New VP of Institutional Development and Executive Director of the GMC Foundation Allen Simmons has been promoted to Vice President of Institutional Development and Executive Director of the GMC Foundation. He will provide leadership and strategic focus to further GMC’s development, alumni relations, community relations, marketing, communications, and engagement initiatives. In addition, Allen will continue to build the institution’s image and foster relationships with stakeholders. He has been a member of the GMC Family for 13 years. He holds a Master of Education from Georgia Southern University and a Specialist in Educational Leadership from Georgia College & State University. In addition, Allen has also received three leadership certificates from Harvard Graduate School. He is

a class of 2022 Leadership Baldwin Graduate and was named the 2017-18 GMC Character Educator of the Year. Allen coached many sports teams and was named State Coach of the Year in 2016. He was promoted to Athletic Director of the Prep School in 2019, and in 2021 became the Associate Principal of the elementary school. Allen was instrumental in revamping the Prep School Casino Night fundraiser, doubling the revenue from previous years, and under his leadership, he helped take the Honorary Class Member Appeal to new heights, with the Class of 2034 setting a record for their number of honorary class members. He created the ‘Grand’ program for grandparents to participate in their grandchild’s GMC journey with special events throughout the school year. In addition, Allen created an environment to promote community leader involvement in the elementary school with events like Read Across America.

In his new role with Institutional Development, Allen will work closely with GMC leadership and will be directly involved with alumni, friends, and families of GMC including the GMC Alumni Association and the GMC Foundation. He will build upon the relationships Institutional Development has worked to cultivate over the years and will work strategically to increase donor support for GMC programs, as well as secure gifts and grants from private foundations and government sources. “With a heart for philanthropy and a deep commitment to GMC, Allen is a perfect fit for this position,” said Lieutenant General William B. Caldwell, IV, President of GMC. “He will be a great leader to continue the terrific work already being done in Institutional Development.” Allen and his wife, Amber, have two daughters in the prep school.

Introducing Incoming Prep School Principals Colonel Amy Lee promoted to Principal of GMC Preparatory School For the last 18 years, COL Lee has been an integral member of the GMC Prep School family. She completed her practicums and her teaching internship at the Prep School and went on to earn her Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from Georgia College & State University in 2005. That same year, she returned to

GMC Prep School to teach high school English, where she was a consistent favorite teacher of many students and was named STAR teacher, Teacher of the Year, and Character Educator of the Year throughout her teaching career. She was promoted to Assistant Principal and Curriculum Director in 2019, promoted to Associate Principal in 2021, and named Interim Principal of the Prep School in early 2023. Throughout her tenure, COL Lee has consistently demonstrated her commitment to academic excellence and

dedication to the success of our students. Her experience in education, coupled with a deep understanding of the unique values of this school, make her the ideal candidate to lead GMC Prep School into the future. “Under COL Lee’s leadership, we are confident that GMC Prep will continue to thrive and grow,” said LtGen William B. Caldwell IV, President of GMC. “She has already proven herself to be a strong leader, and we are excited to see her continue serving our students as the leader of GMC Prep School.”

LTC Stephanie McMillan appointed as Assistant Principal for GMC Elementary School LTC Stephanie McMillan is poised to make a significant impact on the school's academic environment and the success of its students. McMillan brings with her a wealth of experience in the field of education, having served in various leadership roles throughout her career. Her most recent role was Assistant Principal at Lakeview Primary School. She holds a bachelor's and master's degree from Georgia College & State University (GCSU), as well as an Education Specialist degree

in Teaching and Learning from Georgia Southern University. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Curriculum and Instruction from GCSU. McMillan's passion for fostering a nurturing and stimulating learning environment aligns perfectly with GMC Prep's mission of academic rigor and character development. As the Assistant Principal, McMillan will work closely with the school's administration, faculty, and staff to ensure a high-quality educational experience for every student. She will play a vital role in implementing curriculum enhancements, promoting innovative teaching methods, and fostering a positive and inclusive school culture. In 2011, Georgia Military College initiated a partnership with the United States Coast Guard Academy (CGA) to serve as a Service Academy Prep School for cadets. While there was genuine excitement for the potential of this new academic venture, the past eleven years of this program have exceeded all expectations. GMC is proud to have created a program instrumental in developing the skills needed for aspiring cadets to be accepted into a United States Military Service Academy. “At GMC, we have developed a challenging

Students attending the GMC Service Academy Prep program all have a desire to receive an appointment to a Service Academy yet did not receive it at the conclusion of their senior year of high school. Each Service Academy has the option of recommending these students for prep programs like the one at GMC. This gives them a year to strengthen their academics as well as their physical conditioning to have the opportunity to be considered for appointment the following year.

There are multiple reasons why GMC’s Service Academy Prep Program has been highly successful. The Service Academy Prep program is rooted in the fundamental values that have existed at Georgia Military College since 1879 Duty, Honor, and Love of Country. The cadets have the unique opportunity to attend a prep program at a leadership institute focused on a character-based education. GMC Service Academy Prep Cadets are held to rigorous academic standards, with a class load that is almost twice that of a normal student. The academic courses are heavily STEM-focused to best prepare students for a service academy. The courses have been personalized and approved by each service academy, and the GMC schedule of classes closely mimics the schedule at the academies as well. Cadets participate in daily PT, a rigorous physical fitness program designed to develop the cadets to be in top shape upon arrival to their respective academies. Cadets are offered extracurricular activities with a variety of clubs to choose from, and must participate in traditional Corps of Cadets activities like the Leadership Engagement Series, community service projects, and various GMC events and ceremonies. GMC Alumnus LT Rick Scott (GMC JC 2013, CGA 2017) serves as Coast Guard Academy Scholars (CGAS) Program Manager for the CGA and has a unique vantage point of GMC’s program, as he works in admissions. “When we appoint a student, we have the absolute confidence that they have the potential to succeed. So when we come across an applicant who meets all the criteria that we’re looking for, but we believe may not be equipped for the

academic rigors of the Coast Guard Academy, we offer them the opportunity to fill that gap. GMC has proven throughout our relationship that they can serve in that capacity. This program gives individuals the experience, development, and tools that they need to be successful at CGA, and ultimately as a Coast Guard Officer,” shared LT Scott. ENS Michelle Kwafo (GMC JC 2019, CGA 2023) is a shining example of how GMC prepares cadets for successful academy careers. While at the CGA, she was a Cyber Systems major, a member of the Genesis Council, and was the Captain of the Women’s Track and Field Team, holding many of the CGA track records. Kwafo also served as President of the CGA Class of 2023. “The Academy Scholars Program helped me immensely to assimilate into military life. Having no military background, I did not have the privilege of knowing family or friends with military experience to guide me. However, the prep program provided me with an extra year of academic and military training necessary for me to report to the Coast Guard Academy wellequipped, confident, and ready to help and lead those who were new to the process and needed support,” shared Kwafo. Kwafo noted that GMC created an environment for learning that helped her develop and grow as a leader. “GMC provided me with many opportunities to step into leadership roles and exercise my decision-making abilities, also allowing me to make mistakes along the way from which I could learn. This practice aided my success and ability to lead during Swab summer, on the track

team, as a division officer, and as President of the Class of 2023.” 2LT Harry Combs (GMC JC 2019, USMA 2023) was GMC’s first United States Military Academy West Point (USMA) appointment from the Service Academy Prep Program. He noted that GMC provided him with true preparation for life at a service academy. “GMC introduced me to the structured and demanding schedule of a military academy. The program gave me the opportunity to develop in an environment away from home, make lifelong friends, and travel for various clubs, teams, and classes. The level of care that the administration and leadership showed us as cadets is something I hope to reciprocate to my soldiers. I am grateful for my experiences at GMC and I am glad to be a GMC Bulldog,” shared 2LT Combs. GMC also provides opportunities for non-sponsored cadets. These cadets did not receive an appointment to their desired academy and were not offered a sponsorship for a prep program. Instead of taking an easier path, they chose to attend GMC to pursue the opportunity to receive their appointment. In the 2022-2023 academic year there were ten of these cadets at GMC and seven of them earned an appointment to their desired service academy.

“Even when the academy turned me down, GMC saw potential in me that had yet to be developed. They helped me with areas of my application that were lacking and gave me the opportunities to further develop my leadership skills. But more than anything, GMC helped me turn what I thought was a ‘no’ into a ‘try again,’" shared Josephine Buckland (GMC JC 2013). Josephine just completed the Scholar Program in May 2023 and received her appointment to the United States Air Force Academy as a non-sponsored cadet. She was able to complete her two-year degree from GMC and received her diploma as well. For this upcoming academic year, 19 non-sponsored cadets have chosen GMC to help prepare them for consideration for next year's appointments. The success of this program is an institution-wide effort that encompasses all areas of leadership from the President,Main Campus Leadership, and the Commandant's Office, to a dedicated faculty and institutional support staff. Deputy Commandant LTC (Ret) Rob Ramirez heads up this program from the Commandant's team and speaks of the GMC teamwork that has produced tremendous success. “There is an exceptional level of personal involvement and unwavering commitment shown by our leadership, (continued—next page)

SERVE AND PROTECT GMC LAUNCHES PUBLIC SAFETY LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

FUTURE LEADERS IN PUBLIC SAFETY ARE MADE HERE. Georgia Military College has created a new program beginning Fall 2023. The Public Safety Leadership Program will create the next generation of leaders in public safety. At GMC, we support law enforcement, and to that end, we have designed a training program to provide a young cadet with two years of leadership training, certification to become a mandated officer, and a two-year associate degree to give them the tools necessary to be the most successful Peace Officer in Georgia. Public Safety cadets will learn in-depth career-relevant topics from certified law enforcement professionals, ensuring they will excel in their future career.

WHY GMC? Law Enforcement agencies throughout the State of Georgia have a strict hiring process that can take months, and many agencies prefer to hire candidates that have already earned their Peace Officer Certification. In addition, most agencies prefer to hire candidates over the age of 18. Upon completing the Public Safety Leadership Program, cadets will have obtained an associate degree, Peace Officer Certification, and will be ready to lead in a new career as a well-prepared, and well-trained graduate of this program at Georgia Military College. In addition to earning their Associate in Criminal Justice or Homeland Security, these cadets will receive extensive training in leadership, character, values, fitness, investigations, emergency vehicle operations, firearms, defensive tactics, and officer resiliency.

PEACE OFFICER CERTIFICATION Through the Public Safety Leadership Program, cadets will train for Basic Mandate. Upon completion, cadets will be certified as a Peace Officer in the State of Georgia through the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, which is the governing body for all law enforcement throughout Georgia. Cadets will be job ready and leaders for agencies throughout the State.

ACADEMICS The Public Safety Leadership Program provides rigorous academic courses and focused classes to best prepare students for a career in law enforcement. GMC offers five academic terms every year and some of the typical courses for our cadets include: Leadership, Criminal Justice, Communications, Math, English, and Forensic Sciences. In addition to coursework, our cadets will be developed in the skills required to excel at Basic Mandate and become the best law enforcement officers.

Inaugural Leadership & Character Development Course Georgia Military College completed the first annual Leadership & Character Development Course (LCDC), developed to foster authentic servant leadership skills and enhance character development among the Corps of Cadets. The week-long course was designed to provide our cadets with a comprehensive understanding of leadership principles and styles, communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. The course also focused on character development, including ethical reasoning, decision-making, integrity, responsibility, and self-discipline. These values are fundamental to GMC’s mission of producing responsible citizens and leaders. At the completion of the course, cadets earn three college credit hours and a leadership certificate.

JROTC JCLC Camps This year we hosted three camps, two Army and one Air Force. In total we trained 667 JROTC Cadets from 51 High Schools over three weeks. GMC awarded 30 full ride scholarships to rising seniors that were selected by their JROTC Cadre as top performing cadets.

Community service Our Cadets supported numerous organizations this year with the bulk of their service taking place at the Georgia War Veterans home here in Milledgeville and our regimental project “Picking up Putnam.” GMC's Regimental project was a large area spread over eight sites in Eatonton City/Putnam County.

When we think of a family that epitomizes a heart of generosity, it is the Ferguson family. The late Dr. John H. Ferguson was a graduate of both GMC high school (1961) and the junior college (1963). He served as President of the GMC Alumni Association and at the time of his passing, was serving as an advisor to the GMC Board of Trustees as well as 1st Vice Chairperson of the GMC Foundation. Throughout the years, Dr. Ferguson and his wife Janet contributed in a multitude of ways to GMC, not only in service but financially as well. Our prep school and college students greatly benefit from the Ferguson Health Services Center in Usery Hall, the Ferguson Multi-Use Basketball Court in the Kidd Center, and the Ferguson Upper Lobby in the new Prep School Annex. Now, Mrs. Ferguson and her daughter Emily have decided to take their love of GMC a step further and have established an endowed scholarship in memory of Dr. John Ferguson. When Dr. Ferguson returned to Milledgeville to open his orthodontic practice, he and Mrs. Ferguson immediately immersed themselves in the GMC community. “From that time on I doubt he missed a year supporting the school. GMC was his favorite place to support because he attended the school from 8th grade through GMC Junior College. His time at Georgia Military College made a truly lasting impact on him and he received an excellent education. John felt so indebted to GMC, that he wanted to try and pay it forward,” shared Mrs. Ferguson. Dr. and Mrs. Ferguson sent their daughter, Emily May (Prep 1984), to GMC Prep School and were further impressed by the quality of the education she received. Emily, like her father before her, was positively impacted by her GMC experience. She went on to attend Emory and excelled there due to the foundation she received at GMC. After graduating from Emory, Emily earned her PharmD degree from Mercer University School of Pharmacy. “GMC has the motto ‘Start here…go anywhere.’ GMC prepared both John and Emily for the finest colleges, “said Mrs. Ferguson. The Fergusons are proud to now have 16

another GMC Bulldog in the family, Lily Wall, Mrs. Ferguson’s greatgranddaughter. Lily recently graduated kindergarten at GMC Prep Elementary School and will start first grade in the fall of 2023. “We have a true family legacy here at GMC. It is a dream come true to have Lily attend school here. I never thought I would have a great-grandchild at GMC. It means so much to our family. I think GMC offers the very best education and environment for children,” noted Mrs. Ferguson. The family is especially grateful for how GMC instills the love of learning in its students, noting she would love for Lily to attend GMC all the way through high school. With fondness, she shared how Dr. Ferguson would be over the moon to see his greatgranddaughter attend his alma mater, a school he loved so dearly. Mrs. Ferguson and Emily recently decided to endow a scholarship in Dr. Ferguson’s memory to bless the lives of other GMC Prep School families. “I know there has been such a need for scholarship assistance due to the pandemic and so many families having a hard time. I am excited this scholarship will help someone in need. I am sure it will bring more joy to me than the family that receives this scholarship,” shared Mrs. Ferguson. It is this passion for giving back that sets the Fergusons apart. They do not give out of obligation, but out of a true joy in helping students and the institution that has impacted their life so much. Mrs. Ferguson hopes that their family’s story can encourage other GMC alumni to start living out a life of generosity. “John began by giving a little bit to GMC when he didn’t have a lot to give, but he started contributing at a young age and over time, it grew into something very special,” she shared. “I firmly believe that it is more blessed to give than receive. It truly enriches my life to support GMC. When Emily and I decided to create this scholarship, it filled my heart with joy. I know John would have absolutely loved this. It makes me feel good to think that this endowed scholarship will help students for years and years to come.”

Reflections: THE IMPACT OF THE

Usery Legacy Fund When the Honorable W. J. “Bill” Usery set the plans in place to bequeath GMC millions of dollars, it was an unprecedented gift. But a donation of that size was still unmatched to the love he had for GMC students. As we look forward to the upcoming school year, those students who first benefited from Mr. Usery’s generosity with free uniforms will be graduating from the school of which Mr. Usery had so much affection. With the massive growth of our Prep School in recent years, many families are not familiar with the story of Mr. Usery. As such, we are republishing his inspiring story, one which epitomizes the mission of Georgia Military College - to prepare our graduates to live lives with purpose as authentic servant leaders.

THIS YEAR'S SENIORS WERE THE FIRST STUDENTS TO RECEIVE THE USERY LEGACY FUND AS 6TH GRADERS

The Usery Legacy Fund was established in 2017 to preserve in perpetuity the memory of GMC’s most distinguished Georgia Military College Preparatory School alumnus, and former United States Secretary of Labor, the Honorable W.J. Usery, Jr. Now seven years later, students continue to benefit from Mr. Usery’s legacy, generosity, and love for GMC Prep. Since its first awarding in 2017, the Usery Legacy Fund has provided nearly 1300 uniforms for GMC Prep students. Mrs. Jill Smith (mother of GMC alumni Dylan and Carson and current prep students Bryce-12th grade and Aubrey-6th grade) recalls the impact this gift had on her family in 2017, “When our son Bryce entered 6th grade in the fall of 2017, we already had two sons attending GMC. It was wonderful to discover the gift that Mr Usery had bestowed on GMC families. It was such a blessing to find out that Bryce’s uniforms would be provided through the Usery Legacy Fund. This gift eases the financial burden on so many families. My husband and I are believers in the uniform providing equal ground and unity for students from all financial and cultural backgrounds. We have personally benefited again, since we have a daughter now entering the 6th grade. We are very grateful for the ongoing legacy of Mr Usery and his generous Fund.” 18

The origin story of The Usery Legacy Fund is truly inspiring. Mr. Usery was touched by the actions of his mother, Effie Mae Williamson Usery, who left her job as a nurse to become a laundress at Central State Hospital to ensure that her son would have a clean, pressed GMC cadet uniform every morning. The proceeds of this endowment significantly defray the costs of the initial school uniform requirement, eliminate a financial barrier, and honor Secretary Usery’s own personal experience of having worn a patched uniform while he was a student at GMC’s Prep School. His wish was for every student to own at least one set of brand-new uniforms, and it is so inspiring on that first day of school to see all new students wearing their new uniforms with such pride. His mother’s sacrifices were never lost on Mr. Usery and her life lessons were never forgotten. She instilled in her son compassion, fairness, humor and honesty – qualities that he brought to the table throughout his successful career and qualities which carried him through his storied life. Mrs. Usery’s sacrifice for her son and the hope she had for his future truly molded the pathway for Secretary Usery’s success.

The theme of the essay is a reflection of “What GMC Prep Has Meant to Me” or “The Impact GMC Has Had on Me,” to model Secretary Usery’s lifetime reflection of what being a student at GMC Prep meant to him. Mr. Douglas Henne, Trustee of the Usery Family Trust, shared his thoughts about this milestone year as those first awarded their GMC uniform in 6th grade will now graduate from GMC Prep in 2024. "This year's graduating class at GMC will experience yet another tangible confirmation of the foresight and generosity of Bill Usery, who credited much of his own success in life to the education and values he absorbed at GMC. As Trustee of the Usery Family Trust, I am delighted to witness the achievement of this milestone in Mr. Usery's legacy of respect, gratitude, and affection for this wonderful institution." All GMC Prep tenth grade students will receive four books representing the foundations of democracy in the United States: The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, George Washington’s Rules of Civility, and Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, to supplement their educational requirement of tenth grade U.S. History. Georgia Military College offers unique opportunities for student-athletes to continue their education at a historical leadership institute while participating in highly competitive intercollegiate athletics. There is an established history of success in all programs producing National Championships, Conference Championships and All-American Athletes. There have been 54 GMC Junior College football alumni who have played in the NFL and two current NFL coaches who have coached at GMC as well. This displays GMC's value to contribute to success in the classroom and in athletic competition. As a leadership institute we are committed to developing the entire leader both mentally and physically. Our organizational effort focuses on effective preparation to be successful. GMC is firmly engaged with those principles while also recognizing the need for improvement as we continue to grow.

Alumni Awards Distinguished Alumnus Award DR. TIM COLLINS

The Distinguished Alumnus Award is the highest honor given by the Alumni Association and recognizes an individual who has distinguished themselves in an outstanding manner and has brought honor to themselves and to GMC. It is presented for service to humanity and dedication that exemplifies the core values of “Duty, Honor, Country” and the regimental accolade of “Character Above All” in their personal and professional life.

Tim Collins JC 1978 After completing an impressive Air Force career marked by duty and service to the nation, Dr. Tim Collins (JC 1978) has distinguished himself as a true leader and scholar in Catholic higher education as well. Dr. Collins graduated from Tucker High School at 16 and attended GMC JC from 1976-1978, where he credits GMC and the Army with helping him “grow up.” It was here at GMC where he learned foundational lessons in integrity and perseverance, ideals he has applied throughout his notable career. At GMC, he met his wife Drenda, who also attended GMC JC from 1976-1977. He earned a competitive twoyear ROTC scholarship and served as Battalion XO, and graduated with distinction, earning an associate degree in Engineering from GMC. He received appointments to multiple service academies, selecting to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy from 1978-1982. As the top Cadet in his class, Dr. Collins was chosen to serve as Cadet Wing Commander while at the Air Force Academy. He credits this achievement to the exemplary education and military training he received as a GMC Junior College Cadet. Dr. Collins earned a Bachelor of Science from the United States Air Force Academy, a Master of Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, a Master of Science from the National War College, and a Doctor of Education degree from Benedictine University. From 1982 to 1997, he served in a variety of staff and operational assignments gaining experience as a pilot and staff officer in the U.S. Air Force across Asia, Europe, and the United States. He served as commander for a ground combat unit that was fully integrated into one of the three elite U.S. Army Ranger battalions during Operations Desert Shield/Storm. Dr. Collins served as a U.S. Air Force Senior Officer from 1997-2005. Throughout this time, he served as commander in four of the five senior officer assignments. Dr. Collins was responsible for all aspects of mission success in peacetime, armistice, and in combat. He also served as commander for three combat units, responsible for all aspects of aircraft maintenance, flying operations, as well as people and resource management. In addition, he served as America’s senior military representative in the United Arab Emirates. He was promoted to Colonel in 1999 with only 15 years of service, becoming the youngest Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. He has more than 4,000 flying hours, including over 260 combat hours, as a command pilot in a variety of aircraft. He is a U.S. Air Force Command Pilot, a military parachutist, and is a credentialed Board President for both aviation Safety Investigation Boards and Accident Investigation Boards. Dr. Collins retired from the United States Air Force in 2005. His military honors include Aerial Achievement Medals, Air Medals, Aircrew Safety Award of Distinction, Bronze Star, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legions of Merit, and the Purple Heart. After retiring from the Air Force, Dr. Collins served as an executive leader at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland for 14 years. In 2014, Dr. Collins was chosen as the inaugural Chief Government Relations Officer, heading up activities across the $1.7B portfolio. In 2019, he became the seventh President and Chief Executive Officer for Walsh University, a multi-national and multi-million-dollar Catholic higher education enterprise. The Board of Directors has extended Dr. Collins’ appointment as President through 2027. Dr. Collins and his wife of 40 years, Drenda, have a beautiful family made up of their three adult children, Jonathan, Maree, and Chet, and 14 grandchildren.

Ron Moses JC 2008

Dr. Ron Moses is a true GMC success story. He enrolled at GMC Junior College with a 10th grade education and a GED in 2006. Although he was nervous about attending college, he took advantage of every opportunity available to him and embarked on an educational journey at GMC that set him up for future success as a higher education professional. After graduating from GMC in 2008, Moses earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia, master’s degree from Western Kentucky University, and Ph.D. from Kansas State University. Moses is a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and Army National Guard, having served for the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and the 3rd Infantry Division. He served from 2006-2016. Dr. Moses is currently the Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations & Student-Athlete Welfare at Old Dominion University. Moses joined ODU in 2019. Moses provides leadership, oversight, and supervision related to internal operations of the athletics department, including the athletic academic advising centers, the compliance program, alumni relations, sports supervision of the baseball program, and all facets of student-athlete welfare, including mental health and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. He is instrumental in providing direction and leadership to establish, implement, and accomplish program objectives, managing and coordinating services with various university offices, overseeing the delivery of services to targeted program participants, and compiling and maintaining appropriate records. He supervises the hiring and training of internal and student facing staff members; long-range planning and scheduling; program evaluation and content design; policy development and implementation; public relations; budget development and management; upholding NCAA, Conference, and University rules and regulations. He also oversees matters concerning eligibility, admissions, financial aid, rules education, and monitoring procedures. Moses additionally serves as the department research and evaluator, provides education and professional development for students and staff, and serves as the diversity and inclusion designee. His research and community service work centers primarily around student engagement for first generation and non-traditional students and helping transitioning vets entering the workforce. Ron was integral in setting football program records for overall grade point average and number of athletes above a 3.0 GPA during his time working at Georgia State University and the University of South Florida. Under his direction the South Florida softball program received the 2015-2016 American Athletic Conference Team Academic Excellence Award for the highest cumulative GPA in the conference. From 2013-2015, Ron was the Academic Football Coordinator at Kansas State University, where the program experienced three straight seasons with the highest GPA and Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the conference. Ron’s research is published in the Sociology of Sport Journal. He is a member of the National Association of Athletic Academic Advisors (N4A), where he serves on the Research and Ethnic Concerns Committee. Greg Countryman JC 2020

Gregory Dexter Countryman Jr. is a true emerging leader in the law enforcement community. He was born in Columbus, Georgia and received an Associate in Sociology from Georgia Military College-Columbus in 2020. Deputy Countryman is honored to be one of many proud graduates of Georgia Military College. He credits GMC with helping set a strong foundation for him in education and discipline. He chose to attend GMC because his father, Sheriff Greg Countryman, Sr. is also a proud (Class of 1997) graduate of Georgia Military College as well as a former Adjunct Professor for the GMC-Columbus campus. Deputy Countryman is currently serving as a Deputy Sheriff with the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office, where he is assigned to a task force that monitors over 700 registered sex offenders. As a newly appointed Deputy Marshall which is a major achievement in itself – he puts the lives of others first. He takes great pride in serving his community and keeping its citizens safe. Gregory was recently recognized by Piedmont Hospital and was selected as their monthly law enforcement hero. He saved the lives of three-year-old twins who were in danger of drowning. Deputy Countryman also received a Letter of Commendation from the Sheriff of Muscogee County for this selfless act. For the last two years, Gregory has worked with local youth through the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office Outreach Program, serving as a role model to those in a very troubled and at-risk environment. As a dedicated deputy of Muscogee County Sheriff’s Department, Deputy Countryman has participated in numerous community outreach programs and non-profit events, including Columbus Against Drugs, Autism Awareness, Resource Days, and Elementary School Game Trailer Events. He has helped coordinate youth celebration events for birthday parties and has spoken to high school students about careers in public safety. It is Gregory’s goal to be a positive role model to the youth in his community. He is no doubt an emerging leader in the law enforcement community and is an inspiration to his peers and his community.

The Military Service Award is given to a GMC Corps of Cadets alumnus who has rendered unusual and conspicuous service, heroic effort and action or service to their city, state or nation while bringing honor to GMC and the Corps of Cadets.

The GMC Service Award is given to GMC alumni or friends who have rendered special service to the school and their community through demonstrated involvement in campus and community organizations and activities. This is the highest recognition given for outstanding service and volunteerism.

Luther Beason JC 1967 LTC (Ret) Luther Beason represented America and Georgia Military College with honor and distinction throughout his entire military career, making him fully deserving of the GMC Military Service Award. He faithfully served the United States Army in Mortuary Affairs. He commissioned with the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps in the Graves Registration Service in 1968 (now called Mortuary Affairs.) LTC Beason is a veteran of both the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm, providing MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) expertise in an area that is seldom appreciated for the service it provides to military families. He served our country in insuring the return of the remains of deceased military personnel to the United States. LTC Beason is a native of Edgefield, South Carolina, and a graduate of Strom Thurmond High School in 1963. After high school, he enrolled at GMC and graduated in 1967, and then attended The University of Georgia, where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in 1969. LTC Beason credits GMC with “turning his life around” and helping him begin on a successful life path. While on active duty, he was a Systems Engineer/Instructor and Burial Team Officer in the Memorial Activities Branch in Fort Lee, VA from 1969-1970. He served in the Vietnam War, at OIC 483rd Field Services Co. Collection Points Long Binh Post and 3rd Brigade/9th Division Tan An RVN from January-April 1970. In addition, he worked at the OIC Central Identification Lab USA Mortuary Saigon RVN from May 1970-January 1971. From 1990-1991, he was Chief Joint Mortuary Affairs Officer at U.S. CENTCOM during Operation Desert Storm. LTC Beason, while on reserve duty, served as Assistant Chief of Memorial Activities Branch in Fort Lee from 1973-1976, and was Chief from 1977-1980. During the years 1981-1990, he served as Logistics Officer in Mortuary Affairs at the Pentagon. From 19901996, LTC Beason was the Chief Joint Mortuary Affairs Officer at U.S. CENTCOM. He is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades: the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Services Commendation Medal, Army Reserve Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, U.S. Vietnam Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Saudi Arabia Liberation of Kuwait Medal and the Kuwait Liberation of Kuwait Medal. On January 29, 2001, six years after his retirement, LTC Beason was honored by the Quartermaster General, Fort Lee, VA to receive the Distinguished Order of Saint Martin. This award is normally reserved for active-duty personnel. LTC Beason served as Deputy Coroner of Edgefield County, South Carolina from 1983-2018. He also served as First Vietnam Veteran Commander of American Legion Post 30, was the Edgefield County representative for the American Red Cross, and served in employee support with the National Guard and Reserves. He is a past president and Board of Directors member for the Greater Augusta UGA Bulldog Club, as well as for Pine Ridge Country Club. LTC Beason has shown his gratitude for Georgia Military College by financially contributing to Baugh Barracks, the Old Capitol Guard Battalion Headquarters, and the NewDay USA Center for Leadership.

MAJ (Ret) Eddie McCaffrey’s accomplishments and personal character brought distinct honor to the GMC Corps of Cadets throughout his military career. He attended GMC High School from 1959-1961 and continued his education at GMC JC from 1962 through 1964. After graduating in spring 1964, he stayed at GMC for the remaining school year, taking additional classes for college credit. He reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (Cadet Battalion Commander) and was designated a Distinguished Military Student as well. MAJ McCaffrey married Janet Kramer of Milledgeville, Georgia on June 6, 1964. Janet was a GMC football cheerleader during his first two years at GMC. Upon graduating from GMC, he attended Georgia Southern University, where he graduated in 1966 with a BBA degree. In 1966, he commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Finance Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve. MAJ McCaffrey served twenty years in the U.S. Army, with very successful duty assignments in the Finance & Accounting Sections both domestic and abroad. In 1967, he entered Officer’s Basic Course and from 1967–1970, he served as a Finance Services Officer Comptroller at HQ U.S. Army Pacific and as Finance Officer in Charge at Schofield Barracks Finance and Accounting Office, U.S. Army Hawaii. In the early to mid-1970’s he served in Stuttgart, Germany as a Finance and Accounting Officer. From 1985-1987, McCaffrey served in the Pentagon as Staff Finance and Accounting Officer for National Guard Offices and special operations outside the U.S. Throughout his military career, he also served as Prosecuting Officer for Summary and Special Court Marshals and as a Casualty Notification Officer. He received several military awards during his tenure: Legion of Merit Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal 2nd Award, Joint Service Commendation Medal 2nd Award, Army Commendation Medal 2nd Award, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Vietnamese Staff Service Medal, Secretary of Defense Identification Badge, Army Staff Identification Badge, and numerous certificates of achievement and letters of commendation. On September 30, 1987, MAJ McCaffrey retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of Major. After his military retirement, MAJ McCaffrey continued his career at organizations associated with the defense of our country. He was a Senior Auditor and Supervisor at Lockheed Martin Corporation from 1988-1998. He also worked at United Space Alliance LLC as Director of Internal Audit and Government Relations for NASA Space Shuttle Operations. He is involved with various charities including the March of Dimes, the American Red Cross, VFW, and other military and civilian organizations. MAJ McCaffrey and his late wife, Janet, share a son, Edward (Ed) McCaffrey, Jr. (Geneva) and one grandson, James.

Barb Rion has been a dedicated parent and supporter of Georgia Military College since her sons, Tyler (Prep 2018) and Matthew (Prep 2022), began their journey at GMC Preparatory School. She is very passionate about GMC and what the school has offered to her sons, as well as all it does for the community at large. Barb has served as a proud ambassador of all the amazing opportunities that GMC offers not only on the Main Campus, but also at GMC’s regional campuses throughout the state. While her sons were GMC Prep School students, Barb was an active member of the various parent groups that supported the cross country, soccer, and raiders teams. Furthermore, Barb also served on the GMC Prep Bulldog Club Executive Committee and gave of her time and talent as the Annual BBQ chair. In addition, Barb served as the Bulldog Club’s President/Vice President for the last few years up until this current school year. Barb is also a member of the Georgia Military College Foundation Board of Trustees, where she served in the capacity of Development Chair and Capital Campaign Co-Chair for GMC’s largest fundraising campaign in the history of the school, Be The One: The Campaign for Georgia Military College. Barb is currently serving as Vice Chair of the GMC Foundation Board. Barb began her professional career in finance after graduating from Miami University (Ohio) in 1994. She worked for Abbott Laboratories in Chicago and then in Columbus, Ohio, but after she married her husband, Dr. Seth Rion, they moved to Georgia, where she stepped into Telecommunications working for Sprint and then BellSouth. Barb then took a job working remotely for Qwest Communications, a company based out of Colorado, which is now called Lumen Technologies. For the last twelve years, Barb has served in a sales role as an account director with most of her concentration in wholesale voice services. Barb is a past member of the Milledgeville Civic Women’s Club and she has served on the Oconee Regional Hospital Foundation as Vice Chairman. She is an active board member and current treasurer of the Atrium Navicent Health Baldwin Auxiliary, and serves as the Council Chair for her church, Milledgeville First United Methodist. Barb has given so much to Georgia Military College Preparatory School because she loves how the school fosters a commitment to servant leadership and character, not only through the curriculum and educational activities, but also through GMC’s fine arts and athletics programs. Although her sons are now grown and in college, Barb remains a steadfast friend of Georgia Military College. Her commitment and service to GMC has certainly made this institution a better place.

He is a Community Bankers Association Leadership Board member and Division Chair. Jonathan was selected in 2022 as one of Milledgeville’s 20 Under 40 Outstanding Community Professionals. Jonathan is passionate about investing in his local community. He is a long-time member of the

Military Heritage Weekend GEORGIA MILITARY COLLEGE

Georgia Military College celebrated Military Heritage Weekend in April, honoring GMC alumni military men and women who serve our country. The event brought together members of the GMC family, community leaders, and visitors from around the region. Events kicked off Friday morning as Georgia Military College recognized the Vietnam Veterans 50th Homecoming Anniversary Commemoration with a special ceremony. GMC welcomed Captain Charlie Plumb, a former Navy fighter pilot who spent six years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Captain Plumb shared his powerful message of resilience and determination, inspiring all those in attendance. Following the Vietnam Veterans 50th Homecoming Anniversary Commemoration, the Hall of Heroes Luncheon was held in the Old Capitol Legislative Chamber where GMC inducted three new members to the Hall of Heroes. This pays tribute to alumni of the GMC Corps of Cadets who have demonstrated extraordinary service to our nation while bringing honor to GMC. This is the highest recognition for an alumnus of the GMC Corps of Cadets.

1LT Louis "Chap" Ashmore and his family, as well as the families of the late Honorable Powell Moore, and the late MAJ Joseph Uhler, celebrated this special honor with a private luncheon in the Legislative Chamber, followed by the formal induction during the Military Honors Ceremony. These three alumni are American heroes whose courage and sacrifice has made them worthy of this honorable distinction. We are proud of the leadership they have exhibited in serving their country and influencing their communities. Closing out the evening was the Grand Tattoo, a military tradition dating back to the 17th century and a fitting way to honor our nation’s veterans. This event, steeped in history and tradition, included special entertainment featuring the GMC Junior College Glee Club, which performed the GMC Alma Mater and God Bless America. The entire event was a tribute to the sacrifices and achievements of our military, and a testament to the enduring spirit of service that is deeply ingrained in the GMC community.

The event was held via Zoom, and was an incredible opportunity for GMC Cadets to hear first-hand from Makos about authoring the powerful story of his book titled Devotion, which was made into a major motion picture and released in November 2022. Makos is a renowned military historian, best known for his books A Higher Call, Spearhead, Voices of the Pacific, and Devotion, all of which document military members in combat who became heroes for our Nation.

1965

GMC Alumnus Henry Craig (HS '65, JC '67) has been selected to serve as president of the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG). Craig, who is now in his 11th year serving as a Baldwin County commissioner, was officially sworn into office as the new president of ACCG by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp at the ACCG's annual conference held at the Savannah Convention Center.

1970

Colonel (R) Lonnie Dale Vona (JC ’70) was awarded the Military Order of World Wars Silver Patrick Henry Award last fall for his leadership as Chapter Chairperson, Sun City Chapter of the JROTC/ROTC Outreach Committee. The Committee was recognized at the recent National Convention as Second in the Nation in support of JROTC/ROTC activities. Colonel Vona served as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at Furman University, as the Commander of 2nd ROTC Brigade, and Senior Army Instructor at Newsome High School. He currently resides in Valrico, Florida with his wife, Kathy.

Karen Seagraves (HS '78) was honored as she retired from her alma mater with 25 years of service to GMC. She has been a tremendous asset to GMC and the thousands of students and families she served in the bookstore over the years. The Seagraves family's connection to GMC is significant, including Karen's husband LTC Scott Seagraves (HS '80), a GMC Prep School history teacher and their three sons, Nathan, Zach and Joel, all GMC alums.

GMC celebrated the retirement of LTC Duane Clayton (JC ‘79) as Operations Officer of the Georgia Military College Corps of Cadets. As part of the celebrations, the Corps of Cadets presented LTC Clayton with a Commendation signed by the Governor of Georgia for his outstanding service and dedication in the U.S. Army and for his 10 years

LTC Charles "Buck" Bennett (Ret) (JC '85) was recently awarded with the Veterans Council of the Golden Isles Veteran of the Year Award! LTC Bennett, commander of VFW Post 4092 on St. Simons Island, received the award in December at the post’s annual Christmas dinner. LTC Bennett also serves GMC as a member of the Alumni Board of Directors.

COL (Ret) Bernard Warrington Jr. (JC '90) was recently inducted into the Quartermaster Hall of Fame, the highest form of recognition within the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps. Bernard is a retired U.S. Army Colonel and combat veteran. He served for 25 years on active duty, including initial years as an Infantry Officer with Multifunctional Logistics assignments and experiences. He currently serves as Director of Program Management for Rivertech.

U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich (HS '89) became the commander of Ninth Air Force (Air Forces Central) during a change of command ceremony at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, on July 21, 2022. Grynkewich will serve as the commander of 9 AF (AFCENT), the combined forces air component, the regional air defense commander, and other organizations. As AFCENT commander and CFACC, the 29-year veteran works closely with coalition, joint, and interagency partners to lead a team of teams - a combined force that delivers decisive air and space power and promotes security throughout U.S. CENTCOM’s 21-nation area of responsibility. Further, roughly 15,000 Airmen of the 332d, 378th, 379th, 380th, and 386th Air Expeditionary Wings as well as units such as the Combined Air Operations Center and Air Warfare Center will fall under his direction. Before taking command, Grynkewich served as the Director of Operations, U.S. CENTCOM. He has commanded at the squadron, wing, and Air Expeditionary Task Force levels. He also served as the Deputy Commander for Operations for Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve. Grynkewich earned his commission in 1993 after graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy. He has served as an instructor pilot, weapons officer, and operational

Reverend Charles A. "Drew" Collins, Jr. (JC '91) accepted a call to St. Andrew's Anglican Church in Savannah. He most recently served as a hospice chaplain in the Charleston, SC, area and is a doctoral student at Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, South Carolina.

GMC alumnus LTC Antonio Barroso (ECP '00) recently ran into another GMC alum while attending Joint Combined Warfare School at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Va. LTC Thomas Harper (ECP '04) was also attending the course. Harper (left) is currently assigned as the Policy Branch Chief in the Strategic Plans and Policy Division, Army National Guard G-3/5 directorate at NGB in Arlington, Va. Barroso (right) is assigned as a Synchronization Officer for Ground and Combat Systems in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisitions Logistics and Technology in the Pentagon.

LTC James Walton (JC '05, ECP) was recently promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army. LTC Walton is based in Hawaii, where he currently is a full-time graduate student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. LTC Walton's three daughters pinned on his new rank, with assistance from his mother, Amy. LTC Walton is a combat engineer and has been selected for battalion command once he completes his master’s degree.

Chambers Hurley (HS ‘12) and husband, Keagan. The couple recently welcomed a new addition to their family, Luke. Big sister Mia is just smitten. Haylee is the daughter of GMC alumni Bruce Chambers (HS '87) and Fancy Robinson (HS '88). Keagan Hurley is currently a 6th grade social studies teacher at GMC Prep School. They look forward to their children growing up as part of the GMC family.

LT Zachary L. Seagraves (HS '08) has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander effective October 2022. Zach and his family, wife Laura and children, Nason and Arleigh, are currently stationed at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan where Zach is serving as the Navy Public Works Officer. He is the son of Scott (HS ’80) and Karen (HS ’78) Seagraves, and brother to Joel (HS ’05) and Nathan (HS ’10).

GMC Alumnus Erin McDade (HS '09) has embarked on an impressive and exciting career as a Game Warden in her hometown of Baldwin County. Every day, McDade is tasked with protecting natural resources, either by ATV, on foot, or in her truck. Erin recently ran into GMC President LTG William B. Caldwell, IV at the State Capitol in Atlanta.

Congratulations to Haylee

Dr. Taylore Brooks-King (HS '15) graduated from Mercer University School of Medicine in May with a Doctor of Medicine degree. She matched into an obstetrics and gynecology residency at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Atlanta. She married Dr. Russell King, who also graduated from Mercer’s medical school and is in residency at Emory University for Internal Medicine.

2016

Trip Williams (HS ’16) and Emma Rice (HS ’19) were married in August 2022 at Heartwood Acres in Eatonton. The wedding was a GMC family affair. Trip’s mother, Stephanie, is a GMC Prep elementary teacher. All of Emma’s bridesmaids and two of Trip’s groomsmen were GMC alumni. Emma completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Georgia College and State University in December 2022. Trip is the Environmental Health and Safety Specialist for Carbo Ceramics.

Adam Brooks (HS ‘13) married Karisma Quist on October 29, 2022. The newlyweds are living in Orlando, Fla.

Congratulations to Kaleigh Donnelly (HS ‘13) and Nathan Hardie (HS ‘13) who were married in May. Kaleigh is a 3rd generation GMC alumna. Her grandfather, Walter M. Donnelly Jr., attended GMC and so did her father, Walter M. Donnelly III. KeShawn Harris (HS '13) has been recognized as a Washington Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree. Throughout his career, KeShawn has been a dedicated social activist working tirelessly for the underserved and underpriviledged in the communities he calls home. KeShawn is the recipient of the 2020 Emerging Young Alumni Leader Award from the GMC Alumni Association. Matthew Langston (HS ’13) is temporarily stationed in England until the new wind farm is constructed off the coast of New England in 2023. His photo shows how Matthew gets from England to wind turbines 80 miles out in the North Sea. Matthew resides in Upstate New York.

Alex Bradley (HS ’17) graduated from Mercer Law School in May. Alex is the daughter of the Honorable Stephen Bradley, and his wife Lisa, and the granddaughter of GMC Honorary Alumnus and GMC Foundation Chairman Emeritus Dudley Rowe and his wife, Jenny.

US Coast Guard Academy Superintendent RADM Bill Kelly snapped this photo during his monthly visit with 1/c Kaylon Farley (HS '18). Farley served as the 2023 Regimental Commander for the US Coast Guard Academy.

ClassNotes Corey Bivins (HS '18) has accomplished incredible things in his athletic career since graduating from GMC. The Haddock, Ga. native played shortstop for North Greenville University. The team recently won the NCAA Division II Baseball World Series, and he is now playing baseball professionally for the Macon Bacon.

2019

Lyssa Blair (HS '19) has been named Outstanding Senior - Animal Health by the UGA College of Agriculture and Environmental Science (CAES). Lyssa is currently finishing her first year of veterinary medicine school concurrent with her senior year of undergrad as she was accepted to vet school with early admission. Michelle Kwafo (JC '19) and Kaylon Farley (HS '18) are graduates of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. They recently received their assignments at graduation in Spring 2023 from USCGA. From Ewing, NJ, Kwafo is a Cyber Systems major and a member of the Genesis Council. Kwafo was also the Captain of the Women’s Track and Field Team, and holds many of the CGA track records. Kwafo, who is the 2023 USCGA Class President, will be stationed at U.S. Coast Guard Cutter-Tahoma in New Port, RI. Farley will attend Flight School in Pensacola, Fla. Anna Caldwell Montgomery (HS '19) graduated in May from the U.S. Air Force Academy with a B.S. in English and a minor in Russian. She will attend the University of Virginia to get her master's degree

Academic Excellence award for Mass Media and Public Relations. Since graduating, Hailey is now the Communications and Marketing Director for the Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce. Hailey is also involved in sports media in Valdosta and recently worked with Anthony Richardson, the 4th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, at a youth football training camp.

2020 in English with plans to teach at the USAFA after completion. Before returning to USAFA, she will work as an Intelligence Officer. Anna and Jared Montgomery met during their freshman year at the Air Force Academy, and they were married in June on St. Simons Island, Ga., where Anna’s parents, Bill and Stephanie Caldwell, married years ago. Jared also graduated in May with a B.S. in aeronautical engineering and a minor in Russian. He will begin pilot training at Laughlin AFB in Texas. Hailey Wilkinson (HS ’19, JC ’19) recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from Valdosta State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Mass Media and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations. During her college career, Hailey worked with the University’s Digital Media Services as an Assistant Videographer, Marketing Director for the Campus Activities Board, and served on the Student Government Association. She received the

Mattison Strom (HS'20) was recently named by the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences to the Clemson University President's List for the spring 2023 semester. The honor is reserved for students who exemplify academic excellence by achieving a grade point average of 4.0.

Colin Hall (JC '22) is Georgia College & State University’s first-ever Truman Scholar. Created as a living memorial to United States President Harry S. Truman, the Truman Scholarship is a highly competitive national award given to exceptional college juniors who demonstrate outstanding leadership potential, a commitment to public service and academic excellence. This year, Hall is the only student in Georgia to earn this prestigious honor recognizing his commitment to public service.
