SANTA AGUEDA

SANTA ÁGUEDA

On February 4th, the eve of Santa Agueda, dozens of choirs walk through the streets of Bilbao and many Basque towns, singing age-old verses in honour of the saint. This tradition remains very much alive, having spread from the rural settings to cities throughout the Basque Country. Worship for the Sicilian Santa Águeda de Catania is deeply rooted in the Basque region, dating back to the many pilgrims who crossing this land on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Anyone visiting Bilbao on this day is bound to run across groups of children and adults singing songs and asking for money, which nowadays is often donated to charitable causes.

“CELEBRATION” OF FERNANDO BOTERO AT THE BILBAO FINE ARTS MUSEUM 10|08|12 • 01|20|13

F

ernando Botero (Medellín, Colombia, 1932) is the best known of Latin American artists from the second half of the 20th century still active today. Coinciding with his 80th birthday, this exhibition pays tribute to the career of a painter, draughtsman and sculptor who has developed his own, instantly recognisable style, and who celebrates a remarkably vivid, vital reality through the exaltation of volume and colour. One of the most important anthological exhibitions of the artist’s career, Fernando Botero: Celebration includes 80 works from the last 60 years. All but one of the works are paintings, on display in the Museum’s BBK gallery; the other is a huge sculpture in bronze, Horse with Bridles, from 2009, sited in the city’s Gran Vía opposite the head offices of the savings bank sponsoring the show. A larger version of the exhibition closed on 10 June at Mexico City’s Palace of Fine Art, where it was seen by around 250,000 people. Botero was intimately involved in the organization of the show, curated by his daughter Lina Botero, who chose and distributed the works, most of which come from the

painter’s private collection, in eight galleries to create a theme-based overview of the artist’s 60-year career. Lina Botero has written the keynote essay for the catalogue, which also includes contributions from the late Carlos Fuentes and the 2010 Nobel Prize winner for Literature Mario Vargas Llosa, together with five short stories written and illustrated by Botero in the 1980s.

F

On the walls of Venta Laperra are cave paintings dating back more than 25,000 years, the oldest in the Basque Country. Pozalagua offers visitors a rare and amazing sight: the highest concentration of bizarrely shaped stalactites in the world. Only in Australia can you find anything like it. The cave was accidentally discovered when workmen set off an explosion at the nearby Dolomitas del Norte quarry in 1957. The quarry was mined until 1976 and caused repairable damage to the cave, including cracks that caused the lake inside to dry up.

Nonetheless, a visit to the cave is still an unforgettable experience. The columns, flowstone, stalactites and stalagmites inside the cave are most spectacular in the so-called 'Versailles Room', a space measuring 125 m long, 70 m wide and 15 m from floor to ceiling. These geologic features have developed through the millennia at a rate of 1 cm every 100 years, with very steady ambient conditions: a temperature of 13째C and 100% humidity. Two unique animal species only a few millimetres long have also been found at Pozalagua, an isopod and a springtails (Collembola). Pozalagua is just over 50 km from Bilbao. The cave

is wheelchair accessible and can be visited on a 45-minute guided tour. To book a tour or check the opening hours, which vary depending on the season, visitors should contact the Karrantza tourism office: Phone: 946 806 928 / 696 446 301 Email: turismo@karrantza.org Only a few metres from the Versailles Room is Torca del Carlista, the largest cave chamber in Europe and the second largest in the world. It is 500 m long, 230 m wide and 125 from floor to ceiling. But since it is difficult to access this cave, it is only open to experienced speleologists.

ELANTXOBE, AL ABRIGO DE UN COLOSO

A

ELANTXOBE, IN THE SHADOW OF A GIANT

S

heltered by Cape Ogoño, the small protected area of Elantxobe provided safe anchorage for seafarers who settled here in the early 16th century. Until 1858 the fishing village belonged to the neighbouring municipality of Ibarrangelua. Ogoño, an impressive limestone outcropping rising abruptly from the sea, marks the highest point along the coast of Bizkaia. The cliff wall separates Elantxobe from the beautiful beach of Laga, located to the east of the Gernika estuary within the limits of the Urdaibai Nature Reserve. On the east flank of Ogoño, the narrow winding streets of Elantxobe – too steep for vehicles – spill from the top of this delightful town over 150 meters down to its small harbour nestled below. From Gernika the main road follows the right bank of the Urdaibai estuary, offering two ways to Elantxobe, one leading to the upper part of the

village and the other to the harbour. The piers that embrace the harbour were built in the mid17th century, and the seawall that protects it from the raging waters of the Bay of Biscay is more recent. At one point, the fishing industry in Elantxobe was quite active, with eight canning facilities in operation in the 19th century. Today the harbour is used mainly for recreational purposes, although the village and its people are still steeped in seafaring tradition.

The town's main street, Calle Mayor, zigzags up from the harbour between houses that cling to the hillsides like ivy, in a somewhat miraculous architectural feat. In fact, unlike most buildings, which have a single entrance with stairs leading to the upper floors, here the doorway to one floor is often down the street from the doorway to the next. Located in the upper part of the village is the church of San Nicolás de Bari, built on donations from sailors and seafarers. Beside the church is a small square where a turntable has been installed to enable buses and larger vehicles to turn around and head out of town. At one end of the square a viewing platform affords spectacular sea views. Only 50 km from Bilbao, Elantxobe is an excellent starting point for hikes including the route up to the top of Ogoño with its sweeping views of the coastline, or for visiting the beautiful beaches of Laida and Laja in the Urdaibai Nature Reserve.

THE BIDEBARRIETA LIBRARY, A PALACE FOR READING

A

t the beginning of Bidebarrieta Street sits the beautiful facade of the Bidebarrieta Central Library. The building was constructed in 1890 to house El Sitio, a recreational and cultural centre founded to honour the memory of the Cuerpo de Auxiliares, a corps of auxiliary soldiers who defended Bilbao under siege during the Carlist wars. The publications at the time of the building's inauguration described it as nothing less than spectacular. Bilbo architect Severino de Achúcarro opted for an eclectic dressed-stone facade for this elegant majestic building, drawing inspiration from English clubhouses. A large rose window sits over the impressive main entrance flanked by a magnificent staircase decorated with delicate stained glass crafted in Antwerp. The modernist style building has a semibasement, two storeys and a dormer attic. When the building was originally designed for El Sitio, it

featured several rooms, a restaurant, cafe, kitchens, gymnasium, hairdresser's, dance hall and library, and was fitted with some of the most sophisticated equipment of the day. It also had an elevator, telephone, electric lighting and a heating system designed by Verney of Paris. The vaulting in the grand hall on the second floor was decorated with frescos painted by Anselmo Guinea and José Echenagusia. Trained in Paris and Rome, Anselmo Guinea was a pioneer in bringing new styles already in vogue in the rest of Europe. His work can be seen at the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao and at a number of public buildings in Bizkaia. Some of Guinea's most outstanding works include his 1882 painting Juan Zuria jurando defender la independencia de Bizkaia at the Assembly House in Gernika, a work from 1900 in stained glass called Alegoría de Bizkaia at the Palacio Foral in Bilbao and the stained-glass windows also at the Palacio Foral. Echenagusia, the first teacher of Ignacio Zuloaga, was an academicist painter and

follower of a style called préciosité. He was one of the first of his kind to gain international recognition. Charles Dickens was the proud owner of one of his works. Echenagusia was also responsible for the famous mural paintings in the Throne Room of the Palacio Foral Juramento de los Fueros and La pacificación. Unfortunately, Echenagusia's paintings that once decorated the ceiling of the great hall at the Bidebarrieta library were destroyed during the Franco dictatorship because they contained allegorical representations of freedom and the Tree of Gernika. After the Civil War, this splendid building was commandeered by the Franco regime, owing to the liberal nature of El Sitio. In 1956 it came under the ownership of the City of Bilbao, which adapted it for use as a library and municipal archive. The building was seriously damaged in the 1983 floods and had to be closed for five years while undergoing reconstruction. It finally reopened in 1988 to be used exclusively as the Bilbao Municipal Library.

BILBAO ESTÁ DE CINE

A

internationally acclaimed architects including Pelli, Gehry, Isozaki and Moneo, has catapulted Bilbao into the international limelight. As a result, the city has carved out a unique niche in the location catalogue for film producers and advertising agencies. Every year over fifty films and commercial photo shoots take place in Bilbao, such as the opening scene from the James Bond film “The World Is Not Enough, music videos by wellknown artists including Mariah Carey, and a

number of advertisements for cars and leading fashion labels. The fact is that Bilbao is scattered with fascinating corners and intriguing images that lend a sense of excitement and modernity to a whole range of products. Given the growing importance of this activity in recent years, in 2006 the Bilbao Town Hall created the Bilbao Film Commission. Attached to the Department of Culture, the commission coordinates with the city's office on the use of public space to help arrange per-

mits and other logistics and convert the streets of Bilbao into temporary film settings. There is no question that buildings such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Iberdrola tower and the metro stations designed by Norman Foster are a huge draw for film shoots. But the entire area around the river and the contrast between the stunning buildings and streets of the 19th-century city and Bilbao's mediaeval old town also create a dramatic backdrop for the film and advertising industry.

MERCADO DE LA RIBERA: PUESTA DE LARGO

E

THE RIBERA MARKET: DRESSED UP TO THE NINES

T

he Ribera is the heir to the market that has run continually since the 14th century at the very heart of Bilbao, only a few metres from the place where the building reborn today in all its splendour opened its doors in 1929. Ever since the middle ages, in the ancient Plaza Vieja, framed by the San Antón Church, access to the streets of the Old Town and the former City Hall, wares would be displayed by traders who with time installed a make-shift roof to protect themselves and their customers from the inclemency of the weather. In the late 19th century, a modern building was built to suit the new times, with an iron structure partially enclosed by glass. That glass-enveloped market exhausted users with its greenhouse heat, not only making it uncomfortable for the traders and their customers, but causing the wares on sale to off very quickly. Eventually, a sprinkler system was installed in the roof to keep it cool. Today’s Ribera Market building was opened in 1929. This rationalist construction occupying

10,000m² and boasting an art-deco facade was designed by the architect Pedro de Ispizua and is the biggest covered market in Europe. For almost a century, the Ribera Market has played a central part in city life, a witness to changes and adversities like the 1983 floods that washed the building away. Despite the fact that it was later rebuilt, in 2008 a technical survey revealed that the market structure was seriously damaged. Tiered reconstruction work therefore began in summer 2009. During the 3 years of its reconstruction, the market continued to function normally. The first stage involved re-construction of the wing alongside San Antón Church. Once completed and re-opened in 2010, the second stage began on the opposite wing.

The new market is spacious, modern and comfortable and fully meets the standards of hygiene required by traders and users. There are 59 stalls, the same number as when the work started. Today, however, each floor is no longer dedicated to a family of products. Instead, fish, meat, poultry and vegetables can be found on both levels. Twelve stalls are set aside for people from the surrounding villages who come into town to sell their goods and milk dispensing machines have been installed. The former problems of access have been eliminated with new mechanical installations between the floors of the market. Today the stalls look better and are more comfortable to use thanks to heated flooring and lasting, easy-to-clean materials. Specific lighting has been installed for each type of product and the building has recovered the original red colour of its facade. Now that work on the Market has been completed, it has 1,400 m² of free indoor space for new uses and activities to inject added life to Bilbao’s emblematic enclave.

A competition was set up for the purpose of creating this new brand. A total of 84 ideas were presented, ten of which were shortlisted by a technical committee. The institutions in charge of promoting the initiative wanted to open the process up to the public. As a result, nearly 13,500 people cast their vote for their favourite entry, which accounted for 20% of the final score assigned by the

Taking part on behalf of the Bizkaia Town Council, were Imanol Pradales, councilman for Economic Promotion, and Gabino Martínez de Arenaza, general director for Tourism and International Outreach. The criteria used in evaluating the proposals were based on communication infrastructure,

the technical and artistic quality of the brand, the message behind the slogan and ideas for future implementation. The competition carried a total cash prize of €40,000. Under the rules, the prize money was to be allotted to two winning ideas, €30,000 for the logo and €10,000 for the slogan, which would then be combined to create the campaign for the new brand. The winner of the logo went to the media and communications agency Ros y Etcétera, while the idea for the winning slogan came from José Gil-Nogués Villén. The brand team will be tasked with designing a complete corporate identity manual, specifying the colours, typesetting and printing, as well as the different media applications, and advertising and communication efforts, such as street marketing, merchandising, newspaper advertisements, posters, Internet and social networks.

F

rom time immemorial man has had a fascination with ball games. Evidence of ballmaking has been found in early civilisations around the world, from South America to Asia to Europe to Australia. Using whatever materials were easily available, people would then invent activities or games, with or without rules, for the purpose of competition or recreation. There is proof in the Mediterranean region that Greeks and Romans were already playing a variety of ball games and that as the Roman civilisation expanded, so did their practice of handball. Ball games became deeply rooted in the Basque culture early on. In fact, two disc-shaped funeral stelae dating from 1629 and 1784 discovered in the towns of Garruze and Banka are engraved with allegorical figures, showing the social status enjoyed by Basque ballplayers, or pelotaris. A number of variations of Basque handball, or pelota, are still played today. The different games are defined

by the type of court (fronton) they are played in (trinquete, short fronton or long fronton) and the type of hurling tool used (mono, paleta, pala corta, xare or cesta punta). Each variation has its own special attraction and requires a specific skill on the part of the player.

in a hands-on experience with the sport, at 11 o'clock on Saturdays the Gernika Jai-Alai opens its doors to learners. Students from the local school of cesta punta come here to practice, and visitors are allowed to come in and watch the pelotaris in action.

Cesta punta is by far the most spectacular, offering spectators a show of acrobatics and ferocity. The player has to catch the ball momentarily in the curved wicker basket, and hurl it toward the front wall at speeds that can reach over 300 km per hour.

As a guest, you will then be invited to step onto the court accompanied by an instructor from the school. The teacher will show you how to strap the wicker basket to you wrist and show you some of the basics of the game, followed by a half hour of supervised practice. It's an unforgettable experience.

This thrilling visual spectacle has travelled beyond our borders and is now played in a number of South American countries, as well as the United States and the Philippines, where it is commonly known as jai alai, which in Basque literally means 'merry festival'. The legendary fronton in the town of Gernika is also called the JaiAlai. The fronton in Markina, locally known as 'the university', and the Gernika Jai-Alai, are unquestionably the two sanctuaries of this sport. For anyone interested

"WE ARE STANDARD”, FROM GETXO TO THE WORLD

B

efore releasing their first album, We Are Standard had already won a number of prizes for their quality demos, arousing the interest of record labels and the media alike.

The album was a small step forward in terms of recording, but it was their live performances which were most clearly boosted by it, with more than 150 gigs from a debut album. These gigs included trips to Europe to a number of festivals and a record release in France and the USA. In Spain We Are Standard also received the prize from Radio Nacional de España, Ojo Crítico (Critical Eye), for the best band of 2006. Their second album led to We Are Standard winning Best Spanish Band at the MTV Awards, something unusual for an indie group, collecting the award at a ceremony in Berlin in the purest MTV style. The record received mixed reviews, but once again the band’s live performances were thrilling, keeping them on the road for more than two years and leading to appearances at a number of festivals in

America. More prizes for their videos followed (as well as a nomination for the Premios de la Música in Spain) and a great deal of ink has been spilled over those gigs. We Are Standard carry on touring, moved by one goal - to connect with the public and get people dancing. Several music magazines have given the band front cover billing, such as Mondosonoro and Inspiral pop, both of which understand their message and mentality. One of the group’s most celebrated concerts

took place at the FIB Festival in 2009, where they rounded off events on the main stage following Oasis, striking up a clear rapport with the public. They are also responsible for a soundtrack of an airplane decorated by Custo. They continued their success in 2010; they were caught up in live performances and the production of a third video, as well as a remix album with artists such as John Talabot, CFCF, David E. Sugar, In Flaganti, etc… The album was released in the UK, where reviews by music magazines like The Clash, Music Week and Mixmag highlighted its loco dance values. The record has also found a place on the shelves and digital stores of Japan and other European countries. At the end of 2011 came “Great State” (5 new songs), a rave with guitars, dance-hit rhythms with the smell of classic riffs, eternal melodies and arrangements that are multiplied by a thousand, presented with a live horn section and a gospel choir. They have also now been published in the UK where media sources such as Q-Magazine, the Guardian, Metro and Nylon mark them as bears of the new Spanish pop scene.

ABAO, 61 YEARS DEDICATED TO OPERA ABAO, 61 AÑOS DE DEVOCIÓN A LA ÓPERA

T

he Bilbao Friends of the Opera Association (known by its Spanish initials, ABAO), kicked off its 61st season in style last September with a rich and varied programme. Moreover, this is the seventh year for the ABAO's ambitious project featuring Giuseppe Verdi's entire operatic output. For 61 years, season after season, the ABAO has offered an opera programme acclaimed both nationally and internationally, drawing as many as 70,000 spectators a year. Verdi's La Traviata opened this year's edition of Tutto Verdi, which this season will also feature another two of the Italian composer's works: Un Giorno di Regno and Les Vêpres Siciliennes, the latter of the two slated for February. Four other works are also on the roster this season. The first is a premiere production of the 20th century opera Kròl Roger, created by Michal Znaniecki, and first brought to the ABAO stage in November this year. In February 2013 the year will open with the immortal repertory piece Tosca by Giacomo Puccini, starring Violeta Urmana, Massimo Giordano – in a debut performance with the ABAO – and Falk Struckmann. Gaetano Donizetti's María Stuarda will

be presented in April and Puccini's La Bohéme will bring the Opera season to a close in May. However, the ABAO also organises activities designed to foster an appreciation for opera among the general public and young people in particular. Activities include Opera Berri, a programme designed to offer singers under the age of 26 specially priced tickets for opera performances; an educational programme which has just completed its 20th year, offering events and workshops for schools; and concerts featuring the best voices of the day. Last but not least, ABAO Txiki, a special opera season geared for kids, will feature five concerts this season: Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf; A Christmas Carol, an opera based on the Dickens classic with music by Iñigo Casalí; in February The Superbarber of Seville, a funny and entertaining adaptation of the Rossini classic performed by El Tricicle; in March The Arab Princess, a unique ABAO project which pays a much-deserved tribute to the music of Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga; and in June, The Emperor's New Clothes, a delightful adaptation of the Charles Perrault story with music by Iñigo Casalí. A season chock-full of music, featuring 16 performances for the whole family and six programmes for 160 schools and 16,500 students.

L

A

ARKOTXA, A NEIGHBOURHOOD FULL OF PASSION

O

nly ten kilometres from Bilbao, the town of Zaratamo, population just over 1500, is located at the confluence of the

Ibaizabal and Nerviรณn rivers, under the shadows of Mts. Upo and Artanda.

Although Zaratamo actually lies within the Bilbao metropolitan area, the greater part of the municipality sits on higher ground and maintains an essentially rural flavour, complete with beautiful beech woods and meadows, and

bird's-eye views of the city. In stark contrast to this landscape dotted with farmhouses in small villages, the lower area in the vicinity of Arrigorriaga is predominantly industrial. Every Easter for the past 50 years, members of the Gaztek Abi cultural association of Arkotxa, one of the neighbourhoods of Zaratamo, have staged a re-enactment of the Passion of Christ.

In early autumn every year, some 100 local actors begin rehearsing scenes from Christ's trial, crucifixion and resurrection in an effort to keep the tradition of this re-enactment alive. After Balmaseda, the Arkotxa Passion of Christ is the second longest-standing in Bizkaia. The passion play of Jesus in his final hours gets underway in the church of San Vicente Mรกrtir de Iraragorri in the afternoon of Maundy Thursday with a re-enactment of the Last Supper. On the following day, Good Friday, at 11 o'clock in the morning in the church square,

the actors stage scenes such as Jesus being brought to face judgement before Annas and Caiaphas and Judas receiving money for his betrayal. The next stage is Christ Carrying the Cross on his shoulders to his crucifixion. The route winds up to the top of a nearby hill in the neighbourhood of Santa Bรกrbara. Although resources are limited, the delightful homemade sets and props, combined with the natural setting and the passion demonstrated year after year by the local actors, artists and public, make this a must-see event filled with emotion.

BILBAOARTE: A WELLSPRING OF CREATIVITY

T

he art collections and exhibitions on display at the various museums in Bilbao offer visitors extraordinary insight into some of the most relevant figures in the history of art.

But before gaining recognition, many talented artists were forced to make sacrifices and endure financial hardship in the early years of their artistic careers. For this very reason, in 1998 the city of Bilbao's Department of Culture created BilbaoArte, a centre comprising 3500 m² of space spread over four storeys. The building houses an exhibition hall that can be used for any type of artistic presentation, from the traditional to the avant-garde, including installations, projections, performances, and the like; 12 studio spaces to use for developing artistic projects; engraving and silk-screening workshops, digital imaging, sculpture, photography, a film set, and all of them equipped with the latest tools of the trade; a conference room; rooms for the realisation of projects; and a library/cafeteria. The centre therefore offers ideal working conditions for young artists to be able to develop their creative work with all the means necessary for modern artistic practice. In short, it is space for creating art. BilbaoArte also offers young artists grants for the development of artistic projects and courses, seminars and conferences led by artists of international acclaim. Moreover, BilbaoArte is a common ground for the creation of art. To this end, it offers a program of exhibitions by young artists, a series of open studio sessions, an artist exchange programme with other centres, as well as promoting exhibitions in other European countries. The centre also provides artistic advice on the development of government-sponsored art projects. This centre for contemporary art is housed in the former Urazurrutia schoolhouse, located on the eponymous street in Bilbao's La Vieja district. The main aim of BilbaoArte is to promote outstanding professionalisation among young creators, thus achieving high technical levels and making available modern infrastructures for artistic practices within the art community.

IÑAUTERIAK, TIEMPO DE CARNAVAL

C

IÑAUTERIAK, TIME FOR CARNIVAL

H

e month of February ushers in the sights and sounds of Carnival, whether on the busy streets of Bilbao or in the towns

and villages of Bizkaia. Prohibited during the Franco era, the celebration of Carnival in Spain lapsed into a deep lethargy, even though many towns had been practising deeply-rooted local Carnival traditions for centuries. While some of the traditions have fallen into oblivion, today many towns have pumped new life into the festivities. In Bilbao Carnival kicks off with the trial of Farolin and Zarambolas, two faces of the typical Bilbao character – naive boastfulness and imperturbability. Two public figures are chosen by the Carnival groups, or comparsas, to play the roles at the public prosecution. Saturday of Carnival is the biggest and most spectacular day, with street bands, concerts and the comparsas parading through the streets of the city. Outside the urban environment, Carnival is celebrated with particular vitality and humour, particularly in some of the coastal towns, where often times any excuse is a good one to wear a costume. In Euskera, Carnival is generally called iñauteriak, although in some places, it is also known as aratosteak. In Lekeitio, Ondarroa and Mundaka, the festivities have a special charm and everyone from the youngest to the oldest members of the community takes part. In Ondarroa the fiesta gets under way with the arrival of Lantzoi (the Basque word

for a young needlefish) and ends on Mardi Gras or Shrove Tuesday, with the burning of the adult needlefish, or Akula, whose ashes are then thrown into the sea. The people of Zalla have a similar tradition, but use a trout instead. Ç A number of towns, such as Durango and Ermua, keep the ancient tradition of the bear very much alive during Carnival. A person dressed as a bear playfully chases young children and scares away evil spirits. Perhaps the most colourful and longest-standing Carnival celebration in Bizkaia can be experienced in the coastal town of Mundaka. The fiesta is known as Atorrak (group of men) eta Lamiak (group of women). All of the men wear a kind of white tunic, except for the leader, who wears formal dress. The women all dress in

black. The fiesta begins with a songsung by the atorrak, followed by a procession led by a group of txistularis (flute players). As the procession makes its way through the streets, the Atorrak and the Lamiak sing verses satirizing an event that has taken place during the year. The retinue has a repertory of nearly 50 verses and canticles. An ancestral celebration also takes place in Markina-Xemein. On Carnival Sunday, the young dantzaris – (dancers) take to the streets performing the traditional zahagi-dantza or dance of the wineskin. This is one of the most traditional dances of the Basque Carnival. The frightening bear also figures in the MarkinaXemein comparsa. Alongside his tamer, the bear frightens off the evil spirits and gives the children a good scare.

V.B.- Siempre he tenido muchas inquietudes. He bailado; la música. However, among her more astounding feats since she first burst onto the triathlon scene in 1988 are having debuted at the tender age of 16 in the 1991 World Triathlon Championships in Australia, where she was the youngest athlete in the competition; being the only athlete to have won the titles of Junior and Supreme Champion of Spain in the Biathlon and Triathlon in the same year (1994); having obtained medals in a Biathlon and Triathlon in the same year ( 1997 in Gernika and Nice), and being Spanish Juvenile, Junior and Supreme Champion in the Biathlon and Triathlon, and in the Sprint and Olympic distances. In these 25 years of competition she has repeatedly won competitions at the European championships, the world championships, and half ironman and ironman races all over the world. But perhaps her most gratifying feat is her four years in a row ranked among the top ten winners of the Hawaii Ironman, the star event and oldest of its kind in the world, where she came 3rd in 2009. For all of the above, Virginia was named BEST SUPREME TRIATHLETE of the 20th century by the Spanish Triathlon Federation. BBT: How did you start in sport, and why the triathlon? Virginia Berasategui : I’ve being doing sport since the age of 3, I come from a family that loves sport. My father was a swimmer and marathon runner and was swimming trainer at the Bilbao sports club; that’s why I started swimming. Later I was lucky that at school they had good physical education trainers – not in the gym though, it makes me really angry that they want to apply cuts to the

BBT: It is an extremely hard sport that requires not only great qualities, but also the capacity for extraordinary sacrifice. Virginia Berasategui: I believe we’re all born with some kind of talent. Physical qualities, a gifted mind for maths or science. I my case, I think I’ve always been unflinching in my love for sport and the will to excel. I have always worked hard at everything I do, whether it’s sport or studying. I’d always stick in there until I had done whatever task I’d set myself. BBT: Is it a question of temperament? Virginia Berasategui: Yes, I think it’s my nature, although I’ve had my moments, because when you’re a teenager and have to follow a strict discipline, always with my parents, training, and doing a sport like triathlon, it’s not always easy. Looking back it feels great; I’ve reaped all sorts of achievements and acknowledgements, like being named Illustrious Citizen of Bilbao, attention from the media, and the triathlon is better known today. BBT: It is precisely your achievements that have drawn that recognition to a minority sport

BBT: What is your work routine? Virginia Berasategui: Well right now I’m up to my ears in work because I have to do everything myself: my website, Facebook, Twitter, manage my contracts, organise my travel arrangements, attend to all the commitments required by the relationship with my sponsors, attend to the media. I’d love to have a contract that covers all that and only take care of the sports side, but I can’t and I can’t complain because I get by, but it does take a lot of time. It would be perfect to spend 8 hours training and then take the necessary time off to rest, but I have to gnaw away at my personal time to find the hours I need for these other things which, on the other hand, have also earned me contacts and enriching relations. Anyway, I usually train in the morning – swimming and cycling for example, and again in the afternoon – which may be in the gym with weights – depending on the time of year and the competitions that are coming up. BBT: This is a hard sport, but not only because of the effort required. There are only a very few women athletes in your speciality, don’t you miss having a team to share your experience with, or at least other people who do the same sport? Virginia Berasategui: Yes, it’s true. For example, I think swimming is a hugely difficult sport. Getting into the pool at 6 in the morning and again in the afternoon to spend long hours training. But if you have team-mates you establish a relationship of complicity. In my case I have sometimes gone out

41 INTERVIEW

to train on the bike with guys and it didn’t feel like training because we had fun. But anyway, I also enjoy my own company, even in my spare time. I like going to the cinema alone or buying CDs or designing a training route for myself, going off to the ‘Balcony of Bizkaia’ and losing myself on paths I’ve never been on before. BBT: What’s your next challenge? Virginia Berasategui: I always say that the hardest thing isn’t to win; it’s to stay up there. I’m 37 and it gets harder all the time. You notice the cold more and it becomes harder to get into the pool. You have to find challenges and events that excite you. I won the world championship, I’ve won European championships, for 4 years running I was in the Hawaii Ironman top 10, and now I’m more attracted to a competition that, while perhaps not one that receives most media attention, takes place in a perfect setting: the Alpe D’Huez. The swimming part is in a lake, down in the valley; then there is a bike race up into the mountain which I particularly like because my physical characteristics make me a climber, and lastly, running at the top. BBT: What till now have been your hardest and most gratifying moments? Virginia Berasategui: There’s been a bit of everything, the 4 years running in the Hawaii Ironman top 10, something that no other woman had ever achieved; or 2009 when I was third in Hawaii and won all of the other races I competed in; but as I said, the most difficult part is staying up there and in the last two years I have suffered badly from a very painful foot injury, just putting it on the ground is really sore, but even so I landed 4th position in Hawaii in 2010. Many people said they’d never seen anyone look so happy to win 4th position. It wasn’t my best cycling result, which is my strongpoint, and when I got off the bike and started running I felt downhearted. However, I started to set myself little challenges with every step – to catch up with someone else, to pass a rival who was just ahead of me – and I eventually shook off the gloom to arrive 10th. I was moved by the emotion and pride my mother said she’d felt watching me on television as I got over the pain and downheartedness. Few things have given me as much satisfaction as the way I overcame my psychological situation in that race.

BBT: Does such demanding discipline leave you time for anything else? Virginia Berasategui: I’ve always had different interests. I used to dance, music. Finally I had to leave it to dedicate myself full time to this tremendously demanding activity. Perhaps that’s which I’m so interested in forms of cultural expression. I’d like to think that what I do is also

a form of art, the way I express myself, that’s why I like all forms of artistic expression: music, literature, dance, I love the cinema... She’s known as an Ironwoman, but Virginia Berasategui is also a sensitive, warm and charming person who is moved when a fan interrupts our chat to say how much she admires her.

ENEKO ATXA, BRILLO DE ESTRELLAS

L

THE GOOD LIFE

ENEKO ATXA, TWINKLING STARS

T

he principal aim of cooking is to satisfy an essential human physiological need. But in the Basque Country it represents much, much more; here, cooking

is an enormously important part of the culture where eating is akin to a religion that brings devotees together round a table with the family, in one of the many gastronomic societies or in a restaurant, for a ceremony of celebration. We can find no other explanation for the fact that, of the 7 restaurants in Spain to have achieved the glory of 3-star distinction by the prestigious Michelin Guide, four are located in the Basque Country. The latest to enter the Olympus of the gastronomic world is Eneko Atxa, from the Azurmendi in Larrabezua, scarcely 15 km from Bilbao. At the age of 35, Eneko is the youngest chef to have achieved the feat in Spain. Atxa therefore joins the ranks of the great gurus of Basque cuisine who have now held the venerated three stars for several years: Juan Mari Arzak, Pedro Subijana at the Akelarre and Martín Berasategui. At the helm of the first 3-star restaurant in Bizkaia, Eneko Atxa understands cuisine as a “culture and way of living in the constant quest to convey pleasure”. Eneko admits that he was strongly marked by the homemade food of his childhood. The newly acclaimed chef trained under Martín Berasategui and Andoni Luis Aduriz, who themselves boast three and two Michelin stars respectively. But the Azurmendi is not the only establishment in Bizkaia to have attracted the attention of the Michelin Guide in its 2013 edition. Young chef Álvaro Garrido, at the head of the Mina in Bilbao, has entered the select club of Michelinstar-studded crème de la crème on bagging his first star. These two new stars add their twinkle in the Michelin firmament to others held by restaurants in Bizkaia since previous editions: the Nerua, in Bilbao, the Andra Mari in Galdakao, the Boroa in Amorebieta and the Etxebarri in Axpe. You better believe it, dining in Bizkaia is a heavenly experience. The new two stars awarded to Basque gastronomy bring the total to 28.
