his week I have been the victim of the old saying "be careful of what you wish for". Just a couple of weeks ago I was lamenting how all things must be right in the world as I hadn’t received a single letter before our deadline. So, not surprisingly, this week we have received an unprecedented numbers of letters – which means that, so as not to upset any of our enthusiastic letter writers, I have had to hold over quite a few until the next edition on April 26. This conundrum has got me thinking – what else I could make happen with just a few well-chosen words? Recently GC&M News have shared stories of some enthusiastic locals who are participating in some important fundraising initiatives that definitely involve an element of physical challenge. Firstly there's Neil Collie running 250km in the Simpson Desert (raising money for Diabetes), and then there’s Margot Menkens and three friends completing the Kokoda Challenge (raising funds for the Kokoda Youth Foundation). Well, this week’s story is about Beerwah local Lynda Utting who next month will be heading off to Lebanon where she will ride 120km in one day through the Lebanese desert to raise awareness and funds for the Syrian refugees. While Lynda was researching about the event she was amazed to learn just how many Syrian refugees have been taken in by Lebanon and that there were Refugee Camps located within 20km of the borders between the two countries. Lynda is participating in The Muskathlon, an endurance event where participants choose between running a marathon, walking 63km or cycling 120km. As Lynda was already a bike rider she has chosen the cycle option, and had planned to hire a mountain bike when she arrived in Lebanon. She said she was stoked that when she contacted the company and explained what she was doing, they offered the use of the bike for three days free of charge.

Vacuum Excavation Trucks Each athlete who signs up pledges to raise $10,000 and this money (less 6% admin/ marketing) goes directly to the refugee camps for purchases including food/relief packs, winter preparation packs (e.g. camp ovens), trauma and pastoral care, medical clinics and supplies. Lynda is really looking forward to being able to assist with the monthly distribution of essential needs to one of the camps when she is there and, through the assistance of an interpreter, she will have the opportunity to talk to refugees. Lynda has already raised nearly $6,500 of her total fundraising target and, on Tuesday April 18, she will be hosting a fundraising morning tea from 10.00am at the Felton's Hideway, 125 Storrs Road, Peachester, where she will be doing a presentation about her journey. Witta local celebrates his 100th birthday By Sonia Clark There must be something to be said for a life on the land as Witta local Edward (Eddie) Heinrich Oehmichen gets set to mark his 100th birthday on April 26. Born in Brisbane in 1917 to Willy Oehmichen and Bertha (nee Bertha Katrina Finger), Eddie grew up to spend his entire life around the Witta area. Eddie’s father moved to Australia in the late 1800s and settled in Witta in what was then known as Teutoburgh. Eddie was the third child of Willy and Bertha and had four siblings; Ella, Freda, Minnie and Bernie. The family grew up on Witta Road and the children attended the local school – though due to injuries sustained in a boiling water accident as a young child, Eddie only attended school for a couple of years. At the time of the accident, doctors feared that Eddie would not survive the night and yet happily now he is about to celebrate his 100th birthday! Growing up into a dairy farming family, as a child Eddie would help hand-milk the cows and walk them to their day paddock on the way to school. In the afternoons he would leave school early to bring them home to be milked. From a young age, Eddie had plans to buy his own piece of land and from the age of 11, when he was paid two shillings, sixpence by his father for a week’s work, he saved his money and picked up other local jobs in the area. By the age of 21 he had saved 300 pounds for a deposit on his first block of land.

Eddie Oehmichen on his farm at Witta Eddie would occasionally attend local dances borrowing his family’s Ford A Model car. A strict condition was that if he wasn’t back home in time for the morning milking he wouldn’t be allowed to use it ever again! At 21, Eddie started up his own dairy farm on Tesch Road and a house (which he still lives in today) was moved by bullock teams onto the property. Over the years the dairy business expanded and Eddie and his brother Bernie (the Oehmichen brothers) purchased over 660 acres and held around 12 land titles between them. Eddie continued to milk cows himself until his early 90s. He never married and jokes that that has been his secret to a long life! People wanting to wish Eddie a happy birthday are invited to drop in to his home at 87 Tesch Road on Wednesday April 26.

Time to show your support for chaplaincy By Lea Parkes School Chaplains play an important role in our school systems and each year there is plenty of fundraising required to pay their wages. The next big event for Glasshouse Country is the Glasshouse District Chaplaincy Dinner to be held on Friday May 19 at the Beerwah Community Hall. The dinner will contribute to fundraising required to fund the chaplains’ roles at Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah and Landsborough Primary Schools, plus the Beerwah High School. The evening’s program will include a three course meal, live entertainment and special guest speakers from the local schools who will share some of the students’ stories. Our local school chaplains are an integral part of the support team for many local kids. I was recently speaking to Beerwah High Chaplain Mike Turner and he explained the range of issues and challenges he supports student through, including bullying, grief and loss, anxiety, family problems, low self-esteem, and anger. Being a teenager can be a difficult time for many young people and knowing that they can chat and share their concerns with someone outside of their family and friends can be a real lifeline. School chaplains also provide support to staff and student families. State school chaplains have limited funding from the State Government. The rest of their wages is provided by donations and fundraising events. So let’s support our chaplains so they can be available to support our local kids. 2017 Maleny Show book available now
The countdown to this year’s Maleny Agricultural Show is well underway and excitement is building for what promises to be the biggest show yet, as the Maleny Show Society celebrates the 80th year of the much loved annual event. The free 2017 Show book is now available from various businesses around the Hinterland at all the usual pick up spots such as Maleny Newsagents, Maleny IGA and the Maleny Visitor Centre. For the first time a full online version of the booklet is also available with a comprehensive Owen Gray - Store 2017 entertainment guide and the full Manager Maleny IGA competitors’ schedule of competition events that can be entered. This year’s show book is beautifully laid out and presented in full colour with an expanded entertainment guide. Browsing through the book a number of highlights catch the eye. ‘80 free things to see and do at the Maleny Show’ is a great introduction to the ‘What’s On Entertainment Guide’. Take back the power on energy bills State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has encouraged residents to be careful when looking at discount deals on their power bills, saying that we need to be certain that the deal that looks good suits us best. It comes as a number of recently published reports have pointed the finger at retailers as being the main culprit behind electricity bill price shock. “While the reports look at offers by retailers, it is a very complicated industry and we need to be careful to what we sign up for. In fact, the Federal Government recently announced an investigation into retail electricity prices,” Mr McArdle said. “It’s no wonder people are throwing up their hands without getting the best deal. There are so many retailers providing plans but not enough transparency about the terms. “A report by the Grattan Institute of 13 March highlights many of the problems consumers are facing. One is that people are simply not aware that they have the right to choose who they buy their power from. “But the confusion runs deeper than just selecting a retailer, as electricity prices are often far more complex than the pricing structure in most other industries. Mr McArdle outlined the following issues as ones people should be considering with regard to discount offers: 1. Retailers may offer a percentage discount, not a dollar amount. The question is, a discount from what?
2. Retailers who offer big discounts may set high electricity rates from which the discount is taken. 3. The discount may not be off the whole bill, but only off a part of the bill. 4. Discounts may be for a limited time only and tend to be conditional on paying on time with penalties applying for not meeting the deadline. 5. At the end of the discount period you could be put onto a new tariff as selected by the retailer and this could be similar to the highest standing offer. “Though energy companies are running a business, it is completely within your right to ask them ‘what is the best possible deal you can offer?’” Mr McArdle said. “It is a case that retailers should be beaten down on deals by threatening that you will walk away from them. “It is important to remember that as the consumer you hold the ‘power’ here but it is vital that we better arm ourselves with the knowledge of the fine print and limitation of discounts.” Mr McArdle said there are a number of useful articles available online to help assist in understanding the options, and he provided the following examples: https://grattan.edu. au/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Price-shockis-the-retail-market-failing-consumers.pdf and www.seniorsnews.com.au/news/howto-cut-your-power-bill-right-now-by-at-least2/3154794/#more-replies.

Locals raise over $1,200 in two hours!
By Sonia Clark In a fantastic show of community spirit, local businesses and the Hinterland community threw their support behind a local ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ event at All in One Fitness at Beerwah, raising an incredible $1,200 in two hours. On Saturday April 1, three local mums (our cover stars from GC&M March 22 edition) were joined by another school mum friend and a passerby who jumped on board on the day to “brave the shave” at the fundraiser, held in the fitness centre’s car park. Over 100 people turned up to show their support and the morning raised funds through raffles, spin classes in the car park, a sausage sizzle and activities such as a jumping castle, hair colouring and face painting which proved especially popular with the kids. Over 20 local businesses generously contributed to the raffle and the crowds swelled in the build-up to the main event – the head shaving of the five participating ladies. Uptown vibe alive in Beerwah
Business owners at the ‘uptown’ end of Beerwah are energised about the revitalisation around the Tower Green business hub. The considerable Sunshine Coast Council investment into the precinct, and the diverse businesses that are now located in the area, mark an exciting new direction and appeal for locals and visiting customers. Edge Salon Beerwah owners Jenna and Alan said that Uptown business owners, Steve Moo n, Taz having recently joined the Calandruccio, Gary Gray, Alan Ven n and beautiful uptown Beerwah Jenna Crane businesses on Simpson Street, they are really excited to be moving forward together. “It’s so important to support each other in business, so please, take the time, make the change and explore what we have on offer,” Alan said. Local coffee merchant Steve Moon from Vianta said the diversity of businesses, especially in this area of Simpson Street, lends itself to a very appealing uptown vibe. “Along with the popular Tower Green area, this part of town is evolving into a welcome oasis for all,” Steve said. Owner of All in One Fitness, Taz Calandruccio, agreed that the new businesses and the renovation of Aldi, along with the calibre of the existing establishments, is drawing more foot traffic to the area. He said that the fine base of services offered are working well together, complemented by the strong working relationship of the local businesses. Gary Gray, owner of Studio Ink, said, “Over the last few years we’ve seen incredible growth in Beerwah, from the recent artwork to the overall streetscape appeal. These awards, to be held during Queensland Small Business Week in May, will have a strong focus on boosting the profile of the many small businesses that operate within the Glass House electorate. “In Glass House we are fortunate to have over 20 unique townships and each one of these has a varying amount of small family-owned businesses that survive solely on the support of their local community," Andrew said. “Because I understand how tough they do it, I initially created these awards as a way to publicly recognise their service and give them some much-needed promotion. "These awards will highlight what they are doing best and will remind our larger community that shopping local will stimulate economic growth and local employment opportunities. The awards also acknowledge employees who offer exceptional service. “The 2017 Glass House Small Business Awards will be slightly different this year in that there will not be a separate nomination and voting period. Last year there was an overwhelming number of nominations for many businesses, which therefore were transferred to votes, so this year we are going straight to the voting.
The Grigor family, who own and operate the Landsborough IGA, will this year celebrate 10 years as part of the IGA retail group. Ashley and Casandra Grigor first began their journey as IGA Retailers in 2007 when they purchased Wondai IGA, three hours north-west of Brisbane. As first time retailers they had a lot to learn about the industry and, after three years where they gained plenty of industry experience and training, they sold the business and relocated back to the Hinterland. Since purchasing the IGA store at Landsborough in 2010 they have worked hard to get to know the locals and create a store that has a friendly, warm and inviting atmosphere that people enjoy shopping in. Regular customers will be aware of the continual transformations that have occurred at the Landsborough IGA store in the past five years; however an even bigger and better one will occur once the Deli expansion is finished in the middle of this year.

Australia Zoo is currently playing host to eight beautiful koalas and two cheeky dingoes, helping out their friends at ‘Wild Life’ on Hamilton Island. The koalas and a pair of dingoes – siblings Dekota and Doza – are taking a short vacation south while their home is rebuilt on the island, following the extensive damage to the wildlife park caused by tropical cyclone Debbie. Just like Australia Zoo, Wild Life’s top priority is the safety and happiness of their animals and therefore they were well-prepared before cyclone Debbie. However the bad weather has caused damage to infrastructure that will take significant time to repair, meaning the fluffy visitors will be taking some time to relax further south while Queenslanders up north work to get back on their feet. Community Wild Dog Baiting Program April-May 2017
Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with Biosecurity Queensland is supporting a community based coordinated Wild Dog Baiting Program. Failure to control wild dogs can result in livestock losses, attacks on domestic pets and the loss of native fauna. Landholders have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land and participation in this program is an effective way to help meet this responsibility.

We all made an Easter bonnet to take along and there was a competition for best hat, along with trivia and memory games. Trish put on a lovely morning tea and we all had a good time. Our next lunch meeting will incorporate our zone conference and will take place at Glass House Sports Club on April 19. Our club raises money for the Smith Family and the Learning for Life program in all their activities. Contributed by Gordon Reddeck Our group will be having their next working bee on Tuesday April 18 starting at 7.00am and ending around 10.30am. During the last working bee we targeted a patch of weed called Glycine which is highly invasive and capable of smothering ground vegetation and bushland trees. We plan to continue that task and hopefully fully clear that patch during this session. If there is time to spare there are lots of other tasks that can be done, like lifting small trees that have been pushed over by the wind after Cyclone Debbie, clearing rubbish in the reserve, etc. Anybody wishing to learn more about weed identification and removal, and bushland preservation is welcome to join us. This work is done in collaboration with the Sunshine Coast Council as part of their Community Nature Conservation Program. All equipment required is supplied and tea is also provided. Wear good sun protective clothing and footwear suitable for hiking in the bush. We meet at the Caralan Park Gate. Groundbreaking domestic violence law reforms
Maleny Halfpipe renewal
At the Listening Posts that I held in January in Maleny and Glass House, local people told me loud and clear that they were unhappy with the internet access available to us. Good internet access is essential for people who want to study, work from home, or run a small business. For all of us, it is an important source of information and entertainment as well as a communications lifeline. Local people here deserve good internet access, so we need to get the National Broadband Network delivered as soon as we can. You may know that the Glasshouse Country Chamber are asking for feedback on your internet access so that they can pass it on to me. I’d also love to hear from you directly about your experiences. The more local stories I have, the better I can fight for our area. Please contact me on andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au or phone my office. I am working hard on this with the Federal Minister for Communications, Senator Fifield, and the Minister for Regional Development, Fiona Nash. I have had meetings with all the people who make decisions about NBN locally, and I have pushed hard to get what we need. During the last sitting week of Parliament groundbreaking Domestic Violence reforms were passed due to the LNP’s Private Member’s Bill. Key reforms which were passed in the Bail (Domestic Violence) and Another Act Amendment Bill 2017 included: • Reversing the presumption for bail in domestic violence-related crimes such as assault, grievous bodily harm, deprivation of liberty, strangulation and kidnapping. • DV Alert system to notify victims and families when someone with a DVO is being considered for parole, even if the reason they are in prison is not related to domestic violence. • Introducing urgent appeal rights to the bail application process, meaning bail decisions will be stayed for up to three business days and referred to a higher court for urgent review. • Allowing GPS trackers to be fitted to an alleged offender as a bail condition by the court to ensure that victims of crime are better protected throughout the trial process, which can be lengthy. The Bill also sought to introduce a DV Alert system to ensure victims and families are notified when someone charged with domestic violence crimes is being considered for or has been granted bail. Unfortunately, Labor Members voted against this provision so it did not pass.
I am pleased to advise the renewal project for the Maleny Halfpipe is now complete. The fence was due to be removed last week, ensuring the paint had fully hardened following the recent wet weather.
Queenslanders are a resilient lot and we are used to experiencing more than our fair share of natural disasters each and every year and Cyclone Debbie was no exception. Not only did she cause considerable damage in the north crossing the coast, she then continued to track south leaving further destruction and flooding in her wake. In my capacity as Shadow Minister for Local Government, Transport and Main Roads, I recently travelled to many regions that were affected, including Airlie Beach and Mackay and then south to Logan, Beaudesert and the Gold Coast. Restoring essential services, clearing debris and reopening roads are critical to communities getting back on their feet and I applaud the coordinated work of the councils and other support services to provide such swift responses. The Australian Government has activated the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) which will help individuals with emergency needs as well as assisting local and state government in restoring damaged public infrastructure. Help for small businesses
We have 40,000 great small businesses on the Coast. I have visited many of them locally, like Glasshouse Country Auto Body Repairs and Glasshouse Country Meats. Many are run by local families who are doing it tough, and many are important community facilities. Where would we be without them? Last week the Federal Parliament passed the Government’s Enterprise Tax Plan, which gives small and medium size businesses a tax cut from July. The local owners I have spoken to plan to use the extra money to give their staff more hours or hire a new person, or to buy new equipment so they can offer new or better services. Some are going to get solar panels to reduce their environmental impact. I’m proud to have been part of delivering that, because it will make a big difference to keeping our small businesses open, and making sure there are jobs for people in Glass House, Beerwah and Maleny.
Help with childcare
I have four daughters, so I know how much work kids can be and how hard it is to get access to good childcare. We have some great value providers here but the costs can still mount up. The Government made big changes to childcare this month. The $7,500 cap on government subsidies has been scrapped for all families earning less than $185,000, so that you don’t run out of money midyear. Mooloolah skate facility getting closer Detailed design of the skate park, how it will sit in the Mooloolah Rec Reserve, and a schedule for delivery will be discussed at the next Mooloolah Business and Community Breakfast Meeting on May 4. It’s great to see the funding for this project has now reached around $90,000 including the much-appreciated grant through the Mooloolah Community Association – the youth of Mooloolah truly deserve this support.

Feeding the hungry masses With Spencer and Karen Shaw It’s that time of year when the temperatures start to drop and our native wildlife need to start eating their fill to keep warm and hopefully put on a bit of fat to keep them going through the cooler months. In our last chat, we discussed the beautiful Banksias, Grevilleas and other native Proteaceae which provide great nectar sources for all Rainbow Lorikeets, Honey Eaters (and Noisy Mynahs!). But many of the native birds of the hinterland and coast are fruit eaters and it’s great to plant food supplies for them too. The Mutton Wood – Myrsine variabilis – has an unflattering name, but is a beautiful glossy foliaged large shrub that produces masses of purple fruit in spring. Native Elderberry – Sambucus australasica – is a fast growing shrub that produces masses of small yellow fruit in autumn. Velvet Leaf – Callicarpa pedunculata – is an outstanding shrub that is also fruiting at the moment with masses of purple fruit good for all the small birds too. If you’d like Brown Cuckoo Doves then plant Bleeding Heart – Homalanthus populifolius. The small Psychotria shrubs – Psychotria loniceroides and Psychotria daphnoides – are also great fruiters at this time of year and small shrubs. As always in South East Queensland with our amazing biodiversity, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Plant fruiting shrubs, trees and vines and keep the birds and other wildlife fed and warm.
Environment Australasian Bat Night As the old theme for Batman used to say – same bat time, same bat station. Well, that is if Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve could be called a ‘bat station’, as once again there will be a full night of ‘batty’ fun for the family on Saturday April 22 from 4.00pm-8.00pm. The evening is a great opportunity to learn about our ecosystem superheroes – flying foxes and microbats. At this family-friendly event there will be a presentation by local bat ecologist and author Les Hall, as well as a talk by Lyndon Davies (Gubbi Gubbi) on the importance of bats to local indigenous culture. Bring a blanket, torch, and a picnic dinner and relax under the stars while watching the local flying fox colony fly out of the reserve. For the kids there will be a story reading by Warambi author and Sunshine Coast local Aleesha Darlison, along with a Wildcall native wildlife display, a ‘Bat Cave’ for kids’ activities and an Outdoor Cinema will feature Stellaluna, a film about a baby fruit bat struggling to find her true family. Make sure the kids come dressed up in their favourite batty costume, and there will be prizes for best dressed. There will be a coffee van and barbeque food to purchase on the night. Environmental Education Expo As part of this year’s Earth Week celebration the Sunshine Coast Environmental Education Expo will be held at the Rainforest Discovery Centre, at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, on Friday April 21 from 8.30am to 4.00pm. The program highlights will be a presentation and half day workshop with Pat Armstrong with a focus on developing young environmental leaders. There will also be a program presentation on the Sunshine Coast Council Kids in Action Program, along with a tour of the new Rainforest Discovery Centre, plus local environment education exhibitors. For members of the Australian Association for Environmental Education attendance is free, and for non-members it is $25.00. Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Easter
with Sue Tanner Easter is always a busy time at the reserve. The school holidays see a big increase in visitor numbers, so the new facilities will certainly be getting a work out and the volunteers will be very busy. There are so many interesting things to do and see in the Discovery Centre before or after your forest walk. Unfortunately the café is not yet open but the picnic/barbeque areas are looking lush and green. The Friends are looking forward to the fitting out of the retail section of the new centre. We are planning some interesting new stock so that visitors can buy a souvenir of their trip. A wonderful new edition to our products will be another book of beautiful art works and information about the rainforest being put together by Dr Les Hall. All the stunning art work has been done by local artists, and the book features birds, animals, trees, fungi and so much more, including detailed information about them all, some of which are very rare and surprising. We are very excited about this book and hope to launch it before Christmas – watch this space. The Friends next meeting will be on Saturday April 22 upstairs in the meeting room. Adani Mine makes no sense
Greg Newton (GC&M News April 5) calls for us to support the Adani Mine. But the Adani Coal Mine makes zero economic sense. The project is known to have break even costs around $100.00 per tonne. Yet thermal coal is currently averaging $40.00 on its way to the $30s as global oversupply refuses to rationalise quickly. Moreover, there are numerous Australian projects that operate far more cheaply than Adani so they will have to shut to accommodate it, delivering a truly backwards blow to thermal coal revenues and productivity. Thermal coal is in massive global oversupply. The Adani mine will only collapse its price all the faster, closing more efficient mines in NSW. It will never be built without corporate welfare to support it, and it will trigger just as many job losses from more efficient mines in NSW. To say nothing of the dying Great Barrier Reef, bleached two years in a row now for the first time ever, due to global warming caused by coal-sourced emissions. The Adani mine will only make the reef's death more certain and rapid. Gerry Muller Maleny
Re: Adani Mine
There was so much misinformation in Mr Newton’s brief letter about Adani last week that it would take more than my allotted 300 words to correct it all. Suffice to say, however, that the number of jobs associated with Adani’s Carmichael mine is only 1400, not the oft-quoted figure of many times that. This pathetic number (1400) needs to be compared with the 67,000 tourism jobs associated with the Great Barrier Reef that will be lost should the mine go ahead and the carbon trapped in the coal be released into our atmosphere. If the argument was just about economics this fact alone would be enough to put an immediate stop to the proposal. But it’s not the economic good of Australia that is under question, it’s the assets of some very big miners and energy suppliers. These assets are threatened by the changes we will have to make over the next couple of decades as we move to a more locally distributed energy supply. Never mind that we simply must make these changes if we’re going to survive, these exceedingly wealthy individuals, who have far too much influence over Australian politics, stand to lose and are prepared to do anything to hold onto their power. With Central Queensland farmers more than outraged that Adani has been given carte blanche for artesian water (355 billion litres over the life of the mine) it’s also deeply surprising that a National Party stalwart like Mr Newton isn’t getting behind the farmers and condemning the whole thing. Perhaps he, like many others, doesn’t realise that this whole business with Adani is a vast bait and switch tactic of the most cynical kind: Labor doesn’t want to give Adani one billion to help build their railway line to transport the coal. The money isn’t for Adani at all, it’s so that once Adani has copped all the flak and is up and running, Rinehart, Palmer et al, can get their coal out without having to build any infrastructure. The Queensland Government estimated the life span of the mine to be between 25 and 60 years. Adani predicts the first stage of construction will provide around 500 positions, mainly for planners and engineers. Once operational, it is estimated the mine will provide 2,500 to 3,000 full-time jobs. In 2015, Adani Consultant Dr Jerome Fahrer told www.gcnews.com.au
the Land Court in Brisbane the mine would actually create fewer jobs, a net figure of 1,464. Are there any guarantees these jobs will not go to 457 visa holders? Adani Mining chief executive Jeyakumar Janakaraj has faced scrutiny for failing to disclose that a company he ran in Africa was guilty of serious environmental breaches, despite being asked to do so in a letter from the Federal Environment Department. Environmental opposition to the project is primarily on the ground emissions from coal fuels climate change, which threatens the Great Barrier Reef and the tourism industry and land and water surrounding the area. Fishermen from India say Adani destroyed tidal mangroves. "The Adani project is harming us. Their coal dust and stream discharge are harming us," Mr Mohammad said, "There are no fish in the sea. All living creatures are dead." The Australian Government will contribute over one billion dollars to the project. The taxpayer dollars could be better spent helping the community, in particular our senior citizens, our homeless and our needy. 50,000 tiny homes could be built for our homeless at a cost of $20,000 each. Money could be given to our community legal centres. Money could be spent on creating jobs in renewable energy. Infrastructure in Queensland is sadly lacking. There are any number of areas where this $1.1 billion could be sensibility used. Adani is a disaster for the Reef and tourist industry, our water and our land and future generations. Re: Adani Mine
Greg Newton (GC&M News April 5) claims that the Adani will spend $21 billion and create 10,000 jobs at its proposed mine. Firstly, at a Queensland Land Court hearing last year, Adani’s lawyers admitted that the number of jobs created would be about 1400. Re finance, Indian and Australian media have been reporting for some time that Adani has money problems. Most banks have walked away from the Queensland project and Adani are seeking $1 billion of our taxpayer funds before they commit to the project. All mining activities in Australia represent only 8% of the national workforce so it doesn’t create many jobs in our economy. Open cut mining is highly automated now with driverless trucks and other machinery being remotely controlled from an office in a city far from the mine. Most importantly, coal mines are now regarded by banks and other investors as ‘stranded assets’ which
You Said It will have little future value due to technological developments such as renewable energy. Some local businesses in the region of the proposed mine may receive some financial benefit but large numbers of people are unlikely to gain ongoing employment. Ray Sanderson Glass House Mountains
Ratings stupidity
It never ceases to amuse me when disaster strikes in Queensland, such as Tropical Cyclone Debbie, that we have the Premier, The Commissioner of Police, relative mayors and heads of the various services who attend along with their staff and volunteers. They broadcast to everyone to stay indoors after making their properties safe or evacuate and then we get the idiots from our morning television shows who cannot get to the affected area quickly enough. Ratings is apparently what it is all about. Not only do we see the so called heads, we also see their staff out in the 200-plus kilometre an hour winds hanging onto posts, etc, and placing their lives in actual danger. Not only do they appear to be able to do this without one police officer stepping in and arresting same, where the bloody hell is their ‘occupational health and safety mob’ – don’t they have a duty of care? Trees, power lines, corrugated iron roofs don't give warning, they are airborne and the rate of travel does not allow one time to escape or get out of the way. I could be wrong, but I have never seen a runner yet who can travel that fast on his or her feet. What these idiots do is place the Emergency Services Volunteers lives in danger. Why? Because they are the ones who have to go and save them. Surely Queensland has laws in place whereby these people can be managed, controlled or arrested if everything else fails. If not, then it is about time there were laws or constraints issued. Maybe our local member can start, by standing up and being heard on the issue. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

News Newsininbrief brief Burning program begins HQPlantations have commenced prescribed burning of pine plantations in the general areas of Beerburrum, Elimbah, Beerwah, Glass House, Landsborough, Toorbul, Woodford and Bribie Island. The burns are part of an ongoing campaign to protect adjacent communities and the plantation assets from potential wildfires and arson activity. HQPlantations Beerburrum Operations Manager, Barry Darko, said recent rain and the beginning of cooler temperatures and lighter winds have allowed HQPlantations to commence the prescribed burning program. “Annual summer growth of underbrush requires that we undertake prescribed burning to reduce the risk of wildfires in the hotter months when fires would burn more intensely,” Mr Darko said. HQPlantations burning program will continue through to the end of July, with April and May being the peak of the burn period. The timing and frequency of prescribed burns is dependent on weather conditions, and whilst every attempt is made to minimise smoke inconvenience to residents and motorists, it is dependent on these favourable weather conditions. Barking dog seminar back by popular demand The recent Park the Bark barking dog seminar run by Sunshine Coast Council was so successful, another one is being planned for June. Attended by more than 50 local dog owners, they (and their neighbours) will soon be enjoying more peace and quiet thanks to the seminar hosted by renowned animal behaviourist Dr Cam Day. The free educational seminar, held on March 2, covered real examples of barking dog cases, a look at which dogs bark the most, a key to solve barking behaviour, solutions for “when I am home” barking, and solutions for “when I am away” barking. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said, “If you missed out the first time, don’t worry, council will be hosting another Park the Bark seminar in June. “Thanks to the wonderful feedback we received and requests from residents who were unable to make it to the first seminar, we are organising another one,” Cr McKay said. Council will be in touch in the near future to confirm the date, time and location for the June seminar.
Easter Sunrise Service
For the first time, the Range Christian Leaders Network have organised a special Ecumenical Easter Sunrise Service to be held in Maleny on Sunday April 16 from 6.00am. The service will include Scripture readings by Rev Adam Gallagher from the Maleny Baptist Church, with Phill Tucker giving the music for this Holy day. Pastor of the Maleny Presbyterian Church, Scott Kroeger, said this one hour service is timed to reflect St Mark's scripture regarding the Resurrection: “...very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb…”. “This is a special community event and everyone is invited to join with each other in commemorating and celebrating this most important day in the Christian Calendar, the rising of Jesus Christ from the dead,” Pastor Scott said. The service will take place on the vacant land at 40-42 Maple Street, the space between Maleny Realty and the laneway beside Peace of Green, and those attending should bring along chairs and blankets. If it is raining, plans are in place for indoor shelter. At the conclusion of the service people are encouraged to get their morning coffee and breakfast from one of Maleny's coffee shops that are open for business.

Crack open the truth about Easter
Easter is a wonderful time of year. We celebrate it in many and varied ways. It has become a time to get away with family for a super long weekend and catch up on other things. But when was the last time you cracked open the truth about Easter? Easter is a time to reflect, not on our advancement or our busyness, but on what God has done for each of us through Jesus Christ. Easter isn't a long weekend or a holiday, it is reference to a symbolic historical event. This event isn't just for Christians but for all humanity. Witnesses who saw the crucifixion of Jesus uttered these words: “Surely this is the Son of God.” As Jesus hung upon the cross, He stood in the gap between us and God where our own sin created a great divide. Because of
Christ’s sacrifice we now have forgiveness for our sins and can therefore, once again, be as close to God as we choose. When we crack open the truth about Easter we begin to realise we are loved by God, forgiven by His grace and that every person can receive His gift of eternal life. The Bible says if you believe in your heart God raised Christ from the dead and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, then you shall be saved. Easter is a time to reflect on who God is and the incredible plan He has for each of our lives. As you get about and do what you need to do this Easter, take some time to reflect on this truth. Kids’ hub at Wood Expo
The Maleny Wood Expo, together with Queensland Water and Land Carers (QWaLC), will this year introduce the Junior Landcare Paddock: a hub for kids’ workshops and activities. The idea is to offer a hands-on, experiential ‘village’, inspiring young people to work with their hands to enhance their appreciation of the natural world. The workshops and activities will offer opportunities for participants to develop practical, creative skills and learn about working with natural materials. Kids of all ages can learn from experienced woodcrafters and use real tools to make a Mother’s Day present, a Funky Gourd Bird, and much more! They can try their hand at furniture making at the Cool Stool School, make toys, or create bush critters. There’ll be face painting, jewellery making, weed weaving and a lot of hands-on, away-from-screens, creative fun. The Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild and Maleny Men’s Shed will help junior Wood Expo attendees to make a Mother’s Day gift. Members of both organisations have been working hard to come up with ideas that are easy and relatively quick. There will be templates of numerous items ready for all the finishing touches – gluing, clamping, knocking in dowel, sanding and varnishing.
Funky Gourd Birds There will even be some simple projects for the very little people under the age of five. The young woodworkers can choose to make a little boat (for those under 5), a cheese or cutting board, a key holder in the shape of an animal, toast tongs or a plant holder. There’ll also be a small workshop station, looked after by Gregory’s Machinery, that will offer young people the chance to make jigsaws and a selection of little native animals. The Mother’s Day workshop tent will be available to children from 10.00am to 2.00pm (no bookings required) and it is completely free for all participants, no matter which activity they choose to engage in.

Kelly recently completed his second album ‘Dead End Street’ at Rob McKay’s studio in Hervey Bay, with the help of musician friends including Kevin Bennett. Brad recently travelled to America on a songwriting expedition and last month performed at the Man from Snowy River Festival in Corryong, Victoria. Kenilworth Cheese, Wine & Food Fest Easter Saturday’s Kenilworth Cheese, Wine & Food Fest will showcase produce and producers from the Mary Valley and surrounding districts, with a great variety of food stalls. Julieta is a tough drama Julieta, the 20th film production by celebrated Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, will be screened by the Maleny Film Society on Saturday April 22 in the Maleny Community Centre. It’s 99 minutes long, classified M, and the director describes it as “tough drama with a hint of mystery”. Based on three stories entitled ‘Runaway’ by Nobel Prize-winning author Alice Munro, the film describes how a middle-aged woman living in Madrid comes to terms with her 12-year estrangement from her daughter who has been sighted by a friend at Lake Como. Emotional relationships are explored backwards and forwards through time and exotic locations, tracking Julieta’s adventurous youth as a travelling classics teacher, her love for handsome fisherman Xoan, her mourning – then the unfathomable abyss between herself and her daughter, which demands to be bridged. Almodovar casts Emma Suarez as the middle-aged Emma with her own independent lifestyle and Dario Grandinetti as the man in her life. Adriana Ugarte appears as the young Julieta. The director’s cinematograhic art seamlessly blends the two in a strong drama, accompanied by haunting music from composer Alberto Iglesias. Don’t forget to feed your plants Well, we sure got some well needed rain. And hasn’t the garden responded well to a good deep watering? But did you know that the excess rain means that your soil will have lost some of the soluble nutrients which those bursting-with-life plants will now be craving? Unless you have well cared for soil, containing lots of organic matter, composted organic matter and manures and high natural mineral content, you’ll need to replace some of those washed out nutrients. The quickest way is to apply a balance complete fertiliser – either as a watered in soluble solution or as slow release pellets or a standard granular fertiliser. Take care if using a watered in soluble fertiliser as too much could damage the leaves of the plants or cause ‘plasmolysis’ of the roots. This is where water is drawn out of the plant roots because the soil moisture has a higher concentration of salts (from the fertiliser) than the plant has in the sap in the roots. You will then see your plants wilting like they are thirsty, even though you’ve not long watered them with the liquid fertiliser. Another way is to top up your mulch with animal manures, lucerne hay, crushed rock minerals and a dusting of dolomite and potash. As this breaks down, it will both feed the soil organisms and provide nutrients to your plants.

Our sympathies go to Nessie Pratten and her family for the sad news of the loss of her grandson Cory Pratten recently. Results of the competition lunch for February: Triple tie first - Margaret Ferris, Pam Innes and Patricia Bradford 14 points, Second: Margaret Wallace, 8 points. After lunch some members visited the garden of Margaret Ferris. Margaret couldn’t tell us how many potted plants she has in the shade houses and scattered around under the trees in the garden. There were a lot of other interesting plants throughout the garden grown mainly for flowers and foliage that Margaret uses for her floral art. Thank you, Margaret, for showing us your garden. The Australia National Wake Board Competition was held last weekend at Bayside Wake Park at Logan. Many entrants came from across the country, including Landsborough local Bentley Bland, aged 7, who is in Year 2 at Landsborough State School. Bentley made the finals of the 11yrs and Under, just missing out on a podium position. He has only been wakeboarding for 18 months as a member at Bli Bli Wake Park, so no doubt this will be only the first of many stories about Bentley to come.
San grading
Contributed by Cameron Taylor San Taekwondo held its Term 1 grading at its full time Beerwah centre last Friday night. Gradings are held every term and are a chance for students to progress in rank. All students are required to demonstrate basic drills and poomsae (defined patterns of defense-and-attack motions) as well as show good manners and martial arts spirit. The higher belts are also required to do full contact sparring, break timber and demonstrate skill in defences from different grabs and strikes. San gradings are conducted with a maximum of three students grading at one time to ensure everyone is assessed individually and accurately, and students all receive a marked criteria sheet and individual feedback. San also recently updated its grading requirements to keep increasing the standard of the club. Testing can be hard and students do occasionally fail, but students get to feel a real sense of achievement when receiving a new belt. Friday saw 48 students attend grading from the Kenilworth, Beerwah and Maleny clubs. Notably, Aaron Lerch successfully graded for and achieved his 1st Dan (first degree black belt), which has been the result of 5 years of training. The Best Grading award for the White and Yellow Belt grading was awarded to Myles Owen, and for the Blue, Red and Black Belt grading, it was won by Aaron Lerch. Contributed by Pauline Fraley A tight but enjoyable match saw Witta Wompoos go down to the Gympie Silver team by 7 sets to 5. We played on the Maleny grass courts as our alternative 'home'. The courts were good and the clubhouse more than adequate. Annette made an impressive return to tennis winning all her sets. Stacey played as our other lady and put in a more than competent performance. The men on the day were Ernie, Haydyn, Andrew and Denis. A promising performance all round. From time to time, it’s great to take the time to realise how good things are. Wonderful tennis setting, great friends, sun shining and the Wikings were Wictorious. Nambour Nigglers travelled to Witta and despite the score line the games were close, thoroughly enjoyable and we are looking forward to our return match. Wikings up by 12 sets. In the Ladies, Jane Burgess defeated Carol Cook and Kay Gesch accounted for Relma Godfrey. Men: Allan Cook won against Doug McGufficke, but the score, 25 shots to 10, didn’t reflect the closeness of the match. I marked this match and on at least four occasions Allan extricated himself from two or three shots down with his last bowl, otherwise the result would have been much closer. Peter Duffy beat Dave Austin, Graeme Glover defeated Joe Walters and, in the closest result of the round, Brett Gillis beat Jim King 25 shots to 22. Contributed by Neil Lovett During the past week Nick Cram, Ken Barker and Vince Carbery played in the Sunshine Coast Regional Tournament, which was hosted by Headland/ Buderim. Wednesday started very wet but we made it through the day. Originally each participant was to play six games, but as play was cancelled on Thursday the draw was re-scheduled and we ended up doing battle in four games. Ted Singleton, Caloundra, won Block A with Bribie Island's Ken Wallman coming in second. Block B had Helen Matchett of Caloundra the winner, with Maleny's Nick Cram runner-up. Noel Stoddard of Nambour and Headland/Buderim's Garry Shaw filled the first two places in Block C. On Sunday, four players from Nambour and four from Caloundra joined our contingent of Donna Manning, Kath Smith, Val Carbery and Vince at the Nambour Croquet Club for a relaxing, friendly day of social croquet. The common bond which drew these people together was that they have all been playing croquet for more than twenty years. Nambour's Muriel Peters stood out with fifty years of playing this wonderful sport. On Sunday at our own lawns, under a welcoming sky, Frances Harper nosed out Nick 8-7 and Ken won 13-7 against Sarah Widin. Wednesday brought the second round of the Lochwood Shield in Pennants, with our team journeying to Coolum. Results (with our players named first) were Ken 14 Peter Sorensen 6, Donna 22 Patricia Smith 26 and Donna and Ken 10 Patricia and Peter 15. Coolum won 2-1, but with our previous 3-0 victory, we are still well placed on the ladder. At home on Thursday Frances beat Helen Andrews and John Crofts 8-5 while Val continued coaching Yve Johnson and Carol Clark. Our lawns are in the Maleny Showgrounds on Stanley River Road.
