The Concept Design Book for Ann Arbor Public Schools’ Dicken Elementary captures a deeply collaborative and values-driven design process aimed at aligning physical space with the district’s educational vision. Through a series of integrated workshops—VALUES, BOLD, and Curriculum/Space Alignment—educators, administrators, and design professionals worked together to define the future of teaching and learning in the district.
Grounded in the VALUES framework (Viewing Architecture through the Lens of User Experience and Sustainability), the process emphasized wellness, equity, environmental stewardship, and student-centered experiences. The BOLD workshop explored shifts toward modern, learner-centered pedagogy, while the Curriculum/Space Alignment session translated these educational priorities into flexible, future-ready learning environments.
