This morning we applaud seven exemplary leaders who have changed the rules of the game through their smarts and achievements and, in doing so, act as tremendous role models for girls. Girls need real-life role models, women and men, who defy expectations, challenge norms, see opportunities not hurdles, and take calculated risks to accomplish great things. Whatever their field, our honorees are doing just that, and we are proud to recognize them today.

What gives you confidence to make the kinds of decisions you must make at the end of the day? I pride myself in knowing my strengths and weaknesses. If I have to make a decision in an area I feel weak, I get advice from someone with strength in that area. How do you define character for today’s girls? Having the ability to identify your own path and not follow the crowd.

consulting services organization of more than 200 professional problem solvers committed to providing real-world, cost effective and executable solutions that drive profitability. The Northridge Group client roster includes a wide array of Fortune 500 companies, as well as state and federal agencies. Fauerbach keeps a laser focus on new market developments to provide strategic C-suite counsel. She prides herself in leading an organization that takes complex operational problems and, through a deep understanding of analytics and honest discussion, creates simplified and attainable business solutions. Fauerbach makes it a priority to give back to her community as well to her profession. She believes deeply in the power of education and the importance of reform, and is committed to being a catalyst for professional networking. She serves on several boards including The Goodman Theater’s Business Council and The Cradle. She also currently chairs the board for The Chicago Network, a collaborative organization of Chicago’s most distinguished professional women. She previously served as board chair for the Glenkirk Foundation. Prior to co-founding The Northridge Group, Fauerbach spent 17 years at MCI where she held leadership roles in finance, sales, consumer services and marketing. She holds a Master of Business Administration from The Lake Forest Graduate School of Management and a Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting from St. Norbert College. Therese, her husband, Jim, and their two children live in Northbrook, Illinois.

What was your greatest act of courage? Surviving the year 2009 in one piece. Started the year married, financially awesome, and with a fast growing company. Ended year divorced, nearly bankrupt, and my company was hanging on by a thread. Somehow kept things together and spent the entire year of 2010 putting my life back together. How do you define character for today’s girls? To me, character is the ability to not waiver from your convictions, even when the greatest of temptations are laid before you; all while being honest with yourself and mindful of the reasons why.

Bow Truss (a premium coffee roasting company), and the co-owner of the Strange Pelican Brewery. Kravitz is also a business mentor at the Coleman Center at DePaul University, the Knapp Center at IIT, Excelerate Labs, and The Starter League. In addition, he sits on the boards of TEDxMidwest, Entrepreneur’s Eve, and SocialCrunch. Kravitz was honored to be accepted into the Emerging Leaders Class of 2014 at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
Born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, Kravitz would eventually start a web design company out of his dorm room at Ohio State when he was 19. At 20, he met a local insurance agent with a big idea and co-founded his largest company to date, InsuranceAgents.com in 2004. InsuranceAgents.com grew to a 65 person operation and reached number 24 on the Inc. 500 before being acquired by Bankrate (NYSE: RATE) in 2012. Along the way, Kravitz also co-founded DebtHelp.com, which after less than a year and a half was acquired by Quinstreet (NASDAQ: QNST).

What personal attributes must a girl develop to succeed as a leader? Confidence in herself. The courage to innovate. Respect for everyone around you. Everyone has something wonderful to offer and give. You can learn from them. What was your greatest act of courage? Not taking the typical journey after college and cooking school. I did not end up in a renowned restaurant as everyone expected. I created one chocolate about one culture that lead to the mission of peace, love and chocolate.

Beginning in Spain under the direction of Ferran and Alberto Adria at their famed El Bulli restaurant, she draws inspiration from her experiences studying the indigenous cuisines of France, Italy, Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, China, Australia and Hawaii. From the kitchen of her Chicago apartment, Markoff has launched a veritable chocolate revolution. She is personally responsible for the conceptualization of her collections, recipe development and vision of Vosges Haut-Chocolat, and with chocolate as her medium, she encourages others to explore the diversity of cultures, artists, traditions and movements. Through her inspiration, sensual and experiential approach, unexpected ingredients and highly sophisticated methods, Markoff inspires and models innovation - taking risks and pushing the boundaries of chocolate conventions. With each chocolate collection she creates, she opens minds to new ideas and inspires a more non-judgmental and inclusive world.

What was your greatest act of courage? I’m reminded of several episodes, like the time I tamed a lion while on safari or wrestled a grizzly bear and saved a bunch of campers at Yellowstone National Park. But those are actually dwarfed by a smaller act of courage that I undertake every day, and that’s the courage to face the fear of failure. The courage to apply to the school that you don’t think you have the chance to get into … the courage to apply for the job that’s just a little out of reach … the courage to ask an investor to invest in your idea … the courage to launch a new product, to start a new business. The courage to face those fears ultimately leads to being recognized as a Smart Cookie!

focused on the education, healthcare and financial services industries. Previously, Nesbitt served as president and CEO of TPS Parking Management, LLC (dba, The Parking Spot), an owner and operator of off-airport parking facilities. He has employed a strategic approach to acquisition, development and portfolio management and has been very successful at leading teams of development, operating, marketing, accounting, and legal professionals toward the achievement of goals established to maximize returns on his investments. Nesbitt’s approach to the off-airport parking business has been heralded by industry insiders as extremely innovative and recognized in The New York Times, USA Today, Entrepreneur Magazine, and Fortune Small Business Magazine. Prior to launching the Parking Spot, Nesbitt was an officer of the Pritzker Realty Group, L.P. (PRG), an equity vice president and investment manager at LaSalle Partners and was employed by General Motors Corporation. He currently serves on the board of directors of Jones Lang LaSalle, Norfolk Southern Corporation, and is a trustee of Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art. He is a former member of The University of Chicago Laboratory School Board, former chairman of the board of the Chicago Housing Authority and a former board member of the Chicago 2016 Olympic Committee. He has been active in Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America and has served as chairman of the DuSable District of the Boy Scouts of America. Nesbitt served as treasurer of President Barack Obama’s 2012 and 2008 presidential campaigns. He has a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of Science degree and honorary doctorate from Albion College, Albion, Michigan. 11

What personal attributes must a girl develop to succeed as a leader? Being named Director of the Community Relations was a defining moment. I had no specific education or training in the field, but I knew I was going to be successful. I did not doubt my ability to do the job. I had a professional network that would serve as a valuable resource and that, by surrounding myself with compassionate and driven staff, success would follow. How do you define character for today’s girls? Character is made up of self-confidence - self-determination with a balance of knowing when to be flexible; honesty – with oneself and others; compassion - an understanding and acceptance of the uniqueness of others; conviction – the courage to believe in matters and be willing to stand up for those beliefs; wonder – being aware that there is always someone to meet, something to learn and that the world is bigger than our own personal perspective.

Biography Christine O’Reilly, senior director of community relations and executive director of Chicago White
Sox Charities, runs the team’s community outreach and charitable programs and is a primary spokesperson. O’Reilly is a South Side native and Illinois State University alum, and has been a member of the White Sox organization for 32 seasons. In 2012, the club’s charitable donations to nonprofit and social service organizations totaled more than $1.41 million. White Sox Charities, under O’Reilly’s leadership, has donated more than $17 million since its inception in 1990. She has been instrumental in the creation of the White Sox Volunteer Corps (2009), which has contributed more than 18,000 service hours from more than 4,800 White Sox fans and received the 2011 Commissioner’s Award for philanthropic excellence and the prestigious Steve Patterson Award for Excellence in Sports Philanthropy by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in 2012. O’Reilly is deeply involved in the White Sox investment in inner-city youth baseball development with $300,000 in annual funding from the team, which has impacted 900 inner-city youth on 60 teams. She has received awards from the Easter Seals of Metropolitan Chicago, Children’s Home + Aid and the Greater Chicago Food Depository, was recognized by the Jefferson Awards National Board for her exceptional leadership and devoted service to Chicago White Sox Charities and the underserved of Chicago, and was presented with the Children’s Champion Award by Beacon Therapeutic Diagnostic and Treatment Center in recognition for her efforts on behalf of vulnerable children and families.

What personal attributes must a girl develop to succeed as a leader? Organizational skills, to like working with people, and to be a visionary. I’m very proud to be honored by the Girl Scouts because it was a very important part of my success. I didn’t know that at the time but it gave me incredible organizational skills for doing projects. What was your greatest act of courage? Taking a bout with breast cancer 15 years ago, and turning it into successful medical research, especially developing MRIs for early breast cancer detection.

She has previously received awards as Marketing Statespersons of the Year (Carole and Gordon) from the Sales and Marketing Executives of Chicago; the Entrepreneurial Creativity Award (Carole and Gordon) from the Brain Research Foundation, University of Chicago; the Alumni Service Award from Northwestern University; the Lifetime Humanitarian Award (Carole and Gordon) from the Housewares Charity Foundation; the Alumni Trustee Medal from Northwestern University; the Making History Award for Distinction in Business Leadership (Carole and Gordon) from the Chicago Historical Society; and the Russel Wright Award (Carole and Gordon) from the Russel Wright Design Center. What gives you the confidence to make the kind of decisions you must make at the end of the day? Leadership requires tough decisions and at times the end result doesn’t make everyone happy. The quest is in reaching that decision. Did I utilize all the information available? Can I sleep that night knowing I treated people fairly, acted ethically and made the best choices for the ultimate goal whether that is the success and growth of my business, or something to make the community where we live better? And most importantly, did I take some time to enjoy the success and joy of my family – the true and enduring anchor in my life?

Inc., a woman and minority owned architecture and engineering firm based in Chicago. Shah founded the firm in 1998 and has pioneered its growth into a multimillion dollar engineering, construction management firm with special expertise in public infrastructure projects including transportation, aviation and facilities. Shah and her company have been recognized by Ernst and Young, the American Consulting Engineers Council, Inc. Magazine, Crain’s Chicago Business and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). As the daughter of immigrants, Shah’s commitment to public service is a driving principle in her life. She was recently appointed an inaugural chair for the Clinton Foundation’s Millennium Network, has served as chairman of the Delhi-Chicago Sister Cities Committee, and led a trade mission to India with Chicago’s Mayor Richard M. Daley. She received the congressionally recognized 2007 Ellis Island Medal of Honor, honoring those “who changed the fabric of America.” Shah’s community and civic commitments include: the Chicago Plan Commission where she serves as vice chair; board memberships at the Environmental Law and Policy Center; the Metropolitan Planning Council Resource Board; Council on Foreign Relations; and the President’s Council at the Museum of Science and Industry. Shah also serves as a trustee at Loyola University in Chicago, as well as a trustee at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and on the University of Chicago Laboratory School Alumni Association Board, and she has participated in the last five Democratic National Conventions. Shah earned her B.S. from Northwestern University, where she is recognized as a “distinguished alumni” and completed her Masters of Science in civil and environmental engineering from MIT. She also holds a certificate in management studies from Templeton College at Oxford University.
