BIG LIST
ISLAND TOUR FROM WEST TO EAST
From wild West End cliffs to the vibrant East End shores; there’s no better way to experience St. Thomas than by exploring the whole 13mi island hugging the coastline, dipping North when the views demand it and slipping South for beach-side fun and lively shops and music. Let’s take the scenic route.
WEST END: RUGGED, RAW & UNFILTERED
We begin where the island feels untamed.
Mermaid’s Chair
On the far Western tip, a short but sandy hike brings you to one of St. Thomas’ most iconic natural wonders. When conditions align, the sandbar forms a breathtaking meeting point of the Atlantic and Caribbean seas. It’s remote, windswept and absolutely worth the effort.
BREWER’S BAY & BORDEAUX
Brewer’s Bay is a laid-back West end favorite known for calm waters, grazing sea turtles and a wide sandy shoreline perfect for cruise ship day escapes. Just up the hill, the Bordeaux Farmers Market takes place on the second and last Saturdays of each month, bringing together local farmers, fresh produce, baked goods, bush teas and artisan goods in a vibrant community setting.
Mermaid’s Chair at Sandy Bay

NORTHSIDE DETOUR: MOUNTAIN VIEWS & HIDDEN COVES
As we climb up and over toward the Northside, the scenery shifts dramatically.
Mountain Top
The highest point on St. Thomas offers sweeping views of Magens Bay and the British Virgin Islands beyond Banana daiquiri optional panoramic views mandatory. A definite stop for souvenirs!
Hull Bay
A true Northside gem. Known for its surf during North swells and relaxed local vibe year-round, Hull Bay feels like stepping into an old-school island postcard. Grab a bite at The Shack and also catch live music on select nights
Magens Bay & Neltjeberg
Arguably the island’s most famous beach and for good reason, Magens Bay is a mile-long crescent of calm, turquoise water makes this a must-stop Paddleboard, swim or simply float your worries away. Food, drinks, rentals and shops on site as well!
Neltjeberg Bay is one of St. Thomas’ most secluded beaches, tucked along the rugged Northside and reached by a steep, adventurous road that keeps the crowds away. With its wide stretch of golden sand, dramatic cliffs and powerful Atlantic surf, it feels wonderfully untouched a true hidden escape for those willing to make the journey.
Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden
Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden is a lush Northside retreat showcasing vibrant orchids, tropical palms, bromeliads and exotic island flora overlooking Magens Bay. Peaceful walking paths wind through terraced gardens bursting with color, offering visitors a quiet, scenic escape and one of the most beautiful elevated views on St. Thomas.

MID-ISLAND: HISTORY & HARBOR LIFE
Dropping back toward the center of the island, we arrive in Charlotte Amalie and its surrounding historic district.
Blackbeard’s Castle & 99 Steps Climb the brick steps and explore the historic towers that once guarded the harbor. The views alone are worth the cardio.
Originally constructed by the Danish in 1672, Fort Christian is the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands and once served as a military fort, government building, jail, and church. Today, its distinctive red walls anchor the Charlotte Amalie waterfront and stand as a powerful reminder of St Thomas’ layered colonial history under Danish rule before the islands were transferred to the United States in 1917
EXPLORE WATERFRONT & PALM PASSAGE
Just beyond the historic waterfront, Palm Passage offers one of Charlotte Amalie’s most charming strolls, with cobblestone paths, pastel facades and tropical greenery.
Known for its abundance of fine jewelry stores, art galleries and boutiques, it’s a favorite stop for browsing and finding something special. At the center, a beloved little open-air bar serves up refreshing cocktails...the perfect pause before continuing your wander.
PARADISE POINT SKYRIDE
For a quick lift with a big payoff, ride up for harbor views and sunset cocktails overlooking Charlotte Amalie. Also home to the best Bushwhacker on island! Operates on all ship days!
Anchoring the passage is iconic Gladys’ Café, known for authentic Virgin Islands cuisine, alongside several other standout restaurants that blend local flavor with downtown energy

SOUTH SIDE: NATURE & FAMILY FUN
As we continue East, the Southside offers tucked-away beaches and peaceful water. Bolongo Bay Laid-back, easy access and home to the beloved, Iggie’s Beach Bar! Great for snorkeling and sunset views with live music.
Mangrove Lagoon
For the adventurers and nature lovers...kayak tours weave through winding mangroves where juvenile fish, rays and birdlife thrive It’s a different side of the island, quiet and ecologically rich. For nature tours, explore here: St. Thomas Kayak & Nature Tours
Shhh...it’s a secret!
Secret Harbour
True to its name, this sheltered bay offers some of the island’s best shore snorkeling. Calm waters, reef life and a relaxed atmosphere make it a repeat favorite. Perfect for families and group trips, on site chair
and gear rentals as well as sunset views and great food and cocktails! This really is one of our best kept secrets on island!

EAST END: COLORFUL, LIVELY & FULL OF ENERGY
As we reach the East End, the water turns electric blue and the island buzz picks up Coki Beach
Snorkelers love this vibrant reef just offshore. Expect colorful fish, crystal-clear water and lively beach energy. Also, some of the best grilled lobster you’ll find on island...save this for a non-cruise ship day and the place is a true favorite!
Sapphire Beach
With views of St John and passing sailboats, Sapphire delivers both scenery and one of the best beach vibes you’ll find. Ideal for water sports and breezy beach days. Tons of on site excursions, restaurants and shops as well as live music every Sunday and home to St. Thomas’ best FULL MOON PARTY!
Lindquist Beach (Smith Bay Park)
Wide open sands, rolling hills in the background and postcard-perfect views. A favorite for photos and peaceful swims. Small entry fee guarantees less crowds on those busy days. Local favorite on Sundays!
THE BEAUTY OF THE JOURNEY
What makes St. Thomas special isn’t just any one beach or lookout...it’s the way the island unfolds. Wild West cliffs Northside overlooks. Historic harbor streets. Southside serenity. East End energy.
From West to East, every turn reveals a new shade of blue and new friends and adventures to explore!

NORTHSIDE STT
It’s Whale Season! We just spent a glorious hour or so with two juvenile Humpbacks last month and they can often be seen running Northside STT from Mahogany towards Sapphire and St. John. Keep your eyes peeled if you’re on this side of the island...last time, you could see them from Coki Beach!
BREWER’S BAY
If you want a quieter spot and guaranteed to swim with turtles and other favorites, head to Brewer’s Bay down by the airport. This beach is a haven when cruise ships are in and a peaceful experience with some of our top marine life. Food trucks are also located nearby if you work up an appetite.
These spots are perfect getaways for when there are larger crowds on island...peace, calm and beauty.
Introducing the Virgin Islands Dive & Snorkel Group
The idea was simple: create a space where ocean lovers divers, snorkelers, captains, guides, marine enthusiasts and curious beginners could come together
Not just to post pretty pictures. But to share real-time conditions.
To identify marine species.
To ask questions
To recommend trusted operators.
To promote respectful ocean practices.
In short, to build a community around the water that defines us
The Virgin Islands Dive & Snorkel Group is designed for both residents and visitors. Whether you’ve logged hundreds of dives or you’re slipping on a mask for the first time, the goal is the same: informed exploration
What You’ll Find Inside the Group
The Virgin Islands Dive & Snorkel Group is thoughtfully structured around five core pillars; each designed to make underwater exploration safer, smarter and more meaningful for everyone who enters the water.
Dive & Snorkel Spots and Conditions
Marine Species Identification
Trusted Dive & Snorkel Operators
Gear and Practical Advice
Respectful Ocean and Marine Life Practices
How Members Participate & Build Community
The group isn’t just a feed...it’s a shared responsibility.
Members are encouraged to:
• Post condition updates after their dives or snorkels
• Share marine life sightings and ask questions
• Offer constructive recommendations and honest reviews
• Support local operators with thoughtful feedback
• Model and promote respectful ocean behavior
We ask members to keep discussions informative, kind and community-driven. No gatekeeping. No shaming. Just shared knowledge and mutual respect.
Because when ocean lovers show up for each other, the entire marine environment benefits.
Dive & Snorkel Spots + Conditions
Island waters change daily. Wind direction, swell, surge, visibility, currents...all of it matters. Inside the group, members share:
• Real-time snorkel and dive reports
• Visibility updates
• Wind and swell impacts
• Site recommendations by experience level
• Shore-entry tips
Whether you're heading to Sapphire, Secret Harbour, The Indians, Maho or an offshore reef, local insight makes all the difference
Trusted Dive & Snorkel Operators
The Virgin Islands are home to incredible dive shops, charter captains and excursion companies. The group provides a place to:
• Highlight reputable operators
• Share reviews and experiences
• Recommend beginner-friendly charters
• Support locally owned businesses
Visitors benefit from transparency. Operators benefit from visibility. The community benefits from sharing.
J O I N A N D F O L L O W U S O N F A C E B O O K
Marine Species Identification
One of the most common questions after a snorkel:
“What was that fish?”
The group encourages members to share photos and videos for species ID...from parrotfish and angelfish to nurse sharks, octopus and the lesser known marine species you may encounter.
Learning what you’re looking at transforms a swim into an experience. When we identify what lives here, we value it differently.
“The more you know about the reef, the more you respect it.”
Gear & Practical Advice
Not all snorkels are created equal. Not all fins fit properly. Not all reef-safe sunscreens are actually reef safe.
Inside the group, members exchange helpful tips on:
• Mask fitting
• Fins for shore entry
• Rash guards vs. wetsuits
• Underwater cameras
• Safety float usage
• Motion sickness prevention
For beginners especially, these conversations reduce anxiety and increase confidence.
Respectful Ocean Practices
Perhaps the most important pillar of all.
The group promotes:
• No-touch reef policies
• Safe wildlife viewing distances
• Anchor awareness
• Reef-safe sunscreen use
• Proper fish feeding education (or avoidance)
• Leave-no-trace principles
Because enjoyment and protection must coexist. The Virgin Islands’ reefs are resilient... but they are not invincible
This is a space to share sightings, ask questions, post conditions, recommend favorite spots and operators and help one another explore responsibly The more we connect above the surface, the stronger our commitment becomes to protecting what thrives below it.
FRIEND OR FOE?
The Green Iguana & the Changing Ecology of the Virgin Islands
They sun themselves on rooftops.
They lounge in sea grape trees.
They dash across Centerline Road with prehistoric determination.
The Green Iguana has become an unmistakable presence in the U.S. Virgin Islands...photogenic, polarizing and officially classified as invasive. But their story is more complex than a label.
On islands shaped by migration...of people, goods, storms and species; the question isn’t simply how they got here.
It’s what their presence means now.
FROM RAINFORESTS TO ISLAND RIDGELINES
The Green Iguana (Iguana iguana) is native to Central and South America, including Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and parts of Southern Mexico They are also found naturally in some areas of the Southern Caribbean.
They are not indigenous to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Most experts believe their arrival here was unintentional transported through cargo shipments, released from the pet trade or displaced by hurricanes that carried them across water on vegetation mats. By the 1990s, sightings were increasing across St. Thomas and St. John. With a warm climate, abundant vegetation and few natural predators, the population grew quickly.
BUILT TO SURVIVE
Green iguanas are remarkably adaptable reptiles. They can grow up to six feet long including their tail, weigh over 10 pounds and live up to 15–20 years in the wild. They are strong swimmers, agile climbers and capable of dropping their tails to escape predators.
Primarily herbivores, they feed on leaves, flowers, fruits and ornamental landscaping...which explains why they are often seen in residential neighborhoods as much as in coastal brush.
Females lay between 20 and 70 eggs per nesting season, digging burrows in sandy soil to incubate their young. With high reproduction rates and favorable conditions, populations can expand rapidly. They are diurnal active in daylight which makes them highly visible to both residents and visitors.
BEHAVIOR, BREEDING & ISLAND LIFE
Green iguanas regulate their body temperature through sun exposure, which is why they are often seen basking on rooftops, docks and tree limbs. Males become more territorial during breeding season, displaying head bobs and dewlap extensions to assert dominance.
Despite their intimidating size, they are generally shy and will flee rather than confront humans. When cornered; however, they can whip their powerful tails or bite in self-defense. They are also surprisingly aquatic...often diving into water to escape threats and swimming with ease. Their adaptability is precisely what has allowed them to thrive.
WHY “INVASIVE” MATTERS
The word “invasive” carries weight.
In ecological terms, it refers to a non-native species that causes environmental, economic or ecological harm. In the Virgin Islands, concerns surrounding Green Iguanas include:
• Competition with native reptiles for food and habitat
• Damage to agriculture and landscaping
• Burrowing that can destabilize soil and infrastructure
• Rapid reproduction rates without natural predators
Unlike islands that evolved with native iguana species, the USVI ecosystem historically did not include large herbivorous reptiles. Their presence alters plant dynamics and food webs in subtle but meaningful ways. For fragile island environments, even small shifts can have outsized consequences.
ARE THERE BENEFITS?
The conversation isn’t entirely one-sided. Green iguanas contribute to seed dispersal through their plant-based diet. They provide prey for certain predators. They have become culturally recognizable and part of the visible island experience for many visitors.
Their presence also opens doors for environmental education; encouraging conversations about conservation, habitat protection and the responsibility that comes with global movement.
Still, the broader ecological concern remains: ecosystems that evolved in isolation are
THE BIGGER QUESTION
e Green Iguana forces us to confront a larger and truth
e Virgin Islands have always been shaped by ovement...of people, ships, storms and species. me arrivals become woven into the cultural bric. Others challenge ecological balance.
who gets to decide what belongs?
ence provides guidance. Policy provides anagement. But the conversation itself longs to the community.
r now, the Green Iguana remains both a iking symbol of tropical life and a reminder at in delicate island ecosystems, every introduction carries consequence.
