EP&T has launched a new feature for our print readers and online users. It’s called a QR Code (short for Quick Response) and it serves as an excellent bridge between print and the on-line platform. These specific two-dimensional matrix barcodes are readable by smart phones, via built-in cameras (or dedicated QR barcode reader). You may have noticed one placed directly on the front page of this magazine, and will find them further dotted throughout this edition corresponding with advertisements and editorial content. One of the drawbacks of mobile web browsing has always been the difficulties in finding (and the lack of) suitable mobile websites, as well as the need to type in long and complicated URLs. Initially developed for the manufacturing process, QR codes have quickly caught on in publishing. Once you have downloaded the appropriate ‘App’ to your phone, scan the QR symbol and a web URL is launched into the mobile phone’s web browser. From there, the code directs you to a piece of information. Businesses can use QR Codes to provide coupons, offer technical advice and information, stage competitions, replace business cards or give access to company literature. Additionally,

companies can use QR Codes for advertising and/or directing consumers to their social media sites. A major plus with QR Codes is that they can essentially be printed on anything, from paper to a t-shirt. As a technology, QR codes are here to stay and it will only get better, faster and allow for more interactivity, especially as we see adoption rates continue to increase. Like every other piece of new technology in this fast-changing market, we need more and more consumer adoption for it to be meaningful for our advertising partners. And, we need our advertising partners to deliver strong messaging and rewards that makes it all worth while for our readers. Print media is the natural home for this kind of technology and that’s why it’s by far the most popular now. Print is the original on-demand medium and QR codes, when done right, deliver to our reader the opportunity to demand more and get more instantaneously. Power electronic suppliers align to tap green markets
Sister power electronic players ICT Power Company Inc. and Innovation Plus Power Systems Inc., Burlington ON, seeks to broaden its sales approach within the emerging green markets globally with its recent acquisition of Ottawa-based Iconopower Ltd. ICT Power and Iconopower specialize in providing similar but different product line components to the power electronics and automation industry. Innovation Plus Power Systems provides systems and sub-assemblies, as well as engineering services to various clients in the power conversion and control arena. ICT Power president and CEO, Afshin Montazeri says the acquisition is part of a long term strategy to expand all three companies sales globally, into new emerging green markets with the latest inverter technologies, as well as supporting its existing SCR and diode based systems worldwide. The companies will continue to operate as separate business entities but will work together to maximize the benefit to the companies’ customers, sales and distribution organizations and supply chain partners, explained Montazeri. “I feel that there is a very strong synergy between what Iconopower, ICT Power and Innovation Plus can provide. This move allows us to capitalize on each other’s strengths and to offer a wider array of solutions as the biggest distributors of power electronics and automation components in Canada,” says Mike Wilson, director of marketing, Iconopower.
Sysacom doubles its pcb facility Responding to increasing demand in its engineering, printed circuit board (pcb) layout and production services, Montreal-area Sysacom R&D Inc. has moved into an expanded industrial workspace. Now located at 275A boulevard in Pierre-Le Gardeur QC, Sysacom has doubled its former space, now comprising 6,000-square-feet in the same industrial park. Sysacom develops custom electronic circuits, as well as systems and related software. In business for more than 14 years, the firm has 23 full-time employees, including 10 engineers.
Phoenix Contact opens Eastern Canadian office, training centre Phoenix Contact Canada Ltd., Mississauga ON, recently completed the set-up of its Eastern Canadian regional office located in St-Laurent QC. The new facility enables Phoenix Contact to provide local support for its broad range of industrial components, electronics and automation solutions. “Our team of knowledgeable account, product and application specialists, are well positioned to offer the customer a high level of local and timely customer care”, says Stephane Tremblay, Eastern Canadian regional sales manager, at a recent partner event. The Quebec office includes an automation lab, new product displays and a training room waiting to provide the market with informative seminars on products, applications and technology. An open house and barbecue for customers and industry partners will be held on May 19th.
Altair Engineering opens Montreal office Hoping to tap the hub of Canada’s aerospace industry, Toronto-based Altair Engineering Inc., global provider of simulation technology and engineering services, has opened an office in Montreal. The expansion follows a substantial increase in demand for Altair’s HyperWorks suite of computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools among major aerospace manufacturers and suppliers in Canada. Altair’s Montreal office conducts technical support and engineering projects and is consulting with aerospace companies on deployment of HyperWorks solutions. Altair Engineering Canada has been headquartered in Toronto since 2006. The company established a presence in Quebec in 2008 and today works with the country’s key aerospace producers and suppliers.

Montreal area-based independent stocking distributor Mondial Electronics Inc. has finalized its new ownership agreement, whereby a 60% majority ownership has purchased the balance of shares from the minority (40%) partner of the company. The firm also anticipates adding 4 or 5 new salespeople, while also upgrading its POS, quality and logistic systems. Avnet Electronics Marketing Toronto/Mississauga office was recently recognized for becoming Avnet’s first branch in North America to reach the $1-million mark in sales of FCI Interconnect products. Through 2010, Avnet increased its FCI sales by 26% over the previous year. One of Avnet’s internal keys to the success was driven by its branch’s IP&E sales manager, Chris Rollauer, who joined the distributor one year ago after working for FCI as a sales engineer. Like most of the electronics world, oscilloscopes continue to evolve to include more capabilities and features at price points that make them affordable to almost everyone. Features like integrated function generators, large displays, fast update rates and mixed signal capabilities are now available in oscilloscopes priced lower than industry benchmarks. In addition, there are many scope features that users are unaware of. Some of which allow engineers and designers to save valuable
time in their debug and design process.
Integrated function generator
When you look on an engineer’s lab, you are likely to find several common pieces of equipment. First and foremost, you will probably find an oscilloscope; second, you will likely find a function generator. Unfortunately, that function generator isn’t always there – perhaps a colleague borrowed it; perhaps you don’t have room on your bench for one. However, if your scope had a built-in function generator, like Agilent’s 2000 X-Series or 3000 X-Series, it would always be available to provide stimulus for your designs – no need to search for one. In addition, you save the space of a second piece of equipment and you get to setup your function generator using the same GUI and display as your oscilloscope (Figure 1). The fastest update rate available today is over 1,000,000 waveforms per second in Agilent’s 3000 X-Series. That is up to 200 times faster than comparable scopes.
Large display
Digital channels
One of the first things you notice about an oscilloscope is the display – the size of it and the crispness of it. Having a display that is large enough to easily see your waveform and any math/ measurements/analysis you may be doing is invaluable – no need to hide menus to see your waveform and then unhide them to see your measurements. In addition, having a display that has higher resolution allows you to easily see more information. For example, an 8.5” WVGA display provides almost double the viewing area and five times the resolution of a 5.7” QVGA display.
Have you ever had the need for a few extra channels in your oscilloscope? Or maybe you need a few logic analyzer channels but can’t afford a full logic analyzer? A mixed signal oscilloscope (MSO) could be a perfect fit for your needs. A mixed signal oscilloscope combines the traditional analog channels of an oscilloscope with 8 or 16 digital channels. An oscilloscope where those digital channels are integrated in to the scope (versus a separate pod) can provide very powerful triggering capabilities. An example of where you could use a MSO to save significant time is debugging a DDR interface; typical scopes don’t have enough channels to trigger on a write or read, but an MSO gives you the ability to trigger on more than four channels to isolate reads from writes. Agilent’s MSO-X 2000 family of oscilloscopes offers an integrated, upgradable, eight-channel MSO in an oscilloscope.
Update rate The old saying ‘ignorance is bliss’ may be true in some things, but it is definitely not the case when an infrequent glitch is keeping your design from working. Oscilloscopes are critical to debug and troubleshooting and a scope with a fast update rate can save immeasurable time and headaches. What is update rate? It is how quickly the oscilloscope can trigger, process the information it has captured, display it, and then re-arm to trigger again; the time
Upgradability
For almost everyone, budgets are getting tighter. While an oscilloscope is typically a designer’s main piece of equipment, it can sometimes be difficult to have your oscilloscope grow with your project’s needs. One way around this is to upgrade your current equipment. It may be easier to get a few thousand dollars approved to upgrade your current equipment, versus enough budget to buy a completely new instrument. Applications Oscilloscopes are first and foremost viewing tools, but they have also evolved over time to be more application specific tools as well. An oscilloscope with a CAN trigger and decode option will actually decode the CAN bus to provide protocol level information in addition to the physical layer waveforms (Figure 2). This can be a significant time saver versus counting 1s and 0s and trying to decode the bus yourself. In addition, the scope triggering is adapted to be ‘protocol aware’. This allows you to trigger on specific packet or frame information versus the scope’s standard triggering. Another time saving application is segmented memory. Segmented memory allows you to only digitize the information that you want. By only digitizing the information you tell the scope to, it saves valuable memory and allows you to capture a significantly larger amount of time at a higher sample rate (Figure 3). Segmented memory is suitable for any bursty signal like radar bursts, serial packets/frames, etc. Mask testing is another application that turns the scope from a traditional oscilloscope to a pass/fail tester. Mask testing allows you to test against a known good waveform; if the oscilloscope detects a violation of the mask, you can set it to do any number of different options. This in and of itself is a time saver, but it becomes even more powerful if you have an oscilloscope that can test against the mask very quickly.
Other Time-Saving Features There are many other features available in scopes that can help you save time, but

Over the past few decades, the use of sophisticated electronics for automation and process controls as well as transformers, VFDs and PLCs have become commonplace in NEMA enclosures. The thermal management and related costs of these electronic enclosures has become very important considerations in managing these valuable assets. NEMA cabinets are used for protection from the harsh environments encountered in many industries, both indoor

and outdoors. Without some form of cooling, problems will occur with heat sensitive electronics in these enclosures. Most electronics can handle temperatures between 40c and 50c, some more, some less. It is always a good idea to check the manufacturer’s specifications regarding the maximum allowable operating temperature of the devices being used; this is key in making the correct thermal decision for your applications.
Outdoor installations
Also, for outdoor installations, factor in the correct solar heat load, an often overlooked source of heat related failures. As always, the best solution is prevention via some sort of overhang or cover but if this is not possible, an accurate solar load calculation is a must. The following are the most popular enclosure cooling choices in the marketplace, along with some general cost considerations and assumptions needed to make a good decision. First and simplest is to purchase a cabinet large enough that it can take full advantage of natural convection to remove waste heat via the cabinet’s un-insulated metal walls. However, you might not have the real estate for this option, and it could potentially cost more money than cooling because of the cost of the metal cabinet, especially if it’s made of stainless steel. Second would be a filtered fan cooling system. This option is the most economical PM of all but is not preferred in dirty or 2:24:34 humid environments. A filter fine enough

Next are the compressed air coolers. They use plant air to create a ‘cyclone’ effect that cools the inside of the cabinet. The high cost of your compressed air supply should be considered and whether that air is dry and oil-free. Like the fan and filter method, short term gains are often offset by long term maintenance issues and hidden costs. Air conditioners are the most frequently used cooling method. When electronics first made their way into the plant, air conditioners had to be used because the low thermal thresholds of early electronics required that the devices inside be ‘refrigerated’ to below ambient conditions. But in today’s world, components are made to withstand much more heat without harm or performance de-rating; they do not require ‘refrigeration’. Since air

conditioning units cost more to install and maintain and use far more energy than most other options, where possible they are being replaced by alternative cooling solutions. Two of the most cost effective, reliable and energy efficient alternative cooling methods are the air-to-air and air-towater heat exchanger. Where appropriate, the heat exchanger delivers the best value and ROI due to its low initial cost, negligible power consumption and long life. These designs have become increasingly popular both in new panel installations and retrofit of older panels.
Heat exchangers
The water industry has a unique advantage with its ability to employ easily available sources of water (typically under 2 GPM) for use in air to water panel coolers. These devices cost pennies on the dollar per BTU/hr compared to all other methods, and are the most ‘green’ and environmentally friendly solution as well. Also, this clean but heated water can often be reused in some other process, taking advantage of the heat energy it carries with it. Whatever your requirements, look at the long term energy and maintenance costs as well as initial purchase price in evaluating your panel cooling alternatives. The initial cost is known, but you should probably assume that operating and energy costs will only continue to climb. Give them serious consideration in making your decision.

Good quality sets are essential to create the correct mood and atmosphere for each scene. It is common for set designers to use motion to create dynamic sets that enhance performances. This is done through the use of moving elements such as rotating platforms, linear motion, and even theatrical flight. In the past, elements were moved manually by stagehands, limiting what could be achieved. But today, automation technology is invading the theatre, and opening up a whole world of opportunities to add depth and excitement to performances. Gareth Conner, and his company, Creative Conners Inc., of Barrington, Rhode Island, are the moving force behind the introduction of automation to theatre. For over a decade, Gareth worked the theatre industry, creating sets for everything from regional theatres to large productions. Here he discovered his passion for bringing theatre sets to life through motion. But he also saw that much of the theatre world did not have access to automation, because existing systems were too expensive and complicated. This led to his vision of an entirely new automation system that was modular, open, easy to use, and affordable. The rest is a classic American entrepreneurial success story. In 2004, Gareth left his job, mortgaged his house, and set out to develop his vision into a line of products that make automation accessible to all levels of theatre. Developing and manufacturing a high quality, professional looking product line, on a tight budget, and at niche volumes was challenging, but four months later, he had sold his first product, and he achieved breakeven within a year. According to Gareth, “Protocase was instrumental to our success during the early years. At this time, I was just one guy in a basement, and I didn’t know much about sheet metal. I tried to get a combination of local shops to build and finish the metal parts that I needed. Suppliers in these markets are therefore looking to improve the performance of their systems with technology that is complimentary to existing battery based systems. Whilst lead acid batteries are relatively inexpensive and store significant amounts of energy they do not operate well under fast response conditions. ‘Bridge Power’ is a term used to describe short-term power, which can bridge from one power supply to another. An example of the use of Bridge Power is in the event of a main power failure when the standby power generator may not be immediately available or, indeed if the generator itself suffers a failure. Bridge Power is typically implemented with battery or, increasingly, with supercapacitor and battery banks in combination which are deployed locally to support temporary power to missioncritical equipment. This can either be as a stand-alone uninterruptible power supply (UPS) or integrated into specific equipment. The combination of both bridge and long-term power generation is necessary because the cost asso-
ciated with extended bridge power is high relative to a standby generator, for example. Increasingly, critical installations are using a cascading architecture where a number of power sources are utilized for back-up power. In addition to traditional diesel generators and batteries, more sophisticated systems are now employing fuel cells, supercapacitors and flywheels. With the growth in demand from telecommunications and data systems, which are highly power outage sensitive, this trend towards fast response short term bridging will continue.
Supercapacitor advantages Supercapacitors have made rapid advancements in recent years, driven by the development of materials which can enable increased performance and lower cost manufacturing. These products exhibit energy densities, which place them well above standard capacitors while retaining significant power density advantages over batteries. It is this profile that makes them ideally suited to short term bridging power. In additional to these characteristics, the use of supercapacitors in Bridge Power applications is driven by a number of key factors: • Since the supercapacitor is used as a high speed bridge, its power density profile is suited to support the initial

response over periods of between 30 to 100 seconds. A battery, though slower to respond, is typically sized to deliver more energy after the initial high speed phase and over a long, steady state period. • Supercapacitors are able to hold charge voltage over long periods without loss of capacity whereas batteries lose charge when held on charge. • Lifetime cost and maintenance cost reductions. Supercapacitors are capable of many hundred of thousand of cycles (300 – 500K plus), whereas batteries are typically specified at less than one thousand cycles. Field repairs and replacements, especially in remote areas can be 100s of times more expensive than depot servicing. • Supercapacitors typically have better low temperature performance. Temperature is typically electrolyte dependent, however, Nanotecture’s device, for example, operates at -40C as compared to -20C to -30C for lead acid.

Advantages of supercapacitors The case has been made for the performance advantages of employing supercapacitors rather than batteries for high-speed bridge power in systems which are intolerant to power interruption. However, while supercapacitors have been available and evaluated for some time, they have not yet made a major breakthrough in this application. Back-up power system manufacturers have highlighted cost as the major barrier to entry. Supercapacitor costs are typically higher than lead acid batteries. Whilst back-up power manufacturers will accept some level of premium in order to gain the advantages highlighted above, the balance is in favor of lead acid at the moment. Nanotecture addresses cost at in three major areas. Firstly, our device includes a water-based electrolyte which enables a low-cost manufacturing process. By comparison, the current generation of capacitors use an organic based electrolyte, which requires a costly drying process to remove moisture from the electrodes prior to insertion in the acid. Secondly, Nanotecture has developed a unique hybrid electrochemistry which combines an asymmetric electrode configuration with our patented nanoporous material. The use of an asymmetric architecture enables higher energy density than is typically found in symmetrical carbon/ carbon devices. This advantage can either be taken as a performance advantage or as a cost reduction. Nanotecture’s nanoporous material is based on a proprietary low cost process known as Liquid Crystal Templating (LCT), which creates a very high surface area material without resorting to higher cost nano-particles. The benefit for back-up power manufacturers is that, at the system level, fewer supercapacitors cells are required to meet the specification.
Conclusion They provide significant performance and life cost advantages to back-up power system manufacturers and are now reaching a price point where they can be deployed in much higher volumes than previously considered. This application is an emerging market, which recognizes that an alternative to batteries exists but is concerned by performance/cost/lifetime trade-offs. University of Calgary to deliver working knowledge of nanotechnology The University of Calgary has introduced a nanoscience program aimed at providing participants with working knowledge of nanotechnology and valuable exposure to cutting-edge instrumentation used to fabricate nanomaterials. Becoming the first school in Canada to implement the NanoProfessor Nanoscience Education brand program, the University of Calgary says it will provide instrumentation, curriculum and hands-on labs to expand students’ understanding, skills and real-world experience needed to succeed in the growing nanotechnology industry. The NanoProfessor program is a division of NanoInk Inc., Skokie IL, creator of Dip Pen Nanolithography (DPN) tools for fabricating MEMS and other nanoscale devices. “Not only does the NanoProfessor

TI acquires National Semiconductor Texas Instruments Inc. (TI), Dallas TX, and National Semiconductor Corp., Santa Clara CA, have signed a definitive agreement under which TI will acquire National for USD$25 per share in an all-cash transaction of about $6.5-billion. The acquisition combines two industry leaders in analog semiconductors, each with unique strengths in delivering products to improve performance and efficiency and convert real-world signals in electronic systems. The boards of directors of both companies have unanimously approved the transaction.
