Carrying excess weight isn’t just a cosmetic concern— it can significantly impact your overall health. Obesity is linked to various medical issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure, joint pain, and even certain cancers. It can also affect mental well-being and reduce life expectancy.
While many attempt to lose weight through dieting, exercise, or medication, research indicates that individuals with severe obesity have less than a 1% chance of achieving and maintaining a healthy weight through these methods alone. In contrast, weight loss surgery has proven to be the most effective long-term solution for substantial and sustained weight loss.
Bariatric surgery not only aids in weight reduction but also offers significant health benefits. It can lead to the remission or improvement of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea, and arthritis. Moreover, studies suggest that weight loss surgery may lower the risk of developing at least 13 different types of cancer.
Modern weight loss procedures are minimally invasive. All are performed using keyhole surgery, often as day-stay only procedures. Patients often return to work within a few days, making the recovery process relatively quick and manageable.
At The Surgery Gold Coast Weight Loss Surgery Clinic, we have over a decade of experience in performing these procedures safely and effectively. Our dedicated team is committed to supporting you on your journey to better health.

— Editor —
December always arrives faster than seems reasonable. One minute we’re making lunches and hunting for missing school socks, and the next we’re being asked to bring a plate, wrap a Secret Santa gift, attend 14 end-of-year events while remembering who we’ve forgotten to buy for.
The festive season has this strange double energy: chaos on the surface, connection underneath. Most of us are tired – very tired – but we still turn up. We still make room at the table, still answer the group chat, still find a way to mark the end of the year, even if it looks nothing like the events we see on tv.
This issue of Get It reflects this reality more than the glossy version. There’s Archer’s artwork helping sick kids feel a bit less alone at Christmas. There’s Jan, proving that strength in your sixties looks nothing like the stereotypes. There are the women caught
between caring for kids and parents, managing responsibilities that don’t pause just because the calendar says festive. And then there’s the small but mighty fact that girls are out-earning boys –a rare moment where the story tilts in their favour.
What I like about these stories is that they’re not wrapped up neatly. They’re real, layered, sometimes messy. Pretty much like this time of year. They remind us that most people are doing their best with whatever energy, time or emotional bandwidth they have left.
So if your December isn’t all twinkly lights and calm afternoons, that’s normal. If it’s a mix of good moments, annoying ones and the occasional lie-down, that’s okay too.
Take what you need from this season, and ignore the rest. There are no prizes for doing Christmas perfectly. So enjoy it, your way!

There’s something about summer that shifts our internal rhythm. The days stretch a little longer, the evenings linger with soft golden light, and life feels just a touch lighter. As the warmer weather settles in, we’re given a natural invitation to move, breathe, and reconnect with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.
Summer is one of the most powerful seasonal resets we get. Warmth itself is regulating; it relaxes tense muscles, softens our nervous system, and encourages us to step outside of our routines. With sunlight comes serotonin, that gentle lift in mood that reminds us we are allowed to feel good. And with longer days comes opportunity.
So how can we make the most of it, authentically, simply, and in ways that truly support our mental wellbeing?
Start with small outdoor rituals. Morning walks, barefoot moments on the grass, or sipping your first coffee outside. These tiny acts of presence anchor your nervous system and set the tone for the day.
Lean into water. Oceans, rivers, pools, or even a cold afternoon shower. Water recalibrates us. It washes away mental noise and helps us drop back into our bodies.
Movement becomes joy again in summer. Try sunrise swims, evening bike rides, shaded hikes, paddleboarding, or community outdoor yoga. You’re not exercising for performance, you’re moving because it feels good.
Create connection moments. Warm weather invites spontaneity: twilight picnics, family BBQs, long conversations on balconies, weekend markets. Social connection is one of the strongest predictors of resilience and emotional health.
And finally, let your schedule breathe. Slow down where you can. Choose rest when your body asks for it.
Summer isn’t just a season, it’s a reminder that lightness is allowed. Embrace it. Let it soften you. Let it fill your cup again.
Got a question for Dee?

What I wish I knew before I turned 67
At 67, I’m proud to be one of the oldest at the gym rather than the youngest in a nursing home. And I want you to know, this isn’t genetics, luck or expensive treatments. It’s the result of simple, consistent choices that any woman can make starting today.
Consistency beats perfection every time I see too many women wait for motivation or try to do everything perfectly. The truth? A balanced routine you actually follow beats sporadic gym sessions every time.
What to do: Aim for a good mix of cardio and strength training at least four times a week. This doesn’t mean you need to spend hours at the gym—a 45-minute session makes a real difference. The key is showing up consistently, not waiting until you feel motivated or conditions are perfect. Schedule your workouts like appointments you can’t cancel. Confidence grows every time you keep a promise to yourself.
Self-care is strength, not vanity Real self-care isn’t about perfection or deprivation. I follow a skincare routine because it makes me feel good. I nourish my body with protein-rich meals, stay hydrated, and practice meditation for mental clarity. And yes, I still enjoy my occasional glass of wine, because you can’t miss out on the things you love.
What to do: Stop thinking of self-care as all-or-nothing—it’s about balance. Prioritise the fundamentals: good nutrition, proper hydration, quality sleep and stress management. But also give yourself permission to enjoy life. Book that health check. Take time to breathe and reset. Treat your body and mind with kindness, not restriction.
Strong women inspire or intimidate-keep going anyway
My wrinkles are real. My stretch marks are real. But so is my strength, my energy and my vitality. I lift weights so I can lift my suitcase when I travel. I build muscle so I can keep hiking and ballroom dancing. I move my body because I want to live with freedom, not limitation.
When you show up vibrant and strong in your 60s, you challenge what society expects. Some people will criticise. Others will ask how you did it. Remember: their reaction says more about them than about you.
What to do: Find your community. Surround yourself with women who are also choosing strength over shrinking. Whether it’s a gym class, walking group or online community, having support makes all the difference.
“YOUR FUTURE SELF IS COUNTING ON YOU. MAKE HER PROUD.”
The truth nobody tells you Ageing well isn’t about looking younger-it’s about feeling powerful, capable and ready for whatever life brings. Your 60s can be your strongest decade yet, but only if you start treating your body like it matters. Don’t wait for a wake-up call. Start with one small change today. Because the woman you’ll be at 70, 80 or 90 is being built by the choices you make right now.
Jan Herdman is the founder of Ageless Transformations and creator of The Vitality Circle, helping women over 50 build strength, confidence and vitality through sustainable fitness and lifestyle changes.
Hearts of gold:
Archer’s design brings hope to sick kids this Christmas
This Christmas, nine-yearold Archer from Queensland is sharing a little extra joy with families facing one of the toughest experiences imaginable: having a child in hospital.
Archer is one of 11 young patients whose artwork has been transformed into festive wrapping paper and Heart Tokens as part of BIG W’s annual Christmas fundraiser for the Queensland Children’s Hospital Foundation. His cheerful design, complete with Santa, a present and a cookie, captures the magic of the season and the hope that comes with healing.
For two and a half years, Archer has been treated for Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. His journey has included chemotherapy, blood transfusions, surgeries and long stretches in hospital. Recently, he reached a milestone moment many families dream of. He rang the bell at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, marking the end of his active treatment.
During his time in hospital, Archer found joy in the creative programs run by the Queensland Children’s Hospital Foundation. These activities, funded by community donations, gave him moments of normalcy and connection in an otherwise overwhelming time.
His mum, Marta, says the Foundation became a lifeline for their family. “Two and a half years ago, our lives turned upside down. The Foundation was there through every step, from providing emotional support to creating special moments for the kids. After spending a Christmas in hospital, it feels like such a gift to be celebrating this one at home, together.”
Funds raised through BIG W’s Charity Wrap and Heart Tokens go directly to the Queensland Children’s Hospital Foundation, helping support programs that bring joy, comfort and relief to sick children and their families. This year, BIG W has also donated an additional $20,000 to support these initiatives.
Foundation CEO Lyndsey Rice says the need for support continues to grow. “Each year, the hospital treats more than 110,000 children, and one in three come from regional or remote areas. Many families spend the holidays far from home. Thanks to the generosity of the community, we can help make that time a little brighter.”
For Archer and his family, that generosity means something simple and profound: the chance to spend Christmas surrounded by love, laughter and good health once again.

Caught in the middle: The growing pressure on Australia’s sandwich generation
Across Australia, more adults – especially women – are finding themselves squeezed between caring for their children and ageing parents. They’re part of what’s known as the Sandwich Generation: people juggling school drop-offs, doctor appointments and late-night phone calls, all while trying to keep up with work and their own lives. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Thousands of Australians are living this reality every day, balancing the needs of two generations while putting their own wellbeing last.
GROWING PRESSURES ON CAREGIVERS
Caring for both kids and parents often comes on top of full-time work. A 2025 report found that caregivers spend almost 30 unpaid hours each week supporting their families, leaving little time for rest, hobbies or self-care. The emotional and financial strain can be enormous. Many face rising household costs, medical expenses
and constant time scarcity. Over time, that pressure can lead to burnout, poor nutrition, and even physical symptoms like headaches, weight gain and high blood pressure. Common challenges include workplace sacrifices, strained relationships and social isolation, feelings of guilt, financial stress, and loss of identity.
HOW TO HELP YOUR FAMILY (AND YOURSELF)
Balancing competing responsibilities can feel like an endless juggling act, but a few small shifts can make a big difference.
STREAMLINE HOUSEHOLD ROUTINES
Daily chores can quickly become overwhelming. Try meal-prep services, grocery delivery or ready-made options to save time and mental energy. Even simple tools like shared family calendars or rotating task lists can lighten the load.
MANAGE PHYSICAL STRESS
Constant lifting, carrying and running around can take a toll. Listen to your body –seek professional help for aches and pains before they worsen. A physiotherapist or chiropractor can help relieve strain and improve mobility.
PRIORITISE YOUR APPOINTMENTS
Use a digital calendar or colour-coded spreadsheet to keep track of medical visits, school events and personal time. Schedule your own check-ups and rest periods the same way you’d schedule appointments for your loved ones – because your wellbeing matters too.
CARVE OUT TIME FOR YOURSELF
Solitude is not selfish, it’s essential. Even half an hour of quiet reflection can recharge your energy. Whether it’s a cup of tea on the porch, a short walk, or listening to music, make those moments part of your routine.
FINDING BALANCE IN THE MIDDLE
The pressures of caregiving are real, but they don’t have to define you. With planning, boundaries and self-compassion, you can care for others and yourself. After all, the Sandwich Generation is proof of extraordinary strength -- but even the strongest need support too.
GIRLS ARE OUTEARNING BOYS,
and here’s how parents can help them stay ahead.
By Molly Benjamin, Founder of Ladies Finance Club
When it comes to finances, new research has found that girls across Australia are earning more pocket money than boys, and they’re saving it faster, too. In a cost-of-living crisis, it’s encouraging to see, as it shows that the next generation is writing their own story around money.
Yet, what can be all too common is that somewhere along the way, money confidence starts to fade in girls. By adulthood, women are less likely to negotiate, invest, or take financial risks. It’s a pattern we see in the gender pay gap, as well as in superannuation savings. Women fall behind financially.
As a financial educator, I see this all the time. Boys are encouraged to take risks, try, fail and learn. Girls are praised for being neat, disciplined and sensible. We talk to boys about growing wealth and talk to girls about becoming good savers. Over time, that difference can shape how we negotiate, invest, or even talk about money.
Recent findings from the Spriggy Economy Report, which analysed the habits of more than 790,000 Australian kids, shed light on this early money story. It found that girls are actually out-earning boys ($1.03 vs $1.00), which is the reverse of the adult gender pay gap, where women earn just $0.88 to the dollar. Australian kids collectively earned $286.3 million this year, with pocket money growing 11 per cent faster than wages. But while girls are thriving financially in childhood, social conditioning soon teaches them to be cautious rather than bold, to save carefully rather than build confidently.
The key to changing this lies in simple, practical money lessons at home. Ones that build independence, confidence, and choicemaking skills early. Parents can help stop that slide by focusing less on outcomes (“Did you save it?”) and more on confidence (“How did you decide that?”). It’s about giving kids, and especially girls, permission to make choices, mistakes and plans with money.
One simple way to build this foundation is the three piggy bank method, something I’ve used for years to help kids visualise how money works:
How digital pocket money works
01 Schedule pocket money, choose how much you want to pay your kids and how often.
02 They can view their balances and keep on top of how they’re managing their money.
03 Pocket money gets paid regularly from your Parent Wallet to their Spriggy cards or to their Savings.
• Piggy bank 1: SPEND: the ‘freedom’ jar. This teaches kids choice, value and the joy of earning something yourself.
• Piggy bank 2: SAVE: this builds patience, planning and the reward of delayed gratification.
• Piggy bank 3: GIVE: this fosters generosity and empathy, connecting money to meaning.
You don’t need fancy tools to try this at home. A few piggy banks, jars or envelopes work perfectly. What matters most are the conversations that you have with your kids around them: Why save? What feels worth spending on? Who or what do we care enough to give to?
Teaching kids how to use money, not fear it, is one of the most valuable gifts we can give. Because when children grow up knowing they can make choices, plan ahead, and trust their judgement, they carry that confidence for life. Girls may have the financial lead right now, but it’s up to us to make sure they keep it, not just in childhood, but well into adulthood.

From boardroom to belonging
Howard Campbell never imagined a life helping others. For decades, he had been climbing the corporate ladder, thriving in high-pressure management roles where results mattered more than relationships. At 68, he admits he “had little time for people” who didn’t share his drive.
Success had been his focus, and with it came a certain blindness. He rarely considered the struggles of those around him until semi-retirement slowed the pace and gave him time to reflect. “I realised many people around me, including family and friends, faced mental health and substance challenges I had once overlooked,” said Howard.
Determined to understand and make a difference, Howard began searching for ways to help. That’s when he discovered the Certificate III in Community Services at TAFE Queensland. Enrolling was the start of a deep personal journey. “I was amazed that at this late stage in my life I could gain insights I’d been blind to all my life,” he said. “Understanding mental health and addiction challenges has been profound. I now see people I once judged differently and I can actually help.”
“I had no intention of going beyond the Certificate III, but the journey was so rewarding I had to continue to Certificate IV,” he said. Today, Howard works as a Support Worker—a role he finds deeply fulfilling after decades of success in business. “I feel like I’m finally contributing to something meaningful. And that’s a feeling you don’t outgrow,” said Howard.
This sense of purpose has brought him a peace and fulfilment that his high-powered corporate roles could never provide.
Howard’s TAFE experience
Howard’s decision to study at TAFE Queensland was pivotal in his career shift. The Certificate III in Community Services provided him with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for his new path.
TAFE Queensland’s Southport campus offers a range of courses in community services, including counselling, youth work, child health and family intervention,
individual support and mental health. These programs are designed to equip individuals with the tools to make a positive impact in their communities.
The supportive learning environment at TAFE Queensland, coupled with practical placements, ensured Howard was wellprepared to transition into his new role. His experience highlights the importance of vocational education in facilitating career changes and personal growth.

From rosacea to pore size, skin tone and texture, redness and wrinkle, all of these elements are directly addressed with one simple product.
For those comparing Gouri to traditional fillers, it’s important to understand the difference:
• Traditional fillers add volume to targeted areas (e.g., lips, cheeks).
• Gouri works on a deeper level, stimulating collagen production to rejuvenate the skin evenly and naturally.
Think of Gouri as an overall skin quality booster, perfect for those seeking a refreshed, radiant appearance without obvious signs of “having work done.”
Diminishes redness, fine lines, pore size and skin texture. Gouri is a one stop product that actually delivers what it claims.
PicoSure vs other laser treatments
PicoSure is an advanced picosecond laser technology that treats various skin concerns, including tattoos, wrinkles, acne scars, and pigmentation like sunspots and freckles. Instead of using heat, it delivers ultra-short energy pulses that shatter pigment particles through pressure waves, stimulating collagen and elastin production with less damage to surrounding tissue. This results in improved skin texture and tone with minimal downtime.
How it works
• Ultra-short pulses: PicoSure uses pulses lasting a trillionth of a second, which is 100 times shorter than traditional nanosecond lasers.
• PressureWave technology: The ultra-short pulses create a powerful photomechanical impact that breaks down pigment and stimulates the body's natural healing processes without using intense heat.
• Collagen and elastin production: By gently disrupting the skin, the laser encourages the production of new collagen and elastin, leading to a smoother, firmer complexion.
• Focus lens technology: A proprietary lens can be used to convert laser energy into gentle pressure waves that activate cell signaling, a process that helps to restore youthful skin.

What it treats
• Tattoos (including dark and stubborn inks)
• Pigmentation: age spots, freckles, sunspots, and melasma
• Acne scars
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Stretch marks
Benefits
• Less heat, less damage: The pressurebased technology minimizes damage to surrounding tissues compared to heatbased lasers.
• Minimal downtime: Treatments are comfortable, and patients can typically return to their normal activities soon after, though some redness may occur.
• Suitable for most skin types: The PicoSure Pro laser is considered safe for all skin types.
• Effective results: The treatment can lead to significant improvement in skin tone and texture.

The power of affirmations
How simple words can rebuild your self-esteem
By Kristen MacDonald
Feeling good about yourself sounds simple, but often it’s the hardest thing to do. From the moment you look in the mirror, you might notice everything you wish were different instead of what makes you uniquely you. That first thought can set the tone for your day—your confidence fades, your mindset turns negative, and your inner spark starts to dim.
Before you’ve even stepped outside, your day can feel like an uphill battle. I’ve been there—ignoring my true self, overlooking my kind heart, my bright smile and the quiet strength that’s always been there.
As a young girl, I faced many challenges, but the biggest was bullying. It shaped my school years and chipped away at my confidence and ability to stand up for
myself. Sadly, that lack of confidence followed me into adulthood, showing up in relationships and self-doubt that held me back for years. When your voice feels silenced, even small struggles can feel enormous, and it’s easy to lose sight of where to turn.
Then, in 2020—when the world stood still— I discovered affirmations. Words began to form in my mind, turning into short, powerful phrases that reminded me of who I was. Writing became my outlet and my healing. As I wrote more, I started to change. Affirmations helped me believe in myself again. They reminded me that I matter, that I’m capable, and that anything is possible.
That’s what I love most about affirmations: their quiet power to change how you feel about yourself, day by day. They carried me through my darkest moments, helping me rediscover the person I’d lost and giving me the courage to chase what once felt impossible.
In late 2022, one of those “impossible” dreams came true—I published my first book of affirmations, Reflection in the Mirror – You Are Enough. It’s a collection of messages about self-worth, confidence, belief, and having a voice. Since then, it’s reached readers across schools and communities, helping students stand tall against bullying, social media pressure and self-doubt. The book has given people hope, strength, and belief that they matter—that their voice deserves to be heard.
This is the power of affirmations: to restore hope, build strength, and remind us that anything is possible when we believe in ourselves.
A few affirmations to keep close
I can do anything.
I control my own life.
I believe in myself. This is my life.
“Always believe in yourself— your kindness, your true inner self. It will guide you day by day.”
“Embrace growth and positivity. Remember who you are. You’ve got this. Believe, and you will go far.”
“Believe in yourself and who you are. It’s your life to live— you have so much to give.”
Kristen MacDonald is a writer, author and card designer dedicated to inspiring confidence, kindness and self-belief through her work.
The Morning After Rituals Everyone Should Live By
Whether you have been celebrating with friends or simply enjoyed one too many wines at dinner, the morning after often shows up on your skin before it hits anywhere else. But with the right rituals, you can bounce back looking fresh, glowing and ready to take on the day. Registered Nurse Samara Searle shares her go-to post-party skincare and wellness routine for restoring your glow from the inside out.
“Your skin is always the first to show signs of a big night,” Samara says. “Dehydration, puffiness and dullness can all set in quickly. The good news is that with a few easy steps, you can reset your skin and body and get back to looking your best.”
1
Preparation is key
Samara believes the best morning-after glow actually begins before the night out. “Preparation plays a massive role in prevention,” she explains. “In the weeks leading up to big events or party season,
By Samara Searle, Nurse
investing in treatments like chemical peels or skin needling can make a huge difference. These treatments help boost collagen, refine texture and support your skin’s ability to bounce back quickly. When your skin is healthy and prepped, it recovers faster and holds on to that posttreatment glow, even after a long night.”
2
Rehydrate, inside and out
The first step, Samara says, is always hydration. “Alcohol and salty foods are major culprits for water loss. Start your morning with a big glass of water and add electrolytes if you can. This helps rehydrate your cells and flush out toxins.”
For your skin, she recommends applying a hyaluronic acid serum followed by a nourishing moisturiser. “This combination plumps the skin and brings back that dewy finish.”
3
Red light therapy
If you wake up puffy, Samara swears by red light therapy. “You can use a red light therapy mask at home the morning after a late night, or if you really want to treat yourself, nothing beats a Healite II session at your clinic. It helps reduce inflammation, and it feels incredible after a big night out.”
4
Cleanse gently and reset your barrier
“It is tempting to skip cleansing when you are tired, but your skin needs it most after makeup and late nights,” she says. Samara suggests using a gentle cleanser followed by a barrier repair serum or cream. “The aim is to restore balance, not strip your skin further.”
5
Support your body with essential fatty acids
Finally, Samara encourages giving your body the support it needs to recover. “Opt for essential fatty acids before and after a night out, such as omega oils. These can help reduce inflammation, support liver function and improve sleep quality after drinking. All these small habits help your body feel rested faster.”
Whether you are battling a skin hangover or an energy slump, Samara’s rituals are simple, effective and designed to help your body bounce back. “It is all about balance,” she says. “Enjoy the night, but make sure your morning after is full of self-care.”
HOW TO SORT OUT YOUR HORMONE HEALTH IN 2026
How to rebalance your hormones and feel like yourself again 1 3 2 4 5
By Steph Lowe
Hormones act as the body’s internal communication system, influencing almost everything: energy, sleep, mood, metabolism, skin, digestion and reproductive health. But in a fast-paced, high-stress world, that delicate balance can easily be disrupted. The good news is that with a few smart nutritional and lifestyle shifts, you can help bring your hormones back into alignment and feel more grounded, energised and in control.
Start with blood sugar balance
Stable blood sugar is the foundation of healthy hormones. When glucose levels spike and crash, cortisol rises in response. Over time, this can interfere with sex hormone production, disrupt your thyroid and leave you feeling exhausted or irritable.
Focus on real, unprocessed foods and build each meal around quality protein, healthy fats and slow-burning carbohydrates. Simple swaps like replacing toast with eggs and avocado or adding protein to your smoothie can make a noticeable difference in energy, mood and cycle regularity.
Prioritise protein and healthy fats
Your body needs raw materials to produce hormones. Protein provides essential amino acids for repair and resilience, while healthy fats from egg yolks, oily fish, avocado, activated nuts and olive oil supply the cholesterol and fatty acids needed for hormone synthesis.
If your energy is low or PMS feels overwhelming, try adding more protein and healthy fats to your day instead of cutting calories. Nourishment is far more effective than restriction.
Support your liver and gut
Your liver and gut work together to clear excess hormones and metabolic waste. When they are sluggish, old oestrogen can recirculate, which can lead to bloating, mood swings and painful cycles.
Support these pathways by eating cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale and cauliflower, staying hydrated and keeping your fibre intake high. Fermented foods or a quality probiotic can also help rebalance the gut microbiome and improve hormone clearance.
Manage stress like it is a nutrient
Chronic stress is one of the biggest disruptors of hormonal health. High cortisol levels divert resources away from sex hormone production and can affect everything from libido to fertility.
You do not need to eliminate stress; you simply need to manage it intentionally. Build small, non-negotiable recovery habits into your week, such as a daily
walk, journalling, yoga, meditation or five minutes of deep breathing before bed. Consistency matters more than duration.
Supplement strategically
Food should always come first, but targeted supplements can offer extra support. Magnesium, zinc, B vitamins and omega 3s are some of the most beneficial for hormonal balance and nervous system regulation. Speak to a qualified practitioner if you are unsure where to begin.
Your hormones are not broken; they are responsive. When you nourish yourself well, sleep deeply and manage stress with intention, your body has everything it needs to recalibrate. Make 2026 the year you listen to your body’s signals, support them with care and step into genuine hormonal harmony.

Skin restored
The little-known treatment helping people feel whole again
Skin tells a story; a story of sunlight, laughter and sometimes, survival. What many people don’t expect, though, is how deeply medical procedures can change the way their skin looks and feels.
Every year, thousands of Australians undergo treatments that save lives or restore health: mole removals, skin cancer excisions, surgical repairs, grafts and more. The priority is always recovery. But long after the medical journey is over, visible reminders often stay behind – pale or dark scars, areas of missing pigment, grafts that don’t blend with surrounding skin.
For some, it’s a quiet reminder of illness, surgery or trauma. For others, it affects how confidently they see themselves. Many are told that nothing more can be done, that the scar will “settle” with time. But for a growing number of people, that’s not the end of the story.
There is a next step, and it’s called medical tattooing
Medical tattooing is a specialised form of skin restoration that helps rebalance colour and camouflage areas affected by scarring
or pigment loss. Unlike cosmetic tattooing, which focuses on enhancing brows or lips, medical tattooing is about restoration: helping the treated area look more like the surrounding skin.
Using advanced pigments and precise micro-techniques, practitioners can reintroduce false melanin into lighter scars, soften darker marks, and create a more natural, blended appearance.
“It’s about restoring normalcy,” says Kat McCann, a three-time Australian Cosmetic Tattooist of the Year. “When someone looks in the mirror and sees their skin, not their scar, it changes how they feel in their own body.”
The technique can support many types of scarring, including surgical scars, accidentrelated injuries, burns and grafts. It helps reduce contrast, even out tone and restore visual balance.
Is it right for you?
• Your scar or graft is fully healed, flat and stable in colour.
• You’ve received medical clearance following surgical or cancer-related treatment.
• You want to restore natural tone or reduce contrast in a visible area.
Why it matters
Medical tattooing isn’t about vanity, it’s about resolution. It’s often the quiet, final stage of healing that helps people reconnect with their confidence and sense of self.
Did you know?
• Australia has one of the highest rates of skin-cancer treatment in the world, resulting in thousands of surgical excisions every year.
• Many of these procedures leave pigment loss or scar contrast that remains visible, even after full healing.
• Medical tattooing provides a long-term, non-invasive way to blend these areas naturally back into the skin.

Why having a long and healthy life starts in your gut
They say a long and healthy life starts from within, and science agrees. In fact, around 70% of the immune system lives in your gut, making gut health one of the most powerful drivers of overall wellbeing. A healthy gut doesn’t just aid digestion; it plays a key role in immunity, metabolism, hormone regulation, and even how we age. Your gut communicates directly with your brain, influencing mood, cognition, and stress resilience. When your gut microbiome is diverse and balanced, it helps you absorb nutrients more effectively, fuels energy production, and builds resilience against disease. But when things go wrong, a state known as dysbiosis, it can contribute to obesity, diabetes, autoimmune conditions, cardiovascular disease, and even dementia.
WHAT IS BIOHACKING?
Biohacking is about understanding how your body works and making small, deliberate changes to help it work better. It’s the practice of experimenting with your lifestyle, diet and environment to improve energy, focus, sleep, mood and overall health. In simple terms, biohacking means using science, self-awareness and everyday habits to help your body and mind perform at their best.
WHY A LONG AND HEALTHY LIFE STARTS IN YOUR GUT
They say good health starts from within, and science agrees. Around 70 per cent of your immune system lives in your gut, making gut health one of the most important factors in long-term wellbeing. A healthy gut doesn’t just support digestion;
it affects your immunity, metabolism, hormones and even how you age. Your gut and brain are constantly communicating, which means gut health can influence your mood, focus and stress levels. When your gut microbiome – the community of bacteria living in your digestive system –is balanced and diverse, it helps your body absorb nutrients, produce energy and protect against disease. But when things get out of balance (a condition known as dysbiosis), it can contribute to obesity, diabetes, autoimmune conditions, heart disease and even dementia.
After nine years as a biohacker, I’ve learned that improving gut health isn’t complicated. The problem is that there’s a lot of misinformation out there, especially in the biohacking world, where people think you need expensive gadgets or supplements to succeed. You don’t. Through my oneon-one coaching at BiohackHer, I help people focus on what really works. Simple, science-backed habits that improve your health from the inside out.
MY TOP SIMPLE BIOHACKS FOR YOUR GUT
Move your body regularly. Exercise improves the diversity of healthy gut bacteria and reduces inflammation. Get restorative sleep. Aim for seven to eight hours each night. Your gut microbes follow a natural rhythm, so when your sleep is disrupted, they are too. Eat for your gut. Include at least 25g of fibre daily, plus prebiotics like garlic, onions and bananas; probiotics from fermented foods such as kefir, miso and kimchi; and polyphenols from foods like berries, olive oil and green tea. Avoid processed foods and refined sugar as these feed bad bacteria and promote inflammation. Limit alcohol, as it irritates and inflames the gut lining. Reduce stress, as high cortisol levels upset gut balance and trigger inflammation.
PRO TIPS
To take your gut health a step further, start the day with a shot of organic apple cider vinegar diluted in water to activate your digestive system. You can also try adding glutamine, an amino acid that supports gut lining health, reduces inflammation and strengthens your immune system.
Biohacking doesn’t need to be extreme or expensive. It’s simply about tuning into your body and making small, consistent changes that reduce inflammation and support your gut. When your gut is healthy, everything else starts to fall into place. To learn more, visit www.biohack-her.com.

The Energy Epidemic
Feeling tired, flat or foggy? It might not be “just
A growing number of health experts are warning of a silent “energy epidemic” affecting Australians nationwide, and the causes may be hiding in your blood. Iron and vitamin D deficiencies are quietly draining the vitality of millions, with women among the most at risk.
As we shake off winter and settle into warmer days, many people are discovering that their low energy, mood swings and constant fatigue aren’t simply part of a busy lifestyle. In many cases, they’re signs of low iron or low vitamin D.
THE SUNSHINE VITAMIN DIP
Vitamin D is essential for strong bones, a resilient immune system and healthy energy levels. But because it’s made through sunlight exposure, winter naturally sends levels dipping, and for many Australians, they stay low well into summer. Sunscreen use, indoor work and lifestyle habits all contribute.
More than one in five Australian adults are now vitamin D deficient, and nearly two million Australians are low in iron. Women and teenage girls are particularly vulnerable, with up to 40% of girls aged 14–18 not meeting their daily iron needs.
Symptoms like tiredness, brain fog, breathlessness, low mood and frequent illness can all signal a deficiency. But because these signs are so easy to blame on stress or exhaustion, the underlying cause often goes unnoticed until daily life is heavily affected.
That’s where at-home testing comes in handy. You can test your levels at home with a Ferritin Rapid Test and Vitamin D Rapid Test – designed for convenient use in the privacy of the home, available from local pharmacies, without needing a GP appointment.
A MUM’S WAKE-UP CALL
For Stephanie Saunders, a nurse and mum-of-six, the signs blended into the noise of everyday life.
life”, and you’re not alone.
“As a nurse and a mum, I’m used to being tired,” she says. “But after months of feeling constantly run down and foggy, I realised something wasn’t right. Testing my iron and vitamin D levels showed both were low, and once I addressed it, the difference in my energy and mood was incredible.”
Now, Stephanie encourages other busy parents to check their levels, even if they think tiredness is “normal”. “These simple self-tests make it so much easier to stay on top of your health without adding more to your already full schedule,” she says.
TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR ENERGY
With GP access becoming harder and outof-pocket costs rising, at-home testing has become a convenient and proactive way to monitor your health. Identifying deficiencies early means fewer surprises, and more energy to enjoy the months ahead.
So, if you’ve been feeling unusually tired, flat or foggy, it may be time to look beyond stress, sleep and lifestyle. A simple nutrient check could be the missing piece, and your body might be asking for a little extra support.
STOP HATING DATING
Why dating can feel like a performance (and how to start enjoying dating again)
By Sarah van Eck
Somewhere between “just be yourself” and “don’t be too much,” dating turned into an unpaid acting gig. I know the role well. I’ve played it. I’ve been the version of me that seemed the most dateable, attractive and polite, all while pretending not to care. I thought if I could get it right, then someone would finally choose me. I was exhausted. When I struggled to find a partner who understood me, I thought there was something wrong with me, but I was just disconnected from who I really was.
WHY WE START PERFORMING
This isn’t just a matter of fitting in or being enough. When our need for belonging feels uncertain, we start shapeshifting. From childhood, we learn that being liked keeps us safe. By age two, we’re already forming a sense of self. When that self is met with criticism or inconsistency, we adjust to keep the connection alive. We start measuring our worth by how comfortable other people feel around us. And the more we do that, the further we drift from ourselves. Science backs this up: when we spend too much time focused on how others see us, it increases anxiety and dulls our ability to connect with our own emotions. Understandably, dating starts to feel like a performance we have to get right. We’re craving a sense of safety and belonging.
HOW TO START ENJOYING DATING AGAIN
“Just be yourself” is common dating advice. But many of us don’t think it’s possible to be loved without trying. Truly being yourself begins with respecting and liking who you are. When you honour what you need and let yourself take up space, your energy changes. Let the friends who love your quirks be proof that you’re lovable as that unpolished version. Reconnect with what lights you up – the music you love, the friends who make you laugh uncontrollably, the activity you get lost in. Dating starts to feel lighter when you stop auditioning. Because connection isn’t found in perfection; it’s found in honesty, laughter and the small moments where you let someone see the real you.

As the founders of Dune Outdoor Luxuries and the exclusive Australian distributor of iconic U.S. brand Brown Jordan, Mary has become synonymous with timeless design, premium craftsmanship, and serene alfresco living. We sat down with her to talk inspiration, luxury materials, and the secrets to creating outdoor spaces that truly feel like home.
The Inspiration Behind the Craft
What inspired your passion for luxurious outdoor spaces?
MARY: I’ve always wanted to create a sanctuary at home—a place for family and friends to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Travelling overseas exposed me to brands that were operating at a higher level. Brown Jordan stood out for its heritage, attention to detail, and marine-grade materials. Becoming their exclusive Australian distributor was a natural step. Their designs from the 1940s are still relevant today – timeless and enduring.
The Art of Effortless Elegance
What’s your secret to transforming an ordinary outdoor area into a sanctuary?
MARY: Layering and using only the best materials. Sunbrella solution-dyed acrylics are non-negotiable for us—they last and elevate every space. I also keep accessories minimal; the furniture should always be the hero. When the design is strong, the space feels calm, inviting, and effortlessly elegant.
Alfresco Trends—and What Lasts
What trends are shaping luxury outdoor spaces?
MARY: I focus on understanding a client’s lifestyle. Onsite consultations help create flow from indoors to outdoors, making the space feel cohesive. I don’t chase trends— create long-term spaces. For apartment living, I recommend deep seating instead of dining, encouraging more use and comfort. Timeless design always wins.
The Dream Outdoor Haven
If you could design your ultimate outdoor space, what would it include?
MARY: A pool and covered seating area layered with an outdoor rug and sheer Sunbrella curtains. An outdoor kitchen with a built-in Weber BBQ, oversized pots filled with lush plants, and furniture that connects seamlessly to the interior. Outdoor rooms should feel just as beautiful and inviting as the indoors.
“ LET THE FURNITURE BE THE HERO ”
A Standout Project
Is there a project that holds a special place in your heart?
MARY: One home in Sanctuary Cove stands out. The developer asked me to stage the outdoor areas. I encouraged them to invest in quality furniture, and it transformed the property. Interiors were staged professionally, and I styled the outdoors with Brown Jordan furniture, cushions, and plants. The result? Top-dollar sale – and the buyers purchased all the furniture. It was the perfect example of how powerful outdoor design can be.

A Feng Shui Christmas:
The dos and don’ts for a joyful, balanced festive season
By Suzanne Butler
As the year draws to a close and Christmas lights begin to twinkle, our homes become the heart of celebration. Yet beneath the tinsel and tree lies something deeper – the energy that shapes how we feel, connect and experience the season. Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of harmonising energy, offers timeless wisdom to help you create a space that feels calm, abundant and full of joy.
Here’s how to bring balance to your festive season with a few simple dos and don’ts.
DO: Decorate with intention
Before pulling out the decorations, clear clutter and release what’s no longer serving you. Stagnant energy lingers around piles of “stuff”, creating tension and fatigue. Choose décor that genuinely lifts your mood. A mindful approach keeps your space light and full of festive flow.
DON’T: Overcrowd your space
Too many decorations can block energy and heighten stress. Aim for open movement in your living and dining areas – spaces where emotions (and sometimes opinions) tend to rise. When energy flows smoothly, so do conversations, making it easier to prevent awkward moments or family drama over dinner.
DO: Use red and gold wisely
Red and gold aren’t just festive – they’re powerful Feng Shui colours. Red symbolises Fire energy – joy, warmth, passion – while gold represents the Metal element, bringing focus and success. Use them in balance: too much red can spark tempers (especially from chatty uncles after their second drink), while gold brings calm refinement. Think balance, not blaze.
DON’T: Block the front door
Your front door is the “mouth of Chi”, the main entry for energy – and guests. Keep it open, bright and clutter-free. A wreath made from natural greenery invites harmony, while gentle lighting encourages a peaceful welcome. This simple act also prevents family tension from “getting stuck” at the door – the energetic equivalent of stopping arguments before they start.
DO: Position your tree with purpose
Your Christmas tree symbolises growth and vitality. Placing it in the east boosts family harmony, the southeast attracts wealth and the south enhances reputation and joy. Avoid the northwest if you can, as it may trigger stubborn or dominant energy (looking at you, Uncle Kevin). A balanced tree equals a balanced table conversation.
DON’T: Use sharp or harsh decorations
Spiky ornaments, pointy branches or glittering stars aimed like darts can create “cutting Chi”, leading to irritability or tension. Choose rounded shapes, soft lighting and smooth textures to maintain a gentle, welcoming atmosphere – the antidote to festive feuds.
DO: Bring nature indoors
Balance the high-energy buzz of Christmas with grounding, natural touches. Fresh pine, eucalyptus or even a small potted plant connects your home to the Wood element, encouraging growth and calm. A bowl of fruit or flowers on the table can help keep emotions sweet rather than sour.
DON’T: Forget gratitude and intention
The strongest Feng Shui tip of all? Set your intention. As you decorate, reflect on what you’re grateful for and what you’d like to call in for the new year. Write those wishes and tuck them beneath the tree –a symbolic gesture of peace, abundance and family unity.
This Christmas, let Feng Shui guide you beyond the decorations and into the energy that truly matters – harmony, connection and calm. Because when your home is balanced, even Uncle Kevin can’t shake your festive spirit.
Summer Interior Design Trends 2025
Summer is heating up, and so are our interiors. This season is all about creating spaces that feel effortless, inviting and full of personality. Whether you’re refreshing one room or giving your whole home a mini makeover, 2025’s trends bring together warmth, texture and soft, organic shapes. Think natural materials, sun-washed colours and lighting that feels as gentle as a summer evening. Here’s what’s making waves this season.
Californian bungalow
While the classic Hamptons palette will always have a place, this summer we’re seeing a shift toward the more relaxed charm of the Californian bungalow. It’s coastal, yes, but with extra warmth and playfulness. Blue and white are no longer the only go-to tones. Instead, think sandy neutrals layered with pops of mustard, peach and coral. Bouclé, linen and rattan add soft texture, while indoor greenery and woven accessories help ground the look. The result is a beach-inspired sanctuary that feels bright, lived-in and effortlessly summery, ideal for long lunches or slow weekend afternoons.
Curvaceous design
Curves are back in a big way, and this time, they’re sticking around. Rounded sofas, soft silhouettes and sculptural edges bring a modern interpretation of the 70s into contemporary spaces. From arched doorways and oval mirrors to curved cabinetry handles, these shapes create flow and calm throughout the home. The trick is to keep balance: pair curvy pieces with simple, minimal backdrops so the space feels soothing rather than crowded. These soft lines make rooms feel more welcoming while still looking polished and current.
Mediterranean stoneware
Nothing captures summer quite like the Mediterranean: warm terracotta, rustic stone and sun-kissed textures. Bring those holiday vibes into your home with natural materials like travertine, terrazzo and unfinished pottery. A handcrafted terracotta pot or a heavy stone bowl can add instant earthy charm. For a bolder statement, consider a travertine coffee table or a textured plaster wall. These pieces celebrate natural imperfection, reminding us that beauty often lies in the raw, the grounded and the unrefined.
Low lighting
And finally, the biggest shift: ditching the “big light.” Overhead lighting can feel harsh, especially on warm summer nights. Instead, embrace low, warm illumination that mimics the soft glow of sunset. Scatter candles on the dining table, add petite lamps to shelves or bedside tables, or try dimmable wall sconces. Smart bulbs let you adjust colour and intensity depending on your mood, golden tones for entertaining, soft amber for winding down. This layered approach transforms your home into a calm, cosy retreat.
Summer 2025 interiors are all about balance, blending texture, colour and shape to create spaces that feel as bright, breezy and beautifully relaxed as the season itself.
Create an outdoor area you’ll use all year round
By Kylie Harding
No matter where you live in Australia, we all love the idea of entertaining outside. Whether you have a balcony, courtyard or a full backyard, the key to creating a space you’ll enjoy year-round is thoughtful planning and a few smart design choices.
Decide how you’d like to use the space
Do you have young children who want to ride their tricycles around? Do you love hosting family and friends, or are you a couple looking for a quiet place to unwind? Deciding how you’ll use your outdoor area will guide every decision—from flooring and furniture to whether you need a roof, heating or cooling, and what finishes and fittings will work best. This is also the time to plan for practicalities such as power points, lighting, and plumbing for water or gas.
Bring the inside out
Your outdoor area should feel like an extension of your home. Mirroring your interior style outside creates flow and
connection. If you have a soft, neutral palette indoors, stick with similar tones outdoors. If you love colour, let it continue outside too. Extending your flooring—such as tiles or timber—into the outdoor area creates a seamless transition. Glass doors that slide or fold open will also help blur the boundaries between indoors and out, creating a beautiful sense of space.
Give me shelter
Having some form of roof or cover will ensure you can use your outdoor space all year round—rain, hail or shine. Options range from simple sail shades to adjustable louvred roofs, catering to every style and budget. Side blinds can also help protect from rain or harsh sun, creating a true outdoor room that’s comfortable in any season.
Accessorise
Pot plants, cushions and candles add warmth and character. Choose heavy pots that won’t topple in the wind and opt for outdoor-friendly fabrics to prevent mould or fading. Practical additions like heaters, ceiling fans, speakers, TVs or even pizza
ovens can turn your outdoor area into a space you’ll actually use.
Creating an outdoor space you can enjoy year-round is about more than furniture or plants—it’s about designing a setting that invites you to slow down, connect and enjoy every season. With a few thoughtful touches, your outdoor area can become the most loved “room” in your home.
Happy styling, Kylie @styledtosell
Navigating the Change: How Menopause Impacts Women Over 40
For many women, turning 40 is a milestone, often filled with confidence, self-assurance, and a deeper sense of self. But it’s also the age when whispers of “the change” start becoming reality. Menopause, the natural end of a woman’s reproductive years, typically occurs between 45 and 55, but symptoms can begin years earlier during a phase known as perimenopause. While menopause is a biological certainty, its impact on health, wellness, fitness, and overall quality of life can be significant—and varies widely from woman to woman, but rest assured—We all feel it!
HORMONES IN TRANSITION
The most typical quality of menopause is the gradual decline in oestrogen and progesterone, the two main ‘female’ hormones that regulate not just the menstrual cycle but a range of other functions. This hormonal shift can lead to hot flashes, night sweats, and sleep disturbances among others—all of which affect daily life and energy levels. But the changes run deeper.
HEALTH & WELLNESS CONCERNS
Menopause brings increased risks for certain health issues. Bone density begins to decline, raising the risk of Osteoporosis, Cholesterol levels may rise, potentially impacting heart health and weight gain, especially around the abdomen, is common—even for women who
haven’t changed their eating or exercise habits. These shifts can feel frustrating, but awareness is empowering. Regular screenings, a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and support from Trainers and Medical Professionals can help manage these changes proactively.
FITNESS: Adapting for Strength and Wellbeing
Many women over 40 notice a decline in muscle mass and metabolism. Workouts that once maintained their weight and strength may no longer be as effective due to the decline in hormones. This is the time to reassess your fitness routine. Strength training becomes essential—not just to maintain muscle but to support bone health. low-impact cardio and mobility-based workouts can also help manage weight, improve flexibility, and reduce stress.
MOOD MATTERS
By Bree Graham
Mood swings, anxiety, and even depression can surface or intensify during menopause, sometimes catching women off guard. This emotional turbulence is often tied to fluctuating hormone levels, compounded by sleep disruptions and the life changes common at this age—career shifts, aging parents, or children leaving home etc. Talking openly about Mental Health, seeking support from professionals, and building a network of understanding friends can make a significant difference.
REDEFINING QUALITY OF LIFE
Despite the challenges, menopause can also be a liberating time. Many women describe it as a turning point—a time to focus on themselves, their goals, and their well-being. With the right information, support, and self-care, menopause can be reframed not as an ending, but as a powerful new beginning. At Vision Personal Training, we see Menopause as exactly that and we are here to help you navigate the challenges and feel empowered throughout the journey! After all, ageing is inevitable—but how you navigate it is entirely your own choice.

THE LINK BETWEEN YOUR Z’S AND YOUR HEART:
Why sleep may be the secret to women’s longevity
By Dr Ross Walker, Integrative Cardiologist MBBS (Hons), FRACP, FCSANZ
As women enter their 40s and beyond, many start to notice changes in sleep, energy and overall wellbeing. While these shifts are often attributed to hormones or stress, new research shows that sleep itself may be one of the most powerful yet underestimated factors in supporting long-term heart health.
A landmark review published in Menopause: The Journal of the Menopause Society followed nearly 3,000 women over two decades. The findings were eye-opening: only one in five women in midlife were found to have “optimal” heart health, with poor sleep emerging as a critical driver of increased cardiovascular risk.
Why sleep matters more than we think
We’ve long known that blood pressure, cholesterol and diet are central to heart health. But this new research confirms that quality sleep—ideally seven to nine hours per night—belongs on the same priority list. During midlife, as women transition through menopause, hormonal shifts can disturb sleep and place extra strain on the cardiovascular system.
“Sleep isn’t a luxury, it’s medicine for the heart,” explains Australia’s leading integrative cardiologist, Dr Ross Walker. “For women in midlife, this is the time when heart health risks begin to rise, and sleep becomes one of the most powerful tools for prevention.”
The
cellular connection:
Powering your heart from within
Beyond hormones, a woman’s heart health is also deeply tied to what’s happening at the cellular level. The heart is the body’s most energy-demanding organ, relying on mitochondria—the tiny powerhouses in every cell—to keep it beating around the clock.
Mitochondrial function depends on Ubiquinol, a naturally occurring antioxidant that fuels energy production and helps protect cells from oxidative stress. However, from the age of 20, our natural levels of Ubiquinol begin to decline, a process accelerated by menopause and lifestyle factors such as stress or poor sleep.
“Without healthy mitochondria, our hearts simply can’t function at their best,” says Dr Walker. “That’s why supporting mitochondrial health is not just an add-on— it’s central to preventative cardiovascular care for women.”
Small shifts, big gains
The good news? Women can take practical steps today to protect their heart health:
• Prioritise sleep: Build a calming night routine, avoid screens before bed, and aim for a consistent sleep schedule.
• Eat naturally: Choose whole, antioxidant-rich foods to support energy and reduce oxidative stress.
• Move daily: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days.
• Support your mitochondria: Consult your healthcare professional to determine if nutritional support may be needed to maintain energy and resilience as you age.
For women over 40, heart health is not just about avoiding illness—it’s about thriving. By prioritising sleep, supporting mitochondrial health and embracing simple daily habits, women can take decisive steps towards vitality, independence and longevity.
Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist, consult your healthcare professional.

• 800 g cauliflower, up to 1 kg will work, separated into chunky florets, with leaves removed and stem removed
• 4 tbsp butter, 60 g
• 5 tbsp cornflour, 60 g
• 1 ½ cups milk, 375 ml
Method:
1. Preheat your oven to 200˚C / 400°F.
2. Pop the bacon or shredded ham in a small frying pan over medium heat and sauté until cooked through and crispy. Note: It should release its own oil while cooking, but you can add a dash of oil if needed to give it more colour.
3. Mix the tomato sauce, barbecue sauce and Worcestershire sauce in a small bowl.
4. Arrange the oysters in their half shells onto an oyster wheel tray (or a baking tray lined with a generous layer of rock salt) to hold them up. Top with cooked bacon and drizzle with sauce.
5. Bake for 5-10 minutes until the sauce starts to caramelise and the oysters are cooked to your liking.
• 1 ½ cups cheddar cheese, 165 g, grated
• ½ tsp nutmeg Optional
• salt and pepper to taste
Method:
1. Place cauliflower florets in a large saucepan and cover with around 1.5 L / 3 pints of water. Bring to the boil and boil for 15-20 mins or until cauliflower has softened (test with a fork). Drain and transfer to a baking dish.
For the cheese sauce:
1. Melt the butter in the same saucepan you used to cook the cauliflower, on medium – high. Add cornstarch / cornflour and stir well with a whisk for about 1 minute to make sure it’s cooked through. This will stop it tasting like flour in the final sauce.
Tip: Aim for a lemon curd consistency here – if it’s too thin, add another ½ tbsp cornstarch / cornflour and mix well.
2. Turn off the heat to pour in milk (this will stop the sauce becoming lumpy). Whisk through quickly, then pop back onto low heat and keep whisking until thickened, around 1 minute.
Tip: If the sauce becomes too thick at this stage, add a little more milk to loosen.
3. Add 1 cup of cheddar cheese and stir to melt it through the sauce.
Tip: You can increase heat slightly to help the cheese melt if needed.
4. Season with nutmeg, and optional salt and pepper to taste. Mix well.
Tip: If the sauce is too thick to pour, add a little more milk once again to loosen.
To bake:
1. Pre-heat oven to 180°C / 360°F.
2. Pour the cheese sauce over the cauliflower florets, making sure each piece is well coated. Top generously with remaining 1/2 cup cheddar cheese. Bake for around 20 minutes or until the cheesy top is bubbly and golden brown.

• 2 tbsp olive oil, 30 ml
• 1/3 cup dukkah, 45 g
For the Roast Vegetables
• 4 potatoes, peeled and quartered
• 2 onions, peeled and quartered
• 4 carrots, peeled and quartered
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• Salt and pepper to taste
Method:
1. Pre-heat your oven to 200˚C (fan forced).
2. Pop your boneless roast lamb into a large roasting pan upside down and liberally baste olive oil onto the top and sides.
3. Sprinkle ¾ of the dukkah over the lamb top and sides until you have a nice coating then place into the oven.
4. Roast for 1 hour then carefully flip the lamb over so the top is now upright. Baste the top with remaining dukkah.
5. Add potatoes, onions and carrots into the roasting pan around the lamb, drizzle with olive oil (and / or baste with pan juices!) and season with optional salt and pepper.
6. Place your tray back in the oven and cook for another 30 minutes or until juices run clear when the meat is pierced with a fork. Flip your veggies over now and baste again with pan juices extra crispy deliciousness!
7. Remove lamb now for Medium or cook for a further 15 minutes with the veggies for Well Done.
8. Once you’ve removed your fragrant dukkah-crusted roast lamb out of the oven, cover with aluminium foil, and allow it to rest for 10 mins or so til it’s juicy and tender before carving.
9. Serve with your roasted veggies and your favourite gravy. Also goes well with steamed beans, cauliflower cheese or potato bake.
Ingredients:
For the pavlova meringue base
• 6 egg whites (using extra large, 59 g eggs)
• 390 g caster sugar
• 1 tsp cornflour, heaped
• 1 tsp vinegar
• 1 tsp vanilla essence
• For the whipped cream
• 400 g thickened cream
• 75 g caster sugar

• 1 kiwi fruit sliced

• 1 tbsp icing sugar, to sprinkle
Easy Australian Pavlova Recipe
Method:
For the pavlova meringue
1. Pop your egg whites into the mixing bowl and attach the whisk to the stand mixer (or use a hand mixer). Start by whipping them on speed 2 then move through to speed 4 after a couple of minutes.
2. When the egg whites turn into bubbly soft peaks, up the speed to 6 and add the caster sugar and cornstarch, then increase to speed 8 for 10 – 12 minutes until you’ve got yourself a luxuriously smooth, glossy meringue mixture.
3. Now bring the speed down to 4 and pour in the vinegar and vanilla essence. You might need to scrape down the meringue from the sides of the bowl every now and again with a spatula to make sure it mixes through. Let it mix for 1 minute then switch off your mixer.
4. Preheat your oven to 150˚C / 300˚F (Fan Forced) and line your tray with baking paper.
5. Scoop out the glossy meringue mixture onto a lined baking tray and form a flat circle shape. Smooth it out or get creative with decorative patterns, twists or twirls.
6. Pop in the oven, lowest rack, and bake for an hour to an hour and a half until the meringue sets into a crunchy, crispy outside with a soft golden glow. When the outside is firm and dry, and cracks start to appear on the top, you’re ready to go. Switch off the oven and allow the pavlova to cool in the oven completely with the door slightly open.
For the whipped cream
1. While the pavlova is cooling, pour your cream into your cleaned mixing bowl and pop in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. When your pavlova is cool, place the bowl back on the stand mixer (or grab your hand mixer) and whip the cream on Speed 6 – 8. Add in the caster sugar and vanilla essence and continue to whip until the cream thickens and holds a nice shape.
To assemble
1. Top your cooled pavlova with whipped cream and sliced fruit such as strawberries, kiwi fruit, banana and passionfruit, and sprinkle with icing sugar.

Summer pool care made simple
By Jason Michael, Pool Care Specialist
Why summer demands your pool's full attention
Summer in Australia is pool season at its peak. With temperatures climbing above 35°C, your pool faces its greatest challenges of the year. Higher heat accelerates chemical breakdown, increased swimmer load introduces more contaminants, and algae can spiral out of control in just 24 hours. The good news?
Smart maintenance habits – and the right technology – make staying on top of it easier than ever.
Tackle floors, walls, and the waterline
Summer storms and daily swimming mean debris accumulates fast. The Aiper Scuba X1 handles this with its 6,600 GPH dual-jet suction system, cleaning floors, walls, and waterlines automatically. Its WaveLine 2.0 technology delivers horizontal waterline scrubbing – removing sunscreen residue, oils, and algae that manual brushing misses. With WavePath 3.0 navigation and 180 minutes of cordless runtime, it delivers a thorough clean while you enjoy summer.
Keep debris off the surface
Floating debris doesn't just look unsightly – it sinks and feeds algae growth. In Australian backyards surrounded by eucalyptus and gum trees, surface debris is a constant battle. The Aiper Surfer S2 solar-powered skimmer provides 24/7 automated surface cleaning. Its SolarSeeker technology moves to sunny spots when battery runs low, while 35-hour battery life handles overcast days. The DebrisGuard system prevents collected debris escaping, and the built-in chlorine dispenser maintains sanitiser levels as it skims.
Monitor water chemistry more frequently
Summer heat consumes chlorine faster than expected. UV radiation breaks down sanitiser while increased swimmer load introduces oils and sunscreen. Test the water at least twice weekly during peak summer.
• pH: 7.2–7.6 for comfortable swimming
• Free chlorine: 2–4 ppm (higher than cooler months)
• Stabiliser: 30–50 ppm to protect chlorine from UV
• Total alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
Automated cleaning with Aiper's Scuba and Surfer range improves circulation and reduces the organic load your chemicals work against.
Run your equipment smarter
Increase pump run times to 8–12 hours daily for proper circulation. Check filter
pressure weekly – a clean filter improves circulation by up to 30%. Pairing your system with the Aiper Scuba X1 reduces strain on your main filter -its dual-stage MicroMesh filtration captures everything from leaves to ultra-fine particles before they reach your primary system.
Shock after heavy use
After parties or storms, shock treatments reset your chemistry. Always shock in the evening. While chemicals work, the Aiper Surfer S2 keeps fresh debris out -its 150-micron filtration captures pollen, dust, and fine particles that storms blow in.
Establish a summer routine
Consistency prevents small issues becoming expensive repairs.
• Every few days: Run Aiper Scuba X1 for full clean
• As needed: Shock after heavy use
Both Aiper devices connect to the Aiper app for scheduling, monitoring, and control from anywhere. Set it and forget it -your robots won't skip a session.
Enjoy the season
Australian summers are made for poolside living. With smart maintenance habits and Aiper technology handling the hard work, your pool stays sparkling all season – so you can spend time where you belong: in the water.
