Well, we are almost in mid-October and the last long weekend of the year is well behind us, so you know what that means – the countdown is now on to the Big C… yes, Christmas isn’t far la la la la away! Well actually there is Melbourne Cup first, which means in this week’s edition we are going to give you the heads up on all of the local events that are happening on the day that stops the nation (and this year there are lots of choices). I do know our team does like to get into the spirit of Christmas a little ahead of time, but for those of you that are in denial, it is only 75 sleeps until the fella in red arrives down your chimney. So you need to start planning for your Christmas parties, catch ups and of course for the big day. Mooloolah Valley Lions Club steps up The Lions Club of Mooloolah Valley is pleased to announce that they are soon to become a chartered club and be a club in their own right. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell welcomed Shadow Minister Ros Bates to the Glass House and neighbouring electorates last Friday to introduce her to local organisations delivering innovative and quality services in the disability, community and aged care sectors. The itinerary for Ms Bates, Andrew Powell MP with Glasshouse Country who is Shadow Minister Care clients for Communities, Women & Youth, Child Safety and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence and Shadow Minister for Disability Services and Seniors, included visits to Compass Connections Café at Nambour, the Mooloolah Community Centre and Glasshouse Country Care at Beerwah. Andrew said, "I am in awe of the organisations we have in our community delivering incredible, ‘out of the box’ services in the aged-care, community and disability sectors day in day out without the need for accolades. “I was delighted to showcase these organisations to Ros, given their alignment to her portfolio, and we had some great discussions about current and future challenges the sector face and how these businesses are turning those challenges in to opportunities,” he said. Fitting memorial What better memorial could you have for Bill Richardson, who died recently, than to kick-start a project that is about the safety and security of women in the community? Rob and Sam Outridge of Maleny Supa IGA have donated $2,500 towards a proposed community initiative to be coordinated by Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC). Through this initiative the MNC aims to establish a share house that can be used to provide temporary accommodation for women and children whilst more stable accommodation is sought for them. Bill Richardson was a man of action, a strong advocate for social justice and the safety of women and children, a strong advocate for non-violence towards women and children, and a supporter of initiatives of the MNC. MNC is all too aware of the housing needs of single older women, women experiencing homelessness, and women moving out of unsafe housing situations. MNC has found that assisting women to move into more stable housing can often take 2-3 months. Over the last couple of years the MNC has tried different options to secure grant funding and to work in partnership with local individuals, organisations and businesses to test the viability of a community managed share house. The share house would provide safe temporary housing as the women or women and children make the transition to long term housing. At Bill’s memorial service, Rob Outridge stated that he would like to donate funds towards a cause in memory of Bill’s community work. He said these funds came from small fees paid by stallholders using IGA land next to Maleny Realty. It is a virtuous circle of giving, land is owned by a community business, it is managed by a local agency (Maleny Realty) to generate funds, local stallholders operate in a prime location for a reasonable fee, and the funds generated work to create a community solution to a community problem. In the next few weeks the MNC will convene a meeting of interested individuals, organisations and businesses to take this project to the next stage – to secure the support of a community consortium to add to the $2,500 of funds and establish and manage a share house.

Landsborough local off to Antarctica! By Sonia Clark After an extensive selection process, Landsborough local Bob Wilson is about to fulfill a life-long ambition to join the Australian Antarctic Division. Later this month the long term maintenance professional (who is also a plumber by trade), will take five months off from his government job to join a small number of support staff working in Antarctica. The once in a lifetime opportunity will involve an extensive training session of nearly two weeks, nearly a month of travel (there and back) and just over three months working at Davis Research Station. Bob said it was something he’d dreamed about for a long time. “When I was younger I really wanted to do this but I didn’t have enough experience,” he said. “Then I got married and my wife and I raised four kids and I got busy with family life and work. Now the kids are all in their thirties, so I thought I’d give it another go.” Bob certainly has the experience now with over 20 years working as a maintenance supervisor for a government organisation and over 40 years plumbing experience. His job in Antarctica will be as a maintenance plumber ensuring that the air conditioners, hot water systems and sewage treatment systems

keep working – all vitally important at the remote (and freezing) outpost. An incredible 3,600 applications were received to fill just 20 maintenance support positions and the selection process was extremely (and understandably) rigorous including online and face to face interviews, role play and in depth psychological and physical assessments. Bob will fly to Hobart for training on October 17, before between 10 and 14 days of travel on an icebreaker tackling waves of up to 10 metres! Bob is a little bit nervous about the sea journey, but his excitement about the trip overrides any prejourney jitters. “I’ve done a bit of fishing in my time so I think my sea legs won’t be too bad – my biggest concern will be missing the family. “Toni and I have been married 37 years and we’ve only been apart from each other for two weeks. She is excited I’ve got the job, but I’ll definitely be missing her and the family!” Having just turned 60, Bob is looking forward to the adventure ahead. He will also will be taking a couple of miniature toy penguins and seals as “travelling companions” and is looking forward to taking pictures of them around the station to send back to the grandkids.

Welcome Landsborough Subcommittee! The Chamber of Commerce and the Landsborough Action Group have been working hard behind the scenes to pave the way to incorporate Landsborough businesses into the infrastructure of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce. We all know that Landsborough is facing some pretty significant challenges in future with the closure of the rail crossing and the planned beautification of the town centre (like Beerwah in the past). The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce is happy to announce that the Landsborough Action Group is now operating as a subcommittee within the chamber. The subcommittee will be focusing on matters important to Landsborough, with the support of the entire chamber community. Our last general meeting, held at the Beerwah Hotel, produced some good discussions amongst the participants. Tourism in the Hinterland region is just one of the big topics that will keep everybody busy for a long time, with accommodation – or the lack thereof – being a major factor. The chamber will no doubt play a major role in driving the tourism dollars into our local business communities. However, to be effective and relevant, all businesses need to be part of the chamber. Community News Marking 500 years since the Reformation Contributed by Phill Thamm Chairman of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church The Catholic and Lutheran churches have come closer together in recent decades and are holding many combined events along with other denominations this year. One such event is the screening in Maleny of the 2003 film ‘Luther’ starring Joseph Fiennes. It is a wonderful, entertaining historical drama that that shows how one man’s faith in God changed the history of the world. This is a free community event to mark the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation and all members of the public are invited to attend. The film commences at 2pm on Saturday October 28 at the Maleny Community Centre. After the film, tea and coffee will be available. Donations would be welcome to the School Chaplaincy in Maleny. Little did Martin Luther know that by Martin Luther painted the posting of his 9 152 Lucas Cranach

95 Theses would spark a revolution known as the Protestant Reformation. The Reformation has shaped religious and cultural history for the last 500 years. This year Christians across the world are marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Beginnings: Luther was born in Germany in 1483 and followed the wishes of his father to study law. During this time he was caught in a violent thunderstorm and he vowed that if he was saved, he would become a monk. Luther kept to his word and joined an austere Augustinian Order to become a priest and then a doctor of theology. Later he developed objections to many church practices. He protested the promotion of indulgences, the buying and selling of clerical privileges, and the accumulation of substantial wealth by the church while peasants barely survived. Legend has it that on October 31, 1517, Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenberg, the town where he was living. This date and the event have become symbolic of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. The thesis outlined the abuses he saw in the church and the subsequent Reformation caused the division of Christianity into Protestantism and Catholicism. Luther was branded an outlaw for refusing to recant his teachings and, in 1521, the Pope excommunicated him from the Roman Church. His patron had him secreted in a castle to avoid further reprisals and he remained there for

two years. It was during that time that Luther produced an immensely influential translation of the New Testament into German. Thanks to Luther’s translation of the Bible, it became possible for German-speaking people to stop relying on church authorities and instead read the Bible for themselves. Luther argued that ordinary people were not only capable of interpreting the scriptures for themselves, but that in doing so they stood the best chance of hearing God’s word. He wrote, “Let the man who would hear God speak read Holy Scripture.” Luther’s Bible helped form a common German dialect. Prior to Luther, people from different regions of present-day Germany often experienced great difficulty understanding one another. Luther’s Bible translation promoted a single German vernacular, helping to bring people together around a common tongue. In promoting his point of view, Luther helped to provide one of the most effective arguments for universal literacy in the history of Western civilisation.

Stockland’s Aura community on the Sunshine Coast has joined in with local school children, organisations and community members to celebrate this year’s World Habitat Day. This is the first time World Habitat Day celebrations have been organised by the community, which is recognised as Australia’s most sustainable greenfield masterplanned community by the Green Building Council of Australia. Several classes of Unity College students ranging from Years 5-12 gathered with residents and representatives of community organisations at Unity College at Bellvista to explore this year’s global theme of ‘Housing Policies: Affordable Homes’ with particular emphasis on fire management. A group of 20 staff and students, as well as local authorities and community members including representatives from the Aura Community Advisory Group, then toured conservation areas adjacent to the 24 square kilometre Aura site. Ben Simpson, Regional Manager for Stockland, said discussions centred on how affordable housing design at Aura fits in with the natural environment. “This is a particularly important topic for the local region given the recent bushfires, as our coastal environment needs appropriate fire to promote biodiversity and support habitat for wildlife and reduce the risk of wildfire,” Mr Simpson said. “As part of our planning and development of Aura, we have been working closely with a range of authorities, experts and community stakeholders to develop innovative fire management plans. “The collaboration of community stakeholders through our Aura Community Advisory Group, facilitated by Healthy Land and Water, has also resulted in cultural fire management techniques being taught to traditional owners and local firefighters at Aura – a first for the Sunshine Coast.” Speakers at Unity College included representatives from Bunya Bunya Country Aboriginal Corporation explaining the traditional burning regime at Aura; Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) revealing learnings from the recent bushfires; SEQ Fire and Biodiversity Consortium speaking of the need for control burns to promote ecosystem diversity, and University of New England PhD candidate Michelle McKemey discussing the collective development of a fire and seasons calendar for the coastal environment. business and enterprise parks.

Ingredients: • 3 large ripe bananas • 1 1/2 cup of whole wheat flour (can use gluten free option) • 1 1/2 cup tapioca flour • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1 cup coconut sugar • 40ml vegetable oil (I used avocado) • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon mixed spice • 1/2 cup pitted dates chopped • 30ml water Method: • Preheat oven to 180oC • Mix all dry ingredients together • Add oil and water • In another bowl mash banana until light and fluffy • Gently fold banana into the flour keeping the air in it • Add more water if needed • Add dates • Put into a loaf pan • Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown (time will depend on oven) • Allow to cool before serving

Maleny Community Centre will reverberate to the sounds of the Lloyd Robins Brass Ensemble from 2pm on October 22. ‘Brass through the Ages’ will feature music from Bach to the Beatles, including iconic works from Grieg, Strauss and Grainger. This is the inaugural concert from LRBE following an outstanding debut as guest artists with the Gympie Music Society concert in May this year. Members of the ensemble have a long list of achievements throughout their careers including performances throughout Australia, New Zealand and the UK as well as recordings for the ABC. All players now live and work on the Sunshine Coast and regularly perform and teach in the region. Their desire to bring this versatile form of music to the community has brought this group into being. The Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains will be hosting its inaugural Pride of Workmanship dinner and awards night on Saturday October 21 at the Beerwah Golf Club. The evening will recognise the incredible community contribution demonstrated by members of our local emergency services and is open to everyone to attend. Rotary spokeswoman Kay Farrell says that feedback about the awards has been positive and the night will provide a great opportunity to give public recognition to these community minded people. “The Pride of Workmanship dinner is a way that we can recognise the invaluable community involvement of our local emergency services people – many of whom put their lives on the line,” said Kay. Nominations have been called from the heads of stations for local police, ambulance, fire and emergency services and three awards for each category will be given out on the night. The evening will feature a three course meal, licensed bar to purchase drinks and musical entertainment from Glasshouse Christian College students.

A number of local businesses and organisations have also generously donated raffle prizes including items or vouchers from Icon Boutique, Beerwah Jewellers, Beerwah Newsagency and a beautiful handcrafted quilt from the Mountain Quilters Group. The night will also feature guest speaker and long term local resident Anne Ross, who will deliver an interesting and informative talk about the local area. With around a thousand people through the door over the two days, it seems obvious that the show is on most people’s spring 'to do' list. For an event such as this to be successful, many people need to put in a great deal of effort. We were delighted by the orchid displays of the eight societies in our district. Besides Glasshouse, there were displays from Bribie, Caboolture, Gympie, Society President Michael Keegan presents Judy Jurek with her raffle prize

Pomodoras celebrates seven years on the Obi This month join Chris and Jodi Bond along with their awesome Pomodoras team to celebrate their seventh year on the Obi and 11 years in Maleny. “We can’t believe how that time has just flown by so quickly,” says owner Jodi Bond. Environment Macadamia shells could save lives

Scientists have discovered that macadamia nut shells could be a powerful tool for Australian hospitals to use in the treatment of poisonings. New research conducted by Murdoch University shows that crushed macadamia shells could be more efficient than traditional charcoal in treating certain kinds of poisoning, such as paracetamol overdoses. Currently, Australian medical facilities treat patients by getting them to ingest a charcoal made from coconut shells which expand in the stomach to soak up toxins. This latest research has found the absorption rate of crushed macadamia shells is similar to the traditional coconut shell treatment but can be specially engineered to be more effective at mopping up toxins, and drug specific. Hort Innovation chief executive John Lloyd said the new finding paves the way for growers and processors to tap into an additional income stream. “Limiting food waste is an increasing area of research investment for horticulture industries. Growers are always looking for novel ways to repurpose their produce off-cuts,” he said. “When it comes to macadamias, 65% of the weight of the nut is in the shell so there is a huge volume of shell generated. “These findings are exciting because they present a great opportunity to add value, providing another revenue stream in macadamia production,” he said.

However, the piles of chopped trees we are seeing everywhere at the moment are confronting. The rate of woody vegetation clearing in Queensland trebled after the previous government’s changes to vegetation laws, increasing to more than 290,000 hectares per year. According to WWF-Australia, in the two years between 2013 and 2015, tree clearing was responsible for the deaths of more than 68 million animals in Queensland, a truly sobering figure. Many die immediately but many more suffer from the stresses of losing their habitat, being forced into the territories of others of their species, or into fragmented habitat with insufficient food sources. Fragmentation changes ecological patterns, processes and interactions in communities, and encourages the invasion of feral species. Habitat loss is the single greatest threat to threatened species. More than 240 species of native Australian plants and animals are under threat of extinction from land clearing, including 56 birds, 22 mammals, and 140 plant species. Land clearing not only causes the loss of species and habitat, but also reduces the resilience of populations to survive future pressures, such as climate change. Other significant negative effects result, including the increase in erosion and sediment runoff into streams and wetlands and into offshore coastal environments. The loss of large areas of bush also affects rainfall and temperature regimes, and increases the emissions of greenhouse gases. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? On September 17, 21 Beerwah State High School students flew to Queenstown, New Zealand, for a week of snow and adventure. A school spokesperson said that, during their week in NZ, students were able to build their snowboarding skills at Remarkables, Coronet Peaks and Cardrona Ski Hills. “For some students, this was their first trip to the snow and was an amazing opportunity to challenge themselves,” the spokesperson said. “In addition to snowboarding, students also participated in jet boating, rode the Skyline

Gondola to the top of the mountain where they got to race each other on the luge track, and watched the Kiwi Haka Show. Students also enjoyed seeing the sites and exploring Queenstown throughout the week. Everyone was very worn out by the end of the week but it was definitely an exciting and memorable way to spend the first week of school holidays.”

All students from Prep to Year 6 have jumped in this term at Mooloolah State School with swimming lessons and skills in PE, and for the preps it’s their first time! The program teaches younger students important skills and safety aspects about being in an around the water, all while having fun and learning to swim too, while the older and more confident students learn stroke correction or enhancements, lap swimming and survival skills as part of the school curriculum. This week the Prep students

did a fantastic job of safe entries, blowing bubbles, going under, floating and kicking. The skills and techniques learnt throughout the term gear the students up for the swimming carnival at the end of the year, a massive event that I’m sure every student will be keen for as swimming is a huge part of our school community. It’s offered at a reduced rate for 20 weeks of the school year, which enhances confidence, skills and a love of learning to swim. Who knows, maybe there’s a future Olympian in our midst here at Mooloolah! There is also an opportunity for the children to participate in Swim Club that is run every Friday night by Mooloolah Magic Swim Club. Entry is $1 to swim and $1 for a sausage sizzle. Outdoor learning and inner peace encouraged! The various benefits of outdoor play in a natural setting are well documented. At Glass House Early Education Centre the continuing expansion of their beautiful outdoor play area which also supports local ecosystems is a huge focus. The children who attend the centre are actively encouraged to learn more about outside environments with a particular focus on local flora and fauna. With this is mind, the centre has recently collaborated with local native nursery group GMAN (Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network) to help to establish their outdoor area with all local native plants and species. The idea is to create a ‘sensory garden’ where the children can learn more about native plants species and bush tucker. Last week the staff and children were super excited to plant out their first tree – a Lilly Pilly donated by the local nursery. Midyin Berry and Velvet Hop Bush have also been planted and the children are looking forward to learning more about native edible plants. Centre coordinator Ange Hardey has big plans to continue to develop

the gardens which not only offer a wonderful learning and creative play opportunity but also promote the importance of sustainability and support of the local environment. “We are so pleased that our native garden is underway and we have so many ideas about how to enrich this space for the children. Recently the Centre hosted an information evening about the endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly and ways to support the local ecology by using Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines to help attract this rare butterfly species. One of the centre’s Dads purchased 10 plants on the night and since then he and his family have already seen this endangered butterfly visit their garden! Another centre project that has just been completed is the dedicated yoga room. This specially appointed room located in Centre 2 has been created as part of the centre’s commitment to encouraging the emotional wellbeing of its children. The larger dedicated area means that the centre’s daily yoga practice is much more comfortable and the inviting space will support the children’s needs for rest and relaxation. The room can be used by all age groups throughout any time of the day. Staff members are currently studying toward achieving their ‘Cosmic Kids’ yoga qualifications and the idea behind the project is that by having a separate space within the centre for a yoga studio children's behaviour will be positively supported as well as providing excitement for the children getting to visit another space in the centre.

‘Cosmic Kids’ yoga is a story-based child-focused practice that also incorporates alphabet learning. Parents can also access lessons online through YouTube and already the daily practice is a huge hit with the children. “Embedding yoga within the centre’s service is an important addition for us to help support the children's healthy bodies and healthy minds. This is part of our long term commitment to continue to encourage and educate the children in the importance of healthy choices,” explains Ange. You Said It Adani - Remote Prospects

The recent excellent ABC program on Four Corners highlighted the corruption and environmental vandalism of the Adani Group. There have been several reports generated about the proposed Adani Carmichael mine, none more succinct than the 2017 Status Report titled ‘Adani - Remote Prospects’ by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. The $5 billion Adani Carmichael mine project has been postponed on a number of occasions and staff have been retrenched. It is no longer seen as a strategic project for Adani. This is borne out by the fact that Adani are trying to sell their Mundra coal plant for one rupee, or two cents. Mundra was to be the main recipient for Carmichael coal but has run at a consistent loss from day one, and now cannot afford to operate without significant Indian government support. According to the IEEFA report, Adani is investing $30 billion in India in many strategic projects, including renewable energy. The Indian Government has established a very strong renewable target for India, so this is where Adani is now concentrating its strategic business focus, in India. The remote Australian Carmichael mine is close to becoming a stranded asset, if it is not already. Premier Palasczuk does not want the Adani Carmichael mine to be stranded, as she could lose five or six seats at the next election and lose government. That is why she is vehemently sticking to the line that 10,000 jobs will be created, a fake figure apparently postulated by the federal Liberal MP, George Christensen. Premier Palasczuk must come clean with the electorate before the next election, dump Adani as a vote keeping strategy, and put into place a plan to re-educate and retrain Queensland communities for new jobs and what they can do to maintain their way of life, and potentially extend her Government beyond 2018. Why the intolerance?

In recent issues of the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News writers have written letters objecting to signage of current State Member Andrew Powell being displayed locally. Seeing these posters are on private property and not infringing laws, what is their problem? Are we in our society getting so intolerant that if I have a different view from you, then I have no right to have that view? This is not the Australia that I grew up from childhood to manhood in. Dangerous propaganda

Today I was disgusted to find a flyer in my mailbox from the Coalition for Marriage, stating the following libellous and untruthful accusations against marriage equality, and I quote: 1."Saying yes to gay marriage means saying yes to radical gay sex education." 2."Political correctness will be weaponised and used to shut down free speech." 3."Activists will use anti-discrimination laws to prevent churches, charities and schools from teaching or operating in accordance with their beliefs." 4."Vote no to protect your freedoms." These statements are absolute nonsense and I strongly urge all fair minded people to totally ignore them. Marriage equality is simply about the legal recognition of rights for spouses, nothing more. It is not about impacting on the school curriculum and endangering children, or impacting on freedom of speech or religious freedom as promoted by them. Those who seek marriage equality do not want to take over the world, or impose their life choices onto others. They do not want to change the way that heterosexual couples choose to live! They do not want to undermine churches and religions! They do not want to be ‘weaponised’! They do not want radical gay sex education for children! This is all total nonsense! Plastic bag ban

The ban on single use plastic bags introduced by the Palaszczuk government is welcome. In July 2013, the previous environment minister Andrew Powell said he was considering a ban on plastic bags. Within 24 hours Mr Powell confirmed he had changed his mind and was “forced to issue a retraction”, according to newspaper reports at the time. The headline read “Newman Government backflips over plastic bag plan”. Mr Powell was overruled by Campbell Newman who had been speaking at a conservative breakfast. Mr Powell is weak on environmental matters. He continues to oppose sensible tree clearing laws that protect native flora and fauna. What is astonishing is that Mr Powell now claims credit for the plastic bag ban while he is in opposition! Peter Driscoll Eudlo

Cost to state continues Andrew Powell’s appalling legacy from his term as Campbell Newman’s Environment Minister continues to cost Queensland. Under his watch, Queensland’s tree clearing laws were dismantled and the bulldozers unleashed back in 2013. The annual Statewide Landcover and Trees Study (SLATS) report, released last week, shows the rate of tree clearing in Queensland has skyrocketed, reaching an alarming rate of 395,000 hectares per year in 2015-16. The 2015-16 SLATS report also showed the rate of tree-clearing in the Great Barrier Reef catchments had soared by almost 50% since 2012-2013. To put it into plain language, that’s more than 1000 footy fields cleared every day. This outrageous level of land clearing has to stop. It’s driving our native wildlife to extinction, risking the tens of thousands of jobs reliant on the Great Barrier Reef, and driving up Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. Labor introduced strong, sensible tree clearing laws to parliament in 2016 but the LNP, including the member for Glass House, voted them down. Queensland now finds itself with the worst deforestation record in the developed world, up there with regions such as the Amazon, Congo and Borneo. Andrew Powell should be ashamed his actions have produced these devastating results. Labor will take new tree clearing laws to the next election but will only get these laws through with an operating majority in parliament. We must win seats such as Glass House to make this happen. Re: Brian Stallworthy’s letter (GC&M News August 30): I just hope that common-sense reigns in the court cases against the politicians accused of being dual citizens, and that the powers that be don’t forget that nearly all of us either held passports or are descended from someone that did, as is my case. I understand and accept that we are responsible for our actions, however I can understand how this could happen based on my own experience. I was living overseas in 1999, and therefore had no idea of the events mentioned in B Stallworthy’s letter, while I kept track of Prime Ministers and some of the general news during that time, but it is impossible to be up-to-date on absolutely everything. I guess this makes me ignorant, but I cannot, for the life of me, accept the negligent labelling. Am I, and everyone else who would/could be in that situation, supposed to search for every law, by-law etc, that came into being while I/we were absent? It seems that, according to Mr Stallworthy, I am very negligent, so I can’t even have the above as an excuse. Pamela Landsborough

Beauty& Health&Wellbeing Wellbeing Local resident reaches 200th blood donation milestone At the end of last month, Glass House Mountains resident Peter Farrell gave his 200th blood donation. This incredible milestone marks a 50 year commitment to giving blood. Working for David Jones in the late 1960s, staff members who donated blood during their lunchtime were allowed to take the afternoon off and so, as an 18 year old, Peter thought this was an excellent idea – little did he know he would still be donating half a century later. In his early twenties he was called up to join the army and served in Vietnam. Peter was then able to witness the invaluable benefits of these donations first hand as he could see injured soldiers helped by blood transfusions.

His 200th donation was completed at the blood bank at Maroochydore on September 23 and the milestone was marked by staff members presenting Peter with a special celebratory cake and badge. A more formal presentation will be held early next year. “I realised that giving blood was a way to do good for others and it can saves lives. I would definitely encourage anyone who is able to donate to do so,” said Peter. If you have been inspired by Peter’s commitment to donating blood, then you might want to make a note in your diary for when the Red Cross Mobile Donor Centre will be in our area. The good news is they will be visiting between Christmas and New Year, so you might already be on holidays at the time. They will be in Maleny, in the IGA carpark, on Boxing Day, Tuesday December 26 from 11.30am to 6pm and Wednesday December 27 from 8am to 2.30pm. Then they head to Beerwah’s Simpson Street on Thursday December 28 from 11.30am - 6.00pm and Friday December 29 from 8am - 1.00pm. GC&M News will run a reminder of the dates, times and locations in the last edition of the year, so you don’t forget!

Great Cycle Challenge update

At the end of August, GC&M News shared the story about local sports physiologist Georgia Holliday gearing up to participate in the Great Cycle Challenge. The challenge runs throughout the month of October and Georgia, from Beerwah Active Physio, has already raised over $1,100. Within the first few days of month she has already ridden 58km towards her total pledge of 700km and smashed her initial goal of raising $700. All funds raised will go to the Children’s Medical Research Institute with a focus on research, prevention and treatment of children’s cancer. Out & About Sculpture the winner

There was much excitement last Thursday night when the winners of this year’s Sculpture on the Edge were announced at Spicers Tamarind Retreat. MCF Art workshops at Landsborough

Grab the chance to interact with local Hinterland artists at a series of low cost or free workshops at Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall. On Friday October 20, artist Glenis Gray will facilitate ‘Layers of Meaning’, a full day workshop which will lead participants on an introductory journey into exploring text and collage to create a uniquely personal artwork ($20, ages 10+). Using personal photos and other reference materials to initiate memories, participants will develop ideas on canvas and take a finished artwork home with them and inspiration for more ‘meaningful’ works. Join Peter Hughes on Saturday October 21 (for children under 10) and on Sunday November 5 (adults) for free half day workshops exploring ‘Connecting with Country’. Peter will share with participants what inspires him and how to look for inspiration in found natural materials. Through these engaging workshops, Peter will seek to share his artistic insights and inspire participants to connect, feel and observe the country around them. On Sunday October 22 (children under 10) and Saturday November 4 (adults), Cholena Drew Hughes will guide attendees on the process of making ‘sun prints’ (cost $10) in half day sessions. Creating sun prints can be fun and magical to experience and each attendee will be able to expose natural materials (leaves, feathers, flowers, etc) onto primed paper to create beautiful pieces which will change colour from a dull green to a rich Prussian blue. A Splash of Colour

Vivid, vibrant and moving is certainly what ‘A Splash of Colour’ exhibition by Bob Maas and Jacky Gibson (pictured below) is all about. The works almost jump off the wall to greet you as you walk into Vianta in Beerwah! This collaboration between the two artists is an electric welcome to spring, and the colour and excitement that this season brings with it. Bob Maas has always been keen on artwork and showed talent from a young age. His grandfather was an artist and an uncle who lives in Spain is a professional artist. Bob’s talent in art is a great strength and outlet for his creativity. Jacky Gibson studied art through high school and developed a real love of it there. After leaving school she studied Radiography in London and had many opportunities to visit major galleries and learned much from these sorties. As a student, painting time was limited but she purchased a set of oil paints and began her lifelong love affair with this medium. However, it wasn't until she retired that she was able to satisfy her passion fully. A Splash of Colour will be on exhibition at Vianta, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah, until October 28. The Prime Minister on the Sunshine Coast!

I have been encouraging Malcolm Turnbull to visit us on the Sunshine Coast for more than a year and I was therefore proud and delighted to welcome him here last month. I took the PM to Caloundra RSL to talk informally to 300 Sunshine Coasters in a ‘Politics in the Pub’ event, which was a great success. Many people had the opportunity to meet the PM and to ask him a question in a wide ranging discussion. During his time here I think Malcolm Turnbull demonstrated not only that he is a personable bloke and a highly intelligent leader, but also that he gets it. I saw how the PM listens carefully to people that he meets, and surrounds himself with a fantastic team, to ensure that the government delivers for the Sunshine Coast and for all Australians. I want to say thank you to everyone who attended that event. During his visit the PM also joined me at the site of the $929 million Bruce Highway upgrade currently underway at Caloundra Road. We viewed the worksite and met some of the workers who are making the improved road a reality. The PM visited a number of works on the Bruce Highway during the week and showed his strong personal commitment to getting the infrastructure we need in Queensland. The Sunshine Coast has powerful allies in the Prime Minister and the Minister for Infrastructure Darren Chester in getting the road and rail upgrades that we deserve. State Member for Glass House Container Refund Scheme forum

The Queensland Government has announced a Container Refund Scheme (CRS) and a plastic bag ban for Queensland, both due to start in July 2018. These measures will help to tackle plastic pollution and improve recycling and I want to ensure the Glass House electorate is fully prepared. As an individual, local community group or local business, it is important for you to understand how these changes may affect the way you operate and what you can do to prepare. The CRS presents a significant financial opportunity for the not-for-profit sector and local businesses to be involved, offering a way to secure a long term and sustainable revenue base through the collection and return of cans and bottles. Under the bag ban, lightweight shopping bags will no longer be available, and businesses will need to provide alternative solutions for customers. To help you prepare I will be hosting an evening forum on Thursday October 19 from 5.30pm - 7pm at Glass House Mountains Sports Club, 902 Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains. The forum will give you the opportunity to consider the value and potential of your involvement in the CRS, and to jointly discuss and plan arrangements on how local organisations can participate, either individually or in partnership with each other. The Boomerang Alliance, who have been instrumental in the design of the CRS and bag ban, will be there to present and answer any questions you may have. I’m a big fan of small businesses in Glass House and that’s why I’m excited that the LNP’s ‘Buy Local’ procurement policy will produce more local jobs, cut 20% of red tape for businesses to tender for work, and ensure value for money for Queensland taxpayers. I want to see more local jobs in Glass House and our policy will deliver. Buy Local will give local businesses a real hand up, not a hand out, and create more local jobs. On Government projects under $100 million, whether that’s desks for a school or building a new road, only true Queensland firms will be given a price match guarantee. If a local business that’s headquartered in Queensland and has a workforce in the project area matches the lowest bid – they’ll get the job. I have recently had an enquiry regarding bamboo and walkway concerns on Flaxton Mill Road, in Flaxton and there is work scheduled for hazards associated with the bamboo. The bamboo itself was stressed and in poor health due to the prolonged dry weather we have experienced lately and has abnormally excessive leaf drop. After the recent rain, it is highly likely to recover and very quickly. A Suncorp Insurance spokesperson said many insurance policies will not cover damage to property if it’s related to poor workmanship. “Additionally, home owners are not covered if they have carried out renovations to their home which do not comply with building laws or regulations,” Suncorp’s Head of Property Claims

Suncorp has seen many cases where amateur renovators have built their own verandas, pergolas or carports, only to see their insurance declined because of a number of issues. “Some of the claims declined relate to decking and awnings installed by customers who used incorrect materials that did not withstand weather conditions. “In one case, the home owner proudly added a verandah, which promptly collapsed when a storm hit a few weeks later. The veranda proved to be substandard and the insurance claim was declined. “Turning garages into habitable rooms is popular among weekend renovators and equally fraught with potential traps,” Ms Stewart said. “Some may decide to convert their basements into a liveable space and may not consider appropriate heights, or the drainage and flooring type. For example, they may lay down laminated timber flooring on to a concrete slab without proper waterproofing. Because of subsequent seepage into the sub-floor rooms, insurance claims are likely to be declined. “One of the biggest mistakes Weekend Warriors make is when joining extensions to the main house. If done incorrectly, this can result in water seepage into the home.

“A number of Weekend Warriors feel the need to renovate their kitchens with equally disastrous results.” Common mistakes include installing splashbacks, which are not sealed, and water filters being installed incorrectly. Ms Stewart cited one case where a house was destroyed by fire following the occupant installing a wood heater incorrectly. This caused a fire in the wall cavity. It also turned out that the installation required a permit, but this was not obtained. The claim was subsequently declined. “Even a touch of home painting can prove disastrous with paint spilling on expensive carpet. Some insurance policies do cover accidental damage but people need to check their policies,” she said. “However, there are also many DIY efforts which are carried out properly and are not liable to have any negative effect on claims. DIY supporters just need to make sure their work is of an appropriate professional level and in line with regulations, or simply call an expert.”

In theGarden Dust up in the garden Garden soil is just a mixture of organic matter (compost, humus, soil organisms, water) and inorganic matter. The inorganic matter is the end result of a long process of weathering and breakdown of rocks and minerals into smaller particles – sand, silt,

clay for example. The organic component of soil is always being rapidly broken down and is something we must continually replenish. We add composts, manures, green waste, green crops, mulch and kitchen scraps. But the inorganic parts are things we tend to neglect. Sure, we add sand if the soil needs loosening up, but that’s about the extent of our considerations. But it shouldn’t be that way. The inorganic components of the soil continue to breakdown just as the organics do – albeit at a much slower rate. And over time the balance of sand, silt and clay can get out of whack or the soil can lose its capacity to provide vital inorganic trace elements. That’s where rock minerals come into the picture. Contrary to what you’d think, the commercial products are just crusher dust or pulverised granite. A good commercial rock mineral product is a blend of a range of rocks and minerals – and some are even inoculated with soil microbes too. Common minerals you’ll find in the products are potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, boron molybdenum, copper, sulphur, phosphorus, silica, and more. They’ll also have soil conditioning compounds and clays like bentonite, zeolite and gypsum. To make it easier to handle, the powdered minerals and rocks are reconstituted into clusters or balls called ‘prills’. But what does this rock mineral stuff actually do? Well, it has a twofold benefit. Firstly, it provides a slow release source of all those elements that your plants need to grow healthily and happily. They’re not in a water soluble form, so they won’t wash away in the first big downpour. And because of the slow release action, you can’t overdose the soil like you can with other fertilising products and cause toxicity to the plants and organisms. Secondly, they provide the perfect environment for your soil microbes to flourish. And in reality, your soil health and vitality is all down to having healthy microbes. Adding a sprinkle to your worm farm is a great idea too. An added benefit is that the soil structure will be improved meaning that the soil will have a better capacity to absorb and hold water. But don’t think of it as an all-in-one fertiliser. Your plants will still need a ready supply of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in a form which is easily absorbed by the plant roots. So keep up the manuring, composting and fertilising regimes... just supplement it with a twice a year dosing of rock minerals too.

From the churches A phone call

Kel (not his real name) called me recently. Living 400km away down a long lonely road in a remote part of Queensland, Kel needed a chat. As teenagers we were friends. I was studying while Kel became proficient with the guitar. We both married and as happens, we moved away from each other. Then 50 years later we accidentally get to meet again, on the long lonely road near the house he lives in. Both older men, we now chat on the phone every year or so. We catch up on what is new in our lives, and that includes the health issues which plague us as we age. There’s plenty of talk about painful joints, restricted physical abilities, and of course how the beat up old 4WD on that remote property is struggling to come to life again. But the main driver of the call from Kel on this day is the news that a mentor to both of us, Doug (not his real name either), is struggling with his health in his middle eighties. We reminisce about the good times with Doug and the great music he and Kel created with their guitars at church gatherings. Then he tells me he is a grandfather again with his daughter just giving birth. A bloke has got to tell his mates. But then he tells me I am one of few he can call. Living with few personal contacts in his remoteness, and having lost friends to the grim reaper, Kel is experiencing what so many older Australians do, a sense of isolation and loneliness. Currently I am reading in the Bible Paul's letter written to the Galatians. Paul takes great care in his introductory and closing paragraphs to make sure everyone in the town is included in his greetings. Sometimes it behooves us to make sure the lonely and isolated are part of our daily greeting. What a difference it can make in their lives; and ours too! Doug was pleased to receive my call too.

Anyway on to the important matters. Saturday September 30 was a Stableford game with 19 players. The scores were stunning (well, for some). The winner was Fay Barry with 43 pts, runner up was Andrea Campbell 42 pts (off 10 handicap). All four Pin Shots were won by Andrea Campbell. I don't think I've ever seen that before. Well done, Andrea. Ball run down went to 37 pts. Birdie Box on 17 was won by Vanessa Aland. Thursday October 5 we played a Monthly Medal with 46 players (fields still very small): A Grade winner Cathy Stone 72 nett, Runner up Andrea Campbell 75 Nett. B Grade winner Sharon Phillips 73 nett, runner up was Fay Barry 74 nett. C Grade winner was Gail Hancock 71 nett, runner up Joan Swyny 73 nett and gross winners were: A Grade Sonia Kenway 86, B Grade Lesley Eggleston 95, C Grade Kathy Moffat 104. Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club will soon be running Milo in2Cricket sessions again! The program is perfect for boys and girls aged 5-8 years to learn basic cricket skills. It begins on Monday October 23 at the Glass House Mountains Sports Club. Sessions are on a Monday from 3.45 - 4.45pm and run until November 27, cost is $75. The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker On the weekend that formed the cusp of September and October, Ken Barker and Donna Manning played in the Windsor Cup at the Windsor Club in Brisbane. Donna brought honour to the club by winning division C with 5 won games out of 6. Congratulations, Donna. Ken could only win one from 5 in division B. Les Watson won division A. Cynthia Tacey won division B. Sunday saw Helen Andrews and Nick Cram match wits with Robert Elliot, with the pair winning a close encounter 12-10. Blackall Range Group arrived to a refreshed lawn on Tuesday – the first group to take advantage of the good rain on Sunday and Monday. To all accounts it was a good morning. On Thursday Nick Cram and Sally Adams 7 were overpowered by Kath Smith and Helen Andrews 20. Kath played well to peg out. Croquet is a game where, unlike life, it is a good thing to peg out. It means that you have achieved the maximum score. 48

Junior cricket rocked Contributed by Leanne McAllister The new Junior Cricket season has been declared a success, with Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club hosting the first round of the Milo T20 Blast competition on Friday night under lights. Three Glasshouse teams, along with teams from Caloundra, Landsborough and Maleny clubs, scored lots of runs and took wickets with music pumping in the background just like their Big Bash idols! Glasshouse U11s: 5/116 def Caboolture Maroon 5/67, played at Caboolture. Glasshouse U14s: 4/124 def by Tewantin Noosa Storm 6/163, played at Glasshouse.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails had a home game against Kawana Slammers. The Wagtails came out firing, but half way through the Slammers fought back and came out winners on the day. A thoroughly enjoyable day of tennis. Thanks to the Wagtails team Gerry, Claire, Sonia and Eunice. In extremely hot conditions the Wildcats fought it out against Nambour ZTA Novas. It was always going to be close but unfortunately due to an injury one of the ZTA players had to pull out. Pauline, Annie, Libby and Stacey came home with the win 5-3 sets, 41-20 games. Whistlers played at Witta against Ballinger Breezers. After the two weeks off we were glad to be back and playing but it was hot and we suffered from the heat. Great games with lots of rallies and deuces, and we were exhausted by the last games. We had a win but had enough for the day. Score was 42-33 games, 5-3 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Witta Wompoos defeated the Nambour Div 2 team at Witta on Sunday by 7 sets and 61 games to 5 sets and 44 games. It was touch and go for most of the afternoon but the Wompoos finally roared down the last stretch with a couple of very solid mixed results to seal a convincing victory. One more scheduled match to play before the finals where we expect to take on the leaders Gympie at Nambour. In a prelim to the finals the Wikings hosted Nambas Menaces. It was even right up to the last two sets where the Menaces pulled away, just. Final score 5-7 sets 48-52 games. The Wikings will play the Menaces in November in the Div 3 finals. Thanks to Greg Gledhill for assisting regulars, No John, Big Kev, No Knees, Stacey and Pauline. The Witta Tennis Golf Challenge is on at Maleny Golf Club, Sunday October 22, 7am Tee Off. Cost is $30 to Witta Tennis (includes smoko snags and a barbeque lunch). Green fees to be paid in the club house – Gold Members free and $15 for all others. This is a 4 ball Ambrose competition. Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Jim King This coming Saturday Junior Jack Attack moves to a 5pm start and social bowls for members and visitors moves to a 6pm start. Come along and try your hand at an enjoyable evening bowling. Tuesday winners in the member’s games were John Kapetanic, Don Ginns and Joe Walters. Wednesday saw the beginning of the new Twilight Bowls competition and we had a good turn out with twelve teams. We still have room for more players so, if you are interested come along at 6pm – no experience necessary. Winners were The Grove, Ben Bryce, Mavericks and Handles. Touchers went to Heather Loynes, Graeme Glover and Joe Walters. Lucky draws went to Scott Alexander, Miles Allen and Ian Chatterton while money board winners were Portia and Mel Gesch and Joe Walters. The long awaited grand final of the Scroungers competition saw Ian Chatterton, Joe Walters and Ray Pantlin play 20 ends. Congratulations to Ian who was a clear winner. Winners in other games were David Burgess, Heather Snell and Miles Allen. Scroungers will continue for the rest of the year each Friday 2.30 for 3pm. Visitors and novices most welcome – bowls and instruction provided. Our Big Weekend for October went very well thanks to the many club volunteers who assisted with catering, bowling support and bowling. On Saturday we hosted the Andrew Powell fundraising day for Lung Cancer with about 30 ‘bowlers’. Everyone seemed to enjoy the barefoot bowls and the gourmet afternoon tea. On Sunday we hosted 20 bowlers from the Northside Social Bowls Club. After morning tea, 8 ends of triples were played before a barbeque lunch and another 8 ends. The locals emerged the winners – Relma Godfrey, Bryan Fripp and Jim King.

It requires completing a round of 18 holes in the same or less number of strokes than your age. Kevin Norton achieved this milestone recently. Two months after his 75th birthday he fired a 75 off the stick (45 points) to win the September 30 A grade Stableford event. A week earlier, John Runge scored 77 to miss by one. Kevin's success secret? “Perseverance,” he said. A grade runner up was John Wuersching on 42. In B grade three players tied on 40 points. After countbacks, Richard Rees won from Gary Stockwell and Ted Hope. Les Ramage scored 42 points to win C grade from Heinz Kleiner and Justin Neubecker on 41. Heinz won the countback – good to see Heinz take a trophy at long last. NTPs: 2 - Les Ramage, 5 - Phil Siegle, 16 Trevor Brimelow, 18 - Keith Lynam. In last Wednesday's medley Stableford event, three players tied at the top of A grade on 39 points. Corey Wallyn was king of the countback followed by fast improving Murray Hall and perpetual practiser Rusty Tillyard. Moss Thistlewaite played a solid, consistent round in B grade to come out on top with 39 points. Richard Rees was second a point behind (his second major placing in the last two competitions). Third place went to Bill James (37) on countback from Terry Lawlor (Headland) and Justin Neubecker. C graders showed how the game should be played - the top 11 all scored 40 points or more. Robert Goymer headed the list on 44. A point behind was Brian Morrissey with Brian Coyle third on 42 after a countback with Dennis McQuillan (Bay Islands). NTPs: 2 - Ray Lloyd, 5 - Murray Hall, 16 Geoff Williamson, 18 - Lea Garner. October's monthly medal was held on Saturday with Phil Siegle taking out a hotly contested A grade on 68 nett. Three 69s followed with Paul Stewart (welcome back, Paul) winning the countback from Col Penney and Luke Doyle. Royce Ginnivan won B grade on 67 followed by Tony Mraz (69) winning the countback from Graham Ash. Trevor Sanderson took out C grade with a 71 beating Kev Reynolds 72. George Walter and Col Baker missed second place by the countback. NTPs: 2 - Geoff Broadstock, 5 - Murray Elks, 16 - Les Ramage, 18 - Andrew Christie (Riverside Oaks).

Wednesday, October 4: Our ladies played in an 18 Hole Single Stableford Competition with first place going to Margaret Trigger with 37 points, runner-up went to Toni Bishop with 34 points and third place went to Robin Hay with 33 points on a count-back from Seri Tytherleigh. NTPs: 3 - Christine, 5 - Robin Hay. Friday, October 6: The Chook-Run was played and the winner was Niel Cronk with a tie for runner-up going to Graham Thompson and Alan Stevens – third place went to Jack Day. We welcomed two new players this week – all golfers are welcome to come along and join in and play in this event. Saturday, October 7: There was an 18 Hole 2 Person Ambrose Competition played with First Place going to the team of Tom Kennedy and Dave Nielsen with 61 nett, Runners-Up went to Garth and Rob Bailo with 62.75 and Third Place went to Brandon and Malcolm Ewing with 66.5 nett on a count-back from Robin Hay & Jimmy Byun.
