ome to roughly 8.3 million people, New York City is the most populous city in the U.S. – a vibrant melting pot that boasts hundreds of museums and hosts legendary events such as New York Fashion Week and the Met Gala. The unique energy of this metropolis is simultaneously inspiring and overwhelming. Drop your gaze from the spectacular buildings that seem to pierce the sky and a very different aspect opens, revealing quiet sanctuaries in which to escape the hustle and bustle. The roof garden of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is airy and delightful at any time of the day, as is the inviting 2.3-kilometer High Line, a public park built on a former railway track. You can also enjoy a picnic with a breathtaking view of the skyline on Governors Island in New York Harbor or spend the night there glamping in a luxurious tent. Looking down at New York from a bird’s eye perspective, you immediately spot the city’s green lung – Central Park in Manhattan, like a rectangle snipped from the surrounding cityscape and filled in with green. The park, which extends for four kilometers from 59th to 110th Street and covers an area of more than 340 hectares, has roughly 18,000 trees. Each year, it draws 42 million visitors – to celebrate a wedding in front of famous Bow Bridge or take a boat ride on the lake. Central Park also boasts kilometers of footpaths and cycle paths and every November, it’s the finish point for the world’s biggest marathon. Some of the paths lead to secluded places like the Shakespeare Garden, where bronze plaques bear quotes from the poet’s works that contain a reference to plants. The New York Botanical Garden is situated further north, in the Bronx. Established at the end of the 19th c entury, it is

known for its exhibitions on nature and plants as they appear in art. The city’s public parks and wooded areas are not just good for rest and recreation, but are crucial for the climate: Roughly 8,000 hectares of natural areas store 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide every year, capture rainwater, filter toxins out of the air and cool the city during the hot summer months. The NYC Parks department has planted nearly a quarter of a million trees since 2016. The goal is to enable at least 85% of city residents to reach a park on foot by 2030. Gramercy Park, for instance, which was laid out in 1830, is private and only open to residents of the surrounding buildings and hotel guests with a key. Popular initiatives aimed at making the city more sustainable include the Liz Christy Community Garden, which was founded in 1973 as New York’s first community garden, and the Bronx Green-Up, which transforms derelict lots into vibrant green spaces and offers gardening workshops. So there’s more to New York than concrete and glass. As it constantly reinvents itself, the city demonstrates how nature and urban living can go hand in hand. Would you like to know more?

Inspired by Mongolian architecture and traditions, industrial designer Patricia Urquiola created Garden Layers for Gan, a collection of mattresses, rugs and cushions for sitting comfortably on the ground. Woven on a traditional hand loom from recycled materials, the items are all weatherproof.

COZY The word “bitta” means pollard in Italian. And in fact, the rope weave backrest of the Grand Bitta Daybed from Kettal is reminiscent of mooring ropes. Despite its density, the weave allows air to pass through freely. Rodolfo Dordoni’s design wonderfully combines a lightweight look with a snug, comfortable place in which to curl up.

Floral Display

The Australian artist Julia Rose creates floral couture, showcasing the beauty of real blossoms. What made you decide to combine f lowers and fashion? To me, flowers are an artistic medium. I combine my experience in floristry with my passion for theater and performance. When designing my creations, I play with texture and color and shape – much like a fashion designer does with fabrics. I want to convey emotions and touch people with my designs. What’s your favorite f lower? Hard to say! Each flower has its own effect and significance. Roses stand for luxury and elegance, meadow flowers for lightness and playfulness. I choose them according to the story I want to tell.

You once said that your love of f lowers began in your childhood and was inspired by your grandmother’s garden. What does your own garden look like? We live on a farm. I’m not a very good gardener but I like seeding wild flowers – to see what comes up. I’ve designed my garden to be a natural habitat, also for insects. Who would you like to work with one day if you had the chance? I’d love to work with Lady Gaga! She has an enormous stage presence and wears unconventional fashions with complete confidence. I enjoy working with people who dare to be extravagant.

How did New York Fashion Week go and what was your most elaborate creation?

What are your plans for the future? I’m currently working on a presentation for the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. I would love to be able to show my art some day at the Met Gala in New York.

BUILDING GREEN PAYS OFF IN THE LONG RUN

Energy efficiency remains a top criteria in Europe For buyers looking to purchase a property in Europe, sustainability and climate protection continue to be a part of the equation. Location, once a significant draw, is now only one decisive factor when determining the value of a property. Energy efficiency also plays an important part – particularly in the face of rising energy costs. In urban environments, gardens and green areas not only help to improve air quality but also act as temperature regulators. In connection with sustainability challenges, green spaces also play a significant role in preserving and promoting biodiversity by providing an important habitat for plants and animals. In urban environments in particular, where natural areas are growing increasingly scarce, green spaces are becoming more and more relevant as a sanctuary for city dwellers as well as for plants and animals. This development is reflected not only in people’s growing desire to immerse themselves in nature, but also in how they decide where to live. The desire to exist in harmony with nature is also a growing phenomenon, and when choosing a home, people want something that reflects their ecological values. Sustainability and climate protection are no longer marginal issues, but have become key factors when looking to buy a property. Although location was once the decisive factor in determining the value of a property, increased environmental awareness is compelling more and more buyers to include energy efficiency as a factor in their considerations – largely also in view of rising energy costs. These trends naturally also have a bearing on the real estate market, and potential buyers are increasingly interested in knowing: How eco-friendly is my new home? Energy performance certificates play a central role here, and

it has become common practice to ask to see them. There are many reasons for this. Sustainable, green construction and climate protection must all be taken into account. But ecological concerns are only part of the picture, which is why potential homeowners should take economic aspects into consideration too. It is crucial to adopt measures to optimize energy efficiency such as improving insulation, installing heat pumps and using solar energy. Such investments do not only stabilize operating costs, they also increase the value of a property and ensure future viability – which is an important consideration in the event that the property is later sold. The 2024/2025 Engel & Völkers Residential Real Estate Market Report for Germany indicates that properties with poor energy efficiency lost considerable value between 2023 and 2024. This finding illustrates the importance of a property’s energy status with regard to market value. The report also shows that investors are increasingly interested in existing properties in need of refurbishment, as entry-level prices, including modernization costs, are lower on average than those for new-builds. This development is leading to a rise in demand for properties with a good potential for appreciation, particularly as such properties are often located in sought-after urban locations. Energy efficiency is no longer a purely technical detail because taking a holistic view of sustainability benefits everyone involved. Those who invest in energy efficiency today create value in the long term – for themselves, for potential buyers and, last but not least, for the environment. Apart from helping to improve quality of life, such investments promote sustainable development that is truly beneficial to all.

Demand is growing, particularly from international investors. Properties in premium locations are achieving top prices of up to €25,000 per square meter. L A S POZ A S Set in tropical rainforest 610 meters above sea level, the enchanted sculpture garden Las Pozas is located roughly seven hours by car north of Mexico City. It is the peculiar legacy of the British poet and arts patron Edward James, a friend of Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, who took surrealism into the jungle. In this very remote spot, he built spiral staircases, towers, bridges and lofty stone sculptures, some of them moss-covered and overgrown, their shapes reminiscent of plants. There’s a river with waterfalls, and some small lakes. This is the kind of garden that invites you to lose yourself in it, a place where fantasy and reality merge. Las Pozas has been open to the public since 1991. Edward James discovered the piece of land in the 1940s and began building the first structures on it in 1949. He continued to work feverishly until his death in 1984.

One of the world’s most famous gardens is located in Pennsylvania, in the borough of Kennett Square: Longwood Gardens. Last year alone, it was admired by 1.6 million visitors. Spread over an area of more than four square kilometers, Longwood boasts over 10,000 species and varieties of plants. The gardens were conceived by Pierre Samuel du Pont, industrialist, philanthropist and scion of one of the wealthiest and most influential families in the U.S. He bought the land in 1906 with the initial goal of saving a historic stand of trees intended for the sawmill. But soon, following his family’s love of gardens and magnificent parklands, and tradition of gardening, he traveled to Italy to learn about Renaissance gardens. Duly inspired, he returned home to create an unparalleled place of splendor and diversity, complete with symmetrical axes, splashing fountains, illuminated fountain displays and a spectacular greenhouse. To get a proper sense of this masterpiece of garden design, which Pierre du Pont opened to the public more than a century ago, visitors to Longwood Gardens should plan to spend the entire day.

MOROCCO

JA R D I N M A J O R E L L E This beautiful garden in Marrakesh is more than a hundred years old. It was created over the course of nearly four decades by the French painter Jacques Majorelle, who was fascinated by the shapes and colors of Islamic culture. In 1917, he traveled to Morocco, then a French colony, where he built a house and began to lay out a garden containing exotic plants from around the world. He painted his walls a shining cobalt blue that later became known as Majorelle Blue. After the painter’s death, the garden was abandoned until the 1980s, when Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé rediscovered it and had it restored. The fashion designer took inspiration from the garden, and the striking blue color appeared repeatedly throughout his collections. After he died, his ashes were strewn in the Rose Garden, but while still alive, he and Pierre Bergé established a foundation to preserve the garden for posterity.

C L A SS I C A L G A R D E N S O F SUZ H O U The classical gardens of Suzhou, situated in eastern China, were built between the 11th and the 19th century. Nine of them were named UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997, including the well-known Humble Administrator’s Garden, pictured here, which covers an area of 5.2 hectares and is the largest. Wang Xianchen, an imperial envoy, began creating this particular garden in 1509 after he was dismissed from his post. The name of the garden, Zhuōzhèng yuán, was taken from a verse praising the simple life by a famous poet from the Jin Dynasty. Water, boulders, plants and buildings interact harmoniously in the retired official’s impressive garden, an outstanding example of Chinese landscape design. By 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was founded, the garden was no longer intact, but it was subsequently rebuilt and has been accessible to the public ever since.

MONET’S GARDEN Strolling through Claude Monet’s garden in France is like submersing yourself in a painting or entering a continuous déjà-vu. The garden is so beautiful that he used it as a model for his most famous paintings. Every day, the artist spent time there planting flowers and studying the cycle of nature and the interplay of light and shadow. Monet’s house and garden are in Giverny, the village in Normandy where Monet settled with his family in 1883. There are two parts to it: an incredibly lush flower garden on one side of the street and a Japanese-inspired water garden on the other. This is where you will find the famous bridge, the one he immortalized in the iconic painting that hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the water lilies that will forever be associated with Monet. They were the inspiration for the roughly 250 water lily paintings that the artist created over the course of his life.

BO BO L I G A R D E NS The epitome of Italian garden design with an incredible view: The Boboli Gardens in Florence are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and closely connected with the Medici family. They were created by Eleonora von Toledo, the wife of Cosimo I de’ Medici, the wealthiest man in Florence at the time, and already ranked among Italy’s most famous gardens in the 16th century. Laid out at the center of the city, the Boboli Gardens stretched south of Palazzo Pitti, the family’s main residence. The grounds contain 288 sculptures, some of them antique, as well as fountains, grottos, an Egyptian obelisk, a giant amphitheater, a historic orangery and countless hedges and cypress trees. Expanded in several phases, this elegant oasis reached its current size (4.5 hectares) in the 17th century. Today, it is one of the city’s most popular attractions and draws roughly a million visitors each year.

T H E BU TC H A R T G A R D E NS A botanical sensation awaits visitors to Vancouver Island off Canada’s Pacific coast. The Butchart Gardens were created in 1904 by Jennie Butchart, who didn’t have much gardening experience at the time. Her goal was initially to hide an ugly quarry that her cement-maker husband had abandoned, by replanting it. This eventually gave rise to the Sunken Garden, the gorgeous centerpiece of the Butchart Gardens today. Over the years, the gardens were steadily extended to include theme gardens with plants and flowers from all over the world, spread out over 22 hectares. In 2004, the Butchart Gardens were declared a National Historic Site of Canada. Still owned by the Butchart family, the gardens are now managed by Jennie Butchart’s great-granddaughter.

SCAMPSTON PARKL AND & WALLED GARDEN

At the historic Scampston Hall estate in North Yorkshire, which has been owned by the same family for decades, the grounds feature the designs of not one but two world-famous landscape gardeners. Back in the 18th century, Lancelot “Capability” Brown, who is regarded as one of England’s greatest landscape designers, created the parkland surrounding Scampston Hall. The gentle hills and broad grassy areas interspersed with lakes and streams, so typical of Brown’s work, can be admired to this day. Directly adjacent to the estate is a historic walled garden, originally created as a kitchen garden to provide the family with vegetables and fruit. The contemporary gardening superstar Piet Oudolf was commissioned to redesign it. The Dutch landscape architect is well-known for his ecologically sustainable aesthetic and masterful use of perennials. The grasses and shrubs change their appearance through the seasons, making the garden a beautiful sight at any time of year. The combination of Oudolf’s very modern approach and Brown’s timeless legacy at Scampston make the estate a popular and attractive destination for gardening fans.

issipation and excess are often part and parcel of a rock star existence. You can easily forget to slow down and take it easy when your life is always moving at top speed. Not so for Sting. The 17-time Grammy Award winner doesn’t spend his time in search of the next kick. On the contrary: He practices yoga and appreciates tranquility. Which also goes to explain why he hasn’t spent his wealth on giant yachts, private jets or other amusements, but has put his money into historic properties where beautiful gardens grow. Places of refuge, they are an invitation to decelerate and follow the rhythms of nature rather than a persistent beat. One such property is Lake House, which Sting and his wife, actor and film producer Trudie Styler, bought in 1990. Surrounded by 24 fabulous hectares of land, it lies in Wiltshire, a southern English county between London and Bath.

For Trudie and Sting, a garden is more than an enjoyable refuge, it’s a way of life. Their children were raised on milk from their own cows, the family kept pigs and chickens and grew the food that they wanted to cook on the stove. No sooner had they laid out the vegetable beds in England when the couple began looking further afield for a place in Italy. After searching for years, they finally found a property in Tuscany about an hour’s drive south of Florence. In 1997, five years after they were married, they purchased the overgrown, rundown estate from an Italian duke. As Sting once jokingly said when he was asked about the price: “We bought it for a song, perhaps two songs, I’m not sure.” According to the Daily Mail, it cost three million pounds. Called Il Palagio, the estate dates from the 16th century and is located not far from the medieval city of Figline Valdarno. The views of the Tuscan hills are breathtakingly beautiful. Sting has described Il Palagio as one of his favorite p laces on earth, saying: “It’s like stepping into a painting.”

Long wooden tables set up beneath ancient trees offer plenty of space for enjoying drawnout meals with family and friends. Trudie and Sting’s grown children bring more grandchildren along each time they visit. The couple try to spend an entire month at the estate in the summer. Last year, they celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary there, the tables decorated with blue hydrangea. Just casting a quick glance over Sting’s tour schedule is enough to make anyone dizzy. His life on the road leads from Detroit to Cape Town to Abu Dhabi. But Sting also always makes time to spend at home in the gardens that he and Trudie planned together, places that literally ground them and serve as a source of inspiration and contemplation. There, they change into work clothes and climb onto a tractor, feeling the earth between their fingers and giving themselves over to the cycle of planting and harvesting, which follows its own schedule and refuses to be rushed by anything. Sting’s love of nature is apparent in his songs, and he often sings about rivers, oceans, fields. In his book “Lyrics By Sting” he describes the view from the window of his home in England and how it inspired him to write

“Fields of Gold,” one of his most famous songs. The house is surrounded by barley fields, he writes, and he is fascinated by the sight of a whole field of grain swaying in the summer wind: “Like waves on an ocean of gold.” Trudie and Sting have turned the lawn in the garden of their English home into a labyrinth of grass. On a bed of stones, the initials T & S immortalizes the pair. It was a 300-yearold copper beech that clinched the decision to buy this particular property back then. Trudie called Sting after going to see the historic house and told him it was in bad shape, would need lots of work, part of the house wasn’t even habitable – but there was this absolutely gorgeous tree. “Get it,” he said. Trudie and Sting have been committed to sustainable gardening and environmental protection for many decades. In 1989, a fter meeting an indigenous leader in Brazil and listening to his concerns, they founded the Rainforest Fund. The organization meanwhile supports 300 projects in more than 20 countries, which work to preserve rainforests, ensure access to clean drinking water and conserve indigenous land. Trudie and Sting are both very active on a global level but they are also committed to

organic farming methods on their own land. Arabella Lennox-Boyd designed Trudie and Sting’s gardens originally, both in England and in Tuscany, and each of them bears the leading landscape architect’s liberal signature. Lennox-Boyd, who lives in London but hails from Italy, is a big fan of symmetry, but she prefers the wild, untamed variety. Rather than looking as if they were laid out with a ruler, her gardens feature playful designs and are full of surprises. The lavender has been known to escape the borders of its bed and the wisteria is nearly impossible to contain because it is so abundant. The first thing Lennox-Boyd did at Il Palagio in Tuscany was to dig up the soil and install a water-recycling drainage system. Then she revived the olive grove, which contained hundreds of trees. For the last five years, however, Trudie and Sting have been working with garden designers Julian and Isabel Bannerman at Lake House, creating gardens and garden buildings. More recently they have also been working on Il Palagio’s grounds, installing fountains and recreating the loggia garden. Sting is very clear about his role whe it comes to the land. “You can only be a caretaker,” he says. “Nothing is really yours. The land

here belongs to the trees.” The olives these trees produce are cold-pressed on the premises. The result is an award-wining olive oil that is sold in the farm shop along with honey from the estate’s own bees, s alamis, prosciutto, fruit and vegetables. And lots and lots of wine. In 2002, Trudie and Sting replanted the wild, 15-hectare vineyard and established the Il Palagio label. In recent years, the pair have enjoyed the support of Riccardo Cotarella, the legendary Italian winemaker who also planted vines for Pope Francis at the traditional papal summer residence not far from Rome. Trudie and Sting produce around 120,000 bottles of Il Palagio wine every year: whites, reds, rosés and sparkling wines. They have also launched an amaro, a bittersweet herbal liqueur called Amante 1530. The wines, whose names won’t just resonate with hardcore Sting fans, include a “Message in a Bottle” Vermentino and a “When We Dance” Chianti. Once a year, those very songs are part of a very special event at the estate: when the iconic artist performs privately for family, neighbors and friends. Would you like to know more?

t is just before sunrise and the cool morning breeze carries the scent of jasmine, lavender, and orange blossoms. Slowly, the orange-red fireball rises into the sky. Around me, tiny birds flutter and sing loudly, as if excited to greet the new day. Quickly, I slip on the thick terry cloth bathrobe and push aside the heavy silk curtains. I step onto the expansive terrace of my hotel suite, with the mirror-like pool just before me, framed by bougainvillea in rich pink and purple, surrounded by ancient olive trees with their silvery shimmering leaves. A sight I can never get enough of. I order a café con leche and enjoy this spectacle for the next hour. I’m staying at Finca Cortesin in Spain, one of Europe’s most spectacular resorts. Getting there is easy: It’s a mere 50 minutes by car from the airport in Málaga, roughly halfway between Marbella and Sotogrande. The 532-hectare oasis offers everything you could possibly want: exquisite cuisine, relaxation by the pool and a golf course on the property for those in search of a little bit more action. There’s also a sensational boutique that carries such a won-

derfully curated selection of pieces from international collections that you almost don’t need to shop anywhere else. The interior of Finca Cortesin is a creative collaboration between Portuguese designer Duarte Pinto Coelho and his Spanish counterpart Lorenzo Castillo, and features an ingenious mix of Portuguese, Spanish, Moroccan and British antiques. A number of the 67 light-filled suites (ranging from 50 to 200 square meters in size) have four-meter-tall ceilings along with magnificent marble baths grouped around a typical patio or inner courtyard. The palatial, white-washed building is two stories high and surrounded by gnarled olive trees and majestic palms. The building was constructed only 16 years ago in the typical Andalusian country-house style and reflects the Iberian peninsula’s rich architectural heritage: The stone floors are originally from an 18th-century Portuguese monastery and the studded antique wooden doors – each one lovelier than the next and a true rarity – were retrieved from historic buildings all around Spain.

Guests who prefer more privacy have the option of staying at one of the hotel’s free-standing villas, which have either four or six bedrooms and their own private garden, the largest of which covers 2,200 square meters. Once you have enjoyed the view from your room and private terrace to your heart’s content, you can arrange for a shuttle to take you to the coast for a closer look at the sea. At Bahía de Casares, a beautiful bay just 1.5 kilometers away from Finca Cortesin, guests can relax at the hotel’s own 6,000-square-meter Beach Club, which also serves up delicious cuisine. For those who prefer not to swim in the sea, there’s a 35-meter infinity pool along the beach. But the best thing at Finca Cortesin are the spectacular hotel gardens, which extend across 23,000 square meters. This masterpiece is the work of British landscape designer Gerald Huggan. Andalusian traditions fuse with modern design here to create a symphony of colors and fragrances. Centuries-old olive trees set the tone, along with vibrantly colored bougainvillea and dozens of white roses. A particular highlight: large interior courtyards

lined with jasmine, lavender and orange trees, which give off their sweet, heady fragrance far into the night. The symmetry of the gardens, the tall, slender palms and the elegant terracotta pots create a harmonious landscape in which you easily lose track of time. The bubbling fountains and the light reflected in the basins of water create an almost meditative stillness – as if nature were whispering to guests that they should stay a while and relax. The hotel’s rich and varied offering of exclusive culinary delights is a universe in itself. There are six restaurants, including REI, the hotel’s signature restaurant, which serves Japanese and Mediterranean influenced specialties, and the Don Giovanni, which specializes in Italian cuisine. Breakfast is served à la carte at the El Jardín de Lutz, the garden restaurant presided over by Executive Chef Lutz Bösing from Germany. At midday, the Beach Club serves delicious grilled meat, fish and seafood right on the beach. And any guests who wish to can work off their meal at the hotel’s own 18-hole golf course.

It all began with rugs more than thirty years ago. Today, the company’s inventiveness and willingness to experiment are as strong as ever. Lenti herself was the driving force behind the company’s tough, durable yarns and fabrics, which are aesthetically pleasing and sustainable too. In addition to indoor and outdoor furniture, the portfolio includes home furnishings and a playful collection produced from recycled materials. Company headquarters are in Meda, Italy, less than an hour’s drive from the design capital, Milan. And the Paola Lenti showroom – how could it be otherwise – opens onto extensive gardens.

What are the challenges involved in designing garden furniture? Creating products that blend in with nature rather than cluttering it up, and making the furniture as comfortable and inviting as anything designed for indoor use. We want to render beauty tangible and fulfill the wishes of discerning clients who are looking for exclusive products. When designing furniture for outdoor use, you have to follow strict requirements with regard to quality, durability and resistance to extreme temperatures or to particular conditions, like on the coast. It’s also important to avoid releasing harmful substances into the environment, and to maintain recyclability. You can’t just take something that was designed for indoors and adapt it for outside. Each space requires its own approach.

Signora Lenti, to what extent do the gardens influence your creativity? The gardens in Meda are a source of inspiration for us all and a place of wellbeing. I have always viewed nature as the most important element in outdoor living. It is at the center of all of our projects. “Outdoor is the new indoor” – would you agree? We design all of our furniture and furnishings to be inviting, long-lasting, comfortable and attractive to look at. We want them to be able to enter into a harmonious dialogue with their

In the 1990s, there were fewer options and not so much available in the way of suitable materials. You were an industry pioneer. What made you decide to focus on products for outdoors?

When we established the company in 1994, most outdoor furniture was made of steel, wood or cast iron – and none of these materials were particularly comfortable to sit on. We wanted to bring comfort into people’s gardens and onto their terraces. So we started looking for suitable fibers. Polypropylene, a synthetic fiber, seemed most suited to our needs. We collaborated with universities and research centers to study its properties, optimize it and adapt it for outdoor use. The result was Rope – the yarn that still forms the basis for numerous fabrics, ropes and textile structures in our collections. It was the first material we developed ourselves.

My sister’s presence in the company is crucial. I’m the creative one, she’s the rational one. I spend my days in the workshop, where my tools are yarns, fabrics and colors. Anna is often on the road, and her tools are her laptop and her Excel charts. I talk to suppliers, artisans and designers while she talks to agents and clients. But we keep each other up to date on everything.

Paola Lenti collections are distributed in over sixty countries, and you recently expanded your presence in the U.S., Mumbai and Dubai. How do you preserve traditional values while simultaneously setting new trends? We have always done what seemed natural to us, and invested in trying to find sustainable design solutions. Our yarn isn’t additionally treated, for instance. Very often, the substances used to make something water-repellent eventually wash off in the rain and end up polluting the soil and groundwater. Our textiles are designed to be environmentally friendly, and they are very versatile. When developing upholstery and other products, we also try to revive traditional artisanal crafts such as weaving, which is at risk of dying out, and we have always managed to keep production in Italy. We are an industrial company today, but we work with tailors, upholsterers, architects, engineers and weavers. We try hard to maintain a purely Italian supply chain.

The Paola Lenti brand is known for its bright colors. How did you develop your sense of color? My sense of color is a gift, something I was born with. I love to experiment. Colors are like notes in a piece of music, what’s important is how you combine them. I love all colors. Sometimes I prefer more ethereal hues, other times I gravitate toward earth tones. Or I investigate the endless shades of green that nature has created – it all depends on my mood. More than thirty years of work has produced a rich vocabulary of color.

Your sister Anna Lenti has been CEO of the company since 2000. How important is it to you to have family support?

What are you focusing on this summer? We will be adding new products to our indoor collection; there will be lots of natural materials, for instance, wood. With regard to outdoors, we will continue to experiment with the fabrics, colors and designs ofour synthetic and technical textiles, all of which are constantly becoming softer and more inviting.

The wellness destination Islands in the Sky will feature cascading pools and gardens overlooking the city.

Dubai is known for its spectacular architecture and visionary projects. Therme Dubai – Islands in the Sky will add another highlight

to the city’s already imposing silhouette. With construction slated to begin in 2026, the wellness resort will spread out over more than 46,000 square meters not far from the royal palace in Zabeel Park. The project was developed by renowned New York architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro for the Therme Group, and is expected to draw some 1.7 million visitors each year. The new structure will rise 100 meters into the sky and feature thermal and mineral pools on stacked terraces, along with botanical gardens that appear to float in the air. During the daytime, visitors will be able to enjoy the various bathing and spa landscapes, and in the evening, the resort will transform into a vibrant venue for cultural events.

Sustainability will also play an important role. Ninety percent of the water in the pools will be recycled and clean energy will fulfill 80% of fresh air and cooling requirements. In line with the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, the project will also set new standards in wellness and urban development. As Robert Hanea, founder and CEO of the Therme Group put it: “Dubai is a city that understands the future must be built with wellbeing at its core.” The Group is represented all over Europe, and Therme Erding in Munich is the world’s biggest spa destination. The new resort in the United Arab Emirates is expected to open in 2028. Would you like to know more?
