It has been a wonderful year filled with growth and adventure for our Girl Scouts. As you take time to reflect, also take time to look forward to the new opportunities available in Girl Scouting found in this publication, with other Girl Scouts, and how you will grow individually. Coming this spring, the expanded program themes of Sports and Recreation, Outdoor Adventure, Balanced Living, Technology and Innovation, Animals and Nature, Art and Imagination, Leadership and Your Future, and Your World Near and Far are sure to help you have fun while learning. It’s a great time to encourage others to join you in Girl Scouts! Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland was well represented at the National Council Session and Girl Scouts Unite in Washington, D.C. It was energizing to visit with Girl Scouts from around the country, but most especially the troop from Norton, Kansas, and our elected delegation. The 2029 convention host city is Indianapolis, Indiana; I hope to see you there. I appreciate you nominating the trusted, encouraging Girl Scout adults in your life for an award. During the November Volunteer Recognition and Annual Meeting, we will celebrate outstanding volunteers who have dedicated time and talent in supporting our girls. One trusted and encouraging adult active in a child’s life is the most determinative factor to a child succeeding, there’s no better time to say Thank You! For the girls,

GSUSA Gold Award Scholar Mariella Dreiling We are proud to announce that Mariella has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious 2026 GSUSA Gold Award Scholarship for her remarkable Gold Award project, “Preserving the Past and Updating for the Future.” This national honor recognizes Gold Award Girl Scouts who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through projects that create measurable and sustainable impact. While a sophomore at Hays High School, Mariella completed her Gold Award which focused on historic preservation and accessibility at the Bunker Hill Historical Society Museum, helping ensure the community’s rich history will remain accessible for generations to come. She organized a fragile collection of local newspapers dating from the 1880s to the 1930s into archival storage, cleaned and reorganized display cases, and replaced faded handwritten labels to better preserve the history of museum artifacts. Mariella also created new displays, including one featuring Bibles and church records written in German. Using her German language skills,
she translated these important records and helped preserve an important piece of the area’s Volga German heritage. Mariella’s work extended beyond the museum’s collections. She helped secure three grants to fund improvements, painted the museum’s exterior sign, and helped replace a deteriorating entrance ramp with a safer, accessible ramp and handrail. To showcase the improvements, Mariella hosted a Memorial Day open house where she taught visitors how to preserve their own family heirlooms. Her work helped generate renewed interest in the museum, with attendance increasing during her project and throughout the summer. “Experiences from the Gold Award process provided me with the skills required to make positive contributions and to achieve future goals,” Mariella said. “I hope that youth will be inspired to volunteer and to preserve history.” Mariella has continued that mission by writing, illustrating and publishing two bilingual children’s books about local Volga Germans, which are being
sold by the Ellis County Historical Society as a fundraiser. She is attending Fort Hays State University to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry before transferring to the University of Kansas to pursue a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Her goal is to return to Western Kansas to practice pharmacy. From preserving the stories of generations past to preparing to serve future generations, Mariella’s leadership demonstrates the lasting impact one Girl Scout can make.

Kansas Heartland Scholars Congratulations to these remarkable Girl Scouts for being awarded scholarships in recognition of their dedication, leadership, and commitment to making a difference. The stories below highlight their inspiring achievements and the exciting paths they plan to pursue in the future.
GSKH Gold Award Scholarship & Sandy Remsberg Education Scholarship Recipient Alyssa Church Alyssa Church has been a dedicated Girl Scout for 13 years, exemplifying leadership, service, and academic excellence throughout her journey. Graduating from Thomas More Prep-Marian Jr./Sr. High School with a 4.0 GPA, Alyssa has earned her Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards while making a meaningful impact in her community through projects supporting CASA, organizing donation drives, and leading initiatives that helped local families in need. Alyssa’s achievements are numerous. She is the recipient of the Sandy Remsberg Education Scholarship, and the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland Gold Award Scholarship sponsored by Healthy Blue. For her Gold Award, Homework Buddies, Alyssa created 100 homework supply bags for low-income families. She organized a community-wide school supply drive, collecting more than 400 new school supplies and assembling bags that were distributed to each of the five elementary schools in Hays, helping students have the resources they need to succeed at home.
Beyond her award projects, Alyssa has embraced countless leadership opportunities. She attended Girl Scout camp as both a camper and a Counselor in Training and has served as president of Key Club, vice president of National Honor Society, and secretary of Future Business Leaders of America. She is also involved in theatre, forensics, varsity tennis, and served as both a student ambassador and class representative. Her dedication to serving others extends beyond her community through mission trips and volunteer work in multiple states. This fall, Alyssa is attending Fort Hays State University to major in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education. She hopes to become a preschool or elementary teacher and inspire the next generation of girls as a future Girl Scout leader.
Sandy Remsberg Education Scholarship Recipients Isabelle Mata
Hayley Zarchan
Isabelle Mata has been a Girl Scout since Kindergarten, building a strong foundation of leadership, service, and adventure throughout her journey. Isabelle earned her Bronze Award and says some of her favorite Girl Scout memories include traveling with her troop to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and camping at Spanish Peaks in Colorado. She has also demonstrated leadership by helping launch a new Daisy troop and mentoring younger Girl Scouts during her high school years at Garden City High School.
Hayley has spent 13 years as a Girl Scout, demonstrating dedication, leadership, and perseverance throughout her journey. Hayley graduated from Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School where she maintained an impressive 3.88 GPA while balancing the demands of being a competitive gymnast. During her time in Girl Scouts, she earned both her Bronze Award and Gold Award, along with countless badges, and has consistently given back through community service projects and by mentoring younger Girl Scouts.
Beyond Girl Scouts, Isabelle has been actively involved in her school and community through marching and concert band, Future Teachers Club, and by teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Her experience working as a paraprofessional in an elementary school has strengthened her passion for education while giving her valuable experience supporting students in kindergarten through fourth grade.
Hayley has also been an enthusiastic participant in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, selling cookies every year through countless booth sales and by going door-to-door in all kinds of weather. She credits Girl Scouts with helping her develop strong business skills and says the experience has shaped her into a more confident and capable young adult.
Isabelle is attending Garden City Community College while working full-time as she pursues a degree in Elementary Education. She hopes to become an elementary school teacher and continue making a positive difference in the lives of young students and in her community. Girl Scouts has helped prepare Isabelle to lead with confidence, serve others, and inspire the next generation.
Upon graduating high school, Hayley will have earned nearly 19 college credit hours and now attends the University of Tennessee at Martin to study Veterinary Technology. Her goal is to become a veterinary nurse, combining her passion for helping both people and animals while continuing to serve as a positive role model for future generations. National Council Session Our Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland delegation had an incredible week representing our council at the Girl Scouts National Council Session in Washington, DC, July 20-22. This national gathering brought together girl and adult delegates from across the country to help shape the future of Girl Scouts. Thank you to our delegates: Rolinda Sample, Patty Dengler, Allison de la Garza, Peggy Bearth, and Jeff Janssen; alternate delegates: Jen Ashcraft, Patty Zies, and Sharon Bastian; and delegate liaison, Krista Wagner.

Troop 10425 from Norton traveled to the Girl Scouts Unite event that took place following the National Council Session from July 23–25. The girls joined more than 10,000 Girl Scouts and heard from inspiring speakers, enjoyed workshops and live performances while also taking in the history and sights of our nation's capital.

Volunteer Training 2026-2027 New Leader Onboarding and Heartland Essentials
prepares new troop leaders for their leadership experience. In New Leader Onboarding, you’ll discover best practices for managing your troop and navigating the possibilities that are available for your Girl Scouts to experience. In Heartland Essentials, we will cover the policies, procedures, and guidelines that are specific to Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland. Answer questions such as: What is a troop meeting supposed to look like? How do I set up a checking account? How do I plan a field trip for my troop? Heartland Essentials is required within 3 months of starting your leadership role. Both learning paths are available on demand in gsLearn. COST: Free, no registration required.
2027 Cookie Program Basic Training is for volunteers who are
new to the role of Troop Product Manager for the 2027 Cookie Program. Plan to attend one of the mandatory trainings. All trainings are in-person only and you must attend one to participate as a troop. COST: Free, register in Campwise.

First Aid, CPR, & AED, an American Safety & Health Institute
blended course, includes an at-home study portion and an in-person class where you will practice important lifesaving skills. Participants must be physically able to perform the basic skills required for CPR. If you demonstrate achievement of the required knowledge and handson skills, you will receive a certification card valid for two years. Following the registration deadline, you will receive an email with instructions for the at-home study portion. No refunds will be issued once that email is sent. COST: $30, register in Campwise.

Outdoor Leadership teaches volunteers how to facilitate
adventures on the outdoor progression for their troop or event. During this hand-on skills course, you’ll practice and master the skills you need for both cabin and tent camping. Topics include: knots, knife safety, outdoor cooking methods, 3-pan dishwashing, fire building, health and safety procedures, and Leave No Trace.
