Hi Everyone
E
very year in our office, our staff do a ‘Secret Santa’, and it is simply incredible how much discussion and anxiety it causes. Generally the discussion mostly revolves around everyone trying to crack the secret code and work out who has been allocated for whom – I am not sure why this became important but for some reason a lot of energy goes into it. Then the rest of the time there is lots of speculation about ‘hypothetically if you had so and so what would you buy them?’ This year the whole process has been simplified.
After last year seeing just how many people generously came and donated presents to go under our Christmas tree for the ‘Kids in Care’ appeal, our team decided that was a much more rewarding process than buying for a fellow staff person. So we have all gone off and purchased something to place under the tree – it has been great – so easy – and so nice to know that even though we don’t know where it will end up, (so essentially still a secret) that it will go to someone who doesn’t have their own family around them to remind them they are loved and cared for. It is just a small gesture on our part, but I know it has reminded us all about the importance of kindness and sharing with others. Regards,

At the Maleny Christmas Festival you can expect to see dancing in the street – Maple Street that is from 6.00pm – 10.00pm. There will be rides for all ages, including a carousel and laughing clowns for the younger kids, jumping castles (including one for big ‘kids’), climbing wall and the Hurricane for those with strong stomachs! Entertainment will include a wide range of live music and entertainment for everyone. Along with great food venues with fantastic diversity, and a creative projected light display by local artist Corrie Wright, and of course Santa will visit too.

Local tourism a winner The Sunshine Coast’s tourism industry was in the spotlight recetnly with 12 local organisations vying for Queensland Tourism Awards. These included the Glass House Mountains Visitor and Interpretive Centre, which has been nominated by Visitor Information and Services – Sunshine Coast Destination Limited who took out the silver medal on the night. As well as Maleny Cheeses who received a bronze for excellence in food tourism. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the awards were a celebration of our tourism sector’s achievements over the past 12 months. “The awards also recognise the innovative ways these businesses have grown and diversified to capture a growing tourism market in a highly competitive period. “All nominators should feel very proud. The awards provide a great platform upon which to showcase all that the Sunshine Coast, and indeed our Sunshine Coast tourism industry, has to offer. “We are fortunate to live in one of the best places on earth and our tourism industry is proving it’s up there with the best when it comes to providing great service and memorable experiences.” Operating for 29 years, the awards recognise the outstanding achievements of our tourism operators across the state.

Students were joined by their families and volunteer tutors recently to celebrate and recognise their successful participation in the Adult Literacy Program funded by Sunshine Coast Council.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Libraries has been a Registered Training Organisation for 15 years and offers nationally accredited Adult Literacy training. “The Adult Literacy Program helps adults improve their practical literacy, numeracy and digital skills so they can participate independently in the community,” Cr McKay said. One of the successful course participants was Ann Moran from Landsborough. After a serious car accident, Ann lost her confidence and the ability to read and write properly so she avoided reading anything. “My short term memory loss was severe and I forgot words which I knew two seconds before,” she said. “I have a Bachelor of Science and have completed other university studies, so everyone expected that I could read. It was very frustrating not to be able to read like before. “I found everybody asked me to read and understand multiple forms, which I found overwhelming. “I am now trying to improve my memory by watching quiz shows and going to the Adult Literary class. The class has changed my life.”
Cr Jenny McKay explained that this inspirational program receives an average of seven calls every week from people wanting to improve their literacy, wanting to join in English Conversation Classes or willing to volunteer as a tutor trainer. “When you hear the stories of these individuals you can’t help but feel inspired by their determination to succeed and change their lives forever. “Each one of them has their own personal reasons for enrolling. Some want to help their school aged children with their homework or some are from non-English speaking backgrounds, but they all are driven with the same goal – to enhance their conversational, reading, writing and numeracy skills. “I congratulate each participant on their achievements – they are truly remarkable people,” she said. Sports Club in Crisis By Lea Parkes Earlier this year GCNews brought you the news that the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club was experiencing difficulties, and support from the members of the community was being actively sought. And while the Sports Club did experience a wonderful rush of support at the time, unfortunately this has not been enough to provide a long-term or permanent solution to the Club’s financial worries. Sports Club President Ken Fullerton said some serious decisions will need to be made about the Club’s future. “We are aware that the Club may not be able to continue in its present form and that sweeping changes will need to be implemented,” he said. “It is possible that the clubhouse itself may close, however the Club and its affiliated sporting clubs are working closely together to find a solution so that players can be confident that sport will continue to be played at the club,” Ken said. “During the past 12 months the affiliated sporting clubs have really come to the fore in their support and for this the committee is particularly grateful. “The committee has investigated many options including accessing increased support from State and Federal government and council, and have been making savings in all areas of the Club’s operation. “However, it has become increasingly difficult to
translate these into profitable long-term solutions,” said Ken. In an effort to try and consolidate the Club’s position in the short term, the Club will be reducing their trading hours from this week. Initially a decision has been made that the Club will be closed on Sundays, the restaurant will be closed on Thursdays and only open on Friday nights (until the end of December), with the possibility of further opening hour restrictions to be implemented. The crisis the Club now faces is a result of simply the difference between the ever-increasing expenses required to keep the grounds and facilities operational and profitable, and the reduction of income that the Club receives via its various operations (bar, kitchen, and field hire etc). Some of the major influences are not within the control of the committee. One example is poker machine revenue, which has experienced a downturn of $220,000 in the last three years. The committee are well aware of the importance of both the club and its sporting facilities play within the Glasshouse community, and have contributed hundreds of volunteer hours to ensure that it could be maintained into the future. Established in the mid-1920’s the club has experience a long and varied history and it has been a worthy testament to all those men and
women whose hard work over the years has resulted in the high quality facilities currently available to the community today. The Sports Club committee would like to thank members and patrons for their support and concern, particularly in the last couple of weeks, and trusts that the New Year will bring a solution that will benefit the whole community.

Boardwalk ready for Christmas A Christmas gift is coming to Maleny in the form of a new pedestrian and cycle link with scenic outdoor dining opportunities. The Maleny Riverside Boardwalk Project is on track to be open by the end of December. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the attractive timber boardwalk would provide a picturesque travel route for pedestrians and cyclists with views of Obi Obi Creek. “This first stage of works has included installation of footing micropiles and construction of the 3m boardwalk timber decking and handrails,” Cr McKay said. “The boardwalk extends to 4m behind the restaurant to enable outdoor dining opportunities and this section will be available for business within the next week.” Cr McKay said the utmost care had been taken to ensure the surrounding environment, including the nearby Obi Obi Creek, had not been harmed. “This section of Obi Obi Creek is very important habitat for platypus and other native animals and flora and council has had fauna monitors onsite

Journey continues for towerless NBN Donna Fisher, the Australian author of books relating to EMF (electromagnetic fields) and their effects on humans joined the Music and Information event in Tesch Park, Maleny on Saturday, November 29. This event was organised by the ‘Towerless NBN for Maleny Hinterlands’ Group to provide advice to residents about the campaign to have NBN Co rollout broadband by fixed lines rather than by using microwave towers. As Donna introduced her new book – ‘Light that Heals’ - she told the attendees of her involvement in a previous campaign against the installation of an electrical sub-station near to her home. ‘Silent Fields’ is her book which covers this issue. Donna also explained the potential long term health effects – generally unknown by most people - from the use of mobile phones, cordless phones, wifi and wireless baby monitors. Local musicians gifted their time, along with cleverly crafted new songs, to entertain the attendees. Linsey Pollack performs at the recent community concert

Jim Straker advised of the activities undertaken by all sections of the ‘Towerless NBN for Maleny Hinterlands’ group. This included letters to NBN Co Board, politicians, newspapers and the conduct of information kiosks and meetings. Jim completed his presentation by seeking action from all interested residents of Maleny Hinterlands who wanted a fast NBN service without the use of microwave towers. These actions would be similar to those undertaken by the group as this would make more people aware of the local community expectations. The next information day will be held at the Community Centre kiosk from 10.00am to 3.00pm on Saturday, December 20. The girls are currently up to their necks in baby ducklings which doesn’t sound so bad until you realise what is involved in caring for nearly 90 chicks that have arrived at their Landsborough Centre this breeding season. The chicks have lost their mothers one way or another and require three months of intensive care before they will be able to return to the wild. People bring ducklings to the centre for a number of reasons but most commonly their mothers have been hit by cars or attacked by domestic dogs and cats, leaving the babies alone and helpless. Bridget and Paula are pleading with the public to not let their dogs run through the bush when they are out for walks because they can frighten mothers away from their nests. Domestic cats need to be inside by 6.00pm as this is the time ducks are moving about. People also need to stay away from nests if they see them in their gardens and not assume that ducklings alone in a nest have been abandoned as often the mother is feeding nearby and will return. If you think you have found a nest of orphaned ducklings the girls are urging you to observe them from a distance for some hours before approaching. So how can you help? Donations of chick starter, a mixture of grains for ducks would be very welcome. They also need fresh greens for the babies - things like lettuce, silver beet and bok choy are very popular so if you have excess in your garden drop some off at the centre. For those not familiar with the Powers sisters,
they are identical twins who are totally committed to helping wildlife, particularly seabirds. They are a charming pair who are passionate about their work and are completely like-minded, finishing each other’s sentences as their stories tumble out. Their centre is at 2147 Steve Irwin Way, just north of the Landsborough turnoff and they welcome visitors to come and see what they do. They have attracted a small grant from the local council but rely heavily on public donations and volunteers to continue the work they do. They have an intensive care facility for injured birds that can spend many months recovering before they are able to be released. Many seabirds like pelicans are injured by fishing tackle that has been carelessly left in their environment and the girls said they are getting busier each year as our local population grows. They are particularly concerned about the plans for development that will bring another 50,000 people to the Halls Creek area. They have already noticed a decrease in pelican numbers in Pumicestone passage and have had to deal with more cases of botulism than ever before. We are lucky to have these girls in our area, they deserve our support.

Community News Local family have success in Ultimate Taekwon-Do
Long time Mooloolah locals, Shannon, Matthew and Adam from the Purser family along with another Mooloolah local, Monique Smits have just been selected to represent Australia at the Ultimate Taekwon-Do world championships. To be held next June 2015 in Rimini, Italy, the Purser family are thrilled to have achieved this accomplishment in their chosen sport. All competitors are members of the Ultimate Taekwon-Do school in Warana which Shannon and his wife Tania opened up four years ago. The Purser family have been practicing Taekwon-Do for the last 12 years and all five family members (mum, dad and three sons) have been involved in the not-for-profit school which currently has approximately 80 students and is part of Sunshine Coast & QLD Taekwon-Do incorporation. Shannon holds national titles for the over 40's age division and Tania has been selected as a coach for the Australian team. Recently a group of 18 competitors and supporters travelled to Sydney to compete in the Australian selections competition, and all 11 students who competed were selected to represent their country in the world championships. Thirty competitors in total were selected from all over Australia, with a third of them selected from the Sunshine Coast school. This is a great achievement and no doubt one that the school is extremely proud of.

The Celebrate Beerwah team is happy to announce that the 2015 Beerwah Celebration will be held on Friday, October 16. Over 20 people attended the November meeting at the Beerwah CWA hall to discuss the future of the street party. Topics explored included when to hold the event, how it might look in future years, and volunteer roles to be filled. A number of dates were suggested including an early December option, however the group decided that there are too many competing demands over Christmas and that the third Friday in October was good for volunteers, families and schools. The idea of holding complimentary events in Beerwah over the whole weekend was also discussed and considered a great option to promote Beerwah, Glasshouse Country and to give a boost to the local economy. A number of new people were welcomed to the meeting and several roles within the Celebrate Beerwah team were filled. Lovely refreshments were provided by Pasta D’Vine and Bombay Bliss. A palaeontologist and a large sabre-toothed tiger were both on the guest list at Robert Irwin’s ‘Prehistoric’ birthday last week at Australia Zoo. The party featured dinosaur themed games and activities including fossil displays and face painting and an amazing cake. Joined by sister Bindi and mum Terri, Robert Irwin unveiled his 11th birthday present, a now extinct ‘Smilodon’ statue – a real-size replica of one of the largest types of sabre-toothed tigers. The special gift designed by Australia Zoo’s talented in-house artist Cameron will join a collection of dinosaur statues around the zoo. Robert said he was ‘thrilled’ to unveil the awesome Smilodon statue situated outside Australia Zoo’s Tiger Temple. “Our artist at Australia Zoo is absolutely amazing and loves prehistory, so I knew this would be so cool,” Robert said. The incredible Smilodon statue followed on from a special gift last year, when Robert got the chance to feed his first croc. “Crocodiles are modern day dinosaurs, so they are one of my favourite animals we have here at Australia Zoo and I just love learning about them,” he added. Robert also got to catch up with palaeontologist Dr Scott Hocknull from Queensland Museum to check out some fossils, enjoyed messing around with giant roving dinosaurs from ‘Erth’ and shared his birthday cake with everyone who came to celebrate. www.gcnews.com.au

All the ladies were dressed up in their Xmas gear and had a lovely day with plenty of fun and games. Firstly we had ‘Pass the Parcel’ and who got to open each stage had to don a Xmas hat and at the end of the game, had to sing a Xmas carol to everyone. After partaking in our Xmas dinner we then had secret Santa. This was another fun way to each receive their presents. We had to pass our present either to the left or the right following instructions from Elaine in the form of a story. Everyone got confused about which was left or right. It was a fun game to play. Thanks to Yvonne Robinson for making and donating the teddy bear for a raffle. Also thanks to Lynette Moss for making and donating the ginger bread house for raffling. Our oldest member, Val Burrell celebrated her 98th birthday last week. Our AGM is coming up on January 21, so please consider joining the committee as a couple of positions need nominations.
Our membership this year has nearly reached 50 members so we would like to keep going and enjoying our outings and luncheons into 2015. Open garden brings out the generosity in others Recently Jenny and Keith Wellsteed, who live on a macadamia nut farm at Crohamhurst, opened their garden to raise funds for Downs and West Community Support. The group offers encouragement and practical support to our neighbours in rural and remote Queensland who are often severely affected by climatic changes. The open garden proved a successful and fun day out and to date they have already received over $1750.00 with more donations promised. Jenny said she was very pleased with the support she had received from the local community including the Peachester Horticultural Society who decided to donate to her event instead of members purchasing each other a small gift. Beerwah Hideaway 'Candles in the Garden' community event The owners of Beerwah Hideaway, Simon and Jen Farrell, are planning a very special festive season event on the evening of Friday, December 12 to say thank you to the local community. Providing visitors with a chance to soak up an evening of ambience, the property will be beautifully lit up with hundreds of candles. The event will be free, however a gold coin donation is requested, with funds raised going to the community support programs of the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the grounds and see the results of over 18 months of hard work that has been put into the property. The cafe will be open for dinner and will feature a modern Australian menu, however visitors are more than welcome to bring a picnic, blanket and BYO. The cafe will feature a variety of tasty dinner options – all with a modern Aussie cuisine flavour and diners can enjoy seafood and steaks prepared by the brand new chef.
There will be a fantastic raffle on the night with a prize of two nights’ accommodation at the Beerwah Hideaway up for grabs and kids will receive a free stick of fairy floss to enjoy. The new car park provides plenty of room for parking and visitors can come along and check out the new water features, statues and landscaping throughout the pleasantly rambling property. As mentioned earlier, on the evening, the whole property will be stunningly lit up with hundreds of candles; there will also be lanterns and solar lights illuminating the beautiful gardens. Donations of candles are still being accepted – with a huge thank you to the many families and individuals who have already donated. The funds raised for Glasshouse Country Uniting Church will be used for supplies and activities for the Wednesday morning playgroup (9.00am – 11.00am) and the Wednesday evening kids club (5.00pm – 7.00pm) which caters to five to 10-year-olds.

Absolute pleasure
A lot is said about the unruliness of today's youth; however, my wife and I had the pleasure of attending the Australian Air Force Cadet’s Graduation Parade at Caloundra Airport on Saturday, November 29. The dedication and discipline of the cadets proved to us that these young people are responsible and hard working and a credit to their parents. The parade was faultless, well disciplined and a pleasure to watch. The cadets must have worked extremely hard to gain such perfection. My heartiest congratulations are extended to the Officers and cadets and to the corps of drums. Their performance would have been worthy of an appearance at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Our modern Beerwah
A decade ago the decision was made to move into the magic town of Beerwah, we have the written promise of a high speed rail service to Landsborough by 2012 an effective rail service to Caloundra by 2015 and Nambour by 2020. Plus connecting bus services – all that went belly up! Then a hope of fresh air from Councillor Baberowski on new transport rejuvenation – all ending in nothing but political hot air. Then we have a wonderful promise from Andrew Powell, we should have a public transport system by 2035 – ‘wow’, we can’t wait! If only we could find just one genuine politician to represent the wishes of our wonderful community. Not one cent
Much has been said about this unpopular budget item. The reason given for this payment was that it is necessary in order to preserve our Medicare System. I am surprised that nobody ever challenged this ‘reason’. Because not one cent is going to the preservation of the Medicare system! The complex has so many empty shops why not just change your mind and leave Smileys alone to continue the good service and friendship we have always had at Smileys with Tania and her team? Years of disasters
I note Gillian Pechey’s letter a week or two ago refers to Tony Abbott’s consistent failure to acknowledge the affect on Labor’s Budgets of the GFC. Right on! However, why is it that no-one seems to remember the three or four years of disasters and their affect on the Budgets and economy – both national and state? Campbell Newman doesn’t mention them either, but you’d sort of expect that he’d remember 2011! If we start with Black Saturday, in February 2009 and the flooding which started in Qld in 2010 we have year after year of cyclones, fires, floods, ex-tropical cyclones, and east-coast lows. At one stage 75% of the eastern part of the country, from the Cape to Tasmania, was disaster declared. Then we had people sleeping on the beach in southern WA to escape fires. All these through the terms of a couple of national Labor governments, and until March 2012 under a Qld Labor government. In Queensland it started flooding in late 2010, continued into 2011, again early 2012, Cyclone Yasi, then and bushfires - millions of acres of central Queensland burned, as did parts of SEQ. Much of the State drought declared at least once. Only ex-tropical cyclone Oswald, and the November 2012 ‘Super-cell’ came on Cammy’s watch. Years of disasters, recoveries, rebuilding. Lost business and revenue. Lost mining output. Lost tourism. Lost homes and lost people. Billions of $$s. NOT good for the economy and in noone’s Budget before they started. I’m sure the LNP governments are rejoicing in the
‘weak El Nino’ and less drastic weather, but they can’t take the credit for it. And these people, these ‘politicians’ think they are more ‘productive’ than our paramedics, our teachers, nurses, emergency services workers, and the others who risk their lives daily – the police and the military? There is clearly something very wrong with their measures of ‘productivity’ …. and ‘worth’. P Davies Glass House Mountains
Altering Town Plans
On the subject of Development – until I experienced it I had never thought through the effects of altering Town Plans. When we bought our Hinterland home well over 10 years ago, we checked on possible future development and were told that the farming lands around us were zoned so they could only be sub-divided to ‘rural residential’ blocks between ¾ acre and 2+ acres. No-one even dreamed of 651 sq metre blocks in Glass House Mountains. They were most certainly not in the Town Plan that we bought under. Rural Res estates did not require these noise barriers. Now, we have Res A estates built and being built. ‘Noise Reduction’ fencing? I’m not sure whose noise the one opposite our homes is reducing, but it is most definitely not ours. The traffic noise here has at least doubled – where sound used to just fade away over farming fields it now bounces strait back at us off the ‘noise reduction’ barrier. Cars. Trucks. Buses. Hoons. And then we have the light pollution. In addition to the existing two streetlights we now have 10 new streetlights shining directly into our bedroom window and are unable to sleep with the windows and blinds open. (Which also impacts our power bills as we have to keep a fan running all night, most nights.) Additionally, there are five new streetlights shining into our lounge room and the light from the previously existing lights bounces back off the ‘noise’ fencing straight into our homes. The cheap, tiny plantings that have gone in against that fencing do absolutely nothing to alleviate the nuisance created by this estate and are not going to be big enough to do anything for probably a couple of years yet. I sort of assume that the Mayor and the ‘prodevelopment’ groups are able to go to bed at night and have their windows and blinds open if they choose! Lucky them. No-one is sacrificing

Where is the loyalty?
I completely agree with Leonie Hall’s letter (GCNews, December 3). We have this great new extension to the shopping centre at Beerwah which had the potential for a variety of shops which were not available previously. So what did we get? We lost the popular Jewellers, Smileys. We gained three new coffee/ food shops in addition to the two we already had. Smileys are closing because they had to move or move out. Where is the loyalty to existing businesses in this complex? How many coffee / takeaway food shops can a complex of this size support? Wouldn’t a shoe shop have been nice? Or any other type of shop that we don’t already have. The shopping centre owners / management should leave Smileys where they are and look for a more diverse range of shops for this centre. I wish Smileys all the best for the future. If we all protest, maybe people power will result in a change of heart from the centre owners / management. A. Husband Landsborough

Merry Christmas everyone! Thanks to the letter writer in last week's GCNews for raising his concerns about the difficulties that some elderly people have in attending my ‘out and about’ sessions. I arrange these sessions for those who find it convenient to be able to drop in and have a talk at a central location in their town. However I wouldn't want anyone to think they were the only way of letting me know what was concerning them. For those who are having trouble with transport, I am happy to come to your house or at a place of your choosing to discuss any local issues. Generally, I also like to meet on-site if the issue concerns a particular piece of land or a road, as it is easier to see what the solutions could be when I can see the problem in front of me. New Year towers
With Christmas coming up and a break for some, NBN towers in Maleny and Beerwah district will not go away. When the year resumes in January the prospect of large 30/40 metre towers looms over our communities. What will you get? You will not get ‘super-fast broadband’, it’s a myth. Residents in areas with towers tell us they are unreliable. You will lose property values if they’re near you. Local real estate offices tell us visitors looking for property want to know where towers may be put. Estimates are your property can be devalued by 25%, and up to 30%. Tourism is affected with their visual impact dotting our tourism rich landscape. Contracts - if you consider taking a contract with NBN life will never be the same. You need to take out $10 million extra insurance cover and you will be caught up for 20 years. Your children or potential buyers will not be able to take over without signing onto NBN. NBN doesn't tell potential clients that. NBN has not been honest and transparent with our community - little information was provided at the forums as to location or the safety of towers. NBN will not use the words - 'microwave' or 'tower'. These microwave towers offer no benefits for us and will blight us for 20 years to come. Richard Giles Conondale
Past time for action
Yes please, please do something about the Reed Street / Steve Irwin Way intersection. Not only does the traffic build up along Reed Street during peak hours and when the traffic is diverted along Steve Irwin Way, there have been many near misses, screeching of brakes and tooting of horns. The ‘powers that be’ should spend an afternoon there, rather than 10 minutes, to get a true indication of what it is like. (Maybe they could volunteer at the RSL, as we have in the past, to see the real problem). Come on Andrew, you asked us to give you a rev up if we thought you were getting off track this is a rev up. Intersection inaction
Perhaps our local Minister Powell is appealing to the Glass House Communities’ patience before committing funds to completely re-construct the one and only entrance, off Steve Irwin Way, into the Glass House proper. Is he asking us to be patient and wait for a fatality or serious injury before adequate funding is miraculously made available to install a reliable traffic management system (that’s traffic lights Minister)? Or does he think, as most politicians appear to do today, that once the electorate is wooed into voting for them, further responsibility that has been democratically placed with them, is no longer obliged to be delivered? Perhaps the community needs to convince Minister Powell of the benefit a safe intersection would make to say, Rome whoops, I mean Brisbane. ‘Cause as most rural communities know, albeit they be within one hour drive of Rome...blast, sorry, I mean Brisbane and all roads lead there, don’t they? Well it’s obvious to me that we peons will just have to make do. There are plenty of us, plenty more where we come from right? I drive through this intersection every day, travelling to work. On most days I’m gob smacked at the number of drivers who completely ignore the stop sign. Turning right or left makes no difference and being bipped from behind when you do stop... well that’s an experience in itself. Perhaps, Minister, with an installed set of traffic lights, the incentive may be there for drivers to use that middle pedal. And in support of Mr Dale West’s observation (GCNews December 3) if there’s any scratching to be done, other than that of anatomy, why not the sound of a pen scratching on a cheque! Come on Minister the time for emulating the Scarlet Pimpernel is long over. Your electorate is waiting to hear from you. Kevin Glass House Mountains

I would like to congratulate The Member for Glasshouse Mr Powell on spending thousands of dollars of taxpayer’s money on removing the ‘Give Way’ sign at the intersection of Steve Irwin Way and the Donnybrook Road. This is certainly a great Road Safety effort. I have lived in the Hinterland area for almost 15 years and pass through this intersection on a regular basis and can count on one hand the number of times I have seen a motorist held at this removed ‘Give Way’ Sign. Surely the money spent here would have been better spent on improving the exit and entrance to Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains? Name supplied Beerwah

It’s raining cats and dogs While exciting for some, fireworks, thunder and lightning can be very frightening for our furry friends. Community Partnership Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said unfortunately the onset of storm season and end-of-year events with fireworks could mean an increase in the number of stray animals reported to Sunshine Coast Council. “We are calling on owners to please take extra care of their cats and dogs and ensure they are safely contained within their property, particularly during storms or when there are firework displays nearby,” Cr McKay said. “If you have a pet that is fearful of loud noises consider making them a safe place, upstairs with you or a safe dark space outside. “In their panic, pets can often somehow manage to escape properties you think impenetrable. “If they experience true distress, consider consulting your vet for options to help keep them calm. “If you find a stray pet or your pet is missing, phone council on 5475 7272.” Council works closely with fellow Pet Partnership Group members – including the Australian Veterinary Association, 4Paws Animal Rescue, Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge and the RSPCA

President of 4 Paws, Julie Penlington said they were also inundated with lost animals following a storm or celebratory event involving fireworks and many of the pets did not have any identification or it was not up-to-date. “The storm season always reinforces the importance of having your animal registered and microchipped,” Ms Penlington said. “Registered and microchipped dogs and cats can quickly be reunited with their owners if they stray. “Also remember to ensure your pet’s microchip and registration details are up-to-date with your microchip register to help council, the vet or lost animal shelter to reunite you quickly and easily. “If your pet goes missing and your microchip details are not up-to-date and you do not know which database the chip is registered to, visit council’s website for some simple tips about how to resolve this quickly,” she said. All dogs and cats must be registered and wear a council-issued registration tag when in public. Significant reduction in registration fees apply for desexed and microchipped dogs and cats, and for pensioners.

School News Swimming carnival success Contributed by Katrina DeClara Fine, warm weather ensured the Beerburrum State School Inter-House Swimming Carnival was going to be a good day with lots of swimmers keen to dive into the pool. Prep to Year 3 participated in some fun races, while U8’s to U13’s hit the pool for 25m and 50m races. There were war cries and cheers to encourage all the swimmers and it was great to see all the students getting involved. It was fabulous to see students giving it their best effort and making it a fun day with lots of friendly rivalry between Flinders, Norfolk and Bongaree. This year the Prep to Year 2 staff joined together to sing Joy to the World much to the delight of the young children. It was such a popular item that there are already calls for the teacher performance to become part of the tradition.

Contributed by Kylie Merola Imagine cooking every week with Jamie Oliver, well that’s not quite what’s happened but it’s the next best thing for three students from Landsborough State School. Jackson Browne, Bayley Hatchman-Luhr and Ryan Appleton Elshout, enrolled in a Jamie Oliver Ministry of Food class which has run for the past five weeks at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Every Friday, the boys, along with their teacher, Mrs Pam Dawkins, have joined the other nine students in the class to learn some handy cooking hints and perfect their cooking skills. Each class has concentrated on a different aspect of cooking, always with an emphasis on using fresh, local produce to create tasty, healthy dishes. Every class begins with a demonstration by the food technician. Then the participants move to their cooking bench and repeat what they have observed. The boys learnt how to time a boiled egg, poach a perfect egg, made a feta and spinach frittata and chicken fajitas. They learned to grill steak with mushroom sauce, and then moved on to Jamie’s famous meatballs with pasta and to end the course, a roast dinner. The boys have really enjoyed these classes and it has certainly made Fridays a day to look forward to. Let’s hope they remember what they have seen and done and can continue to cook for their families in the future. Your emotions and your heart
You might be surprised to learn that how you feel emotionally can have a big effect on your heart health. In fact, the relationship between depression and heart disease is a two-way street. Not only does depression appear to promote heart disease, but it can also result from a heart attack. And depression can sap your motivation, make it hard to concentrate, and leave you feeling hopeless — all of which can make it much harder to stick to a proactive treatment plan. Depression is also an important consideration for people with heart failure. For people with heart failure who are also depressed, symptoms are likely to worsen more quickly. One study demonstrated that the rate of death and hospitalisations among depressed individuals with heart failure is much higher than in those who don't show signs of depression. And, while depression is more common in women with heart failure, it appears that depression tends to be more severe in men with heart failure. The good news is that depression can be treated successfully. And research has shown that for people with both heart conditions and depression, treating the depression can improve outcomes for the heart condition. In people who’ve had a heart attack, for example, treating depression can reduce the risk of another heart-related event. Medication is one option, but as a natural health practitioner, I always advise ‘least invasive first’. This means first try things that have little to no side effects, such as counselling, therapy, meditation, prayer, etc. If that is unsuccessful, then consider medication or other options. Be sure to speak with your doctor about which options are best for you. Research has shown that managing depression can lead to better self-care and fewer symptoms in people with heart failure. Don’t let depression get in the way of your health and living your optimal life. Be proactive with your health, physically, emotionally, and nutritionally.

Christmas at Bankfoot House
Ethel Burgess vividly remembers Christmas dinners around the big red cedar table (constructed 1868) in Bankfoot House. “We’d be packed around the big table, kids and adults, about 14 of us,” Ethel recalled. “There’d be auntie Ellie and uncle Jim and their girls Ailsa, Jean and Yvonne, and uncle Ken, auntie Dot and their daughter, June.” Plus Ethel and her parents, Bill and Jean, and later her brother, Graham. Ethel added, “As well as grandfather and grandma, of course.” William Smith Burgess and Clementina Burgess nee Grigor. “Sometimes some of the Ferris family would be there, too. My cousin, Kevin, with auntie Mary and uncle Jack.” There was always a roast chook - a special treat in those days - with hot vegetables. “Afterwards there was Christmas pudding and custard, with hidden threepences and sixpences. Grandma always made sure when she was slicing the pudding that we kids found a coin,” she said. A pine tree was decorated as the Christmas tree and there’d be crepe paper streamers looped around the veranda, streamers that the children had made together some time before. “Grandma would give us some crepe paper, scissors and a pot of glue. She knew that’d keep us busy for a while.” Ethel’s brother was born in January 1946, but young Graham and his grandfather were not destined to spend a Christmas together. “Grandfather was thrilled with a Burgess boy,” Ethel said. “He’d wheel Graham around in the cane pram and talk to him. “I won’t be here when you grow up. There’s a lot I want to tell you – get a good education, finish school and go to uni if you can,” he’d say. Graham must have been listening, for he studied veterinary science and then gained a PhD in microbiology and virology. Christmas 1946 was the first without WS Burgess. “Grandfather died in July 1946, when Graham was only six months old,” Ethel said. Interested in learning more about Bankfoot House? Maleny Christmas Carnival The annual Christmas Carnival will be held on Friday, December 12 from 6.00pm to 10.00pm, in Maple Street, which ties in well for the kids who will be just finishing school then. There will be rides for all ages, including a carousel and laughing clowns for the younger kids, jumping castles (including one for big ‘kids’), climbing wall and the Hurricane for those with strong stomachs! Entertainment will include wide range of live music and entertainment for everyone. There will be the crowd favourites including B Different Dance Group, Christmas Carols, Unusual Suspects, Lizzy and Jem, Consultants of Swing and lots more. There will also be a puppet show for kids, free face painting, a photo booth and a fire twirling presentation. Along with great food venues with fantastic diversity, and a creative projected light display by local artist Corrie Wright, and of course Santa will visit too.
Christmas Tree Festival
Visitors will catch the spirit of a musical Christmas when they walk through an enchanting forest of Christmas trees at the Christmas Tree Festival at the Maleny Uniting Church, 1284 MalenyLandsborough Road, Maleny. This year the trees are decorated to the theme ‘Christmas songs and carols’, there will be lots to lift the spirit and catch your imagination. Into its third year, the festival will have trees contributed from a wide range of community organisations. Each year the festival supports a local not-for-profit organisation. This year community donations will go the Blackall Range Care Group based in Flaxton who are in the process of increasing its availability in Maleny by establishing an office at the Maleny Hospital. The Festival times are as follows Friday, December 19, 4.00pm – 8.00pm, Saturday, December 20, 4.00pm – 8.00pm, Sunday, December 21, 12.00noon – 4.00pm, Monday, December 22, 4.00pm – 8.00pm, Tuesday, December 23, 4.00pm – 7.00pm, Wednesday, December 24, 4.00pm – 7.00pm, followed by Christmas Eve service and Christmas Day Service at 8.00am. Make sure you bring a rug, a chair and your best singing voice when you head to the Beerwah Sports Ground for the Glasshouse Country Community Carols from 5.00pm on Saturday, December 13. “The program looks fantastic and includes a range of local talent including Cassi Hilbers, Angus Woodhead, Rhiannon Lindsay, the Superdads and of course a fireworks finale that will be sure to impress. Pastor Rod Jobe from Church on the Rise said carols have been organised in the Glasshouse area for over 10 years with Church on the Rise initially holding them in Landsborough. “In 2010 we were moved to the Beerwah Sportsground which is a more central and bigger venue,” Pastor Jobe said. “Over the past few years we have come under a united banner of local churches and community organisations. “The Council funding now enables us to run a free family event that has grown in popularity over the years. “People come because they love the atmosphere of the evening and the fireworks are a brilliant climax to the evening," he said.

Landsborough Flying Fox colony update
A recent meeting with residents affected by a local flying fox colony was constructive and informative. Council staff presented an overall picture of roosts across the region and a more detailed report on the Landsborough roost. This was followed by discussion on some actions to help alleviate residents’ key concerns. It was agreed that selective vegetation removal will be undertaken and installation of an acoustic wall will be investigated further. It was also agreed that a follow-up meeting to include world authority on Australian Bats Dr Les Hall will be held early in the New Year.

Beerburrum festivities
It was a pleasure to attend the recent annual Beerburrum Children’s Christmas Party. If you haven’t seen it yet, the village hall is tucked away down Anzac Avenue and did a great job of hosting an authentic country town Children’s Christmas Party. It had the traditional barbecue underpinning an impressive program of children’s activities, lots of giveaways and a great local Santa to bring smiles to the faces of young and old.

Well deserved recognition for local business
Congratulations to Maleny Cheese for being recognised as part of the 2014 Queensland Tourism Awards. They were one of 10 Sunshine Coast tourism operators and organisations awarded at Brisbane’s Royal International Convention Centre on Friday, November 28.
Land for Wildlife continues to grow and flourish
And what a successful year it has been for Council’s Land for Wildlife Officers and the Land for Wildlife program. This voluntary conservation program supports landholders as they conserve wildlife and habitats on their properties. The program protects more non-remnant vegetation in the Sunshine Coast local government area than all other tenures combined, including state and council land. Thanks to the officers’ hard work and dedication, 75 new properties have joined the program in the past 12 months. This is the highest number of new properties for any year, since the program’s inception in 1998. It is also the highest number for any of the participating Councils in SEQ, accounting for approximately 36% of all new signups for the entire SEQ region in 2014.

Gmelina leichhardtii This beautiful well known tree is naturally found from southern NSW to the Blackall Range here on the Sunshine Coast, with pockets found in north Queensland. Mature species can reach 30m in height and can be found on mountain slopes as well as alluvial soils along riverbanks in subtropical rainforests. White Beech is a great shade tree if in a large garden. This time of year it can be easily identified with its blue purple fruit in autumn. The leaves are large pale green in colour with a hairy underside as are the branchlets. Unlike Red Cedar, this tree has not recovered very well after logging in the 19th and 20th centuries. Widely utilised in the marine industry and flooring, the timber is grey-white and durable. Mooloolah Native Nursery will be celebrating Australia Day in the New Year with a ‘Plant a Native’ campaign. Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Fire and Native Plants
The mention of fire is enough to make our blood run cold, however bushfires play an important role in many Australian ecosystems. Though rainforests and mangroves are damaged by fire, other vegetation, such as eucalypt forest, heath and grasslands, are adapted to particular fire regimes, often regenerating quickly after a bush fire. Some species, such as some banksias, have thick bark that protects the trunk from the fire, while others, e.g. many eucalypts, resprout from buds or even from the roots, after fires. Other plants, called obligate seeders, are killed by fire, however their seeds are released before or after the fire into the bed of nutrient-rich ashes. When good rains arrive, chemicals from the smoke held in the ash help to trigger the germination of the seeds. Grasstrees, crinkle bushes or Lomatia, and Christmas bells flower profusely after a fire. Seeds of many casuarinas, hakeas and leptospermum species, protected in woody cones, can remain dormant and resist predation for years, until a fire passes through, at which time the seeds are released. Fire serves other purposes, such as opening up the canopy, allowing sunlight to reach the ground, and eliminating diseases and insects which could affect seedling growth. The aboriginal people used small, low-intensity fires to reduce the build-up of old and dead foliage in the understorey, thus preventing the occurrence of high-intensity damaging fires. However, too frequent fires can seriously reduce or even eliminate populations from certain areas, by killing seedlings and young plants before they reach fruiting age.

It’s always Christmas for one inner-city pensioner and his retired daughter interstate. Eighty-nine-year-old John has lived in the same apartment for 52 years and John's step-daughter Ilona lives on the coast. Ilona was constantly worried about her dad living alone after her mother moved to a nursing home and then passed away some years ago. John now gets a free daily phone call from Red Cross to check he's safe and well, and Ilona is so grateful she now volunteers as a Red Cross caller herself. John’s daily Red Cross phone call gives Ilona great peace of mind. She rings her dad as often as she can but she says it's a great comfort to know someone has always checked on her father by 8.00am every morning. “It's hard to rely on friends and neighbours,” says Ilona. “Neighbours can go away for a

At this Christian festival of Christmas, we gather with family and friends for great meals and parties. Some people go on holidays; some of us, to varying degrees, decorate our house (and front garden). We also go shopping for presents, send out cards, letters or emails, and we catch up with people. Many people also take the opportunity to come to Church to worship and give thanks to God. Coming to Church is important for us in many ways. We gather as a community, moving beyond our individual relationship with God – expressing our relationship in company with others. This is valuable for us as we express out membership of the body of Christ. This time of year can simply be a frenzy of shopping, partying and gift-giving. It can also be a time in which busy and tired people draw breath and take a day off and simply rest. As Christians, we see deeper meaning.

The San Training Centre was the venue for a fun day of activities recently to help raise over $300.00 towards the four players travelling to Adelaide to compete in the Australian National Taekwondo Championships. Students from San Taekwondo Beerwah and Maleny were joined by students from the Ki Taekwondo club at Narangba for a day of friendly competition. Some of the highlights were seeing the tiny juniors mixing it up on the mats as well the more skilled children, teens and adults showing the skills of aspiring champions. A highest kick competition for all ages was run with the open division being closely contested between Alek McMurray and Liam Riley. Liam eventually won with a massive jump of 2.53 metres. The San Team of Aaron Lerch, Cameron Taylor, Leo Michael and Siena Cameron will all compete at the nationals. Siena will defend her gold medal and national champion title from last year and Cameron will be hoping to go one better than his silver from last year. Coach Norm Taylor said “I am confident the athletes will be very competitive at the event and I hope to build on the success of last year. All of the players have had great preparations and worked hard.”

The Ladies’ Day Christmas Luncheon on Wednesday was well attended by our bowlers, retired bowlers and Life Members. A social game of ‘Scroungers’ was played with Chris Freshwater winning the day, Vic Muscat in second place and Carolyn Malcomson third. A wonderful day was had by all and a big ‘thank you’ goes to Noelle Dean, our Ladies’ President, for organising the day. Thursday’s ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Rodney Dick and Vic Muscat with two wins and 44 points and the Runners-up on a count-back, with the most points in either game were Peter Astbury and Trevor Bertram with 24 points and a margin of +14 in Game 1, from Kerry Capern and Kevin Beasley with a margin of +13. Around 50 members and guests enjoyed themselves at the annual Presentation of Trophies at the Christmas Luncheon on Saturday. Our Club Chairman and Men’s President, Graham Nicholson, presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up of the 2014 Club Championships and Certified Competitions. The last Club games for the year will be Ladies’ Day on Wednesday, December 17 and ‘Open Pairs’ on Thursday, December 18, as the green is to be taken out soon after for its annual refurbishment. After the golf game we all gathered in the clubhouse for a few laughs (it’s amazing what you can do with a couple of balloons and a pair of pantyhose!). With a little divine intervention, Barb Whitfield guessed the closest in our chocolate guessing game. A few of the girls have been practicing for months on their skits and once again the dancers brought the house down. All in all, a great day was had. It will be a hard act to follow, but we will try to top it next year. From the ladies at Beerwah Golf, and their committee, I would like send our best wishes to everyone for a safe and joyous Christmas and a happy New Year.
It’s amazing how much fun you can have when everyone gets into the Christmas spirit, and that’s just what happened at our Christmas Breakup Party. We had 77 girls play nine holes and 81 enjoy a lovely lunch. The best team on the day were Pat Chapman, Janelle Balfe, Sue Wood and Fay Raven. Runners up were Karen Kemp, Nicole Purvis, Cindy Godfrey and Jo Eccles. We also had a second runner up and that was won by Barb Drury, Denise Kirkby, Joan Swyny and Joan Fletcher. All the winners took home a basket of Christmas goodies. Nearest to the Pins were won by Lea Garner, Lea Doyle, Noelene Annakin and Margaret Zonca on number 2. Our most colourful group took out the NTP on number 5, Beerwah Glasshouse United Football club is holding Lyn Nichols, Karen our holiday clinics these upcoming holidays, Gannon, Mavis Brimelow and Val Turner. aimed at the U6-14 age groups.
