2025 was not an easy year for our community.
Artists and institutions felt the weight of rising material and shipping costs, increasing barriers to travel, and the loss of long-standing businesses and educational spaces. The broader political climate added new layers of difficulty to how—and whether— we could gather, move, and share our work. These challenges were real, and they were felt deeply.
And yet, 2025 was also a year of clarity for GAS.
The challenges faced by our glass family brought our mission into sharper focus. The question that guided us throughout the year was not simply “How do we sustain what we have?” but rather “How do we increase our impact in a way that truly serves our community—especially those who need it most?”
This question shaped nearly every decision we made.
Rather than retreating in the face of difficulty, we spent 2025 building toward a broader, more inclusive vision of who GAS is and how we show up for our community. We examined the changing needs of our members. We sought new ways to serve our members where they live and work. We invested time, resources, and imagination into expanding our reach— sometimes in ways that won’t fully take effect until this year.
One of the most visible reflections of this commitment was our focus on students and emerging artists. The expansion of the MacPherson-Wortley Emerging Artist Award and the GAS Students initiative to provide free student memberships are rooted in the belief that the future and legacy of our community depends on access and sustained support—not just encouragement from the sidelines.
Becoming the organization our community needs, we had to take action.
We didn’t just rethink how we serve, we also rethought how and where we gather. GAS Travels and our keystone events—including our work in Texas—are not about destination for destination’s sake. They are
about supporting artists where they live and work, about recognizing that vibrant glass communities exist far beyond traditional centers, and about directing our energy toward places where connection and support can have the most impact. This shift reflects a larger truth we’ve embraced: serving our community means going to them, wherever (and everywhere) they are.
At its heart, 2025 was a year of choosing support over comfort. It was a year of asking hard questions, intentionally broadening our focus, and committing to growth that is not just bigger, but deeper. The steps
we are taking are not always the easiest ones, but they are guided by an unwavering belief in the importance of art, the power of glass to connect people, and our responsibility to lead within our community.
As we move forward, we do so with ambition and a firm foundation. The work we began in 2025 positions GAS to serve more artists, foster stronger networks, and respond more nimbly to a changing world. We are moving toward a future that is more accessible, more expansive, and more reflective of the diverse community we represent. It is guided by our vision and anchored in our values.

The Glass Art Society has remained dedicated to its members throughout the economic volatility of recent years. To ensure our community remained supported during the pandemic and subsequent downturn, we made the strategic decision to draw on our financial reserves to keep membership costs accessible and to maintain essential services. During this period, our equity fell from $592,756 in 2019 to a low of -$62,048 in 2024 as we absorbed the financial impact of the crisis to protect our members. By diligently managing expenses and working towards diversifying our income, including a significant reduction in annual spending during the height of the pandemic, we have successfully navigated these challenges while supporting our community.
We are now entering a pivotal phase of stabilization. Our projections for 2025 indicate that the organization is officially “turning the corner.” For the first time since the pandemic, we are anticipating:
• A return to a positive operating profit.
• A positive total contribution of $16,048.
• Stabilized revenue of $671,577, ensuring we are no longer drawing down on our remaining assets to fund operations.
Looking further into the future, our financial outlook becomes even more encouraging. By the end of FY2026, we foresee a robust recovery characterized by:
• Significant Revenue Growth: Total revenue is expected to climb to $994,814, approaching our pre-pandemic highs.
• Strong Operating Profits: We anticipate an operating profit of $116,742, which will allow us to begin rebuilding our reserves.
• Restored Equity: Our total equity is projected to return to a positive balance of $70,924, marking the successful outcome of our financial recovery plan, allowing us to focus on the future.
A vital component of this recovery is the expansion of our programming and global reach. We are thrilled to announce that GAS is taking over the International Festival of Glass (IFoG) this year. This prestigious addition, combined with our promising conference locations and exciting new travel destinations for the coming years, will provide world-class value to our members. These initiatives are not only designed to support the glass community through inspiration and connection but also to provide diversified revenue necessary to ensure the Glass Art Society remains a financially stable and permanent home for artists worldwide.

In 2025, we deepened our commitment to the global glass community by celebrating glass artists wherever they live and work, and by intentionally expanding the rich resources we provide as a leader in the glass community.
The year began with our GAS Travels adventure in Australia. This 12-day excursion brought 15 GAS Members together to meet artists, learn about local glassmaking, and explore the culture of Sydney, Mittagong, Canberra, Melbourne, and Adelaide. GAS Travels functions as a key component of our programming, offering artists and glass enthusiasts a unique opportunity to connect one-on-one.
Reflecting on her GAS Travels journey, traveler Anne Stonehouse said, “The warmth and hospitality of glass artists shone. They welcomed us into their studios and, at times, into their homes. On both Saturday evenings of the tour, artist couples Matt Curtis and Harry Schwarzrock in Canberra and Nick and Pauline Mount in Adelaide hosted lively parties to which we were guests, along with members of the local glass art community, most of whom we had visited. This afforded an additional opportunity to interact with glass artist rock stars.”
Shortly after our GAS Travels trip to Australia, we announced an expansion to our emerging artist award. Originally funded by George and Dorothy Saxe, our emerging artist award provides emerging talent in our community with vital resources to kickstart their careers. Now funded by Nancy and Roger MacPherson and Barbara and Richard
Wortley, this expanded award provides three emerging artists with a cash prize, a special lecture slot at the annual GAS Conference, a digital exhibition catalog, and a residency at the Chrysler Museum of Art Perry Glass Studio. The 2025 MacPherson-Wortley Emerging Artist Award was presented to Karisa Gregorio (USA), Liz Markum (USA), and Jiemin Park(South Korea).
May brought GAS and 700 conference attendees to Texas as we trailblazed new traditions together. We were proud to support our GAS community members in the Arlington-Fort Worth area who are working tirelessly to create vibrant, inclusive spaces. Their efforts remind us of the power of art to inspire, connect, and foster understanding. In Texas, we experienced four days of powerful programming that spanned from lectures that explored glass from the periphery to demonstrations utilizing the University of Texas at Arlington’s iron foundry and glass studios. From the Black femme collective (Spider Martins, Lyncia Berry, Ashley Harris, and Adeye Jean-Baptiste) combining bronze pours and hot glass for our Conference Kick Off demonstration to Einar and Jamex de la Torre showcasing their unique approach to glass at SiNaCa Studios for our Firestarter! fundraiser, the Texas 2025 conference was truly a tour de force representing the best of what our community can be.
While in Texas, we launched our GAS Students initiative, which had the ambitious goal of making student memberships free beginning in 2026. Over the course of the year, we raised more than $20,000 with the help of 49 donors to make our most transformative member goal a reality. Offering free student memberships means we can expand access, empower emerging artists, and invest directly in the future of our field.
Our second GAS Travels trip brought us to Italy to enjoy fine cuisine, wine, and marvel in the glassmaking traditions that make places like Murano so special to the glass community. GAS Travels offers more than just glass visits—it fosters community, inspiration, and global connection. In addition to getting previews of Corning 2026
presentations from Lucio Bubacco, Alessandro Boscolo, and Davide Salvadore, we marveled at the gorgeous bridges in Venice, journeyed into the Prosecco Hills, and more. A few extra cases of prosecco were even procured—ready to be uncorked when many of our tour group members reunite in Corning, NY, for the 2026 GAS Annual Conference!
2025 was one of the most transformative years in GAS’s history, made possible by you—our members and donors.
