Kerkstra On EcoFab by PolyJohn

The profile of Kerkstra Portable Restroom Services, Inc., Hudsonville, Michigan,is shaped by an extraordinary strategic business leadership track record. Brian Knoper, owner of Kerkstra, recently shared with ALW some information about the company’s history, growth, and challenges, and strategies, and his future plans for the

business. He further discussed Kerkstra’s identification of technology leader EcoFab, a subsidiary of PolyJohn, as his company’s preferred supplier. He talked about his experience working with the manufacturer over recent years, and his plans for continuing investment in EcoFab’s advanced vacuum toilet models going forward.

PORTABLE RESTROOM SERVICES, INC.

Brian Knoper reflected on his purchase of the Kerkstra company and the growth of the business under his direction to date: I bought the portables and services side of the Kerkstra company, and another buyer bought the septic services side of the business back in

January 2006. We’ve grown a lot.

Today, we have about 7,000 portable toilet units in our inventory. We also have about 30 restroom trailers. Of those, 6 are 2-stall, 7 or 8 are 3-stall, and the rest are 6-, 8-, and 10-stall. Plus, the pod RVO series (the collective Kerkstra stock of EcoFab units) has 60 seats

total. A couple of those are designed for wheelchair accessibility.

Our fleet includes 5 Ford F350s for trailer delivery and pickup and running around for various business needs. We have 4 Kenworths with 1,000-gallon waste tanks and 500-gallon water tanks. Those are our dedicated festival service vehicles. We also have 25 F550/600 trucks with 900/400 waste/water aluminum tanks for our normal route services. We run National Vac 304 pumps on our trucks. Most of our tanks are made by Imperial Industries. Those are all aluminum, and we have a few stainless steel tanks made by Best Enterprise.

We use GPS on all vehicles, with cameras inward and outward, along with other advanced field technologies. We’re always looking for ways to improve our equipment and tools to increase efficiency and quality.

THE KERKSTRA TEAM

We have 5 people in admin roles in the office and sales, and we have 26 field operators. They range from pickup and delivery workers to people running regular service routes, to setup and tear-down teams for festivals and other events. Everybody kind of knows everybody’s job, so there’s plenty of capacity for crossfunctioning, as needed. I still participate in the field,

especially on construction worksites, as needed. There are some admin things I’m responsible for, but I’m mostly in the field.

We handle events with up to 1,500 portable toilets. For example, the Electric Forrest, music festivals, and other events. We pride ourselves on being a smaller company that can compete so effectively with national brands in serving major events.

ECOFAB BY POLYJOHN

EcoFab, just acquired by PolyJohn Enterprises this year, in February 2026, specializes in technologically water-saving advanced vacuum toilet systems. The process of the equipment is non-macerating (no

grinding involved). It’s entirely a vacuum system.

This high-efficiency technology is engineered for the segment of the portable toilet service industry focused primarily on deployment for disaster relief, public events, and other large-scale needs. Some of the key benefits of PolyJohn’s new EcoFab technology for service operators include:

4 Simpler Setup: Installation options are more flexible, allowing pipes to run horizontally as well as vertically, or even around corners, not requiring a continuous slope. That means faster deployment.

4 Incomparable Efficiency: The system works by air transport of waste material through pipes at high

velocity, not by gravity. The use of strong air pressure can reduce water consumption by up to 90%.

4 Exceptional Water Conservation: The EcoFab technology uses just a third to a little over a half gallon per flush. That’s as much as 90% lower water consumption than conventional portable toilets.

4 Superior Hygiene: The EcoFab innovation is a closed system, so it eliminates the upward spray of bacteria that occurs from flushing a traditional toilet, which minimizes contaminants and odors.

4 Minimized Maintenance: Old-style vacuum systems required macerator pumps. The breakthrough EcoFab designs contain fewer moving parts. That means reduced incidents of clogs, and minimized general maintenance costs.

KERKSTRA AND ECOFAB

Brian shared his experience with EcoFab and talked about the significance of his business relationships with the unique vendor to his operations and future plans for his company: EcoFab makes individual restroom pods that can be linked together to create an extended bank of units. The base unit is a portable 2-stall vacuum pod. Inside are 2 stalls, a sink, and a toilet on each side.

All the pods line up modularly and attach to each other — sort of daisy-chained together. The series attaches to a tech unit that creates a constant vacuum and pumps out when a user flushes a toilet in one of the pods. It’s vacuumed out, much like an airplane vac toilet. It’s the same kind of technology.

SPOTLIGHT

We utilize this model at festivals and fairs, especially in VIP and upscale areas, where end users are looking for something with a more value-added and luxurious experience than using traditional plastic portable toilet units. There are other vacuum unit suppliers out there,

Instead of users having to walk out and use a common sink, everything is contained within each restroom unit. That’s much more desirable for the users...

but a big factor that makes EcoFab so attractive to us, in our niche market and for our business size, is the interior sinks.

Instead of users having to walk out and use a common sink, everything is contained within each restroom unit. That’s much more desirable for the users, and it’s an advantage for us to provide them with that benefit at a cost that is feasible for us in our pricing.

Another thing that really separates EcoFab in their field is that their vacuum unit is kind of changing the way the vac tech is applied to mobile units. It’s all selfcontained in one unit, whereas others out there take multiple units to do the same thing. The engineering is fantastic, it works so well. They’ve built in redundancies across the key systems in the equipment to ensure against failure. It’s a fabulous design, with 2 water pumps and 2 vacuum pumps, instead of the more typical equipment built with just one of each.

COLLABORATIVE ECOFAB CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE

Since the initial purchase, they [EcoFab engineers]

have been coordinating, reviewing, and continually improving the existing units I have. The support I’ve been getting has been ongoing. For example, they’ll examine a certain way a fitting is on and an idea for improvement. They’ve been trying to fix or improve everything that may enhance performance or comfort or convenience for the user. For training purposes, they actually sent the designer to work with us on our first event for a customer when we started using the pods. He was able to let us know best practices to manage or fix the various potential issues that are a natural part of providing portable toilet services. Up to this point, it’s been pretty flawless. We have not run across anything that is outside normal circumstances or that is not easy to address.

It has been a great deal for us. They [EcoFab engineers] have been working very well with us. They include me in the design process, and they carefully consider how we do our cross-country and local logistics as they’re producing those. I’ve got on order right now for additional units, and they’re still keeping our ease of use in mind in manufacturing the units currently on order.

They’re looking at how we transport the units as they’re working to continue improving the design, fuel use rate, and time expenditures that can really eat into profits. They’ve just been a very good partner in all of it. Also, as part of PolyJohn, which has been around for a very long time and makes great products, EcoFab provides that PolyJohn level of backend support for us as well.

Our bonus program helps us retain talented people, and we offer full employee benefits, including health insurance, retirement accounts, etc. But, I also think a lot of our success in keeping good people onboard is just giving them something new and different to work on when the opportunities arise. That’s a big part of why we do out-of-state projects, to provide everyone with a little variety, which helps challenge us all in new and positive ways. And, those are really good income opportunities for all of our field service employees.

Maximizing Industrial Cleanup Productivity

Efficiency and momentum are critical in industrial cleanup. Any downtime affects productivity, which ultimately impacts a plant’s bottom line. When dust, sludge, spills, or residual material are not removed quickly and effectively, the impact can extend well

beyond the cleanup itself, affecting uptime, labor efficiency, and maintenance planning.

As shutdown windows grow tighter and labor demands increase, industrial cleanup has become a more important part of overall operational

performance. The goal is no longer simply to remove material. It is to do it faster, safer, and with less disruption to the rest of the operation.

Productive cleanup starts with the right equipment for the application. Industrial environments can involve

everything from fine powders to heavy debris, abrasive materials, and long hose runs in difficult-to-access areas. In these conditions, vacuum performance, airflow, filtration, debris capacity, and durability all influence how efficiently the work gets done.

The Guzzler team’s extensive industrial cleanup experience enables them to provide tips to maximize industrial cleanup productivity.

n Reduce Manual Handling Where Possible. The more cleanup can be completed through effective vacuum loading rather than manual shoveling or secondary handling, the faster and more safely the job can be completed. Safer cleanup methods often improve efficiency by reducing delays, limiting exposure, and allowing crews to maintain better control of the work area

n Remove Hazardous Material. Not only is removing hazardous material a safety protocol, but it keeps productivity high when done frequently and

efficiently. With fewer hazards to avoid, workers are better able to focus on the task at hand and reduce time spent on those tasks.

n Use Correct Equipment. Industrial cleanup productivity increases when the correct equipment is used. Investing in specialized equipment that works well and does its job quickly cuts down on time, lowers worker fatigue and reduces unnecessary use of equipment that’s not right for the job. Fine dust, wet sludge, abrasive debris, and bulk solids all place different demands on a vacuum system. Using equipment designed for the specific material improves efficiency and reduces unnecessary wear.

n Utilize Data Integration. Taking advantage of new technology or equipment models suited to industrial cleanup is a major productivity enhancer. New software solutions can analyze data and information to help decide what works well and what doesn’t. For example, new

technology can detect spills and buildup sooner, improving reaction times and increasing safety.

n Conduct Maintenance. Proper maintenance speeds up operations and reduces project complexity. Schedule maintenance ahead of time to keep operations running efficiently.

continued on page 32

Industrial cleanup equipment often works in harsh conditions. Machines built for continuous use and material-specific challenges can help minimize breakdowns and keep projects on track.

Finding a vacuum truck that’s right for the job not only saves time, but it keeps contractors from having to switch between several machines. Industrial cleanup should not be viewed as a secondary function. It is an important part of operational performance, particularly in facilities where uptime, maintenance efficiency, and labor utilization are under constant pressure. With the right approach and the right equipment, cleanup becomes more than a response task. It becomes a productivity advantage.

Recycling Old Portable Toilet Units

REMEMBER THE DAY WHEN YOUR SHINY BRAND NEW PORTABLE TOILETS ARRIVED? THAT WAS AN EXCITING TIME. FRESH INVENTORY, AN ACTION PLAN, AND THE WIDE-OPEN RENTAL MARKET WAITING FOR YOU. NOW, BECAUSE THE BUSINESS YOU'VE BUILT HAS BEEN GOOD, YOU HAVE SOME BATTERED AND WORN PORTABLE TOILET UNITS, TANKS, PLASTICS, AND POSSIBLY OTHER INVENTORY THAT IS AGING OUT. FORTUNATELY, THERE ARE WAYS TO CAPITALIZE ON SALES AND RECYCLING OPPORTUNITIES AND MAKE THE MOST OF RETIRED RENTAL ITEMS YOU WANT TO DISCARD.

Some portable toilet manufacturers may recycle your old HDPE units and reuse the plastic to produce new toilet units or other sanitation items.

RECYCLING YOUR PORTABLE TOILET UNITS

Recycling porta potty units is the process of converting damaged or old plastic toilet units into new ones, or into other products that can be constructed from the same high-density polyethylene (HDPE).

Some portable toilet manufacturers may recycle your old HDPE units and reuse the plastic to produce new toilet units or other sanitation items. Or, like many porta potty rental services, you may decide to resell your used porta potties for a variety of applications, or choose other options for discarding unwanted units.

BUSINESS CORNER

WHEN IT’S TIME TO SAY GOODBYE TO OLD PORTA POTTY UNITS

It will become clear enough that it’s time to retire an old portable toilet unit if you discover interior or exterior structural damage, moving parts that are no longer functioning properly, or a persistent bad odor even after cleaning. Or, if there is just so much wear from use over the years that the unit looks unsanitary or abused, it’s probably time to recycle the materials. Indicators that it’s time to replace a porta potty can include:

1. Damaged Structure: If the unit has cracks, fine fractures, holes in the walls, roof, toilet base, floor, door, waste tank, sink, or exterior surface, it is no longer sanitary or safe.

2. Broken Parts: Non-functioning pumps, vents, or doors, or a badly damaged wall, roof, floor, toilet seat, or other essential part can make the portable unit unsafe and usable.

3. Major Wear: Moving portable toilet units from place to place through the years, continuous use at customers’ busy sites, etc., causes extreme and irreparable wear.

4. Weakened Plastic: Old porta potties that have been long exposed to moving, sunlight, weather, body weight, chemical cleaning, etc., can become weak and prone to cracking.

5. Persistent Odor: If the unit emits an odor that thorough cleaning does not eliminate, the vent

system may no longer work, or the oxidized structure may have absorbed waste particulate.

FIRST: WASTE DISPOSAL PRIOR TO RECYCLING A PORTA POTTY

Recycling the plastic portable toilet unit is one task. Disposing of the waste inside is another. Before you recycle a used portable toilet unit, it must be emptied and all residual waste material must be cleared from it:

Vacuum Waste Removal: Waste is removed from the tanks and the tank is cleaned.

Wastewater Dumping: The wastewater is hauled to an authorized disposal location.

Wastewater Treatment: The waste is delivered to an approved treatment facility.

WAYS TO RECYCLE OR REPURPOSE PORTA POTTY UNITS

Eventually, even the best portable toilet parts wear out and the units begin to require excessively frequent repairs in order to keep providing safe and sanitary service for users. When that happens, it’s time to replace the aging inventory. There are various options for proper disposal of retired toilet units: Recycling Facilities for Plastics

The heavy-duty plastics of old porta potties can be recycled for use in building new industrialgrade products. For example, new portable toilets, handwashing stations, other sanitation equipment, plastic lumber, roadway construction barriers, fencing, picnic tables, park benches, outdoor furniture, and many other things.

Environmental Recyclers

Connect with facilities that handle recycling of HDPE and/or other heavy-duty plastics, as applicable. Or, contact the manufacturer of your portable units to

Eventually, even the best portable toilet parts wear out and the units begin to require excessively frequent repairs in order to keep providing safe and sanitary service for users.

ask if they offer a program for taking back used units. Or, search for a recycler that specifically handles environmentally safe management of plastic products that have reached the end of their usable life.

Salvage Parts

Experienced portable toilet rental company managers frequently dismantle retired units and reuse components that can be salvaged. For example, doors, tanks, seat assemblies, vents, hinges, TP dispensers, cables, brackets, and other parts may be reusable for maintaining units that are still in operation.

Resell Retired Porta Potty Units

There are numerous good uses for retired but functional porta potty units. For example, they may be sold for personal use at campsites, boat docks, backyards, home remodeling, workshop, farming, family events, or other non-commercial applications.

BUSINESS CORNER

Donate Old Units

If you have no luck selling your old units or don’t want to embark on that mission, you can simply donate the rental units that are still in good enough condition to benefit people. The porta potties can be given to nonprofit organizations for them to reuse in a wide range of applications. (You may be entitled to a tax write off. Check with your CPA.)

Dumping Old Units

If you must manage the removal of no longer usable portable toilet units and are unable to find a readily available better alternative, locate a facility that accepts industrial or commercial construction waste and arrange to deliver it for disposal.

OUT WITH THE OLD – IN WITH THE NEW

When it’s time to say goodbye to a porta potty that has served your business well for a long time, especially if it’s a part of your original stock, it may unexpectedly be a slightly sentimental moment. But, when it’s time to cycle it out of your inventory, that means it’s also time to bring in some fresh new replacement units. That’s always exciting, and it probably means a quality upgrade in new model design. And that marks another milestone moment for your business. Congratulations!
