Researchers use Google Glass to boost ATM security security. Finextra German researchers have devised a novel if convoluted way of using Google Glass to make ATM cash withdrawals more secure. The team from Saarland University have tapped cryptographic software called Ubic for their project, installing it on Glass. The software identifies the user to the cash machine, creating a public key that is used to encrypt a one-way way PIN that is sealed with a digital signature. What results is a QR code on the ATM screen which only the customer's Google Glass can decrypt, showing the wearer a PIN needed to complete their transaction. Dominique Schröder, assistant professor, cryptographic algorithms, Saarland University, says: "We know that you can use it [Glass] to abuse data. But it can also be used to protect data."

Turkey's TEB rolls out NCR video teller tech

Turkish Economy Bank (TEB) has deployed NCR Interactive Teller video technology in the lobby of one of its Istanbul branches, enabling customers to talk to off-site employees. NCR says that its technology offers capabilities way beyond those of the traditional ATM, enabling customers to carry out 95% of normal teller transactions.

Huawei claims vast majority of China's video teller After three years of effort, Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei says it now controls 70 percent of the country's market for virtual teller machines. A report by China Business News quoted by Taiwan's Want China Times said that the company is just now "entering the stage of rapid expansion" and forecasts an increase of up to 800 percent in sales this year of the machines. VTMs allow bank customers to chat with a bank teller via video link to a central customer service facility. The machines facilitate many standard teller-assisted transactions without requiring the customer to visit a branch. Many banks are also using the machines to extend their service hours. The report said that VTMs have diversified to feature functions of community, household and mobile banking.

Just Face it, Your Face Could Be Your Next PIN by Vaughn Highfield

The system is designed to help cut operating costs by enabling tellers to simultaneously service multiple branches, while still connecting them with their customers face-to-face. Yalcin Orhon, director, financial services, NCR Turkey, says: "Through longer teller-service hours and deeper interactions, Interactive Teller can help financial institutions efficiently provide improved services and a better experience to their customers - without losing that human touch."

FNB, NCR take home award for ‘Best ATM and Kiosk Project in Africa’ First National Bank and NCR Corp. have won the award for “Best ATM and Kiosk Project in Africa” in Asian Banker’s Middle East and Africa Country 2014 Award ceremony. According to an NCR news release, FNB was the only bank in Africa to win an award in this category and was joined at the ceremony by Bytes Managed Solutions, which represents NCR exclusively in Southern Africa. FNB won the award for its successful implementation of the NCR SelfServ 4 slim line kiosk. NCR and Bytes worked with the FI to develop a solution that supports its inclusion banking strategy. The compact indoor financial kiosk allows FNB to offer an alternative channel to tellers and ATMs that facilitates the delivery of transactional banking services to the underbanked in South Africa. The platform also can assist the bank's cardholders with non-cash transactions such as account maintenance The NCR SelfServ 4 includes features that allow for barcode scanning, biometric authentication and full statement printing. The kiosks provide FNB customers with the ability to transact with the bank in remote locations outside of branch and banking hours. www.atmandcards.com

While the US, and many other nations around the world, struggle to find justification for EMV cards and the use of Chip and PIN devices, Europe is steaming ahead beyond the realms of the standard PIN and into facial recognition. We've already seen the early signs of thumb login's or payments coming in as a way to further protect consumers from fraud, but one tech start-up in Helsinki has developed the world's first facial recognition payment system. The authentication system effectively turns your face into a PIN through camera's mounted onto the front of an ATM or POS. It's toted as "the worlds fastest payments system," and can even recognise you as you approach the cashier, meaning payments could be completed in less than five seconds. Just how secure is this technology though? Well, it's supposedly protected by "military-grade algorithms" and it's pretty hard to steal someone else's face – although it certainly didn't stop this man from doing so. "The cameras aren't using photos, but use a mathematical model of the face, so it's very personal and unique," says Uniqul's chief business development officer Ruslan Pisarenko. "Even twins that look the same have

tiny differences. We've been asked a lot about plastic surgery, too, but it would never result in the same mathematical model. The system will be able to recognise if it's a person's real, live face and a mask." The first unit is set to be installed across Finland in a month's time, but if it proves successful then you'll never have to worry about remembering a pin again. The thing is, how many people would feel comfortable about their face being mathematically squished into a line of code for protection? Could it also bring about added risks for highprofile members of society or those who could be robbed at ATMs? It certainly raises a lot of issues at the same time as seemingly fixing many. It'll be interesting to see if it becomes the future of popular payment methods. While this facial recognition technology from Uniquil won't be present at Total Payments Europe, you can be sure to find the future of payment technologies and ideas there, along with industry experts you’re dying to meet and share ideas with.

According to the president of Nigeria, he said that this important milestone of the rollout of the National Identity Management System has been realized today and is impressed with the quality of the eID card and the work of the corporate partners that made it possible. He adds that the card will builds a window of social security benefit system and therefore encourages every Nigerian to get the card and directed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to work with the relevant agencies towards ensuring its use for speedy payment of salaries and pension. Nigerian Identity Management Commission (NIMC) will issue MasterCard-branded identity cards with electronic payments functionality

to 13 million Nigerians. This initiative is the largest rollout of a biometric-based verification card with an electronic payment solution in the country and the broadest financial inclusion program in Africa. The eID card forms a key component of the Nigerian Identity Management System, deployed by NIMC as part of its mandate to create, maintain and operate the country’s first central National Identity Database and provide proof of identity to Nigerians 16 years and older.

for Nigerian citizens to easily interact with the various government agencies and to transact electronically,” says Barr. Chris ‘E Onyemenam, Director General and CEO of NIMC. “There are many use cases for the card, including the potential to use it as an international travel document, which will have significant implications for border control in Nigeria and West Africa.”

With 13 applications, including MasterCard’s prepaid payment technology and Cryptovision’s biometric identification technology, the eID card will provide millions of Nigerians – the majority of whom have never had access to a banking product – with the security, convenience and reliability of electronic payments.

To receive the eID card, Nigerians aged 16 and above need to register at one of the hundreds of NIMC enrollment centers nationwide. The enrollment process involves the recording of an individual’s demographic data and biometric data (capture of 10 fingerprints, facial picture and Iris) to authenticate the cardholder and ensure that there are no duplicates on the system. Upon registration, NIMC issues each Nigerian with a unique National Identification Number (NIN), followed by the national eID card. Upon completion of the pilot program, NIMC plans to introduce more than 100 million cards to Nigeria’s 167 million citizens.

NIMC is working with several government agencies to integrate and harmonize all identity databases including the Driver’s License, Voter Registration, Health Insurance, Tax, SIM and the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) into a single, shared services platform. “The National eID program enables us to create an optimized common platform

Through the collaborative efforts of NIMC (the project lead), MasterCard (payments technology provider), Unified Payment Services Limited (payments processor), Cryptovision (Public Key Infrastructure and Trust Services Provider), and pilot issuing banks including Access Bank Plc, 13 million Nigerians will gain access to state-of-art financial services as part of the pilot program.

complementing the existing Oyster card Supporters of contactless payments say that the technology helps to reduce queues – a fact that can be easily seen at any London Underground station during rush hour. Customers using a contactless card do not have to stop and queue to buy a ticket every time they travel. TfL said it expects the move will save it up to £80m in the next five years by reducing payments to the firm providing Oyster cards, though it has no plans to phase the method out.

A donkey has become the first in the world to offer cashless rides along the beach after being fitted with a 'payment saddle' - a new way to pay for the traditional seaside pastime. Dillon has trotted into the 21st century allowing parents to touch a contactless credit or debit card, from any bank that offers the technology, to pay for a ride along the sands at Blackpool. Mark Ineson, owner of Real Donkeys, who has given donkey rides at the resort for nearly 20 years, has worked with Barclaycard to give Dillon a technology make-over. He said: 'Over the years I've had to turn hundreds of kids away because mums and dads don't have the cash on them to pay for a ride on Dillon and the beach is often the last place you want

to be carrying lots of change. 'So I approached Barclaycard to see whether they could help solve the problem. 'The saddle they've come up with means hundreds more people will be able to experience one of the Great British seaside traditions and have a donkey ride along the sands.

Good news to card owners, bad news for skimmers In order to checkmate skimming, Diebold Inc has introduced an anti-skimming card reader designed to thwart criminals' ability to capture automated teller machine (ATM) users' card data. The new ActivEdge™ card reader. prevent criminals from stealing card data from unsuspecting automated teller machine users. According to Diebold, ActivEdge is a technology that prevents skimming by requiring users to insert their card via the long edge instead of the traditional short edge. This 90degree change prevents the current crop of skimming devices from reading the card's full magnetic stripe. Diebold is launching ActivEdge to help financial institutions avoid skimmingrelated fraud losses, www.atmandcards.com

which according to the ATM Industry Association totals more than $2 billion annually.

"ActivEdge subtly alters the ATM card user experience, while greatly shifting the balance of power in the fight against ATM crime," said Frank Natoli, Jr., executive vice president and chief innovation officer at Diebold, in a July 29 press release.

"Altering the card orientation has crippling consequences for skimming devices. With ActivEdge, financial institutions will be able to stay ahead of today's sophisticated devices and fraud attacks." Diebold's patent-pending ActivEdge has encrypted communication to the ATM's central processing unit that eliminates the ability to fraudulently capture and track data. Additionally, each reader is paired with a specific ATM, impeding the installation of fraudulent readers. Meanwhile, to counteract card trapping attacks, ActivEdge features an automatic gate-locking function that prevents fraudsters from freeing trapped cards. The European ATM Security Team reports that card trapping incidents have increased in the continent by 98% from 2,726 attacks in 2012 to 5,394 in 2013.

CBN confirms banks’ compliance on Anti-Skimming devices on ATMs The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has confirmed more than 90 per cent of the banks operating in the country have complied with its directive to install Anti-Scheming devices on their Automated Teller Machines, ATMs The Anti-Skimming device is to help protect banks’ customer against fraud from fraudsters that uses various means. The CBN’s Director, Banking & Payments System Department, Mr. DipoFatokun , who confirmed this development at a meeting hosted by the Nigeria Electronic Fraud Forum( NeFF) featuring the CBN, Deposit Money Banks, DMBs and other stakeholders in Lagos, said that the CBN has gone to the banks’ ATMs to check compliance and to ensure that the banks complied with the directive. He added that the CBN expect the few banks that have not fully complied but have shown commitment would comply soonest. In his remark on electronic fraud, he said “We have to admit the fact that fraudsters are always deploying new strategies and this is why this forum would continue to meet, collaborate, cooperate and discuss. That does not mean there won’t be an end to it. The truth is that it is reducing and it will continue to reduce, but for it to reduce further we need to think ahead of the fraudsters and this why the stakeholders will continue to discuss.”

Africa, the least ATM populated region in the world Data from the World Bank ranked Africa as the continent with the least amount of ATMs available – with South Africa ranking highest on the continent. The lack of banking points and financial facilities has led to a significant rise in alternatives, such as mobile banking. South Africa ranks 46th in the world for distribution of cash machines with 60 ATMs per 100,000 of the population, countries such as Chad, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone statistically have 0 ATMs per 100,000 population. In Nigeria, the ATM market is rather underdeveloped when one compares the ratio of available ATMs to the

www.atmandcards.com

country's population. Currently there are only 15 ATMs per 100,000 inhabitants to cover the country's constantly growing need for basic banking services. Ranked based on data from the World Bank, the Republic of Korea is the most ATM dense country in the world, with 282 ATMs per 100,000 people, followed by Canada and Portugal with 205 and 185 ATMs fer 100,000 people, respectively. According to a map from the Guardian, based on the World Bank Data, the Americas, Australia, Russia and most of Europe have wide-spread ATM networks.

CBN clears the air on introduction of fees on remote-on-us ATM transactions The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has addressed the concerns of the Nigerian banking public over the impending reintroduction of fees/charges on the extended use of other banks’ Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). The apex bank in a statement issued in Abuja by the Director, Corporate Communications Department, Ibrahim Mu’azu, noted that reactions to the announcement “have been mixed with most commentators showing great understanding and other stakeholders expressing clear lack of understanding of the rationale for this decision of the Bankers’ Committee.” CBN then went ahead to further explain “the rationale and the critical need for this measure which has been taken in order to ensure that ATMs across the country continue to function to the satisfaction of all bank customers.” The apex bank explained as follows: 1. Cash withdrawal at the ATMs of a customer’s bank is free 2. “Remote-on-Us” transaction is when a card holder goes to the ATM machine of another bank other than his or her own bank to make a withdrawal. 3. December 2012: The CBN, in collaboration with the Bankers’ Committee, transferred the payment of N100 fee on “Remoteon-us” ATM cash withdrawal transactions to issuing banks. 4. The N100 was never removed. It was only transferred to customer’s bank to pay, and this was intended to encourage/promote the use of ATMs nationwide. 5. Having sufficiently raised customers’ awareness, the first three “Remote-on-Us” transactions in a month are FREE for the card holder but PAID FOR by the issuing bank 6. The N65 charge only applies when a customer withdraws cash from another bank’s ATM other than that of his/her bank. The N65 starts to apply from the 4th transaction at another banks’ ATM in a month. 7. The charge is not intended to discourage financial inclusion 8. The CBN will not endorse any anti-customer policy 9. Charging of fees on interbank networks is a widely acceptable practice globally Reasons for ATM charges: •To ensure customers get better services •To increase healthy competition among the banks •Transaction volumes at other banks’ ATM have increased astronomically due to the free cash withdrawal at other banks’ ATM. •The wear and tear as well as the frequency of servicing the ATMs have increased significantly. •Indeed, some customers were beginning to abuse the use of ATMs through countless daily withdrawals; •This development has led to increase in cash transactions, which negate the Bank’s Cash-less policy. •Maintaining ATM is expensive and it requires economic incentive for owners to deploy and maintain these machines. •If a part of this cost goes unabated, the banks may be forced to reject transactions coming from their customers at another bank ATMs, thereby frustrating the interoperability of payment systems. The CBN wishes therefore to reassure the public that the long term interests and welfare of all bank customers remain the goal of all banking policies.

ATM Machine Helps Indian Women Quietly Report Rape Without Going To The Police

The environment facing many Indian women, particularly in rural areas of the country is cruel such that victims of rape cannot report to the police or press charges against their rapists and abusers. If they do, members of their family can be threatened with death for going to the police. Also many women don’t feel safe in police stations mainly because the profession remains dominated by men, and women are often subject to sexual harassment if they walk into the station without being accompanied by a male relative. But Joydeep Nayak, a senior member of the police force in India, is working to change that. Nayak developed an electronic kiosk resembling an ATM machine that allows women to discreetly log police reports in public places. The so-called “Instant Complaint Logging Internet Kiosk,” or “iClik,” has been installed in a bank in Bhubaneswar as part of a sixmonth pilot project to test the innovation. “Women were being denied a fundamental right because of this fear of going to the police. Why should they need someone’s help to do something so basic?” Nayak pointed out in a recent interview with the Toronto Star. To address that, his iClik system is designed to be accessible for all Indians, whether or not they’re literate. Users can enter their complaints by recording them, typing them, or scanning a piece of paper. The machine sends the files to the closet police station, and each woman receives a receipt with information about how to track the status of her complaint. So far, it seems to be working. The Toronto Star reports that about eight to ten women use the machine every day and Nayak hopes to eventually expand the iClik program to schools, railway stations and bus stations, all over the country — so that women can walk in, complain and leave without any escort or hassles.

New Visa Service to Help Gas Station Retailers Reduce Fraud at the Pump

Visa Inc the global leader in payments, is helping U.S. fuel retailers prevent credit and debit card fraud at the pump with intelligent analytics that identify higherrisk transactions that may be fraudulent. While global fraud rates across the Visa payment system remain near historic lows – less than 6 cents for every $100 transacted – fuel pumps can be targets for criminals because they are often selfservice terminals. The new solution, Visa Transaction Advisor (VTA), enables merchants to use real-time authorization risk scores to identify transactions that could involve lost, stolen or counterfeit cards. A pilot test of the new service showed a 23 percent reduction in the rate of fraudulent transactions – all without costly infrastructure upgrades or disruption of the customer experience. “Visa Transaction Advisor uses sophisticated analytics based on the breadth and scale of VisaNet data to flag the riskiest transactions,” said Mark Nelsen, Vice President of Risk Products and Business Intelligence, Visa Inc. “By working with fuel companies to understand their needs, we were able to create a new service that builds on Visa’s predictive analytics capabilities, providing fuel merchants with more intelligence to prevent fraud and improve their bottom line.” Visa Transaction Advisor is available to merchants through participating U.S. acquirers. Visa has partnered with Vantiv and is also working with other acquirers to offer the service to its fuel clients.
