be unique I’ve had the pleasure of visiting some amazing destinations in the last few months: Jamaica, Bermuda, Panama, Bahamas and more. I always thought that when you plan a destination wedding in tropical locations such as these, the only logical ceremony location is the beach. The ocean, the breeze, the sand under your toes – what could be better than that? But here’s the thing: there’s more to these locations than just beaches. Look for old churches, gardens, mountainscapes, rooftops with incredible views or gazebos tucked away on resort grounds. I’m guessing the reason you’re considering a destination wedding is partially because of the unique location, so take advantage of that. When you’re booking your wedding at a resort, for example, ask about options other than the beach. Many properties have cute chapels, while others can provide quiet, secluded options surrounded by lush greenery. Keep your options open. And while you’re thinking about unique locations, get creative with other aspects of your wedding, too. Choose local flowers, dishes and recipes native to the country you’re visiting, and interesting favours from the area (like rum, chocolates, perfume or wine). When the wedding is over, you and your guests will have had a truly unique experience. Oh, and you’ll be married and embarking upon a new adventure!

So, you want to have a destination wedding rather than a bash on home turf? Congrats! The first major decision has been made. Give yourself a pat on the back. Now comes the task of choosing where to have your wedding, and a lot of things could come into play here, from the logistics of the travelling to who is attending, to the type of wedding you want to have.
HERE ARE 10 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE CHOOSING.
WHERE ARE YOUR FAMILIES TRAVELLING FROM? If the majority of your family (and friends) live close to major international airports, this will facilitate the long-distance travel. If everyone is spread out, though, you may have to consider more mainstream destinations (in the Caribbean, for example) to make coordinating travel plans easier. Otherwise, you’ll be organizing departure and arrival times that are all over the place.
HOW FAR IS EVERYONE WILLING TO TRAVEL?

Beach resorts will obviously have water-related sports and excursions, ursions which may not be up everyone’s alley. Similarly, towns will have activities such as walking tours – this could be difficult for older guests or those who have limited mobility. Check out the kinds of sights and attractions they offer in each of the destinations you’re considering, and let them guide you in your final decision.

WHAT SORTS OF ACTIVITIES WILL EVERYONE ENJOY?
A destination wedding to Tahiti or Fiji, where flight times are very long, means more expensive tickets as well as more time needed for travel, which could prove tricky for guests. However, if you know that your family and friends are willing to go the distance, then the sky’s the limit in terms of choosing a locale, near or far.

If kids are being invited to your destination wedding, you’ll want to inquire about family-friendly amenities, such as pools and kids’ clubs, parks or playgrounds, daycare services and even menu options for children. Some resorts offer free stays for kids. Invited parents will thank you for these considerations.

WHAT ARE THE SAME-SEX MARRIAGE LAWS?
Some couples dream of a barefoot wedding on the sand, while others imagine being surrounded by historic ivy-covered walls. What is your ultimate wedding experience? It really depends on the city or town, and the places where weddings are permitted to be held. The tourism department there should be able to guide you to unique places to exchange vows.

HOW ACCESSIBLE IS YOUR HONEYMOON FROM YOUR DESTINATION WEDDING LOCALE? If you’re travelling from your wedding to a honeymoon, you may want to cut down on the miles between the two. It will minimize your overall stress levels in that there’s less travel, less packing and unpacking and less planning.

Your wedding date could impact the destination you choose, in that different places experience a wide range of weather patterns and seasons. Picture celebrating the biggest day of your life amidst a backdrop of luscious grape vines strung with cafe lights – the aroma fresh local fare paired with the finest area wines for your guests to enjoy. Given that most wineries offer spectacular backdrops for photos, along with superb beverage options, it’s no wonder they are a popular go-to destination for wedding parties. If you’re considering a winery for your upcoming nuptials, there is a plethora to choose from too. Case in point, there are more than 4,600 wineries in California alone. But keep in mind that not all wineries are equipped to host your big day. So be sure to do your due diligence before getting too invested on a particular location. Whenever possible, tour the winery beforehand. Ask about catering on the premises and flexibility with the menu – or whether you can bring in your own food. Other key questions to ask include: Are there sufficient restroom facilities? Will there be another wedding happening there right before, after or during yours? Are there any rental or liability fees outside of the per person price? You don’t want any surprises on your bill after the fact. FRASER VALLEY, British Columbia The wineries in BC compete with the best in the world. With five wine regions there are also plenty of locations to choose from. The Fraser valley is a good option given its close proximity to Vancouver. Vinoscenti in South Surrey, B.C., for example, is located on 13 acres of scenic farmland – and offers the chance for a scenic small-seater airplane flight over the local area. This winery is also keen to partner with local wedding planners, videographers and caterers to help you plan your ultimate day.

Given its natural beauty and abundance of floral gardens, this picturesque region is a hot spot for weddings in Ontario. One winery to consider is Kurtz Orchards, which features a wooden-floored tent to accommodate 300 people, as well as an indoor barnlike option. It also houses a large wooden bridge over a koi pond – a perfect backdrop for pictures. Plus, guests will love staying at one of the gorgeous inns or bed and breakfasts in the area.
California’s reputation for world-class wines and awe-inspiring vistas precedes itself. At Chardonnay Golf Club you’ll be surrounded by 150 acres of vineyards and hopefully be on hand to experience one of their spectacular sunsets – plus your guests can do some golfing on the side, so don't forget to pack your clubs. The winery prides itself in accommodating any wedding, no matter the size and budget.
If your budget allows it, Tuscany (in central Italy) offers plenty of wineries to impress, with backdrops of sunflowers and rolling hills, plus your pick of castles to host a truly unforgettable party. If you don’t speak the language or know the area intricately, it’s best to find a wedding planner in the region, who can work with local florists, caterers and other vendors. Any winery wedding list would be remiss without a nod to Bordeaux, which is dubbed the wine capital of the world. Amanda and Adam Wall knew right away that eloping was a good choice. The adventurous couple travelled from Australia to Santorini to share their vows. During the planning process, the couple did tell their families. “We felt like it was the right thing to do,” says Amanda. “It definitely wasn’t something all of our family accepted at first (and perhaps still don’t), but we knew our wedding would be cherished more by ourselves than in front of anyone else.” Amanda’s advice to couples planning to elope: nail down a budget and stick to it. Plus, find an amazing photographer who will capture the magic of every moment and ask for help and recommendations from your hotel/resort regarding hair and makeup, florals and post-ceremony celebration. “Saying vows alone to each other was actually our favourite part,” Amanda says. “Our voices and words were only heard by us, then lost in the wind. It was so private, personal and oh so perfect. We wouldn’t change it for anything.”

MELISSA AND IAN With family in both Australia and Canada, Melissa and Ian found it difficult to find a wedding location to accommodate everyone. So, instead, the couple eloped in Mo’orea in the French Polynesia and had two separate parties afterwards one in Australia and one in Canada. “We told both our families beforehand,” says Melissa. “On the whole, everyone was very encouraging.” They booked a travel package with a travel agent and their wedding photographers (SV Photograph) planned the rest.

Research Get to know your destination ahead of your trip. If you plan on purchasing locally-made items for favours or wedding party gifts, make a game plan rather than wandering around a new city, hoping you’ll find what you need. Gifts from your destination are a better idea than bringing favours from home.
Make appointments Book mani/pedis, hair trials, makeup trials and the actual hair and makeup appointments before you get to your destination.
GET WRITING
Write your vows, toasts and speeches. You might think you can do it while you’re laying on the beach, a couple days before the ceremony. Wrong! You won’t have the time. Writing them beforehand will be less stressful. (Bring a hard copy and email a copy to yourself, too!)
Guest goodie bags Begin to collect items for welcome bags, if you plan on having them. Or, contact someone on-site at your destination to purchase items so you don’t have to carry them with you.
Passports Do you have one? Is it up to date (meaning it has at least six months until it expires)? Remind your guests to check their passport status as well.

Assuming your venue is booked, be sure that a block of rooms to be set aside for your guests. It is much more fun to all be in the same area of a large resort.

UNIQUE ASPECTS: Instead of getting married on the beach, the couple chose an elegant gazebo set back from the water. This gave them privacy and made for a more intimate setting, as opposed to getting married in front of all the hotel guests. HARDEST PART TO PLAN: The menu selection was tough for the couple, especially without being able to taste it beforehand. It turned out to be delicious! WOULD YOU HAVE DONE ANYTHING DIFFERENT? “I would have kept the DJ for one hour longer,” says Christene. “The celebration and dancing with my closest family and friends was too much fun!” DESTINATION WEDDING ADVICE: Don’t stress! Everything comes together in the end. You’re in a beautiful country and that alone will make everything perfect!
BEST PART OF THE DAY: Christene says, “My first steps coming down the aisle. I felt like a princess and had many emotions running though me! Mark’s favourite part was our first dance. We took lessons for the Viennese Waltz!”

FAVOURITE PART: After the ceremony, the couple hopped into their Alfa Romeo convertible and drove through the picturesque Tuscan countryside, sharing some quiet oneon-one time together. UNIQUE IDEAS: “It was really important to celebrate both of our cultures,” says Briar. “Paolo’s family is Italian, and mine is Chinese and British. Having everyone together at the villa prior to the wedding allowed us the time to have the Chinese tea ceremony. This was such a special way to start the wedding festivities, and the start of our two families and cultures coming together.” TOUGHEST PART TO PLAN: There are so many moving parts with 50 guests flying to Italy not only for your wedding, but also for a one-week stay at a villa. Briar says, “It was like planning several weddings! There were no difficult decisions, but the volume of decisions can be difficult.” WRONG TURN? The bride’s father drove her to the church and they got lost for an hour! Though they arrived a little late, it didn’t ruin the day.

FAVOURITE PART: During the intimate and emotional ceremony, monkeys came out of the trees just as Kelly began walking down the aisle! Also, the Costa Rican BBQ dinner was amazing. UNIQUE IDEAS: Instead of a cake cutting, Kelly and Andrew did piñatas! They had bride and groom stuffed with mini liquor bottles and candy. Needless to say, the guests were very happy to participate. TOUGHEST PART TO PLAN: Kelly says it was whether to wear her hair up or down! “It seems so small, but I agonized about it! My hair is my favourite physical feature about myself – but with the heat and humidity I decided to go for a more classic updo. Beach waves, or even my regular curls, were no match for the Costa Rican afternoon sun!” DESTINATION WEDDING ADVICE: The bride has a few tips. First, get a wedding planner – it really eliminates stress. Second, hire a great photographer (it will be worth every penny). And lastly, “Sprinkle in some wow-factor. For us it was the piñatas, sangria bar and taco bar.”
OVERALL EXPERIENCE: “The number of guests, the different culture and all the personal touches of doing it ‘off the resort’ made it the best day. We are so happy!”

Christine Lim Photography TOUGH DECISION: “Initially, we were planning to get married locally, in Toronto, in a more intimate setting,” says Han. “We found that it was really too difficult to cut down our guest list, especially with huge families. So we decided to return to Hawaii (Patrick had proposed in Maui) with our closest friends and family, and hold a local reception afterwards for everyone else.” MUSICAL GUESTS: Music was a very important part of the wedding planning and the couple was not disappointed. The band was able to create a laid-back, acoustic atmosphere.Three different DJs (friends and family) spun sets at the after party with Patrick making a short guest appearance on the turntables as well! OVERALL FEELING: The couple wanted a relaxed, intimate affair, full of joy – and that’s exactly what they got. After securing their vendors, Han says, “We were able to let go of a lot of the little details and just let the day come together. I think the lack of total control over a destination wedding is one of the beauties of it.”
