WHY COLLABORATION IS SHAPING THE FUTURE OF THE GLASS AND GLAZING INDUSTRY THE RIGHT PEOPLE READ GLASS NEWS THE UK’S LEADING TRADE NEWSPAPER FOR WINDOWS, DOORS AND CONSERVATORIES
Collaboration has always been at the heart of the Glass and Glazing Federation's approach. By bringing together members, government departments, regulators and technical experts, the Federation helps ensure the industry's voice is heard, and businesses have the opportunity to contribute to the conversations shaping the future of the sector. Over the past year, this collaborative approach has become increasingly important. The GGF has continued to engage with government consultations on topics including the Future Homes Standard, Approved Document B, construction product reform and wider building safety initiatives. These discussions help ensure the practical experience of manufacturers, installers and suppliers is reflected as new guidance and legislation are developed. Working closely with organisations such as the Office for Product Safety
Collaboration also plays an important role within the GGF's technical groups, where members discuss industry challenges, share best practice and contribute to the development of future guidance. These groups encourage open discussion, bringing together businesses from across the supply chain to exchange experience and support practical solutions. Regional meetings provide another opportunity for members to connect with the wider industry. Events across England, Scotland and Wales allow businesses to hear the latest updates, discuss shared challenges and strengthen professional relationships. These conversations help members stay informed while encouraging greater collaboration across the sector. Lauren Mawford, Director of the Glass and Glazing
Federation, said: "The challenges facing our industry are best addressed when businesses, regulators and stakeholders work together. By sharing knowledge, contributing expertise and engaging in meaningful discussion, we can help shape positive change and support a stronger future for the glass and glazing industry." For individual businesses, collaboration creates opportunities to learn from others, stay up to date with regulatory developments, access expert technical guidance and contribute to discussions that influence future standards and best practice. As the industry continues to respond to changing legislation, new technologies and evolving customer expectations, collaboration will remain an important part of driving progress. By bringing people together, encouraging knowledge sharing and representing members' views, the GGF is helping to strengthen the glass and glazing industry for the future. The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
A HOT SUMMER IS DRAWING TO AN END We’re at that time of year again when school leavers wait on examination results and consider the future, and what they may like to pursue as a career. We all know that going to university is expensive and no guarantee of gaining a position on graduation, so I was interested to see yet more comment on whether university or apprenticeships is the way to go. Perhaps the situation at Cambridge may influence the value of universities in people’s minds, and particularly in the case of those universities that have always been deemed to be at the top of the tree. A recent survey showed that 95% of parents said they were interested in knowing more about apprenticeships that allow young people to “earn while they learn”, and 91% of young people said the same. Quoting from a release from Enginuity: “Strikingly, 90% of young people said they would consider apprenticeships over a conventional university degree, while 71% of parents said they would encourage their child to consider an apprenticeship over a degree, up from 67% in 2025. The story is not that families are turning away from university but there is a growing appreciation of apprenticeships as a credible choice that combines affordability, practical experience and progression into skilled careers. The challenge of apprenticeship legitimacy is diminishing, with both young people and parents increasingly open to and interested in these pathways. The focus must now shift to strengthening high-quality careers guidance and ensuring routes into apprenticeships are clear, accessible and easy to navigate. Affordability and paid learning are the clearest drivers of interest: “Earn while you learn” emerged as the top reason selected by both parents and young people for supporting or considering vocational routes. Avoiding university cost and debt also rose year on year for both groups. Qualitative responses reinforce the same pattern: families value university where it is needed but increasingly question whether a degree is the only or best route into every career.” Call me ignorant…..steady! But in looking at this whole issue of unis versus apprenticeships I came across something called ‘T levels’. Now I know I’m pretty out of touch with modern education and examination formats…I’m more familiar with 11+ exams, Common Entrance and GCEs from the 1960s, so I looked into T Levels presuming they were a technical qualification probably associated with apprenticeships but was surprised to find that 5 GCSE passes are required including Maths and English just to be eligible of T Levels. On the two year course there is a mandatory 45 day industry placement and, on completion, T levels can be worth 3 ‘A’ levels and may provide entry to a university course. One bit that seems to be useful is that courses are slanted towards various business knowledge including marketing, accounting, engineering, digital,
www.glassnews.co.uk | September 2026
construction and business administration, amongst other themes. So, the question in my mind is whether T Levels will help towards gaining apprenticeships? The actual industry placement seems to be for a very short time over a two-year period. Certainly, slanting the courses towards specific industries rather than pure academia makes sense but I still wonder whether someone approaching a company for an apprenticeship with T Levels in the bag, would sway a company towards taking them on rather than someone who demonstrates practical skills and enthusiasm? Having just enjoyed a glorious summer, although it looks as if that may be over as I look at a grey sky, with rain in the air, and leaves starting to be shed, thoughts move towards whether this will be become the norm for the British summer or whether this a bit of a one-off just like 1976. However, a hot summer can also prove problematic as can be seen from the wildfires and the inevitable shortage of water. There is always the argument as to whether privatising the water companies so that investors can make a fat profit rather than invest in infrastructure and maintenance of the water network, could be viewed as desirable and I suspect we all have our own views on that! As if by magic, our regular contributor, Danny Williams in his Cold Calling column raises a point that I for one hadn’t thought of. In our industry we pretty much concentrate our efforts on providing heat retention schemes of all kinds with double and triple glazing, coated glass, draught proof doors and windows and general insulation – in fact anything to save heat, and therefore energy. Suddenly we are awake to the possibility that, in the future, keeping homes cool may be just as important. It may be the case of protecting homes from cold winters and hot summers much like the climate in Eastern Europe. Danny says: “Stop selling windows. Start selling comfortable homes instead.” He talks about the g-value, or solar factor, which measures how much solar energy passes through the glass and ends up inside the building. The lower the g-value, broadly speaking, the less of the sun’s heat gets through. Approved Document O, introduced to tackle overheating in new residential buildings in England, specifically addresses solar gain and glazing g-values. But when was the last time a homeowner asked about the g-value of the windows you were selling to them? As ever, Danny gives us a good read and something to think about.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
‘FOREVER HOME’ RENOVATIONS DRIVE DEMAND FOR PREMIUM ALUMINIUM Economic uncertainty has changed the way many homeowners now approach major spending decisions. Rather than upsizing or relocating, increasing numbers are choosing to improve the homes they already have, investing in spaces designed to meet their long-term needs and lifestyles. While the ‘move or improve’ debate is nothing new, the concept of the ‘forever home’ is becoming increasingly influential with homeowners placing greater emphasis on quality, durability and timeless design choices that will continue to add value and enjoyment for years to come. For the fenestration sector, this shift is creating a growing demand for premium products and materials, particularly aluminium systems, as consumers look beyond short-term costs and focus more heavily on long-term performance and aesthetics. As Scott Foster, group marketing director at Endurance® Aluminium explains, homeowners are becoming far more considered in their purchasing decisions as they pursue the perfect ‘forever home’. “People are thinking much more carefully about where they invest their money,” says Scott. “For many homeowners, moving house is either financially unattractive or simply not the right solution anymore, so instead they’re investing in improving the property they already love. “When customers take that long-term approach, priorities naturally begin to shift. Rather than looking purely at the upfront costs, they start focusing on quality, durability, appearance and how products will perform over many years. These days, creating a space that is ‘Instagrammable’ is increasingly becoming part of the checklist too.” This changing mindset is particularly evident in the growing popularity of aluminium glazing systems. Once viewed primarily as a commercial product, aluminium has become increasingly desirable to homeowners thanks to its slim sightlines, contemporary appearance and long-term resilience. Modern homeowners are also increasingly design conscious with glazing playing a major role in the overall look and feel of a property. Large expanses of glass, minimal frames and clean architectural lines continue to grow in popularity across renovation and extension projects, particularly as homeowners seek to create brighter, light living spaces.
“Homeowners want products that look exceptional but also stand the test of time, and aluminium gives them that combination.” 4
STRATEGIC INVESTMENT MAKES FUTURE PRODUCTS’ OPERATIONS VIRTUALLY SOLAR POWERED
“Where once windows and doors were seen as functional, they are now a key part of the overall aesthetic vision for many homeowners. Aluminium is increasingly viewed as a premium solution because it delivers on both performance and aesthetics, offering strength, durability and low maintenance alongside the sleek, modern appearance many customers are looking for,” Scott continues. “Homeowners want products that look exceptional but also stand the test of time, and aluminium gives them that combination.” Energy efficiency also remains a major driver behind renovation activity, particularly as homeowners continue to face rising energy costs and increasing awareness around sustainability. Premium glazing systems can play a significant role in improving energy efficiency and comfort, making them an increasingly important part of renovation plans. Importantly, the shift towards premium home improvement products is also creating new opportunities for installers. As consumers become more willing to invest in quality, conversations are moving away from purely price-led selling and towards long-term value. Installers who can confidently demonstrate the benefits of premium systems, including durability, aesthetics, efficiency and lifecycle performance, are often better positioned to secure higher value projects. “The most successful installers are increasingly those who can sell on value rather than simply competing on price,” says Scott. “Homeowners undertaking major renovations are typically making emotional as well as financial investments into their homes, so they want reassurance they’re choosing products that genuinely deliver. “That creates significant opportunities for installers who understand premium products and can clearly communicate the long-term benefits to customers.” The trend also reflects wider changes within the home improvement market, where consumer expectations continue to evolve. Homeowners now carry out extensive online research before making purchasing decisions and are increasingly influenced by quality, reputation and overall customer experience rather than headline pricing alone.
Leading composite door manufacturer and PVCu window and door fabricator, Future Products, has installed more than one thousand panels on the roof of its Nottinghamshirebased operations, as part of efforts to improve operational efficiencies and support its long-term growth strategy. The Liniar fabricator invested £500,000 into the installation of 1200 solar panels on its 77,000 sq. ft Mansfield facility. The impressive array of panels is set to generate 100,000 kWh of renewable energy each month – enough to power 95% of Future Products’ operational energy requirements – and reduce the company’s energy costs by a whopping 85%. With recent statistics from Make UK revealing that 90% of manufacturers have seen their energy bills increase since 2022, and over half citing energy costs as their biggest business challenge, becoming energy self-sufficient is a significant step for the fabricator in futureproofing its operations. This investment forms part of Future Products’ ongoing programme of operational improvement, helping to increase efficiency, reduce overheads and
"With Clean Power 2030 and Net Zero on the horizon, it is also a practical investment that supports our sustainability objectives as well as our ambitions for future growth.” ensure the business remains as competitive as possible in an evolving market. Andrew Francis, Finance Director, Future Products, explains the reason behind the move: “Energy prices have been high for some time, and with the landscape still volatile, being able to access all of our electricity requirements from our own solar generation is a key investment and one that underlines our commitment to the future of our business, and, in turn, supports our customers.” The project, delivered in June by Kennedy Renewables, marks a major milestone for Future Products as they also take steps to operate more sustainably. Andrew concludes: “The solar investment will help us to reduce our energy costs and reliance on external suppliers, and creates greater capacity to invest in our people, products and facilities. With Clean Power 2030 and Net Zero on the horizon, it is also a practical investment that supports our sustainability objectives as well as our ambitions for future growth.” To find out more about Future Products, visit www.futureproductsltd.com.
For manufacturers and installers alike, this means premium positioning, product quality and service standards are becoming increasingly important competitive differentiators. While economic uncertainty may have slowed some areas of discretionary spending, the ‘forever home’ trend demonstrates that homeowners are still prepared to invest when they see genuine long-term value. For the glazing industry, and particularly for premium aluminium systems, that shift is helping to reshape both consumer expectations and future market opportunities. MORE THAN JUST FITTING A WINDOW! Jemma Brooks, Head Of Product Management at MACO Door and Window Hardware tells Glass News about the Women in Fenestration Training Day at Building our Skills.
Recently, I had the pleasure of spending a day with a small group of women from across the fenestration industry at a handson training session organised by Sarah Ball and the Women in Fenestration Network, hosted by the fantastic Mark Handley from Building Our Skills. From the start, there was a real sense of purpose. Everyone arrived ready to learn, share experiences and support one another, creating an environment where confidence
and knowledge grew naturally throughout the day. After introductions and a chat over a cup of tea, Mark took us through the fundamentals, ensuring everyone started with the same foundation of knowledge. His relaxed, friendly approach immediately put everyone at ease, creating the perfect environment for learning and encouraging questions from people of all experience levels.
We then moved into the practical training area, where the real learning began. Working in small groups, we were guided through the complete process of removing and replacing a window, from safely deglazing and removing the existing frame through to measuring accurately and preparing for the new installation. Along the way, Mark shared invaluable tips and insights gained from years of hands-on experience. What stood out most was watching confidence build with every task completed. Everyone had the opportunity to take part in the removal and refitting process, supported by both Mark and the wider group. There was no judgement, no pressure and no expectation that anyone should know all the answers. Instead, there was collaboration, encouragement and a genuine enthusiasm for learning. As someone in a leadership role, I often speak about the importance of continuous development. While technical skills are essential, days like this highlight the benefits that can't be measured so easily: • Confidence. • Connection. • Belonging. By the end of the day, people were asking questions more freely, sharing experiences openly and stepping outside their comfort zones with confidence. New connections had been formed, barriers removed and a stronger sense of belonging created. For me, these Women in Fenestration Network events are about far more than developing practical skills. They create opportunities to connect, support and inspire one another while building confidence in an environment where everyone feels welcome and valued. Fenestration has always been a peopledriven industry. The products and innovations are important, but it is the people behind them who drive progress. By investing in learning, collaboration and confidence, we are investing in the future of our industry. We arrived to learn how to fit a window. We left with new skills, new connections and a renewed confidence in what we can achieve. And for me, that's what great training is all about. https://www.maco.eu/en-GB/Home

A list of matching Hörmann Truedor distributors is then generated, with users able to contact one or more distributors directly by phone or email. The introduction of the Installer Finder coincides with the launch of the new Hörmann Truedor end consumer social media campaign, titled Hörmann Street. Inspired by some of the UK’s most iconic and best-loved soap operas, the campaign features five episodes set against the backdrop of a fictional street, capturing the daily lives, relationships and emotional conflicts of a recurring cast of characters. Featuring moments of romance, family drama, betrayal and suspenseful cliffhangers, each episode cleverly incorporates the key features and benefits of Hörmann’s Truedor composite door
range, helping to engage homeowners in a fresh and entertaining way. The campaign has been created not only to entertain but also to create a strong pipeline of enquiries for Hörmann Truedor composite door installers. Commenting on the launch, David O’Mara, Marketing Manager for Hörmann Truedor said: “The Installer Finder is a key addition to our growing marketing support package for installers and distributors. Not only does it help simplify the buying process for homeowners, but it also provides our distribution partners with access to free, high-quality sales leads. It is another example of the importance Hörmann places on supporting its growing network of installers and distributors and investing in the continued growth of the Hörmann Truedor brand.” To find out more view Installer Finder: https://hormanntruedor.co.uk/installer-finder/
INSIGHT DATA RAISES ITS PROFILE AT INSTALLERSHOW Insight Data used this year's InstallerSHOW to strengthen its presence across the building products sector, meeting existing customers, making new connections and showcasing the latest developments in its Salestracker platform. Exhibiting alongside many of the UK's leading names from the building products and home improvement sectors, the company spent three days demonstrating how its data and software help businesses identify new opportunities and win more work. Visitors to the stand were given demonstrations of Salestracker, Insight Data's sales and marketing growth platform, along with an exclusive preview of the forthcoming Salestracker 4.0 release. Andrew Scott, CEO of Insight Data, said: "InstallerSHOW was an opportunity to have some excellent conversations with businesses looking at smarter ways to generate sales and improve their marketing. There was genuine interest in Salestracker and it was encouraging to show people what's coming next with version 4.0. "Understanding what software can do is one thing. Seeing how it can work for your business is something else entirely, which is why live demonstrations are so important."
14
Businesses that were unable to visit the Insight Data stand at InstallerSHOW can still arrange a personalised demonstration of Salestracker, including a preview of Salestracker 4.0, by visiting www.insightdata.co.uk. The company will also showcase the platform in greater detail at the EDGE business growth event on September 17, 2026 (insightedge.co.uk/) where attendees will take part in practical breakout sessions led by the company's expert team.
BBC SHINES SPOTLIGHT ON SCHLEGEL-BACKED PROGRAMME INSPIRING FUTURE ENGINEERS Schlegel, a Quanex company and leading manufacturer of high-performance sealing systems for windows and doors, has been featured on BBC’s Look North for its continued support for UTC South Durham’s Industry Projects programme. The initiative, run by the technical college and sixth form in Newton Aycliffe, gives STEM students the opportunity to work on real challenges set by regional employers while helping them develop the practical and transferable skills employers need. This year, Schlegel provided a live project brief for a team of students based on a real manufacturing issue from within its operations. The team spent 12 weeks researching the issue, developing a proposed solution and presenting their findings at the programme’s finale event. For students Mathew Causer and Liam Pattison the programme has given them a focus for their future careers.
Mathew said: “This has been really beneficial as I’ve learned that I enjoy the hands-on work experience and now understand this is what I want to do in my engineering apprenticeship,” while Liam said: “I have enjoyed this introduction to engineering at Quanex and doing design and prototyping work, and this is where I would like to focus my career.” Continuous Improvement Manager Mark Sigsworth represented Schlegel throughout the programme and said: “This has been a great exercise for us as a company, some of the skills that the students have gained coming from a S.T.E.M school has been passed onto some of our engineers. “The students first few weeks in the world of manufacturing and engineering has given them an insight into working life, how to conduct themselves in meetings and an understanding of our expectations.
“The next few months will be particularly good for the students as they have now been given real life improvement projects with timelines, gateway reviews and a full end of project presentation to the senior staff and the collage.” For Schlegel, the benefits of the programme are already proven. Previous students developed a solution aimed at reducing downtime at the company’s Newton Aycliffe manufacturing facility. The proposal was subsequently implemented and is now being explored for patent protection and wider rollout. “The quality of ideas that come from these projects is always impressive and we have already seen a student-led solution deliver tangible benefits within our own operation, which demonstrates the value of bringing education and industry closer together,” added Mark. “As a manufacturer with deep roots in the North East, we want to find and support the next generation of engineers. Programmes like this help build a strong local skills pipeline around the local area while giving students meaningful experience that can shape their future careers.” For more information, visit www.schlegel.com.

ASWS APPOINTED TO RESTORE ICONIC GLAZING THE RESIDENCE COLLECTION BECOMES A FOUNDING AT THE GRADE I LISTED DE LA WARR PAVILION MEMBER OF THE WOMEN IN FENESTRATION NETWORK Work has begun on a major conservation project at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill‑on‑Sea, one of the UK’s most important modernist buildings, as the Grade I‑listed arts centre marks its 90th anniversary. Designed by Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff and completed in 1935, the Pavilion is internationally recognised for its pioneering architecture and cultural significance. Specialist heritage contractor, Associated Steel Window Services (ASWS) has been appointed to undertake a comprehensive refurbishment of the building’s iconic staircase glazing, a defining architectural feature of the Pavilion. The 28‑week programme will see ASWS carry out a full off‑site refurbishment of the north and south bowed‑plan staircase steel frame windows, alongside the installation of new steel

ring beams, curved metal beading and new glazing. In addition to its specialist steel window expertise, ASWS is acting as Principal Contractor for the works, responsible for site welfare, scaffolding, boundaries and overall site provisions. The phased approach has been carefully planned to ensure that all areas of the venue remain open throughout 2026, allowing the Pavilion to continue hosting performances and events during the restoration. The works form part of a wider conservation masterplan aimed at addressing long‑standing maintenance issues, improving accessibility and circulation, and securing the building’s long‑term resilience. The initial phase focuses on the roof and staircase glazing, elements that have suffered from
water ingress, corrosion and environmental degradation over time. Stewart Drew, Chief Executive and Director of the De La Warr Pavilion, said the project is part of a long‑term vision “to reimagine this special place for the next century,” following the award of a £7.6m grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund last year. Building on earlier restoration work in the early 2000s, the current programme represents a significant step forward in safeguarding the Pavilion’s fabric. ASWS’s appointment reflects its specialist experience in delivering complex heritage steel window restorations on nationally significant buildings. The newly formed organisation held its inaugural Professional Development Day last month, with women from across the country in attendance representing every part of the fenestration supply chain. Several inspirational keynote speakers took to the stage, including former England Rugby Captain, Catherine Spencer. Another highlight saw the launch of a mentoring programme, led by Clare Bailey, an experienced commercial leader with over 25 years in senior roles across manufacturing and construction. Designed for women at all career stages, this programme helps mentees gain confidence, clarity, and industry insight from experienced professionals. In turn, mentors have the opportunity to share their expertise, offer guidance, and actively shape the next generation of sector leaders.
Following the success of the event, several further initiatives have been organised, the most recent of which took place in July, where the WFN hosted a training day focused on window installation, attended by The Residence Collection Brand Ambassador, Alyssa Jones. The organisation also launched the WFN Podcast on 27th July, with Jo Trotman and Sarah Hitchings of The Residence Collection joining the inaugural episode due to air shortly. Late this year brings the beginning of WFN’s lunch and learn programme which will be held at the GGF Headquarters on 15th September in London. Part of WFN's Lunch and Learn regional training programme, invites women from across the sector to take part in bite size training sessions, with the first one focussing on Confidence and Imposter Syndrome. A final in-person event of 2026 will then take place in Birmingham, where industry professionals will meet for networking, then hit the Christmas Markets together. Jо Trotman, Sales and Marketing Managerat
The Residence Collection, commented: “We are absolutely delighted to become a founding member of the WFN after a brilliant first event. It was great to see so many attend from all corners of the industry come together. "Having a strong network of industry professionals, with regular events, a dedicated mentoring programme to help women navigate their career progression, hands-on training days, and opportunities to build skills, bridging the industry's skills gap, and inspire future leaders gives women in the industry a real sense of community. We hope these initiatives will encourage more women to start and progress their careers in fenestration." KEYSTONE’S LATEST CONSUMER FENESTRATION REPORT HIGHLIGHTS TIMBER, SMART TECHNOLOGY AND REGIONAL OPPORTUNITIES The latest UK Consumer Fenestration Trends Report has been released, providing fresh insight into homeowner preferences, priorities and purchasing behaviour across the UK windows, doors and roof glazing market. This edition places particular emphasis on a number of areas where a deeper understanding of consumers can create new opportunities for manufacturers and installers. Following the strong reception to the previous report’s analysis of aluminium-preferring consumers, this edition includes a detailed look at timber-preferring homeowners, revealing a distinct group that places more importance on quality, security, style and craftsmanship, along with higher project budgets across many areas of home improvement. The report also revisits smart home technology, exploring updated attitudes towards the functionalities consumers value, barriers to wider adoption and potential market size. Security remains the strongest
area of interest, while cost, reliability and complexity continue to limit take-up. A further feature is the regional preference analysis, highlighting significant local differences across materials, window and door styles, colours, glazing and purchasing priorities. The findings provide installers with practical insight into what matters most to homeowners in their local markets, helping them tailor product recommendations and marketing messages to build greater trust and relevance. Charlotte Hawkes, Director at Keystone Market Research, said: “This latest report demonstrates that real opportunities lie in understanding the differences between consumer groups and local markets. The decision to look at timber-preferring homeowners follows the very positive response to our aluminium analysis, and we have again identified a group with clear characteristics that businesses can use to refine their approach. “The regional analysis is particularly valuable for installers. Understanding what matters locally allows them to demonstrate that they understand their customers, build trust and make their product and service proposition more relevant. “With just 7% of homeowners saying salespeople addressed what mattered most
to them very well during their last window purchase, yet 53% saying they would spend more with companies that demonstrated a clear understanding of their needs, there is clear room for improvement. Our Consumer Fenestration Trends Reports are designed to help the industry close that gap.” Alongside these special features, the report confirms continuing market trends, with quality, security and energy efficiency remaining the leading homeowner priorities. uPVC continues to dominate material preferences, while traditional casement windows, sliding patio doors and triple glazing retain strong consumer interest. The latest results also indicate greater confidence in home improvement investment, with more homeowners planning to increase their spending than reduce it during the remainder of the year.

COASTAL GROUP BACKS SOUTH POLE CYCLING ATTEMPT WITH CUSTOM-ENGINEERED BIKE HITCH Cornwall hardware manufacturer sponsors endurance explorer James Benson-King and designs bespoke stainless steel component for his Antarctic expedition. Coastal Group, Cornwall-based manufacturer of premium door and window hardware, has announced a brand ambassador partnership with endurance explorer James Benson-King as he prepares to attempt the first solo, unsupported cycle to the South Pole in November 2026. Loren Jenner, Managing Director, Coastal Group, said: "James embodies everything we stand for: resilience, precision and never settling for anything less than built-to-last.

When he approached us, it was immediately clear this was the right partnership. We build hardware that has to perform without failure; James puts that same demand to the test in conditions that are about as hostile as it gets." As part of the partnership, Coastal Group's design and engineering team worked directly with James to develop and manufacture a bespoke fat bike hitch from stainless steel. The component serves a dual purpose for James’s expedition: connecting James's sled to his bike, and providing a solid push point when terrain becomes too soft, steep or broken to ride. Phil Walklett, Design & Engineering Manager at Coastal Group, said: "James came to us with a clear brief: one
The bike hitch is designed to withstand the repeated mechanical strain of pushing a fully loaded bike and sled, carrying in excess of 130kg of gear, food and fuel, across two months of Antarctic conditions, with temperatures falling below −40°C. The partnership was marked earlier this month when James stopped at Coastal Group's headquarters in St Austell during a training ride from Land's End to John O'Groats. Three members of the Coastal team joined him on the road for over 50 miles of the route through Cornwall, with the visit also including the formal handover of the finished hitch and a team photo. James Benson-King said: “From my first meeting with Coastal Group, I had an immediate connection with their team... I think due to the pride they have in what they create, and their commitment to building products that truly last. I’m incredibly proud to be an ambassador for Coastal Group, to embody their resilience and determination, and to have their support on the challenges that lie ahead.” James is also using the expedition to raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young, a charity that funds cardiac screening for young people. Supporters can sponsor a kilometre of his Antarctic route at givestar.io/gs/pedal-the-impossible.

BE TRANSPARENT WHEN TROUBLE THREATENS Fresh from securing a prepack sale of a decorative glass business in Glossop – a deal that saved all 33 jobs – and a recent series of interventions across the Leonard Curtis Group in the glass and glazing sector Mike Dillon, Director of Restructuring and Insolvency at Leonard Curtis has a view on protecting your business from current and future headwinds. Here’s his take: The glass and glazing firms we are advising tend to be dealing with historical debt and are therefore susceptible to fluctuations in their sales pipelines. Companies with a high number of employees are also especially vulnerable - increases in national insurance contributions and the minimum wage have had a major impact. When you consider a lot of these businesses are running on tight margins, it can often be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
SEVEN KEY CONSIDERATIONS: 1 Don’t bury your head It’s very easy to fall into the ‘hoping for the best’ trap, as business owners are naturally optimistic, and the alternative is too concerning to contemplate. It’s essential to take stock of the situation then bring together the relevant people to review the strategy and decide what needs to change. This needs to be done at an early stage of any distress. 2 Forecast, and then challenge it Regular forecasting, particularly cashflow, is important for any business. Once drafted projections are an extremely effective guide to developing strategy and managing dayto-day operations. Regularly review and challenge forecasts to establish how you can bridge any gaps in your cashflow. 3 Act quickly when you see trouble ahead The longer it takes to acknowledge difficulties, the quicker they accelerate, and the more problematic they become. If caught unawares, often by the time the ‘cashflow crunch’ hits and creditors are chasing for payment the options for remedial action reduce. 4 Ask for help Nobody should be afraid of asking for help, there is plenty of trusted support available from qualified professionals, including Leonard Curtis, and we have a very open-

door approach. More businesses could be saved if issues were taken on board and specialist advice sought early. 5 Be a good communicator Once you have identified the cause of the distress and developed a plan to deal with the situation, communicating well with employees, customers and suppliers will help turn a ‘distressed situation’ around. So, knowing what to say and when to say it is important and part of the guidance we can provide. 6 Engage with lenders and creditors The simple advice is to engage with lenders and creditors at an early stage, especially where difficult messages need to be conveyed. If you make a promise to pay later as part of a deferral arrangement, stick to it, otherwise, your credibility may be damaged and confidence in your ability to manage the situation is lost.

7 Don’t be afraid of insolvency Confusion surrounding the insolvency process - and fear of repercussions from seeking advice from an insolvency practitioner (IP) - means that many owner managers leave it too late to get help. The key thing to remember is as cashflow pressures increase your options typically decrease. Identifying the warning signs early often means IPs have more options available and sufficient time to implement them. Our priority - and that of most restructuring firms – is always to try to save a business if possible. Where we are consulted early enough, we can often develop a practical strategy to put the company back on a steady footing. Whether that be sourcing new finance, arrange a time to pay with HMRC, make informal payment plans with creditors, start communications with creditors, or operational restructuring. INDUSTRY
Every career has a story and every success helps pave the way for those who follow. Across the fenestration and construction industries, women continue to break barriers, driving innovation and redefining what leadership looks like. Their talent, resilience and determination are helping to shape a stronger, more inclusive future for our sector. In this special Women in Fenestration Glass News Series, we celebrate the voices, journeys and achievements of the inspiring women making a lasting impact across our sector.
THIS MONTH Sarah Ball PiGs AKA People in Glazing Society
AT WORK
What achievement in your career are you most proud of, and why?
Tell us about your career journey. What led you into the fenestration industry?
I had always loved going to PiGs events, so having the baton passed to me as the organiser was very special. It’s given me the chance to meet so many people in the industry. We have even taken PiGs to GlassBuild America three times, on top of the UK events. Plus, we climbed Kilimanjaro under the PiGs banner two years ago and raised £100,000. We are off again in October to tackle the Inca Trail in Peru. There’s a team of 14 people, and we are set to raise a huge amount of money for our Charity of the Year, Harry’s Pals.
I think I’m probably best known in the industry for PiGs, which I took over organising in 2014, but until two years ago that was a second job. I kicked off my career in the industry in 2004 as a Senior Account Manager with Michael Rigby Associates, then went in-house at system house Synseal as Communications Manager, before setting up Balls2 Marketing, a specialist marketing agency within the glazing industry with my husband, Andy Ball. When we sold the agency two years ago, I focused on growing PiGs AKA People in Glazing Society and this year I set up Women in Fenestration Network.
What does your current role involve, and what do you enjoy most about it? I think my PiGs and WFN ‘jobs’ are the best in the world! Because they are both peoplefocused, I get to talk to a lot of interesting people. The industry is renowned as being people-first and the relationships often become friendships. What helps this is that I meet up with people at their most
stress-free – PiGs networking evenings are designed to be relaxed. Adding WFN into the mix has given me a renewed perspective on women in the industry. Together with Sioned, who I first met on an industry charity challenge, Paddle to Pedal, in 2017, we have been impressed by the take-up by women in the industry who value what we have set out to achieve. What’s surprised us both is the strength of support from the men.
How have you seen opportunities for women in the fenestration sector evolve during your career? Over the last 20 years, I have seen a huge increase in the number of women taking leadership roles within the industry, with many of them willing to share their experiences. There’s still an imbalance in numbers, and that’s reflected across all jobs. A lot of the positions taken by women are in support roles, so remain hidden, and there are pockets where the imbalance is really noticeable, for example, within technical roles, on the factory floor, in installation and in senior management positions. However, there are some companies and organisations that are ahead of the curve, and it’s these we are able to use as exemplars for the rest of the industry. There’s a massive shortage of labour in the industry, and making it more visible to women can only help with attracting new talent. Part of the reason for setting up Women in Fenestration Network was to promote women already working within the glazing supply chain to attract more women into the industry.
What advice would you give to other women considering a career in fenestration or construction-related industries? There are masses of opportunities within this amazing industry at every level. It’s a
22
people-first industry and talent is recognised. There’s still a massive entrepreneurial spirit in the industry, so if you’re good – you’ll be noticed!
Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future of the industry? The people – firstly, that the face-toface events of PiGs will continue to grow as more people find it a good way to build business relationships. Plus, I see that WFN will help increase the number of women coming into the industry, which will make it stronger.
AT REST
How do you switch off after a busy day at work? I find cooking really relaxing and now I work from home, I find it a great way to separate work and home life. Apart from that, walking our dog Lily, the Labradoodle, and watching crime series on TV, but never true crime though, as that’s way too stressful.
What does the perfect weekend look like for you? We are very lucky to have a little getaway in Woodhall Spa, and spending the weekend there is pretty perfect. There’s so much to do, including a superb cinema that hasn’t changed much since its opening in 1922, plus a great choice of pubs and cafes.
Is there a book, film, podcast or TV series you’ve enjoyed recently that you’d recommend? The latest book that really grabbed me was Raising Hare, beautifully written by a journalist who rescued a hare during lockdown.

AT PLAY
If you weren’t working in fenestration, what career do you think you would have pursued?
Do you have a favourite holiday destination or dream place you’d love to visit? I love a road trip and I have been fortunate to do a few in the US. But my dream is to drive across more European countries and take the dog!
I really wish that I had had better career advice at school. Looking back, I think I would have enjoyed being more practical.
What hobby or activity brings you the most joy when you’re away from work?
One of my daughters is an electrician and I think that would have suited me too.
Walking! It’s something I like to do every day locally in Derbyshire, but many of the
most memorable days of my life have been the walks I have done. They are not all long, but all spectacular. Included in my favourites are Samaria Gorge – Crete; the Walk of the Gods – Amalfi Coast; Inca Trail – Peru; Moro Rock – Sequoia National Park; Gros Piton – St Lucia; Golden Cap – Dorset; and, of course, Kilimanjaro – Tanzania.
Finally, what’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received— whether for work or life? Say ‘yes’ and work out how to deliver it afterwards! https://www.womeninfenestration.co.uk/

TOMMY TRINDER BRINGS 7,000 MAKEOVERS TO LIFE
Tommy Trinder's 'indistinguishable-from-reality' visualiser races past 7,000 transformations within its first ten weeks of live use. Window and door retailers have now clicked Tommy Trinder's big purple Bring It To Life button more than 7,000 times - transforming standard property mockups into presentation-ready images that look like real photographs. The landmark was reached within the feature's first ten weeks of live use; in total, 7,028 makeovers have been completed for more than 1,100 homeowners. "When we launched Bring It To Life, we knew it had a thumping great 'wow' factor," says Tommy Trinder founder and CEO, Chris Brunsdon. "What we did not know was how quickly it would become part of the everyday sales process.
engineered to preserve the proposed product design from frame style and colour to sash alignment and glazing bars. The result turns the traditional 'you'll have to imagine it' sales conversation on its head. "A homeowner can be nervous about making a bold change to their biggest asset," continues Chris. "A dark frame, a different window style or a premium front door can be hard to picture from a swatch or technical drawing. Bring It To Life lets the salesperson say: 'Here it is. This is how your home could look.'
"One picture may be worth a thousand words. Seven thousand pictures are worth an awful lot of confident customers - and, we hope, a fair few orders." The first ten weeks averaged more than 100 makeovers a day, suggesting the 10,000 milestone will not be far behind. 7,000 'wow' moments - and counting. "Seven thousand makeovers is not people having a quick play with AI. These images are sitting inside real quotes and real sales conversations, helping homeowners choose colours, styles and upgrades with confidence." Built into Tommy Trinder's visualiser, the AI-driven feature takes a standard makeover and adds realistic glass reflections, interior depth, lighting, shadows and environmental blending. TIME TO START A DIFFERENT CONVERSATION ABOUT AI Automation, integrated CNC machine links and modern business software have transformed the window, door and façade industry. Fabricators routinely achieve levels of workflow consistency and operational predictability that would have been unimaginable just 10 or 15 years ago. Solutions such as EvoNet and Logikal MES also allow businesses to monitor operational performance in unprecedented detail. It is now possible to see what is happening across an entire production environment at the touch of a button – a significant achievement. However, as with any manufacturing business, greater automation changes where attention needs to be focused. A production plan may still be running efficiently while
costs begin to shift beneath the surface. Orders may continue to move through established workflows even as supplier issues or delivery risks start to build in the background. None of these developments necessarily signals an immediate problem, but they may indicate that assumptions which previously held true are no longer reliable.
organisation, by which point the available options may already be more limited.
Visibility alone does not guarantee control. The information businesses need often already exists somewhere within the organisation, but it remains isolated across procurement, production, finance or customer service. The real challenge is recognising what matters before the impact becomes obvious.
Set aside the AI tools designed simply to speed up repetitive tasks. The real opportunity is understanding how AI can help businesses interpret what is happening across their operations while there is still time to respond.
Operational issues rarely develop because of a single event. More often, they emerge gradually across different parts of the business. A procurement problem may not affect production immediately, while a delay may only become apparent later through missed delivery dates. Viewed individually, these developments can appear routine. Their significance often only becomes clear when the effects begin to surface elsewhere in the
“It is easy to assume that AI and automation are the same thing because the two are closely connected. They are not. The distinction matters because they serve different purposes.”
This is a very different challenge from simply executing processes efficiently, and one where automation may effectively have reached its natural limit. This is where the industry needs to start having a different conversation about AI.
Businesses are unlikely to benefit from another disconnected source of information. At Forterro, we are seeing customers looking to use AI within the workflows where work is already taking place. Their objective is to identify operational risks, emerging opportunities and developing issues before they become visible elsewhere in the business. It is easy to assume that AI and automation are the same thing because the two are closely connected. They are not. The distinction matters because they serve different purposes. Automation is focused on execution, enabling organisations to carry out processes consistently, accurately and at

scale. AI, by contrast, helps businesses understand what is changing around those processes, highlighting patterns, risks and opportunities that may require attention. The greatest value comes when the two work together. AI can identify an emerging issue, while automation ensures a timely and consistent response. Whether that involves workflow orchestration, warehouse robotics or production planning, combining AI with automation enables manufacturers to respond faster and with greater confidence. This ability to recognise change earlier is becoming increasingly valuable. Rising costs, supplier performance issues and shifts in demand rarely appear overnight. They build gradually before affecting margins, delivery performance or customer satisfaction. The earlier these changes are identified, the more options businesses have available. That could mean spotting margin pressure before month-end reporting, recognising delivery risks before customers notice them, identifying changes in demand before inventory becomes a problem, or uncovering connections across procurement, production, finance and service that would otherwise remain hidden. For much of the past decade, the focus has been on making manufacturing operations more efficient and predictable. That remains essential, particularly in today’s challenging market. At the same time, many manufacturers are recognising that predictability has its limits. Processes may continue to perform as expected while the conditions around them begin to change. That is reshaping expectations of industrial software. The question is no longer simply how systems help businesses execute processes more efficiently, but how quickly they can recognise the changes that will affect those processes next. For fabricators across the window, door and façade sector, that is becoming an increasingly important conversation. www.forterro.com/en/windows-and-doors By Carrie Tallet, Product Manager, Forterro

ADMINBASE AND KEYSTONE LAUNCH LANDMARK UK-WIDE INSTALLER RESEARCH PROJECT Ab Initio, creator of the industry leading AdminBase installer management system, has commissioned Keystone Market Research to work on an independent, major new research project – the UK Installer Insights Report. This is the first detailed installer survey to have been carried out for more than two decades, diving deep into the experiences, thoughts and opinions of this front line sector of the industry. The findings will be published in The UK Installer Insights Report, a series of six white papers designed to give installers, suppliers, manufacturers and service providers a clearer, evidence-based understanding of, and insight into, the market. These white papers will be available to download freely by anyone in the industry as they are released. The initiative has been developed in response to a lack of openly available, independent research into the installer sector. While suppliers and service providers regularly make decisions intended to support installation businesses, these decisions are often based on individual experiences, anecdotal evidence or longestablished assumptions. By publishing the research freely, Keystone aims to provide a more reliable benchmark against which businesses can evaluate their strategies, products, services and customer support. Rhonda Ridge, founder and managing director of AdminBase, said: “AdminBase has worked alongside installation businesses

“AdminBase has worked alongside installation businesses for more than two decades, so we see first-hand how their working environment continues to change.” for more than two decades, so we see first-hand how their working environment continues to change. Costs, regulation, customer expectations, administration and technology are all placing new demands on installers, yet there seemed no evidencebased assessment of the changing priorities when running a window installation company. “We wanted to support a genuinely independent research project that would benefit the whole industry, rather than simply focus on our own products or customers. Keystone has given installers the freedom to share their experiences honestly and has turned those responses into insight that can support better decision-making. “Making the entire series freely available is important. We want installers, suppliers, manufacturers and industry organisations to use the findings, discuss them and consider how we can collectively create a stronger and more efficient sector.” Charlotte Hawkes, Director of Keystone Market Research, added: “While Keystone Market Research has conducted many installer studies for individual organisations, this project is the first time findings on this scale have been made available openly to the wider industry. The research offers a unique opportunity to look beyond individual experiences and gain a broader understanding of what installers really think, how they run their businesses and the challenges they face every day. At Keystone, we believe the best decisions are built on a genuine understanding of customers and I’d like to thank AdminBase for commissioning this research which enables companies throughout the supply

chain to confidently understand installer needs. I’d also like to thank every installer who took the time to participate as it’s their openness and honesty that make this research so valuable - I hope they see their experiences and perspectives accurately reflected throughout the series. The first white paper in the series, What Makes a True Supplier Partner?, will be released shortly.

BUILDERS MERCHANT BUILDING INDEX SALESTRACKER DEMAND GROWS Q2 MERCHANT SALES DOWN -1.2% AS SUPPLIERS YEAR-ON-YEAR. VOLUMES FALL ACCELERATE THE PATH FROM LEAD -6.6%. PRICES RISE +5.8% TO ORDER Insight Data is reporting growing demand for Salestracker, as suppliers of products and services into the glazing industry replace fragmented sales processes with a single platform that manages leads, quotes and orders from first enquiry to confirmed sale.
The way homeowners buy home improvement products is always changing. Whilst traditional methods such as brochures, samples and drawings still have their place, digital technology is helping installers provide customers with a clearer understanding of their projects before installation begins. For installers, creating a successful customer journey involves more than simply providing a quote. Customers want to visualise how their new windows, doors or extensions will look, understand their options and feel confident before making a decision. This is where integrated design and visualisations tools are becoming increasingly valuable. Solutions such as vsHome allows installers to create detailed 3D designs, generate accurate quotations and present projects professionally during customer appointments. These designs can be brought to life using VisiRoom, PST’s augmented reality tool. By placing products into a customer’s own environment, installers can show homeowners how different styles, colours and configurations could look within their property before any work begins. Together, vsHome and VisiRoom provide installers with a complete sales solution, from creating the initial design through to helping customers visualise the finished result. As VisiRoom is included with every vsHome licence, installers can move from the design element to augmented reality without much effort. This not only enhances the presentation of a project but also helps improve communication between installers and homeowners. As customer expectations continue to evolve, technology is playing an increasingly important role in helping home improvement businesses stand out. By combining accurate design, visualisation and sales tools, installers can create a more engaging experience while making the journey from enquiry to installation smoother and more efficient.

WE FIT TOGETHER - A SPOTLIGHT ON FOREL
FOREL: USING FIT SHOW 2025 TO LAUNCH TRIPLE THIN AND SPARK NEW MARKET CONVERSATIONS Forel’s presence at FIT Show 2025 gave the business a powerful platform to introduce its triple thin concept to the UK and Ireland market and start conversations around the future of high-performance glazing.
“FIT Show gave us the perfect platform to introduce triple thin to the UK and Ireland market and start important conversations about what comes next for glass processing.” next for glass processing. The response from visitors confirmed there is real appetite for innovation that delivers both performance and commercial value.”
For the Italian glass processing specialist, the show was not just about visibility - it was about proving that innovation, simplicity and relevance can create real engagement with the right audience.
ABOUT FOREL Founded in 1976, Forel has grown from a family business into an international partner to the glass industry, designing and manufacturing flat glass and insulating glass processing solutions entirely in-house from its headquarters in Vallio di Roncade, Italy. Today, the business employs around 280 people, serves more than 70 countries and continues to invest heavily in research, development and innovation.
WHY FIT SHOW 2025 MATTERED For Forel UK & Ireland, FIT Show 2025 was the right place to launch its triple thin concept and speak directly to manufacturers, processors and systems houses. The business has long viewed the show as the premium event for the UK and Ireland glass and fenestration industry, and the 2025 edition provided the ideal environment to present a new idea to a highly relevant audience. Joe Hague, FOREL Intl Business Development Manager, comments: “FIT Show is the premium event for the UK and Ireland glass and fenestration industry. I have supported FIT Show since inception and found it to be the most relevant event to showcase products to local customers.”
LAUNCHING TRIPLE THIN Forel used FIT Show 2025 to unveil its concept for the manufacture of a triple IGU using a 1.0mm inner glass pane. The idea was designed to address a very real market challenge: how to deliver the performance benefits of triple glazing while reducing the weight, size and cost barriers that can hold the market back.
28
The response was immediate and encouraging. By showing the concept in person, Forel was able to explain not only the technology itself, but also the wider commercial value it could bring to IGU manufacturers looking to future-proof their businesses. Brian McDonald CEO of Forel UK and Ireland, adds: “We knew that leading the industry on this topic was going to be about engagement, because the potential benefits the product provides manufacturers could solve many future challenges in the production of triple IGU.”
MARKET RESPONSE AND COMMERCIAL VALUE The feedback Forel received from IGU manufacturers, processors and systems houses confirmed that the concept had struck a chord. As the wider market continues to focus on energy performance, compliance and production efficiency, the triple thin proposition has helped position Forel as a business that is not only innovative, but also commercially relevant.
Brian adds: “In a mature industry sector like ours, bringing something new to market will always be judged by its relevance, ROI and customer requirement. Our customers recognised that future-proofing their business with our equipment is a smart way of guaranteeing competitiveness in an everchanging market dynamic.” Why the stand made a difference Forel’s FIT Show 2025 presence gave the team an important opportunity to go beyond a product explanation and have meaningful face-to-face conversations with the market. The stand helped create momentum, build awareness and demonstrate that the concept was not just theoretical - it was practical, achievable and backed by real-world manufacturing experience. The company’s approach also aligned closely with the increasing focus on the role of glass in meeting thermal performance targets, particularly as regulations continue to evolve in the UK and Ireland.
LOOKING AHEAD The success of FIT Show 2025 gave Forel a springboard for future conversations, including its planned return in 2027. But the real story is what happened in 2025: a new idea introduced to the market, strong engagement from the right audience, and a platform that helped Forel move its message forward. Brian continues: “FIT Show gave us the perfect platform to introduce triple thin to the UK and Ireland market and start important conversations about what comes
“Any opportunity where you can maximise your time by visiting all your relevant business contacts because they are all in the same place is obvious. When you couple that with seeing up-to-date equipment and becoming more knowledgeable about industry topics and changes, it becomes a no-brainer”. Nickie West, FIT Show event director concludes: “Forel is a fantastic example of a business using FIT Show to launch innovation and have meaningful conversations with the market. Visitors benefited from seeing a company that brings real technical expertise, practical solutions and a clear focus on the future of glass manufacturing. We’re delighted to welcome them back for FIT Show 2027.” Forel’s expanded presence for 2027 reflects the strong response to its FIT Show 2025 debut, where it launched its triple thin concept for manufacturing a triple IGU using a 1.0mm inner glass pane. The launch generated significant interest from IGU manufacturers, processors and systems houses, helping position Forel at the centre of conversations about performance, efficiency and future-proofing in the glass sector. The more than tripled stand space for 2027 mirrors that innovation-led message and underlines the scale of Forel’s ambition for the next show. With a significantly larger footprint and a prominent frontline location, the company will be able to maximise the impact of its participation and showcase its latest machinery innovations to an even broader audience. Forel will utilise FIT Show 2027 to showcase its latest machinery innovations, reconnect with customers and continue conversations that began at FIT Show 2025 around the future of high-performance glass processing.

DANNY WILLIAMS
‘COLD CALLING’ Each month our special correspondent Danny Williams* replies to a reader’s letter...
STOP SELLING WINDOWS By the time you read this it will probably be raining sideways, it’ll be getting dark at half past four and you’ll have forgotten that only a few weeks ago you were wandering around your house in your YFronts wondering whether Screwfix sold domestic airconditioning. That is Britain. We have the collective climatic memory of a goldfish. Give it a few weeks and we’ll be complaining about draughts and discussing U-values again, having conveniently forgotten that much of this summer our beautifully insulated homes felt like bloody greenhouses. But perhaps we shouldn’t forget quite so quickly this time. Whatever your views on climate change — and before anybody starts writing to the editor, I’m not gluing myself to the M25 and I haven’t bought a hemp shirt — British summers are getting hotter and many of our homes are spectacularly badly equipped for it. But within that lies a huge opportunity for our industry (and heaven knows we need everything we can get after a shocking year so far). Apart from aesthetics, we have always sold replacement windows on one basic promise: they’ll keep your house warmer. Better insulation, lower U-values, low-E glass, argon-filled units, triple glazing. Keep the expensive heat you’ve paid for inside. Nothing wrong with that. But while this
roasting summer remains fresh in punters’ minds, perhaps we should spend more time talking about what happens when the heat is coming from the other side of the glass. The industry even has a number for it. The g-value, or solar factor, measures how much solar energy passes through the glass and ends up inside the building. The lower the g-value, broadly speaking, the less of the sun’s heat gets through. Approved Document O, introduced to tackle overheating in new residential buildings in England, specifically addresses solar gain and glazing g-values. Yet ask the average homeowner about the g-value of their windows and they’ll assume you’ve started talking about the G-spot. Ask a few — inevitably male — window salespeople and you might get the same response. Solar-control glass isn’t some futuristic product involving NASA and a bloke in a white coat. It’s been around for years. The big glass manufacturers produce coated products designed to control how much solar energy enters a building, though they remain far more familiar in commercial developments than home improvements.
sliding doors, rooflights and lanterns and built glass boxes on the backs of houses. We’ve become obsessed with bringing the outside in and, in doing so, we also brought the sun in. Anyone with a large south- or west-facing glazed extension knows exactly what I’m talking about. That fabulous four-metre slider looks magnificent in March. By late afternoon on a 32-degree day in July, you can cook a chicken in front of it. And here’s where our sales pitch needs to change. Stop selling windows. Start selling comfortable homes instead. That requires us to understand the building rather than simply measure the hole we’re putting a new frame into. Which direction does the elevation face? How much glass is there? Which rooms become unbearably hot? Would solar-control glazing help? What about shading and ventilation?
“Come December, of course, we’ll have forgotten all about this. It’ll be eight degrees, drizzle will be running down the windows and some bloke from the Met Office will be warning us about Storm Kevin.” And it doesn’t take a scientist to work out that the giant sliders Mr and Mrs Jones want overlooking their south-west facing garden deserve some thought about solar gain: warm in January, cooler in July, light and airy without becoming an oven. Plus, of course, secure, quiet and comfortable. Suddenly we aren’t competing solely on frames, handles and price. We’re advising people how to make their homes work better.
It doesn’t mean specifying the lowest possible g-value everywhere. Solar gain is useful during a British winter and different elevations have different requirements. Solar-control glazing, shading, ventilation and insulation all form parts of the overheating equation.
Come December, of course, we’ll have forgotten all about this. It’ll be eight degrees, drizzle will be running down the windows and some bloke from the Met Office will be warning us about Storm Kevin. We’ll go straight back to telling homeowners how wonderfully our windows keep the heat in.
That’s precisely where the opportunity lies for good installers.
But next summer will come. And the one after that.
Instead of asking Mrs Jones whether she’d like white or anthracite grey and whether she wants Georgian bars, we could have a proper conversation about how she actually wants her house to feel. Homeowners already know which rooms become too hot and which are cold spots.
Maybe the next big step for the replacement-window industry isn’t another frame, another colour or shaving another decimal point off a U-value. Maybe it’s recognising that energy efficiency isn’t only about keeping heat in. It’s about controlling heat altogether.
“Better insulation, lower U-values, low-E glass, argon-filled units, triple glazing. Keep the expensive heat you’ve paid for inside.”
For 40 years we’ve promised Mrs Jones our windows will keep her warm; perhaps it’s time we mentioned they could stop her being cooked as well.
In other words, we can make windows that are very good at keeping warmth in during winter and much better at preventing unwanted solar heat entering during summer.
SO WHY AREN’T WE SELLING THAT? Especially when you consider what we’ve done to British houses. We’ve knocked walls down, installed bifolds, fitted enormous

DHF LAUNCHES NEW SMART-SCANNABLE CSCS CARDS TO STRENGTHEN COMPETENCE CHECKS ACROSS THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has launched a new generation of smartscannable CSCS cards for professionals working across the door, gate and loadingbay industries, helping construction sites quickly and easily verify the competence, qualifications and training of operatives. The new physical cards feature a smart scannable chip which authorised site personnel, including site managers, supervisors, security teams and induction teams, can scan using the CSCS Smart Check app. This provides access to verified, up-to-date information held securely on the cardholder’s record, including qualifications, completed DHF training, occupational endorsements and expiry information. Rather than storing information directly on the card itself, the smart scannable card links to a secure database which means that records can be updated as operatives complete further training, achieve qualifications or gain additional endorsements, providing a more accurate and current picture of their competence. DHF will manage the processing and administration of card applications, continuing its commitment to supporting high standards of competence and safety across the industries it represents. “Competence is at the heart of everything we do, and these new smart-scannable CSCS cards provide a simple and reliable way for sites to confirm that operatives have the right training and qualifications for the work they are carrying out”, explains DHF’s CEO, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “The construction industry is continually evolving, and people’s skills and knowledge develop throughout their careers. Having access to an up-to-date digital record means employers and site teams can see a more complete picture of an individual’s competence, rather than solely relying only on information printed on a card." The new cards build on DHF’s existing CSCS Partner Card Scheme, which was established in collaboration with the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) in 2019. The scheme supports professionals working across a wide range of occupations, including industrial doors and shutters, domestic garage doors, automated gates and traffic barriers, metal and timber doors, as well as loading-bay equipment. Existing cardholders will receive the new smart-scannable card when they renew their current card. SMART AS STANDARD: WHY HAS THE DOOR INDUSTRY BEEN LEFT BEHIND
JUSTIN HARRIS SHARES HIS THOUGHTS ON SMART TECHNOLOGY AND ITS GROWING ROLE IN OUR INDUSTRY Smart technology is everywhere, except, it seems, in the part of the home responsible for protecting everything and everyone inside it. We control heating, lighting, appliances and security from our phones. A basic LED bulb might cost £5, yet for £7 it can offer an app, colours and dimming. Why, then, has the door industry expected homeowners to pay £500, £800 or even £1,000 more to make a door smart? We should be brutally honest. Smart perimeter access has not been held back because homeowners cannot understand it. They use smart technology every day. It has been held back because our industry has not consistently offered the right product, confidence, simplicity, support and price.
WHY HAS ADOPTION REMAINED LOW? Many smart products are retrofitted or combine a device, cylinder and lock from different suppliers. Compatibility and integration are not the same. Door manufacturers and installers carry the risk of difficult setup, unreliable operation, callbacks and uncertainty over responsibility. If they do not trust the product, they will not propose it. If they do not demonstrate the benefits, homeowners will not know why they might want it. Low adoption may reflect industry confidence, not homeowner interest.
SMART READY IS NOT A SMART DOOR Some doors described as smart ready have no smart capability when installed. The homeowner may buy something later, but even then, it may only monitor whether the door is open or closed.
together. There is no pick and mix from unrelated suppliers. Installation, app setup and calibration are simple. Key operation remains, while the homeowner gains smart control and confirmation that the door is physically closed and locked. That is “jam tomorrow”. A sensor can provide information, but it observes the door; it does not control it. It cannot necessarily lock or unlock the door, manage access or let someone enter without a key. A smart door should provide visibility and action. Crafted Synergy is installed as a complete solution from day one, not a promise the homeowner must complete later.
ENGINEERED AS A SMART DOORSET A smart turner is only as effective as its lock. Many locks were never designed for motorised operation. Real doors move, bow and twist. Weather and seasonal change affect the force
required. A person can compensate. A smart turner cannot. Winkhaus did not rush another standalone product to market. AV4 and Thunderbolt accommodate the realities of a working doorset, with Polaris designed specifically around them. We have placed doors under duress and repeatedly tested whether Polaris continues to operate. Comparative assessments with prospective customers reinforce the conclusion: the mechanical lock is critical to successful smart operation. That is the difference between attaching smart technology to a door and engineering a smart doorset.
ONE COMPLETE ECOSYSTEM Crafted Synergy combines German engineered locks, cylinder security, sensing and smart technology within one purpose designed ecosystem. The components have been dovetailed and tested
Technology sits discreetly inside. Outside, the door retains its traditional appearance and compatible furniture. Smart functionality should be experienced, not displayed to the street. The sale is not app, motor or sensor. It is children entering without keys, managed access for relatives, carers or tradespeople, and reassurance that the door is secure. Our lifestyle videos and homeowner materials will demonstrate these real-life benefits. Customers receive the product, story and support needed to take it confidently to market.
A COMPLETE SMART DOOR FOR AS LITTLE AS £180 MORE With Crafted Synergy and Polaris, the additional cost to the homeowner can be as little as £180. Over a conservative 15 year door life, that is £12 a year, £1
a month or less than 25 pence a week. They receive mechanical security, active access, meaningful door information, simple operation and real family benefits from installation. That is price plus: engineering, integration, testing, simplicity, immediate functionality, design freedom, homeowner benefits and marketing support at a realistic price.
BE FIRST AND LEAD THE CHANGE The market is difficult. That makes differentiation more important, not less. When competing doors look similar, why should homeowners choose yours? Crafted Synergy changes that conversation. Sell how the door protects, operates and supports the way the homeowner lives. Stand out, increase value, sell more doors and improve profitability. Innovation often wins in difficult markets. The products are ready, the benefits are clear and the additional cost is realistic. Our challenge is simple: be first and lead the change. Smart technology has changed the rest of the home. It is time for the door industry to catch up.

WINNING BY DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY
HOW ALIMAX PARTNERED WITH WINDOW WARE TO BRING ITS SIGNATURE PREMIUM SERVICE TO A BRAND-NEW PVC-U LINE
Nestled in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, on the edge of the New Forest, trade fabricator Alimax is quietly defying the usual industry narrative. In today’s window and door market, the traditional playbook is predictable: fabricators established in PVC-U look to diversify into aluminium to capture the affluent, design-led residential market. However, Alimax, founded nearly seven years ago, has just done the exact reverse. Already highly successful specialists in premium aluminium windows and doors, bi-folds, patios, and heritage steel-look systems, Alimax has successfully branched out into PVC-U. While some industry peers viewed the move with scepticism, Alimax did it for the simplest and oldest reason in business: their customers asked them to.
AN INSTALLER-DRIVEN EXPANSION "Our installers were so satisfied with our aluminium products and go-the-extra-mile service that they told us they’d happily buy PVC-U from us too if we made it," says Mark Matthews, Director of Alimax. “We realised there was a genuine demand for a premium, fuss-free PVC-U supplier in the area, so we decided to fulfil it." That reputation for hassle-free service built on everything from reliable, early site deliveries down tricky country lanes to a friendly, nothing-is-too-much-trouble attitude - gave their local installer base the confidence to back the new venture from day one. To house the new operation, Alimax invested in a mezzanine floor space within their factory, adopting the advanced
34
VEKA Omnia double-flush, System 10 and Rustique double-rebated system. This new PVCu range - particularly in high-end finishes like Irish Oak and Pebble Grey instantly took off, turning Alimax into the regional go-to specialist for inward-opening Omnia residential and French door systems. Setting up a brand-new fabrication line from scratch requires more than just machinery and profile; it requires a flawless, reliable hardware package that matches the fabricator's premium reputation. For that, Alimax turned to trusted hardware provider, Window Ware.
THE POWER OF A RELIABLE SUPPLY The relationship between the two companies runs deep. Both Mark Matthews and Alimax Area Sales Manager, Les Maros, have used Window Ware throughout their decades-long careers. "Wherever we go in the industry, we always come back to Window Ware," says Les Maros. "In this trade, relationships are everything. When you call Window Ware, you’re talking to people who have been there for years. There is a massive amount of accumulated knowledge. They know our business, they know what we need, and they just make it incredibly easy to do business with them." Window Ware was a vital partner for the new PVC-U launch. They worked closely with the Alimax team to advise on and spec the perfect hardware package to add maximum value to the VEKA system, featuring robust Armis window and door handles, highsecurity Yale door and window locking systems and Eurospec cylinders. Crucially, Window Ware’s exceptional logistics model allowed Alimax to remain lean and agile. "We don’t carry massive amounts of hardware inventory because we simply
don't have the storage room," Les explains. "But we don’t need to. Window Ware functions as a seamless extension of our own warehouse. With their solid range of products, high stock levels and dependable next-day delivery, we can fulfil orders rapidly without tying up floor space or capital in component storage."
OBSESSIVE QUALITY AND DOTTING THE I'S This supply-chain reliability allows the Alimax team to focus entirely on what they do best: uncompromising quality control and installer-focused USPs. Unlike most manufacturers who assemble patio and bi-fold doors horizontally on tables, Alimax manufactures and tests all their doors vertically. This allows them to rigorously test the operation, video the working door, and guarantee it leaves the factory in perfect working order. Furthermore, Alimax pre-fits all bi-fold magnets and trickle vents in the factory, saving installers valuable time on-site. They even record video footage of all finished products before and after they are wrapped in protective foam edging for transit. This acts as a final quality check, guaranteeing every frame leaves the factory in pristine condition and providing clear proof of quality before it hits the delivery truck.
in a measured way that ensures quality never slips. Looking forward, the partnership with Window Ware is set to deepen. To meet escalating demand, Alimax is currently recruiting additional fabrication staff and plans to leverage Window Designer software to allow customers to generate instant, autonomous quotes. On the innovation front, they are working closely with Window Ware to explore Yale’s new SensCheck-ready smart door and window locking systems as a standard high-tech USP for their premium residential lines. Mark Barzotelli, Area Sales Manager at Window Ware, concludes, "Alimax is the perfect example of a business that succeeds by prioritising quality and service. By bucking the trend to introduce a premium PVC-U line backed by trusted hardware brands like Yale and Armis, they gave the market exactly what it was asking for. It proves that by always staying close to the customer, you win every time. We are thrilled to be the engine behind their supply chain and look forward to supporting their continued growth." For more information, call 01234 242724, email sales@windowware.co.uk or visit www.windowware.co.uk.
"We aren't trying to be the cheapest on the market," admits Mark Matthews. "But you won't get the same ‘right first time' service anywhere else. People buy from people. That personal connection and attention to detail is the glue that keeps installers coming back to us."
A PARTNERSHIP BUILT FOR THE FUTURE This commitment to controlled, organic growth via exceptional service has driven a steady stream of repeat business and wordof-mouth referrals. Alimax is growing, but

ACCOUNTABILITY IS BECOMING THE NEXT CHALLENGE FOR CONSTRUCTION PRODUCT INFORMATION For years, our industry has measured success by product performance. Can it achieve the required U-value? Has it been tested? Does it meet the relevant standards? Those questions remain fundamental, but I believe another is becoming just as important.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE INFORMATION BEHIND THE PRODUCT THAT'S ULTIMATELY INSTALLED? As buildings become more complex and products pass through multiple stages of manufacture, fabrication and installation, responsibility for construction product information is becoming a far more prominent part of the conversation. That's not simply because of one new standard or piece of legislation. It's the cumulative effect of the Building Safety Act, the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI), the Construction Products Reform Green Paper and emerging guidance such as PAS 2000. Together, they reflect a broader direction of travel: one that places greater emphasis on transparency, accountability and confidence in product information.
PRODUCT INFORMATION DOESN'T STAND STILL One of the biggest misconceptions is that product information is fixed. In reality, products often evolve as they move through the supply chain. A window system may be configured differently for a particular project.
“Hardware may change. Reinforcement, glazing specifications or ventilation requirements may be adapted to suit design intent or projectspecific needs.” 36
Hardware may change. Reinforcement, glazing specifications or ventilation requirements may be adapted to suit design intent or project-specific needs. None of this is unusual. In fact, it's part of delivering solutions that meet individual project requirements. The important question is whether the information supporting those changes evolves alongside the product itself.
IF YOU CHANGE IT, YOU OWN IT One principle I believe will become increasingly important is accountability for change. Where products are modified, configured differently or supplied outside their original tested arrangement, there is a growing expectation that those changes are understood, documented and supported by appropriate evidence. Emerging guidance such as PAS 2000 reinforces the role of the economic operator and the importance of ensuring product information remains accurate, current and relevant to the final installed solution.
This isn't about discouraging flexibility or innovation. It's about ensuring that when changes are made, they're understood, evidenced and appropriately supported. Ultimately, confidence in a product depends on confidence in the information behind it.
A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY It's important to recognise that accountability doesn't sit with one organisation alone. Manufacturers, fabricators, distributors, contractors and installers all contribute to delivering the final product on site. That makes collaboration more important than ever. Providing clear technical information, communicating changes effectively and understanding where responsibilities sit can help reduce uncertainty throughout the specification and delivery process. Rather than creating additional administration, this approach has the potential to improve confidence, reduce
technical queries and support betterinformed decision-making across the supply chain.
LOOKING AHEAD Product performance will always remain fundamental. But I believe the next stage of our industry's evolution is about ensuring the information supporting that performance is just as robust as the product itself. The organisations that embrace transparency, invest in high-quality product information and understand their responsibilities as products evolve through the supply chain will be better placed to support customers and build long-term confidence. Because increasingly, it's not simply about whether a product performs. It's about whether everyone involved can have confidence in the information behind it. THE RESIDENCE COLLECTION SHOWCASES ON GEORGE CLARKE’S BEAUTIFUL BUILDS On Thursday 28th May, The Residence Collection, a premium window and door designer, was spotted on an episode of George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds on Channel 4 showcasing a stunning residential property. In collaboration with designer Molecule Design and fabricator Window Tech Trade, this property was transformed using the Residence 7 window and door system.
Elliott Green, Interior Designer at Molecule Design said, “We were honoured to have our property featured on George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds. We are so proud of this renovation, and it still feels slightly surreal that it was featured on prime-time TV. We love how this turned out and can’t wait to design more properties like this one.” Jo Trotman, Sales and Marketing Manager at The Residence Collection comments, “We are so proud to see this incredible renovation featuring Residence 7 windows
and doors throughout the property. A great collaboration with fabricator Window Tech Trade, and we hope to work with them on more projects like this in the future. It is fantastic to see our products showcased on George Clarke's Beautiful Builds and to have played a part in creating such a beautiful home. We are so honoured to be a part of it!” To find out more about The Residence Collection, please visit: https://www.residencecollection.co.uk/
The renovation saw the property transformed with a total of 16 Residence 7 windows and one Residence 7 entrance door, helping to create a home that perfectly balances contemporary style with timeless character. The Residence 7 range provides a flush, modern aesthetic perfect for all properties. The front elevation features Residence 7 bay and casement windows in the colour Painswick on the exterior and Chalk White on the interior. This was completed with Georgian bars, decorative glazing beads, trickle vent covers and cills, creating an elegant, heritage-inspired appearance. At the back of the property, Residence 7 casement windows were installed in No.10 Black on the exterior and Chalk White on the interior to maintain the same flush detailing while achieving a striking contemporary finish. The installation also included a Residence 7 open-in entrance door that was half glazed, half panel in the colour Painswick. For this renovation, all products were manufactured with Timberweld® technology and fitted with double glazing, combining authentic timber-style aesthetics with the performance and low-maintenance benefits of modern PVC-U. The Residence Collection was chosen as the homeowners were looking for windows and doors that delivered a premium, modern appearance without the bulky, plastic look often associated with traditional PVC-U products. Residence 7 was the perfect solution that ticked all the boxes, offering slim sightlines, authentic timber detailing and a sophisticated finish that has already been complimented by neighbours and people passing by.

INSTALLER SUPPORT
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
THE POWER OF NETWORKS:
HOW INSTALLER SCHEMES SUPPORT MORE SALES Roofline, rainwater and cladding manufacturer Freefoam Building Products says stockists and home improvement companies can use its Registered Installer Scheme to differentiate themselves, benefit from better guarantees and maximise sales opportunities. Installer networks and schemes can be one of the most powerful sales tools available to both installation companies and their suppliers – helping them sell more product and build their businesses thanks to access to extended warranties, technical and sales support, qualified leads and more. Freefoam’s Registered Installer network, for example, has grown to include 1,200 companies across the UK. Supported by Freefoam stockists nationwide, it’s been successfully helping distributors and installers grow for nearly 20 years. Free to join, Freefoam’s Registered Installer scheme is open to all companies that install fascia, soffit, rainwater, and cladding – whether roofline fitters, window installers, roofers, home improvement companies, or general builders.
COLOUR CHOICE FOR THE WIN Being able to offer unique colour options or a matching suite of products is becoming increasingly important for many installation companies. If a homeowner chooses Anthracite or Agate Grey for their windows and doors, for example, they expect matching trims – and being able to offer fascia, soffit, and even cladding in the same colours can make for valuable add-on sales. “Offering a wide range of colours has helped us win many contracts,” agrees Terry Luscombe of Weatherproof Systems, a Plymouth Registered Installer. “I always take a sample box, supplied by Freefoam, on my first visit to customers and tell them about the 10-year guarantee offered on most cladding products.”
Registered Installer NG Roofline Windows & Doors
MARKET-LEADING GUARANTEES One of the scheme’s most popular selling points is access to the 50-year ‘Extended Lifetime Guarantee’, exclusively available to Registered Installers. A strong, clear promise that’s easy to understand, this helps installers remove the risks to buying and builds trust, giving homeowners confidence in the product as well as the company fitting it. Our 50-year guarantee on white roofline and rainwater products is an upgrade from
our standard 20-year guarantee. To qualify for this market-leading guarantee, the products fitted must be fascia, soffit, and gutters made only by Freefoam, and fitted by an official Freefoam Registered Installer who logs the project online. It gives homeowners the ultimate peace of mind, covering against warping, cracking, discolouration, and blistering. A formal guarantee certificate is issued directly to the homeowner by Freefoam or the installer after the job is completed and registered. What’s more, it’s fully transferable to new homeowners if the property is sold. Freefoam stockist UPL Building Supplies, one of the Midland’s leading independent suppliers of building materials, says: “Only Registered Installers can offer homeowners the Freefoam 50-year Lifetime Guarantee – so that’s a big plus for local fitters when they are pitching against other companies.” “Freefoam support us with the guarantees that they offer. That gets us a hell of a lot of work,” adds Steve Bray of Barnsley-based Registered Installer, C&S Fascias. Not every job qualifies for the Extended Guarantee, of course, but with 10-year guarantees on woodgrain and foiled roofline, as well as most cladding, installers can take full advantage of Freefoam’s wide range of RAL-coded coloured products.

“A lot of Registered Installers buy from us just for Freefoam.” Scott Whitlam, Building Plastics Direct
“We prefer to fit Freefoam cladding,” comments Chris Davies, of Swansea RI CJ Davies & Sons. “It has a great range of colours and the guarantee that comes with it is a real benefit too.”
BUILDING LOYALTY It isn’t just installers that the scheme can help. Stockists – who can nominate their customers to become Freefoam Registered Installers – benefit too. Many of the building materials suppliers we work with use the RI scheme to attract new customers and build stronger relationships with existing customers. “A lot of customers will buy from us just for Freefoam,” adds Scott Whitelam of Barnsley-based stockist Building Plastics Direct. “We have quite a few Registered Installers that work with us and they insist on Freefoam products.” When stockists switch to Freefoam, dedicated Registered Installers often follow suit. Mac Home Improvements in Wales has installed Freefoam products exclusively since 2007, nearly 20 years. Supplied by Building Plastics Wales, Mac HI is one of Freefoam’s ‘Top Ten’ installers regularly registering work for the Extended 50-year Guarantee, exclusive to the RI scheme. “We use Freefoam’s full range of fascias, soffits, guttering and cladding,” says Director Cathy Bressington. “There’s no-one else we’d rather use. When our previous supplier stopped selling Freefoam we moved to another stockist, because our relationship with Freefoam is so positive.” TruSeal Plastics, which has 18 trade depots across the Midlands, Yorkshire, Humberside and the North-West, ran a successful campaign to promote the scheme (which we supported with bespoke marketing

MARKETING THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE To be truly successful, no installer scheme should just be about the product: marketing and sales support is crucial too. Registered Installers get a whole package from Freefoam including installer packs, marketing literature and van signage – all to help them sell and build their own brand locally. We provide stockists and installers with professional images to use in their own social media, and a wealth of quality brochures, leaflets, samples and swatches.

SHEERLINE ADDS WEATHER TESTING RIG TO MANUFACTURING SITE Sheerline has announced the addition of a weather testing rig manufactured by K Schulten Fenstertechnik at its facility in Derbyshire.
At 3m by 3m, the rig generates forces far beyond what is typical of the UK’s weather, and tests air and water tightness, and pressure deflection. This means it can be used to assess a range of products including windows, doors and commercial systems for numerous applications and installations.
The Sheerline team have now been fullytrained on the rig and are already utilising it. Whilst it will be of benefit to the in-house Research & Development team, it will also positively impact the wider company and its customers. For example, the R&D team can now test all current products on-site to make
enhancements in line with Sheerline’s commitment to continuous improvement. It also provides the option to test more broadly, for instance, different types of hardware on different products. The benefits of this are two-fold; not only will it speed up the product development process, but it will also speed up the product approval process. Whilst the results will be treated as indicative, it will reduce the reliance on third-party test houses during the development phase. Many in the industry will be familiar with the limitations of working with third-parties for testing as there is often a lengthy process to go through, a substantial cost involved, and the testing itself can be time-intensive in an unfamiliar (off-site) setting. Additionally, having the rig in-house will add another layer of transparency, giving Sheerline customers confidence in the products they are selling. Ross Hartshorn, Sheerline’s Managing Director, commented: “This is a fantastic piece of equipment for a company that thrives on product development.” “Over the past six years, we’ve been able to launch so many products because we’re an independent systems house. Research and development that ultimately leads to new products and product enhancements is a key priority, and this isn’t going to change. This new rig will enable us to maintain this pace and our competitive advantage,” he added. To speak to a member of the team about the rig, email info@sheerline.com.

EMMEGI BOOSTS ENVIRONMENTAL EFFICIENCY Emmegi (UK) has supplied no fewer than 10 refurbished CNC, saws and pieces of industrial equipment over the past year and a half including a Phantomatic X4, a T3A and a Classic Star – an average of more than one every two months. That’s a significant increase on previous years and certainly reflects the tough market conditions - and the fact that fabricators are looking for the very best value from any investment. Of course, it's also testament to the standard of our machine refurbishment programme and the quality of the work carried out by our engineering team. But more than that, I think it reflects both a growing awareness of the environmental savings that can come from choosing refurbished over new, and the benefits that being able to demonstrate those savings can have - particularly for fabricators operating in the commercial sector. With such a focus now on ESG assessments and EPDs in our industry, Emmegi’s parent company Voilàp Holding does a huge amount of work to provide supporting evidence on the environmental efficiency of our machine ranges as part of its overall commitment to sustainability. For instance, in 2025, the company introduced an energy consumption matrix using MID (Measuring Instruments Directive) certified, ISO 14955 compliant tests to show the Watt hours per piece (Wh/ piece). Stand out figures include the Satellite XLE at 99.6 Wh/piece, the Satellite XTE at 166.3 Wh/piece, and the +Quadra L2 at 169.7 Wh/piece. These figures are up to 71.8% less than the highest average across other similar machines which are 353.03 Wh/piece. Last year Voilap also obtained its first ISO14067 certification for the Product
By Wayne Hunter, Operations Manager, Emmegi (UK) Carbon Footprint (PCF) of the Emmegi Satellite XTE and Emmegi Satellite SLE CNCs. Using standardised Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, this certification provides full transparency on the greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the machines’ entire product life cycle – from raw material to disposal. In turn, this has also allowed Emmegi to make corresponding calculations on the emission savings available from refurbishing a machine rather than building a new one. And, when you take into account the emissions avoided, the energy reduction and the improved material circularity that comes from reducing waste, the figure for the net reduction in CO2, is around 90%. One of the things being calculated is the weight of components salvaged, reused or recertified. Here in the UK, we are required to measure and report our own savings and report these back to Voilap so that they can form part of the company’s sustainability report which sets out the company’s ESG roadmap and tracks our progress. The 10 machines we have refurbished since the start of 2025 added up to an impressive 12,300kg and we have a further six machines currently undergoing refurbishment which will be added to that total this year. I’m obviously not advocating used over new every time, but I am convinced of the environmental benefits of refurbishment, and I would certainly invite fabricators who are disposing of their machines to contact us first so that we can assess the value and viability of giving that machine a useful second life. Alongside encouraging refurbishment of machines and components, Voilap has a vast programme of projects underway to facilitate our transition to net zero - all with defined targets. These include the successful move to 100% renewable energy in all the European production plants, adoption of eco-design requirements in product development and a switch to sustainable and circular materials in manufacture and packaging.

DOUBLE ISO CERTIFICATION PUTS JADE ON FIRM FOOTING FOR CONTINUING GROWTH Jade Engineering has announced it has once again achieved internationally recognised management standards, marking the culmination of a major two-year programme of investment and creating a stronger platform for the company’s next phase of growth. The Coventry-based machinery and tooling specialist has secured ISO 9001:2015 certification for quality management and ISO 45001:2018 certification for occupational health and safety. Both certifications have been awarded by BSI following a rigorous independent assessment of Jade’s systems, procedures and working practices. For Jade, the achievement represents considerably more than gaining two certificates. It represents the massive effort directors Adam Jones and Sean Mackey have poured into the business over the last three years, not just in setting up new facilities, but also implementing an entire infrastructure designed to achieve greater consistency, closer attention to customer feedback and a determination to keep improving every aspect of Jade’s overall operations. Over the past three years, Jade has invested close to £5 million in its manufacturing facilities, equipment, infrastructure and internal processes. The company has also continued to develop its product range
“We now have the facilities, structure and foundations in place. The focus is firmly on growth: expanding our capabilities, developing new solutions and helping more fabricators improve the quality, efficiency and profitability of their production.”
Sean Mackey and Adam Jones, Jade directors
and specialist engineering capabilities, enabling it to respond more effectively to the changing requirements of window and door fabricators. Sean Mackey, co-director of Jade Engineering, said: “Achieving ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 is the culmination of three years of sustained investment in our facilities, infrastructure, systems and people. We have worked hard to build a business that is properly equipped for the future, rather than simply reacting to the demands of today. “The certification process has required us to examine every part of the way we operate. It has helped us identify where we are performing well, where we can become more efficient and how we can deliver an even more consistent service to our customers.
ISO 9001 provides a framework through which Jade can monitor performance, maintain consistency and drive continuous improvement. Central to the standard is a clear understanding of customer requirements—something Jade believes is essential in an industry where production challenges can vary significantly between individual fabricators. Rather than developing machinery and tooling in isolation, Jade works closely with customers to understand the practical issues encountered on the factory floor. That feedback informs both new product development and the ongoing refinement of existing solutions. Sean continued: “Listening to customers has always been central to how Jade operates. Some of our best developments have started with a fabricator explaining a production problem and asking whether there is a better, safer or more efficient way to solve it. “ISO 9001 strengthens that process by ensuring customer feedback is captured, reviewed and used to support measurable improvement. It gives customers further
reassurance that quality is controlled throughout the business—not inspected into a product at the very end.” ISO 45001 reflects Jade’s parallel commitment to providing a safe, wellmanaged working environment for its employees and visitors. It also complements the company’s wider focus on engineering machinery and tooling that helps fabricators reduce manual intervention and adopt safer, more controlled manufacturing processes. The dual certification gives Jade a structured framework for managing future expansion without compromising the standards of quality, service and safety on which its reputation has been built. Sean concluded: “Growth only works if it is built on solid foundations. These certifications give us a robust framework through which we can grow while continuing to improve. “They also demonstrate to customers, employees and prospective partners that Jade is serious about quality, safety and long-term investment. We are proud of what the team has achieved, but this is not the finishing line. It is the foundation for what comes next.” Jade Engineering’s ISO 9001:2015 certification is valid until August 2029, while its ISO 45001:2018 certification runs until February 2029, subject to the required ongoing assessments.

because it means we can eliminate an entire separate routing process on some of our powder coated parts and do more on just this one machine.
The Ashton-under-Lyne based commercial lighting specialist put the R4I through its paces after installation by the Emmegi engineering team, and it is more than living up to expectations.
The 5-axis capability of Emmegi’s Comet R4I allows for simultaneous movement along the X, Y, and Z axes, plus continuous B-axis rotation (-15° to +90°) and 360° C-axis rotation. This means multi-face machining can be completed in one operation, removing the need for repeated repositioning of the workpiece and maintaining consistent quality across complex components
Peter Brown, Whitecroft Lighting’s Business Improvement Manager, commented: “My role is to identify and implement changes and operational enhancements here which will deliver meaningful efficiencies, and our investment in the Emmegi R4I is a typical example of that. “We wanted a machine which would deliver measurable savings on the shopfloor, while maintaining the kind of precision outputs that we rely on - and that is what we are achieving. “We reviewed four machine options from different manufacturers before we chose this R4I with a 300mm saw blade and, overall, it represented the best value solution. The 5-axis capability was a key factor for us
46
“Now that the R4I is operational and our team have undergone some excellent training from Emmegi to ensure they can make the most of its features, we can see just how much potential it offers.”
Emmegi machine range is so extensive, we can always recommend a model like the R4I which perfectly suits a customer’s requirements. We can fit the machine to the customer, rather than having to fit the customer to the machine, which some of competitors with a more limited model lineup often have to do.” Whitecroft Lighting is an award winning manufacturer of creative lighting solutions
for workspaces, healthcare and education environments. It works with customers to deliver smart, sustainable and future-proof solutions which fit their needs and vision and are also adaptable and flexible enough to evolve with their space. The ‘I’ in the R4I product identification also stands for ‘Independent’ movement of the motorised clamps, so machiningcan continue while all the clamps move as one to reposition themselves independent of the head, saving further time during the machining process. The R4Ihas a 12-piece tool magazine with guaranteed fast changeover and a mobile worktable to make for easy loading and unloading of workpieces up to 4m in length. A SHARP QUESTION FOR FABRICATORS If welds can be cleaned without a hand-held blade, why continue to expose operators to the risk? For many PVCu fabricators, the Don Carlos knife is one of those tools that has simply always been there. It is familiar, inexpensive and, in the hands of an experienced operative, capable of doing the job required. But familiarity can mask risk. The question is not so much whether an experienced operator can use a Don Carlos safely, but whether they should need to use one at all. That’s the thinking behind Jade Engineering’s JBC2 reverse butt welder cleaner. “For years, the knife has been accepted as just part of the process,” says Sean Mackey, co-owner of Jade. “But like many risks in a factory environment, it’s the frequency and repetition that deserve consideration. When you look at it from a health and safety perspective – identifying, assessing and controlling workplace hazards – you have to ask if there is still a good reason for operators to be repeatedly using a sharp hand tool to clean welded corners when the process can be mechanised.”
SMALL INVESTMENTS PREVENT BIG LOSSES The cleaning of welded corners can be a relatively small part of the overall fabrication process, which may explain why it has not traditionally attracted the

same attention as larger machinery or more obvious hazards. Yet an operative using a sharp blade repeatedly throughout each day represents a recurring manual intervention. There is also the potential for inconsistent technique, particularly when operators are working at speed or under production pressure.
“Nobody wants to be standing in a factory after an accident asking why a particular risk wasn’t addressed when there was another option available,” says Sean. “The JBC2 isn’t a complicated solution. It is about looking at a very familiar process and recognising that there is a better way of doing it.”
For the fabricator, that creates more than one consideration. There is the immediate health and safety question, but also the potential consequences of an incident: injury, lost time, investigation, disruption and the wider impact on the workforce.
For businesses still relying on a Don Carlos to clean welded corners, that makes the JBC2 worth a closer look. The investment may be relatively small, but removing a repetitive sharp-tool operation from the factory floor could deliver something considerably more valuable: greater peace of mind.
“The important thing is to look at the process rather than the individual,” Sean explains. “If someone has been doing a job safely for ten years, that doesn’t necessarily mean the process itself carries no risk. A sensible business should continually ask whether that risk can be reduced or removed.”
Sean Mackey
www.jade-eng.co.uk
Rather than relying on an operator to manually trim the weld, the JBC2 mechanises the cleaning operation, removing the need for the Don Carlos as part of that process. It has been developed as a relatively compact and straightforward addition that can slot into an existing fabrication operation, and, priced reasonably, is a modest investment in the context of industrial machinery – particularly when considered against the potential cost and disruption associated with a workplace incident. “This isn’t about telling fabricators they need to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds to solve a problem,” says Sean. “The JBC2 tackles one specific operation and removes a manual, blade-based process at a relatively small cost.” There are production benefits too. Mechanising the operation can provide greater speed, efficiency and quality consistency in weld cleaning, reducing the reliance on individual operator technique and the potential for damaged frames and consequent remakes. But from a risk-management perspective, the more fundamental point is that the sharp hand tool is no longer central to the task.
DON’T WAIT FOR AN INCIDENT For fabricators reviewing their production processes, the JBC2 therefore raises an interesting question: not so much ‘how much does it cost?’ as ‘what is the cost of continuing to do the job in the same way?’. Health and safety is, after all, about managing risk before something goes wrong rather than reacting afterwards.

AFFORDABLE ELEPHANT GLASS LIFTING FROM FGS Flat Glass Solutions is bringing Italian handling expertise to UK glass processors with the introduction of two compact, flexible Elephant vacuum lifters – the VT2RP and the VT4RPBP. The VT2RP and VT4RPBP have been selected to meet common handling requirements, and forms part of a wider range of handling solutions that can transport sheet loads up to a tonne or more. The compact VT2RP offers a 200kg lifting capacity and pneumatic rotation, while the VT4RPBP handles loads of up to 400kg and incorporates both pneumatic rotation and tilting. Alessandro Mulazzani, technical sales manager for Elephant commented: “Whether you are shifting 200kg or 2 tonnes, the mechanics of our lifting solutions always incorporate the same priorities – quality, ease of use, and future proofed affordability. These two ‘entry level’ products are the perfect introduction to the UK glazing industry, demonstrating our understanding of heavy materials transportation within the context of a business as a whole.”
“These entry-level models make those benefits accessible to a much wider range of UK glass businesses.”
that has moved not just glass, but marble, wood and metal for more than 45 years. The VT2RP and VT4RPBP are particularly strategic products for glass companies who are struggling for space but want to incorporate a low cost solution to existing lines without the added expense and disruption of a complete upgrade.” David added: “Not every glass processor needs the largest or most highly automated handling system available. Many simply need a wellengineered, dependable solution that removes unnecessary manual effort and makes everyday glass movement safer and easier. “That is where these two Elephant models fit. The VT2RP provides a compact entry point for lighter applications, while the VT4RPBP offers greater capacity and the additional versatility of pneumatic rotation and tilt. They give processors two clearly defined options without making the investment unnecessarily
FGS Managing Director David Cahill added: “Working with Elephant over the years I have been impressed by the engineering and technology
“The VT2RP and VT4RPBP are particularly strategic products for glass companies who are struggling for space but want to incorporate a low cost solution to existing lines without the added expense and disruption of a complete upgrade.” www.glassnews.co.uk | September 2026
complicated. To give this some perspective, a sheet of 6mm thick glass measuring 3m x 2m weighs around 90 kg, so the VT4 series offers plenty of safety and scope.”
Both models are powered by compressed air and use a Venturi system to generate the vacuum. This makes them particularly relevant to glass processing and fabrication businesses that already have a suitable compressed-air supply and want to improve their handling capabilities without investing in an electrically powered vacuum system. The VT2RP is equipped with two 250mm-diameter suction cups and provides pneumatic rotation through 90°. Its compact configuration makes it suitable for processors looking for a straightforward lifting solution for smaller and lighter glass sheets. The VT4RPBP increases the maximum lifting capacity to 400kg and uses four 300mmdiameter suction cups. In addition to pneumatic rotation through 90°, it provides 90° pneumatic tilting, helping operators move glass between horizontal and vertical orientations more safely and with greater control. Safety is central to both designs. Depending on the selected specification, the lifters are available with a single or double vacuum safety circuit in accordance with UNI EN 13155. Safety provisions include an audible and visual alarm system, a vacuum reserve tank to help retain a secure grip, anti-fall valves and a vacuum gauge with a colour-coded scale. The machines also use vulcanisedrubber suction cups mounted on spring supports, helping them
establish a secure and consistent grip on the glass surface. David continued: “Manual glass handling presents an obvious risk to employees, but it can also place the product itself at risk. A dropped, damaged or scratched sheet is costly, particularly as glass sizes and values increase. “Introducing the right lifting equipment can reduce physical strain on operators, provide more controlled movement and help prevent avoidable product damage. These entry-level models make those benefits accessible to a much wider range of UK glass businesses.” Founded in Italy in 1979, Elephant designs and manufactures lifting and handling equipment for industrial applications. Its portfolio includes vacuum lifters, jib cranes, hoists and bespoke handling systems for glass, wood, stone and other manufacturing sectors. Elephant was recently acquired by the OMIS Group, one of the leading manufacturers of lifting and handling systems in the world. This gives Elephant, and FGS, access to handling solutions from the smallest single operations, right through to transportation of supersized installations to site. Flat Glass Solutions distributes Elephant’s glass-handling products in the UK and can advise processors on model selection, lifting capacity and the most appropriate movement and safety configuration for their application.

HAFFNER DELIVERS IMPRESSIVE MACHINERY SALES GROWTH
KOMBIMATEC FACILITATES FLEXIBLE CORNER CLEANING FOR LESS (SPACE AND MONEY) Kombimatec has introduced a competitively priced, programmable corner cleaning machine capable of processing up to 25 differently shaped PVC profiles, taking up a minimum footprint – perfect for factories where space is at a premium. The EV443/CNC is designed for fabricators working with a diverse range of profile systems who also need to make efficient use of factory space. Measuring just 86cm x 98cm, excluding its frame support table, the machine combines a remarkably small footprint with the flexibility to clean a wide range of window frames, sashes, doors, patios, vertical sliders and bifold joints. Rather than relying on a large selection of expensive, profile-specific tooling, the EV443/ CNC uses a 250mm TCT milling blade, controlled by a two-axis CNC electronic drive system, to clean the outside edge of the welded corner. This CNC technology is more commonly associated with considerably more expensive corner cleaning machinery. Spring-loaded 3mm groove knives track the profile surfaces, enabling the machine to groove both the top and bottom faces and mill the outside edge within a single operating cycle. Full twoaxis interpolation also allows decorative profile shapes to be accurately milled, delivering a consistently high-quality finish across a broad range of profile designs. Programs can be created directly through the machine’s colour touchscreen interface or prepared offline

on a computer using simple text files and then downloaded to the machine. The touchscreen also provides operational controls and diagnostics, while an ethernet ready version supports remote technical assistance. The ability to create and adjust programs without repeatedly investing in specially manufactured tooling not only helps to reduce operating costs but gives fabricators greater flexibility when introducing new profiles or refining the finish. Space is provided for an optional decorative milling blade designed to suit the fabricator’s chosen window system. Special knives are also available for processing woodgrain and foiled products, with the option to isolate the grooveknife stations to protect foiled surfaces. The main milling blade can likewise be isolated when groove-only operation is required. The cleaning cycle begins automatically when the frame joint is inserted, helping to keep production simple and efficient. A dedicated start sequence also enables the EV443/CNC to process small sashes down to an internal dimension of just 140mm.
Leading machinery innovators Haffner Ltd has reported impressive growth in machinery sales, with sales revenue increasing by 48% this year against a challenging market backdrop. The latest figures continue a strong growth trajectory, with machinery sales revenue now 66% higher than in 2024. Haffner has also maintained its margins, underlining the strength of the company’s performance. Matt Thomas, Managing Director of Haffner, said: “The market remains challenging, which makes a 48% increase in machinery sales revenue this year particularly significant. With sales revenue now 66% higher than in 2024, it demonstrates that fabricators are continuing to invest where they can see a clear and measurable return.” “What is particularly important to us is the quality of that growth. These figures are based purely on new machinery sales across our Haffner, Graf Synergy and Fom Industrie ranges and exclude our service and spare parts revenue. We have also maintained our margins, which further demonstrates the strength of our performance.” Haffner attributes its continued growth to the strength of its machinery portfolio and fabricators’ increasing focus on automation, productivity and manufacturing efficiencies. Representing Haffner, Graf Synergy and Fom Industrie machinery, the company offers a
comprehensive portfolio for PVC-U and aluminium fabrication. Matt continued: “Investment decisions are understandably being scrutinised carefully, but fabricators recognise that the right machinery can deliver significant commercial benefits. Whether that is reducing labour dependency, increasing output, improving finish quality or creating additional manufacturing capacity, there remains a strong appetite to invest where the business case is clear.” “Having Haffner, Graf Synergy and Fom Industrie within our portfolio means we can offer solutions across virtually every area of PVC-U and aluminium fabrication and identify the machinery that will deliver the greatest value for each operation.” Haffner is a multi-awardwinning supplier of PVC-U and aluminium fabrication machinery and is widely recognised as the home of automation for the fenestration industry. Its portfolio spans individual machines through to sophisticated automated fabrication machining centres, backed by in-house technical expertise, training and aftersales support. Matt concluded: “We are extremely encouraged by the growth we are seeing. We will continue investing in our machinery portfolio, our people and our infrastructure to ensure Haffner remains at the forefront of fabrication machinery.” Tel: 01785 222421 www.haffnerltd.com

the Sparklike Laser Portable has helped us underpin that commitment. “We have a longstanding relationship with Inagas, having worked with them over the years to satisfy our offline gas filling requirements, so we were confident that they were best equipped to support us in our need for technology to measure the gas concentration within our units. In many manufacturing facilities, laser systems are considered precise, reliable, and cost-effective. But as with any technical equipment, practical experience with this technology reveals unplanned downtime, quality fluctuations, and opaque downtime—factors that often significantly drive up actual production costs. This becomes particularly critical in in-house manufacturing, where every interruption has a direct impact on unit costs.
• increased rework and quality issues • inefficient use of personnel • loss of on-time delivery reliability

DOWNTIME COSTS IN LASER MANUFACTURING:
The direct costs of a laser failure are relatively easy to quantify: machine downtime, production delays, and, in some cases, scrap. The indirect consequences, however, are far more significant:

very apparent that as things evolve, the level of detail that goes into manufacturing each of their units remains the same. It’s been an exciting year for Regency and we at Inagas look forward to seeing them build on their successes long into the future.”
These factors mean that calculated unit costs often deviate significantly from actual costs. Especially during periods of high capacity utilization or mass production, even brief interruptions add up to a significant economic risk. In many companies, maintenance is still based on two fundamental principles:
reactive repairs in the event of a breakdown or rigid maintenance intervals. However, both approaches fall short: • Reactive maintenance is only implemented after costs have already been incurred • Time-based maintenance does not take the actual condition of the equipment into account • Root cause analyses often remain superficial and symptom-oriented The result: recurring failure patterns, inefficient service calls, and a lack of transparency regarding the actual weak points in the process. While the market has traditionally focused on machine performance and acquisition costs, practice reveals another decisive success factor: the quality of maintenance and process management.

FORCE 8 CRAFTS BESPOKE OVERHEATING IN HOMES: ASTRAGAL BAR DESIGN REHAU SAYS WINDOWS CAN NO
Force 8 has once again demonstrated its specialist manufacturing capabilities with the completion of an intricate bespoke astragal bar design, showcasing the craftsmanship and technical expertise that continues to set the company apart within the industry.
The project, completed for a customer requiring a highly detailed heritage-style appearance, involved the handcrafting of an elaborate astragal bar layout. Unlike conventional decorative glazing systems where bars are encapsulated between the panes of a sealed unit, Force 8 manufactured the bars to be applied directly onto the surface of the glass, delivering a far more authentic and traditional finish. Every element of the design was individually crafted by one of Force 8's experienced craftsmen, ensuring each curved section and joint aligned perfectly to create a seamless appearance. While decorative glazing has become increasingly popular in recent years, reproducing the character of traditional timber windows remains a challenge for many fabricators. Surfacemounted astragal bars create genuine depth and shadow lines that simply cannot be achieved with bars enclosed within the glazing unit, making them the preferred choice for period properties, heritage renovations and premium residential projects.
LONGER BE AN AFTERTHOUGHT
“The result is a glazing solution that combines the authentic appearance of traditional joinery with the thermal efficiency and low maintenance benefits of modern PVC-U windows.” The expertise behind this latest installation has been developed over many years and stems directly from Force 8's pioneering work on its Georgian fanlight system. During the development of that product, the company designed its own manufacturing process for accurately positioning astragal bars onto the face of the glass while maintaining exceptional durability and long-term performance. The result is a glazing solution that combines the authentic appearance of traditional joinery with the thermal efficiency and low maintenance benefits of modern PVC-U windows. Because every project is manufactured in-house, Force 8 can produce virtually any astragal bar configuration, including complex arches, Gothic designs, decorative fanlights and fully bespoke layouts that many fabricators simply cannot offer. This latest project demonstrates not only the skill of the company's manufacturing team but also its willingness to take on technically demanding work that falls outside standard fabrication methods. Each design is carefully planned before being individually handcrafted to ensure the finished product meets both the aesthetic expectations of the customer and the

exacting standards required for installation. For installers, this provides the confidence of working with a manufacturer capable of delivering truly bespoke solutions without compromising on quality or attention to detail. As demand continues to grow for heritage-inspired products that combine traditional aesthetics with modern performance, Force 8 continues to invest in the specialist skills and manufacturing techniques needed to deliver projects that others often consider too complex. Whether producing bespoke arched frames, composite entrance doors or intricate surfacemounted astragal bar designs such as this, Force 8 continues to prove why it remains one of the UK's leading specialists in technically challenging fenestration projects. As England and Wales endure red extreme heat warnings this June and July, REHAU is urging housebuilders, developers, and specifiers to rethink the role of the window in keeping homes cool. The window solutions specialist argues that overheating, energy efficiency, and natural light have become competing design problems on the modern home, and that meeting all three within a single product is now one of the most important decisions in any build. REHAU’s message is that these demands are best solved by working with the system manufacturer and fabricator from the outset, rather than treating the window as an off-the-shelf product. Mark Gajda, Head of Technical Services & Certification Manager at REHAU, said: "This is where the challenge really lies. A window as designed needs to do multiple jobs at once, which often seem to be in direct competition. Approved Document L wants to keep heat in, whereas Approved Document O wants to limit excess heat build-up by means of ensuring ability to release any excess heat. At the same time, homeowners and designers rightly want plenty of natural light, which usually means more glazing, not less, all to be achieved whilst specifying within the requirements of the appropriate Approved Documents. Balancing all of that within window designs is a real technical challenge." The warning comes as recently published English Housing Survey (EHS) figures show that throughout 2024, approximately three million homes were reported as overheating, making up 13% of owner-occupied dwellings and 11% of both private and social rented dwellings. This marks a rise of 5% of total occupied dwellings in the last five years, from 7% in 2019 to 12% in 2024.1 Since June 2022, Approved Document O of the Building Regulations has required new
residential buildings in England to limit unwanted solar gain and provide adequate means of removing excess heat, sitting alongside Approved Document L, with guidance on energy efficiency including glazed elements. Together, the two place demands on the modern home that can appear to pull in opposite directions. For REHAU, the answer lies in considering these factors together rather than in isolation. Larger areas of glazing bring in the daylight that makes a home feel spacious and supports wellbeing but can also increase solar gain. Sealing a building tightly for improved energy efficiency raises thermal performance, yet without adequate ventilation, it can often trap heat. At the King Street West project in Stockport, a £14.5 million contract for 73 apartments, REHAU’s technical team was consulted to address the results of an overheating report. The report revealed the need for multiple different windows within a single apartment to balance solar gain and heat loss. This challenge highlights the importance of consulting system providers early in the design phase. "When working with the system designer and fabricator at specification stage, you can address all of these requirements within one product, rather than adding in compromises later," Mark continued. “The point is that these are not separate problems to be traded off against one another. Working together at design stage means the window system can be curated for a specific location, project, building orientation or site requirements, ensuring compliance to the correct Building Regulation in terms of both solar and thermal target values together with other onsite requirements such as safety, excess noise levels and ventilation.” As the climate continues to shift, REHAU believes that this integrated approach will become the norm rather than the exception, and that getting windows right means starting the conversation with the people who make them. https://window.rehau.com/uk-en 1 English Housing Survey 2024 to 2025: weather resilient homes - fact sheet - GOV.UK

A&B GLASS OPENS THE DOOR TO RETAIL GROWTH WITH GERDA Suffolk-based A&B Glass was so impressed by the Gerda steel and aluminium range of entrance doors that it made the product a focal point of its newly opened retail showroom in Felixstowe. The new premises have already generated an unexpectedly high number of sales enquiries – both for Gerda doors, and the company’s wider range of PVC-U and aluminium windows, doors and home improvement products. Its early success underlines the continuing importance of giving retail customers a tangible, personal experience when investing in premium products for their home. A&B Glass director Steve Stone commented: “Technology is transforming the way we work, but it hasn’t changed what our customers value most – personal service. That understanding is instilled across our workforce and shapes the way we deal with every customer.
“The showroom gives people the opportunity to visit us, see and feel the products, ask questions face-to-face and receive straightforward advice from an open and friendly team. “The Gerda door is particularly well suited to this environment. We’ve long recognised the importance of the ‘Thunk’ – that reassuring sound and solid feeling when a well-engineered door closes. Gerda delivers it exceptionally well. When customers operate the door for themselves, they immediately understand that this is something different.” A&B Glass first encountered Gerda at the FIT Show. Having already established a working relationship with Gerda door distributor Pioneer Trading Company, it was an easy and natural step when the company began looking for a contemporary entrance door to complement its aluminium window and door offering. “The Gerda range has enabled us to introduce a much more contemporary proposition to sit alongside our aluminium window system,” continued Steve. “It won’t necessarily be the right door for every homeowner, but it has certainly opened
more doors for our sales team and sparked a great deal of interest. “It is an exceptionally well-engineered product in terms of its design, construction and security. Most importantly, when you close it, it gives you that instinctive feeling that you and your home are safe. You can describe that in a brochure or show it in a video but experiencing it in person is far more powerful.” The decision to establish the showroom in Felixstowe was driven by a combination of commercial opportunity and the company’s longstanding connection with the area. “Felixstowe just felt right,” explained Steve. “It is a vibrant seaside town with a great deal of history, and our family has long-term connections here. The site is only minutes from both the seafront and the high street, so it is ideally placed to serve the local community. “The building had stood empty for a long time because it required extensive work, but that actually appealed to us. It gave us a blank canvas and the opportunity to create the showroom we really wanted. “With the support of our suppliers, skilled builders and surveyors, and our own exceptional fitting teams, we feel we have achieved that. The feedback from the local community has been incredibly rewarding.” The showroom displays products from across the A&B Glass portfolio, allowing homeowners to compare styles, materials, colours and operating features before making a decision. Gerda provides a striking focal point and has already helped the company secure its first installations from the new location. Despite challenging conditions across the wider home improvement market, the number of enquiries generated by the Felixstowe showroom has exceeded the company’s initial expectations. “The market remains tough, so you have to give customers a compelling reason to choose you,” said Steve. “Our sales team takes a caring, hands-on approach, supported by excellent communication, strong industry knowledge and close attention to detail. That is helping us turn enquiries into orders, and we are very excited about what lies ahead. “When somebody is making a major investment in their home, they often want more than an online configurator. They want to touch the product, operate it, ask questions and hear an expert opinion from a friendly person they can trust. Our Felixstowe showroom provides exactly that.”

“Our sales team takes a caring, hands-on approach, supported by excellent communication, strong industry knowledge and close attention to detail. That is helping us turn enquiries into orders, and we are very excited about what lies ahead.” A&B Glass Home Improvements is the dedicated retail division of A&B Glass Company Ltd. The business has operated in Suffolk for more than 40 years and manufactures its PVC-U windows and aluminium and doors at its Sudbury facility. Its experienced fitting teams are directly employed by the company, helping it maintain control over the customer experience from initial consultation through to installation and aftersales support. Steve concluded: “Our relationship with the Gerda team has been a pleasure. We are two highly motivated companies offering first-class products and sharing a genuine commitment to exceptional customer service. “That gives us a very strong foundation for continued growth. Ultimately, our philosophy is simple: we just want to do the right thing, always.” Danny Williams, managing director of Gerda distributor Pioneer Trading Company added: “From the start we have advocated for installation companies to invest in showrooms – and A&B’s experience after a few short weeks, is indicative of the need for that hands-on, personal approach to selling windows and doors. A premium entrance door needs to be experienced. The engineering, weight, finish, security and, of course, the unmistakable ‘Thunk’ all become much more meaningful when a homeowner can see and operate the door for themselves. “A&B Glass has created a fantastic showroom that combines excellent products with knowledgeable, personal service. The early response proves that, even in an increasingly digital marketplace, a highquality showroom can still be an extremely powerful sales tool.” For more information about A&B Glass Home Improvements, visit www.abglasshomeimprovements.co.uk.

SPECIALISATION OVER DIVERSIFICATION: WHY FOCUS STILL WINS IN DOOR MANUFACTURING The potential gains of new product territory are hard for some specialist manufacturers to ignore, but Hurst remains fully committed to what it does best, with countless benefits for its installer network. We report. For many businesses operating in a challenging and competitive market, diversification is often the key to success, but Hurst has taken a ‘less is more’ approach. Concentrating on two core product types, comprising composite doors and PVC-U panels, it’s a specialist strategy that prioritises quality over quantity. “Diversification can be a smart move under the right circumstances, but at Hurst, we’ve resisted the temptation to spread ourselves too thin,” says Kevin Wheatman, Director & General Manager at Hurst.
two separate factories, dedicated to each. The result is optimised production and consistent quality and performance that would be difficult to achieve with more product categories thrown into the mix. “Composites and panels are made with different materials, different machinery and require different expertise,” explains Kevin. “Keeping those production lines distinct allows us to give each product category the attention it deserves, achieving the best possible results for our customers.” It’s a simple separation that allows the business to continually improve processes and strengthen its reputation for delivering what customers expect, when they expect it. Allowing Hurst to monitor performance more easily, make adjustments and maintain capacity without unnecessary disruption, it also helps the business respond quickly when demand fluctuates, supporting lead-time stability.

Four CNCs, for example, allow Hurst to increase capacity but also enable production to continue in the event of a breakdown, assuring customers of a reliable service.
Hurst’s targeted focus on just two product categories has also allowed it to hone the manufacturing expertise necessary to evolve its ranges – seamlessly introducing solid core composites and the Securicore™ panel – without overcomplicating production.
“Our tight focus on composites and panels means we’ve been able to invest in more equipment for each, and that’s allowed us the breathing space to develop a support and continuity strategy across both factories,” explains Kevin.
“Our policy is to do what we do best, and do it well, rather than stretching our resources and diluting our strengths and our focus.”
“We understand our manufacturing processes inside out, which means we can introduce improvements or additions to our composite and panel ranges more smoothly, without major disruption,” says Kevin.

For installers, the benefits of Hurst’s focused approach are numerous: dependable products, consistent quality and a supply chain they can rely on.
“We’re not a jack-of-all-trades, but we are a master of two!” says Kevin. “Our mantra of specialisation over diversification means our customers know that what they order will turn up when it should – and perform as expected. “When it comes to composite doors and panels, we know our stuff – and our customers can rest assured that they will receive quality, innovative products, manufactured to a consistently high standard and backed by comprehensive support. “Sticking to what we know means we’re extremely confident in what we do here .” For more information, visit www.hurstdoors.co.uk, email info@hurstdoors.co.uk, or call 01482 790790.

DOORS AND VENTILATION When replacing doors (just like windows) compliance with Building Regulations is critical for fabricators and installers to achieve the ventilation standards set out in Approve Document F (means of ventilation), which was updated and legally enacted in June 2022. To improve the air quality, thermal comfort and wellbeing of homeowners, most doors should include trickle vents (on the doors or frames) in particular where the door opens into a habitable space and especially when the door is the only opening in a room which has no windows. Other situations where trickle vents are advised for doors is when there are few windows or small windows in a habitable room. No matter which situation, installing trickle vents on doors and windows is the most practical, viable and economical ventilation solution to meet the regulatory requirements. Over the last decade, Glazpart’s Link Vent has become the trickle vent of choice for window and door companies. To ensure compliance with Building Regulations, the Link Vent range sizes include 5000, 4000 and 2500 EQA and it can be fitted to UPVC, aluminium and timber doors/frames. The clever design of the Link Vent makes it simple to install and user friendly for both opening and closing - the innovative closing action allows the closure plate to be positioned so that it reduces draughts by directing air away from occupants.
64
internal vent and louvered grille clip in to easily sit between the open concertinaed door leaves. The Bi-Fold Vent is designed for compliance to the building regulations with the independently tested equivalent area, it sits in a 16mm rout and in many cases, can be located directly into the door leaf or frame, removing the need for expensive additional “knock on” or extended profiles. With a 2700 EQA (per vent), a 3-panel door meets the requirements for background ventilation.
Dean Bradley, Glazpart Sales Director
The tried and tested clip design sits perfectly in the low-profile chassis allowing the split closure plates to direct the air away from occupants. Smart design, easy fitting, and functionality are fundamental features but it is the huge choice of colours and decorative finishes that sets Glazpart apart from the competition. The Link Vent is perfect for doors as the colours and woodgrains can be perfectly matched to blend in perfectly with the door’s overall design and look. The colours/finishes are extremely stable and resistant to UV, meaning the vents hold their colour in extreme weather conditions and constant exposure to the elements of weather, without noticeable fading. Glazpart’s Link Vent premium finish ranges are also available in handy packs of either 10 canopies or internal vents, enabling companies only buy the stock they need and add more value, both in terms of revenue and kerb appeal for homeowners. In 2025, Glazpart launched the innovative Bi-Fold Vent – a trickle vent specifically manufactured for aluminium bi-fold doors. This shallow height (slim) vent is designed to work within the low hinge stack heights when the doors in a bi-fold system are in the open position – it has unique lowprofile louvred canopy design combined with a low profile vent to allow both the
The internal closure plates of the Bi-Fold Door Vent clip onto a uniquely designed low prolife chassis which in turn clips within the aluminium profile, so you only have the height of the lids protruding above the profile. The chassis can be supplied in either white or black dependant on the colour of the patented closure plates with their innovative vertical closure plates. The external section has a new louvered design, to give the minimum amount of protrusion from the face of the profile. The louvred flyscreen sits beneath the reveal giving additional protection from the elements. Moulded from high quality virgin ASA, Bi-Fold Vents are highly temperature and colour stable when compared to UPVC. Initially available in White, Black and Anthracite Grey in standard sets, bespoke and matching colours can also be manufactured (dependent on demand). The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
WHEN TIMES GET TOUGH, DON’T GO QUIET
WHY MARKETING MATTERS MORE WHEN THE MARKET BECOMES CHALLENGING When business is booming, marketing can feel easy. Order books are healthy, enquiries are coming in and customers are spending. Businesses have confidence, marketing budgets are easier to justify and everyone wants to talk about growth. It is when things become more difficult that the real decisions have to be made. When margins are squeezed, customers become cautious and the economic outlook is uncertain, there is an understandable temptation to look down the list of expenditure and ask: What can we cut? Too often, marketing is one of the first things to go. I have spent many years working in publishing, advertising and marketing, and if there is one thing experience has taught me, it is this: when the market gets quieter, your marketing should not. In fact, I would argue that this is precisely when businesses need to communicate more effectively.
IF YOU DISAPPEAR, SOMEONE ELSE FILLS THE SPACE There is a difference between reducing unnecessary expenditure and becoming invisible. Your customers haven't disappeared simply because market conditions are difficult. They may be buying less frequently. Decisions may take longer. They may scrutinise expenditure more carefully. But they are still researching products, reading industry news, comparing suppliers, looking for expertise and deciding which businesses they trust. And when they are ready to spend, who are they going to remember? The company that has continued talking to them, or the one they haven't heard from for six months? Marketing is not simply about generating an immediate sale. It is about visibility, credibility, familiarity and trust. Those things are built over time. This is particularly important in the specialist markets in which our publications operate. Glass News, for example, has been serving the glass and glazing industry since 2011 and has established a highly
68
contractors, fire door inspectors rather than manufacturers, or homeowners rather than the trade. Perhaps there isn't even a specific product to promote. You simply recognise that competitors are becoming more visible and your brand needs to be part of the conversation. Those objectives require different solutions. That's why I increasingly believe in the complete marketing mix.
Christina Lazenby, Managing Director Glass People Ltd defined trade audience. Fire Door Journal addresses a specialist professional audience interested in fire door safety, performance, competence and compliance. Improve takes businesses directly to the homeowner, while Fenestra Build provides another route into the wider construction and building sector. Four titles. Four different audiences. And, importantly, multiple ways for a business to communicate with those audiences.
MARKETING ISN'T JUST AN ADVERT One of the biggest changes I have seen during my career is the number of routes now available to marketers. Years ago, the conversation was predominantly about the size of the advert, which issue it was appearing in and how many insertions a client wanted. Print remains hugely important to us and I remain a great believer in it, but today it is only one element of what we can offer. Our clients can combine print advertising, digital editions, websites, dedicated email broadcasts, regular newsletters, sponsored content, feature articles, interviews, Q&As, technical commentary, case studies, product news and social media. That means we don't have to say to a customer, “Here's an advertising page – would you like to buy it?” We can start with a much more useful question: What are you trying to achieve? Perhaps you are launching a product and need to explain why it is different. Perhaps you've invested heavily in new machinery and need customers to understand the additional capabilities it gives you. Maybe you're entering a new market. You might need to reach installers rather than fabricators, architects rather than
EDITORIAL HAS AN IMPORTANT ROLE Good editorial and good marketing can complement one another without compromising editorial independence. A full-page advert can create impact. But alongside that advert, an informed feature article can demonstrate expertise. A case study can show how a product has performed in a real-world application. An interview can introduce the people behind a business. A technical article can help a reader understand an issue. An email broadcast can put a particular message directly in front of the target audience. And the website gives that content longevity. Glass News, for example, doesn't simply cover company announcements and products; its current online coverage spans machinery, doors, software, people, marketing and broader trade developments. Fire Door Journal similarly carries content covering compliance, competence, inspection records, training, products and wider fire-door safety issues. That gives companies an opportunity to contribute knowledge, not simply advertising messages. There is, of course, an important distinction. Our editors cannot endorse a client's product simply because that company advertises with us. Editorial credibility matters enormously, particularly in technical and safety-critical industries. But if a company possesses genuine expertise, has something interesting to say or can help readers better understand an important issue, we want to hear from them. Advertising tells people you're there. Good editorial can help them understand why they should listen to you. The strongest campaigns often use both.
DIFFERENT TITLES, DIFFERENT ROUTES TO MARKET One of the great strengths of our publishing portfolio is that our titles don't all speak to exactly the same audience.
Glass News provides a direct route into the UK glass, glazing and fenestration industry. It reaches the manufacturers, systems companies, fabricators, installers, machinery suppliers, hardware businesses and specialists that make up the sector. The title has been established for 15 years, building relationships throughout the industry during that time. Its print and digital presence means advertisers aren't dependent on a single channel. Fire Door Journal provides a much more specialised environment. It brings together fire door manufacturers, installers, inspectors, maintenance businesses, responsible persons, social housing, fire and safety professionals and others working around fire door safety and compliance. Its offering includes print and digital editions, a monthly newsletter and technical and expert-led content. For businesses operating within passive fire protection and building safety, that degree of specialisation is valuable. You aren't paying to reach everybody. You're communicating within a community where your subject matter is already relevant. Improve Magazine does something different again. Improve takes the conversation from B2B to B2C, putting home-improvement businesses and brands in front of homeowners. Its remit encompasses windows and doors but extends into interiors, extensions, garden rooms, roofing, blinds, shutters and other areas of home improvement. Its existing proposition combines magazine content with email and social reach, giving advertisers multiple consumer touchpoints. And Fenestra Build broadens the picture further into construction and the built environment. For some companies, only one of those audiences will be relevant. For others, there is a natural crossover. A glazing manufacturer, for example, may want to talk technically to the trade through Glass News while communicating the benefits of its products to homeowners through Improve. A fire-rated glass or hardware manufacturer might have a natural place in both Glass News and Fire Door Journal. A business wanting to influence the construction market may see opportunities across Glass News, Fire Door Journal and Fenestra Build. That is where having a portfolio becomes particularly useful. We can look at where your customers actually are and build the route to market accordingly.

MARKETING
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
DON'T CONFUSE MARKETING WITH SELLING
and then promoted directly to readers through email.
This is especially important when conditions are tough.
One story suddenly has several lives.
Not every piece of marketing has to say BUY NOW. In a cautious market, continually pushing products can become counterproductive. Sometimes the better approach is to educate. Answer a question your customers are asking. Explain a regulatory change. Share some research. Discuss a problem affecting the industry. Show how one of your customers overcame a challenge. Give your technical team a voice. Take readers inside your factory. Talk about your investment and what it means for customers. Discuss where you believe the market is going. These things establish authority and familiarity. Then, when the customer reaches the point where they need the product or service you provide, your company is already in their mind.
DIGITAL GIVES US IMMEDIACY Print provides presence, credibility and longevity. Digital provides speed, frequency and measurability. They should not be seen as competitors. A magazine or newspaper advertisement can be reinforced by an email campaign. An article in the publication can be hosted online and shared socially. A product launch can appear in print, be expanded online
www.glassnews.co.uk | September 2026
This matters when marketing budgets are under pressure because businesses quite rightly want more from the content and creative work they are paying for.
"Tell us what you're launching, where you're exhibiting, which markets you're targeting and what you need customers to understand." That is where working closely with a publisher can be valuable.
WE ARE HERE TO HELP Between Glass News, Fire Door Journal, Improve Magazine and Fenestra Build, we have established platforms serving clearly defined audiences across fenestration, fire safety, home improvement and construction.
If you have invested time and money producing a strong case study, technical article, photography or video, why use it once?
Rather than buying isolated pieces of space, talk to us about your marketing calendar. Tell us what you're launching, where you're exhibiting, which markets you're targeting and what you need customers to understand.
A coordinated campaign allows the same central message to be adapted across several platforms and delivered to the audience in different ways.
We can then look at our editorial features, publications, websites, newsletters and email opportunities and help build something around those objectives.
It's access to different markets through a complete mix of print, digital, editorial, email, online and social communication.
CONSISTENCY BEATS THE OCCASIONAL SPLASH
TOUGH MARKETS CREATE OPPORTUNITIES
If you've got £750 to spend, tell us what you need that £750 to achieve.
When everyone is busy, everyone is visible.
Another lesson I've learned is that effective marketing rarely comes from appearing once, disappearing for six months and then returning with another advert.
If you have a £10,000 annual budget, let's sit down and plan how to make that budget work throughout the year.
That creates space.
That is a much more complete approach to marketing.
Customers are busy. They may not need your product the month your advert appears. They may not even notice it the first time. Consistency builds recognition. That doesn't mean running exactly the same advert every month. In fact, I would encourage clients not to. Tell a story throughout the year. January might be about a new product. March could introduce a customer case study. May might feature technical expertise. In July you could discuss an investment. September might focus on an industry issue. November could look ahead to the following year. The brand remains visible, but the reader is continually given a new reason to pay attention.
When the market tightens, some companies inevitably retreat. Share of voice becomes easier to win because there are fewer businesses competing for attention. A company that continues to communicate confidently can appear stronger and more established simply because it remains present while others become quiet. I'm not suggesting businesses should spend recklessly. Quite the opposite. Marketing in a challenging economy needs to be smarter.
But what we really offer isn't simply four publications.
And we're happy to be creative.
If you aren't sure what you need, talk to us. I would much rather understand a client's objectives and recommend the right combination than sell them something simply because we happen to have a page available. Because ultimately our success is tied to the success of the companies that work with us. The market will have good years and difficult years. Businesses will face uncertainty, new competitors, changing legislation, changing technology and changing customer behaviour.
Know who you want to reach. Decide what you want to tell them. Choose the channels that genuinely reach that audience. Use your content more than once. Combine editorial credibility with commercial visibility. Measure digital activity where possible. And maintain enough consistency for people to remember you.
But one principle remains remarkably consistent:
Most importantly, work with media partners who understand your market.
Christina Lazenby Email: christina@glassnews.co.uk
If you want customers to remember your business when they're ready to buy, you have to give them reasons to remember you. When things get tough, don't disappear. Stay relevant. Stay useful. Stay visible.

SENIOR CONFIRMS NEW LEADERSHIP APPOINTMENTS TO SUPPORT NEXT PHASE OF GROWTH Senior Architectural Systems, one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of aluminium fenestration solutions, has confirmed two key leadership appointments. The company has welcomed Sonny Burrows as managing director designate and Jeremy Davies as technical director, strengthening both the company’s strategic direction and technical capability while maintaining the stability and continuity that customers expect. Sonny Burrows joins Senior with more than 20 years of leadership experience across the manufacturing and construction sectors. Over the coming months, he will work alongside managing director Mark Wadsworth during a transition period, getting to know the business, its people, customers and partners, while building on the values and culture that underpin Senior’s success.
Senior’s new technical director, Jeremy Davies, brings more than 30 years of experience in the fenestration, façade and aluminium systems industry. In his new role, he will lead Senior’s wider technical team as the company continues to develop advanced aluminium systems for the UK construction and façade sectors, supporting its ongoing commitment to new product innovation, quality and customer service. The updated leadership structure builds on what’s already in place at Senior, which this year is marking its 35th anniversary, and supports the steady, sustainable growth of being part of the wider ASSA ABLOY group. Commenting on the new senior leadership structure, Senior’s managing director Mark Wadsworth said: “Sonny and Jeremy are joining us at a really positive time for the business. What matters most is that our
customers continue to get the stability, reliability and technical support they expect from Senior, and these appointments are helping us deliver on that promise. They both bring a huge amount of experience and a fresh perspective, and I’m looking forward to working with them as we continue our journey.” Established in 1991 and acquired by ASSA ABLOY in March 2025, Senior Architectural System is one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of aluminium windows, doors and curtain wall systems. The company remains committed to responsible manufacturing, with a portfolio of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) which promote greater transparency now available for its major systems, and ongoing investment in sustainable product development, including its patented PURe® aluminium window and door range.

SIMON DORNEY APPOINTMENT SUPPORTS NEXT PHASE OF GROWTH AT DEKKO Leading trade fabricator Dekko Window Systems has strengthened its commercial team with the appointment of highly experienced Simon Dorney as Business Development Manager. Simon, who got into the industry in 1990 after leaving the Forces, joined the business three months ago and brings more than 35 years of fenestration industry experience to the role, having held senior sales positions with some of the sector’s best-known names including Exlabesa, Reynaers, VEKA and Hurst Plastics. Having built an extensive network of contacts throughout his career, Simon says he was attracted to Dekko’s reputation. “I’ve known of Dekko for many years and had always heard positive feedback,” he said. “A lot of people I know in the industry said it’s a good firm to join and I couldn’t have asked for more since I got here. It’s a breath of fresh air to work for a company where everyone is pulling in the same direction.” In his new role, Simon will focus on finding new business opportunities and supporting Dekko’s continued growth plans. “There’s no hiding from the fact the market is tough at the moment, but there are always opportunities if you look hard enough. If you do the job correctly, you’re a reliable supplier and you provide a good product at a realistic price, there will always be opportunities. “It’s a cliché but if you look after your customers and give them what they need, then you will retain business and gain new business. And that’s what stands Dekko in such good stead.” Dekko Managing Director Kurt Greatrex said: “Simon brings decades of experience and we’re delighted to have him on board. “Investing in talented people like Simon demonstrates our confidence in the future and the opportunities ahead, and his industry knowledge and understanding will play an important role as we continue to grow.”
192,316 STEPS, FOUR HOURS’ SLEEP A NIGHT AND ONE UNFORGETTABLE WEEK Jack Aluminium Systems' Marketing Manager, Katie Bregazzi, has completed her third year volunteering at Derby Kids' Camp, a Derbyshire children's charity that gives more than 300 children aged seven to ten a free residential holiday each summer. Supported by hundreds of volunteers over the six-week school break, the camp provides children that need it the break they deserve and the chance to build confidence, make friends and create lifelong memories. Katie spent seven days and nights at camp alongside around 40 fellow volunteers, supporting a group of 60 children through a packed programme of outdoor activities, games and adventures. "It's the most rewarding week of my year," said Katie. "It's exhausting, chaotic and emotional in equal measure, but seeing the confidence the children build and the friendships they make makes every step worthwhile." This year, Katie is also helping to raise awareness
of Derby Kids' Camp's Feed the Fun campaign, which aims to close the charity's food funding gap. Across the summer, volunteers will serve more than 9,000 home-cooked meals, yet it costs just £6.80 to feed one child for an entire day. "That figure really stayed with me," Katie added. "For less than the price of a coffee and a sandwich, you can make sure a child is fed for a whole day while they're making memories they'll carry with them for years. Every donation, no matter how small, genuinely makes a difference." Swapping her camp hoodie for a Jack Aluminium polo shirt, Katie is now preparing to join colleagues at the upcoming Police Scotland Secured by Design Products Day, where the team will showcase Jack Aluminium's STS202 BR2 TD68 commercial door system. Katie said: "It's been quite a turnaround, swapping a zipped tent door for our STS202 BR2 commercial door in the space of a week—but I wouldn't have it any other way."
