But for many, financial pressures create unnecessary barriers; some even go without food to make ends meet.

Graduates from ECU go on to make significant positive impacts locally in our community and across the world in a variety of different ways. Right now, far too many of our hardworking students are struggling to reach the finish line of their degrees and enter the workforce.

Over the last two years, we’ve witnessed record numbers of students applying for financial support, no doubt due to the rising cost of living. While the number of scholarship applicants increased exponentially, the number of scholarships available, unfortunately, remained the same.

With your help, we can meet this growing need, bridge the gap, and support more deserving students now and into the future.

Joel Barby & Western Power

Reward hard work & initiative

After relocating away from his family in Queensland to study here at ECU, graduate engineer Joel Barby impressed his lecturers and future employer, Western Power, with his work ethic and drive.

Before receiving a scholarship from Western Power, Joel worked close to full-time hours while studying late into the night to complete his course.

Although this is an impressive display of time-management, dedication, and work ethic, life skills many of our students have in abundance, it can lead to students burning out, delaying or discontinuing their courses because of the unsustainable strain this juggle has on their time and relationships.

Understanding the immense challenges hardworking students like Joel experience, the team at Western Power has partnered with us for over 10 years to alleviate these struggles.

Since 2016, Western Power has committed to donating $10,000 per year per student, connecting with and helping up to three recipients at a time supporting them over the entire length of their course, and beyond, with readily available vacation employment placements and graduate opportunities.

Since graduating from ECU in 2024, Joel has thrived, leveraging his qualifications, life skills and the connections he has made at Western Power. His future looks bright and successful thanks to Western Australia’s power people – Western Power.

Myra Ugle & Perth Airport

Empower future leaders

Transitioning to university life ca n be a daunting task, but relocating alone with no money, 213km from the small town of Collie to Perth with no money is next level.

This was the huge step Myra Ugle took at just 19. The critical support the team at Perth Airport provided Myra eased this daunting task, making this transition so much easier.

At just 28 years old, Myra has already carved out an impressive career trajectory. Now working as Aboriginal Mediation Services Manager at the Department of Justice, she’s in a role that many twice her age would be proud to hold.

She humbly attributes her success in part to the corporate scholarship she received while studying at ECU.

For 15 years, The Perth Airport Scholarship has helped nearly 30 students like Myra by providing comprehensive corporate scholarships that include financial assistance as well as career starting internship placements. In Myra’s case, her work experience turned into a three-year employment contract and her launchpad into industry.
