against individuals and councils were made. Many went unchallenged with the undesirable result that many voters may have been misled about candidates’ suitability for office and policies. This concerned the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) so greatly that in 2017 it began the process of establishing an independent fact checking unit. While the ICEO is funded by the LGAQ it operates independently from it. Headed up by respected retired District Court judge John Robertson, the ICEO investigates
written requests from candidates about allegations made on social media and elsewhere. The ICEO charter sets out that it will assess the allegations Retired District Court by making its own judge John Roberston inquiries and using information from all involved - the complainant as well as the subject of the complaint - and aims to publish its response on its website and on social media within two working days of the request being received. The ICEO may also proactively correct statements by candidates or others that appear on social media sites and elsewhere that it considers, after assessment and review, to be false and/or misleading. Where necessary the ICEO will quickly refer matters of concern to the appropriate statutory agency to be formally dealt with. Since starting operations on December 2, 2019, the ICEO has already investigated and made rulings on almost a dozen cases, including one complaint made by Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington about comments made by another candidate. New environment reserve for Landsborough
Sunshine Coast Council has purchased through its environment levy an environmentally significant 65ha property valued at $1.1 million in Landsborough, on Forestry Road adjacent to the Glass House Mountains National Park. Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski said this was a genuinely exciting acquisition that would expand our local environment reserve network in the Landsborough area. “For many years, this land has been locally known as Alfs Hill and was recently proposed to become a quarry. However, council’s acquisition of this land will help to protect the area’s natural landscape and character well into the future,” Cr Baberowski said. “By contributing to the important green frame for the future Beerwah East major development area, with an ultimate capacity of 20,000 dwellings, the acquisition also provides opportunities to plan and deliver naturebased recreational activities such as trails and supporting infrastructure." The property is now part of an environment reserve network of more than 7,000ha owned and/or managed by council.

Award nominations flow Home-grown musical 'A Girl’s Guide to World War' recently received three prestigious Matilda Award nominations for best independent production, the Lord Mayor’s award for best new Australian work and best supporting female actor - Susie French. The show was written by Maleny duo Aleathea Monsour and Katy Forde, and featured an entirely hinterland-based cast when it was performed in Nambour in 2018, then in Caloundra and Maleny in 2019. The Brisbane-based Matilda Award judges saw the show in Maleny last November and in January they announced the show had received three nominations. Katy, who wrote the book and lyrics for the show, was surprised when her phone started lighting up with Facebook messages saying "congratulations!" and she had no idea why. "Then I got a phone call from Claire Booth from Maleny Arts Council telling us we’d received two Matilda nominations," Katy said. "A few seconds later she rang back saying: ‘It’s three! It’s three nominations!’" ‘A Girl’s Guide to World War’ tells the true story of Australian women who set up a hospital on the frontline in World Susie French War I.
“This recognition means so much to us,” said Aleathea, who composed the Aleathea and Katy music and played the Phot ography Luke Monsour lead role of Dr Agnes Bulimba Studby ios Bennett. “We poured our hearts and souls into it – not just Katy and me, but all the cast and crew. "We are committed to sharing the stories of these women with the world and this kind of recognition will help us achieve that goal.” Susie French, who plays the no-nonsense, brilliant lesbian surgeon Dr Lilian Cooper in the show, was thrilled with her nomination for best supporting female actor. “I'm thrilled that ‘A Girl's Guide to World War’ has been nominated for a Matilda award in three categories and very proud that the production heralds from Maleny,” Susie said. “When Katy and Aleathea asked me to play the role of Dr Lillian Cooper, I knew I was in for an exciting time. But it wasn't until I read Katy's script and heard Aleathea's music that I understood how much enjoyment I would gain from being involved in 'Girl’s Guide'. "It is so much fun being the character in a play who calls a spade a shovel and says what everyone on stage and in the audience is thinking. To be nominated for an award for it is just the icing on the cake,” Susie said. The Matilda Awards take place on February 17 at the Brisbane Powerhouse.

Bushfire Relief Donation from sales to bush fire relief By Sonia Clark The team at Scooters & Mobility Sunshine Coast has thrown its support behind bush fire fundraising efforts with a commitment to donate funds from the sale of a variety of products during the month of February. Owner Bryan Hill said the store had previously successfully run flood relief fundraisers and, given the widespread devastation from the recent Australian bush fire crisis, they were happy to donate a portion of sales from their most popular items this month. “We want to help out and strongly believe it’s better to do even a little bit to support those in need than to do nothing at all," Bryan said. “It’s been a devastating summer for many Australians with people losing everything, so the

Places & faces Sharon Schofield from Easton Lawyers
A celebratory morning tea was held recently for Sharon Schofield, practice manager at Easton Lawyers, to mark a significant milestone of 30 years in the one job. While we are sure Sharon isn’t the only local to achieve this, it is still a considerable achievement - especially in this day and age. We caught up with Sharon to find out a little more about her time in the job. Q: How did you first come to be working at the business in 1990? A: I started with John Sheldon and it was the second job I had sent an application for after graduating from Maleny High School at end of 1989. Q: It’s been Easton Lawyers since 2007. What was the business' history? A: John Sheldon commenced in the mid-1980s and sold in 1992. Alistair Charlton purchased it and we were Charlton and Sheldon briefly, then became Charlton and Bain from mid-1992 to August 2001. David Lang purchased and we were Charlton and Lang from August 2001 to January 2004. Then Rimmer Lawyers from January 2004 to February 2007, when we became Easton Lawyers. Q: What was your first position there and how has your role evolved over the years? A: I started as the backup secretary to Mr Sheldon’s secretary Jacqui, and commenced a legal office traineeship travelling down to Caloundra Business College. I discovered early that my passion lay in estate work and drawing up wills, so this was the area I gravitated to.
I have done everything and anything that needed to be done in the office and I basically still do. Q: Apart from ownership, what other significant changes have you seen? A: The industry has changed so much. There are so many things to be concerned about now including cyber safety, hacking, identity theft. This means loads more forms and steps to be done to ensure all is above board. Oh, and we have air-conditioning and I have my own car parking space! Q: What has kept you passionate about your work for 30 years? A: When a lovely client comes in or something goes right, or you get a compliment - and when I feel I have made a difference to help someone through a really hard time. That is why I feel so passionate about estates. It is one of the hardest times a wife or husband or family member is going through and if I can make that process smoother and less painful, I feel like I have really achieved something. I have a mantra I tell my clients: "I’ll tell you when to worry". So, in other words, don’t worry until I tell you that you have to! Q: Do you still have some original clients? A: Yes, I do. I have many clients who have been wonderfully loyal for all of these years. I have formed some lovely friendships with many and have had to sadly pay my respects to those who have passed away. It is the wonderful clients who have been so supportive and loyal over the years that remind me why I am still here doing this job.

Q: What do you love best about what you do? A: As I mentioned, helping people through a really tough time and being able to reassure someone that we can fix it, or that it’s going to be okay. Making sure our firm continues to play a part in the community by providing sponsorships and donations. I have a great team around me and I love the other random things we do including selling my honey and being a drop-off point for bread tags, which has excited us all. By Sonia Clark Parrots in Paradise bird sanctuary in the Glass House Mountains is looking for more local volunteers to assist with day-to-day care of its birds. With 400 birds currently being cared for onsite, the not-for-profit service provides a local haven for rescued domesticated birds, as well as operating a breeding program, grooming service, boarding facility, tours and shows. The sanctuary also hosts a unique opportunity to provide an avian placement program to veterinary students from around Australia. Sanctuary director Dail Malins said that during the recent school holidays they were happy to host 24 young veterinary students and vet nurses who spent up to ten days of placement at the sanctuary. “We had students and vet nurses from Adelaide, Melbourne, Gatton and Townsville come here to train and get some hands on experience with the birds," Dail said. "For us it is a lovely win-win situation as they gain valuable experience and we gain additional volunteer help, which we always appreciate.” Sanctuary volunteer Win Taylor said she absolutely loved helping out and being involved in caring for birds had given her a great sense of achievement

I love being able to go home and tell my grandkids all about the birds and funny stories about what they’ve been up to during the day.” More volunteers are needed for any day/days of the week from 7am-12noon. Duties include caring for the birds, feeding, watering and cleaning aviaries. Assistance would also be appreciated with maintenance, and outdoor or garden work, and would suit seniors, Newstart or work-for-the-dole recipients or those with some spare time who love working with animals. Community Groups Rhyming social start to 2020
The volunteers at the Maleny Visitors information Centre are a happy group who take pride and pleasure in promoting our wonderful district. They socialise and gain knowledge each month with a tour, visiting local tourist attractions, accommodation sites and business. The centre is keen to expand its band of volunteers and is looking for others who would be happy to work as part of a team to share their knowledge of the local area and events with tourists and locals. Volunteers must be prepared to do three 3½ hour shifts a month. Maleny Rotary Club kicked off 2020 last month with a barbeque get together, featuring a keenly contested limerick competition, following a successful year of community service delivery and good membership growth. As part of the fun on the night everyone was asked to take part in the limerick competition, which turned out to be hotly contested and, given the reception it received, a real hit. It was won by Judy Fredriksen. President Sherryl Gregory said she was delighted to start the year on a high and was focussed on making the next six months of her presidency as successful as her first six. Sherryl said she was pleased with the increase in membership, particularly the increasing number of women in the club, and the club’s continued service over a wide range of activities including service to youth programs on the range and support for healthrelated, environmental and international projects. “Our direct community support includes sponsorship and active support of the Interact Club at the high school and Maleny Neighbourhood Centre youth programs, allocation of funds to support the establishment of the Park Run Program in Maleny and sponsorship of a therapy dog at Maleny Hospital, as well as involvement in the Settler’s Green Project along with other service organisations," Sherryl said. Club members have also been involved in the funding and installation of five new bench seats at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, a battery recycling program and participating in the Christmas Street

TO SOAR WITH EAGLES Birds of prey (also called raptors) never fail to impress with their large hooked beaks, powerful talons, huge wingspans and soaring flight. Wedge-tailed eagles are the largest of Australia’s birds of prey, with a massive wingspan of up to 2.3m. Peregrine falcons hold the record for the fastest animal on the planet, reaching over 300km an hour in vertical dives. In the past, birds of prey were vilified, as farmers considered them a threat to stock. Recently, however, it has been realised that raptors play a vital role in keeping ecosystems balanced. They control species that can cause an imbalance in ecosystems when their populations become too high. These include pest species such as insects, rodents and rabbits, which can potentially destroy crops. The 24 species of diurnal raptors found across Australia belong to two orders: the Falconiformes (falcons and kestrels) and Accipitriformes (eagles, hawks, kites, harriers, ospreys and goshawks). Owls (Strigiformes) are nocturnal raptors, with 11 species calling Australia home. Some raptor species have specific habitat requirements. Eastern ospreys (pictured) and white-bellied sea eagles favour coastal environments, feeding primarily on fish. Forested areas are preferred habitats for collared sparrowhawks, brown goshawks and grey goshawks. Most falcons require open fields and grasslands to hunt, including the smaller kestrels and the black-shouldered kite. Known as ecological barometers, many of these apex predators have low reproductive rates and low population densities, and thus are very sensitive to changes in the environment, such as climate change, destruction, degradation and alteration of habitat, and increases in pesticides and pollution.

The Beerwah CWA is hosting a sewing bee this Saturday, February 15 to help wildlife carers from WILVOS (Wildlife Volunteers Association Inc) at their hall in Simpson Street, Beerwah from 9am–12noon. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to sew – there will be other jobs like cutting and ironing. If you can crochet, patterns will be available for crocheting nests for baby birds. The sewing bee aims to make simple pouches and, for more experienced sewers, WILVOS has requested covers for rescue baskets. Carers rely on these basket covers to keep wildlife calm and safe, so they're always in high demand. This is a chance to help those that are helping our vulnerable Australian wildlife. Responding to this summer’s bush fires
I know from my recent listening posts in Maleny, Glass House Mountains, Landsborough and Mooloolah Valley that many people in the hinterland are concerned to make sure the federal government is doing enough to help fight this summer’s devastating bush fires and to support affected communities. I therefore want to take this opportunity to make sure you have all the information you need. The Morrison government has worked closely with state and territory governments to provide all the necessary resources both to fight the bush fires and to ensure individuals and communities get the support they need to recover, including here on the Sunshine Coast. As the fires raged, we deployed 6,000 ADF personnel, including 3,000 reserves, to support firefighters in the field. This created the largest mobilisation of the ADF for disaster relief in Australia since 1974. For the firefighters we provided up to $6,000 each to replace income lost during their volunteer service and invested $20 million towards the leasing of more firefighting aircraft. The government has created a $2 billion national bushfire recovery fund that will ensure the families, farmers and business owners hit by these fires get the support they need to recover. We have made payments of $1 million each to the 43 most impacted local councils, including Sunshine Coast Council, to help rebuild vital infrastructure like roads and utilities. To help affected individuals get back on their feet we have given immediate, nonmeans tested disaster recovery payments of $1,000 for eligible adults and $800 for children, totalling more than $68 million so far. For affected farmers, already so hard hit by drought, we have given grants of up to $75,000 each to help them rebuild. I know that many people in the hinterland are worried about the impact on wildlife. We are investing $50 million in immediate action to protect affected animals and plants and restore habitats. We have already consulted with Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital to help out. Finally, I know how vital tourism is to our region and how badly these fires have affected that industry. The government is investing $76 million in support of tourism, to rebuild vital infrastructure and encourage holiday makers at home and overseas to visit fire-affected regions including ours. Please rest assured that these measures are only the beginning. If more is needed in the weeks and months to come, then the government will release more funds and ensure that everyone is getting the assistance they need. Thank you to everyone who signed my petition calling on the state government to review or reverse its snub of Maleny Dairies for a Metro North Health and Hospital Services dairy tender. Sadly, the government has voted to allow a multinational corporation to keep the Queensland Health supply contract – even after that same company axed 47 Queensland workers. Hours after I tabled the petition in Parliament, Lactalis announced it was closing its Rockhampton factory, with the loss of 47 jobs. The company is also scaling back production at its South Brisbane factory meaning yoghurt will now come from Tasmania or Victoria. The company’s decision made a further mockery of the government’s Buy Queensland policy. Perhaps it should be renamed the Bye Bye Queensland policy. I and the LNP will continue to advocate for Queensland owned and operated companies such as Maleny Dairies.

State Member for Caloundra Waterway authority for the Pumicestone Passage I have written before about the importance of the Pumicestone Passage and its catchment. We live in close proximity to an environmentally significant body of water that is home to turtles, dugongs, more than 350 species of migratory birds and an estimated 65 endangered, vulnerable or near threatened species. Whether we live in Caloundra, Beerwah, Landsborough, Mooloolah or Glenview, the Pumicestone Passage belongs to us and each of us should have a role as its custodians. I believe we need more local involvement in how the passage is managed. Local people with local understanding who know and love the passage can provide incredibly beneficial insights into how we can enjoy the passage in an ecologically sound manner. Imagine local 'scientists' and school groups providing information, assisting in how this magnificent body of water should be both used and protected. We should discuss the need for a local waterway authority. Highlighting the sheer size of the passage’s catchment, while perhaps repetitive, is a necessary step in empowering us to become part of the conversation about its future health, even if we live inland. While those in the community who live beachside may see the day-to-day happenings on the water, everyone, including those who own land along the creek network that feeds into the passage, have local wisdom we need. While you might recognise the passage as the body of water that sits between Bribie Island and the mainland, its entire catchment encompasses a total area of 784km2, with water from as far away as the D’Aguilar Ranges making its way to the surrounding beaches using a network of creeks. Every one of these creeks, as well as the land surrounding them, impacts the health of the passage. The entire catchment has social, economic and environmental links to communities well into Caloundra’s hinterland, with many residents enjoying the passage for work and play. Therefore, we must understand that what we do, irrespective of where we live or work, can have an enormous downstream effect on this waterway. Why not consider a local waterway authority? While understanding the importance of protecting this waterway and acknowledging the significant role the passage plays in local tourism and the lifestyle people moved here for, there is a role for such an authority. Hinterland Families Peachester preps
An adventure with Maggie and Eric Discover the hinterland towns of Maleny, Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton through the eyes of Maggie the Magpie Goose and Eric Echidna – two characters that appear in the new picture book for children called ‘Arriving Home’. Written by Mapleton author Marg Gibbs, the story features Australian animals and the themes of belonging, home, friendships and community. In the beginning, Maggie leaves her travel journal behind. Eric suggests they make new memories. Arriving home from a trip to Italy, they visit the Maleny Showground to browse the stalls and buy Maleny cheese and honey. From old rusty tractors to sweet pancakes with friends, the two delightful animals visit places that bring happy memories. The book is beautifully illustrated by nine women from Mapleton Art and the book teaches children about nature, a range of native animals and the special places on the Blackall Range. With the Australian wood duck, to the marbled velvet gecko and northern hairy-nosed wombat, ‘Arriving Home’ appeals to children aged 3-7 years and their families. Peachester State School has welcomed its largest intake of prep students for some years, with 24 new students enrolled. Principal Kim Fillery said the school had welcomed many new families to all grades at Peachester School and looked forward to getting to know them all this year. “Because the school has grown so much in the past year, they are also getting to know a number of new staff members too," Kim said. “Peachester is a growing area and a lot of families have decided to move here because of the education their children receive at our school.” One of the highlights of the prep students' first week was bringing their teddies for a popcorn picnic in one of the school’s outdoor classrooms. The school’s senior students take pride in being ‘big buddies’ through the mentoring program where they are buddied up with prep students to help them in the playground and enjoy friendships with the older children.

Thank you to Jason Carmichael for your letter in last week's GC&M News about Glass House Mountains District Park. I feel strongly about developing great parks because I believe people need places to spend time and socialise where they aren’t just “walking wallets” – as good as shopping centres are, they cannot build communities. When I was first elected, that land was privately owned and a significant portion was set to become a development site. When several members of the community approached me with the idea of purchasing the land for a park and nature reserve, I completely agreed that would be a much better outcome for the community. I fought and won a close vote in council to make it happen. The park has become a great destination for families. I’ve heard from very many Glass House residents now who are delighted with it. I am looking forward to developing a great program of events there in the coming years to continue building connections in Glass House. I would like to address some of your concerns. You said that you were told council was considering draining one of the ponds. I have certainly never heard that idea. The ponds are an important part of the park’s ecosystem and I would never let that happen. You also raise several concerns about environmental impacts. I want to reassure you that council’s environmental staff has been strongly involved in the process, and the park and adjacent reserves have been designed and built to progressively enhance the ecology over time. I look forward to many further park upgrades over the next few years - the next stages of Turner and Skippy parks, and smaller parks like Settlement Park and Newton Park - and especially working with the community to design and deliver Peachester’s new park. So many times we have heard the phrase “it’s a state or federal issue”. Our council representatives need to work constructively with all levels of government, no matter which party, in order to achieve the best outcomes for the community. After all, they are elected to represent and be the voice of the people! Re: We want better
We too were very disappointed with the Glasshouse Country Carols. I do not usually give negative feedback via social media but the day after the carols I submitted feedback on the carols’ Facebook page, as did other people. The reply stated the new format was to be inclusive of our new more diverse community. Where does the song about coffee fit into that? I am all for diversity but my kids are eight and nine years old - they want to sing along to Christmas carols, see Santa and be entertained. We too waited, and waited, for the laser show and 20 minutes after its advertised show time we queried when it would start and were told it had been cancelled the night before, but no one had inform the attendees. It is noted that all Facebook comments following the carols have been deleted. I will be taking up the responder’s suggestion of attending a different carols event from now on, as it was reinforced the new format was here to stay. It is important that readers are aware of a recent result in the Federal Court in which Centrelink suffered a significant setback that could affect many people in our community. The decision relates to the infamous 'robodebt' system used by Centrelink to establish overpayments to Centrelink recipients and to collect the supposed debt by confiscating tax refunds and raiding bank accounts. The Federal Court has recently found that the debt of a plaintiff was unlawfully established by Centrelink and subsequently unlawfully collected by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). A woman who had a debt of more than $2,900 raised against her won her case against Centrelink. Essentially, the court found that there was no basis for the original decision made by Centrelink and later by the ATO to establish and collect the supposed debt. Justice Jennifer Davies found that based on the information available, the decision maker "could not have been satisfied that a debt was owed in the amount of the alleged debt". The judgement said "the demand for payment of an alleged debt... was not validly made" and that garnishing the plaintiff's tax refund was "not a lawfully issued notice". The Senate has passed a motion calling on the Morrison government to explain what legal advice it has relied upon in relation to robodebt and a

Many older Australians are missing the chance to get vaccinated against shingles as only about a third of 70 year olds have had the free vaccination for this relatively common disease. Professor Kristine Macartney, director of the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance, said people aged 85 and above had a 50% chance of developing shingles. The vaccine is free for people aged between 70 and 79 years. It reduces the risk of shingles by more than 50% and makes cases that do occur less severe. “Most older Australians have had chickenpox at some point in their life and shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is caused by a reactivation of the chickenpox virus in the body, usually many years later,” Professor Macartney said. “Someone with shingles experiences a rash, often with pain that can develop into long-lasting, difficult-to-treat nerve pain.

“The vaccine reduces the risk of this long-term pain,” she said. The vaccine has a good safety record in Australia but should not be used by people with a lowered immune system. A new non-live shingles vaccine, not part of the free National Immunisation Program, may potentially be used for people with a lowered immune system. Being a gardener can be serious business but sometimes you just need to relax. Here’s some fun garden-based facts, courtesy of Yates (www.yates.com.au). A sunflower is not just one flower. Both the fuzzy brown centre and the classic yellow petals are actually 1,000–2,000 individual flowers, held together on a single stalk. There are more microorganisms in one teaspoon of soil than there are people on Earth. That fact might make you uncomfortable but microbes are important for keeping your soil full of nutrients. Plants really do respond to sound. Talking to plants to help them grow is a well-known old gardeners’ tale but studies have shown vibration (like music, or perhaps even the sweet sound of your voice) can affect plant growth. Butterflies might be more attracted to your weeds than your flowers. Colourful blooms aren't the chief reason these insects love your garden – it's more about the fragrance and nectar. According to the Smithsonian Institute, new cultivars of popular flowers have been bred for enhanced colour and size but have often lost their fragrance in the process. Choosing heirloom flower seeds can get butterflies to also fly your way. Some of your favourite fruits are actually in the rose family. Apples, peaches and pears, cherries, raspberries, strawberries and more are members of the Rosaceae family, making them rose relatives. The right orchid combination can smell like your favourite dessert. Did you know that the vanilla bean comes from an orchid? And it's not the only sweet-smelling kind - one smells like chocolate, another smells lemony and one even has a cinnamon scent. The world's tallest-growing tree is the coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), which grows along the Pacific Coast of the United States, mainly in California. Interestingly enough, it's not the world's oldest-growing tree. That award goes to a bristlecone pine (Pinus aristata). What is the fastest growing woody plant in the world? Bamboo! It can grow 90cm in a single day. During the 1600s, tulips were so valuable in Holland that their bulbs were worth more than gold. The craze was called tulip mania, or tulipomania, and caused the crash of the Dutch economy. What do vanilla and corn have in common? Vanilla comes from the pod of an orchid. Though the pods are called vanilla ‘beans’, they're more closely related to corn than green beans. The word pineapple comes from European explorers who thought the fruit combined the look of a pine cone with flesh like that of an apple. Pineapples are the only edible members of the bromeliad family.

We are also encouraging existing and new members to bring along a plant to share and discuss. For February our plant is a hibiscus. If you have none, then bring along one of your favourite plants. A few members showed off their collections of coleus and shared cuttings. There were a lovely variety of leaf shapes and colours. Our next meeting is also the AGM, which will be held on Thursday, February 20 at 9.30am at Peachester Hall. Make a note in your diary for Saturday, March 21 to visit the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild’s open day at the guild’s two big sheds adjacent to the Montville sporting field and tennis court. The open day will be from 9am-1pm and there will be something for everyone including a second-hand tool sale, timber sales and items made by Woodies for sale. There will also be displays of milling timber, wood turning demonstrations, pyrography (burning images into wood), scroll sawing and wood carving. Glass Housing 55 is a small community group seeking people interested in being involved in a project aimed at creating local solutions for women aged over 55 experiencing housing distress in Glasshouse Country. Maleny Showground will be full of all things motorcycles on Saturday, March 14 when the Sunshine Coast branch of the Historical Motorcycle Club returns to hold its 27th annual swap meet. This one is all about motorcycles so anything offered must be motorcycle related and can range from parts, complete motorcycles, clothing, riding gear, tools and tyres, and the list goes on. If you want to attend and have a look it will cost you $5. If you want a stall, it will cost $5 as well. If you want to stay overnight you can camp on the Friday or Saturday night for $5 per person per night. Sisters head to New Zealand Contributed by Chris Bell Norah Malan, who was confirmed with her family early last year, is a valued member of the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church congregation who helps with the data projector and with child minding during the services, as well as being a good taste tester for the variety of food at morning tea time. Nora is heading to New Zealand boarding school St Margaret's College in Christchurch to start grade 8. Norah's older sister Savannah has just completed her recreational pilot's licence over the past school holidays and is heading into her second year of university in Dunedin in NZ, studying a degree in health science with the

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Sarah Widin and Ken Barker played on Thursday, January 30 with Ken having a couple of lucky breaks to win 14–2. Gillian Bradley managed to get ahead in a game of ricochet against Sally Adams and Bev Sockhill winning 12–7. On Sunday, February 2 with the weather hot but a cool breeze blowing across the lawn, Nick Cram and Wallace Roy beat Helen Andrews and Donna Manning 13–4 in a game of association croquet. Ken played in the Gibson Medal on the weekend with mixed results but went away happy. He would like to thank the hosting clubs of Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach and Coolangatta as well as John Hardy for the organisation of the event. Troy McCallum from Bundaberg won the event with Dave Luxmore (BHPB) runner up. Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions with accredited coaches in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

Dr Axell graduated from the prestigious Monash University in Melbourne with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 2010. Dr Axell worked and gained experience in many fields including Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Plastic and General Surgery. In 2012 Dr Axell was invited to move to the Gold Coast and work as a surgical doctor at Gold Coast and Robina Hospitals. Soon after, Dr Axell founded his aesthetic practice, focusing primarily on Non-Surgical Cosmetic medicine and specialising in cosmetic injectables for wrinkle correction, volume replacement in cheeks and lips. His aim is to help patients achieve a natural and rejuvenated appearance by using the latest proven techniques and procedures. Known for his warm demeanour as well as his excellent aesthetic eye and precise injecting skills, Dr Axell can prescribe and deliver many treatments, including: • Fat dissolving injections for double chins
