A deep dive into our Sport and Recreation programs

So,whatsetsGIC’cSport&Recreationcoursesapartfromtheusual�itnessprograms? It’sallaboutbalance.Yougetasolidfoundationintheessentials-thinksafety,management, customerservice-butyoualsodivehead�irstintoreal-worldactivities.Thebestpart?You’re notstuckinaclassroomallday.Instead,you’llbeoutthererotatingthroughdifferentsports andrecreationalactivities,gettingthechancetoplan,coach,andletyourcreativityshinein afun,interactivesetting.

Getoutdoorsandlearnbydoing!AtGIC,youwillplaythemainteamsportssuchassoccer, beach volleyball, and basketball, but you’ll also try out games from different cultural backgrounds,likeAboriginalgamesoractivitiesdesignedforpeoplewithdisabilities.These experiencesaren’tjustabouthavingagoodtime(thoughyouwill);they’reaboutlearning to adapt your coaching style, improving your communication skills, and building the con�idencetoleadanysituationinyourcareer.

Ifyouarealreadyasportsenthusiast,thesecourseswillhepyoulevelup.Whetheryou’ve been coaching for a while or you’re more familiar with the administrative side of things, there’s something here for everyone. You’ll dive deeper into areas like customer service, management,andworkingwithdiversegroups.Bytheend,youwillhaveawell-rounded skillsetthat’llhelpyouexcelinyourcurrentroleoropenupnewcareerpathsinthe�ield.

Wonderingwherethesecoursescantakeyou?Beyondbecomingacoachoreventplanner, youcouldstepintoroleslikesportadministratorofficer,volunteercoordinator,facilitymanager, orsportprogramof�icer.Thesejobsareallaboutmakingadifferenceinthesportsworld, whetherit’srunningafacility,organisingeventsormanagingprograms.

Meet Will: From student to trainer

Guillermo, or Will as everybody knows him,ismorethanjustatrainer-he’saball of energy, always ready to get everyone movingandhavingagreattime.

Being from Spain, Will naturally brings some of his cultural background into his teaching.“InSpanish-speakingcountries,we havethiscultureofcloserelationshipsand trying to include everyone,” Will explains. Thisinclusiveapproachisattheheartofhis classes.Whetherit’smakingsureeveryone’s involvedorcreatinganenvironmentwhere studentsfeellikethey’repartofabigteam, Will’steachingstyleisallaboutparticipation andhavingfun.

Not too long ago, Will was in the same shoesashisstudents,workingthroughthe courses.Hisadvice?“Enjoytheprocessand stay open to learning. The �itness world is always evolving with new research and equipment,sokeepingupwiththelatesttrends will help you stay ahead.” Will emphasises the importanceofbeingcuriousandreadytoadapt, whichhasbeenkeytohissuccess.

Here’ssomethingyoumightnotknowabout Will: he’s got a deep connection with music. “I wouldn’tcallitatalent,”hesaysmodestly,“but I used to play the drums and even played in a bandwithacoupleoffriends.”Thismusicalside addsanotherlayertoWill’sdynamicpersonality, showingthathe’smorethanjustabout�itness; he’sgotrhythminhisveinstoo!

HavingcompletedboththeCerti�icateIIIand IV in Fitness at GIC, Will �inds it incredibly rewardingtonowbeontheotherside,guiding new students. “It feels great to teach what I’ve learnedandsharemyexperiences,”hesays.Will strivestoteachinawaythatblendshispassion for sports with real-life situations to make his classes very engaging. So, the next time you’re in one of Will’s classes, you’ll know a bit more abouttheguypushingyoutoreachyourbest!

As expected, Will enjoys play sports at the beach such as volleyball, but what you may don’t know about him is that he used to play drums and kind of have played in a band with a couple of friends years ago.
A rewarding experience: Will is a previous student of GIC who has returned to the college as trainer. That's him in a class at the gym in 2020!

Alba Díaz Fernández

Albaisa31y.o., fromMadrid,Spain, whorecentlycelebratedherone-yearanniversaryoflivinginAustralia.Herjourney tookherfromthebusystreetsoftheSpanish capital to the sun-kissed beaches of theGoldCoast,aplaceshechosetogeta tasteofsomethingdifferent."I’vealways lived in big cities, so I wanted to switch thingsup.TheGoldCoastfeltliketheperfectspotwithitsbeachvibes,"sheshares.

ForAlba,thecourseisn'tjustabouthitting the books — it's about hands-on learning."WhatIenjoythemostarethe practicalclasseswedo.Wenotonlypracticesports,butwealsoplanandorganise howwewouldconducttheseactivitiesas teachers.It’shelpingmebuildtheskillsI needtobecomeahighschoolPhysicalEducation teacher." While studying, Alba is alsoworkingasalifeguardatawaterpark. "It'sdefinitelyrelatedtothefieldofsports. Plus, it’s helping me improve my swimming skills and also giving me a clearer, moreorganisedideaofhowtoleadsports classes, which builds my con�idence for whenIentertheeducationsector."

Outsideofworkandstudy,Albamakes time to enjoy life. "I like going out with thefriendsI’vemadeatwork.It’salways agoodtime!"Andifthere’smusicinvolved,youmight just see Alba on the dance �loor. "People tell me I knowhowtomovetotherhythm.Igetit,though-I feelcomfortablewhenIdance,andIenjoyitalot."

Our student of the month

AlthoughadaptingtoAustralianculturehasbeen achallenge,Alba’sEnglishskillshaveimproved(she alsostudied8weeksofourGeneralEnglishbefore herVET!),andshenowfeelsathome.Heradvicefor fellow students? "Stay focused, especially on tough days.Australiaofferssomanyopportunities,butyou havetomakethemostofthem."Forthefuture,Alba plans to keep studying and aims to become a high schoolteacher."That’sthedream,"shesays.Andwith herdetermination,it’sclearshe’swellonherway!♥
