W E LC O M E I publisher’s note

Dear Readers,

When I look back over my own life, I can see that what always motivated me most were enthusiasm and dedication. Building Engel & Völkers from the ground up, playing polo, developing real estate and designing new projects. What unites these activities is the joy of turning ideas into reality and successfully achieving your goals. I learned that success and passion are inextricably linked. When things become challenging, doubts arise and you start reaching your limits. That’s often exactly when the crucial part

of the journey begins. If, in the end, you actually achieve your goals, the satisfaction you feel will be different because you know you’ve given it your all. Passion is the focus of this issue of GG, and beginning with our cover feature on Claudia Schiffer, we take a look at some of the people who have moved through life with great dedication and determination. Passion has many facets – it can be creative, entrepreneurial, athletic or artistic. But in every field, it is a force that makes extraordinary things possible. My personal definition of success is to achieve your goals by pursuing them with true passion. Going the extra mile is often what makes all the difference in the end. Sincerely,

Christian Völkers Publisher

There’s a reason why passion – along with expertise and exclusivity – has been one of three core values of Engel & Völkers since the very beginning. Passion is a big word, but it reveals itself less in large gestures than in a specific mindset, a willingness to commit more time, energy and care to something than is absolutely necessary. Many are quite capable of achieving a good result. But the challenge lies in the final ten percent – in taking the critical steps needed to transform good into excellent. This is the point at which many give up. Not for want of ability, but because they are unwilling to go beyond what’s required.

TRUE PASSION

… doesn’t show itself only at the moment of success but rather in the many steps leading up to it. It lies in the patience required to perfect a craft, the determination needed to pursue a vision, the courage it takes to remain true to an idea – and the will to create something enduring.

PHOTO KLAUS WOLTER

Everyone we feature in this issue shares this approach in their work. Claudia Schiffer talks about her creative projects, her work as a producer and curator and how curiosity and passion continuously lead to new things. The Irish designer Joseph Walsh creates sculptural artworks out of wood that attest to his profound knowledge of material and form. The British perfume designer Azzi Glasser creates fragrances that capture memories and emotions. And finally, at Castello di Reschio, we see what patience and determination can achieve when they are practiced over decades. What ties all these stories together is the conviction that excellence is never merely a product of chance but the result of experience, dedication, and a desire to create something exceptional. As new Head of Content, I am very pleased to be able to present you with this issue and, along with our editorial team, introduce you to people, places and ideas that inspire, open up new perspectives, and demonstrate what can happen when passion and talent meet.

I wish you an enjoyable read. FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM!

POETIC, EFFORTLESS AND CAREFREE One woman, one vision, one brand: The Italian jewelry designer Carolina Bucci talks about creativity, and how it’s perfectly acceptable for high-end pieces to be simple. BY A NNE K ECK EISEN

J

ewelry designer Carolina Bucci leads the family business in the fourth generation. With playful ingenuity and a deep sense of nostalgia for the carefree magic of childhood, she translates memories into fine pieces of jewelry that are made to be worn, creatively combined and infused with stories of their own. Her designs bring a contemporary effortlessness to the traditional Florentine goldsmith’s craft as she redefines luxury: personal, emotional and filled with life.

PHOTOS DAVID ABRAHAMS 2022 (1), CAROLINA BUCCI (1)

When you were growing up, you thought traditional jewelry was too formal, too rigid. Today, your brand is quite the opposite of that. How did your personal style evolve?

My great-grandfather founded the family gold jewelry business in Florence in 1885. I think tradition is very important, but as a young girl, I was frustrated by the strict rules that applied to fine jewelry, like having to wear certain things at certain times. What I craved was a playful element. I ultimately founded Carolina Bucci to show that fine jewelry could be fun and laidback, while remaining true to its heritage. The family workshop in Florence still exists and employs real jewelers, but the way they work is more relaxed, more contemporary. Many people regard fine jewelry as something to be kept safe in a box. Was it difficult for you to challenge this view?

My biggest critic was my father. When I wanted to alter a piece of jewelry, he made me sketch exactly what I had in mind and then showed me what worked and what didn’t. That was the best training I could possibly have had. From an early age, my father taught me to fight for what I wanted and work out whether it was feasible or not. It was this approach that led to the Lucky Bracelets – gold chains interwoven with silk threads. The bracelets don’t have a clasp; you’re meant to tie them and make a wish at the same time. Each color and charm

Carolina Bucci studied jewelry design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Thanks to her family history, her creativity is essentially something she was born with.

has a different meaning, such as love, happiness or good health. When I launched what I called my “emotional jewelry” there was a bit of pushback, but I persevered. Today, twenty years l ater, that bracelet collection is more popular than ever. How do you turn a creative idea into something that can actually be made?

I’ve learned a lot over the years, but my approach is always the same. I start with an idea and an image in my head, then I work backwards to see if what I envisage is possible to make. Very often, the tools that are needed don’t exist, so we have to make them. For our woven pieces, for instance, we took old wooden Renaissance looms and modernized them to accommodate gold threads and gold chains. Every collection is a learning process that pushes the boundaries of the craft. I don’t want to create things simply for the sake of creating, but in order to learn and evolve. Sometimes, this means making things a little bit more difficult for ourselves.

PHOTO 2022/2023 HEYSARAPRINCE.COM

What inspired the Forte Beads, a collection that is known for its playful, individual style?

My first collection, the Lucky Bracelets, was inspired by the friendship bracelets I made as a young girl at the beach in Forte dei Marmi every summer. Years later, my own children continued the family tradition. I have two boys, and when they were younger, I would always take along containers filled with colorful plastic beads. I wore the bracelets they made along with my real jewelry, and in 2018, came up with the idea for the Forte Beads: the same easygoing look, the same happy feeling, the same summertime memories – except made of real, precious materials. Many of your collections invite the wearer to take part in the creative process by altering or personalizing their pieces. Is this an important aspect of your work?

Absolutely. Every collection I design is inspired by my life or a moment in my life – almost like photographs in an album. When I look at my

designs, I know exactly what inspired them: a trip that I took, the birth of one of my sons or when I turned 40. What I love best is when a client falls in love with one of my pieces, for whatever reason, and the piece then takes on a new story that is meaningful to them. For me, the definition of true luxury is when something is perfect for you, but not for everyone else. That’s why personalizing a piece is so important. My jewelry reflects parts of my life, but I make it so it can begin a new journey with its wearer and create new traditions.

Ponte Vecchio, right at the center of the city. Montecito was our most recent opening. It’s very different, somewhat otherworldly, beautiful, elegant and well curated. At the same time, it has that typical, easygoing California charm: quality oriented but laid-back. Each store is a little different and reflects its location, but all three exude the unmistakable Carolina Bucci vibe.

You have stores in Florence, London and Montecito, California. Is there a particular concept behind these three locations?

In reality, every new collection tends to become my new favorite, although I always go back to the classics. They all serve a purpose and all represent something dear to me. If I really had to choose though, it would be my Family necklace. The small, individually crafted charms represent my children, my husband, our dog and even our fish. When I wear it, I have my whole family – my biggest inspiration – with me at all times. This makes it both meaningful and special.

I have a personal and emotional connection to each one of my stores. We opened the first one in London, the city I’ve lived in since 2004 and where I raised my children. Florence is my original home, the place my family lives and where you could say the brand was born. It took us a long time to find the right place for our artisanal workshops, but they’re in front of the

As one of the legendary supermodels of the 1990s, Claudia Schiffer was the face of an era. Beauty has never left her side; it has always been a faithful companion. The former model is now a curator in her own right. With carefully chosen projects that highlight her taste and reflect a deep inner creativity, Karl Lagerfeld’s former muse continues to demonstrate her keen sense of aesthetics and design.

all. Slim. Blonde. Bright eyes. A radiant smile. For many years, she graced the world’s runways, radiating angelic poise. So many stories could be told about Claudia Schiffer, but this one isn’t about her looks – even though they have undoubtedly played a decisive role in what the German icon has achieved to this day and what she stands for. Claudia Schiffer was the ultimate embodiment of the great supermodel era of the 1990s. She lived through the absolute pinnacle of the fashion world – an intense time when loud pop culture set the tone and supermodels like Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss were celebrated as stars. Karl Lagerfeld chose Claudia Schiffer as his muse and the face of Chanel. Her look defined an entire fashion decade and has made her a mainstay on magazine covers to this day. This picture-perfect career wasn’t achieved solely through luck and opportunity. Schiffer never played into the persistent cliché of the clueless model. From the outset, she brought with her a strong entrepreneurial spirit and deep creative drive. Originally, she had planned to follow in her father’s footsteps and study law, but by chance was discovered by a model scout at a Düsseldorf nightclub, catapulting her onto a new trajectory, one that could not have been more successful. Today, she stays largely out of the spotlight yet remains a muse, recently starring in campaigns for Versace, Balenciaga, Tommy Hilfiger and Donna Karan – with more to come. Some suspect a coolly calculated strategy behind this, but perhaps the secret to her continued success lies in her infallible instinct and deep faith that what comes from the heart is bound to succeed. Ms. Schiffer, financial and cultural analysts often describe your career as a masterclass in “quiet accumulation” and strategic retreat. You chose the tranquility of the English countryside to let your brand and capital compound, away from constant public visibility. Was this a natural personal instinct, or a conscious business decision to protect your artistic autonomy?

Claudia Schiffer: It is a reflection of who I am. Everything I do is genuine and natural.

“I am a very creative person and have learned from working with the best.” CLAUDIA SCHIFFER

Looking back at your transition from ultimate supermodel muse to curator, producer, and designer, how has your creative fire evolved?

I’m passionate about many different things; besides my family life, I also love decorating my home – hence the ceramic, glass and porcelain collections. I love movies and since my husband is a filmmaker, it feels natural for me to be on standby for questions on beauty and costume. Generally speaking, I am a very creative person and have learned from working with the best. Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld was famously your “magic dust,” transforming you from a shy German girl into a global icon. What did you learn from him?

Karl Lagerfeld was the perfect example of creating without strategy – following his instincts and passions, he taught me that creativity can come from anything. Claudia Schiffer continues to make her mark in the fashion world and designs collections under her own name. She accepts only select commissions and engages exclusively with projects she believes in. A passionate art collector, she owns works by renowned contemporary artists. Even as a young model, she preferred browsing the trendy Parisian galleries to attending wild parties. In 2021, she curated her first solo exhibition, titled “Captivate! Fashion Photography from the ’90s.” She has collaborated with the world’s best photographers: Peter Lindbergh, Herb Ritts, Ellen von Unwerth, Mario Testino, to name but a few. The accompanying book of the same name, published by Prestel, offers rare insights into her personal archive.

Claudia Schiffer used to hate being the center of attention. Karl Lagerfeld recognized her talent, made her his muse, and turned her into the face of Chanel. Schiffer herself says he transformed a shy German girl into a supermodel.

Schiffer creates her porcelain collections in collaboration with the long-established Portuguese manufacturers Vista Alegre and Bordallo Pinheiro (available to purchase from bordallopinhiero.com). The designs are inspired by her childhood in Germany and her deep connection with nature.

Your work on “Captivate!” highlights the golden age of analog fashion photography. What did looking back at thousands of photos and test Polaroids reveal about that era?

There was so much incredible photography in the 1990s. Relooking at it all reminded me of what an extraordinary period of reinvention, rebellion and innovation that era was and how amazing it was to have been a part of it. The 1990s was an exceptional decade that witnessed the rise of style culture, the birth of the supermodel and fearless creativity. Young designers, photographers, stylists and art directors emerged and fundamentally changed the way we view fashion and design. Because fashion photography is a democratic art form, circulating on billboards, digital platforms, packaging and in magazines, it has an enormous sphere of influence. The 1990s was a watershed decade that welcomed fashion photography and photographers as a driving force in visual culture. I think that is why it is of such fascination to a younger generation now. There’s a fascination with the analogue era: vinyl, Polaroids!

You have written that an iconic fashion image is born from the rapport between model and photographer. You’ve worked with many legends. What made those creative partnerships so successful?

As a model, you needed to study a photographer’s work, a designer’s work and learn how to translate that vision in front of the lens. In Valentino you are transformed into a romantic heroine; in Versace into a siren; in Chanel into an effortlessly chic woman of the world. What I learnt early on is that each photographer “sees” in a different way. Helmut Newton was meticulous in every detail and that is what gives his imagery such graphic strength. By contrast, Elgort is a master at capturing exuberance outdoors while working with Ellen Von Unwerth brought out the playful and naughtiness. But the shoot itself is an alchemy of e xperts from all fields – photography, hair and makeup, location and set design, models, stylists, art directors and editors. A captivating shoot is the result of great teamwork.

in S uffolk has a more storied, traditional feel. Schiffer purposefully contrasts the heavy oak paneling with contemporary art by Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol. It was this love of eclecticism – and the desire to leave behind the stiff, perfectly matching tableware of her childhood – that inspired her chinaware collection. She has designed pieces that blend time-honored craftsmanship with deeply personal stories for the long-established manufacturers Vista Alegre and Bordallo Pinheiro.

As an executive producer, Schiffer now brings this creative expertise to her husband Matthew Vaughn’s film sets, where she oversees the visual identity – aesthetics, hair and makeup, costumes, and interior design – of the productions. The name of her production company is a play on her nickname: Cloudy Productions. Her creative influence on screen is unmistakable: Whether it’s the tailored, British elegance of the hit spy series “Kingsman,” the extravagance of the Elton John biopic “Rocketman,” or the set design of the latest spy comedy “Argylle,” Schiffer pulls the aesthetic strings behind the scenes. “Argylle” is close to the family’s heart for a very special reason: The family cat, Chip, made an appearance on screen and rapidly emerged as the secret star. Schiffer immortalized the s tory in her book “Blue Chip: The Confessions of Claudia Schiffer’s Cat,” written with tongue-in-cheek humor and plenty of heartfelt emotion. Schiffer’s creative passion manifests itself in the spaces she inhabits. Her private interior universe thrives on a fascinating architectural duality, embodied by two very different English homes. Her light-filled, modern retreat in Oxfordshire features an elegant mélange of Scandinavian minimalism and mid-century furniture. In contrast, the historic Tudor estate C oldham Hall

Uniting Vista Alegre’s refined, heritage porcelain with Bordallo Pinheiro’s whimsical, expressive ceramics is a rare and unexpected feat. What was the creative friction or harmony you wanted to explore by mixing these two very different Portuguese traditions?

I’ve been drawn to homeware and collecting ceramics, glass and porcelain my whole life, and Vista Alegre and Bordallo Pinheiro are experts at what they do. I’d collected so many of their ceramic pieces that I eventually wanted to connect with the team, talk about their history and explore a collaboration. Over my career, I’ve learned only to work with brands that I admire and so this felt like an authentic fit. I was very hands-on throughout the entire process – from ideation and my initial designs, right through to the final product. The glass vases in your Cloudy Butterflies collection require master glassmakers to execute the medieval incalmo technique, hot-melting different colors horizontally without a mold or mixing. What was it like collaborating on a process where the margin for error is miniscule, and where ancient craftsmanship dictates the final form?

I’ve always been passionate about exceptional craftsmanship, whether in fashion design or photography, architecture, or objects: I’m endlessly

curious about the how and the why things are made. That’s why it was incredible to work with a heritage brand like Vista Alegre and experience first-hand how to use traditional techniques to create beautiful everyday pieces that will hopefully be cherished and passed down through generations over time. Your Gudrun collection is named after your late mother, an avid gardener, and is deeply rooted in your childhood memories of autumn. When you see these pieces finished in forest greens, mustard, and crimson, do you feel they successfully translate the mood of those fall days?

I wanted to dedicate this collection to my childhood memories connected to the German countryside. It’s inspired by listening to the woodpeckers and birdsong, watching the squirrels from my bedroom window and collecting acorns while my mother gathered leaves, which I used as tiny canvases for my drawings. When I started brainstorming ideas for Gudrun, acorns were one of my first design references and feature in some of my favorite pieces like the porcelain teapot and the cups for tea or expresso. They look lovely on display. You styled the lifestyle imagery for the Gudrun collection on your mid-century wooden tables at Coldham Hall. How does the design process change when you are creating specifically for your own lived-in, domestic spaces?

Everything I design, I design for myself. I grew up with very formal, matching crockery, but I’ve realized that I prefer to mix things up. Decorating my home with beautiful items, from art to candles and vintage furniture, as well as pieces I collect and have found around the world, is a passion of mine. Your two homes are very different. Coldham Hall was built in 1574 and is a listed historic building. In Oxfordshire, you live in a far more modern setting. How do you strike a balance between preserving history and creating a modern home?

I’m fascinated by art, design and interiors. With my Suffolk home, I adopted a modern take on country style. I brought in light and dark oak furniture, lots of green, reds and orange, as well as

patterned wallpaper, all juxtaposed with modern art. I chose fabrics that work with muddy dogs and created cozy little nooks where you can enjoy the warmth of a fireplace, both in winter and in a cool summer. It’s a place to feel inspired. Coldham Hall was once owned by the Rookwood family, which included Ambrose Rookwood, a Catholic conspirator who played an instrumental role in the Gunpowder Plot. Legend has it that the conspirators, headed by Guy Fawkes, gathered here before setting off on their journey to London. The house, originally called Rockwood Hall, changed its name after Queen Elizabeth I visited for lunch one day and was served cold ham. She was so appalled that she christened it “Coldham Hall.” When the days grow shorter, how do you cultivate a sense of coziness within your home?

I light a lot of candles, which I feel adds a quality to my life at home. I designed the Gudrun pieces to compliment my mid-century wooden tables; they infuse my home with the warm earthy tones of fall. They also find a place in my weekend countryside retreats, where their rich colors and seasonal motifs – mushrooms, leaves and acorns – contribute to a sense of coziness alongside a crackling fire. I take joy in how these ceramics introduce a subtle change to the living space; they pair beautifully with green hydrangeas and the lit cream candles while the Butterfly collection goes into hibernation until spring. A fashion writer famously referred to you as “the model who doesn’t make mistakes.” You gracefully disagreed, stating that you certainly make them but strive “never to make the same mistake twice.” What has been your most valuable setback and what did it teach you?

Every setback has taught me tenacity, strength and never to take anything personally. Is there still one unfulfilled creative dream that you would love to bring to life?

Not really, because I never put any dream on the back burner. It might not work out but I will definitely explore it. I have lots of projects in the pipeline and I will see which ones become a reality.

is works are simultaneously clear and extravagant, simple yet complex. They feel both ancient and futuristic – almost as if they had grown naturally rather than been designed. Born in Ireland in 1979, Joseph Walsh designs exceptional furniture and objects, practicing his craft in its most exquisite form. The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire commissioned him to design the seating for Chatsworth House, and his high-profile admirers include actor Jeremy Irons and the former Gucci Group president, Domenico De Sole. In this interview, the charming autodidact declares his preference for wood and expresses his deep appreciation for the centuries-old trees that shape his art. He describes a pivotal crisis in his career, the inspiration he takes from Ireland’s rugged natural landscape and reveals two pieces of unsolicited advice that changed his life. We learn about his new exhibition in Paris and what drives him to go to his studio every day, where, with patience, passion and a relaxed mindset, he continues to transform wood into new, unexpected forms.

JOSEPH WALSH

Joseph Walsh, are you in New York right now? Yes, I’ve been coming here several times a year for the past fifteen years. The city plays an important part in my life. Right now, I’m here to refinish one of my pieces, to install another piece and to see a few clients. My schedule here always seems to fill up quickly. But your work has a strong connection to your home country of Ireland, doesn’t it? That’s true. However, my work also adapts to other places and circumstances, like the recent project I carried out in Japan. My work responds to my surroundings. In Ireland, I can hear the sound of the wind all the time. My studio is also near the sea – so you have the feeling of actually being on the edge of Europe. If I were working on mainland Europe, my work probably wouldn’t be quite as influenced by chance; it’d be a bit more formal and maybe even larger as well.

my neighbor a bookshelf out of the wood. He was a wonderful gentleman – kind of from another era – who lived in a large Georgian house. Unfortunately, it was later destroyed in a fire, along with the bookshelf. I’ve been working with ash wood ever since. I still remember exactly when I saw the fresh shavings for the first time. Before that, I had only known aggressively dried wood. This wood, however, had grown slowly and been air-dried. It was a profoundly moving experience.

Wasn’t there an early experience with wood that changed your life? I started carving and working with wood when I was quite young – although back then, it was still very amateurish. I made my first piece of furniture when I was twelve. I think I was a bit of a curiosity to my neighbors, but I piqued their interest because I took what I was doing quite seriously. When I turned fifteen, a neighbor – a nice elderly man in his mid-eighties – offered me some trees. They were ash trees. I have a very vivid memory of that day. He led me across his yard to the trees and said, “I’ve known these trees my whole life. They’ve grown very slowly because the soil here is poor. They will make great furniture.” At fifteen, I didn’t understand much about wood – for example, that it can shrink or expand when you’re working with it, or how pliable it is. But as the years passed, what my neighbor told me began to make more and more sense. The trees were felled and cut into planks. As a thank-you, I built

How do you select the wood you work with today? I’ve been buying timber from a woman in France for the past fifteen years. So, in a way, she takes the very first step. She knows the timber I like, what I’m trying to achieve, and she finds the trees for me. I visit her once a year. Every now and then, I’m also offered individual, old trees from estates. This is why I started the Tree Legacy Project. I was recently offered a yew from Lismore Castle. It had grown very slowly and was probably about five hundred years old – something very special. Imagine this tree in this historically significant place. It once stood in a bishop’s palace, witnessed the Reformation, and passed into the possession of Sir Walter Raleigh in 1589. It later came into the hands of the Boyle family, into which the Devonshire family married. This tree witnessed all of that. We wanted to invest the time and energy we believed this tree deserved and to record exactly where it came from. So, we asked an artist to

draw the tree and its surroundings and then wrote a little bit of history about the place during the time the tree was there. It’s profoundly moving to think of the timber as a living thing that has actively participated in the history of its surroundings. The tree should be revered, respected and cherished. The more we appreciate it, the more joy it gives back. Doing so allows us to change our thought patterns and break the cycle of constant consumption. You’ve said that the characteristics of the wood influence the way you work. How much does the wood itself dictate the final form? There was one very specific moment when I changed my approach. Funnily enough, it relates to New York. In 2008, I had an exhibition here featuring 23 new pieces and some that I had borrowed from clients. It was a huge deal for me at the time. But the more I heard the feedback, opinions and interpretations from visitors, the more frustrated I became. Back in Ireland, I received a letter from Jack Lenor Larsen, a very renowned textile designer whom I hadn’t known until then. It was a beautifully written and presented letter. Larsen had visited my exhibition and wrote: “You don’t know me, but I’m writing to you like an admiring grandfather with some unsolicited advice. Your craftsmanship scores 16 out of 10, but you haven’t found your own voice yet. To achieve this will require some soul searching.” That was very direct and unsolicited indeed. Yes, and I was going through a phase where I was very frustrated with my own work. After the exhibition, I actually wanted to destroy everything, but I couldn’t because a lot of it belonged to clients. Then I looked again at Larsen’s letter, in which he had written: “I think you should study the beauty of bird bones. Even a blind person should be able to enjoy the beauty of your work.” So, I took one of my new pieces and began carving away its harsh, rigid lines, guiding it toward softness. As I did so, I imagined a blind person touching the wood. It changed everything, and became a real breakthrough for me. The idea behind it was that the wood contains the complex DNA of its geometry. Without the influence of nature, the tree would, in fact, have a perfect geometry. But insects, the wind and life shape it into what we see. In a way, the strength of nature and its capacity to adapt became my way of thinking about designing. It helped me to be more open and to accept that there could be something better than just drawing on paper in a perfect grid. I took the time to change, and took a risk. I remember creating the first Enignum Table

that way and thinking: I’m breaking all my own rules. This might be the last piece I ever make and it’s going to be terrible. But I didn’t care. I just wanted to create something free. And from then on, that became my way of thinking. I’m so glad you were open to this suggestion. What can we expect to see at your exhibition in Paris? In September and October, we’ll be showing some pieces at the beautiful Hôtel de Sully and telling the stories behind them. The exhibition will include some pieces we don’t normally get to display. We’ll also be showing a large sculpture in the garden – part of a research project we’ve been working on for the past few years. There will also be a cultural program running alongside the exhibition. That sounds very interesting. What motivates you to keep going today? I find my work incredibly enriching. It brings me into contact with the world and I’m constantly learning. I love working with people from different cultures, but I also like being in my workshop. I like the challenge and the rigor. I like that I just keep going and that each piece is an expression of the year in which it was made. That’s very motivating. However, there’s also the risk of becoming so immersed that time flies by – as it always does when you’re having fun. But I feel a strong sense of purpose and can’t imagine doing anything else.

Joseph Walsh left a distinctive mark on the surface of his Magnus RINN: The work retains the artist’s own thumbprints.

ohnny Depp loves the smell of old books: ancient, dusty leather-bound tomes whose yellowed pages crackle with age. Helena Bonham Carter prefers to envelop herself in “a protective cloud like invisible armor that serves as an emotional anchor as well as a gateway to a fantasy world.” Austin Butler launched London perfume designer Azzi Glasser into the spotlight when he happened to mention in an interview that he never travels without her scented candles Rain on Earth. Azzi Glasser is not merely a “nose.” She’s an alchemist, a character analyst, a storyteller, a knower of souls. She designed her first perfumes for Agent Provocateur when she was 23, and the pink, oval bottles are bestsellers to this day. Today, Glasser specializes in bespoke fragrances that fully reflect a particular personality – scents that give material form to a person’s essential self. When you meet the petite, attractive perfume designer, you can tell very quickly that Glasser doesn’t think in individual fragrances but in narratives. It’s not for nothing that she calls her label The Perfumer’s Story. Each of her creations begins with one. “I interview people,” she explains, “like a journalist does, or even a therapist!” Glasser spends two or three hours with her clients, asking about their families, their childhoods, their dress style, their dreams, their anxieties. Lord David Linley, Earl of Snowdon, is one of her clients. After his interview, he stood up and said: “That was the best therapy session I ever had. Could I book another appointment for next week?” Glasser laughs as she recounts the anecdote. We’re sitting together on the hotel terrace of Le Majestic in Cannes across from the Palais des Festivals. The 56-year-old sorceress of scent enjoys attending cultural events. And she believes that everyone has two personas: a public and a private one. The genius lies in making both discernible to the olfactory senses – as a perfume. How Glasser discovered Cindy Crawford’s core essence is an astonishing story in itself. For her 50th birthday, Crawford’s husband, Rande Gerber, wanted to surprise her with a custom fragrance. The problem was, Crawford hated perfume and had never found anything she liked. After having Gerber tell her all about the supermodel, G lasser developed two scents and flew with them to

After designing perfumes for 25 years, Azzi Glasser sees herself as a pioneer in a traditional industry. Her conceptual approach enables her to create unique character scents for Hollywood stars and musicians. She launched her own brand The Perfumer’s Story in 2016.

California. Crawford announced: “I’ll only accept the gift if Rande and I choose the same scent independent of each other.” He took a sniff, she took a sniff – and they both chose the same bottle. “Bingo!” You can hear the gratification in Glasser’s voice even today. Crawford immortalized the moment on Instagram, posting: “Even though I loved them both, I was drawn to one immediately because it felt like an old friend.” The Hollywood buzz around Azzi Glasser came about quite by coincidence. Her son attended the same school as Helena Bonham Carter and director Tim Burton’s child. What began as parents having a chat soon turned into a friendship, and it was at a children’s birthday party that Bonham Carter discovered Glasser’s profession. Between them, they had the idea to create a bespoke scent for a character in a film. Why not? So, Azzi Glasser began developing scents to help actors flesh out their characters – creating a kind of olfactory guide to making them come alive. Over the years, for Bonham Carter alone, she designed scents for the Bellatrix Lestrange character from “Harry Potter,” Princess Margaret from “The Crown” and the iconic Red Queen from “Alice in Wonderland.” When the British actor played a down-and-out psychiatrist in Tim Burton’s

44 I EDITION 4 . 26

“Dark Shadows,” Glasser helped her reek of bourbon and Gauloises. So much so, in fact, that fellow actor Johnny Depp was perplexed and asked the actor if she hadn’t perhaps gone a bit too far preparing for her role. When she told him her secret, he immediately asked for Glasser’s number. “Azzi possesses a certain sorcery in that she is capable of capturing the perfect essence of a character in scent,” he says, and became a loyal fan. For Depp’s role in “Dark Shadows” Glasser created the essence of vampire in a bottle. Then, for his London townhouse, she designed Old Books, a scent evocative of libraries, eccentricity and rock ’n’ roll. Glasser’s name soon made the rounds in Hollywood and beyond. Laura Linney’s alternating characters in the play “The Little Foxes” each had their own scent – created by Azzi Glasser. In only two days, she designed a double identity for Cate Blanchett’s stage performance in “The Seagull.” Glasser’s client list goes on, and includes Kylie Minogue, Orlando Bloom, Stephen Fry and Noomi Rapace.

reen hills as far as the eye can see, covered in nothing but grapevines. The drive to Mareuil-sur-Aÿ takes us past countless vineyards, but upon arriving at the Billecart-Salmon estate, another plant immediately catches our eye. In the center of the well-tended French garden, a mighty chestnut tree stands guard over the courtyard. More than 200 years old, its roots reach down toward the Maison’s historic wine cellars below. The staff here are delighted to share the legend surrounding the tree: Because it has drunk nothing but champagne from the soil over the centuries, it has defied every disease. This charming story – one of many told – reminds us that wine is more than just a product here: It is the very foundation of life in the region. In Champagne, the presence of the world’s finest sparkling wine is inescapable. Anyone who travels here and looks behind the scenes quickly comes to appreciate the immense work and dedication that goes into every bottle. At Billecart-Salmon, it all began in 1818 with a love story: the marriage of Nicolas François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon. Their union gave rise to a champagne house that remains independent and family-owned to this day – a rarity in a region long dominated by large luxury conglomerates. In tribute to these origins, the brand’s most exquisite vintage cuvées still proudly bear the founders’ names. Just how deep the family’s roots run was highlighted by a poignant moment in late 2025, with the passing of Jean Roland-Billecart – affectionately known as “Monsieur Jean” – at the remarkable age of 102. His wife continues to live on the estate, maintaining the spirit of a man who spent decades revolutionizing the champagne house and its cellar techniques.

Today, the company is led by a new generation of family members. Anyone meeting Mathieu Roland-Billecart – CEO since 2019 and a seventhgeneration family representative – and his cousin Antoine from the sixth generation, quickly forgets that they are at the helm of a multimillion-dollar global enterprise. Both men embody a charming, almost disarming down-to-earthness, and when they talk about champagne, their eyes light up. While Mathieu guides the legacy into the future with strategic acumen and visionary clarity, Antoine travels the globe as a passionate brand ambassador, bringing their champagne to tables from London to Sydney. Antoine shares his favorite anecdotes with boundless enthusiasm, evident in his lively expressions and sweeping gestures. Although they divide their responsibilities, they remain deeply united by the same passion. Billecart-Salmon is not a brand that seeks to make a big splash; it eschews flashy marketing campaigns and aggressive discounts in favor of quiet restraint. Only a few visitors have the opportunity to look behind the scenes at the winery. There is no on-site hotel on the estate, which is not commercially open to the public. Those fortunate enough to enjoy the privilege of a visit, however,

The contemporary logo on the bottle allows for multiple interpretations: It resembles the stylized silhouette of a champagne glass, a grapevine tendril, and the founding family’s initials, S and B.

discover the art of hospitality and the renowned French art de vivre in its most authentic form. In 2024, Billecart-Salmon commissioned French-American interior designer Elliott Barnes and architect Vincent Fierfort to redesign the historic estate’s headquarters and its adjacent guesthouse, which contains just two exclusive suites. In the evening, the family invites guests to dinner, where Executive Chef Benjamin Gilles serves French creations perfectly paired with selected champagnes. The evening flies by, and at the end of it, five different bottles grace the table, including the iconic, salmon-hued Le Rosé and a vintage from the guest’s birth year. Whether this is an exceptionally thoughtful gesture or simply a happy coincidence remains a well-guarded secret. It is in moments like these that the house’s philosophy becomes tangible. As Mathieu Roland-Billecart beautifully sums up: “Authenticity is the true future of luxury. It’s one of the few things you can’t buy.” Producing approximately two million bottles annually, the Maison is regarded within the industry as a refined, mid-sized gem. The family has remained steadfastly loyal to its motto for generations: “Prioritize quality, strive for excellence.” Here, true luxury is defined by patience. While regulations require a minimum aging period of fifteen months for champagne, these bottles mature in underground chalk cellars for three to fifteen years before finally revealing their signature finesse. Rooted in terroir: Mathieu Roland-Billecart knows the vineyards like the back of his hand. For him, excellence begins with respect for the land.

in a remarkable display of contrasts, examples of socialist realist architecture stand side by side with elegant apartment buildings, while in the background, modern high-rises tower against the sky. The 237-meter-tall Palace of Culture and Science in downtown Warsaw dominates the cityscape. Originally a gift from the Soviet dictator, Stalin, it was completed only ten years after the end of World War II. Today, the building houses offices and educational institutions, along with numerous cultural facilities, including a cinema and several theaters. It also accomodates a public swimming pool. Few buildings represent Poland’s turbulent history more definitively. During World War II, over 85 percent of the Polish capital was destroyed. Reconstruction of the city involved more than rebuilding what lay in ruins; it was a conscious act of cultural assertiveness. The city’s historic old town, which was carefully reconstructed according to old survey drawings, demonstrates this quite impressively. In recognition of this remarkable feat of near-total reconstruction, the old town was named a UNESCO world heritage site. Together, Nowy Świat and Krakowskie Przedmieście streets form Warsaw’s Royal Route, which connects the old town with the former summer palaces of the Polish kings. The historical buildings and traditional cafés and shops here create a lively atmosphere that attracts visitors and locals alike. As you leave the h istoric Royal Route and walk toward the

Vistula River, Poland’s longest waterway, you come to Powiśle, where you should stop at Lukullus Patisserie, a traditional pastry shop currently led in the third generation by Albert Judycki – the founder’s grandson – and Jacek Malarski. Many of the pastries are based on recipes from old Polish cookbooks. The concept’s popularity speaks for itself: Not so long ago, a seventh location opened: Lukullus w St. Tropez. Each of the shops is designed by a different well-known architect to reflect the character of the building in which it is located and the atmosphere of the surrounding neighborhood. The Warsaw University Library, just a stone’s throw away, has a spectacular rooftop garden that is open to visitors between April and October and offers stunning views of the city. From here, you can enjoy a walk along the Vistula boulevard. This riverside promenade is several kilometers long and one of the city’s most popular places for a stroll. Rozbrat 20 is a prime example of Warsaw’s culinary scene. The restaurant, which has been awarded a Michelin star, innovatively combines Polish, British and Asian influences. Its focus on regionally sourced, seasonal ingredients and fermented foods, places it squarely at the center of contemporary cuisine – cosmopolitan, experimental and rooted in traditional culinary arts. In keeping with the castle’s ancient stone walls, I almost expect to be handed a heavy, wrought-iron key, but instead receive a keycard made of wood printed with an antique portrait. This turns out to be something of a pattern, and I start spotting portraits everywhere on the walls. They are one of the many collecting passions of Count Benedikt Bolza and his wife Nencia, who have amassed countless paintings, sourced from antique and flea markets, which now add character and soul to the rooms. If I needed any further proof that this is no ordinary hotel, it is provided the moment I enter my spacious suite in the annex, tucked behind the former church of San Michele. There’s no sign of the typical hotel bedroom design; instead, the suite positively glows with personality. Warm colors and dark wood dominate the interior, and I feel like a private guest in the home of a distinguished collector.

The rooms flow elegantly into one another and exploring them feels almost like taking a tour of a stately home. A delectable chocolate cake awaits on the sideboard. Delicately dusted with icing sugar, it bears – just like the cushions on the bed – the initials CdR. One might assume they stand for Castello di Reschio. In fact, however, these are the initials of the first Count of Reschio, a detail that further underscores the nostalgic charm. If Count Bolza cannot find an object that matches his vision, he designs it himself – which is how the B.B. for Reschio range came into being. The collection includes the metal bed frame and the design award-worthy, chrome-plated coffee machine. The windows open onto two worlds: To the east, the morning sun creeps through the mist of the Umbrian hills; to the west, it sinks behind the border to Tuscany, bathing the landscape in a golden light. In the afternoon, I take a tour and discover some of the secrets of this vast 1,500-hectare property, which stretches across unspoilt hills, wild forests and seven artificial lakes. The origins of the fortress date back to the year 1050. When the Bolza family purchased the overgrown estate in the mid-1980s, almost all of

the fifty historic farmhouses were in ruins, and not a single one still had a roof. Over the decades, the buildings have been carefully restored by the family and, for the most part, sold to private owners. All work takes place under the watchful supervision of Count Benedikt Bolza, who, as an architect and visionary, ensures that the spirit of the past remains alive in even the smallest details. It was only in 2021, after years of meticulous work, that the Castello opened as a boutique hotel with 36 suites. As I wander through its hidden nooks and narrow corridors, I can sense the deeply personal family history radiating from every stone. It is a place where fate has played its part, too: In the 1990s, Donna Nencia came to Reschio as a restorer to work on the historic frescoes. She met Benedikt Bolza, they fell in love, and Nencia stayed. Today, her creativity and love of nature are an incredible asset to the estate. The staff say she knows every plant on the grounds, from the huge rosemary bushes to the numerous fig and lemon trees. The next morning in the Tabaccaia, I realize just how deep the creative spirit is rooted in the family. Count Bolza transformed this 1940s tobacco factory into a design studio, with brick, concrete and glass details lending

Bespoke interiors: Every detail in the suites is thoughtfully designed. Many of the furnishings, including the striking bed frame and the Poggibonsi lamps, were created by Benedikt Bolza.

A family tradition: Count Benedikt Bolza was one of five siblings. Today, his own five children carry on the family’s creative legacy.

an industrial feel. Antiques, sculptures and gilded mirrors are piled high between the desks. Bolza is a perfectionist who leaves nothing to chance. For him, the renovation of every single house is a deeply emotional act: “It’s like a child being born,” he says, his eyes lighting up. Two of his daughters join us around the table during our conversation. They carry on the family’s creative legacy with Reschio Collections, a brand name that sells items linked to the estate’s traditions and crafted by local artisans – from olive oil and leather pouches to signature lamps. Later, I stroll down to the Ristorante alle Scuderie, past the Teatro Equestre, the heart of the legendary horse-breeding operation founded by the present owner’s grandfather, Count Antonio Bolza. In the indoor ring, guests can watch the training sessions led by master Antonello Radicchi and his wife Francesca. His gentle method requires no tack whatsoever, and the Andalusians, whose coats turn snow-white over the years, move in perfect harmony. The horses are not entered into competitions, as the rigid discipline and coercion that that would require goes against the estate’s philosophy of

freedom. Near the stables, I take a seat in the restaurant and enjoy an excellent pasta cacio e pepe and a scoop of pistachio ice cream. Before the day draws to a close, I head to the Bathhouse spa, situated in the former wine cellars, directly beneath the imposing stone walls of the castello. Thanks to the ingenious booking system, I feel I have the place entirely to myself. As I descend the steps, I lose all sense of time. The thick walls block out the daylight, leaving only the candles flickering around the sides of the Roman bath. I swim through a narrow passageway into the foundations of the great tower, where a waterfall cascades down from a height of several meters. After the sauna, I float into the monumental fireplace room for a massage and give in to a state of pure, timeless bliss. When the driver comes to take me back to Florence a few days later, I take one last look at the cypress trees, which soar into the sky like bold brush strokes. As we pull away, I leave with a deep appreciation of the potential that can be unleashed by a family’s unconditional devotion to a place – and vow to return to Reschio and its living legacy.

The large fireplace room is the centerpiece of the Bathhouse, situated in the castle’s former wine cellar. Within the thick walls, time appears to stand still.

HOME for ETERNITY BY M ER L E W I L K EN I N G

Where the passing of time tells the most beautiful stories: After many years of loving care and devotion, the historic Rogäsen Manor opens its doors to a new chapter. A rare and exclusive estate with a rich heritage and space for new visions.

An architectural testament to the era of Frederick the Great: Built in 1765, the manor house now shines once again in its original splendour.

E Steeped in history, the wooden staircase in the entrance hall provides a magnificent welcome to residents and guests alike. Charming arched windows, sliding doors, wooden floors and soft pastel tones lend an inimitable character to the light-filled rooms.

ven on the approach to this stately residence in the Potsdam-Mittelmark region, one gets an immediate sense of the very special atmosphere that pervades this place. Surrounded by majestic trees, some of which date back many centuries, Rogäsen Manor was built in 1765 and lies nestled among the rolling hills of the Karower Plateau. “It captivated us from the very first moment we set eyes on it. It struck us straight away as a diamond in the rough,” recall the owners, Marion and Karl Geyer, thinking back to their first visit. With no end of passion and dedication, working closely with the Potsdam architectural firm Kühn-von Kaehne und Lange, they have dedicated many years to the meticulous and historically sensitive restoration of the estate. Their efforts have returned the listed property to its original splendour. Today, beautiful roses climb the light-coloured façade and the loggia like in a scene straight out of a fairy tale. A peaceful, private retreat has been created for all those “who cherish the refined life of the countryside.”

The main front door of the manor opens directly into the stately vestibule. The historic wooden staircase, with its ornate banister, makes a striking first impression and an undeniably grand entrance; it is not hard to imagine elegantly dressed ladies and gentlemen descending the steps in centuries past. Fascinating history permeates every corner of this property. The Baroque layout, with its enfilades – the linear sequence of salons whose doors are perfectly aligned on a single axis – creates captivating sightlines from one room to the next. Each salon welcomes visitors with exquisite stucco decoration, original hardwood or natural stone floors, and elegant interiors finished in warm colours or delicate pastel shades. Nowadays, civil weddings can be held in the drawing room with its grand fireplace, as well as in the garden room and on the loggia. In the adjacent music room, an elaborately decorated, star-patterned parquet floor, a hand-painted Meissen tiled stove dating from around 1900 and a historic grand piano from Leipzig’s famous Blüth-

Each guest room is a unique retreat in its own right, thoughtfully furnished with antiques and complemented by state-ofthe-art amenities in keeping with the comforts of modern-day life. Whether in the “Voltaire” single room, where views of the sunrise can be enjoyed, or in the green “Arkadien” double room with its bay window, every room in the manor inspires the imagination with its timeless charm. Just beside the main house stands the coach house, the former post station, now transformed into a guesthouse, offering an idyllic retreat overlooking the historic horse stables and the former estate church. Large double doors open out onto the beautiful garden. The view extends beyond the checkerboard stone flooring to the vine-covered loggia and the approximately 1,000-square-metre

garden parterre, above which a golden weather vane turns gently in the breeze. Beyond this garden lies 3.5 hectares of glorious parkland grounds. Laid out in the mid-19th century in the style of an English landscape garden with sweeping lawns, it merges seamlessly into the neighbouring Fiener Bruch nature reserve. It is a place of exceptional natural beauty. In the autumn, when the mist descends mysteriously across the meadows, or in the summertime, when birdsong fills the air, every season has its own unique delights. The owners cannot contain their enthusiasm for the natural beauty on offer: “Nightingales, kestrels, the unmistakable call of the oriole… Here, one’s inner spirit can come to find peace.” A profound passion and romance define present day life at the manor. It brings together the grandeur of its past with the most beautiful love stories of the present, and now awaits new owners eager to write its next chapter.

WHERE THE SOUL CAN BREATHE

BY M ER L E W I L K EN I N G

he journey to Argyronisos really comes into its own the moment the mainland starts to fade away into the horizon, leaving only the deep blue of the Aegean to fill the view and soothe the senses. As the speedboat sets out on the 20-minute crossing from the coast of Euboea, not only do the waters calm, but so too does the spirit. Here, in the sheltered Gulf of Volos, and nestled between the northernmost tip of Euboea and the Greek mainland, time begins to move more gently. Ahead of the bow, a veritable paradise emerges – its rolling, verdant hills shimmering in the summer light. It is the silvery green of the 2,000 olive trees that likely gave the island its name: Argyronisos, the Silver Island. This 24-hectare sanctuary has been owned by one family for generations. It is a legacy having been carefully nurtured and rooted in a deep connection to nature. The groves are cultivated according to strict organic principles. Back in ancient times, the island was known as Deucalion, named after the son of Prometheus. According to legend, humanity was reborn here after a great flood. Today, those who walk the winding paths between ancient cypresses and wild herb gardens experience a unique, modern incarnation of that renewal. Argyronisos invites a return to inner peace and well-being. Until the end of 2024, the island served for 13 years as an exclusive yoga retreat – a sanctuary for mindfulness and healing. This essence remains intact today. Here, one rediscovers a rhythm often lost amid the everyday pace of contemporary city life. The retreat’s infrastructure offers the ideal foundation to carry this spirit forward under new stewardship, transforming the island into a private place for soulful regeneration. The Shala, at one time a helicopter landing pad, now rises above the cliffs as a temple of silence – a spectacular setting to greet the morning with sun salutations. The architecture, too, follows this philosophy of harmony. Several recently renovated houses are organically spread out across the island’s gently undulating landscape, which stretches around one and a half kilometres in length. Alongside the beautiful main house with its welcoming communal spaces, the three-bedroom hilltop villa forms the heart of the estate.

EDITION 4 . 26 I 81

A place for genuine encounters: A sunshade protects the large dining table of the main house from the heat of the midday sun. By the evening, the space is transformed into the perfect setting for dining under the stars. Here, hospitality is a celebrated way of life – the mild Aegean climate naturally extending the indoors out into the glorious open air.

Once a helicopter landing pad, now a temple of mindfulness: The Shala forms the beating heart of yoga practice and inner balance on the island. Its covered structure, with electric blinds, blends seamlessly into the natural island terrain, offering a sheltered space for contemplation overlooking the sea (above). From here, winding paths lead the way to the individual residences. While Masons House, set directly at the water’s edge, echoes the rhythm of the surf, Stone House, near the historic lighthouse dating back to 1899, offers complete seclusion. The lighthouse itself – a timeless landmark located at the eastern tip – has watched over the Aegean Sea for more than a century. Tucked away just alongside to the main house lies an idyllic little chapel, a place of quiet reflection that deepens the island’s spiritual resonance. Life on the island is shaped by the freedom of the sea. Several private beaches and hidden coves with crystal-clear waters can be found dotted along the entire coastline. Gentle ridgelines invite exploration of this oasis, leading past wild thyme and rosemary, while your gaze is constantly drawn to the endless azure blue surrounding the island. In this way, Argyronisos stands as a testament to

how true luxury today lies in independence. The island is entirely self-sufficient: An onsite solar installation powers the entire battery setup, creating a completely self-contained energy system that demonstrates how modern luxury and ecological responsibility can co-exist. After decades in the same family, this haven is seeking a new custodian. Someone who values silence as much as the vast openness of the Aegean Sea. It is a rare opportunity to write the next chapter of a rich story and longstanding tradition, while breathing new life and moments of hospitality into the island. As the day draws to a close, people gather on the rocks of the western peninsula. Watching the sun slowly sink down into the sea behind the mountains of the mainland, bathing the olive groves in beautiful golden light, one truth is clear: on Argyronisos, the search for what truly matters comes effortlessly to rest.
