Women’s Cricket Contributed by Mick Schofield The Glasshouse Rangers were host to Cooroy for the opening round of the women’s cricket season. After winning the toss, Glasshouse captain Kim Howden chose to bowl first. The Cooroy women got off to a steady start, not losing a wicket until one of the openers retired hurt. This left the Glasshouse team the opportunity they needed to start to take some vital wickets. Thirteen-year-old Jasmin Baartz was the first to take a wicket, then 14-year-old Anastasia Maher went on to take the first five wicket haul by a
5 for 9 off 5.5 overs. Kim Howden also pitched in with 3 for 14 off 5 overs. All the players bowled very well and were just as good in the field with some fine individual efforts restricting Cooroy to 136. Glasshouse got off to a solid start losing the first wicket at 24. Mel Taller scored 23, Ash Topfer finished on 30 not out and Kim rounded off a fine game with 42. Shilo Hill finished the innings with 11 and unfortunately our team fell just 8 short of the target on 129. However, it was a very promising start to the season.

A grade first place Ian Dickson with 43 points, runner up Doug Johnstone 37 points and third Doug Evans 36 points on a count back from Jeff Kruse 36 points. B grade first place John Tytherleigh 40 points, runner up Dan Black 39 points and third Neil Stenhouse 36 points on a count back from Adrian Ross 36 points. Wednesday, October 14: The ladies played an 18-hole stableford. First place Janice Emmett with 37 points, runner up Susanne Hardy 36 points on a count back from Narelle Thamm 36 points. Saturday, October 17: A mixed stableford was played. A grade first place Doug Evans with 41 points, runner up Craig Monaghan 40 points and third Annie Quarmby 39 points on a count back from Paul Griffin 39 points. B grade first place Andrew Gercken 39 points, runner up Nick Martin 38 points on a count back from Tom Bertwistle 38 points and third Richard Owen with 37 points on a count back from Mark Green 37 points. Contributed by Helen Weil The hard courts at Beerwah Sportsground are getting a serious tidy up as a result of $65,000 in successful applications for both the sportsground and Beerwah State High School in the last round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants. Beerwah Sportsground received $35,000 to upgrade the lighting on the hard courts to competition standard. Beerwah High School received a further $30,000 to complete the resurfacing of the courts. Half were done last year and this latest grant will complete the full job. The hard courts, built on the sportsground, are a shared facility, with the school maintaining and using the courts during school hours and the community having access at other times. The good news is that the hard courts will be looking spick ’n’ span and fully renovated by the end of the year, including new backboards and hoops. The community is urged to make use of these multi-purpose courts out of school hours, weekends and during school holidays. Local groups wanting to start a tennis or basketball club or other activity but need a suitable location should consider the courts as a venue. Local people wanting an occasional casual hire of the courts for a game of tennis, netball or basketball are welcome.
