Generations connect through Christmas greetings

This year the Maleny High School P&C looked at ways to help support students to engage with the local community. P&C president Danielle Watt said the campaign was extremely rewarding not just for the students but for the P&C members as well. “We recently reached out to a local aged care facility to see how our students and school might connect with the residents this Christmas, and the decision was made that Christmas cards would be appreciated,” Danielle said. The 100 Christmas cards required were generously donated by the family of a P&C member and the students went to work writing messages so that each of the elderly residents would receive a card. Danielle said that the number of students who wanted to take part was extraordinary with the cards being completed over several days by many different students. “We were honestly overwhelmed by the number of students who wanted to participate,” she said. “As a parent and a member of the P&C it warms my heart to see our students helping to bridge the gap between themselves and the elderly local residents, and we are looking forward to continuing to do this year after year. “We would like to thank our school principal Deborah Stewart who is such a positive and dedicated leader and has been so supportive of all of the students’ projects within the community,” Danielle said.

Cancellation of Christmas festival

With dramatic weather predictions last week of thunderstorms, heavy rain and wind, Maleny Commerce was forced to cancel this year’s Maleny Christmas Festival and Street party planned for Friday, December 14. Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton thanked the small band of volunteers - Mark Burgunder, Colin and Lindel Keilly, Rev Scott Kroeger, Jenni Matthews and Maleny Commerce’s secretary Karen Shaw - who had worked tirelessly over the past few months to create what is always a fun family community event. “We know how disappointing cancelling the event is for our town and how disappointing it is for Karen and her team. However, as always our priority is ensuring the safety of the community,” Nicole said.

Christmas Tree Festival to delight

How many ways can you interpret the theme ‘Christmas growing up’? Visitors to the annual Christmas Tree Festival at Maleny Uniting Church are about to find out. The church building will be filled with more than 40 trees and displays all depicting this year’s theme of Christmas growing up. Festival coordinator Murray Robertson said the festival was not a competition and through the many displays you can expect multiple interpretations of the theme. “Some trees will reflect the Christmas we know from when we were growing up, and I am sure size will be a big factor,” Murray said. “Others may provoke thoughts about how our attitude to Christmas changes as we grow older,” he said. Children will be well catered for at the festival. While the trees will captivate them, there will also be plenty of hands-on activities including the Kids Play Zone, which includes a choice of activities, craft, quizzes and Christmas books. Each year the festival sponsors a local charity and this year it is Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. The centre provides much needed assistance to people who need a helping hand, which can often be the case at Christmas. Entry to the Christmas Tree Festival is free, but visitors are invited to make a gold coin contribution to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. So put ‘Christmas growing up’ on your Christmas to do list. Spare a thought for our furry friends this Christmas By Clive Phillips, professor of animal welfare, and Sarah Zito, research coordinator, at the Centre for Animal Welfare and Ethics, the University of Queensland. Christmas is typically a time for celebrating and spending time with loved ones. But while we party, give lavish presents and visit our families, we can sometimes overlook how some very important family members — our pets — might be affected. We should give special consideration at this time of year to the animals we love as their lives can be unknowingly thrown into turmoil for several days, or even weeks.

Changing routines

The Christmas holiday period is often a time when our routines change - late nights, leaving the house to visit relatives and going on holiday. Pets don’t understand our complicated lives and rely on a simple routine for happiness. This can be a recipe for trouble. Parties involve noise, lots of people descending on their territory and unusual human behaviour, such as excessive shouting and fireworks. In much of northern Australia, Christmas time coincides with storm season, exacerbating the risks to pets. It’s important to make sure your pets are identified in case they escape. Better still, have a quiet area for them to retreat to. Tips on helping your pets get through the fireworks and a thunderstorm season are available from the RSPCA. If you plan to go away, having a pet minder come to the house is usually the best option, as leaving pets alone for long periods will cause added stress. Toys which trickle feed the animal or frozen water in milk cartons can keep them occupied when the owners are away for short stints. Sending a pet to a kennel or cattery for an extended stay should only be considered if a suitable minder cannot be found, as the change in environment can be similarly stressful for the animal. If you do choose this option, the facility should be carefully inspected to make sure it is set up with the best interests of the animal in mind. You can prepare your pet for their temporary

new home by making sure vaccinations are up to date and taking them for short stays before Christmas. They should arrive with any medications and specific food. And it is best for all involved not to prolong the parting, however guilty you may feel leaving them.

Household hazards

The silly season also brings with it many increased risks to pets around the house that we may be completely unaware of. For example, while many foods we eat at Christmas may seem like a delicious special treat, they can actually be quite dangerous for animals. Poisoning is most common from chocolate, lollies, Christmas

are potentially harmful, including holly, mistletoe, amaryllis, poinsettia and lilies (which are deadly to cats). If your pet has consumed any of these things, symptoms to watch out for are vomiting, diarrhoea and decreased appetite and weight loss. Other things to be mindful of are loose cords, light strands and electrical wires, which can look like tempting toys, especially for adventurous puppies and kittens looking for things to chew.

Giving animals as gifts

pudding/cake, grapes, sultanas, raisins, coffee grounds, alcohol, salt, onions, avocado, garlic, macadamia nuts, anything containing the sweetener xylitol (eg, gum, candy or breath fresheners), cooked bones and anything with chilli in it. Many people like to give their pets a present at Christmas, but it should be suitable and the pet should not be allowed to eat the wrapping paper or string. As many of us know, our animal friends also seem to be curiously drawn to Christmas tree decorations such as tinsel, ribbons, balls, lights, edible chocolates and candy canes, which can be dangerous if consumed. Snow globes, too, can be deadly as they may contain anti-freeze. Be careful when adding preservatives, such as aspirin, to a Christmas tree’s water, as pets may drink it (better still, don’t use aspirin as it doesn’t work on trees). In fact, many plants and flowers commonly used as decorations or gifts at Christmas 18

Giving animals as gifts is understandable and can bring a lot of joy to the family over the festive season and beyond. But while research has shown that animals presented as gifts are no more likely to be abandoned than other animals, it’s still important to think carefully about the needs of everyone involved, including the intended pet. Animal shelters, for instance, caution about giving pets at Christmas time as it does not give the recipient time to consider the implications of taking on a new family member. For instance, exotic pets, such as snakes and lizards, require special consideration and should need the person’s consent. One way to overcome the risk of rejection or neglect is to give a voucher for pet purchase, redeemable at shelters, or giving a toy animal with a message that it will be replaced by a live animal at a suitable time. It’s also important to get the animal from a good source, taking care to avoid animals from puppy or kitten farms, where conditions for the animals are generally poor. Buying from an animal shelter is best, where there is usually a large range of breeds and ages to choose from, together with health guarantees for the animals purchased and careful behaviour checks. Our pets should enjoy Christmas too There are ways to make sure pets enjoy Christmas rather than it being a stressful time each year. Suitable treats can be provided with their regular food. Because people have more free time, we can spend some extra quality time with our pets by cuddling on the sofa, brushing them, playing games or going for extra walks. Let’s not be selfish this Christmas, remembering not only the people in the world that are less fortunate than ourselves, but also the many cats, dogs and other animals that need a home and rely on us to ensure the festive season is a happy and healthy one. In the lead up to Christmas why not take the opportunity to wander through the trail of magical solar-powered lights on display at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) campus from Wednesday, December 19 to Sunday, December 23. A free community celebration of environmental sustainability, Solar Nights is described as an ethereal, interactive light trail that will captivate, inspire and entertain people of all ages. Solar Nights is open between 6.30-9pm to explore the light trail at your leisure. Because USC is a wildlife reserve, attendees are requested to stick to the light trail provided. Dogs are not permitted on campus. The university is located at 90 Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs.

We’re not alone

Recently, we attended Gregson & Weight’s Christmas memorial service at their Caloundra Road chapel. The service united folk who had said their final goodbyes to family or friends throughout the year. The chapel was brimful with tissue boxes neatly laid on the seats and a tall bare Christmas tree occupying centre stage where the coffin would normally be placed. After the warm welcome and introduction, the popular and stirring ‘Amazing Grace’ was sung. Staff expressed meaningful words followed by a Christmas message from the former chaplain of the Maleny State High School. An RSL tribute was also presented. The highlight was the tree of remembrance where family members of all ages were invited to adorn the tree with bright baubles and a written message in memory of the special folk they wouldn’t be celebrating Christmas with this year. A golden star was placed atop the proud tree and with the flick of a switch flashing lights danced along the branches. On the overhead screens a photographic tribute brought our much loved ones to life in an overwhelming feeling of their actual presence there with us. Words of comfort gave us the “warm fuzzies” - a time of parting is shared by us all, but so too does being reunited finally. ‘Life on a train’ in its original form was shown while accompanying, meaningful phrases brought many of us to tears. These experiences help us grow together and understand death. We left feeling we had shared something common with all folk who attended the service. Refreshments, smiling and having conversations with people we‘d only just come to know - all sharing a feeling of deep loss at Christmas time. It was overwhelming. We’re not alone; none of us! But words are important as they express the profound advent of the Christ child in space, time and history. Examine the content and the truth spoken in these carols.
