Praying Matthew 5:10-13 FOR PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS

Dear heavenly Father,

When our persecuted Christian brothers and sisters suffer harassment, ridicule, rejection, beatings, torture, imprisonment and even death, they are indeed blessed—because the kingdom of heaven is theirs already.

As they are reviled and all kinds of evil is spoken against them falsely on account of Christ, may they be glad and fix their affection on the promise of eternity.

Thank you, Father, that our brothers and sisters endure persecution for the sake of living as salt and light in a fallen world, in order that your kingdom may advance at any cost.

May they be blessed today, and may we be inspired by their example as we stand with them in prayer.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Welcome!

Dear Friends,

Welcome to this year’s Sing Conference, ‘From Generation to Generation’.

We and the whole conference team are excited and grateful for this fresh opportunity to gather, to sing, to learn together. Thank you to all our musicians, speakers, exhibitors, sponsors and special guests who have come to help us in that.

This year is particularly special as we celebrate the launch of The Sing! Hymnal — the result of writing and championing hymns for 25 years.

Throughout history, God’s people have always had curated bodies of songs to carry forward: the Psalms of Israel, the hymns of the early church, and the great hymnals of centuries gone by. As we open The Sing! Hymnal for the first time together this week, we join that great chorus of generations past, and hope to encourage and equip the generations to come.

We pray that each day of the conference provides a thoughtful and invigorating journey through the rhythms that in turn shape all of our lives to the praise of our Creator. For there is no greater privilege, for us and our children, than to worship the Lord and serve Him together.

“‘to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

Keith and Kristyn

SPECIAL THANKS TO VOM

Getty Music would like to extend our deepest thanks to our Official Missions Partner, The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM). Because of their partnership, we have been able to expand the vision and reach of the Sing! movement beyond what we would have ever dreamed possible, resulting in the equipping of thousands of churches and leaders. Their friendship and support have energized us during this season of ministry, and we could not be more thankful.

The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) serves persecuted Christians in the world’s most difficult and dangerous places to follow Christ. Pastor Richard Wurmbrand and his wife, Sabina, founded VOM after being imprisoned for their Christian witness in Communist Romania. Since 1967, VOM has been dedicated to inspiring all believers to a biblical faith by telling the stories of persecuted Christians, thereby inspiring a deeper commitment to Christ and the fulfillment of his Great Commission, no matter the cost.

We encourage you to connect with the VOM team at their booth in the Sing! Village. Pick up your free 2026 Prayer Calendar and discover how you can pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ and lead others to do the same.

Keith and Kristyn Getty have joined modern and traditional hymns with liturgical elements in a new hymnal designed to serve both corporate and personal worship. The Sing! Marking a decade of the Sing! vision

Hymns are the heart language of the church, used to sing truth to the Lord and to one another in every season of the soul. This has always been the way. When we look to the Psalms, the great songbook of the Bible, we find God’s blueprint for singing. The Psalms sing to the valleys of human sorrow and the heights of eternal hope. They remind us of a salvation history and a salvation song we must not forget. They teach us to lament and to rejoice. They root our lives and give wings to our witness. They map out the character of the Lord, lifting our eyes to all that he is and has done.

ABOUT KEITH & KRISTYN

Keith and Kristyn Getty are hymn writers, GRAMMY®-nominated artists, and the founding leaders of the Getty Music organization who hail from Northern Ireland. Their greatest musical passion is writing and championing great hymns of the church.

Their songwriting journey began in 2000 when Keith wrote the tune for “In Christ Alone” on the back of a Northern Ireland Electricity bill. Many songs, albums, and—most importantly—four daughters later, they still wake up each morning amazed that they get to spend their days crafting melodies and words to encourage and inspire the people of God.

Keith and Kristyn love fostering creative collaborations. They established Getty Music with a view to the year 2050 in the hope that individuals, families, and churches would celebrate the beauty of Christ-centered hymnody. Their hymn writing team includes a growing array of contributors who are as committed to family and the local church as they are to the craft of songwriting. The group’s songs include 45 of the top 500 titles sung in US/UK churches in the last year, and their original publishers, Integrity Music, estimate that more than 100 million people around the globe sing this music every year in a diverse array of contexts. Their hymns uniquely cross genres, finding expression in styles from contemporary to classical as well as folk and global. Keith and Kristyn are the creators and chief editors of The Sing! Hymnal, a joint project of the Getty Music team and Crossway releasing in 2025.

Keith and Kristyn enjoy filling their lives with songs of the Lord, whether at home with their daughters, in the sanctuary of their local church, or in all of the places around the world they’ve had the privilege to visit—from Carnegie Hall to the Grand Ole Opry House, the Kennedy Center to Sydney Opera House, with performances for Presidents, Prime Ministers, and television specials on PBS, CBS, BBC, and TBN in between! They host the annual Sing! Conference in Nashville, TN (named after their 2017 book), and are now particularly excited to share Sing! events on each continent, including their recent visit to South Korea to help lead music at the Fourth Lausanne Congress in South Korea.

The hymn “In Christ Alone,” co-written by Stuart Townend, has received numerous accolades, from being named the second most beloved hymn in the UK by the BBC to being selected as one of the top five hymns of all time by the British Hymn Society. Keith was the first contemporary Christian musician to be awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2018 for his contributions to music and hymnody. Their other acknowledgments include one GRAMMY® nomination, one mainstream Billboard #1, two GMA Dove awards (with 18 nominations), three honorary doctorates, and the honor of being named Fellows of the Royal School of Church Music.

Kristyn’s creativity has led to wider opportunities, such as recording the entire ESV Bible as an audio version for Crossway. Her biography of Joni Eareckson Tada written for children was released in 2024, and two new books for kids are 2025 releases, Pippa and The Singing Tree and We Sing!.

Keith and Kristyn are especially excited about the Getty Music Foundation, a non-profit organization with a mission to educate hymn writers and spur biblical worship in under-resourced areas of the globe.

Together with their four daughters, Keith and Kristyn live between Northern Ireland and Nashville.

Swallows

In early summer still they come

And bless us with their song, Circling and wheeling like our thoughts, Their flight tugs at our restless hearts That we might leave all harms and hurts To be where we belong.

And come September they will fly And skim the autumn air

Whilst we in ‘swallow-flights of song’

Give wing to prayers through which we long To be where saints like swallows throng Round heaven’s haven there.

Sure as ‘the swallow finds her nest

Where she may lay her young’

Our songs and sighs like swallows fare, Dipping and skimming through the air, And every sigh becomes a prayer And every prayer a song.

CONSIDER THE SWALLOW

KRISTYN GETTY

When the Cuckoo is calling over woodland and valley

And the Tern and the Swallow flies over our bay

Then it’s longing I’ll be for the land of my father Where Bann and black water sweep down to Lough Neagh

“The Tern and the Swallow”. Written by eel fisherman Neilly Coney (1918-1988) in 1974, County Tyrone

Afew years ago my Irish gardening friend texted me in Nashville, “The swallows have arrived and that means you must be coming home soon!” In the early summer it is our rhythm to travel back to Northern Ireland to be closer to our families for a season. Our four daughters count down the days and slip into their Irish life much like the birds flown north for the summer.

On arrival, we quickly see the swallows, circling the air with breath-taking precision, catching insects for their hungry broods. While hosting summer writing weeks there with our hymn-writing team we liked to write outside. Swallows would almost skim our heads, racing back and forth as we worked on new hymns for the hymnal!

Just before the wee small hours of an Irish summer morning the dawn chorus of these songbirds begins. From such an early hour they are busy nesting and feeding and nurturing. It takes

a pair of swallows up to 1,200 journeys to build a nest. The eggs hatch after a few weeks. The babies grow fast, needing to be fed hundreds of insects a day. Listening to their parents’ songs and watching them fly, they do the same.

A few weeks after we leave for America again, they leave to winter in South Africa, 6000 miles away. Similar patterns happen from North to South across the globe. Weighing no more than a few pennies, they make a perilous journey, one of the longest migrations on earth. The Sahara Desert is often the hardest leg. With the sudden sand storms and infrequent resting spots it is a miracle that any survive.

They gather in flocks, young and old, seeking safety in numbers and foraging together. They somehow remember the route there and back again, generation after generation following in their paths, often returning to the buildings, even nests, they were in before.

Written into their design is also the instinct to sing; in courtship, in nesting, in defense, in flight, in contact with other birds. Spirited melodies flow free into the air, weaving together their daily life stories. And with it another cadence of God’s creative voice flows into the everyday spaces of our lives. The sound of His wonder, the motion of His faithfulness, the beauty of His wisdom to us in all of life. “Holy, holy, holy Lord God Almighty, early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee.” It calls us to sing, according to our design.

True hope is swift, and flies with swallows wings

wrote Shakespeare. The swallow has long been seen as a herald of a new spring and so of hope and life. In folk culture the swallow carries both the longing for home and the boldness of a new adventure. British ornithologist Stephen Moss writes, “The swallow knows no borders or boundaries. It crosses countries and continents, bringing joy to the lives of so many people. Whether we live in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, it reconnects us, each spring, with the natural world.” (Swallow: a Biography)

They have inspired great literature. To the 19th century poet Alfred Lord Tennyson their soft and sudden movements inspired his perception of how grief moves over time - “Short swallow-flights of song, that dip/Their wings in tears, and skim away.”

(“In Memoriam”, Section XLVIII). John Bunyan writes of swallows,

This pretty bird, O! how she flies and sings, But could she do so if she had not wings? Her wings bespeak my faith, her songs my peace; When I believe and sing my doubtings cease.

(“Upon the Swallow”)

As we worked on the hymnal, the swallow became a symbol of all these efforts. Our deep-rooted calling to sing together to the Creator, the nurturing of each new generation in the way and song of the faith, retracing the steps of those who went before us, holding fast to the gospel way across many miles around the world, shaping the everyday rhythms of life in the praise of His mercy and care.

In Psalm 84, King David yearns to be like the swallow, that he and his children could nest as they did - near the altar of the Lord, near His presence. There is no better life and health for us than this. He reminds us of the unequaled privilege we have in being welcomed in together before the Lord in worship.

How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts!

My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise!

These verses finish with a blessing. There also are two more blessings sung in the Psalm. They each speak to the three journeys of The Sing! Hymnal and also of this year’s conference.

1. “Blessed are those who dwell in His house ever singing His praise” is shown in the liturgy of the service in day one, our gathering times of worship.

2. “Blessed are those whose strength is in Him, in whose heart are the highways to Zion” leans into the liturgy of the Christian life in day two, the pilgrimage of the Faith for each generation.

3. “Blessed are those who trust in Him” is the heart of the liturgy of the life of Christ in day three, the One who saves us and sends us.

Our friend and Irish artist Ross Wilson* has painted three beautiful settings of swallows to illuminate these journeys. The swirl of movement, the vivid colors, the energy of old and young swallows together portray life brimming, unstoppable, otherworldly. You will also see a little swallow sketched by Ross in the forward of the hymnal.

We hope this year’s Swallow art brings a steadiness and simplicity of purpose to the daily call we each have to be near the Lord, to follow Him according to His design for us

(Jeremiah 8:7), to worship Him wherever we are - a call for us and for our children and for every nation. Shaping that worship is the sweet offering of melodies and lyrics we bring to the Lord that we may be filled with hope in believing in Christ. For as the sight of a swallow brings joy to the weary sailor who knows land is near, He is the homeward longing of every heart.

“I know that longing for music so well…Sometimes I have thought that this very ‘music-thirst’ is part of God’s gentle discipline, leaving us with that thirst instilled, just that we may turn afresh to that which stills all longings, the music of his name.” (Memorials of Frances Ridley Havergal, p197)

Previously he was awarded a BEM by HRH Queen Elizabeth II for his services to charity, community outreach, and work amongst marginalised and underprivileged communities within Northern Ireland, and further afield in Rwanda. His work is contained in many public collections: The National Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain London, Jesus College Cambridge, The Fogg Museum Harvard, The British Museum London, HRH King Charles III, The Palace of Westminster London.

Ross Wilson is an advocate of community outreach through creativity, he believes passionately in creative interaction with young people, that creativity is an important part of well-being, a key dynamic within spiritual and educational development, helping to foster original ideas that bring value and meaning into a young person’s inner life, that in turn will encourage and evolve hope, through self-belief, ambition, and vision.

BEHIND THE ART: FLIGHT OF SWALLOWS | ROSS WILSON

What inspired your approach in how you created these three artworks?

The inspirational starting point for the ‘Flight of Swallows’ is scripture. In Psalm 83:3, we read these words: ‘Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young - a place near your altars, LORD Almighty, my King and my God.’ The swallow’s presence close to the altars of God connects into the importance of sanctuary, a place of divine security and peace, a place where the most vulnerable can know refuge to raise their young. This text expresses longing for the nearness of God, the swallow’s flight becomes a directional symbol, of finding a home, a place of destination in God’s presence and pattern.

What inspired the process?

I drew visual inspiration from three of my favourite painters, Vincent Van Gogh, Pierre Bonnard, and Claude Monet, artists who celebrated Spring, Summer, and the continual wonder of the world that surrounded them. Artists who paid homage to the cycle of new life creation, to the seasons, to the return of things, the arrival of longer light filled days, the uplift of blossoms, and the earthly renaissance and regeneration that comes with spring, and the return of the swallows.

How do you hope people will engage with the art?

I hope for a visual and spiritual connect, that these works, based on this beautiful little hopefilled, acrobatic bird, known for its faithfulness, for its returning, for its darting and gliding, with its shimmering circle of sound, will help engage us with a sense of wonder, a sense of renewed illumination and optimism, that we will be directed deeper into the surrounding creative presence of God.

The swallow’s seasonal faithfulness, its long resilient voyage of return, marks the coming of rebirth, and as we look heavenwards in wonder, enchanted by the swallow’s rhythmic patterns of flight, we can sense at times, within ourselves, a deeper more innate longing, for the promise of of our eternal home.

Why is art important in worship?

Art, creativity, in its many forms, is a reflection of God’s image in us, it is part of our spiritual DNA.The first description we have of God, in the first verse of scripture is as ‘Creator’, The Maker God, who creatively spoke things into being. We often neglect our creative identity within worship, sidelined by routine, by the mundane and the mediocre. I believe worship should be a soul based dynamic, creativity is part of that dynamic, part of God’s grace exchange in us, which should be central to life, church community, and worship.

In past distant times, biblical based truth teaching and storytelling, was often visualised, through art, to a mainly illiterate population, still today, visitors, pilgrims, and tourists, travel long distances to stand in wonder before some of the most profound works of art, which visualise biblical truth, The Last Supper, The Sistine Chapel, The Pieta, the mesmerising wonder of Stain Glass, the great architecture of Cathedrals, this is the power of the visual, which should not be neglected.

I believe the Arts, and creativity, at their highest level, within church community, can help reflect God’s character, attributes of truth, beauty, and order, enabling us to glimpse more of God’s holiness, as we engage in worship towards Him. Creativity is a powerful medium that can enhance the act of worship, it can encourage a deeper more wonder-filled approach into the truth of God’s word, it can also help foster deeper and holier personal encounters with God..

Each Christian is reborn into a life of creativity, into a life of worship, and each of us into our own unique orbits of influence, of day to day ministry. I believe that rebirth is the most powerful creative experience, and it is our responsibility by it, to openly influence others, this is part of the art of worship.

Francis Schaeffer put it best:

‘No work of art is more important than the Christian’s life, and every Christian is called to be an artist in this sense. The Christian’s life is to be a thing of truth and also a thing of beauty in the mist of a lost and despairing world’ .

BAND INRESIDENCE

CityAlight

CityAlight is a ministry of an Anglican church on the side of an infrequently busy road in Castle Hill, Sydney. The church, unsurprisingly, is called St Paul’s Castle Hill. Most of us involved are volunteers. We are not professionals. The vision of CityAlight is to write songs with biblically rich lyrics and simple melodies for the Christian church to sing. We are very pleased to admit there is nothing groundbreaking in what we do. There is nothing especially new or unique or fashionable. We are not on the forefront of anything and do not pretend to be. (It is probably better to be three hundred years out of date than three.) Instead, we are doing what the Christian church has done since Jesus and his disciples sung a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. For thousands of years now Christians have been writing simple songs about the great truths of the gospel for their churches to sing. And we are very honored to join in that long tradition, investing it with meaning to people in this generation.

Most churches around the world are not large. Some figures tell us that the average number in Australia is about 70. That means these are churches without large music teams or complicated sound equipment. These are churches with one guitar, or no guitar, one organ, one trombone, two singers – something like that. And we want to partner with those faithful congregations. Our vision is to resource them with simple songs. There is nothing on earth like the sound of a church singing, big or small, ancient or modern, skilled or not. The sound of a church singing has preceded almost every great revival in church history. The church is God’s witness and representative on earth. Is there any wonder that a tremendous power comes about when the representative voice of God in the earth is singing.

We desire to get out of the way so the truth upon which all our songs are built can properly shine. We pray that the lyrics and melodies of these songs would fix eyes and hearts and minds on Jesus. We pray that our songs might join the many thousands of songs written through history to encourage the church, and when they have played their role, to make way for the next ones. And we rejoice that one day the only name left standing will be the name of Jesus, as it should be.

Psalm 84:4

E THE WORSHIP SERVICE

very Lord’s Day, I share in the high and holy privilege of gathering with my church and witnessing a living miracle. A people once dead in sin, now raised to life in Christ, congregate to worship the God who saves. It is nothing short of remarkable!

From the call to worship to the benediction, the entire worship service is filled with windows into wonder. Each element— prayer, Scripture, singing, confession, preaching, and the Lord’s Supper—is rooted in Scripture, traced through history, and meant for our good. This weekly rhythm shapes us, reminding us who God is and who we are as his people.

And yet, even the holiness of these moments can sometimes feel so… ordinary. Some Sundays we walk through the doors with scattered thoughts, heavy hearts, or lives weary from the weight of the fall. We shuffle through the doors praying for just one word of encouragement, or a single truth we can cast our hopes upon. If we have eyes to see, we will behold the beauty and nearness of Christ in our midst. Walk with me for a moment through our worship service, and let me show you what I see…

A Beautiful Liturgy

In his great kindness, the worship-seeking God calls his people to worship. We begin the service by reading a passage of Scripture through which God himself invites both great and small, welcomes young and old, receives the strong and the weak to gather in his holy presence and enjoy communion with him and his people. In response to this gracious call, we offer full-hearted adoration for who he is and how he has crowned us with steadfast love and mercy (Psalm 103:4).

We give thanks to the Lord for the great things he has done, both in history and in our lives (Psalm 105:1). We sing glad songs of salvation, honest songs of lament, hopeful songs of trust, and passionate songs of praise. We confess our darkest sins to God, believing that he is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). We are assured that at the right hand of the everlasting throne sits Christ the Lord, our great High Priest, whose precious blood grants us access to draw near to God (Hebrews 4:14–16).

We pray together and call upon God. We read Scripture publicly (1 Timothy 4:13) and listen to exposition of the Word as it alights on our hearts and minds. We are seated at the table of the King as welcomed children, drinking from the cup of his salvation, and eating the bread of his provision. And we sing again— we sing songs of God’s wisdom and ways, hymns of his salvation and grace, and spiritual songs of life in Christ. With each thread woven into the fabric of the worship service, we glorify God.

A Hymnal for the Worship Service

Whether the worship service at your church includes more or fewer of the elements practice in my own, I pray that each one is seen in Scripture and led with pastoral care. In every generation, one of the great challenges is to ensure that the worship of God remains a priority—carefully ordered in our churches, families, and lives.

The new Sing! Hymnal has been thoughtfully arranged with this in mind. It features three overarching liturgies, the first of which centers on “The Worship Service” itself. The hymns are set in a sequence that tells the story of our faith, beginning with the glory of God, moving through our need for mercy, lifting our eyes to the finished work of Christ, and leading us to respond with hearts renewed. Each section serves as a guide, helping worshipers follow the unfolding gospel narrative. The subject headings act as a breadcrumb trail, drawing from biblical and historical liturgies shaped by a rich

variety of church traditions, each one pointing our hearts toward the God who is worthy of all praise.

A good liturgy is more like a window than a wall. A worship service is not meant to be admired from a distance as a well-constructed structure. Rather, it is designed to be looked through, so that together we might behold the beauty and glory of Jesus Christ.

This coming Lord’s Day, I pray that as you prepare to share in the high and holy privilege of gathering with your church, you would stand among the saints and marvel anew at the miracle unfolding before your eyes. You are called to worship the Living God, numbered among a people who were once dead in sin, but who have now been raised to life in Christ.

It is nothing short of remarkable!

Blessed are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion.

Psalm 84:5

P HYMNS AND THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

richly, teaching and admonishing

erhaps you agree with me that, apart from the Scriptures, the rich tapestry of Christian hymnody offers us the greatest treasure trove of theological and devotional material on earth. Occasionally, there are times when my heart or mind is too weary to digest a Scripture text, but the liquid truth of a great hymn slips into my system. When I lean back to meditate, various passages of memorized Scripture often cycle through my mind; but nearly as often I can hear the syllables and the sounds of “Be Thou My Vision,” “Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Me,” or “Day by Day and with Each Passing Moment.”

Is that your experience too?

God’s Word is inspired and infallible in a way that a hymn cannot be, but good hymns flow from God’s Word and are interrelated tools in the Christian walk. The Bible says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you

one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16 ESV).

Think of it like this...

The memorization of Scripture is a lost art, but it should be a daily practice. It doesn’t take long to quote a verse aloud several times a day, and it doesn’t take many days before that verse becomes familiar enough for us to say by heart. Whether we’re parents, worship leaders, pastors, or simply friends who want to encourage others, memorized Scripture is one of our greatest tools. It transforms us through the renewing of our minds.

We find similar strength in knowing by heart the classic hymns of yesteryear and today. That’s one of the advantages to having a hymnal in hand. As we sing from the words and notes, the lyrics have a way of slipping into our minds and engraving themselves in the library of our memories. I’m

prone to underline and highlight my hymnal just as I do my Bible. My Bible and my hymnal rest together on my devotional desk.

Do you want to revisit the moment when you found Jesus and refresh the joy you felt that day? That happens when we sing “And Can It Be” or “Just As I Am.” The power of music goes beyond nostalgia. It rekindles the embers of our first love. The Gospel songwriter Fanny Crosby never forgot how she came to Christ during a revival meeting in 1859 as the congregation sang the final verse of Isaac Watts’ hymn, “Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed.”

Do you want to ask God for freshness in your faith and an uplift for your personality. Try singing, “Fill Thou my life, O Lord, my God, in every part with praise.” I had not known that hymn until Cliff Barrows quoted it to me by heart as his lifelong personal prayer. Now it’s mine too.

Do

you need a cleaner, clearer mind, one filled with the knowledge of the wisdom and will of God?

One of the easiest ways of asking for this is saying, “May the mind of Christ my Savior live in me from day to day.”

What about preparing for Sunday?

How do you get yourself and your family into the best frame of mind?

After all, it’s no easy thing to get a handful of children up, dressed, fed, and off to church on the one day when they might prefer sleeping in. I still recall from childhood how we sing, “The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord.”

Speaking of church, I grew up before the days when children were segregated in their own worship services. I sat with my parents on the pews and listened to my pastor preach. He was very good, but I remember few of his sermons. But from childhood, I’ve loved the hymns I learned during those years of Sundays—“Great is Thy Faithfulness,” “He Leadeth Me,”

“It is Well with My Soul,” and “Come, Thou Almighty King.”

Deuteronomy 6 tells us to share the truth of God with our children when we sit at home and journey down the road, when we get up and when we go to bed. The most natural way of filling the hearts of our youngsters with God’s Word is to do so naturally, conversationally, and consistently. “Let me show you a verse I read today in the book of Romans.”

When we fill our homes and cars and vans with the classic hymns,

we are accelerating the process. As I haul my grandkids around in my truck, I almost always have my playlist of hymns. I want them to learn the melodies and lyrics. I want earthy music to waft heavenly truth into their hearts.

We need other hymns during times of sickness and suffering. When my wife, Katrina, was nearly bedfast with multiple sclerosis, the classic hymns comforted her, along with her Bible and her well-worn copy of Daily Light. As her caregiver, the same hymns strengthened me: “Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor ” and “Like a River Glorious.”

Near the end of her life, I was lifting her into bed when I heard her muttering something. Listening closely, I heard her say, “My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim; to spread through all the earth abroad the glory of Thy name.” Shortly afterwards, we sang “O For a Thousand Tongues” around her deathbed, and then at her memorial service.

Those words were deeply embedded in her mind because it was one of her “lifelong hymns.” Without being critical, much of the newer Christian music has a short lifespan. Churches sing a song for a few weeks or months, and then it passes into oblivion. Some of these songs have their place, but worship

leaders must understand the importance of developing worshipers with sets of lifelong lyrics. Some songs are meant to be sung from generation to generation.

A good hymn is a miniature Bible study, versified for easy remembering, and set to music. Except for the memorization and mediation of Scripture itself, nothing has sustained me in my spiritual walk like the timeless hymns, both ancient and modern. I suspect you feel the same.

The classic, majestic, multi-themed biblical hymns of yesterday and today have never been more needed.

They express our praise, sustain our spirits, articulate our prayers, confess our sins, lessen our burdens, unite our homes, and serve as a glorious sympathy to strengthen our souls.

O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!
Psalm 84:12

SINGING THE LIFE OF CHRIST

Phil Ryken

How great is our God? This is the question that Paul answers at the end of chapter three in his first letter to Timothy, when he writes, “Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness.” The grandeur of the apostle’s phrasing helps convey the glory of the gospel—the revealed mystery of Jesus Christ.

Then the apostle proceeds to say, in effect, “Sing with me: how great is our God!” I say “sing” because the short poem that Paul gives us appears in the form of a Greek hymn: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory (1 Tim. 3:16).

Like many modern and ancient hymns, this little lyric provides an apt summary of the life of Christ, which is our theme for this day of Sing!

Paul begins by saying, he was manifested in the flesh. God the Son had lived in all the splendor of his deity from eternity past. Then he became a man, identical to us in his physical body. This is the mystery of the incarnation: God the Son became the God-man. By taking upon himself human flesh and blood, he became one person with two natures: a divine nature and a human nature.

Everything Jesus did on this earth he did in a real human body. The events of his Passion were physical events. His cheek was kissed by his betrayer. His face was spit upon. His brow was pierced by thorns. As the Scripture says, “Christ suffered in the flesh” (1 Pet. 4:1).

Christ also died in the flesh. It was a real body that was nailed with real nails to a cross of real wood: “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree” (1 Pet. 2:24). Then it was a real body—a corpse—that was taken down from the cross, wrapped in linen, and laid in a tomb. God the Son did not just appear in a body; his body was crucified, dead, and buried.

God the Son did not remain in the grave, however: he was vindicated by the Spirit. In other words, the Holy Spirit confirmed and proved that

Jesus Christ is God’s own Son and the Savior of the world. The Spirit did this most of all through the resurrection. God the Father raised God the Son from the dead by the power of God the Holy Spirit.

When the Spirit did this, he confirmed that everything Jesus ever said or did was true. As the apostle Paul explained on another occasion, Jesus “was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead” (Rom. 1:4).

After Jesus was raised by the Spirit, he was seen by angels. This refers to the principalities and powers of the unseen world, especially those glorious, supernatural creatures who worship God in heaven and serve him on earth—the angels.

We know from the Gospels that some of the angels were witnesses of the incarnate Christ. Angels sang at his birth and attended to him in the wilderness. But the angels were also eyewitnesses of the risen Christ. They were the first to tell the disciples that Jesus was alive (Matt. 28:1-7).

Next, Jesus was proclaimed among the nations. Having seen the risen Christ, the apostles preached the risen Christ. Before Jesus ascended into heaven he had said to them,

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:18-20).

The apostles began to fulfill this commission at Pentecost, but that was only the beginning of the worldwide work of the gospel. Jesus Christ was preached in Jerusalem, then in Judea, Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth. Jesus is preached among the nations to this very day. The gospel is going to the nations as the good news about Jesus Christ is proclaimed to every tribe, people, and language.

Wherever Christ is proclaimed, he is believed on in the world.

As soon as the apostles began to preach the gospel to the nations, others believed as well. When the first church in Jerusalem preached the gospel, “the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47). It has been that way ever since. It is doubtful whether a single day has gone by since the day Jesus rose from the tomb without people coming to him in faith, giving their lives to him.

This statement—“he was believed on in the world”—is for the present as well as the past. God is still bringing men, women and children to salvation in Christ. Our own faith is one proof that Jesus is believed on in the world.

Paul concludes his hymn by saying that Christ was taken up in glory. This line seems to refer to the ascension. In fact, the same Greek verb is used in Acts to describe the way Jesus ascended to heaven (see Acts 1:9). One day Jesus will return to this earth the same way that he left, trailing clouds of glory. What better way to end a hymn than with the glorious praise of the glorious Christ?

Perhaps the only thing left to say is this song reveals a mystery “of godliness” (1 Tim. 3:16). In other words, this ancient hymn promotes the worship of God and encourages the daily exercise of true religion. When the famous preacher John Chrysostom proclaimed this mystery of godliness at his church in Constantinople, he concluded by saying, “Let us live in a manner worthy of the mystery.” This is good counsel. The truth about Jesus Christ demands a response.

What does it mean to live a life that is worthy of the mystery of godliness?

Since Jesus “was manifested in the flesh,” let us glorify him with our bodies. Let us use our hands to help, our lips to bless, and our minds to serve.

Since Jesus was “vindicated by the Spirit,” let us pray that we too will be vindicated on the Day of Judgment. Let us ask God to prove that we belong to him by giving us glorious resurrection bodies.

Since Jesus was “seen by messengers,” let us join the angels and the apostles in their worship around his throne.

Since Jesus was and is “proclaimed among the nations,” let us testify to his grace, declaring the gospel to everyone we love and sharing in the world-wide work of missions, so that all peoples might praise him.

Since Jesus was and is “believed on in the world,” let us trust him with all our hearts, for salvation as well as for everything else we need.

Last of all, since Jesus was “taken up in glory,” let us await his return with eager expectation, longing for the day when we will see his great mystery for ourselves.

WHY WE WORSHIP

ALISTAIR BEGG

Welive in a largely self-absorbed world, and with that self-absorption inevitably comes a low view of God. While it’s not incapable of occasional flashes of altruism, ultimately, fallen humanity is imprisoned inside its own ego. Rather than living to the praise of God’s glory, we live to the praise of our own.

This self-centered worldview is opposed to a God-centered understanding of things. It doesn’t square with Scripture. The Eighth Psalm is framed with the refrain “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” (vv. 1, 9).

The Bible’s approach to life is fundamentally different from that of individuals who don’t heed its truths. Scripture begins with God and His glory, not man with his need. It’s only in sufficiently answering the question “Who and what is God?” that we are able to address ourselves. Calvin comments, “Man never achieves a clear knowledge of himself unless he has first looked upon God’s face, and then descends from contemplating him to scrutinize himself.”

A right knowledge of God is the foundation for praise. Psalm 8 helps us to know God and then to know ourselves in relation to Him.

Who Is God?

The opening verses of Psalm 8 describe God in terms of both His majesty and His creative power.

The Majestic God

The context for this psalm makes its truths all the more astounding. We see its author, the majestic king David, bowing beneath a greater Majesty, the eternal God. It would be a lot like sitting beside the late Queen Elizabeth, the longest-serving British monarch, and hearing her confess in worship, “O Lord, how majestic is your name!”

Our English translations place two occurrences of the word “Lord” beside each other. The first time, each letter is capitalized (“Lord)”; in the second, only the L is capitalized (“Lord”). And that’s because they are two different words in the Hebrew.

The first word is Yahweh (or Jehovah). It’s the name Moses received when he asked God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” and God responds, “I Am Who I Am. … Say this to the people of Israel: ‘i am has sent me to you.’” (Ex. 3:13–14).

God’s name is the revelation of Himself. Bound up in His name is an explanation of all that He is: wondrous and magnificent, creator and sustainer of everyone and everything, eternal, infinite, unchangeable in His power and perfection, and so on. Irrespective of people’s reaction, God is everlastingly majestic. He is the Majestic One.

This majestic name of God, we notice in verse 2, is opposed by “the enemy and the avenger.” And this opposition is silenced not by man’s own power but by frailty: “Out of the mouths of babies and infants, you have established strength.”

Isn’t this how God works? It wasn’t by its strength, after all, that Israel defeated Goliath but by means of a God-dependent shepherd boy (1 Sam. 17:1–11, 23–45). Or consider Paul’s words to the Corinthians:

“Consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.” (1 Cor. 1:26–29)

When we acknowledge ourselves to be frail, we can embrace an identity stronger than anything we can muster by our own merit.

The Creator God

If the first two verses depict a king bowing down before a Majesty, verses 3–4 describe the shepherd-boy-turned-king lying on his back, pondering the vastness of the night...
