How this Beautifully Adorned Mollusk Rules the Caribbean

The Queen of the Caribbean Sea: A Story of Beauty, History and Survival Dive along a shallow seagrass bed beneath a Caribbean sun and you might spot one of the region’s most iconic inhabitants: the Queen Conch (Aliger gigas). With its protruding “foot” propelling it across seabed and its shell’s rosy interior glinting under water, this marine snail is more than a pretty shell; it is a living thread in Caribbean ecology, culture and economy.

The Majesty of the Conch The queen conch is a large marine gastropod, one of the biggest in the tropical Atlantic, growing up to a foot long with a thick, flared shell in shades of pink, orange or cream. Its eyes, perched on stalks above the body, help it graze peacefully on algae in seagrass meadows, where it roams slowly but purposefully. This creature’s beautiful shell is more than ornamentation: historically, indigenous peoples used conch shells as ceremonial horns, tools and ornaments long before European contact, signaling the deep connection humans have had with them for thousands of years.

Ecological and Economic Importance Ecologically, conch are keystone grazers in shallow seagrass beds, clearing algae and helping maintain balanced underwater gardens that shelter fish, turtles and other marine life. Their feeding helps seagrass flourish, and as adults they provide habitat for smaller creatures even after they die; including commensal animals like slipper snails and small fish that make their shells home. Economically, queen conch have long been a foundation of Caribbean fisheries. Traditional conch dishes: cracked conch, fritters, chowder, and sautéed lambi are staples in local cuisine, while the shells historically supported artisanal crafts and trade. In many island communities, conch has been second only to lobster as a protein source and once ranked among the most valuable fisheries in the Caribbean.

Yet this success story has a fragile side: overfishing and habitat loss have driven conch populations down across much of the region. When adults are removed before breeding or juveniles are harvested prematurely, populations struggle to rebound. Combined with threats from coastal development and climate change, this has produced worrying declines in historically abundant stocks.

A Legacy of Harvest and Habitat Queen conch have been harvested for centuries. In places like Anegada, the northernmost island of the British Virgin Islands, conch are so woven into island life that entire landscapes speak to that legacy.

Off Anegada’s east coast lie colossal mounds of discarded conch shells, towering stacks created over hundreds of years by generations of fishers who removed the meat but tossed the smooth empty shells aside. These “middens” rise like eerie dunes emerging from turquoise waters: a testament to human history and traditional fishing. 29

Some projects even involve aquaculture and hatchery programs, where juveniles are grown and released into the wild to help enhance natural stocks while offering economic opportunities for coastal communities.

Unlike heavily depleted conch populations elsewhere in the Caribbean, Anegada’s conch still thrive, largely because local fishers historically took care to harvest responsibly, keeping live populations stable enough to support village tables and island restaurants.

In Anegada, generations of fishers have taken only what they need, leaving behind not just shells, but a blueprint for sustainability.”

Protecting the Future Around the Caribbean, conservationists and fishers are working together on management and restoration. Measures like size and seasonal limits, marine protected areas and sustainable harvest guidelines help give conch the time they need to reproduce and mature. Science and tradition now align in community-based initiatives that strengthen both marine ecosystems and fishery livelihoods.

Why We Can’t Collect Empty Shells It might seem harmless to pick up that pretty pink conch shell washed ashore but removing shells from the water can harm the ecosystem in several ways: You may unknowingly kill a living conch. Many conchs are still alive deep in shallow water; taking their shells before they’ve naturally emptied can mean taking life itself. Empty shells are valuable habitat. After conch die, their shells become homes, hiding spots and protective shelters for juvenile fish, crabs and other critters. Removing them reduces shelter in fragile seagrass ecosystems. Shells contribute to reef and sand formation. Over time, discarded shells help build the sandy bottoms and reefs many marine species depend on. A Legacy Worth Leaving The queen conch is more than a marine snail with a stunning shell. It is a symbol of Caribbean identity; a delicacy, a cultural icon and a vital ecological participant in seagrass ecosystems. The shells that once echoed human ceremony are now reminders of how entwined our fates are with these creatures. As fishers, scientists and island communities continue to steward the conch with care, we all share in protecting its future. And by simply leaving shells where they belong, we help ensure that the queen of the Caribbean Sea can continue her slow, graceful life for generations yet to come.

A Garden with a Story Long before Phantasea was on any travel map, it was the personal botanical dream of Patsy Breunlin...an architect, builder and avid gardener who bought her home in 1993. Impressed by the island’s raw beauty and motivated by a lifelong passion for plants, Patsy began cultivating a lush collection of tropical species on her hillside property. What started as a private garden eventually blossomed into something much bigger.

Creator “I enjoy tropical plants and orchids,” Patsy once said of her motivation. At the time, St. Thomas lacked a dedicated botanical garden, and Patsy saw an opportunity to create one. Drawing on her architectural skill and love of nature, she transformed an overgrown hillside into a thriving oasis and opened its gates to the public in 2015.

A Walk through Paradise Spread across approximately two acres, the garden unfolds like a tropical tapestry. From the moment you step into Phantasea, you’re surrounded by a living mosaic of lush beauty. Over 1,000 orchids bloom across the hillside, offering a dazzling array of color and form. Winding paths lead you through bromeliads, heliconias, air plants and palms, each labeled with thoughtful signage that adds a layer of education to the experience. Tucked among the greenery, quiet seating nooks and a Balinese-style gazebo invite moments of reflection. All around, nature hums; hummingbirds and bananaquits flit between blossoms, lizards bask in the sun and tortoises, peacocks, and even chickens wander freely. More than a garden, Phantasea is a vibrant ecosystem where plant life and island wildlife live in harmony.
