he Covid-19 pandemic has been an unprecedented event for our times and very demanding on the mental health and well-being of so many families. To help navigate through stress and anxiety, leading health and safety-focused organizations have put together useful resources to support trucking and logistics employers in addressing workplace mental health. We encourage employers from our industry to explore these tools and best practices to provide mental health resources in their organizations. For a list and quick reference, visit roadtoday.com Preventing distraction-related crashes on the road and in the workplace remains a priority for Canadian employers, according to a recent report by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF). With many provinces now easing restrictions and traffic volumes returning to normal, the safety of essential workers and others who rely on our roads remains paramount. The free business tools available on the TIRF website engage employees through education, best practices, and prevention strategies to reduce distraction. They also support employers in their efforts to create safe working environments for their workforce as well as the communities through which they travel. We hope industry stakeholders will take advantage and further contribute towards improving road safety. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has set May 4-6 as the dates for this year’s International Roadcheck. Over those 72 hours, commercial motor vehicle inspectors in jurisdictions throughout Canada, Mexico and the U.S. will conduct inspections on commercial motor vehicles and drivers. This year the special focus will be on lighting issues and Hours of Service violations. Launched in collaboration with the South Asian Trucking Association of Canada, we regularly update the informative content through product watch videos, news headlines, and in-depth interviews with industry professionals. Training the mindset As the eldest of four siblings, Geetu Mahajan had no choice but to take responsibility for her family when her father passed away suddenly 20 years ago. “I had to start work 18 days after my father’s demise,” Mahajan recalled in an interview with Road Today. That early start instilled a sense of confidence and independence in her. torz, Today, Mahajan is the CEO of Compliance Mentorz, a commercial safety consulting company based in Brampton, Ont., which provides risk managementt solutions to trucking companies. She is also a National Safety Code (NSC) auditor for the Government of Alberta. Considered the gold standard in compliance, the NSC comprises 16 safety requirements for commercial vehicles and drivers. m “I am very blessed. I am the only woman from our community (to have this accreditation),” she said. gement Mahajan’s company also offers risk management training to the trucking industry as well as to other businesses. “People need to be trained and retrained. It is not only training for the profession, but training the mindset.” Mahajan said it would be great to have more women in trucking because she thinks they are usually excellent at work. “I believe women have more empathy and better coordination and administration skills. We need more women.” Asked about workplace harassment, Mahajan warned that our readers might not like her answer.

For now, though, she has settled for the job of a truck driver – still a major accomplishment as she is just one of a few South Asian women working as truck drivers in Ontario. Sidhu came to Canada in 2015 as an interna-gy, tional student pursuing studies in biotechnology, but she changed her mind and switched to office administration. They said, ‘That is a stupid job for a girl.’” On the contrary, she believes it is an interesting career. She loves the freedom and flexibility it offers. “It is really nice, and you don’t have to work under somebody.” Also, she enjoys traveling and meeting people, and one day she hopes to meet her future (truck driver) husband. “Yes, I will be marrying a truck driver because nobody else would understand what being a truck driver actually means,” Sidhu told Road Today. Of the 720 International dealerships in the U.S. and Canada, only 14 won the award in 2020, he said. The demand for dump trucks has skyrocketed in Ontario following a decision by the provincial government to start enforcing the so-called SPIF regime. In fact, the demand is so high, dealers and suppliers say they will be unable to deliver the equipment until later this year. “Since December, our volume of enquiries has gone through the roof, and we’re bordering on being more or less sold out of triaxle dump trucks at least for the next four-to-six months,” said John Baker, director of sales for Mack Trucks at Vision Truck Group of Toronto, Ont. “We have trucks and boxes planned, but we can only complete and deliver so many trucks. Spring 2021 is pretty much at capacity.” SPIF refers to the Ontario Regulation 413/05: Vehicle Weights and Dimensions for Safe, Productive, InfrastructureFriendly Vehicles. It was adopted in stages during 2000-11, and operators have had nearly 10 years of grandfathering period to comply with the rule. That deadline expired Dec. 31, and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) began enforcing the law New Year’s Day. Trucks with SPIF configurations are allowed a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 36 metric tonnes while non-SPIF vehicles will be restricted to operating at a GVWR of 27 tonnes. Baker said the larger fleets had begun ordering triaxles and tandem steer trucks in higher-than-normal volume since 2018 in anticipation of SPIF implementation. He said many dump truck operators and smaller fleets held back as long as possible. “In some cases, not fully convinced the MTO would enforce their planned SPIF changes at the end of 2020, and we saw attempts to change the government’s mind with rallies and convoys, etc.,” Baker said referring to a series protests staged by

SONNY SUBRA was heading home after a 12-hour overnight shift on Highway 401 when we met online for an interview. It wasn’t a particularly busy night for him, he said. There were just a couple of service calls, and Subra spent the rest of his shift waiting for more. That was a far cry from his “day job”. He is in Discovery Canada’s popular reality show Heavy Rescue: 401, featuring truck recovery operations in and around the Greater Toronto Area by 14 towing companies. The Ontario Provincial Police also participates, with the force’s safety czar, Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, appearing frequently on the show. The Highway thru Hell spinoff debuted in early 2017. Subra, 33, has a passion for videography, and he said it was his YouTube posts that ultimately landed him the Heavy Rescue role. He said a producer from Highway thru Hell in British Columbia contacted him after seeing his videos. “Somebody told him that I will be good on TV,” Subra recalled. The producer soon flew in to see his work first-hand. “He asked me to show him how things work (on Highway 401).” Subra said the producer watched and taped a truck recovery,

which was also his first towing experience since entering the heavy-duty sector in 2015. Until then he had been towing just passenger vehicles. Subra has an AZ licence, but never worked as a truck driver. “I don’t drive tractor-trailers. I tow them,” he said, matter-of-factly. Subra fled civil war in his home country of Sri Lanka 15 years ago. Over the years, he worked as a laborer, helper and a shopping mall janitor before entering the towing business. “This is a really good opportunity for me to have a better life and a better future in Canada. We don’t want to give up the chance,” he said. “So, whatever chance we Photo : Discovery Canada get, we take it and push it.” Subra said he didn’t realize how tough the towing job was until he started doing it, but he enjoyed it, regardless. “The first thing, it is really very dangerous. The second, it is very interesting. And the third, not everybody can do it.” The first episode of Heavy Rescue was shot in January 2016, and Subra was on it. Discovery Canada has since aired 48 episodes in five seasons, many of them featuring rescues by Subra. Season 5 premiered Jan. 5 with Big, Mean and Heavy. In that debut episode, Subra makes a career move, switching to a new employer. One of the most difficult recovery was shot in Napanee, Ont., where a fully loaded truck swerved and flipped into a ditch. “We had to pull it out, but there were a lot of complications because the truck was full and frozen.” Subra said he had received a lot of job offers because of the show, and he is now with his third employer since its debut. “I am always looking for new challenges.” Although Heavy Rescue is not aimed at children, a lot of them are watching it, Subra said. “I get a lot of fan mail, especially letters from kids. They love the show. I make sure I reply them.” Subra and his wife Suma live with their one-year-old son Nilan in Innisfil, Ont.

Rakesh Aneja to lead DTNA’s eMobility division Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has named Rakesh Aneja its new head of eMobility. Aneja will report to DTNA president and CEO Roger Nielsen. “Rakesh’s technical background and incredible Daimler experience make him extremely well-suited to take the helm of the leading eMobility program in the commercial vehicle industry,” said Nielsen. Aneja will lead all eMobility activities at DTNA, including product strategy, platform management, customer consulting and charging infrastructure services. Isaac Instruments says it’s comfortable with the timeline in place, requiring certified electronic logging devices (ELDs) to be used in Canada by June 12. Its statement comes as some organizations are calling for an enforcement deferral, since no ELDs have yet been certified. “With 40% of the major carriers in Canada relying on Isaac’s solution, we take our role seriously. We serve an essential service industry and recognize that Isaac’s technology is mission-critical for carrier operations. We must meet the needs of the transportation industry and adapt to changing regulations,” said Jacques DeLarochelliere, president and co-founder of Isaac. He went on to say Isaac will provide support to customers to ensure a smooth transition. “As a diligent supplier, we have a responsibility to always ensure our clients’ compliance,” DeLarochelliere added. “We are comfortable with the timeline, confident with the process and satisfied with the responses received from regulatory authorities these past years. The enforcement date has been known since June 12, 2019, and is therefore not a surprise. As always, we will follow the guidance on the Canadian ELD regulations.”

The Private Motor Truck Council of Canada is shifting to an online annual general meeting and conference, with a virtual event to run from June 16-18. “With the continued development of Covid-19, it became obvious to our board that we could not in good conscience move forward with an in-person event,” said president Mike Millian, in a related press release. “Large indoor gatherings are still not recommended in order to help prevent the spread of Covid-19, and when we look at Canada’s hope to have 50% of the population vaccinated by the end of June, the board felt the likelihood of any large gathering being allowed, or even recommended before then, are very remote.” It will be the council’s second virtual conference in as many years. The June 16 event will cover legal issues, Covid-19 and driver health, a private fleet benchmarking survey, and managing driver behavior. The next day will address topics including natural gas, cargo theft, autonomous vehicle regulatory and contractual considerations, and cognitive impairment and future workplace testing. The final days will touch on topics including engaging staff and drivers to improve company performance; and carrier, vendor and law enforcement responses to Covid-19.

Peterbilt unveils new, redesigned

Model 579 Peterbilt Motors Company has announced the launch of its new on-highway Model 579. According to the company, the thoroughly redesigned model delivers improvements in aerodynamics, efficiency, comfort, technology and uptime. Peterbilt worked with over 50 of its customers to understand their unique operations and needs, incorporating their input into the design of the new 579. Validation units accumulated 1.5 million real world miles and combined with the durability testing done at the Paccar Technical Center, the new model is the most reliable truck ever designed by the company. Developed over a five-year span, over 1,000 hours of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis and 7.8 million CPU processing hours were spent evaluating the exterior design of the new 579. The research resulted in an enhanced aerodynamic profile and a 7% improvement in fuel economy. DTNA invests in Detroit plant to build ePowertrain Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has invested US$20 million into its Detroit manufacturing plant to build the new Detroit ePowertrain. It will be used to power Freightliner eCascadia and eM2 electric trucks. Initially, the Detroit ePowertrain will offer an eAxle design, offered in two variants. The single motor design is rated at 180 hp, delivering up to 11,500 lb.-ft. of torque, while a dual motor design offers twice the power and torque. The RPL10 and RPL14 are Meritor’s first medium-duty (Class 6-7) entries in the Permalube RPL driveline family, and they come permanently lubricated for service-free performance. Meritor says its Permalube RPL Series drivelines were the first in the North American heavy-duty commercial vehicle industry to be permanently lubricated and sealed for life. The new drivelines are engineered for medium-duty applications such as refuse, city delivery, transit buses and school buess. Other benefits include increased uptime and reduced operating costs compared to traditional driveline designs, the company adds.

The U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has recently proposed adding impact guards to the list of annual inspection items. And Utility says these bumpers exceed all rear trailer guard safety regulations. The ICC underride guard complies with U.S. and Transport Canada regulations, as well as standards set through the IIHS ToughGuard program. International HX rides on Haulmaax EX Hendrickson has partnered with Navistar to offer its next-generation rubber suspension, the Haulmaax EX, as a part of the chassis enhancements to the International HX vocational truck. Hendrickson’s next-generation, heavy-duty rubber suspension, the Haulmaax EX, will be the standard rubber suspension offering for the HX, addressing the growing demand for rubber suspensions across all vocational applications, the company said. The design features up to a 70,000-pound site rating for the 46,000-pound-capacity suspension. Available capacities include 40,000, 46,000, and 52,000 lb.

Hyundai Translead sheds weight, unveils new trailer panel Hyundai Translead has enhanced its 2021 dry and refrigerated van trailers in the name of shedding weight and improving durability – and introduced a lightweight polymer fiber core composite panel. Changes that come to the enhanced lightweight composite dry van trailer save 330 lb. per trailer. Features include a new rear header, standard side panel and side rail designs. The upper coupler has been fully hot-dipped galvanized to fight corrosion. And maintenance has been eased through harness routing in the rear door header and the side composite panels, the company says.

Rand McNally brings more power to a seven-inch screen Rand McNally is bringing added power to a slightly smaller screen with the launch of the OverDryve 7 Pro II, following the recent launch of the OverDryve 8 Pro II. The OverDryve 7 Pro II device and its seven-inch screen delivers navigation, Sirius XM radio, a fully adjustable dash cam with a G sensor, phone calls and hands-free texting, and a web browser, among other features. Behind it all is the Rand Navigation 2.0 system that includes more truck-specific routes and real-time, traffic-influenced routing.
