Hi Everyone... Most readers know how much I love being part of the local community and sharing with you all that is happening across the different communities that make up Glasshouse Country and Maleny. However, I am never sure if we are getting it right and whether we are meeting the information needs of Barbara (66) of Beerwah, Lauren (22) of Landsborough or Warren (39) of Witta. So my approach has always been to include a range of stories, information and photos that reflect the broad interests of the whole community and hope that there is something for everyone. Community newspapers these days are part of a very different media environment, with so much information now available via social media and online, so we have decided it is time to do some research to try to understand your changing needs. To do this we are developing a survey to be included in upcoming editions of the newspaper. We would really appreciate it if you could share your insights and feedback. We want to get it right to ensure that we can continue to bring local news to you into the future in a way that works best for everyone.

Local News Our skating superstar By Sonia Clark Mooloolah’s 13-year-old Haylie Powell is currently ranked Queensland state champion in the open women’s division of street skateboarding. A keen supporter of women in skateboarding, she has travelled the country promoting the sport. With the 2020 Olympics rapidly approaching, Haylie has set her sights high and is currently gaining points through the international qualification system. Recently the skating superstar returned from the US after competing in the Dew Tour Long Beach 2019 competition in California, where 28 women from 14 countries competed but only 12 achieved their Olympic point earning potential. Haylie qualified third in the competition and has made it to the quarter finals. Her mum Heidi said that due to Haylie’s outstanding performance, there was a strong likelihood she would be invited to future events. These competitions form part of an Olympic pathway for Haylie and contribute to her world ranking status. She has been invited to the next Street League competition, which is also an Olympic qualifier, in Los Angeles at the end of this month. Haylie was initially introduced to the sport by her dad around seven years ago and she picked up her skills by watching and learning from older kids. However, Heidi said that these days Haylie’s talent totally surpassed her dad’s!

She is a great ambassador in relation to skateboarding and women in sport,” Heidi said. A major development at Palmview is set to boost the area as an active and outdoor lifestyle tourism destination and bring almost $100 million a year into the local economy. Situated on the Bruce Highway 1.4km north of Aussie World and next to the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge, the largely forested 49ha block of land is set to be transformed into a major tourism precinct under a development application submitted to Sunshine Coast Council. The land is currently zoned rural, with the material change of use application seeking to establish an integrated tourism precinct. According to the application report, this will include a mix of indoor and outdoor recreation and leisure activities, low impact accommodation, cultural tourist attractions and food-based tourism facilities that “… showcase the region’s active lifestyle and environmental attributes and provides opportunities to deliver a paddock to plate experience”. • An Indigenous cultural centre providing tourism experiences that draw on the knowledge, resources and skills of Indigenous people The Indigenous cultural centre proposal will see art, food and cultural activity involving a variety of components including authentic traditional products and arts, an art gallery and shop, Indigenous song and dance shows, cultural demonstrations, a cultural information centre, Indigenous workshops for students and tourists, bush tucker nature walks, cultural tourism tours and the making and sale of Indigenous foods. Building heights are planned to be kept to 12m or below, which is over the 8.5m allowable height under council’s planning scheme. Under the original proposal, the developer wanted to include a 30m tall “short-term accommodation” building, presumably a multistorey hotel-style complex. However, this aspect was removed from the plans after early consultations with council when it was flagged as a potentially significant visual impact problem that would be incompatible within a rural setting. The access to the development would be off the new western service road to be constructed as part of the current Bruce Highway upgrade. As there is no water or sewerage services available, stage one of the development will require on-site sewerage treatment and water capture. Planning for future stages recognises the necessity to connect to sewer and potable water networks.

An economic impact study suggests that the development may be of significant benefit to the area. Maleny Show attendance record By Lea Parkes and Sonia Clark This year was the 82nd Maleny Show and GC&M News received a tip off from a Maleny local to try to catch up with Colin Carbery who has attended every Maleny Show since the event resumed in 1948 following World War II. We were fortunate to meet up with 90-year-old Colin and his 83-year-old younger brother Vince to find out a little more about this remarkable attendance record. Colin and Vince’s family moved to Maleny on June 15, 1940 and the following month the family relocated to Witta, where their father took up dairy share farming. Vince, who also shares a significant show attendance record, remembers that in his younger days he would enter his horse in show competitions, which would mean he would have to ride in from Witta. “I remember on those days that I would have to leave our home in Witta rather early to get to the show on time,” Vince laughed. As this year’s show theme was ‘celebrating farmers past, present and future’, Colin’s 71 years of attendance certainly exemplifies that message. For around 10 years Colin was very involved in Dexter cattle and was proud to have them show ready, and he has always been actively involved in poultry. Since poultry was re-introduced to the show, for the past 30 years or so Vince has also been a long-time poultry steward.

Colin and Vince Carbery at this year’s Maleny Show Colin has gained immense enjoyment from attending the Maleny Show and even when his health has been less than ideal, he has made it a point of pride to attend. Vince has also attended all but a couple of years of the Maleny Show, when he lived at Jandowae but he did keep up his show tradition and attended the Jandowae Show during that time. Vince suggests that one of the main reasons that Colin never missed a show was the incredible sense of community and camaraderie that brought rural communities together year after year. “Colin loves being part of the show community and especially the camaraderie of meeting other like-minded people. “He has always enjoyed catching up with friends at the show and reminiscing and remembering people and previous show events,” Vince said.

Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club By Lea Parkes Over the past couple of years I have often seen beautiful, obviously very loved vintage cars on display at local events, and taken photos and chatted to the fellas who own them, learning they were members of the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club. When I first heard the name I assumed that the club must be just about historic vehicles. However, I recently went along to one of the club’s regular Wednesday morning catch ups at their shed at the Maleny Pioneer Village and learnt much more. Q. What is the club all about? Club secretary Dave Carmichael explained the club’s objectives, saying that the club focus is to encourage the preservation, restoration and operation of motor vehicles that are veteran (up to 1919), vintage (up to 1930), historic (up to 1939) as well as classic (all vehicles of special interest, no age specified). They encourage the exchange of technical knowledge between members, as well as fostering expertise and skills required for vehicle restoration.

By Lea Parkes At the beginning of May, GC&M News reported on the wonderful success of both Frances Ross, the store manager, and the Shell Beerwah team’s awards as part of the annual Viva Energy (Shell) Conference. As part of the awards Frances was invited to attend Smiling Stars, the global Shell reward and recognition event that is a gathering of staff from all the top performing Shell sites from around the world. “It is a celebration, a thank you from Shell and an opportunity to network and get to know our colleagues from the many different parts of the globe,” Frances said. The event saw 1,200 attendees from 65 countries come together for the first time in Australia. Although Francis didn’t get to travel to the other side of the world for the event, she said Sydney was a fantastic destination. “I was absolutely thrilled to get to experience Sydney alongside our overseas visitors. The opening event took place at Luna Park, the conference was held at the Opera House and the main events were held in the Darling Harbour area.” As part of the event, all the top achievers competed against each other to take out the prize for the best in the world. Frances said the highlight for her was representing the fabulous team at Shell Beerwah. She was also really pleased to be able to represent Australia with her fellow team members and to have the opportunity to meet people doing the same as she does on a daily basis from across the world. “We have met many people who we now call friends. “We are hoping to be invited to the event in 2020 that is being held in London. The countdown is on … let’s see if we can do it again next year,” Frances said.

Community News Free electric bike tryout
Sunshine Coast residents will have their last opportunity to have a free tryout on an electric bike at Beerwah on Saturday, July 27. The tryout is part of a series of monthly electric bike rides that have been organised by the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) with grant funding from Sunshine Coast Council. President Vivien Griffin said that the rides had been organised as part of SCEC’s commitment to more sustainable transport options. “We believe that electric bikes can make the choice to leave the car at home easy and fun, and the best way for people to find out about them is to have a go,” she said. “We have now organised 11 rides throughout the Sunshine Coast and participants have all enjoyed the experience and several have ended up buying an electric bike.” The ride will start with a safety and technical briefing, and then head out on off-road pathways or quiet back streets, returning by 10am for a friendly morning tea. The Beerwah ride will start at the Beerwah Library, on Peachester Road, and riders are asked to register at ebikerides18@gmail.com or phone 0407 116 105. By Lea Parkes A little bit of rain wasn’t enough to stop Cr Rick Baberowski trying out the new timber balancing logs at Skippy Park at Landsborough last Friday morning. We caught up with the councillor when he was out taking a look at the work that Sunshine Coast Council officers completed just in time for the school holidays.
The project replaced the climbing tree and was delivered at a cost of $60,000. The overall project includes new timber balance logs, climbing net (spider’s web) and a top up of the sand as well as minor turf works. A handful of timber uprights have been hand crafted to include Australian animals and create imaginative play.

30th anniversary of Medieval Festival
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Caboolture’s Abbey Medieval Festival. The Abbey Medieval Tournament weekend is always the biggest drawcard of the festival, with more than 20,000 attendees last year, making it the largest medieval festival in Australia. This year the tournament weekend runs Saturday-Sunday, July 13-14 with gates open at 9am both days. The weekend features a massive range of entertainment with something to suit everyone. Crowd viewing favourites over the weekend showcase a variety of medieval battle-style tournaments and include everything from archery and jousting to Turkish oil wresting and sword fighting. Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology director Edith Cuffe OAM said she was excited about the program for the festival’s 30th year. “The draw of the festival has only increased in the past few years, with television shows such as ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Vikings’ inviting a whole new crowd to experience the Middle Ages,” Mrs Cuffe said. With a new generation of medieval lovers who want to experience a slice of a medieval-inspired fantasy world, the Abbey Medieval Tournament weekend is a wonderful opportunity to be get some authentic insights into a bygone era. The Maleny RSL and Maleny Lions kicked off their regular weekly Friday morning bingo sessions at the RSL Hall in February. While they have built up a regular group of people who attend, they have decided to try Tuesday for the sessions to see if this suits more local bingo players. The doors open at 10am with eyes down from 10.30am. Cost to play is $20 for 16 games and includes morning tea. You don’t have to be part of Lions or the RSL sub branch as everyone is welcome and you definitely don’t have to be an expert. Just come along and have some fun. Bingo gets people together for a great morning of social fun, and is great exercise for your brain because it is fantastic for concentration and memory. Contributed by John Andrews The Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild recently played host to renowned English wood turner Chris Pouncy, who is touring Australia doing demonstrations as a part of the Robert Sorby 2019 Tour in conjunction with Carbatec. He presented to 30 woodies, men and women, including woodies from other clubs in the shed at Montville. The three-hour demonstration was packed with useful information and handy hints and included demonstrations on faceplate and spindle turning. Contributed by Gordon Reddick The Coochin Creek Bushland Group will hold its next working bee on Tuesday, July 16 starting at 7.30am and knocking off at about 10.30am. For some time now we have been concentrating on planting and weeding on the edge of the reserve next to Caralan Park. Last month we removed glycine weed from the area approaching the rock pools and this month we plan to operate further into the reserve and seek out the invasive weeds that thrive in the shade. The normal culprits are ochna, coral berry, palms not indigenous to the area and the like. We do this work in conjunction with the Community Conservation Department of the Sunshine Coast Council, which supplies all of the equipment and the guidance we need. Tools, protective gear, sunscreen and mozzie spray are all supplied, and also a cup of tea and biscuit to end the session. Participation is free and, as always, anybody interested in bush care or wishing to take a good look at the inside of the reserve located right on the edge of our town, is welcome to join us. If you do, please wear good shoes, long pants, a long sleeve shirt and a hat. We will start by meeting at the gate to Caralan Park, which is at the corner of Emma Place and Caralan Way in Beerwah. ATO puts the brakes on dodgy car claims The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is again making work-related car expenses a key focus during tax time 2019. This follows ATO warnings last year that work-related car expenses would face greater scrutiny. Assistant commissioner Karen Foat said the ATO was still concerned that some taxpayers were not getting the message that over claiming would be detected and, if deliberate, penalties would apply. “While some people do make legitimate mistakes, we are concerned that many people are deliberately making dodgy claims in order to get a bigger refund. We see taxpayers claiming
for things like private trips, trips they didn’t make and car expenses their employer paid for or reimbursed them for,” Ms Foat said. The ATO’s sophisticated analytics compares taxpayer claims with others earning similar amounts in similar jobs. Where the ATO identifies questionable claims, it will contact taxpayers and ask them to show how they have calculated their claim. In some cases, where further scrutiny is warranted, the ATO may even contact employers to confirm whether a taxpayer was required to use their own car for work-related travel. “Simply driving between work and home is not
enough to warrant a deduction. You must have a work-related need to travel while performing your job, like traveling from site-to-site or be required to transport bulky tools,” Ms Foat said.

Single Touch Payroll From July 1 employers must report payments such as wages, PAYG withholding and superannuation information to the ATO each time they pay employees (eg, weekly, fortnightly or monthly, depending on their pay cycle) and not just at the end of the financial year. Businesses with less than 19 employees have until September 30 to be compliant. Many businesses are already reporting through Single Touch Payroll and will not issue employees with income statements (payment summaries). These will be made available through your myGov account or your tax agent can access them.

You Said It Re: LNP mistruths
In the letter from Ken Dyer (GC&M News, July 3) there are a number of errors in fact, including that the Beerburrum to Landsborough rail duplication was completed in April 2009, not 2012 as claimed in the letter. It is a matter of public record that the Caboolture to Beerburrum rail duplication was completed in 2009. Sadly, it was Labor who cancelled the follow on Beerburrum to Landsborough works in April 2009. It broke a then $300 million contract with the TrackStar Alliance to do so. The LNP did not cancel the project. The works ceased literally 24 days after Andrew Powell won the state seat of Glass House, where the works were occurring, after Labor won the March 2009 election. It was the LNP who announced Sunshine Coast rail duplication for $532 million as a promise for the upcoming election but lost that election in January 2015. This was at the end of their first term in Parliament. Labor have been in power in Queensland for 25 of the past 30 years, this December. It is also incorrect to say that the money set aside for the rail duplication was diverted to the $4.4 billion next generation rolling stock (NGR) trains ordered in 2013, when the rail works ended in 2009. It is more likely (but never been confirmed) that the money went into building the Springfield duplication line, which started construction in July 2010 and was opened in 2013. To say that not one of the NGR trains have hit the tracks in a productive capacity, is also incorrect. Currently there are over 50 of these trains in

service on the SEQ network. They currently operate on the Gold Coast line, Airport, Doomben, Northgate, Redcliffe, Springfield, Ipswich, Caboolture, Shorncliffe and Cleveland lines. We are yet to see them operate on the Sunshine Coast line, where a rail stabling yard at Woombye awaits their parking debut. The Sunshine Coast community is arguably the most well-informed of any populace in South East Queensland when it comes to matters and history of our rail duplication. Let's keep it that way. I was bemused by the comments of two of last week’s letter contributors. I think they did a poor job of research. The Caboolture–Beerburrum rail duplication was completed in 2008 not 2012 as claimed. At the time both state and federal governments were under Labor control. We can thank Anna Bligh and Kevin Rudd for not continuing to Landsborough. Road funding is quite interesting. From Brisbane south it has, historically, been split 50/50 between the state and feds. North of the Pine River it seems to be 80/20 feds/state. The recent Redcliff rail link was funded 60/40 between federal and state government. The current state government is prepared to spend 100% on funding Cross River rail in Brisbane. We are obviously lower down the pecking order when state government funding is involved. For 18 of the past 21 years we have had a Labor

Landsborough development falls over
For those locals following the development saga in Landsborough, the latest proposal to split up the block at 37 Maleny Street in Landsborough from one into eight residential lots (RAL19/0044) has been rejected by Sunshine Coast Council as the developer didn’t pay the required fees within the time allowed. Seeing they withdrew their previous plans for 23 multi-bedroom units and 10 rooming accommodation units and hastily made this current application instead, it begs the question as to what games the developer is actually playing. Two wheelchair safety petitions have now been presented to the Parliament to require new buses to be fitted with wheelchair restraints. The petitions EN0860 – seeking to require bus companies to supply secure areas for wheelchairs, and EN0861 – seeking to change Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule (ADR) 58/00 Requirements for Omnibuses Designed for Hire and Reward) 2006. Federal Member for Fisher Beerburrum chaplaincy fundraising This month I had the pleasure of speaking at the Beerburrum State School chaplaincy fundraising dinner in support of Chappy Steph Alksne and her great work. Children face complex social and environmental challenges and school chaplains provide support and guidance that makes no judgement. They bring hope to a young generation by giving them skills and strategies to face life's greatest challenges and they provide a listening ear to help young people in crises. I advocated strongly for more support from the government for our dedicated school chaplains and in the 2018 federal Budget we provided an extra $247 million to fund the National School Chaplaincy Program permanently. That means more than 3,000 schools, including in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, are now eligible to receive $20,000 in financial assistance per year, or $24,000 in remote areas. Crisis in the construction industry I have been working hard to avert a crisis in the construction sector, which could still see one of the Sunshine Coast’s most important industries grind to a halt. Private building certifiers, most of them mum and dad businesses, are finding it impossible to get the professional indemnity insurance they need because all the insurers are withdrawing from what they see as a risky market. Without insurance private certifiers can’t get licences. Without licensed private certifiers new building owners will not be able to occupy their buildings and builders and their sub-contractors and suppliers on the Sunshine Coast will not get paid. Industry has been telling Queensland Labor Minister Mick de Brenni about this crisis for more than a year and he did nothing until just last week. He has also ignored my independent report into this issue and its 122 recommendations to avoid problems like this for more than four years. The Minister’s action is long overdue and is a short-term measure. I sincerely hope that he has not already missed the chance to prevent this crisis coming to pass. Only time will tell whether insurers will be willing to re-enter the market at this late stage. I have already urged insurers to meet their social obligations and begin offering insurance for private certifiers once again without delay. However, by leaving it so long to act, Minister de Brenni has put the onus on himself to make sure that they do and that they offer reasonably priced policies for certifiers. I have been leading efforts to force the Minister to respond appropriately to this looming crisis and I will continue to fight to get a long-term solution. State Member for Glass House What does the latest state budget mean for Glass House? Budget week in Queensland Parliament was held from June 10–14 and it was an interesting week, to say the least. Unfortunately, it is a budget where the Premier and Treasurer will accumulate an extra $1.25 billion worth of tax from hard working Queenslanders such as you. I could perhaps understand that if I could see a return on much needed infrastructure – like stumping up the outstanding amount to get the North Coast rail duplication finally done. However, despite numerous petitions and pleas from residents and Sunshine Coast MPs that shortfall still remains. I’m disappointed because this burgeoning region needs shovels in the ground, now. The good news for Glass House is that $956,000 will be given to the Woodford P-10 State School for refurbishments. While those refurbishments won’t include upgrading the school to a P-12, I’m hoping it’s heading in the right direction. Sadly, that is all Labor have provided for the Glass House electorate, despite my pleas over many, many years for them to upgrade the deadly Maleny-Kenilworth Road, amongst others in the electorate. Mobile offices In an electorate of the size and diversity of Glass House, one of the best ways to represent you is to come to you – through my mobile offices. I try to do them as regularly as possible because while I’m always happy to catch up on any issue – at your place or mine – these mobile offices allow us to do so in a more casual setting. On Monday, August 5 I will be visiting Glass House Mountains, Peachester, Beerwah and Beerburrum. Tuesday, August 6 will put me in Maleny, Bald Knob, Conondale and Witta, and then on Wednesday, August 7 I will be stopping at Montville, Flaxton, Eudlo and Mooloolah Valley. I’ll follow these up by doing a tour of the southern half of the electorate with the new Member for Longman, Terry Young. On Wednesday, August 14 we will bring our mobile office to Wamuran, Mount Mee, Woodford and Ocean View. On Tuesday, August 15 we will roll through Upper Caboolture and Rocksberg/Moorina. Finally, on Friday, August 16 we will visit D'Aguilar, Delaneys Creek and Elimbah. Division 5 - Sunshine Coast Connecting our communities As you are likely aware, I am always prioritising and looking for funding opportunities to continue to upgrade the rural roads throughout my division. As such, I am delighted to share that council’s 2019/20 budget will deliver the sealing and upgrading of many of these council-controlled roads, ensuring they are safe for the community. To name a few, works are planned to widen Obi Lane in Maleny as well as upgrade Diamond Valley Road, Mooloolah to a sealed road, with construction scheduled to start by mid next year. Also in Mooloolah, there’s now a new pathway along Pagent Street providing a safe off-road option for both pedestrians and cyclists. But wait there’s more! Another highlight from the budget is most definitely our continued enhancement of our spectacular Mary Caincross Scenic Reserve in Maleny. We will be investing $100,000 in the renewal of the much-loved track in this rainforest reserve, which is absolutely necessary as yearly visitation numbers increase substantially each year, last year reaching more than 105,000. Meanwhile in Montville, $655,000 will be put towards an exciting new adventure play area at the Russell Family Park playground. Feral animal team award A massive congratulations to our feral animal and education control team on recently winning the 2016-2019 Queensland Pest Animal Team Award for Excellence at the Queensland Pest Animal and Weed Symposium dinner. Nominated by Biosecurity Queensland, the award was presented to the team “in recognition of achieving exceptional results in on ground pest animal management and delivering an outstanding contribution to pest animal management in Queensland”. Weed education Meanwhile, our vector and pest plant control team has been busy raising awareness with the rural communities at the giant rats tail grass field day at Conondale last week in partnership with AgForce, Biosecurity Queensland and Coochin Creek Co-Op. The day was a great success with around 100 rural landholders from across the Sunshine Coast turning up to learn about recent effective trials on pasture weed research and control across vast areas of Elgin Station using council’s weed control hire equipment and various herbicide application techniques. A highly qualified teaching professional, Silvia brings 30 years’ experience to her role. She has lectured at TAFE in early childhood studies and is constantly engaged with new developments in her industry to ensure that she provides excellence in teaching that benefits her own passion and the nurturing of her students. Silvia said she particularly loves engaging with the fourand five-year old children and looks forward to returning to the classroom environment. “I’m excited to be back in the classroom and my passion for early childhood teaching and the fun of the school ready room has definitely been reignited,” Silvia said. “I love being able to help the children build the skills and knowledge to ensure the smoothest transition possible to ‘big school’.”

Recently the centre has invested in a huge range of additional learning resources and equipment, with both the children and educators enjoying the wonderful new resources. Silvia explained that the centre will continue with its strong focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities as well as plenty of nature inspired play. Some examples of popular projects previously undertaken in the school ready room have included an intensive veg fun program, learning about the life cycle of lizards (including watching them hatch), building with project blocks, using counting and matching shapes skills, as well as using problem solving skills to make monster trucks. It meant we enjoyed Devonshire tea in a Maleny cafĂŠ, instead of a picnic by the lake, followed by lunch at Flaxton Gardens, which topped off a great outing. Our thanks go to Dagmar Ker, the organiser, and Andrew, our bus driver. We would like to thank Peter Bowler for the fabulous musical education he has given our group and Di Bowler for great morning teas. Sadly, due to ill health, Peter is unable to continue our monthly music morning. Our small club has been exceptionally blessed to be able to maintain so many sub-clubs. From the churches Chariots of fire In our parish last Sunday we read the account from the Old Testament of the end of the ministry of the prophet Elijah, where his successor Elisha sees Elijah being taken up to heaven in a whirlwind, accompanied by a chariot of fire. We are told that Elisha was persistent in his following of Elijah and so was present at the right moment when it came time to take up Elijah’s mantel. The chariot of fire was a sign of the power of God, who was in the midst of the lives of Elijah and Elisha. I was reminded, as I read this, of the 1981 film, ‘Chariots of Fire’, which tells the story of Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, British athletes in the 1920s. Liddell felt called to work as a missionary in China but he was also an accomplished runner. At the 1924 Olympics, Eric refused to run in the 100m trials on the Sabbath because of his beliefs and this made world headlines. For Liddell, just as for the Old Testament prophets, God was in the centre of all that he did. One scene recalls when Liddell accidentally missed a church prayer meeting because of his running and his sister accused him of no longer caring about God. Liddell told her that though he intended to return eventually to the China mission, he felt divinely inspired when running, and that not to run would be to dishonour God. He says: “I believe that God made me for a purpose. But He also made me fast and when I run, I feel his pleasure.� Liddell felt that all he did, the choices he made, were for a purpose. His stand at the Olympics probably made as much impression as his subsequent missionary. And that, I think, is what Elisha’s experience invites us to do. It was great to hear the lovely words from the current principal and school captains. After the ceremony, all were invited to morning tea in the hall and to judge the competition bench. Thanks to Jeff Bodley, Rob Morris and others who supplied plants to decorate the stage. Tuckeroo Cupaniopsis anacardioides If there is one native tree that is perfect for the garden, it is the tuckeroo. This attractive rounded evergreen tree grows quickly to 5-10m, can be pruned to shape, provides good shade or shelter, does not have invasive roots and does not drop leaf litter. It is hardy, tolerating salty winds, frost and drought, sun or partial shade, and a range of soil types, even clay. Rarely affected by pests and disease, the tuckeroo is excellent for erosion control. Its usual habitat is littoral rainforest and coastal scrubs. Also known as the beach tamarind, green-leaved tamarind or carrotwood, this tree from the soapberry (Sapindaceae) family has large attractive glossy green leaves, produces small perfumed green-cream flowers between May and September, and festoons of small golden fruit that ripen throughout the second half of the year. The tuckeroo is a common host plant for the common pencilled-blue butterfly, and many other small blue butterflies that need flower buds or fresh shoots. Its small flowers are pollinated by native stingless bees, such as sugarbag bees. The fruit attracts many fruit-eating birds, especially Australasian figbirds, and also some flying fox species. The seeds inside the fruit are sometimes used as a food source by the caterpillars of the bright cornelian butterfly. When planting a tuckeroo, mulch and water it well until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Prune regularly to maintain a dense rounded growth habit and fertilise with slow release native fertiliser during spring.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover The clubhouse now has new furniture, a newly painted exterior and fast bowls has been introduced this month. Fast bowls is a series of short games played on a rotational system with a different scoring system where you are rewarded for your good bowls. Sounds fun? Eighteen bowlers thought so last Sunday when it was run for the first time at the club. It is also great value with about two hours of bowls for $10. Come and try, all welcome. Bowls are supplied, casual attire. Just bring a positive, fun outlook and you will be hooked on what bowls can be. Wet weather created doubt in the minds of some of our Wednesday night bowlers. Still, the hardy souls managed to get in some great games of triples. This week is an early start for those who may be interested in that other sporting spectacle, the State of Origin. Yes, you will be home for kick off. Joe Walters, our main man for Tuesday, is looking for some more recruits. All visitors will be made welcome by Joe and the crew. Maz Idle and Warren Blackbourne defeated Marilyn Podmore and Dick Coppa 29-10. Sally Squires and Rae Farrell defeated Graham Meyers and Marilyn Boulton 23-15. Division three pennant, round 2 vs Bramble Bay. Our ladies continued their winning start with Lee Meyers, Noelle Dean, Joy Reason and Chris Dougan winning 24-19. In the other game Noelene Annakin, Lyn Griffiths, Di Hume and Chris Freshwater won 21-19. Overall 45-38. Thursday, July 4: Winners of the day were Doug Sweedman and Darryl Goschnick with 65 points. Runners up were Bob Bloomer and John Annakin with 63 points. Lucky draw went to Sally and Brian Squires. Remember both players need to be there to win the lucky draw. This Thursday at 10am we are holding a markers course at the club run by our umpires. It would be great to see many club members attend this because most people need some more knowledge when it comes to marking a singles game. Place your names on sheet at the club. If time permits you can do a 20 bowl test, please ask on the day. These will both be happening every Thursday in July if numbers warrant it. Saturday, July 6: Men’s pennant division five home to Bongaree was a tough day of bowls in wet conditions with the away team too strong, winning 2-1 with a score of 64-48. It was a good win by Dean Shaw’s team. Division 10 were away to Kallangur, one rink all with a seven-point loss overall to our guys. Warren Blackbourne’s team had a one point win. Division 11 was home to Solander Lake. It was a great day for the home side winning both rinks with Jim Tatum’s and John Annakin’s teams both getting up. Well done. Next week all teams are at home with a 1pm start. Our visitors are back from New Zealand at 1pm on Wednesday, July 31, which means no morning bowls. Please come and have a friendly game of bowls. Our men’s Champion of Club Champions’ side of Bruce Angus, Tony Verdonck, Mac Townson and Rob Scullion made it through to the semis at Bribie with wins over Kilcoy 18-15 and Brighton 21-21, going down in the semi by 10 shots. Fifteen Range Care players arrived for tea and fun on a very pleasant Tuesday last week. It was great to have the fine weather. Donna and Ken played Colin Harris and George Oliver from Coolum at Coolum in the fourth round of the Lochwood competition on Tuesday as well. Ken started his game badly against George but came back to win 19-15.
