Hall of Fame Board Approved Award The Hall of Fame Award is presented to individuals who have been an adult member for at least 25 years, have delivered services that far exceed the expectations of any position, and have had a lasting impact on the Girl Scout organization. Christine Cline Hall of Fame Christine Cline has been involved with Girl Scouts for over 30 years. She began as a troop leader for her older daughter. As her daughters aged out, she continued to volunteer in many capacities over the years. In addition to being a troop leader, Christine has also volunteered as a first aid/CPR trainer, an outdoor trainer, a Gold Award trainer, a service unit team member, council historian, district delegate, national council delegate, LEAP workshop leader,

and was a part of the 100 Anniversary Committee. Christine has a great love and extensive knowledge of the outdoors that’s valued by those who know her. Christine’s volunteer efforts have touched many people, both inside and outside of Girl Scouting. She’s always been one to say “Yes, I’ll be there!” offering support to whoever needs it. For her dedication, we welcome Christine to the GCNWI Hall of Fame!

Adrianne Coates Hall of Fame Adrianne joined Girl Scouts as a Brownie in Chicago, though she was already familiar with Girl Scouts thanks to her older sister and her mom, who led her sister’s troop. When she was a Brownie, her leader had a friend who taught the troop puppetry, including how to make their own puppets. They used their puppets to put on plays and practice selling cookies. Being able to practice allowed each girl to be ready to participate and not be afraid to ask people to buy cookies and support the troop. She became an adult member at 21 and volunteered alongside her mother’s Girl Scout troop until her mother

passed away. Over the years, Adrianne served as a leader from 1972–1987 and 1992-2020. She enjoyed being a Brownie troop leader, teaching those who were just beginning as Girl Scouts. In addition to her many years as a leader, Adrianne has also served as a part of the LEAP team, as a council trainer, and was a part of the 75 Anniversary Committee. Adrianne was previously awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Award for her work with Chicago area Girl Scouts. We welcome her to the GCNWI Hall of Fame!

Angela Foster Hall of Fame Angela began her Girl Scout journey in 1997 with the Chicago Council. She was never a Girl Scout growing up but reflects that she had a circle of women who empowered, believed, and poured into her. They encouraged her to try new things and take risks, building her confidence, and opening her eyes to different experiences. She wanted a chance to pour into other girls the way she had been poured into. So as an adult, she joined Girl Scouts as a lifetime member on day one.

Over the years, Angela has served in numerous roles, including family partnership ambassador, adult recognition team member, board member, national delegate, service unit manager, regional volunteer and so many more. As product program manager for GCNWI, Angela is a vital part of the programs, supporting volunteers and Girl Scouts as they chase their goals. She credits seeing the difference Girl Scouting makes for a girl is what keeps her here. She saw it as a volunteer and still sees it as a staff member.

Angela was a troop leader from 1997-2009. One of her favorite experiences was a weekend at White Pines Horse Ranch. The girls hadn’t had a lot of experiences beyond their neighborhoods, let alone a chance to get up close with horses and ride one. Seeing the joy on their faces was everything.

Angela has previously been awarded the Appreciation Pin and Honor Pin. For her continued dedication and support of our council and Movement, we are pleased to welcome her to the GCNWI Hall of Fame!

Marie Oskerka Hall of Fame Marie joined Girl Scouts as a Brownie in 1962 in the Evanston Council. From 1981-1996, she was a leader at St. Catherine Laboure in Glenview. During that time she also filled the roles of school organizer, service unit manager, service team registrar, and association nominating chair. Over the years and many council mergers, Marie continued to serve in various capacities, including vista manager, event coordinator, product coordinator, advisor to the service unit, member of the board of directors bylaws committee, council trainer, and member of the adult recognitions team.

Marie has been involved in Girl Scout governance, both locally and nationally. She served as a council delegate from 1993 to 1997, and as a national delegate for three national council sessions. She recently retired from district chair of GCNWI district one after serving in the role from 2009-2025. Marie continues to serve the council as a delegate-at-large. Marie has previously been recognized with numerous awards, including the Appreciation Pin, Outstanding Volunteer, Outstanding Leader, Honor Pin, Loyal Order of the Green Angels, and the Thanks Badge. We welcome her to the GCNWI Hall of Fame!

Julie Somogyi Hall of Fame Julie began her Girl Scout journey as a Brownie in the 1970’s in Kickapoo Council. Her troop went winter camping, took RV trips, and did community service. Selling Girl Scout Cookies with her grandmother was one of her fondest memories. Her grandmother loved talking to people and taught her so much about interacting with people just by role modeling what it looked like to be confident and comfortable in a sales capacity. Her adult years began in 1990 as the director of public relations for Dupage County Council, and several years later she was the director of communications and marketing for Girl Scouts of Chicago while still volunteering in DuPage as a troop leader for her daughter. Julie continued to volunteer with the troop until they graduated high school in 2011 and was awarded Outstanding Leader during this time. She reflects that she loved watching them grow up and mature into

young women who could do anything they set their minds to doing. Julie has continued to serve Girl Scouts through numerous positions at GCNWI, including vice president, member and mission engagement, chief external affairs officer, and currently as chief strategy officer. She has had numerous memorable experiences but a couple highlights include serving as a founding member of the GSUSA MarComm Network, as adult chaperone for two international destinations programs (Finland jamboree 2004 and Sangam in 2005), and serving on the steering committee for a multi-council 90 anniversary celebration in 2002 that drew 20,000 Girl Scouts and families to Navy Pier. Over the years, Julie has been a vital member of Girl Scouts and GCNWI. We are honored to welcome her to the GCNWI Hall of Fame!

Melissa Young-Bridgeforth Hall of Fame While Melissa was never a girl member, she recognized the value of Girl Scouting and wanted her two daughters to have the opportunity to join. Since there were no troops available that worked with her family’s schedule, Melissa became a volunteer with the Chicago Council in 1999, leading Daisy/Brownie Troop 197 and Junior Troop 1343 at St. Angela Elementary School. Melissa has continued to volunteer for Girl Scouts because she knows that the program provides girls with a positive environment and numerous experiences, both physically and mentally, outside of their zip code. Melissa has held a variety of other volunteer positions, including service unit manager, su registrar, product manager, council trainer, and

district delegate. Since 2010, Melissa has served as a district delegate chair for GCNWI. Plus, she was a national council delegate for both the 2020 and the 2023 National Council Sessions. Melissa is a lifetime member, Juliette Gordon Low Society Member, and a member of the recently created Green Hat Society Chapter 35 Lady Kinzie. Over the years, Melissa has received her Trainer’s Pin, Thanks Badge, and the Thanks Badge II. In addition, her service unit has been presented with the President’s Award numerous times. Girl Scouts has had the privilege of Melissa YoungBridgeforth’s service for over 25 years and is very deserving of being honored with induction into the GCNWI Hall of Fame.

Thanks Badge II Board Approved Award The Thanks Badge II recognizes an individual who has previously received the Thanks Badge and whose continued dedication to the council and Movement has provided exceptional, outstanding service, which has expanded since receiving the Thanks Badge. This is a Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) award, which is approved by the Board of Directors. Elise Gould, Skokie, IL Nancy Hackett, Romeoville, IL Linda Pote, Lockport, IL

Elise Gould Thanks Badge II Elise started her association with Girl Scouts in 1959 when she became a Brownie in Northwest Cook County Council. She continued all the way through Senior Girl Scouts, earning both her First Class and Menorah Award in 1968. While attending Northern Illinois University, she was instrumental in starting a Campus Girl Scout group. Then, she volunteered to be a leader of a Junior troop at a local elementary school. After college, Elise became the leader of another Junior troop in Skokie. Being a troop leader was not the only way Elise found to volunteer for Girl Scouts. Over the years, she has held

a variety of positions, including camp counselor, school organizer, troop coordinator, board member, national council delegate, member of the National Committee of Jewish Girl Scouts, and a council historian for GCNWI, among many other positions! The love of friendship and adventure was the key for Elise to remain involved in Girl Scouts. Over the years, she was able to expand her circle of friends with Girl Scouts from outside her community. The devotion and dedication for Girl Scouts makes Elise a very deserving recipient of the Thanks Badge II.

Nancy Hackett Thanks Badge II Nancy started her long association with Girl Scouts in 1945 as a member of Brownie Troop 7 in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, eventually going on to earn the Curved Bar. In 1956, Nancy was selected to attend the first Senior Girl Scout Round-up which was held at Highland State Park in Milford, Michigan. Nancy considers this to be one of her most cherished Girl Scout experiences. She attended the Round-up again in 1965, but that time as a volunteer. Nancy started volunteering as an assistant leader while in college. Once she graduated, she moved to Baltimore and immediately called the council there to let them know she wanted to become a leader. She continued as a troop leader for the next 35 years.

In 1980, Nancy moved to Illinois, and served as a trainer, service unit treasurer, Cadette troop leader, and older girl consultant. Nancy was a founding member of the Metro Chicagoland Girl Scout Historians in 1988. Beginning in 1998, she kept a museum of Girl Scout memorabilia in her home where she welcomed Girl Scout troops and conducted historical programs. She continues to serve as a council historian for GCNWI, helping to maintain the archives. Nancy’s extensive and productive association with Girl Scouts shows she is very deserving of receiving the Thanks Badge II.

Linda Pote Thanks Badge II Linda has been a devoted Girl Scout volunteer for over five decades. She began her association with Girl Scouts in 1955 when she became a Brownie in South Cook County Council and remained a member until her sophomore year of high school when her beloved leader passed away. She has fond memories of time at Camp Manistee, earning badges, and her Marian Medal.

Linda is currently a valued member of the GCNWI council historians team. She works diligently to preserve the history of Girl Scouts and has spent hundreds of hours organizing items for the archive. Over the years, Linda has been recognized with numerous recognitions, including the Thanks Badge and induction into the GCNWI Hall of Fame in 2023. We are pleased to award her the Thanks Badge II.

As an adult, Linda began volunteering for Trailways Council. Holding positions such as leader, day camp counselor, and board member. Linda was also the president of Trailways from 1988 to 1993 and served as a national council delegate twice. From 1994 to 2008, Linda worked for Trailways as the fund development director.

Denise Urban Thanks Badge II Denise began her Girl Scout journey in 1977 as a Brownie with Northwest Cook Council and went on to earn her Gold Award in 1989. While in college, Denise became an adult member and was a founder of the Campus Girl Scouts at the University of Illinois in 1990. After college, she became a leader for a Senior troop with Illinois Crossroads Council and has been a continuous volunteer since then. In addition to troop leader, Denise has served in numerous positions, including service unit manager, regional chair, council trainer, gold award committee member, global awareness team member, and national council delegate. Recently, she was also a member of GSUSA’s Movement Governance Advisory Team. Denise attributes Girl Scouts for making her the person she is today. It taught her how to set goals

and then work to attain them, as well as be adventurous and to try new things. It set her love for travel and provided, and continues to provide her, with wonderful friendships and connections. It also created in her a desire to serve others, which led to a career working with and for not-for-profit charitable organizations. Over the years she has been recognized previously with Outstanding Leader, Appreciation Pin, GCNWI Women of the Century, Volunteer of Excellence, the Honor pin, and the Thanks Badge. She was also recently recognized in 2026 with the Cook County Lillinois Peggy A. Montes Unsung Heroine Award for her work with her job and volunteer work for Girl Scouts. We are happy to add the Thanks Badge II to that list.

Vikki Zack Thanks Badge II Vikki began her involvement with Girl Scouts as a Brownie in 1959 in East Chicago Council, earning her First Class in 1964. She started as a volunteer in 1970 in Calumet Council by leading a troop at Morton Elementary School. However, Vikki stepped down from volunteering with that troop in 1972 when she gave birth to her daughter Anita. She returned as assistant leader when Anita was old enough to be a Brownie. Then, she took over the troop in 1980 and hasn’t looked back since. Vikki has had as many as six troops at one time and led at least 22 troops over the years.

Vikki has held numerous other volunteer positions, such as recruiter, troop organizer, service unit manager, co-camp chair, delegate, cookie chair, and fall products chair, among many others. Vikki continues to volunteer with her service unit, as a troop leader and serves as a council historian, and a member of the adult recognitions team. Vikki has been honored with the Outstanding Volunteer, Outstanding Leader, Appreciation Pin, Honor Pin, Thanks Badge, and the GCNWI Hall of Fame. Her continued dedication to the Movement certainly deserves the Thanks Badge II.

Thanks Badge Board Approved Award The Thanks Badge recognizes an individual who has provided exceptional, outstanding service that benefits the total council or entire Movement. The service is so significantly above and beyond the call of duty that no other award would be appropriate. This is a GSUSA award that is approved by the Board of Directors. Lindsay Hayden, Chicago, IL

Jane Clark Thanks Badge Jane began her Girl Scout journey as a membership specialist with Fox Valley Council around 1994. During this time, she also led a troop for migrant workers and received the Appreciation Pin. A little over 10 years later, she began volunteering with DuPage Council when she joined the Gold Award and adult recognition teams. Jane has continued to serve on these teams as the councils merged into what is now GCNWI. She finds being able to work with the girls the most rewarding and exciting part of being chair of the GCNWI Gold Award Committee. As she mentors them while they work on their Gold Award projects, she is

inspired by the topics and issues they address. She is passionate about all that they accomplish and is dedicated to helping them pursue the project they wish to complete. Jane finds it inspiring to be around young women. She believes that there is a lot of negativity in the world and finds that spending an hour with girls can help them change the world that we live in. Jane was previously named Woman of the Century in 2012, the year of the 100 anniversary of Girl Scouts founding. For her dedication to Girl Scouts, we are proud to award her the Thanks Badge I.

Lindsay Hayden Thanks Badge Lindsay first became a Girl Scout in 1992 as a Daisy, going on to complete all thirteen years, earning her Silver and Gold Award during that time. She remembers recruiting her first Girl Scout in the 4 grade when she insisted that her best friend, Fatima, join her Junior troop. They would both go on to earn their highest awards together and now co-lead GCNWI’s Cadette book club. Lindsay started her adult journey in 2005 as a lifetime member. She quickly became a troop leader and president of Campus Girl Scouts at Tulane University. Lindsay currently leads three troops across Chicago, a multi-level troop through Chicago Lights, two Senior and Ambassador Troops through a Chicago high school, and Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America (FORA). In addition, she currently serves as co-service unit manager, council trainer, and national council delegate. She also volunteers regularly to support GCNWI’s troops

that serve Girl Scouts in foster care. Previously, she has also held roles like district delegate, WAGGGS Voices Against Violence Program Lead, special events volunteer, and worked as a membership specialist for GCNWI. When reflecting on what has kept her in Girl Scouts, she shared that women in her community stepped up to lead her troops, even though some of them no longer had children in the program. They poured their time, energy, and love into her for years. She can never pay that back, but by volunteering, she can pay it forward. Lindsay also deeply values the relationships she has built with our girls, fellow volunteers, and our staff. Previously, Lindsay has been recognized with the Appreciation Pin and Honor Pin. For her outstanding service, we are so happy to add the Thanks Badge to that list.

Bonnie Batchelor 60 Years of Service

Bonnie started her Girl Scout journey in 1954 when she became a Brownie in the Chicago Council. She continued as a girl member until the end of high school, earning her Curved Bar. Her fondest memory was participating in the 1965 Girl Scout Senior Roundup in Farragut, Idaho. While in college, Bonnie saw a woman dressed in an adult Girl Scout uniform, and it occurred to that she might be able to help with a troop. She went up to the woman, and asked her if she could use some help. That’s when Bonnie became an adult volunteer as a campus Girl Scout, and she never looked back. After college, Bonnie continued as a volunteer, serving as a leader for all levels of Girl Scouts, as a council trainer, and as a service team member with various councils, including locally with Service Unit 295. In 1994, Bonnie took a staff position as membership director for Sybaquay Council. She worked for various councils for 20 years. Besides Sybaquay, she was also a staff member with Spar and Spindle Council in eastern Massachusetts, Central Texas Council, Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana Council, and Green and White Mountains Council. She had positions in membership, adult development, as chief operating officer, and her favorite, fund development. In 2014, Bonnie was inducted into the Association of Girl Scout Executive staff (AGSES) Hall of Fame at the Girl Scout convention in Utah. She also joined the GCNWI Hall of Fame in 2016.

Linda Beach

55 Years of Service Linda became a Brownie in 1958 in New Jersey with her mother as her leader. In high school, she moved to a new town, found a new troop, and continued as a Senior Girl Scout as a way to make new friends. These friendships were the most important part of her troop experience in high school. While in high school, she was an exchange student in Columbia and her exchange sister was also a Girl Scout, so she was able to join meetings and activities with their troop in Columbia. She earned her First Class Pin in 1964. In college, she reached out to the local council, Drifting Dunes, to see if there were any activities where she could help. She was asked to help at the local day camp. She served in several positions, including as a unit leader, director, and assistant director for many years. She has been involved with several troops over the last 50 years, stepping in as a leader or assistant leader where needed. She started her daughter’s troop in 1982 and stayed with that troop through their high school graduation. Her most memorable moment as an adult was seeing her daughter earn her Gold Award. Although a close second was her trip with her mother in the early 1980’s to see Our Chalet in Switzerland. Linda has held many positions over the years, including leader, assistant leader, cookie mom, day camp director, Gold Award mentor, council delegate, and service team member for SU312. She continues to serve as CIT instructor for their day camp, as well as helping to plan and host special events.

Ellen Weber

55 Years of Service

Ellen started as a Brownie around 1956 in South Cook County Council. She stayed in Girl Scouts during high school, attending a Girl Scout Roundup in Idaho for two weeks. While in college, she participated in Campus Girl Scout. Girl Scouts was important to Ellen because she made friends in her Brownie troop. She is still friends with three of the girls, and her Senior Girl Scout troop still gets together to keep in touch. Ellen became a leader for her daughter’s troop, which started as Daisies. Over the years, 11 out of 12 of the girls earned their Silver and Gold Award. Ellen was also the vice president for South Cook County Council for six years. She then went on to be on the board of directors. Her biggest accomplishment during this time with South Cook GS Council was working to save Camp Palos from being sold. Over the years, she also taught outdoor skills, learned to sing, and play guitar. She credits Girl Scouts with giving her the courage and confidence to speak up. She used this skill as a delegate in situations where she was speaking to strangers at meetings about topics she felt were important.

Linda has been awarded the Carla Urbain award, Shining Star, Appreciation Pin, and Thanks Badge and joined the GCNWI Hall of Fame in 2012.

Madelon Koerner 50 Years of Service

50 Years of Service

Madelon joined as a Brownie in 1954 with Lonetree Council. She continued as a girl member through Intermediates. Then in 1976, she started her first volunteer commitment as leader for the Chicago Council. She was a leader or co-leader at all levels, except for Daisies, for over 20 years.

Diana started her Girl Scout journey as a Brownie for two years with her mom as her leader. She became involved again in the 1970’s when, as a young professional, she joined the Girl Scouts of Chicago Junior Board. The Junior Board did outreach across the city and lots of fun activities together.

Over the years, she served in almost every capacity in her service unit, including troop coordinator, product sale manager, coordinator, treasurer, secretary, family partnership coordinator, and council delegate. Madelon also became a trainer, the role she loved the most. Encouraging adults to take on the responsibility of a troop leader was her heartfelt ambition. She would emphasize the important role they played in the future lives of the many girls they would meet.

When Diana’s daughter was Girl Scout age, she started three troops. These troops had pairs of moms that ran a month of program and then switched to another pair of moms the next month.

In 2002, Madelon became a membership director for sybaquay council. She later became the director of product sales and held this position through the merging of four Illinois councils that resulted in Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois. She retired in 2014. Madelon has been recognized for her service with all board-approved awards throughout her volunteer career, including Thanks Badge II and GCNWI Hall of Fame. She is a member of the Juliette Gordon Low Society and a lifetime member.

Diana became board president of the Chicago Council from 1983-1985 and ex-officio 1986. When Chicago Girl Scouts celebrated the 75 anniversary with a parade on State Street, Diana was on the stage, celebrating the hard work it took to make the event happen. After that, she took a break from Girl Scouts until the 1990’s when she received a call from GSUSA asking her to be on the national board nominating committee. Diana shared that she learned so much more about the history of Girl Scouts in that position. During that time, she traveled to Edith Macy for meetings, the national office in New York, and to the birthplace of Girl Scouts in Savannah, Georgia.

Joyce Maslanka 50 Years of Service

Joyce first joined Girl Scouts as a Brownie in Chicago. Her leaders created a wonderful year-round experience for the troop. She remembers one year they planted flowers at the convent for the nuns which started her joy of gardening. One of Joyce’s fondest memories was tent camping as a Cadette. She enjoyed meeting other people from other schools and spending time with her leaders who were so outgoing. Joyce stayed involved as an adult, raising her hand to be the service unit registrar and do Fall Product and Cookies for her service unit, which she is still involved with to this day. Over the years, she also led Brownies and Juniors. Her favorite experience with her troops was going on their first adventure to try horseback riding. As a leader, you had to be brave for your girls!
