Take the lead and experience camp from the counselor’s perspective!
Our leadership programs allow teens in grade 9 and above to mentor younger campers and learn how rewarding it is to be camp staff. After teens complete the first Counselor-in-Training (CIT) two-week program, they can move on to the more advanced CIT II program and/or enhance their skills in our Junior Counselor (JC) program. There will be a separate lottery for Counselor-inTraining Programs, that will open January 16th. Eligible teens can enter both the regular program lottery and the CIT lottery. Please note that CITs are required to leave camp on the weekends.

Want to work at camp someday? In this fun, hands-on camp, you’ll go in-depth to develop your leadership skills in preparation to become a camp counselor. Discover your own personal leadership style as you work to identify and build on the strengths that you already possess. Get ready to build connections, make memories, learn and laugh with your fellow CITs, and lead the way for younger Girl Scouts while earning your CIT I pin! Counselor-in-Training (CIT) II
Grades: 10-11 Fee: $1,050
Continue building your leadership skills as you move another step closer to working at camp and earn your CIT II pin! Explore your strengths and passions, define your personal ethics, and get to know other future role models. Turn your dreams into reality; spend your first week in training, your second week finding your true camping passion in the units or specialty program areas, and your last week working in your favorite area. CITs are required to leave camp on the weekends.

Junior Counselor
Grades: 11-12 By Application ONLY
Requirements: Must be 16 years of age or older and completed 11t by summer. Completion of CIT I/II preferred, not required.
Ready to take your leadership experience to the next level? This pa position is the ultimate leadership experience for high school stude yet old enough to become full-time staff members. As a Junior cou you will join the camp staff team, work alongside staff, hold simila responsibilities, and inspire campers! You’ll work with the camp le staff to set your schedule, selecting weeks to work, receiving traini leading activities. Junior counselors work a range of weeks at each (usually 3-4 weeks) but still go home over the weekend. Teens cann both a CIT and junior counselor in the same summer, at the same c Junior counselors who turn 18 during the summer may be given the option to apply for a full-time staff position. Applicants will be able to indicate on their applications if they are interested in specializing in lifeguarding, archery/slingshots, boating, program, and arts & crafts (opportunities depend on the camp).
Space is limited. All junior counselor applicants will be interviewed. Placement in the program is based on experience and is at the discretion of camp directors. Teens will receive a stipend for being a Junior Counselor.

Teen Leadership Opportunities at Day & Evening Camps
Many camps offer aide-in-training (AIT) and/or aide programs (Aide), which gives Girl Scouts in grades 5 and up the opportunity to participate in leadership roles and learn valuable, hands-on leadership skills. Camp aides and AITs can earn volunteer hours towards Girl Scout Journeys, badges, or higher awards and must be available for all required training, which varies from camp to camp.
Ashgrove Adventure
Oakton, VA
AIT Fee: $290 (includes overnight)
Entering 8th grade. Applicants must download the PDF application from ashgroveadventure.org, available on January 1, 2024 and mail the completed paper application via USPS. The application must be postmarked on or before February 14, 2024 to be considered.
Aide Fee: None
Entering 9th grade. Must have completed 8th grade or the Ashgrove AIT program to be considered. Aides must complete an online application located at ashgroveadventure.org. Aides must attend Ashgrove Aide training on April 21, 2024.
Participants must be able to plan, prepare & solely lead two activitiesobserved once by AIT Leader and the other by unit adult staff. Unit adult staff will provide observations to Camp Directors.
AIT Fee: $100
Entering 8th grade. Must have previously attended Girl Scout camp.
AIT II Fee: $100
Entering 9th grade. Completed AIT 1 at Camp Crossroads.

Must have attended Camp Fairfax in a previous year. Selected AIT and Aides will be contacted by the AIT or Aide Director following lottery notification. All AITs and Aides must be trained - the date and time will be sent via email. AITs spend half the day as a camper and the other half assisting with units and centers. AITs have a pool party and can earn up to 20 service hours. Aides are assigned to a unit or center for the week of camp. Aides receive a staff gift, have a pool party and can earn up to 40 service hours.
