Lights out across the Hinterland

THE Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay region suffered a detrimental power outage on December 1, leaving some Beerwah and Glasshouse residents without power for up to 48 hours. Electricity in residential areas was affected, as well as traffic lights and services forcing the closure of businesses such as Beerwah Hotel and Club Glasshouse. The outage was caused by a super cell storm, which hit towns from Caboolture to Nambour. The storm cell hit the region with heavy rain, large hail and strong winds. Several residents also reported losing a substantial amount of food from their fridge due to the extended outage. Energex were contacted for comment but did not respond. kirra@gcnews.com.au

Cost of living community crisis Neighbourhood Centres report ER increase By Sonia Isaacs A NEW community survey commissioned by Beyond Blue has found financial pressures are the number one stressor for people as we head towards the end of the year. This pressure is definitely being felt in our communities with local neighbourhood centres indicating more and more people are finding it hard to make ends meet as the cost of living and affordable housing crisis intensifies here on the Sunshine Coast.

Madonna Hampson from the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, said people were feeling the impact more than ever. She said speaking with team members at the centre, volunteers had noticed that community needs have continued to increase. She said, for example more people had been accessing the free pantry and freezer food service at night time. Madonna said she was also seeing an increasing number of people now who hadn’t previously used the pantry before as a necessary way to tide

them over until payday. “Our Emergency Relief (ER) statistics show a shortage of affordable housing; with many people couch surfing, living in their cars, staying with friends or staying in tents/swags at the local showgrounds and parks. Rentals are in demand and the asking price for a modest dwelling is expensive and out of reach for many people in our area,” she said. Shirley King, who runs the free Landsborough neighbourhood pantry, said the cost of living crisis was affecting everyone. She said people were definitely “doing it tough” and she offered assistance where possible for people in the short term, however, for longer term relief and vouchers, she suggested

We are seeing a lot

more homeless, sleeping in cars and caravans because they just could no longer afford rent and price rises,” Ann said. Julie Clark from Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre said for a relatively small centre, volunteers had also noticed an increase of people accessing food and personal items. “Generally people are saying they are finding it very tough right now. The cost of living and particularly the cost of rentals. To hear that people have to choose between paying their rent or putting food on the table - you just can’t quite believe what people are having to go through,” Julie said.

FROM THE EDITOR Mitch Gaynor THE decision of the Sunshine Coast Council to unilaterally scrap the traditional Australia Day Awards and replace them with the UNESCO Biosphere Community Awards was met with just a little scepticism by readers. One reader got to the nub of the issue: “Please go ahead and celebrate the success of the UNESCO Biosphere recognition but not at the expense of Australia Day.” (p14-15) Another stated: “Why could our local councillors not get off their bums and explain the ideas before simply taking the Machiavellian step of deciding to dump a muchloved and valued Australian tradition in a closed meeting?” Another reader sought clarification of the “greenwashing gibberish”: “So any area that is not recognised as a centre of excellence by UNESCO as being naturally beautiful, is not a biosphere, even though life exists

A second Biosphere body is the “Advisory Group”. This group of volunteers explicitly consists of people representing the broad range of interests and across our community. We asked who was in this group but the council didn’t answer. Apparently some of those in the group aren’t able to be publicly identified anyway. Seriously. How are we meant to understand how our community is being represented in this group? For something that is meant to be so transparent, collaborative, and for the good of the community you’d think Mitch there’d be a little less secret squirrel.

The Sunshine Coast Biosphere governance includes a committee that aims to reflect the community. Well with seven of the 11 members either councillors or council staff, it certainly reflects the council. On the committee five are councillors, including the mayor,

Glasshouse police blitz nabs 27 SUNSHINE Coast District Tactical Crime Squad has charged 27 people with 35 offences following a road safety blitz on the Bruce Highway through the Glass House Mountains on Wednesday, December 6. Officers conducted 794 roadside breath tests, 45 roadside drug tests and issued 25 traffic in-fringement notices (TINs) as part of Operation Lasso. Of this, five drivers were drink drivers and 11 drivers were driving under the influence of drugs. A 47-year-old Caloundra West woman was charged with two counts of possess dangerous drugs and one count each of possess utensils, relevant substances and anything used in the commission of crime. Sunshine Coast Superintendent Craig Hawkins said motorists could expect “a heavy police presence on highways and roads, maintaining a highly visible presence for motorists”. “Officers will be targeting drivers that engage in risk-taking behaviours such as drink and drug driving, speeding, mobile phone usage (and) failure to wear a seatbelt.”

Wayne said he believed he could be the leader the region needed, and had the skills, insight and capacity to offer and deliver the change that mattered to the people and communities of the region. “I know what I can deliver and I’ve delivered a lot of complex outcomes working across a diversity of business, government, charities and not for profit organisational management sectors. There’s no denying that being the mayor of the Sunshine Coast Council is not a small enterprise, however, it is about skills, experience and focus, and bringing the right lens to the job. I’ve got the passion and purpose and the skills and experience that can bring that to light,” he said. The businessman,

well known across the Hinterland for his role as volunteer director of the Rangebow Festival, said it was very important to have a clear and defined purpose. He said he believed strongly in values of diversity, inclusion, sustainability and reconciliation, and said these themes were intrinsic to sound decision-making and equitable outcomes for everyone. “It’s about bringing to people genuine engagement on issues, it’s about valuing everybody and the contribution everyone makes both individually and in the context of each community,” he said. Wayne said it was time for the voices of the whole region to be heard loudly and clearly in council and each community needed to be seen and heard for council to be effective in its decision-making. “All the region has something unique to offer, and each community brings something unique and

valuable. What disappoints people is that the recognition is not universal across the region. Someone needs to call that out and recognise the value and contribution of the different parts of the region. We are made up of a diverse range of communities but we can be united in what brings us together,” he said. He said Council needed to be a better listener about what people consider important, however, he said it was much more than just listening to and fighting for people, it was an inherently active role that required visibility, consistent engagement and delivery of balanced outcomes. Wayne said he described himself as an economically conservative social progressive. Duel track on the cards

Planning progresses for new rail line By Sonia Isaacs WHILE state funding for the Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line rests on the outcomes of a $14 million business case due for delivery in 2024, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) continues to progress with planning. This includes updates to track alignment and operational efficiencies for the proposed integrated transport project. The proposed 37km passenger rail line will connect the Sunshine Coast between Beerwah, Caloundra and Maroochydore to Moreton Bay and Brisbane, with the new rail line proposed to tie into the existing

North Coast Line, north of Beerwah Station. Trains operating on the proposed Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line (DSCRL) would continue to the Brisbane CBD and beyond, without passengers needing to transfer at Beerwah. The rail line is being designed as a dual track for speeds up to 160 km/h, where the rail geometry and stations allow. As part of the CAMCOS study, a route was determined and land preserved. The current business case includes a review of this preserved corridor to refine the alignment and station locations. The original CAMCOS corridor included

provision for a single-track rail line, designed to rail standards in 2001, however, this has since been reviewed under the current business case. TMR has confirmed the track alignment has now been updated to protect for two tracks designed to current Queensland Rail standards, and operations and curves have been reduced to enable operational efficiencies, increase rail speeds and decrease travel time. Updated concept layouts have been released for station designs which will see Beerwah station proposed to be upgraded to an interchange station with an additional third platform To remove any risk of possible collisions and reduce any impacts to the road network, this project will not create any new level crossings, and property impacts are continuing to be investigated as part of the business case. Rosetta book appeal ROSETTA Books’ Christmas book appeal has been a smashing success, with the business already receiving nearly double the donations they were expecting. The Christmas book appeal aims to collect donations of children’s books to gift to children in Salvation Army shelters who have been exposed to domestic and family violence.

Owner Lea Dodd, said the original target was to collect 23 books but have now received 42 books thanks to the overwhelming response from the Maleny community. “Books are a fantastic way to escape some of the harsh realities of life and enter into exciting adventures and new possibilities,” Lea said.

Organiser of the ‘Objection to current Bruce Highway alternative - Stage 4 route option’, Jason Smith, asked why it wasn’t feasible to go further west. While expressing support for an alternate highway, which he coined ‘Go West – follow the urban footprint’, Jason said it needed to be done in a realistic way. Using a map, Jason indicated a route that would take in predominantly stateowned land. Jason expressed concern that constructing a second highway so close to the existing Bruce Highway would duplicate the current problems. Another person commented that this would be disastrous in the event of a bushfire; being so close together. Jason also raised the issue of Stage 4 ending at Steve Irwin Way, which has

been inundated with traffic. TMR claimed to be there to listen to people’s views and concerns, as well as collate and present to the planners involved. There was a feeling of devastation among the attendees that the highway proposal was happening in the Elimbah and Moodlu area, particularly with residents in the direct path of construction being at risk of losing their homes. Other major issues which people voiced were the disruption to the idyllic lifestyle in the area, as well as the risk of housing prices going down. TMR said the housing prices would be set at the time of gazetting the land that would be resumed, and also said that nothing would happen for five years. The question was raised that ‘if the prices were set at that stage, would that be what

the landholders would get?’ The answer given was “yes”. Another point raised was that housing prices fell last Friday when letters were delivered to potential houses that could be resumed for the project. With the second option revealing considerable agricultural land would be utilised, TMR claimed that the two options were chosen to have a lesser impact on agricultural land. A community meeting to form an action group will be held at the Elimbah Soldiers Hall on Wednesday December 13 at 5.30pm. Further TMR sessions will be on January 16 at Wamuran Sports Complex, deadline for feedback to the proposal ends on January 22. TMR told GC&M News that it could not say how many properties would be resumed at this stage.

Dead set little champ National powerlifting records are no sweat for Mooloolah kid

By William Robertson 10-YEAR-OLD Theon Koch from Mooloolah recently set three new Australian powerlifting records for his age and weight group at a powerlifting event on the Sunshine Coast. The event was run by CAPO Powerlifting, a nationwide powerlifting federation, and was held on November 18 at the Muscle Hut in Warana. At this event, Theon was able to complete an impressive 100-kilogram deadlift, a 60kg squat and a 45kg bench press, breaking the current national records for his age and weight class. For comparison, a standard concrete or Besser block weighs 13 kilograms. In an interview with

GC&M News, mum, Alana - also an accomplished competitive lifter, talked about how her son has been in and around gyms his whole life. She explained how sport and exercise was something Theon has grown up with and ultimately wanted to become a part of. Theon said he was an avid rugby league player, and his goal was to one day play for the Brisbane Broncos and ultimately go on to represent Queensland in the State of Origin. Speaking with GC&M News, his mum, Alana explained how Theon had initially picked up powerlifting as a way to get stronger and as something to do in the off-season. During the interview, she

Inset Theon with mum Alana Campbell stressed how driven and self-motivated Theon was when it came to his training, describing how he trained three to four times a week in the gym and once a week at The Red Zone, a rugby league training facility in Kawana. While both powerlifting and weightlifting are strength sports with similar end objectives, powerlifting differs from weightlifting which is commonly seen at the Olympics. Powerlifting focuses more on raw strength rather than explosive power. Powerlifting is composed of three different lifts:

QUEENSLAND Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has resigned after nine years in the top job. Ms Palaszczuk made the surprise announcement on Sunday (Dec 10), saying she felt as though she had “run a marathon” and it was the right time to step away from politics. Ms Palaszczuk, labelled the ‘accidental premier’ after taking power from Campbell Newman in 2015, then became the first woman to be re-elected as premier in 2017. She took Labor to a third victory in 2020.

Natoli going for mayor at elections WELL-known Sunshine Coast television presenter and University lecturer Rosanna Natoli has announced she will run for Mayor at the 2024 local government elections. A long-time local, Natoli said she could “no longer stand by and watch the community’s needs being ignored”. “Protecting our lifestyle is incredibly important to locals, and decisions by council impact on us all. I can’t sit on the sidelines any longer … I want to take the Sunshine Coast forward and fight for what matters to us all.” This is a beautiful place to live and I recognise the intrinsic values the urban and rural communities contribute to the vibrancy of the Sunshine Coast, she said. Natoli cited rail to Brisbane, protecting lifestyle, infrastructure, planning for growth and cost of living as major issues. Maintaining economic strength through local businesses and supporting the huge potential of the tourism industry were also priorities.

Unique way to welcome 2024 By Sonia Isaacs RUN Queensland will be launching Sunshine Coast’s very first Backyard Ultra event this New Years Eve with all proceeds donated to a local community activism cause. The Glasshouse Standing has been created to support the ‘Save our Glass House Mountains’ (SOGHM) campaign, and organisers say interest has been strong in this unique fundraising event with over half of the allocated tickets already sold. Run Queensland organiser, Brett Standring, said the event would essentially challenge people to ‘run for two years’ as they race over New Years Eve and into 2024 in a battle against time (and tiredness) to conquer the 6.7km loop within the hour – every hour until ultimately only one runner will remain as ‘the last one standing’. Brett said participants may decide to challenge the world record and run

for four days but he said realistically he expected the event to run for at least 24-48 hours. Kicking off at 5pm on December 31 from the base of Wild Horse Mountain, the event will offer participants a unique but no doubt exhilarating way to welcome in 2024. “This is an incredible way to welcome in the New Year while also supporting an important local cause. This is the first event of this kind on the Sunshine Coast and it will certainly challenge mental and physical fortitude as participants battle fatigue and sleep deprivation, however many of our entrants are pretty tough so I expect it’ll take a few days before a winner is declared,” Brett said. Brett said profits from the race will be donated to the SOGHM campaign which seeks to halt the proposed Hanson Glasshouse quarry expansion. He said as well as raising funds, he hoped the event would also raise

Not a silent night Beerwah Christmas Carols a fun filled affair

THIS year the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre invited the students from the Maleny Primary School (Yr 5) Maleny River school (Yr 4 ) and the River School Early Childhood Centre to participate in the decoration of the Centre’s new Christmas tree. Students were supplied with Christmas timber cut outs and pine cones to paint and decorate. Beautiful decorations have now emerged in the most wonderful and bright colours. The new Christmas Tree was built by Centre volunteer Michael Robinson. His craftsmanship and design will light up the lawn at the front of the Centre. Materials used for the tree were recycled wooden pallets. Special thanks to Poppy in Year 1 at the Maleny River School for her enthusiasm and artistic ideas. They included making the ornaments for the tree to make it a brighter place this Christmas.

THE Beerwah Christmas Carols and Family Picnic was held on December 10 at the Glasshouse Christian College Oval, filled with jolly entertainment. Families enjoyed the Christmas festivities, and joined in on a community picnic, with the audience encouraged to buy local takeout to support Beerwah businesses. The night started out with performances from Masterpiece Dance, followed by sing-a-long Christmas carols brought to the Hinterland by Spilt Milk and the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church Band.

MALENY-Kenilworth Road has seen a whole host of upgrades recently, and they’re almost all complete! The Booloumba Creek section now has a brand new road. North of Lees Road, construction is well and truly underway and on-track for completion in early 2024. At Bakers Gully, the slope stabilisation works are finally finished, which means resurfacing should occur in the coming weeks. And to everyone in Witta and Curramore, I haven’t forgotten you! I know we still need to get the stretch of road out of Maleny sorted.

Youth Crime Crisis – Share Your Story

In 2015 the Palaszczuk Labor Government watered down the Youth Justice Act. Since then, crime has escalated impacting Queenslanders every day and created a generation of hardcore repeat youth offenders who know they are untouchable. Now the Government has convened a committee to discuss the problem it created. If you have experienced the impacts

Greater accessibility

New locally made buggies have joined the fleet at Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World, meaning visitors in a wheelchair can now explore all 23 acres of gardens, lakes, waterfalls and bird life at the scenic attraction. With $25,000 funding from the Queensland Government’s Accessible Tourism Infrastructure Grants, the two customdesigned wheelchair accessible buggies have been added to the existing fleet and will now ensure the unique gardens can be experienced by everyone.

Improving shade

We are committed to providing safe environments within our parks and

playgrounds across our region, especially within Division 5. This includes providing shade over our play areas to improve sun safe play for children, increase the times available to play in the summer months and provide infrastructure longevity. Council is planning to install a shade structure over the play equipment at Mooloolah Recreation Reserve located along Way Street, Mooloolah. Thank you to the Council team for designing a muchneeded shade sail for this well used park. We hope that the shade sail will encourage even greater usage. Works are expected to start in February next year, and should be completed within two weeks, weather and site conditions permitting. Please understand that the park playground will need to be closed during this time to complete the installation.

Changing of the guard as the drums beat louder IS IT too little, too late for Labor now that Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has stepped aside? The pre-Christmas power shift at least gives a bit of breathing room ahead of the next election for whoever steps in, but whether the electorate

will be listening is another matter. Regular change in power is not a bad thing. Incumbency, as Queensland shows, and Victoria for that matter, leads to laziness and poor management decisions and once those leaders go the taxpayers are still stuck footing the bill.

A BIT OF RIZZ There’s many pressing issues in the world but as the year draws to a close, it’s good to see there’s still time to talk about nonsense such as the Oxford Word of the Year. This year’s word is ‘rizz’, which is essentially an abbreviation of charisma.

Kids abbreviate everything, so it’s hardly innovative. To use in a sentence: ‘What do I have a lot of and you have very little? That’s right, it’s rizz.” So that’s Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year. Can’t wait for 2024.

Another annual trophy is the Time Person of the Year, which goes to the indomitable Tay Tay. She joins Hitler and some others considered the most influential of influencers on the global stage. I completely agree with this one.

I FINALLY sat to read the paper (GC&M News Dec 4, Oz Day Awards Cancelled) only to find that the long march of the left has arrived at my door. I thought the Sunshine Council was a long way off this woke nonsense. I guess I was wrong. I thought we elect these people to represent us, not govern. I would like to know as a rate payer: Which councillors voted for this injustice? What council employees where asked and why should they be involved beyond a rate payer? Who are the stake holders who were consulted and what is their underlying interest? Why could our local councillors not get off their bums and explain the ideas before simply taking the Machiavellian step of deciding to dump a muchloved and valued Australian tradition in a closed meeting? Why could they not simply and just as easily hold their UNESCO award on one of the many environmental days, or was the exercise to take the Australia Day awards away, to further devalue what it means to live in this great country? Why was this not discussed at a general meeting of the council? What are they coming for next? One thing is for sure, Andrew Wallace is right. This won’t be forgotten at the next election and stands as a warning to us all to be more involved in how we select our next candidate. Can’t wait! Bryan Fraser Glass House Mountains

Greenwashing

I was amused by your editorial on biosphere(s) and what they are. More than 50 years ago, when I was at high school, I learnt that most definitions boil down to the idea that it is the regions on and around earth where there

is life. This includes the atmosphere, the oceans and land. Naturally the council dishes out weasel words, value judgments and spouts managerialese. A biosphere, apparently, is an international site of excellence recognised by UNESCO as an area of natural beauty where people live and work. So any area that is not recognised as a centre of excellence by UNESCO as being naturally beautiful, is not a biosphere, even though life exists in the site. Beauty is in the eye of the UNESCO beholder. I noticed that there was also mention of sustainability in your editorial, which I think cannot be defined. I’ve seen council adverts on Facebook where they talk about developing sites next to creeks, in forested areas and so on, which they seem to think is improving the biosphere. Surely, it might be better to leave the sites alone? So, the Australia Day Community Awards are to be sacrificed in the name of greenwashing and gibberish. It’s probable that there may be three types of people in the council; those who believe this stuff, those who don’t, but see it as a way to further their lot in life, and those who don’t care. Letters and Opinions obviously finite wisdom have gone down the cancel culture path. Happy to accept monies from State and Federal governments for Australia Day awards program, but not happy to acknowledge the history of our great country - or at the very least one view of our history. Please go ahead and celebrate the success of the UNESCO Biosphere recognition but not at the expense of Australia Day. Then to add insult to injury, pretend that consultation with ‘internal and external stakeholders’ with obviously vested interests speak for the nearly half million residents. COP28 a joke

Over 80,000 politicians, bureaucrats and the rich and famous have flown to Dubai for the COP28 climate conference from 30 November to 12 December, with Chris Bowen representing Australia. As usual many delegates are using extreme CO₂ belching private jets to fly there and back, including King Charles. The hypocrisy of holding

I was appalled to find out that the Sunshine Coast Council is replacing the Australia Day award for the ‘Sunshine Coast Biosphere - Community Awards’. On reading the nomination information on the SCC website, I note it is essentially the same as the Australia Day Awards from prior years. Yet in total disregard of Australia Day and what it means to many of us, the Council in their

this talkfest in Dubai seems to have escaped these people when 80% of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) revenue comes from oil and gas wells with an intention to increase production, yet supposedly they are trying to lower CO₂ levels. Maybe fossil fuels emit less CO₂ over there in the UAE. So far 22 countries have signed up at COP28 to triple their nuclear electricity generation by 2050 now that nuclear power has suddenly been declared a safe, CO₂ free energy source. Possibly they have found that solar and wind generated electricity is intermittent and their energy storage systems and transmission lines make them more expensive than nuclear. Canada is a world leader in nuclear energy because they had little good coal in Ontario and began designing and building nuclear power stations there for their industry back in 1964 when the earth was cooling, scientists were predicting a new ice age and more CO₂ grew better crops. They now export their Candu nuclear power technology world-wide. Our CSIRO has said it takes 15 years to build a nuclear power plant. In Busan, South Korea, 2 ShinKori 5 & 6 APR-1400 power plants are nearing operation after 6½ years construction and Google Earth imagery in July 2023 shows building well advanced. We could do with some of their reliable electricity for our Olympics in 2032. Sel Hopley Maleny

Stadium dilemma I know that it’s all happening in Brisbane, but surely we residents of the Sunshine Coast get to have some input into the outrageous spending of the Palaszczuk labor government, they are spending (our money), taxpayers money after all. Palaszczuk has decided we will demolish the perfectly

good Gabba Stadium, and rebuild it for the 2032 Olympics at a projected cost of $2.7 billion, yes “billion” dollars, and we all know too well that by the time it happens, that cost will blow out to over $3bn, and then some, and now I hear on the news this morning, she has decided that the Lions Football, and the Cricket events that happen at the Gabba, will be temporarily rehomed to the RNA showgrounds, while the Gabba Stadium is rebuilt, but it is also revealed that the RNA showgrounds needs to be upgraded to a capacity of 20,000, before it meets the projected spectator requirements at a projected cost of $150m, which once again, will blow out to over $200m. We already have a perfectly good sports stadium in the QE2 at Nathan, only 10km south of the CBD, which has a seating capacity of 48,500. I concede that it will need some upgrading, but surely it would be far more economical to redevelop and improve an existing sports stadium that already has a track and field capability, than to totally demolish and rebuild the Gabba, and yes, I also concede that the Gabba, and the RNA for that matter, are long overdue for an upgrade. One doesn’t need to be Einstein, to realise an upgrade is more economical than a demolition and rebuild. IN December 2020, David Simpson and his dog set off on his 14ft cruiser from North Stradbroke Island to Mooloolaba. But at 4pm a boat was spotted on a sandbar on the northern tip of Bribie Island floundering in heavy surf. The motor was still running and nobody was on board except a dog. Earlier, Simpson found himself on his boat being battered by large waves. He put the vessel into autopilot allowing him to secure the equipment on deck. Suddenly a large wave smashed into the boat. It lurched sideways dislodging a dinghy that hit him and flung him into the water below. Simpson wasn’t wearing a life jacket. There was no way that he could get back on board. With the boat on autopilot, all he could do was watch his boat float away. In the distance, Simpson saw a tall navigation beacon. It was his only hope.

Swimming against the tide he finally reached it. There was ladder, but he had to wait for a wave to bear him up to reach it. Exhausted, he clung to the beacon. It had saved his life. Darkness set in and the beacon light came on. After three hours a cargo ship spotted him and Simpson was rescued. The Bible portrays God’s most amazing rescue plan for each of us. You and I are part of the greatest rescue story ever. When God sent his son Jesus Christ into this troubled world to save us from our sins. God’s love couldn’t abandon us. He had a plan to find us and rescue us whatever the cost. Jesus is our Beacon of Hope. You may feel that you have been knocked overboard, treading water in a world of confusion without a life jacket. Scrambling to find a place of rest for your soul. Your situation may seem hopeless and helpless. If circumstances,

Contributed by Ken Barker THE year closes. We seek and celebrate the company of friends, loved ones and family, to reflect and reminisce. This has been a good year for our club. We have enjoyed good play, good conditions, and a wide range of socially meaningful activities with the community of Maleny and other croquet clubs within the region and Queensland. Members of the club have built diversity of play within the club by branching out into other forms such as ricochet. They have also worked to improve standards of play by playing in outside tournaments, participating in representative squads, and training as coaches and referees. As a club we have been fortunate to enjoy the support of community and government. A fine example of this support is illustrated in this photo which shows Mayor Mark Jamieson of the Sunshine Coast presenting new “Sunshiney Balls” to Sarah Widin, the president of our club; the balls were purchased for the club by virtue of a very generous grant from the Sunshine Coast Council and are most welcome. Our last major activity for the year was the Christmas party. This was well attended at Maleny Grove again this year, had too much food and more than enough fun to go around. Please note that the lawns will be closed after the 14th of December when we will be dethatching and top dressing. Please enjoy the Christmas period. Tough result for GH cricket

BOTH the tier 1 women and first grade men Glasshouse Cricket Club teams lost over the weekend, and is the last match of the year for the women. On December 9, the men played the Tewantin Noosa Cricket Club, and lost by 30 runs. The opposition won the toss and elected to bat, with captain Michael Eckard racking up a huge 66 runs off 99 balls. Tewantin Noosa finished with three batters left, and Glasshouse captain Joel Owen got three wickets during the innings. Once it was Glasshouse’s turn to bat, Ricky Sawyer scored 47 runs, however, the final score was Glasshouse 10/166 and Tewantin Noosa 8/196. On December 10, the Glasshouse women lost against the Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club by 23 runs. Cooroy-Eumundi won the toss and also elected to bat, with Kaylah Naylor scoring 36 runs, whereas Glasshouse’s captain Melinda Shelley racked up 42 runs. In the first innings, Glasshouse bowler Sarah Berneville-Claye got four batters out. However in the end, the final score was CooroyEumundi 9/114 and Glasshouse 10/91.

Hinterland BMX Club is on track with grant Riders jumping high with track enhancements and new lighting

IN a significant transformation, the Hinterland BMX Club has invested $181,000 over two weeks to revamp its riding track, drawing riders from across the Coast. President Kurt Natalier highlighted the previous issue of flooding due to poor drainage, prompting the club to secure a $81,000 grant for drainage reconstruction. Glasshouse MP Andrew Powell further supported the initiative with a $100,000 grant, initially intended for track resurfacing. However, the club decided to enhance the original track design using the same funds. With valuable input from international racing riders within the club and committee members, an updated track design emerged, incorporating challenging elements to test the skills of both junior and senior riders. “It’s the old track but with some changes that make it more demanding and more testing for riders,” Kurt said. “Some changes which were made include adding an extra jump after the first

hill, and at the end of the track, we changed the triple hump jump to a quad.” While the track resurfacing and design enhancements cost $77,000, the remaining funds were utilised to address another longstanding need—the replacement of outdated lighting. The club invested $23,000 in new LED lights, a significant improvement from the previous ones that had served the club for two decades. Kurt said the new lighting was a significant improvement on the old lighting. “The new lighting is really good, they are LED lights and the old lights would take a while to turn on, whereas these turn on and off in an instant,” he said. The new track has garnered positive feedback, attracting riders from Caboolture, Pine Rivers, Yandina, and Cooloolah. The changes aimed to challenge riders, both junior and senior, ultimately enhancing their BMX skills. Although club racing has concluded for the year, the revamped track remains open for training during the holidays.

Pre-Christmas surprise I HAVE been looking from my office window for the past two weeks trying to decide what I’d write about for this edition. Maybe gardening gifts for Christmas … maybe Christmas tree ideas … or maybe gardening jokes to tell at Christmas (The neighbour’s dog poo’ed in our garden, so my wife told me to get a shovel and throw it over the fence. I don’t see what that solved. We’ve still got dog poo in our garden and the neighbour has my shovel). But then my attention was caught by a striking red colour popping out from the mulch from under some bushes. It was the flower of the Blood Lily or Red Ball Lily (Scadoxus multiflorus) and it makes a surprise appearance this time every

year … and every year it’s just as big a surprise as the last. It’s a surprise because the flower bursts from the ground before the leaves do. The Blood Lily is a bulb originating from Africa and is one of the best you can grow for our area. Best in that it needs very little care and maintenance, and it doesn’t take up much space. It’s really one of these’ set and forget’ types of plants. You just have to remember where it’s planted as for half the year, you’ll see nothing. Then in early summer, up pops the big red ball of flowers on a stalk, followed by the leaves. They can be bought as established plants in pots from nurseries, or you can ask someone who has them to dig up a few bulbs from the clump.

Once they flower, they set fleshy berries containing black seeds which are pretty easy to germinate if sown fresh into a seedling tray. But seedlings grown like this will take a few years to grow a bulb big enough to be able to create a flower. Grow them in large pots or in a prepared garden bed … but make sure they are protected from the sun. They really do prefer a fairly shaded spot - but not dark shade - under a tree or bush. If you have children – or pets that like to chew plants – take care as all parts of the plant contain a fairly strong toxin. In their native range they were used to make poison for arrows and spears to hunt animals. Just for laughs A gardener purchased an old, run-down, abandoned lot with plans to turn it into a thriving show garden. The beds were grown over with weeds, the greenhouse was falling apart, and the irrigation was broken down. During his first day of work, the town priest stops by to bless the man’s work, saying, “May you and God work together to make this the garden of your dreams!” A few months later, the priest stops by again to call on the man. Lo and behold,

it’s a completely different place. The greenhouse is completely rebuilt and in excellent condition; the lawns are green and lush; the sprinkler system is working a treat; and

the gardens are filled with blossoming flowers, abundant vegetables and fruit falling from the trees. “Amazing!” the priest says. “Look what God and you have accomplished together!” “Yes,” says the

gardener, “but I don’t think God knows much about gardening.” “Why do you say that my son?” The gardener replies …“Do you not remember father, what the gardens were like when God was working alone!”
