The smell of fresh cut grass. The sight of the brilliant azaleas, dogwoods, and pines. The refinery of the men and women in the gallery. So many memories of growing up in Augusta around one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world. Growing up, the only sport I ever really knew was golf. We didn't watch football, basketball, or baseball. Nope. Every weekend we watched a golf tournament. My father is an avid golfer. When I was a little girl, my sister and I would head out to the tournament with our dad each spring during the week of The Masters. We would weave through the sea of shoes and legs until our little heads reached the ropes around the green where we had a front row seat to the world’s greatest golfers. Tiger Woods in his first Masters appearance as an amateur in 1995 and then his first Green Jacket in 1997. As local teenagers, we spent our Spring Breaks sitting on the hill under the 6th tee with a perfect view of the 16th green. We didn't need to travel the world that week. The world came to us. These are my memories of growing up in a community that hosts a world class golf tournament. As an adult, I am blessed to live in a community that hosts a PGA golf tournament. The RSM Classic allows us to enjoy a beloved game in a beautiful setting on the Georgia coast. The Davis Love Foundation hosts this event while at the same time supporting charities focused on children and families in need. Together, we are building memories as a community. Whether you are serving on the course, working behind the scenes, or chasing your favorite player around the links, let me encourage you to rally together to welcome the world of golf. Over time, it leaves a legacy in the hearts of the community.

It’s time once again to enjoy the beauty of the the Golden Isles in the fall and the events that it brings with it. SUGGESTED EVENTS Whiskey, Wine, and Wildlife September 9th through September 12th at the Westin Jekyll Island Hotel. One of the Golden Isles’ newest annual festivals, Whiskey, Wine, and Wildlife is a celebration of beverage tastings and cuisine from some of the south’s best chefs along with local culinary superstars. You will also get to enjoy and experience our coastal wildlife up close through Jekyll Island Boat Tours and wildlife demonstrations at the hotel. For tickets and more information, go to WhiskeyWineandWildlife.com. Georgia Tribute Festival September 16th through September 19th at the historic Ritz Theatre in downtown Brunswick. This show festival is a tribute to Elvis Presley, a name so recognized that we need only to say Elvis, or “The King”. Art Under The Oaks September 25th and 26th from 10 am-5 pm in Postell Park at the Saint Simons Pier Village. This is the premier Arts and Crafts Event held in The Golden Isles. There will be more vendors at this event than in any other during the year. This is a must-see event. For details, go to GlynnVisualArts.org/festivals. Southern Soul’s Firebox presents BBQ On The Bluff September 30th through October 2nd at Gascoigne Bluff Park on Saint Simons Island. This is an event featuring dozens of pitmasters, chefs, and farmers from around the South and locally. The best barbecue in the country will be here on Saint Simons this weekend. There will be live music by Night Fever. The Firebox Initiative is a charity created by the founders of Southern Soul Barbecue to help service industry employees in financial need due to illness, accidents, or natural disasters. Under the Oaks Run The USATF sanctioned 13.1 Half Marathon will start at 7:30am at Summer Waves Waterpark on

Jekyll Island followed by a 10K at 7:45am and a 5K at 8:15am. Participants run a breathtaking course that goes from the beaches to the marsh and under the majestic oaks of Jekyll Island! Brunswick Rockin’ Stewbilee Saturday October 23rd, 2021 at the Mary Ross Waterfront Park in downtown Brunswick, this festival features Brunswick stew cooking teams from far and wide, competing for the title of best stew in the country. In addition to sampling all the excellent stew recipes, there will be live music, a motorcycle ride, a pooch parade, and a classic and antique car show. BRAIN An Interview with DR. MORRIS PICKENS WE SPENT TIME ASKING LOCAL SPORTS PSYCHOLOGIST, DR. MORRIS PICKENS, FOR TIPS & TRICKS HE SHARES WITH HIS PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES.

Q A player has hit the ball in an unintended

position. What would your advice be in order to refocus for their next shot? 1. Slow Down. Players should never rush on the golf course. 2. Address the ball without a club in your hand. This will help you visualize all possible shots. 3. Look in all possible directions and trajectories. Don’t get locked in to looking only forward and up. 4. Choose the shot you want to hit. Make sure in this selection that you consider potential trouble if the ball comes out “through or long” on your intended line in case the ball comes out great or “hot.” 5. Pick a specific target once you have chosen your shot. Don’t just “punch out.” Punch out to a specific target in the fairway.

Q What can a player do to maximize their golf game?

There are a lot of ways to answer this question. Let me start by saying you don’t have to hit 310 yard drives every hole, make four 20 foot putts every round, or hit towering 4-irons over water to a tucked pin. Are these possible? Yes! Are these fun? You bet. But they don’t guarantee great golf. Great golf is about being extraordinary at the ordinary things. Great golf is about not wasting shots. Here is a list of a few things I call the 5 No’s of the game: 1. No penalty shots off the tee. 2. No 3-putts inside 40 feet. 3. No bogeys with a wedge from your approach to the green. 4. No bogeys on a par 5. 5. No doubles or worse. If you can accomplish these 5 things, you will shoot a 75 or better each round!

Q I work with many professionals and frequently get asked, “What are the pros thinking of when they tee off?”

Well, like you they are thinking they want to shoot a low score or break 70 (maybe 80 or 90 for you) or get off to a good start or some other result. But unlike you, that’s not all they are thinking - they are focusing on the keys that will lead to those results. A “key” is something that you believe will help you play well. It is a controllable action that leads to desired results. Examples of a key are great separation between shots, commitment before you walk into a shot, or walking slow all day keeping an even tempo. So thinking about the result you want is completely normal, it’s just incomplete. It doesn’t tell you what to do. It’s way more important to focus on the keys that will produce the result than just the result itself.

Q What are some productive key thoughts from some of the PGA players?

1. Compete. Compete. Compete. 2. Tempo. Tempo. Tempo. 3. Nothing! Nothing will stop me today. I will think great all day. 4. Invite the challenge. 5. Play the course. (Not the score) 6. Win the internal battles, wait on external results. 7. Play, think, act like a champion today. 8. Simple = Success. 9. I overcome. I don’t complain or whine. I overcome. 10. Commit. Execute. Accept. Repeat.

He is also the author of Learn to Win: One Shot at a Time, Learn to Win: A Major, and The Winning Way in Golf and Life. In addition to coaching athletes, Dr. Pickens offers performance advice to a wide variety of corporations. His mission statement is to glorify God by helping others passionately pursue their dreams.
