ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF ALICE SMITH SEPTEMBER 18, 2026 – FEBRUARY 14, 2027 WAY N E A N D C A R O LY N J O N E S G A L L E R Y
Alice Ravenel Huger Smith devoted her life to capturing the landscapes and waterways of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Born in Charleston in 1876, Smith was exposed to painting by attending classes at the art school established by the Carolina Art Association (now the Gibbes Museum of Art.) Throughout her career, Smith honed her craft through a variety of media and techniques, including drawing, etching, block printing, and oil painting. Watercolor, however, is the medium for which Smith is best known. The artist’s now celebrated ethereal scenes of marshes, rivers, woodlands, birdlife, and coastal light express her lifelong devotion to nature and to her homeland. This exhibition highlights the creations, contributions, and legacies of African Americans as they fought for freedom from the earliest calls for American independence and beyond. Fighting for Freedom spans the war years of the Revolution through the present, as African Americans have sought agency and liberty through craft. The furniture, metals, ceramics, textiles, art, tools, and personal accessories that form the core of this exhibition underline the idea of African American craft’s serving as a catalyst for freedom-seeking. Fighting for Freedom features more than thirty objects from public and private lenders and includes objects made by free and enslaved craftspeople. With artifacts from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this exhibition tells the stories of countless known and unnamed figures whose skills and commitment created physical objects — and expressions of independence in many forms. This exhibition has been created by the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum and the Black Craftspeople Digital Archive.

The turn of the twentieth century heralded a period of seismic change in the art world. Whereas Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists of the previous generation paved the way for modern art that broke free from academic conventions, the new avant garde, including household names like Picasso, Matisse, Duchamp, and Dalí, barreled into the new century determined to free themselves from artistic conventions altogether. This year we are excited to explore the next frontier of art: AI and its impact on visual media. Danny McBride, actor, comedian, screenwriter, director, producer, and founder of Rough House Pictures, will be interviewed by Mike Winklemann, AKA Beeple, a digital artist and graphic designer widely recognized as a pioneer in the realm of digital art and NFTs. Together, these two local, internationally-acclaimed artists will discuss their work and creative processes and how AI, along with other technological innovations, is shaping film and digital art today. Widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Brown revolutionized contemporary dance through her groundbreaking approach to movement, composition, and collaboration across artistic disciplines. ISABEL LU
WALKER ANTONIO
NOVEMBER 2– DECEMBER 11 Isabel Lu is a painter and researcher whose work explores routes of medicine that echo and overlap. Their educational background spans nutritional science, public health, and community-engaged research focused on food systems. Isabel earned their Bachelor of Science from Cornell University and a Master of Public Health and Registered Dietitian Certification from UNC Chapel Hill. Their large-scale, vibrant portraits incorporate ancestral and contemporary concepts across both Western and Chinese medicine, herbalism, architecture, and mythology.
DECEMBER 14–23 Walker Antonio is a Virginia-based, FilipinoAmerican painter whose work blurs the lines between the real and surreal, known and unknown, and physical and psychological. Working mainly on a large scale, his process moves from energetic and rough to slow and meticulous. Antonio received the 2023 Whetsell Family Fellowship and earned his bachelor’s degree in Studio Art and Art History from Wofford College. In 2025, he was awarded the Foundation House Artist-in-Residence in Greenwich, CT. Antonio is currently enrolled/pursuing his MA in Fine Arts at Falmouth University while teaching painting and drawing at Woodberry Forest School in Virginia.
