We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the wonderful volunteers who have worked so hard to make this evening a success and to fulfill our mission: To mobilize the Canadian insurance industry in the fight against cancer by focusing on cancer research, support and education. A special thank you to Gala Co-Chairs, Sandy MacSpadyen and Michael Butler who have led an outstanding Gala committee to produce tonight! We’re very proud of the accomplishments of the Ontario Chapter of WICC over the past year. You will remember at the 2014 Gala we had been honored by Canadian Cancer Society with The Revenue Generation Impact Award recognizing the significant fund-raising WICC has achieved for cancer research. Since the inception of WICC in 1996, the Canadian property and casualty insurance industry has raised over $11,000,000 across the country for cancer research. This incredible accomplishment is due to your generous support of our WICC Chapter events like tonight, participating in our National Sponsorship program, and making WICC your charity of choice. We should all be very proud of this amazing level of funds raised. We know it will inspire you to continue to make WICC a priority for your organizations and staff. Each of us involved with WICC should also be pleased and proud that in nearly twenty years, and $11,000,000 raised, we have stayed true to the mission that 100% of the funds donated through WICC Ontario go directly towards cancer research. We are particularly proud of the National Sponsor Program and our two new sponsors BELFOR Restoration Services and Zurich Insurance Company. They join a roster of companies making the generous annual commitment of sponsorship dollars that are critical to our foundational programs across Canada. We recognized them in February at our inaugural thank you luncheon where they learned from CCS and WICC Board members how crucial their support is to cancer research. This evening the WICC Ontario Board invites you to celebrate our version of a Prohibition Party with Let’s Misbehave, a celebration of the by-gone era of the 1920’s and 1930’s. We are delighted to be able to give back to WICC volunteers, sponsors and contributors an evening full of music and entertainment that will be pure fun. Be sure to participate in our always successful auction! So many wonderful items on which to bid and all money raised gong to cancer research – so bid high and bid often! The evening also allows us to pay special tribute to the best of our volunteers and donors with awards recognizing companies and individuals that have been truly heroic in their commitment to WICC. Nominations for these awards are many and each year it is a hard job choosing the recipients among such strong contributors. This year, like the past, we acknowledge the service of dedicated individuals and companies that believe in WICC and believe that charity and community service are hallmarks of our industry. In closing, we hope tonight is a record year for the WICC Ontario Gala. We count on you for your generosity in our mutual goal to cure cancer in our lifetime. We encourage you to engage your staff in the many ways you can fundraise with WICC, support payroll deduction programs or consider National Sponsorship. WICC Tributes
Established at the 2008 Dinner, the WICC Tribute Recognition initiative is a tangible and meaningful way to honour friends, colleagues and family members who have had cancer. It’s a way for you to unite behind the passing memory or living courage of one person who has touched your life – and raise money in that person’s name. The seven WICC Tributes currently established have raised over $115,000. Leona Charbonneau Tribute started 2008. Many people will remember Leona Charbonneau from CGI Canada. Leona, along with her close friend and colleague, Rick Jackson, were bestowed WICC’s Gold Flame award in 2005. Their WICC fundraising began after Leona fought and overcame an abdominal cancer at the age of 27. In 2002, they discovered a tumour on her spine which made her unable to walk. With her strong determination, she learned how to walk again and the cancer went into remission. In 2006 the cancer came back into her adrenal glands which was inoperable. Ever determined, this cancer went into remission after 3 rounds of treatment. Leona’s zest for life, energy and determination helped her through a second set of treatments and she overcame that as well. Her friends had hope. Unfortunately early in 2008, she was diagnosed with leukemia and Leona passed away in July, 2008. To date, Leona’s Tribute has raised over $4,335. Cristina DeVargas Hub International HKMB Tribute In Memory of Cristina DeVargas It was with great sadness this past September that we lost our colleague and friend, Cristina DeVargas. For all of us who had the pleasure of working with Cristina, we each have our own cherished and fond memories of her genuine warmth and wit, and in her final months, the remarkable grace and dignity with which she faced her rapidly declining health. Cristina resolved to make the most of the time she had, taking the Orient Express through Europe and the Queen Mary to London, travelling to Machu Pichu and, with her mother Celia DeVargas, journeying through the Canadian Rockies by train. Cristina was one of HUB International’s original employees. She began her career at Knox Vicars McLean in 1991, after working in London, England for two years following her graduation from university. KVM was one of several companies which, in 1998, formed HUB International. Cristina joined HKMB in 2001 and worked with Craig Wilson for the past 11 years. In Craig’s words “Cristina was universally liked by all colleagues, insurance company executives and underwriters and by her clients. She was active in the industry, the community and in the office. Her mentorship of others was brilliant.” There was an underlying shyness with her and yet she was refreshingly direct and unambiguous in her dealings with her colleagues at work, her clients and with insurers. Cristina was never afraid to let senior management know what she thought, and we took her advice to heart on more than one occasion. Cristina was a world traveler and in that sense an urbane and engaging conversationalist. Her curious mind, sense of wanderlust and sharp wit meant that she could carry on a conversation with anyone on any topic. In recognition of her life, laughter and love, Hub International HKMB is honoured to create this enduring tribute to Cristina De Vargas through WICC. Cristina is truly missed by all, but never forgotten. HUB International HKMB initiated Cristina’s Tribute with a $5,000 donation to WICC in 2013.

Linda Hajekerou Tribute started 2008. Early in 2008, Linda, an employee of Safety Insurance, was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Paul Martin, KRG Insurance, initiated this Tribute as a chance to express his admiration of Linda’s approach to living life, even after having been diagnosed with a terminal illness. “Linda’s will to live is inspiring and she’s shown us how important it is to laugh in the face of adversity, even if you have one day, one year or ten years ahead of you. Linda has shown incredible character.” Along with Christina Martin, Linda’s close friends and family have pledged their support at the ING Marathon and at the WICC Relay for Life challenge. Linda was initially advised she had approximately 6 months to live. But thanks to medicine, treatment, her determination and support from many friends, Linda managed to expand this to 2 years with a good quality of living. Linda passed away in March 2010. To date, Linda’s Tribute has raised over $79,200. Mary Goodbrand Tribute started in 2007. Ross Totten of Totten Group remembers Mary Goodbrand fondly – as a long-time member of the Totten family and a cherished friend. As a valued member of Totten’s Professional Liability team, Mary brought great technical strength to her job and a wealth of company knowledge. Mary was one of the first people hired into the Totten Group and had worked previously with many of the same employees at a National Wholesaler. Her friends at Totten knew her for decades. Her friends at Totten knew her well. They miss Mary’s laughter. They miss her mischievous smile. And they miss the long-time connection she brought to their team. Regrettably, Mary passed away from lung cancer in November 2006. She is remembered tonight and at every WICC Dinner by her sister – Carol Gawrylash (Sr. VP Operations at Totten Group) and the Totten team, who direct their Dinner Sponsorship and Tribute in Mary Goodbrand’s name. To keep Mary’s memory, Totten Group have for the 6th year, sponsored the WICC Dinner and collectively raised $18,000. Jamie Knowles Jamie Knowles is known to many in the insurance industry as the late husband of Carol Jardine of TD Insurance, also the father of Greg Knowles of CNA and Neal Jardine an independent Property Claims Adjuster. To his credit Jamie enrolled and took two Insurance Institute courses in order to more fully appreciate the family dinner insurance conversations, before deciding that he was much better suited to real estate. Diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2002, and given only months to live, Jamie battled back and was the beneficiary of the leading edge research of Princess Margaret Hospital. With the support of the Canadian Cancer Society, he received a stem cell transplant and multiple drug therapies as a participant in the Canadian Multiple Myeloma research trials. Throughout his fight Jamie relied on and vocalized his appreciation of the Canadian Cancer Society, whether it be their research or volunteer drivers, his doctors or Princess Margaret’s innovative treatment. Jamie is remembered for his passion for life and integrity. His battle with cancer never dampened his spirits and he continued to do what he loved the most, spending time with his family, visiting with friends, walking his dogs, golfing and horseback riding. His last evening out was to attend the 2007 WICC dinner, which he did using his walker. Many recognized him and he in turn wanted to clearly acknowledge WICC’s expanded contributions to all cancers, from their early beginnings. Jamie passed away on May 10, 2007 and it is the wish of the Knowles-Jardine family to acknowledge Jamie’s support for WICC with a tribute and donations in his honour every year. To date Jamie’s tribute has raised over $5,500.

The 19th Annual Gala Dinner for the Women In Insurance Cancer Crusade Jim McRae Jim McRae, brother-in-law and cherished friend of Traci, fought fearlessly for 2½ years before losing his battle with cancer at the age of 47. His family, wife Robin, daughter Meghan, and son Matt continue on life’s journey with the comfort of knowing he is in a better place, watching over and guiding them.
Jim lived in Wheatley for the past 12 years, and worked in Management for Daimler Chrysler, dedicating himself every day to his job, always trying to make things better. Jim had many stories to tell and opinions he shared which will remain with family and friends throughout their lifetimes. He was a proud father, passionate about hunting, fishing and the outdoors, and touched all our lives in one way or another. Jim left us on January 8, 2007, but he is “always with us”. Traci Brown of HUB International started this tribute in memory of Jim, and a worthy cause in the fight against cancer. We believe we can make a difference. Micki Traikos WICC - Tribute for Micki Traikos, Allianz Global On this day, we celebrate the life of Micki Traikos, a devoted wife, a loving mother, a doting grandmother, a loyal friend and a dependable co-worker. She was committed and loving in all her roles. She started with Allianz 23 years ago, when she joined Fireman’s Fund in 1989. At work, Micki was committed, reliable and always ensured no matter what, the work was done. She made sure that her colleagues were taken care of; Micki was always caring, faithful and a hard working person. She was our trooper. She would not miss a day of work even when she was not feeling well. In October, she was diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer and passed away five months later. She was only 59 years old. She was dignified and remained positive when she learnt that she was diagnosed with cancer. She made every moment count and spend her last moments with her family where she always wanted to be. She happily volunteered on our social committees, organize parties and always helped at company functions and ensured we all had a good time and fun. She was well respected and loved within her church community volunteering with charity organizations. We will all remember her loyalty, positive attitude and loyal friendship. At lunchtime, her friends would gather around to hear her stories of her baking and cooking. Her stories of her travels with her husband Angelo. Her love for her family, her pride in her children and the delight she got from her grandchildren. Micki was a special person, she really was, she was one of a kind and unique. She was the loveliest person you ever likely to meet. She would mother us all; she was taken from us far too soon. We miss you everyday Micki, you will always have a place in our hearts. We are all here today, to make a promise to you Micki that we will continue to fight this insidious disease called cancer. Allianz Global initiated Micki’s Tribute with a $2,500 donation to WICC in 2013.

LEW DUNN Award

The “Lew Dunn Memorial Award” is presented to the volunteer or company demonstrating exceptional initiative in raising awareness and commitment in support of WICC. Lew Dunn is a former CEO of CGU Canada (now Aviva Canada) who lost his battle with cancer in 1999.
Jean Faulkner (HUB International, Ontario) Jean has been a board member of WICC Ontario since 2002. Her responsibilities have included Golf Chair (2003 to 2005 & 2014), Gala Dinner Chair (2006) and WICC Ontario Co-Chair from 2008 to 2013. Jean has also been a wonderful ambassador for WICC within the P&C community, not only promoting WICC in her daily interactions but attending events to speak about WICC and accept donations on behalf of the organization. Jean acted as Co-Chair with both Carolyn Horan and Ellen Moore. During that time WICC moved from being a local fundraising group to a national organization enabling thousands of industry members to help make a difference.e.
Paul Martin (KRG/RRJ Insurance) Paul Martin is the President and Chief Operating Officer of RRJ Insurance Group. Paul is a highly motivated community service volunteer giving of his time to many important causes about which he is passionate. Paul is actively involved with Camp Kivita for children and the Victim Services program of York Region. However, his main focus over the last seven years has been WICC and in particular his role as Co-chair of Relay For Life. Relay is one of the Canadian Cancer Society’s most successful fundraising events and one that WICC has been a major supporter of across Canada, and within the GTA, since 2008. This one-of-a-kind experience quickly became WICC’s largest fundraising event, garnering over $376,929 in 2014 alone. This could not have happened without the stewardship of Paul, his Co-chair Mariellen Glover, and their team of committed volunteers. This year the venue moves from North York to Fort York on June 12th and Paul’s expectation is once again to raise over $350,000 for cancer research and support for those affected by this terrible illness..

GOLD FLAME Awards
The “Gold Flame Awards” are presented to individuals or organizations that have made donations exceeding $5,000 and/or made significant contributions through commitment and raising awareness. McKellar Structured Settlements For the past 17 years McKellar has hosted an annual Golf tournament to benefit WICC, as well as donations in lieu of Holiday Gifts in honour of selected clients. Since our relationship began with McKellar in 2002, over $76,800 has been contributed through these initiatives to help in the fight against cancer. This is in addition to their financial commitments as a National Sponsor – a WICC program they have been a part of since 2005. WICC is grateful to McKellar Structured Settlements for their incredible dedication and passion for WICC. In 2010, McKellar Structured Settlements was presented with the Lew Dunn Award.

The “Hall of Flame Awards” are presented to individuals or organizations that have made donations exceeding $20,000 and/or made significant contributions through commitment and raising awareness. Canadian Underwriter Magazine/Insurance Media Group In 2001, Canadian Underwriter’s Senior Publisher, Steve Wilson joined the WICC Board of Directors as Chair of Communications & Media Relations and has been closely involved in the advertising and media affairs of WICC’s various campaigns and events. One of Steve’s first initiatives was to help develop a new brand identity for WICC (its current logo) as well as help develop and launch WICC’s original website wicc.ca in 2003. As we moved into the social media era, Steve and team created WICC’s social presence which includes Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and instouch pages. Canadian Underwriter magazine helped ignite the WICC flame and has kept it glowing bright throughout the insurance industry nationally ever since.

Dear WICC Ontario members and supporters, I would like to take this opportunity to thank WICC for your exceptional support on the occasion of your annual gala dinner. Since its inception, WICC has contributed more than $11.2 million to the Canadian Cancer Society in support of breast, prostate, and general cancer research. You give us the power to fund Canada’s best cancer research and save more lives. As a result of your steadfast commitment, the Society supports research that is directly impacting the way cancer is treated today. Funds raised by WICC contribute to research breakthroughs, such as one made last year which can transform prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. A Society-funded researcher was part of an international team that developed a genetic test to predict which men are at highest risk of their prostate cancers returning following treatment. This test provides a way to identify patients who need more aggressive treatments, while avoiding over-treatment for patients whose cancers are less likely to return. “Finding the right approach to treatment means we are learning more about the complex nature of cancer. Our commitment to research continually helps to uncover more effective treatment options for patients,” says Dr Siân Bevan, Director of Research at the Canadian Cancer Society. “The incredible generosity of our donors and supporters is saving lives, and we are so grateful.” In 2014, thanks to the dedication and support of WICC and your leadership volunteers, our signature annual Relay For Life raised over $375,000 in North York. Our team is excited to plan the Industry Exclusive WICC Relay For Life Event this year, at Fort York Garrison Commons on June 12, 2015. We do hope you will join us, and encourage your friends, family and co-workers to do the same. I am grateful to share this information with you today, and look forward to yet another extraordinary year.
