Earlier this year, many of us thought the virus would bring a brief pause in our lives. As time progressed, reality set in that we might not actually be on an a break but in the middle of a transition. A transition to a new normal. And it has left us all feeling a little uncertain. Kindness matters. One might consider the opposite of kindness to be cruelty. Is it possible that in our current world, the opposite of kindness feels like judgement? When someone is unkind, we can write it off as a bad day or a thoughtless act. Judgement, however, feels like an assault on our character. Someone taking issue with our values and personal beliefs. I implore you to dig deep and find your acts of kindness. Kindness matters. We are all doing the best we can. We are trying to make unprecedented decisions for our personal lives, our families, jobs, schools, churches, and our community at large. Your decisions may be very different than your neighbors. Show kindness. Support one another. In this time of transition, use kind words. Make kind choices. Show acts of outrageous kindness. It could make all the difference in the world for just one person. And if we unite in kindness, it could just make all the difference in our entire community.

The Golden Isles A DAY IN THE LIFE For both locals and tourists, there is a cornucopia of fun things to do in The Golden Isles. Below is just a small sampling of how you could fill your day on the Island, and it only scratches the surface of everything that is available. Please keep in mind that the following are just some of the popular choices of many in the area and it is not meant to be an exhaustive list. There is so much more to see and to do, all of which are equally fantastic. Follow along on our journey on a clear, crisp day in the Golden Isles!

Enjoy the Sunrise

At this hour, head out to the Pier Village on Saint Simons so you can catch one of the most gorgeous sunrises ever displayed over the Atlantic Ocean. Relax on one of the benches by the water in the Neptune Park area which stretches from the Pier to the Lighthouse.

7:30AM

Breakfast at Palmerâ€™s Cafe

Up the Village sidewalk, visit Palmer's Village CafĂŠ for breakfast. This quaint little diner serves up amazing breakfast food created by a classically trained chef. Travel & Leisure Magazine once named Palmer's pancakes as the 4th best in the whole country.

Visit the Lighthouse

After a delicious breakfast, stroll down to the pier and follow the sidewalk to the Lighthouse. Visit the Gift Shop to buy a ticket to climb the Lighthouse stairs to the top. The views are magnificent!

Catch the Island Trolley

Head back down the sidewalk towards the pier to catch the Island Trolley. For $20, it will take you on an hour journey around the island, hitting points of interest and historical sights. It includes a stop and walking tour of Christ Church and its historic ground.

Brogen’s at the Pier

After a great deal of walking, you will be ready for an island lunch. You won't have to walk far to get to Brogen's at the Pier. On this pleasant afternoon, take advantage of Brogen’s comfortable outside seating, while taking in a relaxing view of the ocean. Brogen's is famous for having one of the best burgers on the island, along with other equally good traditional American food, plus they have a delicious Bloody Mary.

East Beach on Saint Simons

It’s time for the beach! After lunch, head to your vacation home and change into your beach wear. Take a drive to East Beach and dig your toes in the sand. Spend a couple of hours swimming in the ocean or unfold your chair to relax while soaking in some sun.

Get Ready for the Evening

Most of us could stay on the beach all afternoon. At some point, it’s time to return to your vacation home and change for dinner.

Dinner at The Half Shell at the Pier

For a casual family dinner with great service and even better cuisine, head back down to the Pier to The Half Shell. A tucked away local gem, The Half Shell serves a variety of options from steak to seafood. Make sure to get the Butter Cake dessert before you leave!

Sunset Cruise

To top off your day of great food, fun and frivolity, drive over to Jekyll Island, and go down to The Wharf to catch a Dolphin Sunset Cruise. You may need to reserve a spot in advance because these cruises fill up fast. The smooth boat ride and the breath-taking sunset are the perfect combination for total peace and serenity. Rest assured, when you get back home, you will sleep like a baby!

When speaking of Hometown Heroes during this pandemic, we would first like to recognize and thank all of the doctors, nurses, and medical and hospital staff who have worked tirelessly to keep people in our community safe and alive. We are so grateful to each one of you for all of the hard work and sacrifices you made during this difficult season. During this time, we also had many people step up and go above and beyond the call of duty to serve our community. We like to call these people heroes just as well. It would take an entire book to highlight all the heroes behind the scenes. We invite you to meet 6 unique people and learn how they served the Golden Isles during the pandemic. Thank you to all of our Hometown Heroes!

A successful local Real Estate Broker for Deloach Sotheby's International Realty, Chandra is also a lover of animals. During the Covid crisis, she spent many hours working with the non-profit group â€œNo Kill Glynn County." Together with other volunteers, she raised money, networked to transport dogs to rescues, and found adopters in order to find every animal in the Glynn County Shelter a loving home before they had to shut down for the Covid crisis. Chandra personally donated 10 Adoption Fees and, at the start of the crisis, 33 dogs were adopted. In addition to this crisis work, she donates a percentage of each real estate sale she makes toward saving more animals. She frequently highlights ads featuring animals ready for adoption. Her good and selfless work has saved the lives of countless animals! Thank you, Chandra!

Scott is the radio host of Straight Talk, our daily radio show for the Golden Isles. He has worked hard keeping everyone informed and up to date about the latest developments in the COVID-19 crisis and other national news incidents originating in our community. He worked many extra hours to provide this most crucial service to the citizens of The Golden Isles. As in previous emergency situations, such as hurricanes, Scott was once again one of the most trusted sources of information in our area. Thank you, Scott!

J'Deane is a schoolteacher at Glynn Middle School and an important cog in community affairs. She upholds the highest standards of professionalism. J'Deane represents all of the teachers who worked tirelessly this past spring in an unprecedented transition from the classroom to virtual learning. Keeping our students on track with online materials was not for the faint of heart! Jâ€™Deane has previously been named Teacher of the Year by three different organizations. She is also a loving wife, the better half of Scott, and mother of two children, both of whom are successful and outstanding citizens. Thank you to Jâ€™Deane and all of our loving teachers in the community!

Firebox Initiative F. Griffin Bufkin, Kitty Sapp, and Harrison Sapp are the creators and coordinators of Firebox Initiative. This 501c3 initiative was born out of Southern Soulâ€™s own tragedy when the building burned down ten years ago. The goal is to provide a helping hand to fellow service industry professionals in need of emergency assistance and to provide scholarship opportunities. For such a time as this! Firebox Initiative helped provide for the many service workers who suffered tremendous losses due to Covid shutdowns. They also delivered free lunches and dinners to emergency personnel and essential workers including doctors, nurses, health workers, police, fire, and EMT workers. Thank you to these three heroes and Firebox Initiative!

Messy morning hair and steaming coffee. No alarm clocks, no plans, and little bare feet scrambling across the house for morning snuggles and breakfast orders. Slow starts, and nowhere to be. These summer days stretched long and open in front of us as far as we could see. Endless and infinite. The hours filled with nothing. Sidewalk chalk. A walk around the block. Books on the couch. Play Dough. A bike ride when we could swing it. Snacks and make believe and giant messes. Giggles and smiles. Whining and tears. Hungry bellies and stacked dishes. We felt slowness this summer in a new way. When we started, it seemed impossible to get to the end. Time was hard and boring, and we grieved what we were missing. Somewhere along the way, though, in the midst of dishes and painting rocks, and reading the same books again and again, we let ourselves sink down into the slowness. It folded itself around us like a warm blanket, and we pulled it close around our shoulders cozy and satisfied. In the slowness, we stumbled upon a bubbling, then a streaming, then an overflowing abundance in the pure ordinariness of our lives. Beauty and loveliness and excellence and honor - right here in our mundane, ordinary, and average. Because it turns out, in the slow, ordinary, unimpressive space of our most stripped down lives, God is still growing good and beautiful things. Selah for that.
