The present research paper, first deals with the study of the concepts of canny and uncanny through the example of S. Michele in Borgo in Pisa. How do these two concepts of psychology appear in public space, always based on that particular building?
Afterwards it is studied how memory affects the design of a certain building or an entire city, such as Pisa. The aim of this thesis, in summary, is to explore the boundaries between canny and uncanny, their relationship to the concept of memory, individual and collective and whether they are distinct from one another.
Through well-known examples of conscious use of the uncanny, the conditions and operations that make a building seam uncanny, will be then studied, contrasting them later with the example of S. Michele, in which there was no such initial intention of the architects.
